INEC Chairman Tasks CSOs On Political Parties’ Primaries

Prof Mahmood Yakubu

By Ayodele Oni

Chairman, of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) Prof Mahmood Yakubu has urged Civil Society Organisations, (CSO) to show interest in political party primaries as they are actively engaged in the monitoring of secondary elections conducted by the commission.

Prof Yakubu spoke on Tuesday, at the first regular quarterly consultative meeting for the year 2025 held at the INEC Headquarters, Abuja.

According to Prof Yakubu, some of CSOs have made actionable recommendations on how to curtail the menace which have been favourably considered by the Commission.

“It is time to cast your net wide by focusing on the incidence of delegate-buying by aspirants during primaries.

“Some delegates openly boasted of how much money they made from aspirants during party primaries. You should intensify your advocacy in support of the practical steps taken by the relevant security and law enforcement agencies to tackle this diabolical practice.”

He noted that after all, only the candidates nominated by the political parties are placed on the ballot paper for citizens to vote for on Election Day.

“From your monitoring reports as accredited election observers, you have consistently expressed concern over vote-buying at Polling Units during elections.”

Prof Yakubu revealed that the Commission has released the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) which is the only part of the country where INEC conducts Local Government election.

“The election will be held on Saturday 21st February 2026. As you are aware, the four-year tenure of the six Chairmen and 62 Councillors will end next year. The last Area Council election was held on 12 February 2022. The Timetable for the election is already uploaded to our website. Further details will be discussed at this meeting.

Mr. Ezenwa Nwagwu of Partners for Electoral Reforms, who spoke on behalf of CSOs present at the meeting welcomed INEC’s call for greater vigilance and pledged to step up their monitoring efforts ahead of the upcoming elections.

“We will work closely with INEC and other stakeholders to ensure that the electoral process is free, fair, and credible.”

Ten Travellers Kidnapped Along Owo – Benin Highway

Gunmen

By Ayodele Oni

Not less than ten travellers have been kidnapped by gunmen along the Owo-Benin Road.

The incident, which happened early Tuesday, has again caused fear among travellers along the ever busy highway, which has, for sometime, been safe due to activities of Security Agents.

The victims were said to be returning to Akure from a South-South State.

The kidnappers reportedly ambushed the travellers, forcing them out of the commercial vehicle which they boarded. The vehicle was later found abandoned by the roadside.

Other motorists, upon discovering that gunmen were on prey on the highway, made a detour, while some abandoned their vehicles and alerted the nearby security posts.

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Command Spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, stated that seven people were abducted.

She added that investigations were underway and assured that updates would be provided as they emerged.

Meanwhile, sources disclosed that the kidnappers had reached out to the victims’ families, demanding ransom for their release.

OPINION: Kiri, The Priest Who’s Changing The Game

If ACOTA were a corporate body, the MD, a certain Mr Kiri Wakama would currently be receiving global acclaims as a game-changer who led a corner start-up shop  to a conglomerate.

But we are in the spiritual arena here. Specifically, a church  under the Anglican umbrella. It’s trite to say that a true Christian has no power of his own. In everything,  we are led by God, through the Holy Spirit, who uses us for his purposes, and all glory must return to him.

Having said that, this exciting story of the work of our Lord must be told that we may learn therefrom in furtherance of his Church and His Kingdom. Just as we read today,  the story of Moses, Joseph, Nehemiah and Paul, to name just a few chosen men.

CHANGING THE GAME FOR THE LORD: On December 12, 2023, about 14 bishops led by the Diocesan Bishop of Lagos, The RT. REVD. Ifedola Okupevi converged upon the Anglican Church of Transformation, Abijo (ACOTA). It wasn’t a Nigerian Bishops’ conference. No.

It was the Dedication of ACOTA. A magnificent three-level edifice on Km 42 of the Lekki-Epe Expressway. It’s probably among the best purpose-built worship places in Nigeria today.

On that 12th day of the 12th month of 2023,  12 bishops expected. But it turned out a carnival of the clergy and laity. The occasion was so overwhelming  that the Diocesan, in a moment of solemnity, noted that if “the congregation opened their eyes, they would see the glory of God.”

That was a little over a year ago. This time, last Saturday 1st February, 2O25 precisely, ACOTA achieved another landmark in the annals of Lagos Diocese. That bright, sunny day, ACOTA was inaugurated as an Archdeaconry and The VEN. KIRI WAKAMA was inducted, installed and instituted as the ARCHDEACON.

About five bishops were in attendance. Led once again by the Diocesan of Lagos,  Bishop Okupevi and his wife. The church was filled to the brim. Vehicles spilled on to the road stretching down almost a kilometre.

Quite significant on the day, was the presence of a notable clergy, THE MOST. REVD Ephraim Adebola Ademowo, retired Bishop of Lagos and Dean emeritus of Church of Nigeria. Ademowo was led to play important roles in the pastoral rise and growth of Ven. Kiri.

Preaching on the day, The Rt. Revd. Yinka Akinlade, Bishop of Ife, explained the magnitude of the occasion. His opening words are: “This day is a miracle.”  And after detailing Ven. Kiri’s pastoral journey, he affirmed that Kiri Wakama indeed, had “broken records” to reach the height of an administrative archdeacon raising a church from scratch in less than two decades.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN: Ven. Kiri  was a only a postulant (seminary student) in 2007 when he was assigned to pastor a small church planted in an obscure corner of Abijo two years earlier.

Two years later, in 2009, Kiri through hard work, vision, divine unction, and under the supervision of the Anglican Church on the Peninsular (ANCOPEN), moved the backstreet church to the roadside along the Expressway. He had become a deacon and was officially announced the vicar of the Church. But he knew the church needed a more visible location to grow. How a church with a pittance of weekly offering could afford a prime roadside land is a story to be told another day.

A bigger church was built. A wooden church by the road side with an oversized signboard. The new church was derisively called the “Match-box Church with a big signboard.”

The church was dedicated by His Grace, Archbishop Ademowo, the then Diocesan Bishop of Lagos on January 31st, 2010 and named, The Anglican Church of Transformation, Abijo (ACOTA).

From then on, ACOTA began to grow ceaselessly. A second service was introduced,  yet it was apparent that the church was divined for greatness.

In 2015, it became obvious that the work of God was being circumscribed and choked up. A larger expanse of land was acquired across the Expressway , almost opposite the wooden church. And that may have marked the beginning of the making of the ACOTA Archdeaconry.

The new site was christened GOSHEN (a place in Egypt given exclusively to the Jews (children of God, Genesis 45); a place of preservation and deliverance.

Eight years later, an imposing sanctuary of worship was completed and dedicated. Last Saturday,  it was inaugurated an Archdeaconry of the Diocese Lagos,  Anglican Church.

A MAN LED BY GOD: From the abridged story above,  it’s obvious that Kiri Wakama is a man especially elected by God for his big purposes. It takes some established churches over 50 years to be elevated to the status of an archdeaconry.  But here’s a church planted less than 20 years ago.

For many reasons,  ACOTA was never destined to be something more than a rustic church in the heart of Abijo. One, land in the Lekki axis is hot commodity and two, the swampy and sandy terrain make building daunting and costly.

All these factors didn’t seem to deter Kiri, an architect who excelled as a banker. A late entrant to the service,  it is said that it took the divine intervention of Bishop Ademowo to have him admitted into the seminary.

HIS KEY SUCCESS FACTORS: Kiri’s story is not unlike God moving Nehemiah from his comfort zone in the King’s Palace in a foreign land to go rebuild the fallen walls of Jerusalem by fire, or by force. Kiri had to switch gears from a gilt-edged corporate world to building a new Jerusalem for the Lord.

Indeed, you have to be truly in the spirit to achieve a feat like this.  As Bishop Akinlade (Ife), one of Kiri’s spiritual fathers testified from the pulpit at the inauguration,  Kiri is a man of immense vision.  “He is gentle,  he listens and he’s very accommodating.”

Akinlade also noted that Kiri was an unconventional man who loves exploits. For instance,  he chose to mount a signboard almost bigger than  the church; he would cause luxury cars to be parked in front of the little church for effect!

The man in Ife had more accolades for Kiri: He did big crusades,  medical outreaches and his “harvests were big events.” Then he acquired a large parcel of land across the road and built an “architectural masterpiece.” An here we are today.

Okupevi couldn’t hide his joy at the occasion. He revealed to all that he knew Kiri more, being his parishioner at the Cathedral and having taught him at the seminary.

“Kiri is a crowd puller,” Okupevi told the church. Now you have 11 churches under your care. Would they be doubled by year end?”

Such is the level of confidence Lagos reposes on Kiri.

NOT IN MY WILDEST DREAMS: The newly minted Venerable was near emotional in his response. He never dreamed he would be in such spotlight as this or become a Venerable. Being a late entrant, he said all he wanted was to serve,  perhaps make a Reverend Canon and retire.

He said he would never have made it this far without his wife and soulmate, Nengi. His parishioners have been the best any priest would wish for, he noted. They made it all happen.

SOME POINTS TO NOTE: There are about five takeaways to pick from Kiri’s success.

First, maturity and diverse experience: having succeeded in the corporate world, Kiri surely brought his rich experience to bear on his pastoral calling.

He knows that everything keeps evolving with time. For instance,  the mode of worship in the Old Testament is markedly different from what obtains in the New Testament era. It’s the same principle today. While we keep an eye on the ball (faith, salvation, etc.) worship needs be tweaked to align with each age. This explains why worshipping with Kiri is a refreshing experience in numerous ways.

It would be difficult for any parishioner to leave ACOTA to a so-called new generation church. Why? ACOTA is a new generation Anglican Church!

What else makes Kiri tick? Candour, refreshing candour. You cannot help but like him. He is a man without cant, he is also possessed of a good heart that’s light and jovial. He is known for judicious use of funds, extracting value for every naira. More important, he and Mamayard reputed to give as much as he gets from parishioners.

Plus more: Branding, public relations, consumer experience, feedback, innovation, stakeholders engagement, etc. For instance,  ACOTA is intentionally positioned as a FIVE-STAR church. This has a strong significance. These  are some of Kiri’s tools of trade in the service of our Lord.

These traits  may have set Kiri apart  for divine exploits.

BOTTOMLINE: Venerable Kiri Wakama, Archdeacon of Abijo Archdeaconry, is truly a man on a mission. Again, it is trite to state that God chooses whomsoever He wishes for this specific assignments. God’s hand is surely visible here for all to see. Glory, honour and adoration be unto His name forever and ever. Amen.

Osuji is a parishioner in ACOTA.

Bola Ige’s Murder: Ladoja Denies Knowledge, Involvement, Threatens To Sue Bisi Akande

Rashidi Ladoja and Bisi Akande

By Ayodele Oni

Accusations and counter accusations continue, almost, 25 years after the gruesome murder of a sitting Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Bola Ige, SAN, with some of those, accused of knowing something about the incident, trying to exonerate themselves.

One of them, a former governor of Oyo state, Rashidi Ladoja has vehemently denied, saying that he knew nothing about the incident.

An ally of the late Attorney General and former Governor of Osun state, Chief Bisi Akande, had, in an interview with a renowned broadcaster, Edmund Obilo, in Ibadan,  described Ige’s murder as a “State murder.” He said Ige was killed by the Government, probably the Government he served under.

Akande, in the interview, also alleged that Ladoja, that succeeded late Lam Adesina as Oyo state Governor, should know something about the death of Ige because it was him that withdrew the court case filled by his predecessor to unravel Ige’s death.

Akande stated that Ladoja should be asked why and/or what happened, and emphasized that Ladoja would know more about Ige’s murder.

“There are many things that die with people. I know Lam Adesina went to Court over the matter, and I also know his successor, Ladoja, withdrew the case. Ask Ladoja, he would know more about Bola Ige’s death.

Ladoja has now replied Akande’s allegation with a threat to go to court, insisting that he did not obstruct Justice in Ige’s case.

Ladoja, now a traditional title holder in Ibadan, as Otun Olubadan refuted claims by Akande, regarding his alleged involvement in the unresolved assassination case of former Attorney General.

He maintained that he had provided full support to the prosecution, even up to the Supreme Court.

Ladoja dismissed Akande’s claims, insisting he did not know the case beyond publicly available information and warned that he would consider all possible actions, including legal steps unless Akande retracts his statement and issues a public apology.

“Chief Bola Ige was assassinated December 23rd, 2001, I got to government on 29th of May, 2003 which was 18 months after the assassination of Chief Bola Ige.

“I didn’t withdraw the case, my government didn’t withdraw any case, the case was even prosecuted till apex court, Chief Akande lied against me, this is not the first time people said he lied, someone like Baba Adebanjo even said he lied in his book.

“We are not all happy as a result of Chief Bola Ige’s death, and we are all concerned about his death, I was very close to Chief Bola Ige while alive.”

Ohinoyi Stool:  Why Anaje Will Not Vacate Palace Despite Court Ruling

0
Ahmed Muhammed Tajani Anaje

By Ayodele Oni

The Palace of Ohinoyi of Ebiraland has said that Alhaji Ahmed Tijani Anaje will not vacate the throne as ordered by a high court in Kogi State on Monday.

Spokesperson for the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Malam Abdulhakeem Onimisi, maintained that the Paramount Ruler will not vacate the throne despite the Monday court ruling.

In a telephone interview, after the Lokoja high court judgement, Onimisi clarified that the Court case was not directed at the Ohinoyi personally, but at the State Government’s involvement in the appointment process.

He emphasized that the complainant in the case, Barnabas Adeku Ojia, had sued the State Government and not the Ohinoyi himself.

When asked if the Ohinoyi would vacate the Palace in light of the Court’s decision, Onimisi explained that the Traditional Ruler had been appointed by the State Government and would continue to follow its directives.

He further stated that the Ohinoyi would not act against the State Government’s  decision, particularly if it chooses to appeal the judgment.

“The case was not between the Ohinoyi and the court, but between the government and the complainant. The issue is with the process through which the Ohinoyi was appointed, not with His Royal Majesty personally or as a king.”

He reiterated that as the State Government had been responsible for the Ohinoyi’s appointment, any actions regarding the throne would depend on the Government’s  direction.

“If the State Government decides to appeal the judgment, can the Ohinoyi say no? The case is between the state government and the complainant.”

When asked if the Ohinoyi was still in his domain, Onimisi confirmed, “Yes, we are in town, we are on ground.”

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, on Monday, February 3,2025 passionately appealed to the people to strongly resist the temptation of embarking on a reprisal attack or a resort to self help in handling Sunday’s attack by suspected herdsmen .

He condemned the attack, and  described it as worrisome and a source of serious concern to the authorities .

The Source reports that gun men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on Sunday attacked and killed several local farmers in Amegu Nkalagu community in Ishielu Local Government of the State.

Many houses and properties were also reportedly razed and destroyed by the rampaging herdsmen.

But reacting to the incident, the State Governor called on the affected people of the area to remain calm and avoid any acts capable of worsening the situation .

He, however, assured them that all efforts are being made by the Government to address the challenge.

Tension Mounts As Security Operatives Gun Down Four Over Demolition Of Structures In Kano

0

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

No fewer than four persons are believed to have lost their lives to a  demolition exercise in Rimin Auzinawa Ungogo Local Council of Kano State.

The death of the four locals, according to eye witness accounts followed a violent  confrontation between security operatives and some victims of the demolition exercise.

It was gathered that trouble began at about 10 pm Sunday when some officials of the  Kano state Urban Planning and Development Authority KNUPDA, alongside  Security Personnel  moved in to pull down over 40 illegal structures earlier marked for demolition.

The structures, most of them said to be under construction, were said to be erected on land belonging to the Bayero University Kano BUK.

But an attempt by some of the owners of the marked structures to resist the demolition exercise was said to have led to the security operatives fatally shooting four persons, according to a witness.

“The structures, mostly residential,

numbering over 40, had earlier been marked for demolition by the KNUPDA.

The land in question is said to belong to  the Bayero University Kano BUK”, a witness volunteered .

However, another victim, noted that they were goaded into going ahead with construction works by an earlier clean bill of health issued by KNUPDA to owners.

“Before now, we had been assured by the authorities, that our properties were not within the BUK land.

“But we were  surprised to see the officials and security operatives on Sunday night, at about 10pm, demolishing the structures.

“When people resisted, security personnel opened fire, and in the process, about four persons were killed, and have been buried according to Islamic rites. It is a tragic situation”,  a local and one of  the victims of the  demolition exercise stated.

As at the time of reporting, neither the Kano State Government, nor the security agencies has reacted to the development.

All attempts to speak with the authorities of KNUPDA on Monday February, 3, 2025, were unsuccessful, as its officials remained incommunicado.

Similarly, its Corporate Headquarters were almost completely deserted due to what a junior staff attributed to fear of reprisal attacks by irate locals .

“There is tension and anxiety in the office. That is why the car parks are empty. No senior officials are around.

“You can only see junior staff with no clear directive on what to do”, a junior staff noted

However, a middle level official, who craved anonymity informed that the demolition  exercise was not carried out by the KNUPDA, but by a taskforce constituted by the State Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning.

A staff of the Ministry however assured that the Kano State Government will be  issuing an official statement in that regard soon.

Cross River: PDP Accuses State Assembly Of Frustrating LG Autonomy With New Bill

0
Governor Bassey Otu
Governor Otu

By Ayodele Oni

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Cross River State Chapter, has warned Governor Bassey Otu not to assent to the Local Government Amendment Bill, recently passed by the State House of Assembly.

The party kicked against what it termed “hasty passage” of Local Government Amendment Bill 2025 by the State House of Assembly.

The party further described it as a direct contradiction of the Supreme Court’s judgment on Local Government Autonomy and an orchestrated scheme to arm-twist, emasculate, and misappropriate local government resources.

In a statement on Monday, signed by Prince Mike Ojisi, the Publicity Secretary, the party warned that there will be dire consequences if the bill is given assent by Governor Bassey Otu

The statement reads in part: “Despite widespread public condemnation, the House proceeded with the bill, defending its actions by wrongly relying on Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution, which merely empowers states to enact laws for local government administration, but not to undermine their autonomy or divert their funds.

“The PDP identifies several draconian and exploitative provisions within the bill, which place an unbearable financial burden on the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Cross River State. These include:

“Expansion of statutory political appointees under each Local Government Chairman from 25 to 50 persons, thereby increasing the financial strain on already underfunded councils.

“Unauthorized monthly deduction of 1% for House of Assembly “oversight functions.”

– 0.5% deduction for the State Community and Social Development Agency.

“1% deduction for funding the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), despite the state government’s primary responsibility for higher education funding.

” 0.5% deduction for the Office of the State Auditor General, ₦1 million mandatory monthly contribution from each LGA to the Cross River State Reserve Fund.

“4% deduction for the Cross River State Road Maintenance Agency, a responsibility that should be handled by the state government, not the local councils.

“The People’s Democratic Party sees this law as an evil plot by the Otu-led APC administration to plunder resources meant for grassroots development. The party categorically states that:

“The financial autonomy of LGAs is sacrosanct and must not be subjected to the manipulative whims of the state government.

“The hasty passage and signing of this law reveal a desperate attempt to siphon local government funds for political patronage ahead of the 2027 elections.

“The people of Cross River State must resist this oppressive, anti-development, and unconstitutional law through all legal and democratic means.

“The PDP, therefore, alerts the good people of Cross River State and the entire nation to this daylight robbery of local government funds under the guise of legislative amendments.

“The party remains committed to protecting democracy, defending local government autonomy, and ensuring that public resources are used for grassroots development rather than political enrichment.”
