An unexpected tragedy struck, Thursday, at the IBB Golf Club, Abuja, when Major General Chris Jemitola, rtd, slumped and died.

An eye witness said that the General was rushed to an undisclosed hospital. Sadly he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Shocker As INEC Closes Defence Without Witnesses At Edo Election Tribunal

INEC Tenders BVAS Used in Edo Election

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

It  was yet another melodrama from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, at the ongoing   sitting of the Edo state Election Petition Tribunal, as it, on Thursday, February 6, 2025, closed its defence without calling a single witness.

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday ,February 5, the INEC legal team led by a former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Kalu Agabi, SAN, had asked for adjournment to enable the Commission call some Witnesses  to buttress their case.

The Source reports that it has  always been the case for the electoral umpire to call in witnesses to defend results declared during  elections in the event of  disputations.

However, when the opportunity presented itself for INEC to produce witnesses to defend the declaration of All Progressive Congress, APC, Candidate,  Governor Monday Okpebholo winner against his closest rival, Peoples Democratic Party’s Chief Asue Ighodalo, INEC,  to the shock of APC and observers rather opted to close its case.

Agabi, much to the surprise of everyone, told the Tribunal that the INEC will no longer be calling witnesses as earlier promised .

Expectedly, the APC which had strongly hoped that the Commission will be calling witnesses to defend its victory, was left heavily stunned by the development.

For one, the PDP and its candidate in the September 21, 2024 off-circle election, had expressed serious reservations about the outcome of the polls as announced by INEC.

The PDP in its petition is contending that the result, as declared by the Commission, was tainted and manipulated in favour of the APC.

Specifically, the PDP is of the view that the number of votes announced far outnumbered that of accredited voters.

Thursday’s incident comes on the heels of the  tendering of about 152 BVAS Machines used for the accreditation of voters during the election by INEC.

Under subpoena from the PDP, the INEC which had initially objected to tendering the machines, last week presented 148 BVAS which the Tribunal immediately admitted in evidence.

But on Monday February 3, INEC  witnesses called by the PDP tendered four more BVAS ,much to the surprise and protestation by the APC.

Same Monday, the PDP had closed its case, exuding confidence that the BVAS will do justice to its claim of alleged over voting and bogus allocation of figures to its rival the APC.

The Tribunal has  adjourned further proceedings to February 10, 2025, with the APC scheduled to kick- start its defence.

Prof Aisha Sani Maikudi

By Ayodele Oni

President Bola Tinubu has sacked the Vice Chancellor of University of Abuja, now Yakubu Gowon University, Prof Aisha Sani Maikudi. He, also, dissolved the Governing Council of the University.

Her appointment, about three months ago, had sparked chains of protests among the academic staff of the University. They insisted that she did not merit the appointment.

A statement on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser, Information and Strategy to the President, said the changes also affected other Federal Government owned Universities.

“At Yakubu Gowon University, President Tinubu dissolved the entire Governing Council and relieved Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi of her duties as Vice-Chancellor.

“Senator Lanre Tejuoso, currently Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of the Yakubu Gowon University.

“He will be succeeded in Makurdi by Senator Joy Emordi, now pro-chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.

“To succeed Maikudi, President Tinubu appointed Prof Lar Patricia Manko as Acting Vice Chancellor at the Yakubu Gowon University for a six-month term.

“She will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice Chancellor position when it becomes available.

“In addition, President Tinubu has removed Prof Polycarp Emeka Chigbu from his position as Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), before his tenure ends on February 14.

“Prof Oguejiofu T. Ujam has been appointed as his successor for six months and will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position.

“The leadership changes at UNN extend to the role of Pro-Chancellor, with Gen. Ike Nwachukwu reassigned as Pro-Chancellor at the University of Uyo.

“President Tinubu appointed Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo as the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN. Previously, Ojo held the same position at the Federal University of Lokoja and the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.

“Prof Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi, currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, has been appointed to succeed Ojo at the Federal University of Lokoja.

“Senator Sani Stores is the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, succeeding Senator Joy Emordi. Senator Stores is a Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

“Additionally, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, a current Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has been appointed the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.

“All appointments and reassignment decisions are effective immediately.

“President Tinubu emphasised that these changes reflect his administration’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability.

“The restructuring aims to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.”

LP Reps Caucus Decries Killing Of Kidnapped Anambra Lawmaker

Police Recovers Abducted Anambra Law Makers Vehicle

The Labour Party Caucus of the House of Representatives has said that it is deeply saddened and devastated by the news of the death of its party man and member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Justice Azuka, representing Onitsha North state constituency after a prolonged period of captivity in the hands of kidnappers.

Azuka was kidnapped on Christmas eve, November 24, 2024 at about 9pm somewhere in Ugwunakpamkpa area of Onitsha while returning home after the day’s activities. Unfortunately, his decomposing body was recovered somewhere at the 2nd Niger Bridge on Wednesday, February 5.

The LP House of Representatives Caucus leader and, member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra state,  Afam Victor Ogene in a statement described the incident as “Horrendous, heart-rending and a big blow to the Labour Party and the legislature.”

The LP caucus leader had earlier in January called on the Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo to take urgent and decisive action to secure the release of the abducted state lawmaker and also address the growing insecurity in the State, which according to him “has become notorious for kidnappings and killings”.

The Rep members expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family of the late lawmaker, especially his young wife and children, who have been thrown into deep sorrow as a result of this dastardly act of great wickedness by criminals.

Hon. Ogene asked rhetorically : “How do you explain this act of wickedness? How do you comfort Hon. Azuka’s young wife that her husband would no longer return home? What do you tell the children when they grow up. This is very sad. It is condemnable and government has to truly take more decisive action to prevent this kind of destruction of life and the future of many by a few individuals who are currently laying siege on the people of Anambra state.

“As I said in my earlier statement on the kidnap of the late lawmaker,
the level of carnage going on in Anambra on a daily basis is heart-rending. People live in fear as a result of the growing insecurity. The rate of bloodletting, kidnappings and other violent crimes in the state is fast turning the state into a killing field. And this is not an exaggeration. The crime that is reported in the state is just a tiny fraction of the horrendous insecurity reality in Anambra. That’s the brutal truth.

“The horrific experiences of kidnapping survivors in Anambra underscore the dire need for improved security in the state. The government’s primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens, as well as protect their property. It is imperative that the government takes decisive action to reclaim control from criminal gangs and restore confidence among the people.

“Today, it is Hon. Justice Azuka, but no one knows whose turn it will be tomorrow. While we commend Governor Soludo’s recent efforts at tackling the situation, through the launch of the Agunachemba security outfit, more certainly, needs to be done, especially in the area of deploying technology in the fight against criminals in the state.

“For instance, how many drones does the state have in it’s crime-fighting arsenal; does the state operate a command and control centre; are the state’s vigilante services properly motivated in the battle against kidnappers and sundry criminals?

“Only two days ago, a serving local government chairman had his car riddled with bullets, in a daring kidnap attempt in Onitsha – a development which reinforces the dire need to further prioritize security,” the statement added.

The caucus prayed for the repose of the soul of the fallen lawmaker, and asked God to comfort his young family in this period of grief, and beyond.

OPINION: From America First to America Alone: The Lab Meets the Street

Azu Ishiekwene
Mr Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

It’s nearly 20 years since Mark Steyn wrote a non-fiction book, America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It.

Steyn, a Canadian newspaper columnist, could not have known that the kicker of this book title, which extolled America as the last bastion of civilisation as we know it, would become the metaphor for a wrecking ball.

Steyn thought demographic shifts, cultural decline, and Islam would ruin Western civilisation. The only redeeming grace was American exceptionalism. Nineteen years after his book, America Alone is remembered not for the threats Steyn feared or the grace of American exceptionalism but for an erratic president almost alone in his insanity.

The joke is on Steyn

In less than one month of his second presidency, Donald Trump has declared an imperial intention to seize property outside the US and rename international boundaries. He has hinted at annexing a sovereign country, criminalised migration, and dragged his largest trading partners, including his neighbours, to the negotiation table at gunpoint.

When America Alone is mentioned today, it’s not a defence against threats to Western values or civilisation; it’s simply that Trump’s America First has turned the country into a clear and present danger to the values that built and prospered America and the rest of the world. America is losing its way, alone and aloof, in a brazen insularity that evokes pity and surprise in equal measure, even amongst its harshest critics.

Yet, as Trump danced on the grave of Adam Smith by instigating a trade war that has left the world on edge and global markets in turmoil, the president appears determined to take America beyond pity, surprise, and loneliness. America will soon be ignored.

Trump’s case

What is Trump’s case against Mexico, Canada, China, America’s neighbours and its most significant trading partners? The US president accused the first two of not doing enough to control the flow of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid analgesic more than 50 times more powerful than morphine, into the US.

Apart from his perennial accusations against China of stealing US technology and other unfair trade practices, Trump also accused Beijing of sending ingredients for making fentanyl to Mexico. Mexico has been Trump’s punching bag since his first term when he wanted to build a wall funded by that country to keep out the so-called human caravans, drug cartels and other criminal gangs from entering the US.

Polariser-in-Chief

Perhaps Trump has a just cause to take America back from drugs and crime, not to mention his redemptive mission for aliens in some parts of the US now reduced to “eating the dogs and the pets.”

However, for a president who said in his second inaugural address that his “proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier,” instigating a chaotic trade war, once described by Adam Smith as “beggar-thy-neighbour”, is anything but a peace offering.

Tariffs might be the most beautiful word in Trumptionary. However, nothing sets the world on fire in the lexicon of international trade, such as tariffs, quotas, and sometimes subsidies.

A different world

Even when the world was far less interlinked than it is today, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 (enacted to protect US farmers and businesses from foreign competitors),which imposed a 20 percent tariff on imports, was resisted with retaliatory tariffs by 25 other countries, creating significant distress around the world and worsening the Great Depression.

The reality in today’s profoundly connected world is worse. Within hours of the president announcing the 25 percent tariffs, the Canadian dollar and the Mexican peso fell. The Canadian dollar reached its lowest value in 20 years, while the peso hit a four-year low. Stock markets lost billions, and commodity prices surged.

Counting the cost

Before the one-month tariff pause between the US and its neighbours, analysts forecast the tariffs would hinder US GDP growth by approximately 0.25% to 0.3%. The tariffson Canada and Mexico alone could decrease over all economic output by around $45billion, with potential losses escalating to $75 billion following retaliatory measures.

Of course, these are all aside from the potential impact of unilateral tariffs on US jobs and consumer prices and a global supply chain crisis in fragile recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pause does not affect China, and a tariff war between the world’s leading economies is afoot. In what must rank as one of the cruellest ironies of these times, China, not the US, is honouring the rules-based system by first taking its case to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), while Trump threw tariff bombs on TruthSocial.

The jury is out on the immediate and long-term damage caused by this trade war. It did not leave any winners the first time Britain used it in the 19th century, when it enacted the protectionistCorn Laws, or when OPEC used it in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War. America First is a long winter in America Alone. The damage to the US and the rest of the world will linger long after the Trump years.

Dagger in Africa’s back

Africa is not spared in the all-out war. The continenti s perplexed that USAID, one of the longest-standing tools of US soft power, is folding in the chaos of America First. The independent US government agency created by Congress 64 years ago to deepen the strategic partnership between America and Africa on issues ranging from security to health and the environment is closed for now, not by an Act of Congress, but by a Trump fiat.

No one is precisely sure what his official auctioneer, Elon Musk, plans to do with USAID or what will replaceit. What is certain is that this bridge is broken.

Countries like Nigeria received $1.02 billion in 2023, Ethiopia $1.7 billion the same year, and Kenya $512 million in 2024.Others, including Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, and South Africa, also received various sums to fund their food security, humanitarian, and health programmes. USAID was neither perfect nor America’s Hail Mary for Africa. It was, by and large, a mutually beneficial programme. But Africa must now look elsewhere, or better inwards.

In addition, it’s unlikely that a tariff-obsessed Trump would renew the expiring African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which opens the US to duty-free access to over 6,000 products from the continent.

Elsewhere, the war may be about human caravans, fentanyl, or pirated chips. In Africa, whose immigrants in the US face deportation in large numbers, it’s about all of these and more. It is about losing friendship with a country that was once an inspiration and, more often than not, a moral force for good.

Pyrrhic victory

The White House may be enjoying a victory lap, but chaos was not the only way for Trump to settle his grouse or to save America from the world. For example, under President Joe Biden, Mexico deployed 10,000 troops to the US border before, without a threat. For Canada, the price of appointing a fentanyl czar is far less than the long-term damage to US-Canada relations.

We already know how the war against China will end: Beijing will make new friends and spread its influence elsewhere, while Washington will make new enemies.

Africa must accept that America First is more than a slogan under Trump. It is where the unfinished experiments of his first term and the promise of chaos during his last campaign meet the street: America Alone.

I Defeated Cancer, Lost My Husband To Cancer

By Betty Akeredolu-Anyanwu

“I stopped Coca Cola and all such drinks, stopped bread, eba, amala, pounded yam, akpu (fu-fu), no ‘swallow’, since year 2000. Starchy food and sugar fuel growth of cancer.”

My experience with Cancer is a mixed grill of triumph, and later of grief. Having defeated cancer 27 years ago, and just over a year ago on December 26, 2023, I lost my husband, Aketi, to prostrate cancer.

For this conversation, I will tell my story to inform, inspire and empower the public to take action against cancer as an individual or as a community.

To begin with, the major thing that saved me from untimely de@th at the age of 44 was my mindset or belief. I didn’t believe that my cancer was caused by anybody, let alone by spiritual attack. So, I didn’t go to Church or spiritualist. I went to University College (UCH), Ibadan.

My educational status, also, enabled me to figure out that cancer is medical issue, nothing more. I was right! Doctors at UCH handled my case, and if I may add, I presented early at Stage 1 of the disease. No lymph node was affected, I got to know the implication as I began to read voraciously some medical publications on breast cancer such as Cochran publications, etc.

As I read more and attended international conferences, I understood that my longevity, after cancer diagnosis, depended on my lifestyle.

Looking at my children then, and how young they were, I was determined to do everything in my power to live in order to raise them. If stopping drinking coke and other minerals, swallowing eba, pounded yam, amala and akpu (foo-foo) would prolong my life, knowing that starchy food and sugar fuel the growth of cancer, so be it.

That was exactly what I did. I stopped drinking minerals, no swallow, and no bread since 2000! My foods includes the following: veggies, smoothies, green tea, lemon and ginger tea, beans, moimoi, fish, chicken, snail, occasional rice and zobo drink.

Today, I’m proudly a 27-year breast cancer survivor, thriving, and still counting.

Ribadu Now Suffers From Memory ‘Loss’- El Rufai Fires Back At Former Ally

0

The immediate past Governor of Kaduna state has advised the  National Security Adviser, NSA, to examine himself to ensure that his memory is still very intact.

The former governor’s attack against Ribadu, a former Chairman of the EFCC, comes in the wake of recent denial by Ribadu that he described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a corrupt person many years ago.

The NSA’s made the denial after human righst activist and Knao-based politician Najatu Mohammed slammed him for working under a president he once accused of corruption.

Following Najatu’s remark, in a now viral video on You-tube, Ribadu demanded a retraction, failure which they will both meet in the court to clear the air on the matter.

According to Mohammed, the NSA made the accusation while he was EFCC boss under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2007.

Tinubu was the governor of Lagos state at the time.

In his reaction to Ribadu’s rebuttal, El rufai, who served in that administration as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, said the former EFCC boss made the remark at the time, noting that government records will prove him right.

According to him, Ribadu made the accusations against the former Lagos state governor, at one of high level government meetings, adding that the evidence could be found in the records in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF and the Nigerian Senate.

El Rufai: Ribadu suffers from serious amnesia

For Ribadu not to have remembered or denied he called Tinubu corrupt, the former governor said he’s lying and must be suffering from serious amnesia.

El rufai said, “The record of proceedings in the Senate will confirm that Nuhu made those statements, sometime in 2006.

‘’The subsequent Daily Trust report of February 2007, reconfirms the essence of the statements.

“The conclusions of the Federal Executive Council in 2006, which can be subpoenaed from the cabinet secretariat of the SGF’s office contain the allegations.

‘’In that special FEC meeting in which I was a member, Nuhu’s EFCC made similar presentations accusing many sitting officials, sometime in 2006. These council conclusions will further remove all doubts.

“This is for the record and to remind the morally-flexible that at some point in our national life, silence is no longer golden,” a report in the Daily Trust newspaper on Wednesday quoted El-Rufai as saying.

Recall that Elrufai and Ribadu were once allies and very influential in the Obasanjo’s administration between 1999 and 2007.

Dead Body Of Kidnapped Anambra Lawmaker, Justice Azuka  Recovered, Suspects, Arrested

Honourable Justice Azuka

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Finally, the wait has ended. The anxiety too. For, finally, the body of Anambra State Assembly Member, Honourable Justice Azuka has been recovered in a bad state. It was already in decomposed state.

The Honourable Member was abducted on December  24, 2024, as he was heading home for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

At the time of his abduction, Azuka was the representative of Onitsha North Constituency 1 in the Anambra State House of Assembly.

His abduction took place as he was returning home along the Ugwunaobankpa Road,  Inland Town, Onitsha.

He was a chieftain of the Labour Party, LP,  who got back his mandate when a Court sacked the Douglas Egbuna of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had  earlier declared the winner of the 2023 election.

His kidnap was swift, just a few minutes, according to reports. And the kidnappers never made contacts with anybody until his body was recovered. The car he drove at the time of his abduction was recovered on December 26, two days after the tragic

The State Police Command, while not disclosing the circumstances under which his body was recovered, or the arrest of the suspects, confirmed the recovery and said Police Operatives were still at the scene of recovery.

However, an unnamed Security source has been quoted by Saharareporters as saying that those responsible for his abduction and eventual tragic end, have been arrested.

“We have arrested the culprits that kidnapped and killed him. They were arrested very late last (Wednesday) night and they now went and showed the security men where they dumped the corpse.

“It is sad and tragic. What a huge loss. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen. Our condolences and heart-felt sympathy to his family, traditional ruler of Onitsha, Obi of Onitsha, Dr Alfred Achebe and the entire people of Onitsha North Constituency 1.

“This highlights the ongoing security issues in Anambra State, where a sitting lawmaker was abducted in the heart of Onitsha.

“Two nights ago, on Tuesday, kidnappers had a field day along Awka Road in the centre of Onitsha, firing several gunshots during an attempted abduction.”

Incidentally, Azuka’s body was recovered a couple of days after Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono-Itam was removed from office and replaced. Under him, the security situation in Anambra State descended to the pit of hell.
