After few days in captivity, the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) Police Command, in collaboration with the military, has successfully rescued a kidnapped naval officer, along with two civilians.

They were abducted by armed criminals in Mpape, Abuja, on March 21, 2025.

Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, in a press statement on Sunday revealed that as at approximately 7:35 PM on the said date, heavily armed assailants attacked the Maman Vatsa Estate gate, blocked Mpape Road, and opened fire on moving vehicles before abducting the three victims.

She explained that shortly after the attack, the kidnappers contacted the victims’ families, demanding a ransom of ₦500 million for the naval officer and ₦200 million each for the two civilians.

“Upon receiving the distress report, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), FCT Police Command, DCP Isyaku Sharu, in collaboration with military authorities, mobilized a joint operation led by the Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit and comprising of personnel of the Nigerian military, DSS, hunters, and members of the local Hunters’ Group.

“An intense search-and-rescue operation was conducted across Mpape, Gidan Bawa, Anguwan Mu’azu, and Yelwa Hills, covering areas in the FCT and Nasarawa State.

“Acting on credible intelligence, between 2:00 AM and 5:30 AM on March 23, 2025, operatives traced the suspects to a Fulani resettlement in Anguwan Mu’azu and Yelwa Hills, Nasarawa State, where four  suspects were arrested, and the victims were rescued unharmed.

“Additionally, the sum of ₦3.2 million, suspected to be ransom money from previous kidnapping operations, was recovered from the suspects.

“The victims are currently in stable condition and are receiving medical attention at the Nigerian Army Clinic. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the remaining suspects currently at large.

“Security deployments has also been reinforced in Mpape and surrounding areas to prevent future occurrences. As members of the public are advised to go about their daily activities without any apprehension.”

“Why My Husband Hired Kanu Agabi As His Lead Counsel”  – Nnamdi Kanu’s Wife

0
Nnamdi Kanu and his Wife and Kanu Agabi

By Adesina Soyooye

When detained, and embattled, Leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, hired fiery senior Lawyer and Activist, Professor Mike Ozekhome, as his lead Counsel, not a few people thought that would be Kanu’s last bus stop with Lead Counsels – especially, when Ozekhome secured a number of landmark victories for him.

It was not really quite public why Ozekhome ceased to be on Kanu’s legal team – whether he quit on his own or whether Kanu, who has a huge temper when he is angry, fired him. But Ozekhome dropped.

Before Ozekhome, there was Ifeanyi Ejiofor who had been with Kanu for a long time. When Ozekhome came on board, Ejiofor, young, bubbling with youthful zest, made way for him. He dropped to number two, while Ozekhome took the number one spot. But there was always another Counsel, American-trained Alloy Ejimakor, who, literally, adores Kanu. He was always lurking behind the scene, like a mother-hen. He was usually referred to as Kanu’s Special Counsel.

However, when Ozekhome disappeared from the scene, and Ejiofor, sadly, fell out with IPOB and, it was alleged, Kanu’s family too,  Ejimakor emerged, and took charge as Kanu’s Lead Counsel.

A couple of weeks ago, after Kanu lost it in Court and attacked, verbally, using choice words, the Federal High Court, the trial Judge, Honourable Justice Binta Nyako, Government Lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, and even his own legal team, his family, in a statement, let it be known that Kanu would from then on, defend himself in Court; that he needed no Legal Counsel anymore.

However, a couple of days ago, it was all over the Social Media that respected Senior Lawyer, Kanu Agabi, SAN, has been hired by Kanu to be his Lead Counsel. Many doubted that; they thought it was one of those stories.

But on March 21, when Kanu appeared before a new trial Judge, the Honourable Justice James Omotosho, because Justice Nyako has recused herself, Agabi appeared for Kanu as his Lead Counsel. If that appearance surprised many because of Agabi’s status – a very senior Lawyer, two-time Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, they were in for a bigger surprise.

Agabi began by saying he had a message for the Court from his Client. As everybody wondered what Kanu was up to again, Agabi threw what seemed unbelievable, considering it came from Kanu.

Reading from a prepared speech, which dripped with emotion, Agabi said he had Kanu’s permission to apologise to the Federal High Court, Honourable Justice Nyako, Govenment Lawyer, Awomolo, and his (Kanu’s) own Legal team, all whom he thoroughly insulted during his last appearance before Nyako. He said he was sorry. He pleaded for forgiveness. And promised to be of good conduct, going forward.

While many wondered what came over the IPOB Leader, his wife, Lolo Uchechi Kanu, endorsed the apology her husband tendered in Court.

In a statement which she personally signed, she explained that Agabi, given his stature, was brought in to smoothen the rough adges for her husband. “Chief Agabi, stepping into Onyendu’s brief, acted to smooth over the ruffled feathers in certain segments of the Bar and Bench caused by Onyendu’s legitimate, anger-fueled outbursts against Justice Binta Nyako’s Court which led to her recusal”, she said. She added that Agabi status demanded that he addresses her husband’s outbursts which shook the Nigerian Judiciary.

Her statement read in full: “In Court today, my husband, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, acknowledged the necessity for Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, the new Lead Counsel, to address the Court of Justice James Omotosho regarding what transpired at Binta Nyako’s Court which shook the foundations of the Nigerian Judiciary.

“These clarifications were duly delivered by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN – a towering  figure, twice Attorney General, twice Minister of Justice, and a former Senator.

“Chief Agabi, stepping into Onyendu’s brief acted to smooth over the ruffled feathers in certain segments of the bar and bench caused by Onyendu’s legitimate anger-fueled outbursts against Justice Binta Nyako’s Court which led to her recusal.

“Chief Kanu Agabi’s status made it necessary; he could not represent Onyendu without restoring the decorum expected of the Abuja Bench and the Judiciary as a whole.

“Remarkably, Justice James  Omotosho, who presided over the matter, also apologised to Onyendu for the prolonged delays and mishandling of his trial over the years at the hands of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“Chief Agabi’s intervention was strategic, balancing Onyendu’s fury with the dignity of the Court.

“I suggest we read the full speech before offering comments. Chief Agabi spoke in his own personal  capacity, and his vision for an amicable resolution (dialogue) and peaceful co-existence. It is not rocket  science.”

Nnamdi Kanu’s trial has been on since 2021 when he was renditioned from Nairobi, Kenya, to Abuja, Nigeria. He is facing a number of charges including treasonable felony.

Many Nigerians and groups have urged for a peaceful and political solution to Kanu’s issue. None has worked. Perhaps, Agabi’s approach could pull it, especially, now that Kanu’s wife is preaching “amicable resolution, dialogue and peaceful coexistence”.

Finally, Gov Otti Agrees To Revisit Contentious Pension Arrears Payment

Alex Otti - Governor of Abia State
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

At last, there appears to be a glimmer of hope that the long drawn battle between Abia State Pensioners and the Governor Alex Otti-led Administration may be coming to an  end.

The Pensioners had, shortly, after the State Government  claimed to have cleared their several years of pension arrears last year cried foul and took  to the trenches.

Reason: The senior citizens said they were  grossly shortchanged, with only a negligible  fraction of what was actually due to them paid.

Specifically, they claimed  that what was actually paid was the few months of the arrears that the present administration incurred, leaving behind  those  accumulated during previous regimes.

This, they alleged, was in  addition to forcing them into ceding their  humongous gratuities and entitlements under dubious hazy circumstances.

According to the Pensioners’ Leadership, the senior citizens were  cajoled, bamboozled ,and outrightly tricked into signing a pact they knew little or nothing about its full implications.

The Leadership of the Pensioners have, in the last one year, used every available platform to register their displeasure and to demand for a revisit of the agreement leading up to the pension payments.

But the state authorities will not have any of that. In fact, Governor Otti, in the last few months, has used every opportunity to lampoon the senior citizens, particularly their Leadership whom  he has dubbed irresponsible, deceitful and, ungrateful.

The obviously embittered Governor has, also, insisted that there is an agreement willingly entered into by all the parties.

Severally, he has refuted claims of Government brow-beating ,and forcing an agreement down the throats of the retired workers.

For him, the agreement leading up to the clearance of the pension arrears was mutually brokered and entered into.

He, therefore, sees the volte face by the senior citizens as opposition – induced, calculated to embarrass the Government.

However, not a few have tended to question the motive behind cajoling the pensioners into  forfeiting even a kobo of  their entitlements, under what ever guise.

This is even as many have condemned the signing of any agreement, whether willingly or forced with a sect of people, already, disadvantaged by many years of denial and starvation.

At his last, but one, monthly media chats in January 2025, the Governor announced the foreclosure of the possibilities of revising the pension arrears payment.

It is against this backdrop that the revelation of his readiness to reconsider the  issue will be a big relief for the retired workers and observers of the pension arrears payment controversy.

At an interdenominational thanksgiving service held at  the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia in commemoration of the 80th birthday of Abia elder Statesman, Senator Chris Adighije, on Saturday, March 22, 2025, Governor Otti promised to work in  concert with the leadership of the Pensioners to address any areas of disagreement.

The Governor’s assurance came on the heels of an appeal from the Chaplain of the FMC Chapel, regarding the issue.

The Governor, however, maintained his earlier position accusing the Leadership of the Pensioners of insincerity .

Similarly, he noted that the same insincerity and deceit were some of the reasons why past administrations in the state failed or neglected to meet their obligations to the retired workers.

The Governor berated the Leadership of the Pensioners for allowing themselves to be instigated by the same sect of people that failed to pay them their pensions for several years

He, pointedly, accused the Leadership of the Pensioners’ umbrella body ,of taking instructions from the opposition camp.

“Thank you for calling our attention to the issue of pension that had become problematic and I want to thank you for being honest.

“I have always maintained that our senior citizens are very honest people. But the problem is with their Leadership and the problem has to do with association .

“Somebody owed you for over ten years, and didn’t pay you. Then someone else came and brought N10 billion, and paid you, then the next day, you, the person that owed you, speaks for you.

“You can see that something is wrong. So, please, tell them to mind who their friends are.

“You can’t agree to something ,and then, you turn back to say you didn’t agree. You can’t sign, and say you signed under duress”, Governor Otti stated.

Coalition Calls for Release Of Detained Army General

General Oluwasegun Abiodun Bolarinwa

By Akinwale Kasali

A Coalition of O’odua Groups have called on  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release detained General Oluwasegun Abiodun Bolarinwa. The General has been incarcerated in the past three years on alleged trumped up charges.

The detained Bolarinwa is one of the Military Officers who provided life-saving information for the opposition during the June 12 crisis, including information helpful to the current President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Group described the continuous detention of Bolarinwa as an insult to the memory of those who fought for democracy in Nigeria.

It said it is widely believed that President Tinububu is either unaware or has been fed with false information about the detained General.

In a statement released at the weekend, the group urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and release the retired General currently kept at the Ikoyi prison.

It noted that during the June 12 crisis, Bolarinwa who was a Captain at the time, refused to be recruited into the killing squad created by the late General Sani Abacha prompting the reactionary wing of the military to target him.

The group stressed further that Bolarinwa is made to suffer due to the role he played in the struggle for democracy within the Army.

The continuous detention led to his escape to Cotonou, Benin Republic, where he was kidnapped by Abacha gang- led  Col Frank Omenka who was at that time the head of the Directorate for Military Intelligence, (DMI).

He was detained between 1994 and 1995 by Abacha. He is one of the few officers who has suffered undue persecution under the military.

Before the handover to democratic governance, he was also arrested and charged for plotting to overthrow the government.

The Group in the statement said:

“We call on President Tinubu to release General Bolarinwa who is a victim of political persecution.

“We caution that continuous detention of the General might lead to his death’, the League of O’odua United Groups, LONEF.

“He has been deprived of liberty and freedom. He is currently kept at Ikoyi prison. He has spent more than two years in prison. He is at the risk of death or even stroke.

“He has for a long time been denied of freedom,’’ the group said in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Abdulraheem Adegbenro.

LONEF said General Bolarinwa has suffered deprivation on the account of being a man of his conscience. ‘‘Under late General Sani Abacha, he was arrested and detained for his opposition to the annulment of June 12 election. He was persecuted and attacked by key actors in the Abacha government. He barely managed to escape death”.

The group said for the five years that General Abacha reigned, General Bolarinwa was a target of humiliation and all forms of degrading attacks adding that his current detention was motivated by his political beliefs.

General Bolarinwa was said to have played critical role during the military era by exposing the plot to kill Chief Abraham Adesanya and other members of the National Democratic Coalition, (NADECO).

It added that  Bolarinwa is also a victim of trumped up charges by dark forces of yesteryears trying to rope him in with corruption and fraud charges.

“I Apologise On Behalf Of Youth Corper, Uguamaye, Who Called Our President Terrible”

Dike Chukwumerije and Uguamaye

By Dike Chukwumerije

On her behalf, I apologize. She did not mean to call him a terrible president. What she meant to say is that he is a wonderful president with terrible impact. A  wonderful president with terrible policies that have had terrible consequences on ordinary people.

A wonderful President who has unleashed terrible poverty, and presided over a period of terrible insecurity, worse – much worse – than the blowing up of 2 pipelines for which he was prepared to take a terrible decision to suspend democracy, while ignoring the terrible behavior of his own. A wonderful president turning a blind eye to the terrible corruption and terrible nepotism within the fabric of his government, but wielding the sledgehammer with terrible viciousness on the heads of his rivals.

A wonderful president with terrible levels of intolerance for dissenting voices, and terrible disregard for the rights of young people to peacefully chose their own representatives.

On her behalf, I apologize. She did not mean to call him a terrible president. What she meant to say is that he is a wonderful president with terrible, terrible impact.

The Way We Are, No Serious Investor Will Consider Nigeria” – Jonathan

0
Goodluck Jonathan
Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

“The Judicial arm of this Government knows the truth, but pretending to be asleep. It does not want to be woken up.”

Finally, former President Goodluck Jonathan has broken his silence on the   state of emergency  declared in Rivers State.

Amidst strident and vociferous outcry across the country, the former President, just like his other colleagues, including the blunt  Olusegun Obasanjo, maintained a studied silence.

But at an annual Colloquium put together by the Haske Satumari Foundation in Abuja on Saturday, March 22, 2025, Jonathan described the proclamation of a State of Emergency in Rivers State ,and the suspension of the Governor ,his Deputy and  State Lawmakers  a gross abuse of power.

The former President insisted that impunity within the three arms of Government has done more damage to the global image of Nigeria than the activities of fraudsters.

The Source reports that the former President had in the thick of the ravaging Boko Haram insurgency in North East region in 2014 declared a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

However, the Governors, legislators and other duly elected officials of the affected states all remained in office.

But on March 18, 2025 while proclaiming the State of Emergency in Rivers State, President Tinubu appointed retired Naval Chief of Staff, Vice Marshall Ibok-Ete Ibas as the Sole Administrator after suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State Lawmakers for six months.

The action, despite being  ratified by the National Assembly, has continued to elicit widespread condemnation across the country.

According to Jonathan, people had called on him and Obasanjo ,to comment when the issue of the emergency rule first cropped up.

However, he noted that, it is not always the tradition for former Presidents to be making statements concerning the  actions and or inactions of the sitting  President.

“As a former President and also from the Niger Delta Region, when the  issue of the suspension of the Governor of Rivers state came up, people called me to speak out,

“I think people called on me ,and former President Olusegun Obasanjo to say  something. People wanted  us to say something about what was happening.

“But people don’t know that all over the world, traditionally, former Presidents and Leaders hardly make public statements on sitting  Presidents.

“This is to avoid tensions which the statements of the former leaders could generate within the system.

“In most cases, it is the practice among former Presidents to refrain from publicly commenting on the activities of sitting presidents.

“However, what is happening in Nigeria today  regarding the  situation in Rivers State can be likened  to an Indian proverb that says “if somebody is sleeping, really sleeping, you can easily wake up that person.

“But if that person is pretending to be sleeping, you will find it difficult to wake up the person.

“The key actors in Nigeria ,from the Executive, Legislature, Judiciary to others, for me, are pretending to be sleeping. The Judiciary knows the best thing to do. But unfortunately, it is  refusing to do it

“They are pretending to be sleeping, and like I pointed out earlier, waking up such an entity or persons will  be extremely difficult.

“This is because the persons know the right thing but will not do it.

“There are clear cases of  abuse of power cutting across the   three arms of Government, from the Executive, Legislature, to the Judiciary in the country.

“But I  always try to let our people understand that whatever we do in life tend to affect everybody. But sometimes, we do things thinking that they don’t affect us”, Jonathan noted

The former president lamented that ,the high level of impunity and abuse of power in the country has impacted negatively on the image of Nigeria, with the citizens subjected to ill-treatments all over the world as a result.

“Some people have not bothered to find out why our country’s international passport is not valued that much outside.

“Why is it that Nigerians are not given the kind of treatment befitting our status as a great country  at international airports?

“Unfortunately, many of us think that the shabby treatment we receive outside is because of the activities of fraudsters, yahoo- yahoo boys, 419 operators, and drug dealers.

“Unknown to many of us, the actions, decisions and the general conducts of those in Government – the three arms of Government – affect the image of Nigeria and its citizens all over the world”, Jonathan stated.

The former President noted that genuine and serious business operators and investors will find it extremely difficult to bring their capitals to countries where the Judiciary arm of Government is widely seen as compromised.

“No investor can bring his/her money to put in a country where the Judiciary is compromised; officials of the Executive arm are perceived to be influencing judgments from the Judiciary.

“Anybody that brings his capital to such an environment will be  taking a  very big risk.

“The truth remains that whatever we do in the system will always have a way of either positively impacting us as a country and or ruining us.

“If we are desirous of building a prosperous, just and peaceful country where every segment will be happy, then we have to do the right thing.

“Whether you are holding an Executive Office as the President, Governor, Lawmaker, Minister, Judge, and what have you, there is the need for us to do the right thing, if truly we want to build a nation that future generations will be proud of”, Jonathan admonished.

Insecurity: Police Command Rallies Stakeholders In Ondo

Wilfred Afolabi - Ondo CP

By Ayodele Oni

As part of strategic move to curtail insecurity in Ondo State, the Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi has read riot act to Fulanis warning them to stop harbouring miscreants under the guise of being kinsmen.

The Commissioner of Police, who held a meeting with members of Fulani from various communities in the state at Owo, explained that the parley was part of the command’s effort to strengthen its community safety partnership amongst  the people of the state,

Afolabi, in his address, explained that he had to come to the community himself to meet the people to discuss how the security of the State will not be compromised.

He urged the Fulani community members not to harbour criminals under the guise of tribal affiliation and to actively participate in the security of the State.

According to the police boss, they should complement the police efforts by providing genuine information that would help rid the state of criminal activities, particularly kidnappings.

Afolabi further spoke on the need for peaceful co-existence between herders and farmers, emphasizing that peace and security are essential for business growth.

He cautioned against encroachment and grazing into farmlands area, noting that farming is also the farmers means of livelihood and both parties must respect boundaries.

In response, the leadership of the Fulani community commended the efforts of the Police in maintaining law and order and assured the CP of their commitment to peaceful co-existence.

It promised never to cover, engage in or support any criminal activity that could destabilize the State.

The leadership of the Fulanis on behalf of their people promised to support the Police by providing information that would help nip crime and enhance security in the area.

The CP has been holding consultations with various ethnic groups in the state as part of the strategy to check rising wave of kidnappings and killing of farmers by suspected herders.

Afolabi had earlier met with local hunters and other neighborhood security groups within Akure and its environs.

The meeting, focused on strengthening collaboration between the Police and local security outfits to ensure crime is eradicated across various communities in the State.

Present at the meeting were members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS) Local Hunters, Vigilante groups, and other security outfits.

The stakeholders expressed their commitment and readiness to work with the Command in ridding the State of all forms of crime and criminality.
