In a statement released to the Nigerian Exchange, NGX, Group on Sunday, January 26, 2025, the Bank announced that it has secured the full regulatory approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC in respect of its recently concluded Hybrid Offer, comprising of a Rights Issue of 5,232,748,964 Ordinary Shares of 50k each at N36.00 per share and Public Offer of 2,767,251,036 Ordinary Shares of 50k each at N36.50 per share.

The Public Offer was 160.47 percent subscribed, with a total of 4,440,587,250 Ordinary Shares allotted based on the terms of the Offer and the CBN’s Capital Verification Exercise. The Rights Issue was also 100.18 percent subscribed with a total 5,232,748,964 ordinary shares allotted.

Lauding the development, the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive of Zenith Bank Plc, Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji, OON, said: “The success of our combined Rights Issue and Public Offering is a testament to the strong confidence and trust that our shareholders, investors, and stakeholders have in Zenith Bank’s vision, strategy, and brand. This landmark transaction underscores our commitment to strengthening our capital base, enhancing our competitive edge, and positioning ourselves for sustainable growth and profitability. We deeply acknowledge the invaluable and strong support of our regulators, the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Securities and Exchange Commission, and are grateful for their guidance in ensuring the integrity and efficacy of the exercise. This successful transaction will enable us to continue delivering value to our stakeholders, while also contributing to the growth and development of the economy.”

Proceeds from the Hybrid Offer will be strategically deployed to solidify the Bank’s position as the leading financial institution in Nigeria. Additionally, the funds will support the Bank’s expansion into other markets in Africa and Europe, investment in technology and other Group-wide growth initiatives.

The Offer, which opened on August 1, 2024 and closed on September 23, 2024 and sought to raise N290 billion through a combination of a Rights Issue and Offer for Subscription, was successfully executed largely as a digital Offer, embracing the power of technology to improve access to the equity capital market as it seamlessly leveraged the Nigerian Exchange Limited’s e-Offer platform.

The results of the Hybrid Offer, which garnered substantial interest from domestic and international investors, has positioned the Bank as one of the few banks in Nigeria to meet and even surpass the CBN’s N500 billion minimum capital requirements for Banks with International Authorization well ahead of the March 2026 regulatory deadline. The Bank’s share capital will now rise to N614.65 billion, which is N114.65 billion above the regulatory minimum requirement.

LGAs Financial Autonomy: Tinubu’s Men Frustrating Implementation Of Supreme Court’s Verdict

0
President Bola Tinubu

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Presidency is not serious about the implementation of the Local Government Financial Autonomy, according to he National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE.

NULGE National President Hakeem Olatunji Ambali made the assertion at the weekend, the Nigerian Tribune reports.

He accused some top presidency officials of delaying the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment on the matter, wondering why it has become so difficult to adhere to the verdict of the highest court in the country.

In July 2024, the Supreme Court made a landmark judgment allowing the 774 local governments in the country to have financial autonomy free from State government control.

As part of the historical verdict, the apex court in the country directed that the joint account between state governments and LGAs are illegal, the Councils, the Court declared must open their own Accounts with the Central bank for Nigeria, CBN.

More than six months after the judgment, ALGON said the accounts were yet to be opened due to frustrations from some top officials of the federal

Ambali said, “We know that some saboteurs under Mr. President’s government are behind,” the delay.

He added, “So, we call on President Bola Tinubu to act promptly so that these saboteurs do not cause problems for his government.

“This decision to fund local governments directly is one of the most popular measures taken by this government. This was affirmed by the wild jubilation across the country when the Supreme Court issued its judgment. So, one wonders why the implementation of this judgment is being delayed. The sooner the judgment is implemented, the better for us.

“Mr. President must take direct action and remove the stumbling blocks some people are placing in the way to frustrate the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment.”

When probed further on the issue  Ambali said, “We place the blame solely on the Federal Government, not the Governors Forum. If the Federal Government were serious about implementing this Court judgment, especially the critical aspect of local governments opening accounts with the CBN, that process would have been completed long ago.

“If the implementation of a Supreme Court judgment is being treated in this manner, it shows how the rule of law is being observed in Nigeria. This is the time for the Federal Government to correct this anomaly.”

Regarding the role of ALGON in the issue, he said, “ALGON is actually doing its best to fast-track the process. The Federal Government, however, is where we have an issue in the whole implementation of this judgment. Instead of making public statements about local governments not opening accounts, Federal Government officials could have issued a circular to all 774 local governments, urging them to open the accounts as a matter of urgency. Instead, they prefer to make public statements. This delay tactic is unnecessary and uncalled for.

“Therefore, our call is for the Federal Government to obey the judgment of its own Supreme Court by fast-tracking the implementation, especially by ensuring that the account-opening processes are completed without further delay. President Tinubu should send a directive immediately that the rule of law in this country must be upheld and obeyed.?

The July 2024 landmark judgment by the Supreme Court was greeted with applause from not a few Nigerians, who welcome it saying the LGAs had finally been freed from the control of state governors.

Tafawa Balewa Not Killed By Nzeogwu Coupists- Osoba

0

A former governor of Ogun state Olusegun Osobo, has recounted how he discovered the bodies of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa and the then Finance Minister, Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh in the bush after the January 15, 1966 coup.

Osoba, in a Vanguard interview, first published in 2010, narrated how he was informed of the bodies of the two Nigerian leaders in the bush, somewhere in Ota, along Lagos-Abeokuta road, Ogun State on January 21, 1966.

The journalist-turned-politician, who was then a reporter with Daily Times, laid down controversy brewing over the possibility of Balewa being shot and killed by coupists before his body dumped inside the bush with that of Okotie Eboh.

According to him, the British intelligence that was in charge of Nigeria’s security then fell flat and had no clue whatsoever about the situation in Nigeria.

He narrated that the upheaval happened at a time Nigeria hosted a Commonwealth conference, with many heads of state including Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand among others in attendance, wondering how a well-grounded and well-informed security network would allow world leaders to assemble in Nigeria for the conference few hours to a major political upheaval and a first military intervention in the history of the country.

While disputing Nigerians who got their version of the history on Balewa being shot from the British archives, Osoba insisted that such archives couldn’t have been factual, “so you cannot rely on such or use a failed report of failed people and intelligence as history; that is my argument.”

He said, “Would any serious government have risked the head of their government in a country where the military was about to strike? Supposing he was trapped in the crossfire just like the then head of government of Cyprus was caught up in the coup because he was in Enugu on a tour of the country and a guest of Michael Okpara when the coup took place?”

Giving his account as then Daily Times reporter, Osoba narrated that he got the call about the bodies around evening and the first decision he made was to get there before dusk.

“At that time, there was no SSS. What you had was called E-Branch of the Nigeria Police Intelligence Department. What you had was E-Branch and SCID. E- Branch was like today’s SSS. And someone from there phoned me and for a reporter like me who had phone, my colleagues were making jest of me that it was elitist and luxury.

“It was already 6 p.m. that day when I heard of the news and my immediate reaction was to get there before dark; so the question of looking for a photographer didn’t arise and, as Chief E. A. Oshunneye, another eye witness, his wife is still around, she can easily corroborate what I am saying, her husband would have recounted the story to her; he was coming from Abeokuta and he told me that somewhere after leaving Abeokuta, on their way to Ifo, that he stopped and that they were all peeping from the window of their vehicle to look at the place where the bodies were kept.

“And so, that was how I took my Vespa which was like having a car then. There was no traffic because there were fewer vehicles on the road and I raced there to see the body. I spoke with a lot of the villagers on the story. If people are enterprising enough, I think they should go to Ilogbo or Iyana-Ilogbo, they would find people who saw the bodies,” the former governor told Vanguard.

Continuing, Osoba insisted that he didn’t see any sign of gunshots on either Okotie-Eboh or Balewa, adding that Okotie-Eboh’s body had decomposed.

“The Okotie-Eboh body had decomposed and I didn’t even see any sign of gunshots on his body. His head was mangled; I suspect he was maltreated and manhandled. I am still suspicious of the involvement of then-government in the whole saga.

Olusegun Osoba
Ex. Gov Osoba

“How Tafawa Balewa died is not something I want to talk about. M.T. Mbu didn’t say he was the source of the manner of Tafawa Balewa’s death; he said he was told by Okigbo who was told by Ifeajuna. His own story is for empathy. He didn’t make a claim of it. He just made a statement as a minister that the man died of asthma based on what he was told. The death of Tafawa Balewa may have been influenced by elements in government who wanted to cover certain things up and now had to put his body on the same spot with Okotie-Eboh so that the story would be that the coupists put the two bodies there. I have reason to believe that there are some games played by some people in government who had a hand in it,” he added.

Explaining further, Osoba stated that he could not agree with claims that Balewa died of asthma as he was not a medical doctor, adding that he believes Nigeria’s first and last Prime Minister was not shot because of the respect he commanded not only in Nigeria but internationally. The former governor charged researchers to dig deeper into Nigerian newspaper archives for facts about the incident, insisting that nobody inside or outside the government has denied what he wrote about his experience in the Sunday Times of 23 January 1966.

“Tafawa Balewa was highly respected by everybody whether those in government or outside. He was a gentleman, he didn’t only have an image of a gentleman nationally; internationally, he was also respected. When the OAU was being formed which broke into factions then, the Casablanca group, the Nkrumah group and all kinds of groups, he was involved in bringing all the African countries together and, out of the respect he had worldwide for sorting out the issue of East and Southern Rhodesia then which had gone out of the British government, that Commonwealth conference hosted by Nigeria was the first to be held outside UK, it showed the kind of respect and affection for Tafawa Balewa. So the coupists might not want to manhandle him. And that this is why I think there was a foul play.

“In the first place, there was a coup of some majors which became very bloody in some parts of the country. It was a funny situation there was a coup where Ironsi survived. One, attempt must have been made to kill him and the federal cabinet decided to hand over to the military or the coupists and Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe was on a tour of the Carribean; so the acting president of the Senate joined to formally hand over government to Ironsi. That was the situation and after that, all the heavyweights in politics took flight. They ran away. Therefore the issue that they called everybody to come and identify Tafawa Balewa’s body didn’t arise because I still have my newspaper cuttings … even politicians from Western Region ran to Cotonou, Benin Republic.

“And I went to interview them and they said they would not return to Nigeria until the military handed over power. If such politicians ran away, what makes you think the other ministers would be around when they had already handed over power to the military and particularly at a time Major Nzeogwu was making serious statements on the radio that any major offence became death sentence? There was fear in everybody. My suspicion is that after the rein of government had been handed over to Ironsi, if Tafawa Balewa had been alive then, the government of the day would have wasted him because if Tafawa Balewa were alive, the handing over by the ministers would have been null and void because he was the head of government. So, writers and researchers still need a lot of work to do,” Osoba added.

Delta APC Dismisses Gov Oborevwori As Big Failure

0
Governor Sherrif Oborevwori

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Governor made the list of Thisday/Arise Television Best Five Performing Governors in 2024

The All Progressive Congress, APC, has, again, berated the administration of  Governor Sherrif Oborevwori for its alleged   abysmal performance.

The party on Sunday, January 26, 2025,  expressed serious concern that despite the huge resources so far accrued to the State, there is nothing tangible on the ground to show for it.

In a statement, its spokesperson ,Valentine Onojeghuo, regretted that Governor Oborevwori has woefully failed to impact positively on the people of Delta state ,since coming on board for almost two years now.

According to Onojeghuo, the Peoples Democratic Party’s Government has not been able to execute any signature projects, that actually resonate with the peoples’ aspirations and needs.

“Apart from the Effurum flyover project which every Government media hireling now gleefully points to, at any given opportunity, Governor Oborevwor’s administration has failed to deliver any other meaningful projects. and this continues to raise serious concerns among the people of Delta state who are desperate for real developmental changes.

“Not surprisingly, instead of formulating innovative policies and ideas to address the critical challenges confronting the state’s crumbling infrastructure and job creation, as any responsible Government would do, Governor Sheriff Oborovwori’s administration has become increasingly deceptive, hiding behind vague and grandiose promises of future projects rather than taking concrete action today”, the APC stated.

The party, insisted that the true essence of governance revolves around the pragmatic tackling of the daily needs of the people.

According to the APC, it is the duty of any responsive leader to govern in such a way that positively impacts the lives of the people ,.

To do otherwise ,the party noted,is to take an inglorious flight from realities and dwelling on the delusory world of unfulfilled promises amidst rising expectations from the people.

The APC, therefore, expressed deep concern over the PDP-led administration’s failure to demonstrate any clear vision or actionable plan to tackle the myraid of challenges facing Deltans .

The Party faulted the position of the sta3te Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu ,to the effect that Government will respond to the barrage of criticisms by showcasing its practical achievements ,rather than joining issues with the opposition .

The APC, noted that such flimsy response by the Government represents gross act of lukewarmness and insensitivity towards the wellbeing of the people ..

” This is a laughable attempt to deflect attention from the growing concerns of Deltans about the State’s  development developmental trajectory .

“It is not only misleading, but also a futile effort to distract the public from urgent issues affecting the State

“It is no longer a secret that Delta state is grappling with numerous challenges ranging from inadequate infrastructure to lack of economic opportunities for our youth “, the APC noted .

Onojeghuo cautioned the Commissioner for Information on the need to exercise restraint in reacting to genuine concerns of the people.

The party nevertheless expressed its unflinching commitment towards holding the Government accountable to the people.

The Source reports that the APC’s scathing criticism ,is coming on the heels of its flat rejection of the speculated defection of Governor Oborevwori to the party

Penultimate week, the APC, in shooting down growing rumours of the Governor joining forces with the party, informed that he will be a huge  liability on account of the monumental failure of his administration.

However, the Governor has denied any such defection plan to the APC.

For the records, the Delta State Governor is one of the five Governors selected by Thisday/Arise Board of Editors, as one of the best performing Governors in 2024.

Anambra South Vacant Seat, Senate Admits Delay, As People Clamour For By-Election

Nigerian Senate

By Ayodele Oni

The people of Anambra South Senatorial District are agitating for a new person to represent them at the Senate six months after the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

Ubah passed away in July last year while on holiday abroad.

In line with the  Constitution, a bye election ought to have been conducted within 90 days after his demise. But this had not been done as INEC recently announced that it is not aware of his demise

The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Mazi Ejimofor Opara over the weekend urged the Senate to perform its functions by communicating to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the vacant Anambra South Senatorial District seat at the red chamber.

The APGA spokesman maintained that “Much as we do not know the communication channel between INEC and the Senate, we urge both bodies to do the needful and save the electorates of Anambra South Senatorial District the pains of not having a representative at the Red Chambers.”

Reacting to the call,  Senate over the weekend allayed  fears being entertained at various quarters over the delay in the conduct of the bye election for Anambra South Senatorial District.

INEC had through the Anambra Resident Electoral Commission, (REC) Dr Elizabeth Agu stated that the Senate is yet to inform the Commission officially about the death of Sen Ifeanyi Ubah a development that is currently unsettling the polity.

According to the Chief Of Staff to the Senate President, Mr Chinedu Akubueze, the Senate is working on the process of informing the INEC about the death and vacancy of Anambra South Senatorial District seat.

“We have processes for the information to the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC and we are working on the relevant processes.

“In the shortest time possible the INEC would be furnished with the necessary correspondence in order to give impetus for the conduct of the bye election”

Akubueze further urged the electorate in Anambra South Senatorial District to be calm as the Senate would certainly do the needful for the vacant seats to be filled .

“For the people in Anambra South Senatorial District there is nothing to fear about because the Senate would in the short while do the needful for the purposes of conducting a bye election in the Zone.”

Muslim Body Dares Govt, Monarch, Insists Sharia Has Come To Stay In Ekiti

Sharia

By Ayodele Oni

The brickbats continue in Ekiti State over the birth of Sharia Court, which has conducted its first public sitting in the state capital.

Despite the state government position that there is no room for Sharia law in the state statute, a Muslim group has risen to defend the Sharia law in the state insisting that the Muslim law has come to stay.

The Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adedugbe at the weekend also issued an order proscribing any form of Sharia law or committee in the state.

The monarch, announced the dissolution of the Sharia panel established at the Central Mosque, Ado Ekiti, to promote peaceful coexistence and maintain law and order within the community.

Adejugbe made his statement during a meeting with local chiefs, community members, and the Chief Imam, Sheik Jamiu Kewulere, who is also the President of the League of Imams and Alfas in the Southwest, Edo, and Delta states. This gathering addressed rising tensions surrounding the Sharia panel.

This decision followed closely after the state government clarified that the existing legal framework in Ekiti State does not recognize the Sharia Court or any Sharia Arbitration Panel.

The state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Dayo Apata (SAN), responded to reports of the panel’s first public sitting, which had resolved two marriage disputes.

He stated that matters concerning Islamic, Christian, and traditional marriages and inheritance had been handled effectively by the Customary Court, Customary Court of Appeal, and High Court, without conflict.

Earlier, Chief Imam Kewulere, who attended the meeting with the monarch, confirmed the establishment of Sharia committee, noting that it had successfully resolved one marriage dispute and adjourned another. He rejected all allegations of sinister motives behind its creation.

Kewulere emphasised that Muslims and followers of other faiths had enjoyed harmonious relations, stating, “The committee was fundamentally created to address inheritance matters for the benefit of our members.”

He dismissed claims that it was intended to incite conflict and denied any external influence or involvement.

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Ekiti State Area Unit disagreed with the position of the state government and Ado monarch on the Sharia committee.

MSSN said it “expresses its deep concern regarding the pronouncement by the Ewi in Council to halt the Independent Shari’a Arbitration Panel, which was officially established by the leadership of the Muslim community, despite the involvement of key stakeholders in the state.”

The statement signed on behalf of the Muslim Body by Jimoh Owonifari Kareem  added that “This decision is seen as a clear indication of animosity towards Islam and Muslims in Ekiti State.

“It is regrettable that influential figures, including the Attorney General, can be swayed by unfounded social media outcries fueled by individuals with ulterior motives.

“This response, based on misinformation and misrepresentation, not only undermines the dignity of Muslims in the state but also represents a significant form of oppression and injustice.

“Numerous arbitration panels exist in Ekiti State that are publicly featured on radio and television without facing any condemnation. We question how many of these panels have been criticized by the Ewi in Council or deemed in violation of legal standards by the State Attorney General.

“This situation is a direct affront to the office of the President General of the League of Imams and Alfas in Yoruba Land, Edo, and Delta states, who is also from Ekiti State. This dignified individual has consistently promoted peace and coexistence among all, regardless of faith.

“To suggest he could incite chaos, as insinuated by certain parties, is an insult to his office and to the entire Muslim community in Yoruba Land.

“It is essential to clarify that the Shari’a Arbitration Panel in Ekiti is designed solely to resolve disputes among willing Muslims in accordance with Islamic principles. Its primary goal is to provide a peaceful platform for conflict resolution, fostering unity, understanding, and adherence to Islamic ethics.

“The panelists aim to interpret Allah’s injunctions and provide guidance based on Shari’a principles. Any claims that this panel adversely affects the state are, in our view, a subtle expression of animosity towards Islam and Muslims.

“The establishment of the Shari’a panel brought immense joy to the MSSN Ekiti Area Unit, as we have historically adhered to Shari’a principles in our activities since the creation of Ekiti State.

“Our commitment to Shari’a has bolstered our harmonious relationships and progress, evident in our successful schools and economic empowerment initiatives, which adhere to non-interest-based principles.

“Many non-Muslims have shown interest in enrolling their children in our schools due to the moral standards upheld through our Shari’a compliance.

“Furthermore, our practices extend to burial rites, as we ensure our deceased are laid to rest in Muslim cemeteries, reflecting our adherence to Shari’a. The MSSN Ekiti State Area Unit’s commitment to Shari’a has been longstanding and has not infringed upon the rights of others or created chaos within the state.

“As a law-abiding entity, the MSSN Ekiti State Area Unit will continue to uphold Shari’a principles. We will resist any attempts to obstruct our practices or deny us our fundamental religious rights, viewing such actions as deliberate attempts to hinder our progress and that of future generations. We are committed to utilizing all legal means to defend our rights.

“Our Shari’a Arbitration Panel, established by previous leadership, has successfully resolved numerous marital disputes and conflicts among Muslims, fostering peace, unity, and collective career advancement among our members.

“The Shari’a Arbitration Panel will remain an integral part of our operations within the MSSN Ekiti State Area Unit. We firmly believe that no individual or group can prevent us from practicing our faith.”

“This is A Tragedy” –  Gov Mbah Laments Enugu Tanker Explosion

Enugu Tanker Explosion

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has blamed the tragic explosion of a fuel-laden truck in Enugu on break failure.

This is even as the Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, announced the take-over of all medical expenses of the injured .

The Source reports that several persons were burnt to death in an explosion which  involved a  petrol tanker at Ugwu Onyema along the Enugu/Onitsha expressway in Udi Local Council of Enugu State on Saturday morning, January 25, 2025.

The tanker reportedly fell down while negotiating the sloppy end of the express way, leading to spills and explosion

The resultant inferno ,was said to have burnt some vehicles and their occupants who were caught by the explosion.

But the FRSC, Enugu Sector Commander ,Franklin Agbakoba, while briefing Governor Mbah, who paid an on the spot visit to the accident scene late Saturday evening, informed that the tanker lost control and fell, owing to  break failure.

He put the official death toll at  11 persons ,with several others injured .

According to the FRSC Sector Commander, identified injured persons were taken immediately to the hospital where they are presently being attended to .

He appreciated the state Governor for his timely visit to the scene  and identification with the victims of the sad development.

Meanwhile, Governor Mbah has directed that henceforth, all tankers and other vehicles conveying inflammable products in the State must have anti-spill lock that will prevent spill in the event of accident.

While describing the incident as very unfortunate, the Enugu state Governor noted that the  state authorities have put in place adequate security measures to prevent a repeat of such a development..

According to him, apart from ensuring a strict enforcement of extant traffic rules and regulations, the Enugu state Government, he assured,  will take steps to begin palliative works on some Federal roads in the state .

“As a Government ,we are also taking quick measures. I have just been speaking with the Head of the Federal Road Safety Corps to make sure they enforce the rules that prohibit tanker drivers from road without an anti-spill lock .

“Tankers conveying premium motor  spirit and inflammable products must have an anti-spill lock to ensure that when these trucks fall down ,they do not spill. It is very important.

“Also, for us, as a Government ,we are going to be looking at how we can. deploy some traffic rules to ensure that we do not have a recurrence of this .

“We are also not going to wait for the Federal Government to fix the other section of this highway . We, as a Government, are going to take steps to ensure that what ever needs to be done is done immediately so we would never have a recurrence of this kind of unfortunate incident” Governor Mbah stated

The Governor informed  that all  necessary measures have been put in place for the injured victims to receive adequate medical attention.

Similarly, he assured that the state authorities will institute a full scale investigation to unravel the true circumstances surrounding the incident.

“In the meantime, we have moved those that are in need of treatment to the hospitals for full medical attention .

“My Commissioner for Health and also the Special Adviser on Health ,the Chief Medical Director of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital ESUTTH , the Police and the FRSC are all involved .

“They have my instruction to ensure that adequate medical attention is given to the survivors .

“This is an accident involving a tanker, and preliminary investigation has shown that the truck had a break failure, fell down ,had its products ,premium motor spirit, spilled from the  tank and ignited. PSo this is, for us,  a tragedy where we have some casualties.

“But as  I said, investigation is still at preliminary stages . The police and other law enforcement agencies are on it .

“We want to get to the root of this for us to understand the cause (s) of the accident” Governor Mbah noted

Aminu Sahabi - EFCC Officer

How Abacha Escaped Abduction By Diya In I997 – Fadipe, Diya’s CSO

0
Oladipupo Diya and Sani Abacha

By Gideon Njoku

More facts are emerging that, perhaps; the once-dismissed-as- phantom-Diya Coup was  real, afterall.

The first inkling came from Col Bello Fadile, rtd,  in his recently released book,  “Nine Lives: The Inspiring Story of Col. Bello Fadile”.

Fadile was one of those condemned to death at the time, with, among others, then Chief of Staff, Lt Gen Oladipo Diya, and Major General Abdulkarim Adisa. However, most Nigerians still doubted the authenticity of that alleged aborted coup plot against the General Abacha regime.

But now comes Major Seun Fadipe, a gallant officer who was one of those tried in connection with the alleged coup plot. He was the Chief Security Officer, CSO, to then Chief of General Staff, Diya. As CoS, Diya was second in Command to Abacha.

During their trial, Fadipe was praised by the Tribunal for having the courage to admit that there was indeed a plan to topple the Abacha regime.

And, this other day, in an interview on Channel’s Television with Laolu Akande, Fadipe let Nigerians know that even before the shocking news of the Coup plot broke, there was a plot, in 1997, to abduct Abacha in Enugu, South-east Nigeria.

He disclosed that his then boss, Diya, was aware  of the plot meant to be carried out  during the Army Training Conference in Enugu. Abacha was billed, as the Commander-in-Chief,  to declare it open  And, according to Fadipe, Diya and some other unnamed top Officers had planned to abduct Abacha on arrival in Enugu, and so, force him to resign from office as Head of State.

This was before Diya himself escaped a bomb planted planted inside the aircraft he was billed to travel in at the Abuja Airport.

However, Abacha escaped the plot when he got  wind of it. Apparently, as from the time of that aborted plan to abduct Abacha, Diya and his co-travellers  became “marked men”.

Fadipe: “On the 9th of December 1997, we got to the office, and after the pleasantries with my boss, the ADC left. Once the ADC leaves, I will give my boss the security briefing for the period and after, he said: ‘Are you sure all is well?’

“That was before the bomb attempt on the 13th of December 1997. That was the first time he told me directly that something was in the offing.

“A day before then, the Chief of Army Training Conference just took off in Enugu, and Abacha, being the C-in-C was supposed to open the event. The man (Abacha) had left the Villa and then on his way to the airport, all of a sudden, the man came back.

“So, after some time, my boss called me and told me that the man aborted his trip and he was back in the villa. My boss was a bit worried.
