Ondo Govt, Police, Fault Casualty Figure In Attack On Four Communities

While the four communities ravaged by suspected Herdsmen in Ondo State are counting their loses, the State Government and Police Command are insisting that the incidents were blown out of proportion.

The affected communities are Aba Alajido, Aba Sunday, Aba Pastor and Ademekun Communities all in Akure North local government.

Report reveal that the suspected herdsmen have been attacking different communities and killing farmers unchallenged by security agents.

In their narrations, the communities stated that the attacks started on Friday night when everyone was asleep. “They opened fire at everyone at sight. So many ran to the bush for safety while some unlucky ones were killed at the villages . I am sure that over 40 people have been killed while many  sustained injuries.

“On Sunday, the security men came around and recovered some of the the corpses. Many are still not found, if they search further they will still find more dead bodies in the bush.”

The Regent of one of the affected communities, Ademekun Village, Princess Adelowo Adekemisola, revealed that more than 14 farmers lost their lives as the herdsmen infiltrated the areas and started shooting sporadically.

The Regent, when narrating her experience before the Ondo State Government representatives at a town hall meeting with cocoa farmers in Akure on Monday said that her community had been battling with the herdsmen problem without security actions.

But the State Government, apparently, while trying to downplay the incidents, insisted that report of Herdsmen attack in Ondo is False.

A statement signed by Senior Special Assistant to Ondo State Governor on Security Matters, Olugbenga Atiba, stated: “Our attention has been drawn to a malicious report being circulated by some section of the online media that armed herdsmen attacked communities in Ondo state and killed some farmers.

“We want to state categorically that this report is not only an absolute falsehood but an attempt by the sponsors of the fake news to create panic among the residents of the state.

“For the umpteenth time, we advise the purveyors of this hoax to desist from such an act that is capable of creating chaos, disunity and distrust between the people and the government.

“It is public knowledge that the government of Ondo state, efficiently-led by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, prioritizes the security of lives and property of every resident of the state where they live, work and play.

“We, therefore, enjoin our people in the state to continue to go about their lawful businesses without fear, as the state government has created a peaceful and safe ambience for all and sundry.”

The State Command of the Nigeria Police, which is still battling with inadequate equipment, which has hindered performance, in its update on the incident said:

“The attention of the command has been drawn to a misleading report claiming that the police confirmed attacks on four communities in Ondo State and that twenty (20) farmers were killed

“For the record, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ala received information regarding an attack at Sunday Camp, a settlement along the boundary of Ondo and Edo States, on March 8, 2025.

“However, the Police Command never confirmed the killing of 20 farmers, as falsely reported.

“The Command is aware of the attack on Sunday Camp  and the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi psc+, mnips, has directed that the ongoing covert operation being carried out across the state to rid the command of bad elements be intensified.

“The Command urges Journalists and Media outlets to verify information from official source before publication to prevent misinformation and unnecessary panic in the State.”

Diphtheria Outbreak: LASG Activates Emergency Response Protocols As Two Students Die

The Diphtheria Outbreak which hit Kings College, Victoria Island Annexe, in Lagos has resulted in the death of two students. 14 others are hospitalized.

Following this development, the Lagos State Government has activated an Emergency Response Protocol.

The Diphtheria outbreak was first identified on February 22, when a 12-year-old student exhibited its symptoms, including a sore throat and fever, and was quickly referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH.

Despite aggressive treatment, including the administration of Diphtheria antitoxin and antibiotics, the student’s condition worsened, leading to myocarditis, a severe complication of diphtheria that affects the heart.

Sadly, the student died on March 6, after a two-week battle with the disease.

In response to the situation, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi said the Lagos Emergency Operations Committee launched an immediate investigation, tracing 34 individuals who had close contact with the student.

According to him “Alarmingly, 14 of these contacts began showing symptoms consistent with diphtheria. These individuals were promptly admitted to LUTH’s Children’s Emergency Unit, where medical staff worked swiftly to assess their condition.

“Of the 14, 12 were confirmed to have early-stage diphtheria and received intensive treatment, including antibiotics and diphtheria antitoxin therapy.

“Upon further inspection of the school’s boarding facilities, health authorities identified critical gaps in infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols.”

While the outbreak has raised significant concerns, Prof. Abayomi noted that the situation is under control.

“Early detection and prompt treatment are key to saving lives”.

Abayomi further noted that a Preliminary Inspection of King’s College Annex by health officials uncovered areas where Infection Prevention and Control, IPC, measures need to be improved and that process will commence immediately.

The State Government, in collaboration with Federal Health Agencies, are set to launch a targeted vaccination campaign for all consenting students of the school (both the annexe on Victoria Island and the Main School in Igbosere), inclusive of all healthcare providers, to strengthen immunity against the deadly infection. This may likely expand statewide.

To ensure widespread public awareness, information leaflets detailing diphtheria symptoms, prevention, and early treatment options are being disseminated across all healthcare facilities in Lagos.

The State Government is also preparing a public health announcement to sensitize Lagosians about the outbreak, warning them to watch out for symptoms, such as sore throat, fever, difficulty in breathing, and swollen neck glands.

Health authorities, including World Health Organization, WHO,  Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, and National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, have been notified of the outbreak and are collaborating with Lagos State to coordinate an effective response.

Lagos has close to 500,000 doses of Diphtheria vaccines in stock, which will be strategically deployed as part of the emergency response to high risk locations.

The State Emergency Operations Centre, EOC, will convene daily to assess the evolving situation and guide policy decisions.

Subsequent meetings will involve the Ministry of Basic and Tertiary Education as well as other stakeholders to enhance inter-sectoral coordination in tackling the outbreak.

Abayomi advised Lagos residents to prioritize good hygiene, avoid crowded environments, and seek medical attention immediately if experiencing diphtheria-like symptoms.

“Early detection and treatment can save lives. Let’s all work together to curb this outbreak and protect our communities,” he said.

The Honourable Commissioner of Health would like to assure Lagosians that “the outbreak is under control and there is no need to panic because measures will continue in earnest of to protect our citizens from infectious disease outbreaks”.

Diphtheria is an infection of the throat caused by a bacteria that results in inflammation of the throat, fever, swollen neck glands and difficulty in breathing. In addition, a toxin produced by the bacteria can cause failure of multiple organs, such as heart, lungs and nerves.

It is preventable by adhering to the full vaccination schedule, good hygiene, avoidance of crowded under-ventilated spaces and prompt treatment of infection with antibiotics and anti toxoid serum to neutralize the effect of the toxin on organs.

2027: Odumeje’s Presidential Bid Unveiled; Says Tinubu, Other Presidential Hopefuls Are ‘Old Cargoes’

Controversial Anambra-based Pastor, Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, popular as Odumeje, has joined the 2027 Presidential Race more than two years into the election, even as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has yet to direct politicians and political parties to commence their campaign.

Odumeje known for his acrobatic gesture, said he entered the race because the incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other potential aspirants have become ‘old cargoes’ and are no longer appropriate for the current digital age.

He announced his intention to run for the country’s highest office during a sermon at the weekend, but failed to disclose the political party under which he plans to contest.

He said, “Both past and present leaders have failed to move Nigeria forward due to their age and lack of vision. The country needs a vibrant, resilient, and forward-thinking leader like me to usher in real progress.

“We need a young leader in this country, and I think I am coming out. We need a young leader as a president, a digital leader, not old cargoes. Am I sure you hear me? I think I will come out, I will come out for president.”

He asked his congregation, “Are you ready for me? Odumeje for president? Are you ready for me? Because I know what you need. I know what you want. I want to construct a main road called Citadel for you. I want to give you a modern life, a digital life.”

Not a few Nigerians and others who have reacted to his comment described the Anambra born cleric turned singer as a joke considering his inexperience in politics, saying he’s better as a jester.

Osun: ICPC Summons Fmr Gov Oyetola’s Commissioner

The petition by Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, to antigraft agencies alleging some financial infractions against the immediate past administration of Gboyega Oyetola is yeilding result as a Commissioner who served in the administration has been invited by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, (ICPC).

ICPC summoned the former Osun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Adebayo Adeleke, for questioning in connection with ongoing investigations into the renovation of Primary Healthcare Centres in the state.

A media Aide to the former Commissioner, Kazeem Mohammed, confirmed that Adeleke received the invitation letter from ICPC officials on Monday.

According to him, the officials approached Adeleke as he was leaving the premises of a radio station in Osogbo, the State capital.

“He has been invited. Some ICPC officials brought the letter to him when he was about to leave the premises of a radio station in Osogbo this evening. He received the letter and promised to honour it at a later date.”

He further clarified that Adeleke was not arrested, contrary to reports circulating on social media, and described the conduct of the ICPC officials as “very civil.”

“Prince Adeleke even spoke about the invite by the ICPC during a radio programme today (Monday). So, no cause for alarm.”

The Osun State Government had earlier petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling for an investigation into the renovation of Primary Healthcare Centres executed during the administration of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.

The petition named several members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Adeleke, whose companies were allegedly awarded renovation contracts.

In response to the allegations, Adeleke maintained that he had resigned from the company linked to the contracts long before the projects commenced.

He further alleged that the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke was targeting him for exposing certain infractions committed under its Government.

NELFUND Appeals To Female Tertiary Students To Apply For Loan

0
NELFUND

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, has challenged female university students to take advantage of the initiative like their make counterparts.

The Fund said the attitude of female students in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions towards the loan has not been very encouraging like their male counterparts.

Akintunde Sawyer, the managing director of NELFUND made this known in Abuja, the nation’s capital, where he was represented by Oluwatosin Sanusi, NELFUND’s Head of Investments and Funds Management.

According to him, NELLFUND was established by the Tinubu administration to provide interest free loans to students of Nigeria’s ivory towers such as Federal and state universities and government owned polytechnics, which the students are expected to pay back after graduation and the gaining employment,

The magazine reports that President Tinubu signed the enabling NELFUND law last year to help Nigerians who want to pursue higher education in public owned institutions but lack the fund to do so.

Checks indicate that many students in these institutions have taken advantage of the initiative with over N110 billion disbursed already, according to Sawyer.

Unfortunately, female students have so far denied themselves the opportunity, the Fund said on Monday during an event to celebrate the International Women’s Day.

Sawyer said the agency is already working with women organizations in the country to change the tide, by encouraging university girls to apply like their male counterparts.

Sawyer: “The NELFUND initiative is all about providing loans for students in tertiary institutions to pay for their fees and to take care of their welfare.

“There is also another part of the initiative which is the skill acquisition.

“It is underway, and it would also cover educational fees and fund purchases of equipment for entrepreneurship training.

“The skills acquisition programme places students on a monthly stipend, which is laudable; however, we have fewer women who are taking advantage of this initiative.

“Currently, we have a ratio of 4 to 1, which means for every four male applicants, we have just one female, which isn’t impressive.”

On April 19, 2024 President Bola Tinubu signed the amended version of NELFUND bill into law, promising that the students loan scheme will thrive on fairness and equity and promote inclusiveness among tertiary institution students.

When Ondo Residents Can No Longer Sleep With Eyes Close

By Ayodele Oni

Security Operations are at their lowest ebb. Operatives seem helpless because the things they need to work with are not there. Vehicles are broken down and funds are scarce.

Once upon a time, residents of Ondo, the Sunshine State, could go to bed with their two eyes closed. This was because of the effective and efficient security which network prevailed in the State at that period. The Police, Army and the South West security network, Amotekun, all collaborated to give criminals sleepless nights and succeeded in driving them out of the State.

But that was then. Things have gone awry now to the extent that armed Herdsmen, in one fell swoop,  attacked four communities at a stretch without checking, killing and maiming innocent residents. The question everybody is asking is: where are those security agencies, especially Amotekun Corps that were a thorn in the flesh of the herders?

Before, no week would pass- by without a breakthrough of either arrest of kidnappers or herders destroying farms. All these seem to be a thing of the past.

The Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr Wilfred Afolabi, who resumed duties in the State a few months ago, tried to shed light on problems which may likely have crippled security in the State.

The police Commissioner mentioned some of the challenges of the command in carrying out its duties in terms of patrol vehicles and other logistics needed for smooth operations.

According to him,  if the command is equipped with hi-tech devices, including drone, trackers and other devices for lawful interception, fighting crimes in the State would be done seamlessly.

Afolabi revealed that the Command needs assistance from government and other stakeholders in the State in terms of provision of patrol vans and the repair of grounded patrol vehicles for timely and effective response to distress calls.

“We can’t use orthodox method to address present security challenges. Most of our vehicles are grounded. The refurbishing are ongoing through the financial assistance from the people.

“We need Military drone that can go 50km, live tracking devices to get the location where criminals are hiding, Lawful Intersection (LI), fueling of vehicles among others.

“Now, kidnapping has gone highly sophisticated and you can confirm it from anybody. We can’t use the same old method, or maybe the approach of the 70s or the 80s or even the 90s to address this present security challenges.

“In a lot of States where they are having successes and breakthroughs, they have hi-tech machines, drones, Lawful Intersection machine (LI), life tracking, but here, we don’t have them.

“So, most times, what we rely on whenever there is any incident of kidnapping, you deploy your men into the bush, to comb the bush. That is archaic and you hardly can achieve much success.”

Besides, the CP noted that consistent migration into Ondo State among other factors contribute to the prevailing situation of criminality in the State.

“There are lot of people migrating, relocating to the Southern part of the country and they are coming in hundreds and thousands, and there is no directive coming from anywhere that this movement should be checked.

“So, there is no doubt about it that the rate at which people are migrating, relocating into Ondo State is further worsening the prevailing security challenges we have.”

The attacks on the four communities are  not the only sore point in the ongoing criminal activities in the State. The recently released youth leader of Afenifere was abducted in the Akoko area of the State. A convoy of the Leadership of the National Association of the Nigerian Students, (NANS), was attacked in the State on their way to Abuja. These are just few to mention.

Everyday in the Akoko area of the State, which is the most volatile and abode of criminal elements, travelers are abducted both day and night as a result of the absence of security personnel.

The State Commander of Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, whose tenure was extended towards the end of last year has been inactive, apparently for similar reasons adduced by the Police Commissioner.

Inside sources disclose that Amotekun operation is hampered by inadequate personnel, lack of functional vehicles and funds, unlike during the immediate past administration when the job was made easy for them by late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, whose efforts and commitment led to the formation of Amotekun.

Operational vehicles are grounded within the premises of the security outfit in Akure, while some of the officials attacked in the course of their official duties are battling for survival, using personal money to take care of themselves.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatuwa is being accused of non- release of funds like his predecessor to the security agencies in the State. His Aide on security matters, Olugbenga Atiba, in his reaction to the herdsmen invasion of four communities believes that enemies of the administration are behind the report.

Atiba stated that “It is public knowledge that the Government of Ondo State, efficiently led by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, prioritizes the security of lives and property of every resident of the State where they live, work and play.” That’s his belief. Those that have been killed or sent out of their homes cannot agree with him.

From the way insecurity is rising in the state, the people may be forced to resort to defending themselves or worse still relocate to more peaceful States within the neighbourhood.

FG To Fast-track Disbursement Of CVFF- Edun

0
Wale Edun - Minister of Finance

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to the disbursement of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund, CVFF.

Edun made the remark when the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, led a delegation from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA to meet with the Minister.

He stressed that the CVFF disbursement remains a priority, as it is expected to have a positive ripple effect on the economy, drive growth, create employment opportunities, and strengthen Nigeria’s position as a major maritime hub in Africa.

The NIMASA DG on his part, stated that the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has identified the CVFF disbursement as a key performance indicator, KPI, for 2025.

“The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON directed us to engage with the Minister of Finance to resolve all technicalities and establish modalities to fast-track the disbursement of the CVFF to beneficiaries. This administration is committed to unlocking the sector’s full potential,” Mobereola said.

He further noted that the funds have been domiciled with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, since the implementation of the Treasury Single Account, TSA. As part of efforts to accelerate the process, the Minister of Finance has approved the inclusion of a representative from the Ministry in NIMASA’s in-house committee on CVFF disbursement, under the supervision of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

The Finance Minister also stressed the importance of regular updates and transparency in the utilization of the fund, ensuring that contributors and key stakeholders benefit efficiently while positioning Nigeria’s maritime industry for sustainable growth.

Tinubu To Govs: Do More For Nigerians

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
President Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has called on political leaders in the country to channel more resources and policies toward catering to the needs of the poor and vulnerable.

The President, made the remark in Abuja on Monday when he hosted governors, members of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, Service Chiefs, and some selected Heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, MDAs, to break the Ramadan fast at the State House, urging the leaders to be selfless and work in the interest of Nigerians.

“I thank you all for responding to this invitation. You honoured it out of respect, not because you don’t have enough to eat or share”, President Tinubu said.
Tinubu noted that political leaders’ efforts are crucial in meeting citizens’ expectations. He commended the people-oriented policies that have started yielding positive results in improved human development indexes and economic indicators.

He attributed the success of economic reforms to the collective effort of members of the FEC and the collaboration of leaders at the subnational levels.

“I recall in our first FEC meeting, I said we were going to work hard to fetch water from a dry well. We are still working hard to ensure that there is water to drink and that we spend money, not the people.

“You, the leaders at the subnational levels, are also doing all you can to spend money, not the people,” he noted.

President Tinubu urged political leaders to work for posterity so that history will remember them for good.

“Look at yourselves as navigators that will bring the country to the promised land. Standing here as President is a great honour, and you can’t trade it.

“Continue doing what you are doing. And do more for the people,” he added.

Tinubu said leaders must see the entire country as one big family in a house where people live in different rooms.

Presidency To El-Rufai: “Your Inordinate Ambition Doomed To Fail”

“Tinubu owns SDP” – Joe Igbokwe

The Presidency has reacted to the defection of the immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the Social Democratic Party, SDP.

El-Rufai, a foundation member of the APC, after he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, a party under which he was the Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, helped, in no small measure, to actualize the Presidency of President Bola Tinubu.

But a couple of months after Tinubu came on  board, El-Rufai was dumped, literally, to the extent that he was   not cleared by the Senate for a Ministerial position, an assurance he had from Tinubu. El-Rufai said Tinubu had assured him he would be the Minister for Power, and holds Tinubu responsible for his humiliation at the Senate.

Since then, the relationship between him, Tinubu and APC had continued to deteriorate. He became a strong critic of both Tinubu and the APC. He fell out with Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser, and a former bosom friend of his. He also fell out with his State Governor and successor, Uba Sani, whose Principal he was. He accused them of betrayal. And embarked on a mobilization of forces to ease Tinubu out of office in 2027.

On Monday, March 10, everything came to a hilt when El-Rufai dumped the APC for the Social Democratic Party, SDP.

In response to El-Rufai’s defection, the Presidency said his alliance with those opposed to President Tinubu is neither based on ideology or progressivism. Instead, the Presidency said through Daniel Bwala, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, it is based on El-Rufai’s inordinate ambition.

Bwala also told El-Rufai that he has embarked on a bad business because he is associating with sore losers doomed to fail.

Said Bwala in a post on his X handle: “Senior,@elrufai, I read the news today that you have resigned from APC to join SDP. While you have the right to do so, we will soon examine your motive and remind Nigerians that your decision did not come out of nowhere. Associating with sore losers to unseat the President is not an ideology or progressivism – it is simply an ambition doomed to fail”.

For the records, Joe Igbokwe, an APC chieftain, has

indirectly told El-Rufai that defecting to SDP was a big mistake.

According to Igbokwe, “Tinubu owns SDP.”
