“Change Your Ways Or We Will Change You In 2027”, Kano Warns President Tinubu

Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa - the Kano state chairman of the NNPP and Bola Tinubu

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP,  has called on President Bola Tinubu to either amend his ways or risk electoral humiliation in 2027 .

This is even as it dismissed speculations suggesting the exit of its  National leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwanso from the Party.

At an interactive session with the media on Thursday, January 2, 2025, Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, the Kano State Chairman of the NNPP, noted that the President still has enough time to review some of his anti-people policies and avert a looming electoral catastrophe .

According to him, President Tinubu, so far, has embarked on many anti-people policies which are enough to earn him a total rejection by the people should he present himself for re-election at the next polls.

“The President has done many things wrong that offend the Nigerian people irrespective of ethnic, religious and political persuasions.

“The only thing that can save him is a holistic reversal of the anti-people polices which his administration has embarked upon from inception.

“We never had a President in the history of Nigeria that fired reeled out anti-people policies from the podium and thereafter roll out controversial policies that have knocked down the citizens to comatose one after the other” Dungurawa stated .

The NNPP chairman particularly ,singled out the recent disputed tax reforms bill ,together with the hasty removal of petroleum products subsidy as some of the policies that are completely insensitive to the interests and  wellbeing of the people ,.

” The tax reforms bill is one anti-people policy too many by Mr President . We are made to understand that going by the provisions of the tax reforms bill ,if I die today ,certain percent will be yanked off from my inheritance to Government coffers .

My sincere advise to Mr President is for him to either change and or we change him 2027″ Dungarawa noted

Further speaking, the NNPP chairman accused the All Progressive Congress APC led Federal Government of trying to foist on the country a one party state .

While insisting that the NNPP led administration in Kano has so far creditably acquitted itself ,Dungarawa however singled out the unrelenting quest by president to muzzle opposition parties as the greatest challenge facing the state Government.

He however advised the Federal Government to channel its energy towards improving the living condition of the people ,rather than fighting imaginary enemies

Dungarawa ,described as false ,misleading and totally mischievous insinuations that Kwankwaso ,will be leaving the party to join forces with the APC .

According to him, such rumours are mere propaganda being promoted by some mischievous elements to undermine the political interest of Kwankwaso .

Insecurity In Anambra: NFSS To The Rescue

Nigerian Forest Security Service NFSS

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

As conventional security outfits appear to be overwhelmed by the spate of violence and organized criminal activities ravaging most parts of Anambra State, the Nigerian Forest Security Service NFSS, has offered to assist in rescuing the State.

The NFSS said it is ready to work in concert with other security agencies and the Anambra State authorities in ridding the State’s forests of criminal elements and unknown gunmen.

The Source reports that over 90 per cent of the violent attacks, abductions and other security breaches in the State are masterminded by hoodlums who have made the State’s forest reserves their operational camps.

Anambra State in the last few months has virtually been held hostage by sundry criminal elements through uncountable violent attacks, kidnappings, wanton destructions and mindless orgy of killings.

But in a statement on Thursday, January 2, 2025, the Anambra State Commander of NFSS, Destiny Jonas, informed that the outfit is ready to take the battle to the criminals’ den by combing all the nooks and crannies of forests in the State.

According to him, NFSS has the capacity to smoke out kidnappers, hoodlums and other criminal elements from the forests where they are largely encamped

Referencing the recent orgy of security challenges such as the abduction of an Anglican Archbishop, the killing of a Catholic Clergy, the kidnapping of a member of the State House of Assembly, and the  gruesome killing of about eight mourners in Ihiala ,on December, 30, 2024, Jonas warned that Anambra is in dire need of intervention in the area of its security  architecture.

To this end, he emphasized the imperativeness of collaborative efforts among the State Government, conventional security outfits, and the NFSS in halting the unmitigated security challenges facing the State.

The NFSS Commander noted that the outfit is ready to avail its expertise in forest related operations with a view to flushing out suspected terrorists and hoodlums inhabiting the vast Anambra forest reserves.

“NFSS is ready to support Operation” Udo Ga Di Na Anambra and collaborate with other security agencies to secure the hinterlands” Jonas stated

While expressing deep concern over investors and other developmental partners shunning Anambra on account of the sorry state of security, the NFSS also underscored the need for Government’s recognition of its potentials in the onerous task of halting the ongoing security slides.

He called for synergy and dialogue with the State authorities to upscale efforts at reclaiming the forests from criminal elements.

Pending Government’s nod, Commander Jonas informed that NFSS has  already produced a framework detailing identified flashpoints across bushes and forests in the state ,as well as the conducts of clearance operations.

He  further stated that NFSS is set to launch its operations in Anambra in 2025once it is green-lighted by the authorities.

A Nation at War: Five Days in Israel

Perhaps three will be the lucky number. After at least two previous failed attempts, a peace deal between Israel and Hamas might be reached by January 20 or in the early days of Donald Trump’s second term. Or…

It’s a matter of perhaps, with a big P. Optimism is a rare commodity in a region with the longest-running conflict and the largest river of bad blood. Yet, after over 450 days of war with its predations, traumas and devastations, a bit of optimism is not a bad thing.

In that spirit, I accepted the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs invitation for a five-day official visit between December 15 and 19.

To visit or not?

One week before my trip, Bashar al-Assad fell and fled to Russia. The inheritor of a legacy of hostility toward Israel, his father, Hafez, once demanded the cession of the Golan Heights as a precondition for peace between Israel and Syria. Bashar’s fall ended over 50 years of the Assad dynasty, leaving in its place an uncertain and dangerous void.

With a ceasefire holding by a thread, this was an inauspicious time to visit anywhere in the area, let alone the country at the heart of the renewed conflict.

Yet, after passing up the invitation in January 2023, I decided to go on my first trip to Israel. As our plane, Flight ET 404, descended from Addis Ababa, flying low over the Mediterranean, which bounds Ben Gurion Airport, Tel Aviv, at past seven in the morning, I couldn’t help imagining the worst.

With Hamas launching over 19,000 rockets – mainly unguarded missiles – against Israel since October 7, not a few of them targeting Tel Aviv, Israeli airspace has become something of an aviator’s nightmare. As Flight ET 404, carrying seven African journalists from Nigeria, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Zambia, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana, among other passengers, approached Ben Gurion one hour behind schedule, I thought, what if a stray rocket hit us?

Never say never

It may sound like the product of an overwrought mind contaminated by familiarity with bad news. But after Hamas killed more than 1,139 people, including women and children, on October 7 and took 364 hostages, many of the victims at a peace party in Nova, southern Israel, overthinking the worst appears to be the standard way of life.

The pictures of the victims at the Nova party with their stories written on small boards and hoisted on wooden poles above beds of candles and flowers at the memorial site are also engraved in the hearts of families up and down the country, still struggling to come to terms with what happened on that day.

At the Bring Them Back Home Now office, an NGO in Tel Aviv, 82-year-old Itzik Horn, a survivor of two terrorist attacks in his original home in Argentina, shared the story of how his two sons, Yair, 46 and Eitan, 38, were kidnapped from the Nir Oz Kibbutz not far from Nova, the epicentre of Hamas crime scene on October 7. Eitan had gone to visit his brother Yair for the weekend when Hamas struck.

A father can’t forget

After the attack, Horn did not hear from his children again for weeks until a Hamas video surfaced showing they had been taken hostage.

“I’ve not heard any news about them again since November (2023),” Horn said, hunched over a chair on the verge of a forlorn hope from retelling this story a million times. “A father can’t just forget his children or give up on them, can he? I want to know what is happening to them. Are they gagged, dead or alive? I want to know. I want them back home, now.”

I still have, as a keepsake, the felt pen of one of Ela Ben-Zvi’s three children, scattered among the shards of glass and other household items, strewn on the floor of her vandalised, bullet-ridden home in Kibbutz Be’eri, one of the oldest kibbutz in Israel impacted by the attack.

Seven hours in the bunker

Ela, her husband, Eyal, three children, and a dog had lived in Be’eri, separated by a wire mesh, only five kilometres from Gaza. On the morning of October 7, when the bomb alarm went off at 6:20 a.m., she had nine seconds to get to the shelter with her children, aged 8, 5, and 3, and her dog. It was not an unfamiliar drill.

Except this one was longer and more harrowing for the retired soldier and her husband, let alone for the children and the dog, who were consigned for seven hours to a relentless siege in a bunker hardly suitable for more than two.

The IDF later rescued Ela and her family, but her dog died afterwards. Her neighbour, a 78-year-old woman living alone, was not so lucky. The Hamas attackers murdered her in her bed, one of the reported 102 people killed in Be’eri on that day.

Some sheikhs were here

Upcountry, in the Ramim Ridge of the Naftali Mountains in Upper Galilee, the story of Orna Weinberg from four generations in the Manara Kibbutz, a community described as Israel’s northern shield, exemplified the paradox of the strife between Israel and Lebanon, its northern neighbour.

“When this Kibbutz was founded 81 years ago (before the State of Israel), we didn’t have water,” Weinberg said as we stood overlooking a UN truck on the other side of the border. “We used to fetch water from Lebanon, bringing them up here on mules and barrows. When the first water pipes were installed, the sheikhs of these Lebanese villages came to celebrate with us!”

As we inspected the ruins from the multiple rocket and mortar attacks launched by Hezbollah, the silence only broken by Weinberg’s narration and the sounds of our shoes crunching the remnant of mangled metals, twisted glasses, and other household utensils littering the floor inside one of the bombed buildings in Kibbutz Manara, Weinberg’s story sounded like a tale from another world.

“Nowhere to go!”

What is left today of that once thriving community of 260 people where Rachel Rabin Yaakov, sister of former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, also lived, is a shadow of itself. With at least five older adults dead after the forced evacuations that followed the Hezbollah attacks that affected 70 percent of the community, Manara is a ghost town sustained by the stubborn spirit of a few like Weinberg, who have stayed back to rebuild.

“We have nowhere to go. I have nowhere to go,” Weinberg said. “This is the only place I know. It’s the shield of the North, without which Israel will not exist. If Hezbollah prevails, if Iran prevails, not only Israel, but the whole world is in trouble!”

About land?

While pro-Palestinian sentiments frame the question as essentially one of decades of oppression and injustice arising from a land grab, several Israeli officials I met on this trip dismissed such sentiments, citing two instances. One, in 1979, Israel ceded the Sinai Peninsula, twice the size of Israel, to Egypt as a peace offering.

Two, in 1993, even after Yitzhak Rabin signed the Oslo Accords with Arafat under a deal supervised by US President Bill Clinton to prevent the creation of new settlements and pave the way for a two-state solution, top PLO officials, including Arafat, later described the Accord as a strategic manoeuvre before “the great Jihad.”

Israel, they insist, is a victim of duplicitous diplomacy, mainly by Arab countries, that condemn its acts of self-defence in the daytime and, at night, urge it not to spare Shiite extremism, promoted by Iran, the most significant source of regional instability.

Against the odds

It’s a measure of Israel’s resilience that, despite the war and disagreements even within Israel about how best to handle the war and the return of the remaining 100 hostages, despite a Hamas information machinery that brooks neither dissent nor filters, Israel is still standing.

Yet, its long-term security is intrinsically linked to its neighbours, with whom they have been joined by history and geography and must find and negotiate a common ground, one that might reenact Weinberg’s legend of the sheikhs from Lebanon.

“A review of CCTV camera recordings showed two of them standing beside the gate of Mr Ajani’s residence, one of them sipping water from a plastic bottle, while the two others strolled into the compound.

“On noticing the young men from one of the two sitting rooms on the ground floor of the one-storey duplex building, the retired Federal Officer reportedly rose to meet them at the main door.

AI Academy in Abuja

By Ayodele Oni

To further boost digital economy, the Federal Government on Thursday   unveiled a free Artificial Intelligence (AI) Academy with the aim of positioning Nigeria as a leader in the global digital economy.

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, who inaugurated the AI Academy in Abuja, said the programme is set up in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat and Intel Corporation.

While emphasising that the online programme is free, the minister called on all Nigerians particularly students, youths and civil servants to avail themselves of the opportunity to be part of a movement that would redefine the future of the nation.

According to the Minister, registration for the free AI Academy will open next week Thursday and it is expected to close by January 30.

“The AI Academy is not just a training platform but a transformative opportunity for Nigerians–students, youths and civil servants–to acquire critical skills in AI.

“In a world where AI is reshaping industries, solving complex problems and creating new economic frontiers, it is imperative that Nigeria not only keeps pace, but leads the charge.”

The Minister explained that the programme would provide participants with access to self-paced courses on AI fundamentals, ethics, tools and real-world applications.

He added that beyond learning the AI Technology, it offers opportunities to compete for AI ambassadorial roles and internships with Intel Corporation, as well as ensuring hands-on global experience.

Nnaji said that the role of AI in nation-building could not be over emphasised as AI was no longer a distant concept.

He described it as a transformative tool that could drive progress in agriculture, healthcare, education, security and many other sectors.

“By equipping Nigerians with these skills, we are not just preparing individuals for jobs but creating a pipeline of innovators, problem-solvers and leaders who will shape Nigeria’s technological and economic destiny.

“Most importantly, AI will go a long way to help us develop innovative solutions for the unique challenges we face as a nation.

“Since the beginning of the President Bola Tinubu’s administration, there has been a lot of focus on AI spearheaded by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.”

The Minister, stressed that all the efforts are geared towards positioning Nigeria as AI leader in Africa and ensuring that the country does not miss the benefits of the global AI revolution.

To that effect, the Communications Ministry recently released the country’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy document, which is currently being reviewed by MDAs. It will be adopted as a national policy to guide all government efforts in Al.

State Of The Nation: Corruption Is ‘Corrosive’ Under Tinubu, President Must Draw ‘A Line’- Ex-Presidential Adviser

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President

Laolu Akande, a former presidential aide says corruption in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has become very corrosive. The president has to draw ‘a line’ now, instead of showing ‘lackadaisical attitude to the problem, he asserted.

Akande, the former spokesman for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo made the remark on Thursday on Channels Television programme Morning Show.

According to him, official graft has continued to eat deep into the  fabrics of the Nigerian society while the administration is looking the other way.

He said corruption must be tacked head-on if the country was to make any progress.

He spoke amidst reports that President Tinubu was chosen among world’s most corrupt leaders by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.

The Nigerian leader claimed the third position after a poll called for citizens worldwide to nominate individuals worthy of taking the spotlight for their roles in advancing criminal activities while aggravating poverty, Peoples Gazette reported.

According to the newspaper, the organisers of the infamous award which coordinates a network of investigative journalists and activists around the world, said the Nigerian leader came third behind Kenya President, William Ruto and former Indonesian President Joko Widodo  after an election was conducted.

While Kenyan president William Ruto scored the most votes, Mr Tinubu was listed as number three, following former Indonesian president Joko Widodo.

Organisers nonetheless awarded the main Person of the Year label to Bashar al-Assad, the recently ousted leader of Syria, who fled to Russia earlier this month after spending decades plundering the Middle-Eastern country.

“The judges acknowledge the importance of public interest and outrage at corruption,” the newspaper quoted the organisers to have said.

Regional Commission Budget: Obi Condemns Exclusion Of North Central

0
Peter Obi

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi has berated the federal Government for excluding the North Central Region in the 2025 fiscal budgetary allocations to the Regional Commissions.

Writing in his X handle on Wednesday, Obi said such omission is condemnable because of the far-reaching implications.

“The exclusion of the North Central Regional Commission from the budgetary allocations provided to other Regional Commissions in the 2025 proposed budget is deeply troubling and must be urgently reversed.

“Such an anomaly does not make for even development and peace that is needed for progress in the country.

“A total of N2.493 trillion has been allocated to five regional development commissions, with the North Central Regional Commission glaringly omitted.

“The North Central region is one that urgently requires special attention due to the severe challenges it faces today. Relentless terror attacks and banditry in Plateau, Benue, Kogi, and Niger States have caused immense suffering, resulting in significant loss of lives and forcing countless families into internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. “These persistent tragedies have made the North Central one of the most affected and vulnerable regions in Nigeria.

“Known as the agricultural backbone of the nation, the North Central region deserves robust support to enhance security, stability, and development for the benefit of the entire country.

“I, therefore, call on the government and National Assembly to urgently review and rectify this decision that will impact negatively on the region and area most needed for the development of the country

“Together, we must work toward a more inclusive and equitable Nigeria. A New Nigeria is not just a dream—it is POssible.”

LP Declares 2025 Year of ‘Unveiling’ As Rumoured Exit Of Peter Obi Intensifies

0
Peter Obi and Julius Abure

The Labour Party, LP, has declared 2025 as the year of ‘unveiling’.

The LP Director General of the Directorate of Mobilization and Integration, Marcel Ngogbehei, made the declaration without elaborating.

Ngogbehie, in a new year message, warned that the party would achieve nothing if members are divided, adding that the quest to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, might just be a mirage if disunity persists in the party.

He warned the Obedient Movement, a group in the party led by its 2023 Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi to desist from stoking disunity in the party, saying the party needs cohesion more than ever to achieve its aim of achieving better a Nigeria.

His remark is however coming on the heels of suggestions that the party’s presidential candidate in last year election is planning to leave the party ahead the 2027 election in the country.

Obi had last year created the Obedient Movement, in what analysts said was a prelude to moving out of his party with his massive supporters. The former Governor of Anambra state has yet to make his reported decision to abandon his party, public.

Analysts insist that Obi has no option than to achieve his ambition to rule the country, outside the party due to the protracted crisis of confidence between him and LP Chairman, Julius Abure.

Recall that Abure had last year, following his affirmation by the Supreme Court as the Chairman of the party disclosed that the LP presidential ticket was not longer exclusive for Obi.

Ngogbehie said, “This year, 2025, is the Year of Unveiling —a pivotal time to transform hope into action and dreams into reality. It is a time to consolidate our efforts, strengthen our ranks, and intensify our collective push toward the Nigeria we all desire.

“However, I must address a crucial matter: Those who sow seeds of discord within the Obidient movement must pause and have a rethink. Divisions weaken our resolve, dilute our strength, and play into the hands of those who have no interest in the people’s welfare.

“Only a consolidated, highly integrated, and united opposition can dislodge the APC from power in 2027.

“We need every voice, every heart, and every thumbprint to achieve this. To the faithful across all states and beyond, I urge you all to keep the fire of hope burning, to remain steadfast in our shared purpose, and to inspire others with the same passion and vision.

In 2025, God’ll crush Rivers’ enemies — Fubara

“Let us continue to work together, guided by the principles of integrity, equity, and justice, as we build momentum for the milestones ahead. The challenges are immense, but our determination is stronger.

“Let this year be a rallying point for deeper integration, collaboration, and preparation for the journey ahead. Together, we are unstoppable. Together, we will build the Nigeria of our dreams,” he said.
