0
Benjamin Hundeyin

The Lagos State Police command has refuted reports that some suspected Boko Haram terrorists have moved into the state.

The report had claimed that some members of the deadly sect were arrested by the security agencies in the last few days, raising apprehension among the residents, particularly as Christians are celebrating the Easter.

The magazine reported that the IGP Kayode Egbetokun has directed all police formations across the country to step up security in strategic places, in other to make the Easter celebrations a hit-free event.

Reacting to the report, the Spokesman for the state Police Command Benjamin Hundeyin, said Boko Haram members were not arrested, he however stated that  the Command has commenced full investigation on the issue.

According to him, the police had dispatched investigators to ‘the indicated places’ as soon as the report broke, but the report was debunked by ‘ leaders, drivers,  and operators in the community, urging residents in the state to go about their duties without fear as security agencies are on top of security in the state.

Hundeyin also advised journalists to verify stories before going to the press.

He said, “The outcome of the investigation reveals that there is nowhere throughout Lagos State that the group mentioned in the report – Boko Haram – were seen or sighted or arrested.

“Furthermore, in the trailer park communities mentioned, the leaders, operators, and drivers in the indicated places in the report clarified to the police that there were no such elements of Boko Haram seen or arrested in those localities.

“Members of the public are encouraged by the Commissioner of Police to go about their duties and other means of livelihood without fear or apprehension.

“The writer of the story is advised to verify facts and truth of any information before going to the press. ” the police spokesman said.

Appointments: Buhari’s Nepotism Worse Than Tinubu’s, Sen Shehu Sani Scolds Northern Leaders

0
Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani, a human rights activist has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to tow the line of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari in appointment people into his government.

According to him, the former president appointed predominantly people from his state Katsina into key government positions, saying Tinubu should not follow his wrong steps.

The senator however slammed those criticising Tinubu, particularly from the northern part of the country, who he said kept quite when their son Buhari was in power, appointing mainly persons from the north into his government.

“The DG of SSS, Daura was from Katsina state, the DG of NIA, Rufai was from Katsina state, the MPA, my sister Hadiza, she’s from Katsina state, Director of Federal Mortgage Bank, Katsina state, SMEDAN, Katsina state, FRCN Katsina state, NIMET Katsina state, NIMASA Katsina state, Railway Corporation, Katsina state, all those things, you don’t talk of Chairman of federal civil service about 30 (of them) We don’t have time, I can state all of them. All from Katsina state,” he said.

Sani also listed other positions occupied by northerners under the administration of Buhari.

He said, “At a certain time in this country, the Controller General of Immigration, which is Babendede, is from northern Nigeria. Customs, Hamid Ali is from northern Nigeria, Civil Defense, Audi is from northern Nigeria, Chairman of Federal Road Safety Corps is from northern Nigeria. Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba is from northern Nigeria, the Chief of Nava staff, the Chief of Army Staff, they’re all from northern Nigeria. We have had all these things here, and you have never had any person from the south of part of the country raising issues.”

Recall that Senator Ali Ndume representing Borno North recently accused President Tinubu of nepotism, accusing him of giving key positions in his government to people from the south west, where the president hails from.

Senator Sani spoke on Channels Television Politics today programme on Friday, amidst criticism against President Tinubu’s recent appointments.

The president has been accused of appointing people from a section of the country into his government, the administration has however denied the allegation, saying appointments had been made based on merit and in line with the constitution.

But speaking Senator Sani said Tinubu should avoid following the ‘evil’  steps of Buhari.

“I will say that President Asiwaju should also be very careful. He shouldn’t toe that line because it has been in African political geography that each time a person takes over position of office, he fills the major positions with people from his ethnic group and it is happening everywhere,” Sani said.

OPINION: And Steve Osuji Goes Mad Again

0
Oguwike Nwachuku and Steve Osuji

By Oguwike Nwachuku

The Vanguard Personality of the Year Award 2024 has come and gone. From all indications, it was a huge success.

The turnout of Nigerians from all walks of life, who emptied themselves into the venue at Eko Hotel and Suites Convention Centre on Friday, April 11, 2025 was impressive and massive.

Across political, business, religious, civil society, media, security, students demographic strata, this year’s award, like the ones before it, lived up to the expectations of the organisers and the Nigerian society.

Not only were those physically present to witness the occasion satisfied with the choice and quality of awardees, others who, for one reason or the other could not make it to Lagos, but watched the live coverage on television, could not agree less.

Only one man – Steve Osuji, a Nigerian journalist, and I believe, a proud indigene of Imo State, but who has suddenly found joy in criticising everything that crosses his view, no matter how noble, is crying wolf over the Vanguard award.

Since April 11, 2025, when the event took place, Steve has been weeping like a baby subjected to a punishment by the guardians that is beyond his/her carrying capacity.

From the piece he wrote on his column – Expresso, and published on the social media platforms on April 15, one could see Steve’s blood-shot eyes, the result of weeping he must have subjected himself to.

In fact, I am tempted to believe that Steve’s weeping is only comparable to what is contained in the Bible verse in Jeremiah 31:15 (or Matthew 2:18), “A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children, refused to be comforted for her children, because they are not.”

The last time I checked, Steve did not lose anyone to warrant such weeping that is only comparable to that of Rachel who was distraught over the fate of her children – Joseph and Benjamin – or better still, the Babylonian exile as it concerned the Israelites in another interpretation.

Why then is Steve weeping like a baby, you may ask?

The reason is obvious. He is weeping because the Governor of Imo State, Dist. Sen. (Dr.) Hope Uzodimma, CON, was a recipient of the prestigious Vanguard Personality award in the area of infrastructure.

Steve belongs to the few persons, (by the way, they are all from Imo State) who hate to hear that anything good, contrary to their wish, happens to Uzodimma. They have been in this situation since January 15, 2020 when Uzodimma took over the levers of power as the Governor of Imo State.

Five years down the road, they have been suffering from a self-afflicted sickness called hate diarrhoea. The sickness rankles with them anytime there’s good news in Imo and Hope Uzodimma’s name is mentioned.

Each passing day, those in this circle look for ways and means to discredit the Governor. Their only reason – Hope Uzodimma, via judicial pronouncement, not through any fiat or coercion, but through a globally acceptable judicial process, defeated and replaced their political benefactor from office.

Since then, they are ready to do anything to please their master, including telling cheap and unfounded lies to discredit Uzodimma and his government.

That also explains why a Steve who lives in Lagos, the place for the award, would be busy in his house diagnosing misinformation, spreading rumour and orchestrating mischief while the whole Imo State citizens in Lagos were at Eko Hotel and Suites serenading their Governor for the prestigious Vanguard honour.

As far as Steve and his gang of rabid Uzodimma critics were concerned, the Infrastructure Governor of the Year honour which Vanguard painstaking and carefully shortlisted and awarded Uzodimma was misplaced.

To Steve, Vanguard goofed. To him, Uncle Sam goofed. And Vanguard has lowered the standard of her award. I shall return to this shortly.

Let me be clear, Steve Osuji is my friend, brother, and professional colleague. He is one person I have considerable respect for. And I still do despite his unexpected unbecoming demeanour lately due to his failure to juxtapose his emotions with political interests.

By the way, I am not the only one surprised about this current trend and the harm it has done to brother Steve. But I will continue to pray for him maka na ihere onye ara na eme onye nweya (it is the relative of the mad person who suffers the shame of the brother’s madness).

As a matter of fact, two persons who are well known to Steve sent me a message regarding his latest bitter harangue about the Vanguard award and both of them raised the same concern in a question form – Is Steve okay?

In Steve’s own words, the Vanguard award to Uzodimma for the impact his administration has made in the area of infrastructure “traumatised” him.

But I think different why Steve said he is traumatised. I think the real reason why he is  taunted, both physically, psychologically, spiritually and mentally, is because against all odds, Steve and his gang of critics cannot come to terms with the level of development associated with Uzodimma in Imo State.

Put differently, they never believed that Uzodimma will have any record of achievement to show for coming to power. That has always been their supplication. They wanted him to fail.

Unfortunately for Steve and his cohort, that is not the situation in Imo today. So, the trauma is self-inflicted.

It is a shame Steve said that Vanguard gave the Governor award on infrastructure for building only three sub-standard roads –  Owerri-Orlu, Owerri-Okigwe and Owerri-Umuahia in five years.

What a laughable, puerile, and unfortunate comment from someone of Steve’s standing, a former banker, editor, and media aide to two governors.

For the records, let me remind Steve, again, that apart from the Owerri- Orlu, Owerri-Okigwe, and Owerri- Mbaise- Obowo- Umuahia roads, Governor Hope Uzodimma has more than 200 internal roads credited to his administration. Copies of the report on the roads which are available are for his asking.

Depending on when last Steve visited Imo State, having been enconsced, nay cocooned himself in Lagos, the Orlu-Mgbidi road, the Orlu-Omuma-Mgbidi road, the Okwudor-Awommamma road, the MCC-Toronto-Orji-Road Safety road have long been in use by appreciative Imolites.

If I were Steve, I would have been silent about those periods he claimed he worked for two governors as he mentioned.

My reason. Under Uzodimma, Imo State is a proud owner of a brand new House of Assembly Complex that is the best in Nigeria. Uzodimma built brand new State Banquet Hall, brand new Executive Chambers, brand new Governor’s Lodge, three brand new General Hospitals at Omuma, Oguta and Ohaji, brand new Assumpta Control Post Flyover, brand new Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Centre, to name but a few.

If these did not qualify as infrastructure facilities, one wonders how Steve defines his.

Steve unwittingly brought out for comparison the periods under which he served as media aide to two governors without sparing a thought that under those periods, his principals were too short-sighted to imagine what ought to constitute the infrastructure of Imo State of the future. What they could not do then are the things Uzodimma conceived the idea today and did, hence the Vanguard honour.

I do not know why Steve thinks that the infrastructure template for Imo State should be the one existing only in his mind. Or better still, why he thinks Vanguard should have consulted him before arriving at her informed decision on what constitutes critical infrastructure in Imo.

Recently at an event at Owu Amakohia Ikeduru, I was introduced to one Retired Major General Augustine Oguledo who told me he was pleased to meet yours sincerely as a member of the Hope Uzodimma’s administration.

He said the Uzodimma administration has done so much for Imo in the area of roads and other infrastructure, and confessed that no governor in the history of the current democratic dispensation has taken it upon himself to sincerely serve Imo people the way Uzodimma has.

General Oguledo emphasised so much about the quality of Owerri -Umuahia road, indicating that ever since he knew that road, this is the only time it has been properly constructed.

We have always said that we are not averse to criticisms when they are constructive and  informative since such brand of criticisms helps to advance the course of democracy and good governance.

But it hurts when those who supposedly ought to know, people like Steve, deliberately disinform the public, out of sheer hatred for someone, or as a result of outright wickedness and mischief.

I recall vividly some of yours sincerely’s interventions to Steve’s earlier pieces that also bordered on feeding the public with half truths or even public incitement. Obviously, these are not qualities that should be linked to Steve, a man who, by right, is now an elder statesman.

I do not think that if Vanguard award to Governor Hope Uzodimma was misplaced as Steve imagined, the calibre of Imo sons and daughters, friends and well wishers from across the country who joined in celebrating with him on the said day would have been possible.

Prominent sons and daughters of Okigwe zone where Steve issues from did not just show massive solidarity with Uzodimma on the honour, they also used the opportunity to thank him for extending his infrastructure facilities to their area.

Okigwe zone was not alone as prominent sons and daughters from other zones – Owerri and Orlu did almost the same thing.

As Christians, we are admonished to celebrate with those who celebrate and mourn with those who mourn.

Even without the Vanguard award to Uzodimma, why would Steve choose to mourn like Rachel when he ought to be celebrating his governor if he really means well for him?

So, where then lies his own faith as a Christian?

It is not enough for Steve to tactically shift loyalty to the Governors of Enugu and Abia States, just to further his hatred for Uzodimma. What I know is that the solicitation for the relationship will come to naught in no time. He will soon realise that those in charge of the States in question are no match to Uzodimma in terms of verifiable achievements.

Those who constitute themselves into oka nma na’ama (that is, those who have little regard for their home base) will always have themselves to blame when the chips are down.

I am certain that those who pretend to be blind over Uzodimma’s developmental strides in Imo State, including the ones that are brought to their doorstep, will have no choice than to praise him after he must have left office when, God willing, their self- inflicted blindness would have been cured and their sight restored.

Tinubu’s Paris Retreat: Presidency Replies Critics, Says President In charge, On Duty

0
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Adesina Soyooye

“Mr President has left Paris for London and will return to duty in Aso Rock after the Easter holiday”

The Presidency has responded to the multitude of critics who are lamenting President Bola Tinubu’s absence from the country in the face of the unprecedented attacks in States by terrorists and hoodlums.

From Plateau, Benue, Taraba, Zamfara States and more, blood flows, helplessness reigns, over 200 people have been mowed down in cold blood – men, women, youths, children, babies. Nobody is spared. In most other States, kidnapping for ransom is the order of the day. But the President is absent.

Two weeks ago, almost, President Tinubu left Nigeria for Paris, France on what the Presidency said was a working visit. It is within this period of the President’s  absence that blood is flowing like a river.

His continued absence in the face of this killing field has shocked many and attracted lamentations and strongly-worded condemnation from the masses and the high and mighty. They expected him to cut short his visit and rush home to take charge. They describe his absence as dereliction of duty; they say he is in Paris wining and dining while the country which President he is on fire, boiling.

But the Presidency does not think so; it  says calm down, all is well.

In a response signed by Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, released on Thursday, the Presidency said President Tinubu is fully on duty and in charge. The statement said he is ruling Nigeria from where he is; that he is giving orders from there.

The statement, also, disclosed that he had left France for  London, over the weekend, and would be back to Nigeria on the conclusion of the Easter holidays.

Said the Presidency in the Statement:  “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains fully engaged in Nigeria’s governance even though he is away in Europe.

“His absence remains temporary and in line with the communicated time frame of approximately two weeks.

“The President left Paris for London at the weekend and has maintained constant communication with key Government officials; overseeing critical  national matters, including directives to security chiefs to address emerging threats in some parts of the country.

“His return to Abuja and the resumption of duties at Aso Rock will follow the conclusion of the Easter holiday.

“The President’s commitment to his duties remains unwavering, and his administration continues to function effectively under his leadership.

“We appreciate the public’s concern and assure all Nigerians that governance proceeds without interruption.”

Gani Adams Warns Bloggers Against Causing Rift Between Ooni, Alaafin

Ooni of Ife and Alaafin of Oyo

By Akinwale Kasali

There have been speculations about supremacy battle between the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeen Owoade and the Ooni of Ife, HRH Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, but the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has warned bloggers, content creators, and social media users against causing disunity between the revered Monarchs.

He said Bloggers were fanning embers of disunity among the Kings alongside other Monarchs in the South-West through their posts and comments on issues of seniority.

The Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Co-founder, gave this warning during his address at the 2025 Oke ‘Badan Festival, held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.

Adams said, “I have watched with dismay the recent unnecessary comparison being drawn between the Alaafin of Oyo’s stool and that of the Ooni of Ife, regarding which one is senior to the other, by bloggers and some online media platforms.

“Let me reiterate that both traditional stools and the revered Royal Imperial Majesties occupying them are two of the most prominent Obas in Yorubaland and globally.

“I especially appeal to bloggers across the region and the country not to publish content capable of creating disunity among our traditional rulers and respected traditional institutions.”

He urged content creators to be responsible in their reporting and careful when developing content for their various platforms without inflaming public sentiment.

Speaking on the festival, Adams said, “The Oke-Ibadan Festival is a yearly celebration that honours the founding of Ibadan, the Aboke, and the people of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.

“It is a cultural and traditional event where the Ibadan people pay respect to their ancestors, reaffirm their cultural values, and promote unity.

“The name ‘Oke-Ibadan’ translates to ‘Hill of Ibadan,’ referring to the original settlement site on a hill where the city was formed in the 18th century. Though there are various accounts of the origin of ‘Oke Ibadan,’ there is a general agreement that Lagelu, Oro Apata-Maja, who was the founder of Ibadan, established the festival.”

He however urged the Oyo state government to make the hill a tourist destination by raising awareness about its historical and cultural importance.

“The Oke-Ibadan Festival serves as a reminder of the historical background of the Ibadan people and the legacy of their founders. The festival includes honouring the goddess of the hill and acknowledging the role of the city’s founding fathers.

“Oke Ibadan is a formidable and highly historical rock to the Ibadan people. It played a vital role during ancient wars. Ibadan people see the rock as a source of children, wealth, and many other blessings.”

He also urged the state’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism to list the rock as one of the major tourist sites in Yorubaland.

He stated, “The ministry should promote it just like Olumo Rock in Abeokuta, Oke Idanre in Ondo, Oke Erinmo in Ilesa, Oke Asabari in Saki, Oke Iyake in Ado-Awaye, Oke Agelu in Oyo State, and many other spiritually significant rocks across the region.”

Natasha Akpoti and Senator Godswill Akpabio

By Akinwale Kasali

Following the Thursday morning’s attack on her family residence,  embattled and suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has  linked it to her ongoing dispute with Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

She said the invasion may be a form of retaliation over recent allegations she made against him.

The Senator said the attackers may have mistaken her bro presence in the house for hers, leading to the invasion that night.

Fortunately, no one was hurt, and the case was reported to the Police.

She said that the incident happened shortly after her younger brother visited the area with some contractors to inspect locations for projects she had brought to the district.

It would be recalled that she had publicly accused the Senate President of se*ual harassment, sparking a wave of controversy within political circles.

The lawmaker however demanded for her

full security team to be restored and urged the Police to take up the case without delay.

She appealed to the public to remain calm as the matter is being looked into.

The Senator has also stated that the attack will not stop her from doing her work or standing for the people she represents.

Ataga’s Murder: Chidinma Remains Defiant, Distances Self, Says She Met Ataga’s Lifeless Body

Chidinma Ojukwu and Osifo Ataga

By Akinwale Kasali

The trial of Chidinma Ojukwu over the murder of Super TV CEO, Michael Usifo Ataga, is still ongoing.

Chidinma, the prime suspect testified before a Lagos High Court on  Thursday on how she discovered Ataga’s lifeless body, June 15, 2021.

The former Undergraduate of University of Lagos, UNILAG, Mass Communication Department, who was later expelled following her alleged tole in the Murder of Ataga said she returned from buying food and juice, knocked repeatedly on the apartment door without a response, then pushed it open to find blood on the floor and Ataga lying motionless in a pool of blood at a short-let apartment in Lekki.

Chidinma, who is undergoing trial alongside her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and Adedapo Quadri, faces charges, including conspiracy, murder, and theft related to Ataga’s death.

Forensic evidence presented in court includes a DNA blood sample found on Chidinma’s red dress that matched Ataga’s DNA, linking her to the crime scene.

The trial has also featured confessions and forensic expert testimonies, with the court reviewing video evidence and statements written by Chidinma.

During the trial, Chidinma emotionally recalled and said, “I saw him in a pool of blood, I immediately dropped everything and rushed to him, his eyes were half-shut and there was no pulse”.

Led in evidence by her counsel, Onwuka Egwu, she recounted her relationship with Ataga, which began in November 2020.

She testified that they met through a mutual friend, Fiyin, who was dating Ataga’s friend, James.

She described Ataga as kind and supportive, claiming he paid her school fees and helped finance her cosmetics business.

She revealed that Ataga, a Media Executive from Edo State who resided at Victoria Garden City, had three children with his wife who was based in Abuja.

According to her, on June 13, 2021, Ataga informed her of his upcoming birthday and invited her to spend time with him before traveling to Abuja for a family gathering.

“Due to ongoing renovations at his VGC residence, he suggested booking a hotel or short-let apartment in Lekki, where he had scheduled meetings,” she said.

Chidinma stated that she found a short-let apartment at 19 Adewale Street, off Ologolo Road, Lekki, which Ataga approved.

According to her, they met there that evening, went out to eat at Ango Villa restaurant, bought wine, and returned to the apartment to eat, drink, and smoke.

On June 14, they woke up late and Ataga allegedly asked her to contact her supplier for ‘loud’ (cannabis) and rohypnol. She said he sent N15,000 for that and later N25,000 for food. She was out for about two hours buying meals due to COVID-related restrictions and delays.

On June 15, she said Ataga requested more cannabis but asked her to pay since he was unable to transfer funds.

He also gave her money for food and juice. After a delay caused by a mix-up over the okro soup she was asked to buy, she returned to the apartment — only to be met with a horrifying scene.

“I saw blood stains, pushed the door open, and saw him on the floor, covered in blood. I checked for a pulse — there was none.”

In panic, she said she cleaned blood off herself, changed clothes, and packed her belongings, including a brown envelope containing Ataga’s bank statements, ID cards, and documents belonging to one Mary Johnson. She also took some jewelry before leaving the apartment in a cab.

The case continues to unfold in the Lagos High Court at Tafawa Balewa Square, drawing significant public attention due to the high-profile victim and the dramatic court proceedings.

It has been adjourned to April 28, 2025, for  continuation of trial.

Uromi Killings: “Stop Carrying Weapons From North To South”, NASS Member Cautions

0
Hon Alhassan Kabiru Rirum

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The  Lawmaker representing Rano/Bunkure/ Kibiya Federal Constituency of Kano  at the National Assembly, Hon Alhassan Kabiru Rirum on Thursday, April 17, 2025, cautioned his constituents against hunting in the Southern region of the country at this critical time.

His admonition is coming against the backdrop of the lynching of no fewer than 16 hunters in Uromi, Esan North Local Council of Edo State, early in the month.

The victims were,  reportedly,  killed by a mob that mistook them for part of the kidnappers that have been terrorizing some parts of Edo State of recent.

The incident has however provoked wide indignation and condemnation from across the country.

Amidst the outcry and tension that have trailed the killings, Hon Rirum, whose constituents from Bunkure were the victims, expressed his  total disapproval of carrying guns and other weapons from the North to the South in the face of the present security challenges in the country.

According to him, conveying guns and other dangerous weapons from the North to hunt in the South has the huge potentials of provoking misunderstanding, and violence.

Hon Rirum, who spoke on Thursday during a condolence visit to the families of the victims  of the  attack in Torankwa Community, Bunkure Local Council of Kano, noted that gone  are the  days hunters could criss cross the nooks and  crannies of the country without any iota of suspicion.

He regretted that the dire security challenges facing almost all parts of the country in various forms has made  inter-regional hunting expeditions no longer feasible.

“The present day Nigeria requires people doing businesses or engaging in trades that would not create any suspicion that might result in uncertainties.

“Carrying dangerous weapons and moving around with them from one end to another in this sensitive period of insecurity in the land will surely send a bad signal and result in causing chaos. Therefore, our hunters should henceforth stop this practice of moving to the South with weapons in hunting expedition.

“Just recently, over 30 of my Rano home town hunters were apprehended in Ondo State. I had to personally go and see the Governor and show evidence that they are not criminals before he worked out their release .

“If those people in Ondo who arrested our Rano hunters were as senseless as those of Uromi, what do you think would have happened? The story would have been different by now”, Rirum noted.

The Federal Legislator who is loyal to the NNPP faction opposed to the Kwakwassiya movement later donated the sum of N5 million to the families of the victims.
