By Akinwale Kasali

Impeached Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker,  Mudashiru Obasa, insists he remains the Speaker. Why and how?

Obasa said  a fake Mace was used to install his Deputy,  Mojisola  Meranda, as New Speaker of LAHA.

Obasa spoke while addressing the Mandate Group supporters on his arrival to Lagos after his return from Atlanta,United States of America.

He described his impeachment as null and void, because, according to him, due process was not followed.

Obasa added that on the day of his impeachment, hundreds of Policemen were deployed to his hous to intimidate his family and loyalists.

He stressed: I remain the Speaker of the House.

Obasa also alleged that some policemen invaded his official residence on the same day and prevented members of his family and every other person in the house from coming out. “They locked in my wife and children”, he lamented.

Obasa described all the alleged actions as illegalities, vowing to challenge his removal in Court. He also vowed to go back to the House and resume as Speaker.

”The speakership is not Obasa’s title, it is like a General when you go to war, you may come out or you may not come back.

“So, I am not disturbed, perturbed, or worried about the purported removal.

“However, things must be done properly. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police led police officers to invade the State Assembly on the day of the removal, while over 200 policemen also invaded my private residence in Agege.

“They also blocked the gate to my official residence, while they prevented members of my family from going out of the house.

“I am not afraid of being removed. I have been a member of the House for almost 22 years and Speaker for almost 10 years. And I think I have contributed my quota.

“But why did they have to break the chamber and use a fake mace to carry out the removal? If they say they don’t want me again, it is fine. But let them follow due procedure.

“My status in the House is that I believe strongly that I remain the speaker of the Assembly until the right procedure to remove me is followed,” he said.

He debunked the allegation that he spent N16 billion to construct a gate at the Assembly complex, describing the allegation as ridiculous.

According to him, it is not possible to construct any gate with N16 billion.

Obasa also debunked the allegation that he bought 40 Hilux vans for N40 billion as Speaker.

The former Speaker said he had not done anything wrong to warrant his removal, adding he had lived up to expectations serving as a lawmaker for over two decades.

He, however, appreciated the First Lady,  Oluremi Tinubu for her support, and President Bola Tinubu, who he said would always be his father.

He further appreciated members of the Governance Advisory Council, GAC, and Gov. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for their love for the party and the State.

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has expressed delight with the emergence of the State University (EKSU) as the leading State University in Nigeria.

EKSU  secured the 12th position out of 270 universities in Nigeria both public and private, according to a comprehensive ranking list published by Times Higher Education rating for 2025.

Governor Oyebanji, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, congratulated the   university’s Chancellor, Dr Tunji Olowolafe, for his support and commitment towards the development of the University.

He, also, congratulated the Governing Council of the University led by Prof Akin Oyebode and the management led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Joseph Babatola Ayodele on the achievement, which he said resulted from the hard work of the staff and students.

The Governor noted that EKSU’s leading position among fellow state-owned universities in the country is a positive advertisement of the state’s education sector, and a justification for his  administration’s huge investment in education and human capital development.

The Governor said he is happy  that EKSU, with the latest feat, is justifying government’s investment in education, especially the significant increment in Government’s subvention to the University from N261 million to N410 million monthly, improved staff welfare package and infrastructure development, including the reconstruction of Ado – Iworoko  – Ifaki road, among others.

Oyebanji, who is EKSU’s  first alumnus to serve as Visitor to the university, promised to continue to ensure adequate government support for the university in areas of  teaching and research, as well as infrastructure upgrade.

The Governor enjoined the management of the university not to rest on its oars, but work harder not only to sustain the momentum as the best state university but also to emerge as the overall best university in Nigeria, a feat he said is  achievable with more commitment.

It is recalled that Governor Oyebanji, in a bid to solve the power supply issue in EKSU, had, last year,  directed that the university be connected to the state’s Independent Power Plant (IPP).

Introduction Of Sharia In Southwest Destabilization Plot – Pan Yoruba Groups

0
Sharia

By Ayodele Oni

Notable Pan Yoruba groups have spoken against the introduction of Sharia in Yoruba territories.

There has been report that Sharia has birthed in Oyo and Ekiti States but government has reacted describing the report as untrue.

In a joint statement released at the weekend the groups described plot to introduce Sharia in the South West as a “grand illusion.”

It described it as a “preconceived act to destroy the agelong cultural, economic and political unity in Yorubaland” adding that the promoters from outside Yorubaland are looking to ensure “full circle instability in Nigeria having succeeded in some parts of the North.”

The statement, tagged “Historic Position of Pan Yoruba groups on Sharia” said Islam has contributed immensely to Yoruba civilisation since the 14th century having built the first Mosque at Oyo Ile in 1550 and has made tremendous contributions to the economic, education and industrial development of Yorubaland.

The groups however said faith in Yoruba history has always been a personal affair and not a state matter.

“On behalf of millions of Yoruba people across the world, we, members and leaders of Pan Yoruba groups representing artisans, workers, students, community based groups, traders, professionals and Self-determination groups spread across Yoruba territories in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Itsekiri areas of Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Ondo, Kwara and Kogi States, we speak on Sharia, its implications on the over 2000 year old civilisation of Yoruba people.

“We do not come as Christians, Muslims, Animists, Artiest or Traditional worshipers but as Yoruba created same way by Almighty God the creator of the universe bounded together by humanity seeking perpetuation of peace, love and progress of Yorubaland.”

The statement was signed by several groups representing artisans, students, women, self determination and civil society groups in Lagos, Oyo, Ogun,Edo, Delta, Ekiti, Ondo, Kwara, Kogi and Osun states.

The groups said the current proposal, “by a tiny group of people, backed by largely non-Yoruba domestic and international collaborators pushing for the introduction of Sharia in Yorubaland is a dangerous dimension aimed at creating conflict and instability in Yorubaland.

“Yoruba Muslims are proud of the place of Islam in sustainable development in Yorubaland.

Islam has made significant contributions to the economic, social and spiritual development of Oodua territories.

“Through Islam, education, health and welfare have been promoted in Yorubaland. Islam came to Yorubaland in the 14th century during the reign of Mansa Musa (1312-1337). The first Mosque in Yorubaland was built at Oyo-Ile in 1550, followed by another Mosque in Iwo (1655), Iseyin, (1790), Lagos, (1774), Saki (1790) and Osogbo, (1889).

“We observe a conscious and tailor-made plot to destabilise Yorubaland through organised sponsorship of divisive, retrogressive and dangerous proposals that will end up causing confusion, disunity and raise the spectre of intra-Yoruba conflict to the delight of our eternal foes.

“We, the true representatives of Yoruba people hereby strongly oppose the introduction of Sharia in any part of Oduduwaland of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Delta, Kogi, Edo, Kwara and Ondo States. Sharia is not feasible and can never be acceptable to a multi-religious, multi-faith people like the Yoruba;

“Sharia is only applicable in societies where Islam is the State religion or majority of the people profess Islam.”

The groups said though proponents of Sharia claim the law is for only Muslims, but the contradictions are self evident.

“The Yoruba are bound by blood, history, common fear and shared aspirations, not by religion; How can any one in his right senses conceive Sharia law in a society where Muslim parents have Christian Children and Muslim husbands have Christian or even animist wives and vice versa?

“There are Yoruba Muslim parents whose children do not go to Mosque and Yoruba Christian parents whose children are Baba or Iyalawo.

“This freedom of faith which has enriched Yoruba civilisation for centuries is what religious extremists, rabid and riotous fanatics and religious anarchists, sponsored by international terrorists are desperate to destroy, fortunately, to their own peril, at the fullness of time.

“Having destabilised the North, the proponents want to destabilise the South West and uproot the very foundation of democracy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The intrigue is political, sponsored by vested interests, aimed at polarising the political and electoral fortunes of Yoruba Nation who for many Years have largely defined a common political future.”

They argied that no great nation would wish to have different laws for her own people of the same history and the same heritage.

“We, the true representatives of Yoruba people hereby strongly oppose any attempt, open or covert to introduce Sharia in any part of Oduduwaland of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Delta, Kogi, Edo, Kwara and Ondo States.

“We hereby warn religious bigots and extremists, including very naïve and shallow-minded political actors to desist from their evil plots or they will face the full wrath of Yoruba people.”

Imo: Celebration In Orsu As Blood-thirsty Kidnapper Is Gunned Down Alongside Mother

Kidnapper Mpompo Nwa killed in Orsu

By Charles Igbo

It is not that it will be the end of kidnappings and killings in the long-suffering  Orsu area of Imo State and its people, but for now, the people are celebrating. They have a reason to do that even if it is for a short while.

It is a breath of fresh air that began last week when a bloodthirsty kidnapper was killed by Security Personnel.

Simply known as “Mpompo Nwa”, the icing on the cake for the people is that his conniving mother was, also, killed.  It was like sending her to join her son so as to keep conniving with him in hell.

Reports say that Mpompo Nwa had put the people of Orsu through hell and back with his cruel activities. He was said to be involved in kidnappings for ransom, torture and killing of his victims.

But the sad aspect is that his mother, allegedly, knew the business her son was involved in but instead of trying to stop him, she encouraged him by keeping his guns and the millions he made from people for him.

However, last week, according to reports, Mpompo Nwa and his mother found themselves in a difficult situation. They met their waterloo

Both were killed in a gun battle with security agents.

The people are celebrating their deaths. And their freedom, no matter how brief.

Orsu is an epicentre of Kidnappings and killings in Imo State.

“You Deploy Military To Fight Illegal Oil Bunkering In Niger Delta But Turn Blind Eye To Illegal Mining In The North” – Oshiomhole To FG

Adams Oshiomhole
Senator Adams Oshiomhole.

By Gideon Njoku

One of the most active voices in the Senate, Adams  Oshiomhole, has accused the Federal of double standards in its handling of economic sabotage in the Niger Delta and the North.

Oshiomhole, a two- term Governor of Edo State, now Senator, representing Edo North Senatorial Zone, accused the Federal Government of hitting very hard at Illegal oil bunkerers in the Niger Delta, while it turns a blind eye, or at worst, treats with kid gloves, Illegal miners in the North.

A former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, as well as a former Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Oshiomhole who is, also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, spoke on Friday, when the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals Development, Senator Sampson Ekong, submitted its report to the Senate Committee on Appropriations. Oshiomhole is a member of the Appropriations Committee.

Contributing during the presentation of the report, Oshiomhole said no effort of the Government in its bid to diversify the economy would amount to anything if the FG does not take seriously the embarrassing Illegal mining going on in the country, particularly, in the North. He urged the President Tinubu Government to stand up to the Illegal miners with a sledge hammer as it does to Illegal oil bunkering in the   Niger Delta.  He says the Federal Government knows these big men behind the illegal businesses, but does nothing. Oshiomhole, also,  revealed that he wrote a letter to former President Muhammadu Buhari, where he provided evidence, and urged him to move in and arrest the big men, but that nothing came out of his efforts. He was ignored.

While not saying why the FG turns, almost, a blind eye to  Illegal miners, Oshiomhole disclosed that retired Army Generals are behind the unwholesome business as well as behind banditry and kidnappings. Perhaps, not a few people say now, it is the fear of the alleged Generals that stops the FG from dealing decisively with the illegal miners.

Oshiomhole: “Whereas the Federal Government is ruthless with people who are doing illegal oil bunkering by deploying the Joint Military Task Force to deal with them, when it comes to illegal mining of solid minerals, the Federal Government changes.

“It’s like using different standards and I am very angry about that.

“If we have to fight this menace, we need to deploy the Army even to kill anyone who is involved in the illegal pumping of oil. We should also deploy JTFs, comprising the Army, Police, Air Force, against them.

“The ongoing illegal mining across the country are being carried out by retired generals and we know them.

“Yes, we know them. Nobody in Africa doesn’t know them. I did a letter to former President Muhammadu Buhari on the matter when he was in office. This is because a team that I sent to go and conduct the primary somewhere, reported back, to me, the challenge of conducting primary elections in Zamfara because of the illegal miners.

“The team told me that those illegal miners procure arms exactly the same way the military is doing in South Sudan. They give them arms. They use choppers to come and cart away the gold and they take them out of this country and make billions of U.S. dollars.

“Unfortunately, the Federal Government is not doing what it should be doing. I took this letter to the former President, when I was the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress and I said, call the General to give you more briefing. In fact, what is happening, or what is supposed to really happen in that part of the country, was exactly what the General told me was going to happen.

“These guys have been weaponised by the big men who deployed a secure territory. The weaponry was made to protect the Chinese and other foreigners and that’s why they actually are going to carry out the mining. So, retired Military Officers, and Army Officers, are involved in it. The day we can’t tell the truth, this country cannot flourish. That is what is going on with the mining sub-sector.

“It is not that we don’t know where it is. We have a whole survey of where we can find them across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

“Even as we are talking now, they are still those illegal miners and those guys are getting richer when they get poorer. Who can afford to buy the chopper, land in an illegal mining site, cart away gold, and immediately, they are on the way to the airport, to take them out of the country? This is happening.

“My position is that we shouldn’t be lamenting. We should fix the problem. We should tell the Executive, you must deploy exactly the same force that you deployed against illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta.

“That same force should be deployed to deal with criminals who have money. When I say criminal, it can be a retired General, it can be a retired Permanent Secretary, it can be a retired Trade Unionist or a retired Labour Leader.”

While Nigerians await the reaction of both FG and the Military High Command to Oshiomhole’s serious submission, a retired Army Brigadier General, and former Commander, 1 Division, Nigerian Army, John Sura, has dismissed Oshiomhole’s accusation as bunkum. “It is the highest level of falsehood that anybody can ever peddle”, Sura told The Punch in an interview.

FUOYE VC In Trouble Over Allegation Of Sexual Harassment, Council Probes Him

0
Prof Abayomi Fasina - FUOYE VC

By Ayodele Oni

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, (FUOYE), Prof Abayomi Fasina, is in an embarrassing situation. He is to face an Investigation Committee over allegation of sexual harassment.

The Governing Council of the University has  approved the setting up of a nine-member committee to investigate allegation of sexual harassment levelled against the Vice-Chancellor.

This decision follows various online reports detailing accusations made by a female staff member, Mrs. Folasade Adebayo, who alleged immoral advances by the Vice-Chancellor.

In a statement released on Friday by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Mufutau Ibrahim, the Committee was directed to conduct a comprehensive investigation and uncover the truth behind the allegations. Time frame is three weeks.

He said the Committee is expected to get to the root of the matter and present its findings to the Council within the stipulated time.”

The statement further read:

“The Governing Council at its emergency meeting held on Friday, 24th January, 2025 noted that the online outfits, the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) and Sahara Reporters published a series of audio tapes alleging that the Vice-Chancellor sexually harassed Engr. Mrs Folashade Adebayo, a Deputy Director, of Works in the University.

“Because the Vice-Chancellor was accused, Council excused him from the meeting.”

Ibrahim explained that the Governing Council extensively discussed the issues and observed that the Federal University Oye-Ekiti has been in the news lately for the wrong reasons and that the negative stories are obscuring the remarkable achievements of the University.

“The Council consequently set up a nine-member committee to investigate the allegations thoroughly and get to the root of the matter, within three weeks with the following terms of Reference:

“The committee is mandated to investigate the source of the viral audios recording alleging the immoral moves by the Vice-Chancellor and the purchase of the positions of the Bursar and Registrar;

“To investigate the motive behind the recording; and to investigate how the recording gained currency in the social media;

“To investigate the allegations of Mrs. Folasade Adebayo, particularly the allegation of immoral advances against the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi S. Fasina;

“To review all previous actions/efforts by the police, the immediate past chairman of Council and others at unravelling the allegations made by Engr. Folasade Adebayo against the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi S. Fasina; and To investigate any other matter relating to the allegations.”

He noted that the Council hopes to consider the report of the committee at its next meeting scheduled for the third week of February, 2025.

“In the meantime, the Council wishes to encourage members of the University community and the general public to remain calm and focused as the Council is determined to do justice and there will be no sacred cows.”

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of FUOYE, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, had earlier denied the allegations. He stated that the Governing Council would establish a Committee to review the matter.

He said, “Well, the one of suspending anybody is premature. It’s totally premature because that matter had been on before I came here, and my predecessor tried to resolve it in a peaceful way – to see the both parties to talk about it.

“And, Engineer Adebayo didn’t appear to be satisfied because she still wrote another petition. And those audios have gained a wider circulation, and they are now different versions.

“So we took a decision that the council should set up a committee. So council is having an emergency meeting this morning to discuss a matter. So we are going to be setting up a Committee that will hear from both Mrs Adebayo and from the vice chancellor.

“And then we’ll look at all previous efforts, including police investigations of the matter because the police had investigated this matter, and there is a police report. Then also, the council will set up a committee today. We have an emergency meeting, council meeting today, and, we’ll await the outcome of the committee.”

When asked if the council might suspend Engineer Adebayo and whether he had taken sides on the matter, Ndoma-Egba replied, saying, “I said the council is setting up a Committee today.

“So if I had taken sides, I would have announced my decision, which would have been improper because I’m Pro Chancellor. But there is a Council, and every decision must be taken by the council, not the Pro Chancellor. And that is why it became necessary for us to summon an emergency council meeting to discuss it.”
