Supreme Court Judgement: PDP Nat. Ag Chair Rubbishes Nat. Pub. Sec’s Statement

0
Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Rt Hon Ude Okoye

By Ayodele Oni

The People’s  Democratic Party (PDP) seems divided on the Supreme Court judgement which reinstated Samuel Anyanwu as national secretary.

A statement earlier by the spokesman of the party, Debo Ologunagba claimed the National Working Committee, (NWC) of the party welcomed the development.

Ologunagba’s statement added that the judgement was a victory for democracy.

Ologunagba said that the party’s National Working (NWC) received the judgement of the apex court, which affirmed that the issue was that of party leadership positions.

This, according to him, included that of the national secretary, which is entirely an internal affair of the party, requiring only the party’s internal mechanism to which the court has no jurisdiction.

“Today’s judgment of the Supreme Court reaffirms the standing position of the party.

“It emphatically settles the emergence of Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the substantive National Secretary of the PDP, having been duly nominated, endorsed and ratified through the internal mechanism of the PDP statutory organs and bodies,” he said.

This, he said, was in line with provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).

In another statement, signed by

Ibrahim Abdullahi, Deputy National Publicity Secretary, PDP stated that “The NWC hereby distances itself from the calculated falsehood aimed at achieving a predetermined objective, and to however, deceitfully mislead the public and PDP members.

“I am directed by the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Iliya Damagun, to refute a misleading statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Hon Debo Ologunagba shortly after Supreme Court delivered judgement in the case of Samuel Anyanwu Vs. Emmanuel Aniagu on Friday, March 21, 2025.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the statement of Debo Olagunagba does not reflect the position of the PDP and the NWC respectively. The public should please disregard the falsehood.

“It is pertinent to inform the public that at no time did the Supreme Court recognize Hon Udeh Okoye as National Secretary, but only described him as an ‘impostor’ while the appellant, Emmanuel Aniagu as a ‘meddlesome Interloper’ respectively.

“It is worrisome that the National Publicity Secretary has, of late embarked on a frolic of his own by taking extreme and contradictory opinions against the collective resolve of the NWC with a view to undermining its authority

“Members of the public, especially the PDP family, are hereby enjoyed to disregard and discard the publication, which is merely the figment of the NPS’s imagination.

“So far, the National Working Committee of our party cannot disregard or make gist of the judgement of the highest court in the land, as it will continue uphold the decision of the court.”

Outburst by Abure-Led LP Faction Against Nnenadi,  Contrived Attack on Obi?

0
Nenadi and Abure and Peter Obi

At a time when the tide of political permutations is graciously drifting in favour of Peter Obi, their own, the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party appears to want to play the disgruntled spoiler.

On March 10th, talks around a possible opposition coalition gained a tangible leap. El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna state and APC heavyweight stalwart, dumped his party for the Social Democrat Party (SDP). His move pulled a measure of clout that frenzied the talks around the opposition coalition and the SDP as the vehicle.

In welcoming El-Rufai into the fold, Shehu Gabam, the National Chairman of the SDP, invited the leaders of other opposition parties. He sought the company of Nenadi Usman and her team mainly because they share longstanding amity, as Nenadi confirmed in her tweet.

The Abure-led faction, possibly piqued by the snub of participating in the event, staged irksome theatrics to mark a new chapter in the almost-becoming chronic Labour Party crisis.

They published a direct dark attack on Nenadi Usman, who heads the LP Transitional Committee that Peter Obi, Governor Alex Otti, and the other LP leaders set up to manage the party’s affairs, for honouring the SDP Chairman’s invitation.

On the surface, the harshly worded statement impresses as a decent cant intended to legitimately rebuke Nenadi Usman, whom they tagged as a straying offender. But in the depth of truth, it manifests as a harsh shenanigan of hateful sadists who appear to be contracted to spoil Peter Obi’s political providence.

A snippet of the statement called Nenadi Usman an “unregistered member of the party.” In another part, they referred to Nenadi’s honouring the SDP chairman’s invite as “a shameful but audacious display.”

More so, the statement labelled Nenadi’s Transitional Committee “illegal and ill-conceived,” which is assumed to be a timely intervention by Peter Obi and co in the heat of a crippling crisis in the party. It also made overtures that dismissed hopes that the LP might join the coalition, at least not the Abure-led faction.

A good guess is that the statement boldly attempted to ruffle Peter Obi’s surging reputation and derail opposition voices, calling for a coalition and quickly coalescing into a potent political force that looked to benefit him.

Peter Obi’s political reputation has rather surged in dimensions too unusual and unrivalled since after the 2023 Presidential election, which he lost in a disturbingly controversial manner.

His stubbornly soaring political clout, the potential of his ever-increasing and tireless army of supporters (the Obidients), and other pivotal permutations position him as the favourite to fly the flag of the opposition coalition.

Governor Bwala Mohammed of Bauchi state confirmed the opposition’s impressions of Peter Obi when he called him the “leader of the opposition” and vowed to be ready to work with Obi. El-Rufai himself has alluded to this prime status that Obi wields in the opposition fold.

A genuinely serious political party blessed with Peter Obi as its very loyal member would lead the charge for the profiting calls for an opposition coalition, particularly considering it lost the 2023 presidential election by a nose and will need a reinforced party to face a crude politician like Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

That the Abure-led faction of the LP is defiantly fighting against such providence stirs upsetting suspicions. Since the 2023 elections tribunal ended, they have taken actions that antagonize and seemingly target Obi’s political ambitions.

Abure’s insistence not to vacate office, even after it had long expired, the rushed party convention he and his cohorts conducted in Anambra that excites as comical mischief, and his rush to obtain a very disputed court judgement to affirm his illegality confirm the belief that he may have chosen a fight against Peter Obi.

Why are Abure and his gang intent on niggling Peter Obi, their so-called party’s apparent greatest asset that has brought the party matchless goodwill since its formation in 2002, and why are they taking actions that portend a sinister end for his popular mandate?

National Secretary: PDP Commends Apex Court for Reaffirming Party Supremacy, Insists Anyanwu Is Gone

0
Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Rt Hon Ude Okoye

By Adesina Soyooye

The National Working Committee, NWC, has applauded the Supreme Court for its Friday ruling in the tussle as to who really is the Party’s National Secretary between Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Hon. Udeh-Okoye.

The PDP has been embroiled in a legal tussle over the office. Anyanwu, the elected National Secretary of the Party ran into trouble when he came back to reclaim the office he vacated when he embarked on his ill-fated contest for the Governorship seat of Imo State. Anyanwu was roundly trounced by the incumbent Senator Hope Uzodimma.

In Anyanwu’s absence, the Party chose Udeh-Okoye to hold fort. On his return return, a lot of water had already passed under the bridge. The NWC and the South-east Zone, as well as the PDP Governors’ Forum, insisted on the continuation of Udeh-Okoye as Secretary.

Anyanwu proceeded to Court which continued to the Supreme Court. On Friday, March 21, 2025, the Apex Court ruled that it does not interfere in the internal affairs of Political Parties and asked the PDP to sort its problems out relying on its constitution.

This ruling has not solved the problem as Anyanwu is claiming victory, hinging his claim on the Party’s Constitution. However, in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Party,  Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the Party hailed the Supreme Court for affirming Party supremacy.

The meaning:  It is now the job of the Party to either ask Anyanwu to continue, or sack him, as they already did, for Udeh-Okoye. The bottom line however, is: What does the PDP Constitution say?

Following is PDP’s reaction to the Apex Court’s ruling as signed by Olugunagba.

“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) @OfficialPDPNig has received the Judgment of the Supreme Court which affirmed that the issue of Party leadership positions, including that of the National Secretary is entirely an internal affair of the Party requiring only the Party internal mechanism to which the courts have no jurisdiction.

“Today’s judgment of the Supreme Court reaffirms the standing position of the Party and emphatically settles the emergence of Rt. Hon. SKE Udeh Okoye as the substantiative National Secretary of the PDP having been duly nominated, endorsed and ratified through the internal mechanism of the PDP statutory Organs and bodies in line with provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).

“For clarity, the NWC at its 576th meeting held on the 11th of October, 2023, directed the South East Zonal Executive Committee to nominate a replacement for Senator Samuel Anyanwu upon Senator Anyanwu’s nomination as the governorship candidate of the PDP to contest the November 2023 Governorship election in Imo State.

“Consequent upon the directive of the NWC, the South East Zonal Executive Committee at its meeting held on the 20th of October 2023 passed a resolution approving the emergence and forwarding of the name of Rt. Hon. SKE Udeh Okoye to the NWC as the National Secretary of the Party.

“Accordingly, the NWC at its 577th meeting held on 7th of November 2023 pursuant to its powers under the PDP Constitution, duly received, deliberated upon, accepted and approved the emergence of Rt. Hon. SKE Udeh Okoye as the National Secretary of the Party, which appointment has also since been endorsed by relevant Organs and bodies of the PDP including the Board of Trustees (BoT), South East Zonal Caucus, the PDP Governors’ Forum and officially communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the general public.

“The PDP commends the Supreme Court for upholding the principle of the supremacy of the Party in the management of its internal affairs, describing it as victory for democracy.

“The NWC urges all patriotic members of the PDP to remain united as we work together to move our great Party forward.”

A brace from Victor Osimhen was all the Super Eagles needed to record an away victory against the Amavubis of Rwanda in Kigali, in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World  Cup Qualifiers.

The Super Eagles, who are condemned to win all their remaining six matches having played three draws and lost one without a win, proved their mettle as no pushover with the crucial win.

New Super Eagles Coach, Eric Chelle, recorded his first victory by starting the encounter with Stanley Nwabali in goal, and William Troost Ekong, Samuel Osayi, Calvin Bassey and Ola Aina in the heart of the defense; with Wilfried Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze with Osimhen leading the attack.

Osimhen gave the Super Eagles the lead in the 11th minute and doubled it in the 43th minute of the pulsating encounter.

With the victory, Nigeria has six points from five games and will face the Warriors of Zimbabwe at the Godswill Obot Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State next week Tuesday.

Tinubu Is Compassionate, Uzodimma Tells Religious Leaders

0
Senator Hope Uzodinma and Religious Leaders

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has flagged off the presidential palliative distribution to the Muslim and Christian faithful in the 11 States that make up the South East and South South Geo-political zones, reminding the leaders of both faiths that President Bola Tinubu is compassionate.

During the event at Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu’s Square New Owerri on Friday, March 21, 2025, Sen. Uzodinma emphasised the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence among different faiths, stating that “it is easier for God to answer prayers when people live together in harmony.”

He urged the crowd of both Christians and Muslims who had gathered to collect the palliative from the President to view the exercise with spiritual eye that ought to resonate with the period they are fasting.

The Governor, who highlighted the significance of charity during the holy period, noted that President Tinubu has always remained a compassionate leader who means well for the country.

He maintained that the President is working hard to ensure food security by investing so much in agriculture; while at the same time providing palliatives to cushion the gap that may be created between the period of planting and harvesting.

He, therefore, called on Nigerians to always pray against anything that will distract the President from his efforts in making Nigeria a land of prosperity.

Uzodimma encouraged the representatives of Muslim and Christian Communities to prioritise the needs of the poor and vulnerable while sharing the palliative, reminding them that “true faith is about showing compassion and kindness to those in need.”

He informed that the President had magnanimously provided two trailer loads of rice, giving each State 1,200 bags of rice for the purpose of breaking their fast.

In addition, he said many cartons of Indomie were provided, with one trailer load for the Christian community and another for the Muslim community.

Uzodinma expressed gratitude to the President for the palliative measures, acknowledging that they will go a long way to “help cushion the effects of hardship occasioned by the global economic recession.”

He also announced that each of the States that came to Owerri to collect their palliative will receive N5 million as transportation grant to facilitate the distribution of the items to those they should be meant for.

Uzodimma who counselled the Christian and Muslim leaders to ensure hitch free distribution of the palliative in their respective states, insisted that the reason only 10 persons only were invited from each State for the flag off in Owerri was to avoid the usual stampede that regrettably occurs each time such an exercise is carried out.

However, he appealed to the leaders to ensure that the items are given to those who are vulnerable and cannot afford them as they observe the fast.

In their respective votes of thanks, the representatives of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and those of the Muslim Communities in the 11 States of the South East and South South expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the show of love and compassion and prayed God for peace, unity and prosperity across the nation.

They further commended Governor Uzodimma for encouraging and cultivating religious tolerance and understanding among diverse religious groups in Imo State in particular and the country at large, a situation they said has manifested in the peaceful coexistence of Christians and Muslims.

The Groups also commended the Governor for the massive road projects and infrastructural development across Imo State.

All the CAN Chairmen from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo State from the South East and their colleagues from Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers that make up the South South States were in attendance.

In the same vein, leaders of the Muslim Communities from the South East and South South States were also in attendance.

Thursday’s Parliamentary Vote On Rivers Confirms Democracy Non-existent In Nigeria – Peter Obi On X

0
Peter Obi

The parliamentary vote held yesterday (Thursday) clearly demonstrates that democracy, in its true sense, does not exist in Nigeria. Where there is no functional opposition, democracy cannot thrive.

Opposition is a critical pillar of any democratic system. It ensures that the right things are done, holds the ruling party accountable, and offers alternative viewpoints. However, an effective opposition can only exist within a system that supports proportional representation—an approach practised in countries like South Africa and Indonesia.

In South Africa, for example, the National Assembly has 400 seats. The African National Congress (ANC) received about 40% of the vote and holds approximately 160 seats, while the Democratic Alliance (DA), with about 20% of the vote, holds around 80 seats—alongside several other parties. Those who contested the presidential election remain the recognised leaders of their respective parties.

A similar situation exists in Indonesia and other countries where democracy is genuinely practised. As is the norm in such systems, laws prohibit elected officials from switching parties without forfeiting their seats. This helps maintain party discipline and preserves the sanctity of the electoral mandate. These mechanisms contribute to a more balanced, accountable, and credible democratic process.

If that were the case in Nigeria, our Senate—comprising 109 seats—would be more reflective of electoral realities, with the APC holding 44 seats, the PDP 33 (under the leadership of Atiku), and the Labour Party 27 (under my leadership). Ideally, the House of Representatives should mirror this balance, with approximately 144 APC members, 108 PDP members, and 90 Labour Party members. But this is far from the case. The absence of laws restricting party defection allows politicians to switch allegiances freely and without consequence. This not only weakens the opposition but also makes a mockery of the electorate’s will and undermines the integrity of our democratic institutions.

What we are left with is not a genuine democratic system, but one that is transactional, compromised, and, in many respects, resembles organised criminality. Unless we urgently implement reforms to entrench true democratic principles, enforce party discipline, and ensure fair representation, Nigeria’s democracy will remain fragile and dysfunctional.

But we will not surrender to criminality. We shall continue to fight for democracy—genuine democracy.
