“The IGP emphasized that this policy is aligned with international human rights standards, which prioritize the protection and preservation of the dignity and rights of individuals throughout the judicial process.

House Of Reps Urges CBN To Suspend ATM Charges

ATM Machines

By Akinwale Kasali

The House of Representatives has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to suspend the implementation of the increment in Automated Teller Machine transaction charges with immediate effect.

The Lawmakers said the decision should be rescinded putting into consideration the economic situation in the country.

The decision of the House was sequel to the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the member representing Esan Central /Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency, Edo State, Marcus Onobun, during Tuesday’s plenary.

Onobun, while addressing  his colleagues noted that the Apex Bank through a recent circular, prescribed an increase in ATM withdrawal charges and a discontinuation of the free ATM withdrawals for customers using other banks’ ATMs, thereby imposing additional financial burdens on Nigerians.

The new policy will allow customers withdrawing from their bank’s ATMs to continue to enjoy free withdrawals, while a fee of N100 will be applied to N20,000 withdrawals for customers from other banks transacting from ATMs within the bank premises.

Similarly, customers from other banks transacting from ATMs outside the premises of the bank such as malls, marketplaces, and other public places will be charged N100 and an additional surcharge of N500.

This development has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians who bemoan the financial burden meted on Nigerians, coupled with pathetic state of the nation’s economy.

However, Onobun, a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Lawmaker, said that Nigerians “Are already grappling with multiple economic hardships, including high inflation, increased fuel prices, electricity tariff hike, and numerous banking and service charges that significantly reduce disposable income and negatively impact their welfare.”

He added: “We are worried that the imposition of additional ATM withdrawal charges will further limit the financial inclusion of Nigerians by discouraging low-income earners from accessing banking services, thereby contradicting the CBN’s financial inclusion agenda.

“The banking sector has continued to record significant profits, imposing further charges on consumers without corresponding improvements in service delivery or infrastructure is unjustifiable.”

The Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas,  who presided over the plenary session put the motion to voice vote and it was overwhelmingly supported by the lawmakers, prompting the House to urge CBN to immediately suspend the implementation of the policy, pending proper engagement with the relevant Committees on Banking, Finance, and Financial Institutions.

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has reaffirmed its commitment towards safeguarding the country from the unwholesome activities of smugglers and other criminal elements.

The Comptroller of the Tin Can Island Port Command, Frank Onyeka, made this known on Monday March 10, 2025, while officially handing over seized, illicit drugs worth over N8billion to the authorities of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA at the port premises in Lagos.

At the handing over ceremony held at the Enforcement Unit of the Command ,Comptroller Onyeka informed that the drugs were intercepted due to the high level of credible intelligence gathered by personnel of the Service ,in collaboration with the men of the NDLEA .

A statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson OE Ivara SC, noted that the seized drugs were laden in two 20 feet containers which were intercepted in different batches .

The containers were falsely declared to be having used vehicles and auto spare parts originating from Canada, the NCS statement indicated.

He reiterated the Command’s commitment towards facilitating trade while at the same time remaining vigilant against activities that threaten national security and public health.

Comptroller Onyeka reassured that the Command will continue to enhance operational strategies including intelligence gathering and inter-agency collaboration for effective combating of smuggling and other criminal activities.

Again, PDP’s Ajayi Loses As Supreme Court Seals Gov. Aiyedatiwa, Deputy’s Election Victory

Slams appellants with millions of Naira in fines

The Supreme Court on Tuesday, dismissed the petition filed by the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in last year’s Governorship election in Ondo state, Agboola Ajayi challenging victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his deputy, Olayide Adelami.

In the case number SC/CV/106/2025—Agboola Ajayi & Anor v. Olayide Owolabi Adelami & Ors, the Apex court also awarded Two  million Naira in favour of each respondent against the appellants.

In the judgment, the apex court rejected the legal challenge filed by former Ondo State Deputy Governor and PDP governorship candidate in the November 16, 2024 election, Chief Agboola Alfred Ajayi.

The Supreme Court ruled that the appellants lacked the legal standing to pursue the case, rendering the appeal unsustainable.

Additionally, the court affirmed that the suit was statute-barred, upholding the decisions of the lower courts.

It emphasized that the cause of action arose on May 20, 2024, when the nomination forms were submitted to INEC, whereas the appellants filed their suit at the Federal High Court on June 7, 2024—beyond the 14-day limit prescribed by law.

Consequently, the appeal was dismissed, and Ajayi was ordered to pay ₦2 million in costs to each of the four respondents.

Ajayi had sought to nullify the election of Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Owolabi Adelami over alleged discrepancies in his name change.

He also challenged the legitimacy of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the case.

His argument centered on the claim that Adelami, who previously had “Jackson” as his middle name in secondary school, changed it to “Owolabi” without proper documentation.

However, the Supreme Court found no legal basis for disqualifying the deputy governor on these grounds, stating that properly documented name changes do not constitute electoral fraud or grounds for disqualification.

Having resolved the jurisdictional issues against the appellants, the court held that its findings were sufficient to dismiss the appeal. Accordingly, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the appeal lacked merit and dismissed it in its entirety.

Bode George To Tinubu: “Nigeria Becoming An Embarrassment, Darkness Looms

Bode George and Bola Tinubu

By Gideon Njoku

“How does anybody justify what is happening in Rivers, Osun and Lagos States?” – George*

In a letter to President Bola Tinubu, Chief Bode George, a retired Naval Commodore, and a Peoples Democratic Party’s chieftain, warned that darkness looms in Nigeria.

Chief George, you would recall had sworn in the months running to the 2023 Presidential Election that he would embark on self-exile, if Tinubu, then candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, wins the election.

Tinubu won, and was sworn in since May 29, 2023, but George is still in Nigeria. When asked why, he said the President sent a delegation to appeal to him.

However, the elder statesman has been keeping himself busy by keeping the Government on its toes. He is acting as a class monitor in both the PDP and Tinubu’s administration. He raises alarm often and alerts on what he thinks could be the consequences.

In his latest outing, Chief George, in a letter to President Tinubu, pointed out dangerous areas including the political crisis in Rivers, Lagos, and what he sees as a deliberate stoking of fire in Osun State over a Local Council Election in which he noted the State Government was right.

His summation: There is fire on the mountain; darkness looms; Nigeria is becoming an embarrassment; President Tinubu cannot be an Emperor Nero. He needs to sit up and apply the brakes before it is too late.

In the open letter titled: “From Osun to Lagos and Rivers: Darkness Looms”, George lamented “that Nigeria is becoming an embarrassment in the comity of nations due to some actions which defy logic.” Using the crisis over the LG Election in Osun State, the Lagos House of Assembly power show, and the political scandal going on in Rivers State as pointers to how disgracefully Nigeria has descended, he lamented:

“We now have a situation in which some people interpret the law to suit their selfish interests. What happened in Osun is a straightforward case, but government officials at the federal level complicated the situation with unnecessary interpretation of the law.

“In Nigeria, the law is being turned upside down, and this is dangerous to our democracy. Why are people so desperate? What exactly is the issue? Can’t we do something with decorum?

“Some of us are worried because we lived through what happened in the First Republic, which started in 1962, and what happened in the Second Republic which started in 1983. Tinubu should not allow a reenactment of the collapse of these Republics.

“Look at what is happening in the Lagos State House of Assembly. It is absolute lunacy. Thirty six out of 40 members impeached Mudashiru Obasa and since then, we have witnessed this embarrassing show of shame.

“To say the return of Obasa as Speaker on Monday is shocking is an understatement. It is an international embarrassment and the joke is on the presidency.

“Obasa was impeached on January 13 and since then, agents of darkness turned the Assembly to a theatre of war. What sort of democracy is this? Lawmakers have the powers to choose their leaders but since they took that decision, it has been one crisis after the other, fuelled by extraneous forces. Why should Nigeria and Nigerians be embarrassed like this globally? What is our offence?

“Why should this embarrassing and disgraceful behaviour be allowed by the powers that be in Abuja? Why should the Centre of Excellence be turned to Centre of Confusion?

“Look at Rivers, the economic lifewire of this country. The whole thing is a total mess. What sort of judgement will subject people to misery, extreme pain, wretchedness, distress and unhappiness of no federal allocation, no salary, no infrastructure, no food and other essentials of life?

“I am not a lawyer but I see the verdict as disheartening. This can cause problems for the country.

“That judgemènt is not fair to the people of Rivers State.

“I just pray thàt some elèments will not start bursting oil pipelines which may eventuàlly affect the country’s revenue.

‘’The people are hungry and angry. Tinubu and other APC chiefs desperate to capture all states should have a rethink.

“In the country today, we have deficits in areas of democracy and rule of law. That is why everything is upside down. Also, electoral irregularities such as intimidation and vote buying continue to be widespread. These became glaring during the Edo and Ondo governorship elections in September and November, 2024 when vote buying was done in the open. The security situation has also deteriorated.Youth Corps members, serving their fatherland, are now being abducted by terrorists. Terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and communal clashes have become the order of the day.

“Instead of the President to tackle these vices, APC members are busy sowing seeds of crises all over the country.

“This is the time to say enough is enough.

“Lagos is the largest electoral state in Nigeria, followed by Kano and Rivers. If we deliberately make two of the three states to be unstable, what does that portend for Nigeria?

“I want to remind all Nigerians, especially those in government, that GOODNESS is an investment that will never fail. Whatever good you do will also have a reward. Where there is love, there is no need for perfection. I wish Nigeria and Nigerians the very best everytime”.

Ahmad Aliyu - Governor of Sokoto State

By Ayodele Oni

Following the death of 26 persons in Kebbi state, Sokoto State government has advised residents to remain alert as suspected meningitis cases rise in some Local Government Areas.

This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by Nura Maikwanci, the Information/Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, on behalf of the  Commissioner for Health, Faruk Wurno.

Maikwanci confirmed that laboratory tests have identified several cases of the disease.

The statement said, “To curb its spread, the Ministry has intensified surveillance, case management, and public health interventions.

“We called on residents to take preventive measures, including seeking immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, severe headache, or neck stiffness.”

It also emphasised the importance of personal and environmental hygiene, avoiding overcrowded places and ensuring proper ventilation in homes and public spaces.

The Commissioner urged residents to report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility and assured the public that the state governor, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has provided essential medications to health centres across the State.

Ondo Govt, Police, Fault Casualty Figure In Attack On Four Communities

Wilfred Afolabi - Ondo CP

By Ayodele Oni

While the four communities ravaged by suspected Herdsmen in Ondo State are counting their loses, the State Government and Police Command are insisting that the incidents were blown out of proportion.

The affected communities are Aba Alajido, Aba Sunday, Aba Pastor and Ademekun Communities all in Akure North local government.

Report reveal that the suspected herdsmen have been attacking different communities and killing farmers unchallenged by security agents.

In their narrations, the communities stated that the attacks started on Friday night when everyone was asleep. “They opened fire at everyone at sight. So many ran to the bush for safety while some unlucky ones were killed at the villages . I am sure that over 40 people have been killed while many  sustained injuries.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa

“On Sunday, the security men came around and recovered some of the the corpses. Many are still not found, if they search further they will still find more dead bodies in the bush.”

The Regent of one of the affected communities, Ademekun Village, Princess Adelowo Adekemisola, revealed that more than 14 farmers lost their lives as the herdsmen infiltrated the areas and started shooting sporadically.

The Regent, when narrating her experience before the Ondo State Government representatives at a town hall meeting with cocoa farmers in Akure on Monday said that her community had been battling with the herdsmen problem without security actions.

But the State Government, apparently, while trying to downplay the incidents, insisted that report of Herdsmen attack in Ondo is False.

A statement signed by Senior Special Assistant to Ondo State Governor on Security Matters, Olugbenga Atiba, stated: “Our attention has been drawn to a malicious report being circulated by some section of the online media that armed herdsmen attacked communities in Ondo state and killed some farmers.

“We want to state categorically that this report is not only an absolute falsehood but an attempt by the sponsors of the fake news to create panic among the residents of the state.

“For the umpteenth time, we advise the purveyors of this hoax to desist from such an act that is capable of creating chaos, disunity and distrust between the people and the government.

“It is public knowledge that the government of Ondo state, efficiently-led by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, prioritizes the security of lives and property of every resident of the state where they live, work and play.

“We, therefore, enjoin our people in the state to continue to go about their lawful businesses without fear, as the state government has created a peaceful and safe ambience for all and sundry.”

The State Command of the Nigeria Police, which is still battling with inadequate equipment, which has hindered performance, in its update on the incident said:

“The attention of the command has been drawn to a misleading report claiming that the police confirmed attacks on four communities in Ondo State and that twenty (20) farmers were killed

“For the record, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ala received information regarding an attack at Sunday Camp, a settlement along the boundary of Ondo and Edo States, on March 8, 2025.

“However, the Police Command never confirmed the killing of 20 farmers, as falsely reported.

“The Command is aware of the attack on Sunday Camp  and the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi psc+, mnips, has directed that the ongoing covert operation being carried out across the state to rid the command of bad elements be intensified.

“The Command urges Journalists and Media outlets to verify information from official source before publication to prevent misinformation and unnecessary panic in the State.”

Diphtheria Outbreak: LASG Activates Emergency Response Protocols As Two Students Die

The Diphtheria Outbreak which hit Kings College, Victoria Island Annexe, in Lagos has resulted in the death of two students. 14 others are hospitalized.

Following this development, the Lagos State Government has activated an Emergency Response Protocol.

The Diphtheria outbreak was first identified on February 22, when a 12-year-old student exhibited its symptoms, including a sore throat and fever, and was quickly referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH.

Despite aggressive treatment, including the administration of Diphtheria antitoxin and antibiotics, the student’s condition worsened, leading to myocarditis, a severe complication of diphtheria that affects the heart.

Sadly, the student died on March 6, after a two-week battle with the disease.

In response to the situation, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi said the Lagos Emergency Operations Committee launched an immediate investigation, tracing 34 individuals who had close contact with the student.

According to him “Alarmingly, 14 of these contacts began showing symptoms consistent with diphtheria. These individuals were promptly admitted to LUTH’s Children’s Emergency Unit, where medical staff worked swiftly to assess their condition.

“Of the 14, 12 were confirmed to have early-stage diphtheria and received intensive treatment, including antibiotics and diphtheria antitoxin therapy.

“Upon further inspection of the school’s boarding facilities, health authorities identified critical gaps in infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols.”

While the outbreak has raised significant concerns, Prof. Abayomi noted that the situation is under control.

“Early detection and prompt treatment are key to saving lives”.

Abayomi further noted that a Preliminary Inspection of King’s College Annex by health officials uncovered areas where Infection Prevention and Control, IPC, measures need to be improved and that process will commence immediately.

The State Government, in collaboration with Federal Health Agencies, are set to launch a targeted vaccination campaign for all consenting students of the school (both the annexe on Victoria Island and the Main School in Igbosere), inclusive of all healthcare providers, to strengthen immunity against the deadly infection. This may likely expand statewide.

To ensure widespread public awareness, information leaflets detailing diphtheria symptoms, prevention, and early treatment options are being disseminated across all healthcare facilities in Lagos.

The State Government is also preparing a public health announcement to sensitize Lagosians about the outbreak, warning them to watch out for symptoms, such as sore throat, fever, difficulty in breathing, and swollen neck glands.

Health authorities, including World Health Organization, WHO,  Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, and National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, have been notified of the outbreak and are collaborating with Lagos State to coordinate an effective response.

Lagos has close to 500,000 doses of Diphtheria vaccines in stock, which will be strategically deployed as part of the emergency response to high risk locations.

The State Emergency Operations Centre, EOC, will convene daily to assess the evolving situation and guide policy decisions.

Subsequent meetings will involve the Ministry of Basic and Tertiary Education as well as other stakeholders to enhance inter-sectoral coordination in tackling the outbreak.

Abayomi advised Lagos residents to prioritize good hygiene, avoid crowded environments, and seek medical attention immediately if experiencing diphtheria-like symptoms.

“Early detection and treatment can save lives. Let’s all work together to curb this outbreak and protect our communities,” he said.

The Honourable Commissioner of Health would like to assure Lagosians that “the outbreak is under control and there is no need to panic because measures will continue in earnest of to protect our citizens from infectious disease outbreaks”.

Diphtheria is an infection of the throat caused by a bacteria that results in inflammation of the throat, fever, swollen neck glands and difficulty in breathing. In addition, a toxin produced by the bacteria can cause failure of multiple organs, such as heart, lungs and nerves.

It is preventable by adhering to the full vaccination schedule, good hygiene, avoidance of crowded under-ventilated spaces and prompt treatment of infection with antibiotics and anti toxoid serum to neutralize the effect of the toxin on organs.

2027: Odumeje’s Presidential Bid Unveiled; Says Tinubu, Other Presidential Hopefuls Are ‘Old Cargoes’

By Akinwale Kasali

Controversial Anambra-based Pastor, Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, popular as Odumeje, has joined the 2027 Presidential Race more than two years into the election, even as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has yet to direct politicians and political parties to commence their campaign.

Odumeje known for his acrobatic gesture, said he entered the race because the incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other potential aspirants have become ‘old cargoes’ and are no longer appropriate for the current digital age.

He announced his intention to run for the country’s highest office during a sermon at the weekend, but failed to disclose the political party under which he plans to contest.

He said, “Both past and present leaders have failed to move Nigeria forward due to their age and lack of vision. The country needs a vibrant, resilient, and forward-thinking leader like me to usher in real progress.

“We need a young leader in this country, and I think I am coming out. We need a young leader as a president, a digital leader, not old cargoes. Am I sure you hear me? I think I will come out, I will come out for president.”

He asked his congregation, “Are you ready for me? Odumeje for president? Are you ready for me? Because I know what you need. I know what you want. I want to construct a main road called Citadel for you. I want to give you a modern life, a digital life.”

Not a few Nigerians and others who have reacted to his comment described the Anambra born cleric turned singer as a joke considering his inexperience in politics, saying he’s better as a jester.
