No Respite For Emirs Sanusi, Bayero, As Appeal Court Orders Retrial

The Appeal Court sitting in Abuja, on Friday,  January 10, 2025, ordered the Kano State Chief Judge to put machineries in motion for the retrial of one of  the cases involving Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and the Kano State Government.

The Source reports that the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, had, on Thursday ,May 23, 2024, deposed the 15th Emir of Kano Aminu Bayero, along side four others of Rano, Karaye ,Gaya and Bichi.

The action was predicated on the hurriedly passed  Kano State Emirate Council laws of 2024 ,by the State Lawmakers.

The unceremonious and controversial deposition paved way for the return of Emir Muhammad Sanusi, who was deposed in 2020, by the immediate past Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

However, the deposition of Emir Bayero and  four others was carried out in utter disregard of a restraining court order.

The development has since triggered a plethora of court actions on both sides, resulting in the ancient Emirate currently having two parallel Emirs– Bayero and Sanusi.

While the Kano State Government- i backed  Emir Sanusi has been channeling their court cases to the Kano state High Court, Emir Bayero and his loyalists have been seeking succor at the Federal High Court Kano.

In one of the applications filed by the Kano State  Government, the  State High Court on July 15, 2024, ordered Bayero to stop parading himself as  the Emir of Kano.

It also directed Emir Bayero to vacate the Nassarawa mini Palace where he has been residing since the commencement of the dispute over the ancient throne.

The Source reports that following the heated tussle for the Emirate seat, Emir Sanusi, with the aid of the State authorities has been holding court at the City palace ,while his rival ,Bayero, is holed up at the Nasarrawa mini palace .

However, dissatisfied with the ruling of the Kano State High  Court, Emir Bayero had sought a remedy at the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

In his notice of appeal, Emir Bayero had, among other things, contended that he was not given a fair trial by the trial Court.

He informed that he was neither served a notice of hearing, nor afforded the opportunity to present his own side of the case ,before the judgment against him was entered

Consequently, he prayed the Court to set aside the verdict as delivered by Hon Justice Amina of the  Kano state High Court.

Delivering its judgment, the three-member panel of the Appeal Court led by Hon Justice Mohammed Mustapha, declared null and void, the verdict delivered by the trial Court, noting that it was a travesty of justice

The Appallet Court sustained the earlier argument by the applicant ( Bayero) to the effect that he was not given a fair hearing at the lower Court.

The Court of Appeal  held that Emir Bayero, based on the evidence before it, was not accorded the chance  to defend himself even after his Counsel had withdrawn from the case in protest.

It, specifically, accused the trial court of not being fair to the applicant, insisting that all courts of law are required to provide equal opportunities to all parties to defend themselves.

The Appeal Court panel noted that there was a glaring miscarriage of justice against the applicant.

Based on the foregoing, the Court, therefore, ordered the Kano State Chief Judge to reassign the matter to another Judge for a retrial .

Accordingly, the Court held that there was no longer any need to delve into other issues  raised by the applicant since it has been established that he was not given a fair hearing in the first place .

Uzodimma To Hoodlums: “Stop Killings, Come Out From Bush, Lay Down Arms, I Will Help You In New Life”

Hope Uzodimma - Imo State Governor
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State.:

“Those who gruesomely killed Imo APC woman leader, Okonkwo, dumped her body in the bush, still at work, says the Governor”

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma has appealed to the hoodlums still hiding in the bush to perpetuate insecurity in parts of the State to come out, lay down their arms and join the society in contributing positively to the good of all.

He also promised that government will be willing to assist them in any kind of business  they choose to go into in order to be useful to themselves and the society.

The Governor spoke at the funeral of Late Hon. (Mrs.) Jenny Rachael Okonkwo, a former APC woman leader for Orlu zone who was gruesomely murdered in 2022 by suspected hoodlums and her corpse dumped in the bush.

Addressing the audience at her country home in Ogberuru in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State on Thursday,  the Governor bemoaned the condition under which the woman leader was assassinated, insisting that the Party and the State lost a gem in her.

Governor Uzodimma prayed for the repose of her soul and the souls of the four other women assassinated alongside with her and proceeded to approve the sum of N10 million for each of the deceased families. He also promised that the Government will be willing to employ any of their children who is employable, or in the alternative train them if they are willing to learn a trade or skill.

The Governor reminded all that Mrs.  Okonkwo was untimely and gruesomely assassinated, not because of any offence she committed, but because she was an APC member who did her job effectively as a woman leader and mobilizer.

“She was one of the best, one of the best organizers and mobilizers, not only in Orlu Local Government but in Imo State in general. A very committed Party woman, who worked, suffered, served the Party and the government, and because of her commitment,  political opponents assassinated her.

“When Rachael was assassinated alongside four others, the senseless political violence and gruesome killings in the area was not known. Those who are behind the political killings in Orlu zone are still at work, but very soon the wrath of God will catch up with them.

“Strangers were used to kill and assassinate their brothers and sisters in Orlu. However, today, with the help of God Orlu people are beginning to see that those behind the killings in Orlu and other areas of the State do not mean well for the State.”

He called on all affected by the death of late Mes. Okonkwo (Iron Lady) to take heart and remain committed to the Party and the State.

“it is a thing of conscience. What one sows is what one will reap. If you shed blood God will judge you, if you are innocent God will judge you, if you are killing for political power God will judge you; at the end of the day you will answer to God.”

Governor Uzodimma condoled with members of APC in the zone and in the State in general, especially members of Camp Hope, and acknowledged that they all “worked and suffered to bring back the peace we are witnessing in Imo State today.”

He noted that though the enemies did their worse, but they have not been able to stop the river from flowing.

He urged all members of APC to remain firm, committed and resilient, saying that as the leader of the Party in the State he “knows those who are very sincere, committed and those who believe in the programmes and policies of the State and they will never regret their sojourn in the Party.

Earlier, Governor Uzodimma had paid a condolence visit to the family of late Mrs. Okonkwo where he met the widower and their son.

Introducing the Governor to the gathering, the member representing Orlu/Orsu/Oru East Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Canice-Moore Nwachukwu thanked the Governor for coming, describing it as a show of solidarity and support, not only to CampHope but the entire APC in Orlu zone and Imo State in general.

He said the coming together to bid farewell to late Mrs. Okonkwo was symbolic and a thing to appreciate the leadership quality of the Governor.

In his welcome remarks, the Executive Chairman of Orlu zone, Hon. Chris Mbarie thanked the Governor for coming to encourage and strengthen them in their continued support for the APC in the State, and said the CampHope is stronger everyday despite the challenges and acrimonies of the opponents against them.

He equally prayed for the repose of the soul of late Rachael and the other four persons who were assassinated alongside her.

The requiem mass was held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Ogberuru.

On  the Governor’s entourage were the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru and her husband, Chukwuma, former Governor of Imo State, Chief (Dr) Ikedi Ohakim, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Imo State, Barr. Sir Nnamdi Anyaehie, former Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly and current Managing Director of Anambra Imo River Basin Development Authority, Rt. Hon. Akwa Ibom: Gov Eno Dissolves Inherited State Executive Council, Says Members Performed Well

Governor Umo Eno - Akwa Ibom State

By Ayodele Oni

Despite lending credence to their performance, Akwa Ibom state Governor, Umo Eno has dissolved the State Executive Council.

At a valedictory council session on Friday,  Governor Eno lauded the contributions of the outgoing cabinet members, acknowledging their committed roles in the success of his administration’s Arise Agenda.

The governor stated that “For me, if you were to be changed based on non-performance, I think none of the commissioners would go. All of you have delivered, and that’s why the Arise Agenda has succeeded. But we must come to the end of a season, start another season, and keep moving.”

Governor Eno inherited most members of his cabinet from his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, retaining them to ensure continuity and reward their past efforts.

However, he had previously hinted of plans to restructure the cabinet to inject fresh ideas into governance.

During the state’s 37th anniversary celebration in September 2023, Governor Eno announced his intention to dissolve the council and bring in new professionals to steer the administration forward.

While the majority of the cabinet members were retained from the previous administration, the Ministry of Internal Security was the only newly created portfolio under Governor Eno, led by General Koko Essien (rtd).

Two key vacancies in the Ministries of Environment and of Special Duties have remained vacant since the exit of Unoh Etim Unoh and Dr. Bassey Okon, who resigned to contest the last Local Government election.

Kingmakers Challenge Gov. Makinde Over Choice Of Owoade As Alaafin Of Oyo

0
Seyi Makinde

By Ayodele Oni

Five Oyo State Kingmakers, traditionally known as Oyomesi, have disagreed with Governor Seyi Makinde, over the choice and endorsement of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo

Their protest and disagreement just before the appointment of  Owoade to the revered stool came in form of a letter addressed to the Governor by the Kingmakers.

The letter to the Governor follows what the Kingmakers saw as a  suorise new selection process of a new Alaafin after they had concluded the process and agreed on Prince Lukman Gbadegesin as the Alaafin-elect.

The letter signed on behalf of the Kingmakers – Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Akinade, the Lagunna of Oyo, High Chief Wakeel Akindele, the Akinniku of Oyo, High Chief Hamzat Yusuf, a Warrant Chief who stood in for Asipa of Oyo, Chief Wahab Oyetunji, and a Warrant Chief who stood in for Alapinni of Oyo, Chief  Gbadebo Mufutau – Adekunle Sobaloju, SAN, said the Governor’s action in starting a new process, is a direct disregard of a pending Court case regarding the selection process.

The letter which was made public on Thursday, January  9, 2025,  before the State Government’s announcement of Prince Abimbola Owoade as Alaafin-elect on Friday, January 10, 2024, reads:

“We have just been reliably informed by our clients that you have just through the Oyo State Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs and Chairmen of Atiba and Oyo East Local Government appointed (i) Chief Odurinde Olusegun (Alajagba of Ajagba) (ii) Chief Ganiyu Ajiboye (Alago-Oja of Ago Oja) as warrant kingmakers to join High Chief Asimiyu Atanda (Agbaakin of Oyo) and High Chief Lamidi Oyewale (Samu of Oyo) to kickstart the process of selecting another candidate to fill the vacant stool of Alafin of Oyo.

“The two local government chairmen and the said warrant chiefs and High Chief Asimiyu Atanda (Agbaakin of Oyo) and High Chief Lamidi Oyewale (Samu of Oyo) who are not in support of the decision of the majority of the kingmakers that selected Prince Lukman Adelodun Gbadegesin as the Alafin-elect were summoned today, 9th January 2025 to the office of the Oyo State Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs where they were ordered to commence a fresh process to fill the vacant stool of Alafin of Oyo.”

The SAN described the Makinde’s action as illegal and disrespectful to the judiciary, and pointed out that the case was still in   court.

Disregarding the  authorities of the Court, he noted, undermines governance and violates the constitution.

He equated the Governor’s action to a previous incident where Makinde disregarded court proceedings and dissolved democratically elected local government chairmen.

“Proceeding to commence a fresh process for the filling of the vacant stool of Alafin of Oyo would be subjudice and tantamount to lawlessness and disregard of the superior courts of record, an act which Your Excellency ought to distance yourself from.

“We, therefore, once more request and urge Your Excellency to suspend any plan to kick start fresh process for the filling of the vacant stool of Alafin of Oyo during the pendency of a motion for injunction, pending appeal in obedience to law and integrity of our

Since the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, 82,  on April 22, 2022,  81 after a 52-year reign, crisis has been the lot of every move to fill the vacant stool.

Prince Abimbola Owoade, the Governor’s choice is in his 40’s, and based in Canada.

After Okiro’s Withdrawal, Uche Okwukwu Is Elected Ohanaeze Ndigbo President-General

Mike Okiro and Uche Okwukwu

By Charles Igbo

In a surprise outcome,  Uche Okwukwu, Lawyer, Politician and a former Secretary-General of the  apex Igbo socio- cultural Organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has been pronounced the new President-General.

If his election is accepted without any acrimony, controversy or legal issues, he would become the substantive President General of Ohanaeze following the passing of business mogul  philanthropist and politician, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

On Iwuanyanwu’s passing, an interim President General, Chief Ozichukwu Chukwu, was announced pending an election.

The days leading to the election were dogged by controversies and legal actions. The candidacy of Okwukwu had been strongly criticised by not a few people who identified him as one of those who, allegedly, factionalised Ohanaeze and refused to recognise the Iwuanyanwu-led body as the authentic Igbo apex body.

It also follows a strong battle against the candidacy  of a retired Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro. Okiro faced a stiff challenge over his real State of Origin – Rivers (whose turn it is to produce the PG of Ohanaeze) or Imo. Not a few people insisted that Okiro, from Egbema, a border town torn between Imo and Rivers is from the Imo side of the Community. They accused him of, allegedly, usurping Rivers slot to enlist in the Police, an institution where he ended up as the IGP.

Okiro finally stepped down from the race 24 hours to Okwukwu’s election in compliance with a Federal High Court order.

Okiro, in a statement, however said he disagreed with the Court order.

He said:

“My dear brothers and sisters, I, Sir Mike Okiro CFR, President General Candidate for Ohanaeze Ndigbo Election slated for 10th January, 2025 address you today with unwavering resolve.

“I have been made aware of the Enugu State High Court’s interim order, which regrettably restrains me from contesting the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Presidency General Election tomorrow.

“The court order, based on alleged non-indigene status, contradicts verifiable facts. It is unfortunate that the court did not invite me or heard from me before giving that obnoxious order which I got from the media.

“The facts are (a) That I hail from Egbema in Rivers State as shown by my National Population Commission Attestation of Birth. (b) My Traditional Ruler, the Nzeobi of Egbema, has also confirmed my indigene status of Rivers State. (c) I have written many books where my indigeneship of Rivers State is shown in the author’s column. A good example is my best seller, titled: “Nigeria:

“The Restructuring ‘Controversy”. (d) Page 6 of my biography written by Mr. Dozie Okebalama also shows my indigeneship of Rivers. (e) I have attended many Imeobi meetings where I represented Rivers State in the attendance list compiled by the Secretary-General. (f) As a student in the University of Ibadan, I was a member of the Rivers State Students’ Association, where I was elected as Treasurer, and another Great UIte, now Bistinguished Senator Andrew Uchendu was elected as Secretary. (g) I was representing Rivers State during the meetings of the South-South People’s Assembly under our respected leader, Chief Edwin Clark, where Prof. Pat. Utomi, another Great Nigerian, represented Delta State. My records and credentials speak for themselves.

“As an Igbo man and elder statesman of Rivers State Extraction which said position has been zoned to by the electoral committee, I believe in the rule of law and shall respect the court’s order.

“My Obedience to court orders, no matter how unfavorable, demonstrates our commitment to democracy. I believe in the principles of rule of law as the rule of law ensures our collective progress.

“The rule of law safeguards our society; its principles must be upheld, our democratic values are non-negotiable, together we will emerge stronger. Our stance for justice, due process and rule of law shall vindicate us.

“I will not participate in any election pending the final determination of the matter pending before Hon Justice N.R Oji of Enugu State High Court which court gave the restraining order.

“Although I’ve not been formally served with the suit/processes or order, my commitment to law and order remains unwavering, despite the fact that the reliefs granted in the order against me appears to undermine my fundamental right guaranteed in Chapter IV of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“My distinguished career as Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police underscores my dedication to justice and what is noble.

“I have instructed the Chambers of Eze Okafor & Co, my lawyers to pursue the case to its logical conclusion to ensure that the purveyors of hate and lawlessness are brought to book in line with our enabling laws.

“As provided by our constitution, I demand to be heard, and I am sure that the court will ensure that the twin pillars of natural justice will be observed to the later in handling the case. We have not lost hope in our judicial system.

“I urge my immediate community Egbema, the entire Igbo speaking people of Rivers state who are solidly behind me and all my supporters across Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, and Delta to stand by the rule of law throughout the period of this contest.

“Our resolve strengthens Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s unity and progress. Together, we’ll navigate this challenge.

“My Governor, His Excellency, Siminialayi Fubara GSSRS unwavering support is most highly appreciated and same cannot be taken for granted. Your Excellency’s leadership indeed inspires me.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo embodies Igbo unity, progress, and peaceful coexistence. Our organization promotes harmony among Igbos worldwide. Let’s prioritize peace and unity.

“I reaffirm my commitment to Ohanaeze Ndigbo Ideals; unity, progress and peace in Igbo land.

“Justice shall prevail; Igbo unity and progress remain our guiding principles.

“I assure all of you that we shall overcome this minor setback as our democratic values are non-negotiable.” Before Okiro’s withdrawal and Okwukwu’s election, another election had been held on January 5, 2025, and produced Chief Jackson Omenazu as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. This means that, for now, both Dr Omenazu and Barrister Okwukwu are laying claim to the Ohanaeze top job.

The coming days would confirm who is the authentic  leader of the body. The opinion is that it will depend on who the Governors of Igbo speaking areas, which include Rivers and Delta would back.

Whoever, between Okwukwu and Omenazu finally emerges the authentic leader would have made history. For, it will be the first time an Ikwerre man from Rivers State would occupy the revered office of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. It would also solidify the relationship between the Ikwerres of Rivers State and their brothers and sisters of the South East Zone.

The Nigerian Government has started to receive proceeds from some of the forfeited assets which belong to the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison- Madueke as the United States of America, (USA), repatriated the sum of $52. 88 million.

Madueke served as a Minister under former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard M. Mills, Jr, led a delegation that executed the Assets Return Agreement at the Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters in Abuja, on Friday.

Signing the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, disclosed that the $52.88m arose from the forfeiture of Galactica assets, linked to the ex-Minister and her associates.

The AGF maintained that the development was not only a testament to the unwavering commitment of both nations to fight corruption, but also signified the commitment of the USA to facilitate restitution and support integrity and accountability in governance.

“Measures have also been put in place to ensure that the repatriated funds are not only disbursed, but also utilized transparently and accountably by the World Bank and IIJ, with periodic reports to be forwarded to Nigeria and the US on the implementation of the projects.

“This robust framework will guarantee that the funds are effectively used for the full benefit of the Nigerian people in line with UNCAC and the Global Forum on Asset Recovery (GFAR) principles.”

OPINION: What You Might Expect in 2025

Azu Ishiekwene
Mr Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

“Arsenal fans are currently over the moon, testosterone pumping – and why not? The story will not change in 2024… the odds are not in Arsenal’s favour… My forecast is that despite setting his ducks in a row, (Godwin) Obaseki’s candidate would lose in September. His biggest undoing would be the large army of political enemies he has created in the last eight years – some inevitably from the reforms he introduced, but others, and in a far larger number, avoidably from his mean-spirited, opportunistic politics.”

This is the fifth in my series of annual forecasts. For a part-time Nostradamus, my record has been above average. The forecasts usually come earlier, in the last week of December. Yet, the potency of this edition is not diminished by the delay.

Imade a particularly catastrophic forecast for last year, which has left a puree of tomatoes on my face and those of a significant segment of the liberal press in the US, led by CNN: that President Joe Biden would defeat Donald Trump. That didn’t happen—not because Biden didn’t beat Trump, but because Biden was not in the race.

There were a few other misses, but on the whole, whether it was about Arsenal, the value of the exchange rate by year-end, or when Dangote and the public refineries would start production, I was bang on the money.

A word for ministers

Let me start with some unsolicited advice for politicians, especially President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ministers. Their biggest mistake this year would be to take the President’s statement during the December media chat that he won’t replace them at face value.

He said he wouldn’t replace them, not that he would keep them at any cost. I forecast that by May 29 or earlier, the president will replace ministers, especially those who have since outlived their IOU value. Aspressure mounts ahead of the pre-election year, no fewer than five of them willbe replaced or reassignedby the end of2025.

Fighting Tinubu

It’s 2025, but it feels like 2027.It has been this way since the end of last year. Leading politicians from the North, notably former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, spent much of 2024 regretting that the region supported Tinubu and swooning over how to stop his reelection. The schemes will reach a fever pitch this year as the government presses ahead with the Tax Reform Bills, which are perceived as anti-North.

The tax bills won’t be the only thing over which Northern politicians would raise a battle cry, even though it’s unlikely that they will stop the passage of a watered-down version.

When the government’s deadline against keeping dollars outside the banking system expires in July, those saving the greenback for the next election will cry foul and demand an extension, if not an outright rejection of the policy. They will arguethat 1) the government has no right to tell them what to do with their money and 2) it targets Northerners, who are dominant operators in Bureaus de Change.

In the same way, the census, as planned, is unlikely to be held this year. Some states, especially those in the opposition, would declare it an ingenious attempt at gerrymandering ahead of 2027. If the federal government goes ahead, they might repeat what happened in Lagos in 2006, when Tinubu was governor: mount a legal challenge, failing which the states would conduct their separate “census” and declare their figures valid.

Opposition in disarray

Yet, this is the year of the ultimate scramble for presidential favours, especially among politicians who can’t afford to wait for another four years in the cold. They’ve been joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in trickles. As the shambles of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) becomes a ruinous heap and the Labour Party produces more heat than fire, more and more will flock to the APC.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will remain the PDP’s albatross despite his efforts to act as its best card. Those hoping for an opposition coalition to challenge the APC in 2027 will be disappointed. The likely arrowheads of such a coalition—Atiku, NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and political strategist-in-a-limbo Nasir El-Rufai—would be unable to find a common ground.

Ambition, ego, and a perennial distrust of one another will ruin these strange bedfellows. Whatever is left of their political remains will be buried by their heartbroken followers. The new exiting class of second-term governors, likely from the South West and the North East, with money, ambition and a desire for fresh conquests, particularly Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, will overplay their reach.

Twice lucky

Governor Charles Soludo will likely be returned for a second term in November despite snippers from his party, APGA, and outside.

Where’s the money?

On the national stage,I worry about the economy. My advice is to view government officials’ rose-tinted forecasts with caution. The coming onstream of the Dangote Refinery, especially, and the partial production from the Port Harcourt Refinery helped ease pressure on foreign exchange demand, mainly because crude was purchased in naira. It would be interesting to see how this naira-for-crude arrangement will hold, especially as Dangote Refinery expands its markets outside Nigeria.

Prices would likely be more stable, with marginal improvements in the macroeconomic outlook. However, with the relatively high debt level, more borrowing crowding out private sector credit, and 2,604 uncompleted projects inherited from previous governments, it will be hard to find cash.

Feeding the cash cow

Revenue will continue to be a problem for at least two reasons: First, the government’s main cash cow, crude oil earnings, is unlikely to reach the anticipated 2m bpd, and the benchmark oil price of $75 pb might prove overambitious.

Multiple sources told me that current production levels are around 1.4-1.5m bpd, discounting for condensate. However, unless the government radically restructures the NNPCL, the weak and heavily politicised structure will underperform.

Shell’s $5 billion investment in Bonga is good news but will not crystalise until 2028/29. There are no new investments in the country’s mineral mining leases that NNPCL incompetently manages to inspire confidence or significantly relieve the current budget cycle.

Second, the government’s effort to improve farm output and moderate food inflation—currently the most severe threat to social security—is still in its early stages. Food inflation will remain relatively high this year, likely around the five-year average of 35 percent. Retooling the value chain to deliver results beyond the current subsistence levels will require radical steps for at least another cycle to bear fruit.

Managing discontent

To stave off social discontent from hardship, governments at all levels must invest more in the weak and vulnerable, especially the growing army of urban youths who will drift more into cybercrimes in significant numbers this year. As for security, the final piece of the puzzlefor establishing the state police will likely be completed this year, leaving only the paperwork for its implementation.

Between Arsenal and Trump

Is this finally the year broken Red Hearts will mend, the Year of Arsenal? It would be easier for Trump to take Canada as the 51st State of the US than for Arsenal to win the Premier League in May. If the club is exactly where it was this time last year (40 points after 20 games), the odds are that it will end up where it did in 2024: nearly there. The crown in 2025 is Liverpool’s to lose.

Trump 2.0’s pledge to execute the most extensive mass deportation in US history, just like his dubious promise in his first term to build a wall at Mexico’s expense, will be mired in litigation, logistics, and obstacles by some states and other institutions. It will hardly take off. However, he would have much greater leeway with his protectionist trade policies, potentially sparking retaliation from major US trading partners.

The great thing about Trump is that he won despite evidence that he would be the most unguarded US president in recent history. Nothing he does will surprise.
