By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The umbrella body of Aba Landed Property Owners , the Aba Landlord Protection and Development Association ALPADA, on Saturday April 5, 2025, expressed its unflinching support and cooperation to the Abia State Government’s  commitment towards ensuring that every building in the State, particularly, the commercial hub Aba is equipped with a fire fighting device.

The Source reports that Governor Alex Otti, on a sympathy visit to the victims of an inferno that razed a two story building in Aba on Friday April 4, 2025, announced that plans are underway for every building in the city to have a fire extinguisher.

According to the Governor, the idea is to ensure that residents are  properly equipped to attend to emergency situations such as fire outbreaks.

The Governor who was accompanied on the visit to the building located at number 73 Lagos Street by the Mayor of the Aba South Metropolitan Council, Hon Obialor Anyanwu, was deeply moved by the devastation wrought by the early morning inferno.

The two storey residential building was completely razed with the occupants unable to recover any tangible property.

The Governor expressed shock and sadness over the huge loss  incurred by both the owner of the property, Vincent Uzuegbu, and the occupants.

“My dear people of Aba, I am deeply saddened by this tragic event. I understand the pain and sense of loss that come with such disasters.

“As your Governor, I want to assure you that we will do everything in our capacity to support the victims and prevent such incidents in the future by way of ensuring that every home gets a fire extinguisher.

“We will however provide immediate reliefs to those affected, including temporary shelter, and financial assistance to ameliorate their sufferings.

“We will also conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause (s) of the fire outbreak and take measures to prevent similar incidents”, Governor Otti stated.

In a statement issued on Saturday by its President General, Sir Alphonsus Udeigbo, the Aba Landlord Association lauded the Governor for his prompt intervention and  decision to identify with the  victims of the inferno including the owner of the building.

The body expressed its readiness to support and collaborate with the State Government in ensuring that every building and home in the commercial nerve centre is equipped with adequate fire fighting device.

The ALPADA leadership identified fire outbreaks and their devastating effects as one of the factors threatening businesses in the commercial city

“We want to express our sincere appreciation to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, for promptly identifying with the victims of the fire incident at one of our member”s building on Lagos Street,Aba.

“Particularly, we are happy with his promise of providing succour for the victims, including temporary accommodation.

“We, also, want to  assure His Excellency of the readiness of ALPADA to fully support the idea of ensuring that every building has a fire extinguisher.

“We are immensely grateful, for the unprecedented level of empathy which the Governor has so far shown to the victims, the property owner, and the Aba residents as a whole.

“We are  unwaveringly committed to partnering with the State Government to reduce to the barest minimum incidents of fire outbreak in the  State.

“One of the greatest problems facing us – Landlords, and even businesses in Aba is that of fire outbreaks.

“This is because when the fire incident occurs the victims always lose everything. Reason being that they are always helpless in controlling the situation.

“So we are overjoyed by the Governor’s promise of ensuring that every building gets a fire extinguisher”, Chief Udeigbo stated.

CBN: Diaspora Igbo Leaders Accuse Cardoso Of Ethnic Cleansing

0
Yemi Cardoso - CBN Governor

Diaspora South-East leaders have accused the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso, of promoting a calculated “ethnic cleansing” of Igbo professionals from Nigeria’s apex bank.

In a detailed petition signed by respected South East diaspora figures across the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, South Africa, Canada, and beyond, the group decried what they called “a blatant, unprecedented sidelining of South Easterners” in the CBN under Cardoso’s watch.

The document references a widely discussed report by journalist and broadcaster Rufai Oseni, which exposed a deep-rooted pattern of nepotism and ethnic bias in the latest round of directorship appointments.

The petition alleged that Governor Cardoso has relentlessly purged the CBN of top South East professionals since assuming office.

In May 2024, all South East directors were dismissed, including Chibuzor Efobi, who headed Financial Policy and Regulation, Dr Scholastica Ozoemena Nnaji of Trade and Exchange, Chibuike Nwaegerue from the Other Financial Institutions Supervision Department, and Nkiru Asiegbu who led the Special Duties unit.

The petitioners say their dismissals were carried out without board approval and disciplinary proceedings, and without the affected officials being informed of any wrongdoing.

Beyond directors, over 20 deputy directors and 15 assistant directors, many of whom were foreign-trained specialists, were also axed.

Among those swept out were Dr Valentine Ururuka, a macro-prudential expert trained at the University of Lancaster; Dr Odim Orji, a leading monetary policy expert; Angela Ofili, an HR strategist; and Christian Eze, another respected HR professional.

The group insists that these terminations were illegal and have opened the floodgates to multiple lawsuits that now embarrass the institution and threaten to impose heavy liabilities on Nigerian taxpayers.

The petitioners further claim that following this purge, the recent wave of appointments to fill the vacant directorship positions was rigged in favour of South West candidates, many of whom allegedly underperformed or never applied for the positions they were eventually given.

They cited the case of Rita Ijeoma Sike, a top performer in the interview for Director of Banking Supervision.

Despite reportedly outscoring her South West counterpart, Adetona Sikiru Adedeji, the position was given to Adedeji, while Sike was moved elsewhere.

In a similar vein, Chikelu Edison Oballum won the interview for the Development Finance Institutions Supervision Department but was sidelined in favour of Monsurat Vincent, who was instead appointed Director of Strategy—a role she neither applied nor interviewed for.

Another high-performing candidate, Paul Ihuoma Oluikpe, ranked among the top two in both Strategy and Corporate Communications Department interviews. Yet he was denied both roles. Instead, the rules were changed mid-process and Strategy was handed to Vincent, while Corporate Communications was merged with Investor Relations and handed to another less-qualified candidate.

Promise Joe-Ibekwe, a promising Southeast woman who competed for Director of Payments System Management, was bypassed in favour of Rakiya Opemi Yusuf, who reportedly never even applied for the role. Likewise, Ifeoma Geraldine Okwor, who was impressed during her assessment for the Banking Services Department, was ultimately ignored while less competent candidates from the South West secured top positions.

The Southeast leaders describe these actions as “a tribal bazaar” where ethnic loyalty trumped national unity and merit. They pointed out that Governor Cardoso, in a single wave of appointments, gave 13 directorships to Yoruba candidates out of 29 departments while leaving the entire Southeast with just one.

In contrast, previous administrations, including that of the embattled former Governor Godwin Emefiele, ensured at least four directors from each geopolitical zone. Even during Emefiele’s controversial reign, regional balance was never this recklessly violated.

In their statement, the petitioners warned that Cardoso’s actions have eroded public trust and could endanger national cohesion. They called on the National Assembly to immediately probe the appointments and reverse what they describe as “institutionalised injustice.”

They also demanded sweeping reforms in the governance of the CBN, including the separation of the roles of the Governor and Board Chairman to prevent what they see as unchecked abuse of power.

The petition closes with a strong message to the Nigerian government and political elite: “The South East has paid its dues in building this nation. We will not tolerate systemic exclusion. We are mobilizing our senators and representatives to act. This injustice will not go unanswered in 2027. Any institution or administration that discriminates against us will face political consequences.”

The document bears the signatures of over 20 influential South East voices in the diaspora, including Elder Chibuzor Nsofor in Hamburg, Aloysius Egwu in California, Prince Ulu Aguchekwa in London, Amara Duru in Helsinki, and Professor Chike Ubani in Missouri, among others.

How Baby Died Inside Incubator In Ondo Teaching Hospital, Group Demands Probe

Ondo University of Medical Sciences - UNIMED

By Ayodele Oni

A Group, Not Too Young To Rule, has urged the Ondo  State Government to probe the death of a newly born baby at the University of Medical Science Teaching Hospital (UNIMED), Ondo, on Tuesday, April 1st, 2025.

According to the findings by the Group, the baby was placed inside an incubator which is not functioning after a

Caesarean surgery on the mother.

The Group, in a letter to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa “demand justice for the Akinwalere Family, who recently tragically lost their newborn baby due to gross neglect and the professional negligence of some medical staff at the University of Medical Science Teaching Hospital (UNIMED), Ondo, on Tuesday, April 1st, 2025.”

The letter, signed by Ogundairo Samuel,

National Coordinator of the Group added that “After nearly two decades of waiting, the Akinwalere couple’s joy was short-lived, as their baby’s life was cut short due to the hospital’s negligence.

“The newborn had been delivered via Caesarean section and has it was a pre-term delivery, the baby was placed in an incubator.

“Unfortunately, this particular incubator was not working, which was something that the medical staff on duty ought to know.

“But due to the unprofessional lackadaisical attitude of those who ought to know better, the innocent child was thereafter sentenced to death! This devastating loss has understandably left the family in unbearable pain and psychological trauma.

“We urge you (being a father and a compassionate leader) to intervene immediately and ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death.

“Those found culpable must face the full wrath of the law within 72 hours to avoid severe legal consequences. Similar incidents of gross neglect and professional negligence has more or less become the norm at UNIMED, Ondo.

“It is an open secret that patients die there regularly due to the reasons highlighted above. This situation cannot be allowed to continue considering the fact that several millions of naira have been channelled to that particular medical facility (and others like it) yet we are assailed by poor staff attitude, faulty or unavailability of medical equipment or medications and inadequate infrastructures whenever we visit public health establishments.

“Your Excellency, you need to take immediate and decisive action on this recurrent fiasco in the public health delivery system of the Sunshine State.

“Furthermore, we demand adequate compensation for the Akinwalere Family to cover their medical expenses and other related costs. This is the least that can be done to alleviate their suffering.”

How Generals Contributed Money To Secure General Tsiga’s Release – General Abdullahi, rtd

0
Brigadier-General MI Tsiga

On the 5th of February, 2025, Brigadier-General MI Tsiga, rtd, a former Director General of the National Youth Service Corp, NYSC, was violently abducted from his home in Tsiga Town, Bakori Local Government Area, Katsina State.

That the General could be abducted so violently shook the country, especially, the Military.

For 56 days, the General was in the custody of the bandits who abducted him. And even though his abductors were communicating with members of his family, Nigeria’s Security Agencies could not locate him; they could not track the bandits.

But, mercifully, after weeks  of harrowing experience during which he saw death, literally – battled with large snakes, scorpions, hyena, physical and mental torture, including placing an unexploded rocket by his side and using him and other victims as human shield each time a military aircraft flew by, he has been released.

It is not known how much was paid as ransome before his release, but in a thank you note to those who contributed their money and time to ensure his release, his colleague, Brigadier-General Ismaila Abdullahi rtd, who coordinated the fund raising  disclosed that the General’s kidnappers asked for a whopping sum of N400,000,000 (Four Hundred Million Naira).

To raise the money, a WhatsApp Platform was created, and account number attached. Said  Brigadier-General Abdullahi, Nigerians, including Generals responded overwhelmingly. “Donations  came in pouring like August Rains”, he disclosed.

Following is the full text of the thank you note on behalf of General Tsiga to all those who contributed in anyway to his release signed by Abdullahi. In the letter, Brigadier-General Abdullahi detailed how the money was collected for Tsiga’s release.

“GENERAL MI TSIGA: A NOTE OF APPRECIATION

Date: 4th April 2025

“I, Brigadier General Ismaila Abdullahi, on behalf of Brigadier General MI Tsiga, friends and associates wish to express our profound gratitude and appreciation to you all on your wonderful and unexpected contributions in our struggle to ensure that General MI Tsiga regained his freedom from the 5th of February 2025 when he was violently taken away from his house in Tsiga Town, Bakori LGA of Katsina State.

“The moment we heard of General MI Tsiga’s kidnapping, my self and Major General   LB Bunza started exchanging ideas towards the release of General Tsiga.

“On the 9th of February 2025, we decided to create a WhatsApp platform that we named simply  “TSIGA.” The aim was to inform the general public of the unfolding situation, i.e., the abduction of General MI Tsiga. As days went by, and when the bandits made their demand of 400,000,000 naira as the ransom money they wanted before they released General MI Tsiga, we decided to solicit for donations on our TSIGA PLATFORM.

“The response was overwhelming. On this platform, we had over 300 members; made up of retired military officers, serving military officers, and civilians from all segments of our society, university lecturers, ambassadors, and businessmen.

“For proper accountability, General Bunza and I decided that all the contributions should be channelled into General Tsiga’s bank account. So, I asked Kamal (General Tsiga’s son) to send us his father’s bank account.  He immediately sent me General Tsiga’s bank account, domiciled in Unity Bank. I posted this account on the  TSIGA PLATFORM and requested donations from members to assist General Tsiga’s family in meeting up with the demands of the bandits.

“The response, like I had earlier observed, was overwhelming. Donations came in pouring like ‘August Rains.’

“Initially, I started updating the amount being received, but some members noticed and quickly advised that the update was not proper security-wise, so I stopped posting the daily contributions.

“From 22 February 2025, when donations started coming in to 15 March 2025, the amount we received was indicative that  yes, TOGETHER WE CAN.

I want to therefore, on behalf of General MI Tsiga, family, friends, colleagues and associates, thank you all for your brotherly and sisterly expression of concern and contributions both financial, moral, and even spiritual in our collective efforts to make sure General MI Tsiga regained his freedom.

Today, 4th April 2025 I have come to the end of my humble task. The task of keeping the general public informed of General MI Tsiga’s predicament. As I write this little write-up, I feel fulfilled as our collective efforts have finally yielded a very positive outcome ie THE RELEASE of General MI Tsiga.

“Thank you and bye.

Akpabio To Sue Natasha, Abbo,  Demands Public Apology

0
Godswill Akpabio and Natasha and Abbo

By Adesina Soyooye

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Friday, demanded a public apology from two people – one, a serving Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan with whom he has been having a messy running battle, the other, a former Senator, Elisha Abbo.

In a statement on Friday by his Media Adviser, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio said he would proceed to Court if the two fail to publicly apologise to him.

Akpoti-Uduaghan fail foul of Akpabio when she alleged on Tuesday that he and two others planned to assassinate her. In Abbo’s case, the former Senator in an interview on national television alleged that Akpabio was instrumental to his sacking as a Senator by the Court of Appeal.

Akpabio strongly denies both allegations and has threatened legal action. He described the allegations as malicious, false and defamatory.

In the statement Eyiboh quoted the Senate President as saying: “As a statesman devoted to national unity and democratic values, I will not be distracted by malicious falsehoods or inflammatory rhetoric.

The accusations made by Akpoti-Uduaghan are not only false but a dangerous and provocative fabrication.”

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, he said  had previously made an unsubstantiated accusation of se3ual harassment against Akpabio, which according to him, Akpoti-Uduaghan “later abandoned without clarification”, and  noted that it confirms a “troubling exploitation of victimhood narratives for personal and political gain.”

The statement further said:

“It is a recurring pattern of weaponizing falsehoods and exploiting victimhood for political advantage.”

The statement, titled “Re: False and Malicious Allegations Targeting the President of the Senate,” also took on  former Senator Elisha Abbo’s allegations against Akpabio on April 2 2025.

Said the statement:

“Abbo had previously retracted those claims in 2023, issuing a public apology after admitting they were based on false assumptions.

“Abbo’s removal was the result of a constitutionally grounded judgment by the Court of Appeal, not political interference.”

On Abbo’s allegations  that Akpabio denied him his entitlements after he was sacked,  Eyiboh explained that “Senate entitlements are processed administratively and not at the discretion of the Senate President.

“These new claims regarding being denied entitlements are also categorically false.

“The timing and similarity of these attacks suggest a politically motivated effort to discredit the Senate’s leadership.

“These individuals, possibly backed by hidden interests, appear united in a desperate attempt to undermine the Senate and its leadership.

“Regardless of the necessity for legal redress, formal letters of demand seeking retractions, apologies, and compensation are underway,” Eyiboh said.

Imo Judiciary: Justice Nzeukwu, Most Senior To Be Acting Chief Judge, Says Imo Govt

0
Justice Theresa Chikeka and Hope Uzodimma

Imo State Government has described the recently sworn-in Acting Chief Judge of the State, Hon Justice Theophilus Nnamdi Nzeukwu, as the most senior Judge in the State and, therefore,  qualified to hold the position.

According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba, Hon Justice Nzeukwu’s appointment was sequel to the removal of the former Chief Judge from office

He explained that ” as a result of the dismissal of the former Chief Judge, Hon Justice Theresa Chikeka for age falsification, the Judicial Service Commission of Imo State took time to go through the records of Judicial Officers in Imo State. After the exercise, it was confirmed that Hon Justice Nzeukwu was most senior to occupy the position, by all available records.

The Commissioner emphasized that Hon Justice Nzeukwu’s appointment came after a thorough personnel audit of the Judiciary by the State Judicial Service Commission which discovered that Hon Justice Nzeukwu was the most senior by records

The Governor, therefore, in exercise of his powers, pursuant to section 271(4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, now appointed Hon Justice Nzeukwu as Acting Chief Judge, the statement added.

For the records, the confirmation, however,  of Nzeukwu as the substantive Chief Judge, or otherwise, is the responsibility of the NJC.

The NJC in a statement where it distanced itself from the appointment of the Action Chief Judge by Uzodinma said that the Judge the Governor appointed, far from being the most senior in rank, comes in as number four. The NJC, also, said that the letter from the Governor to the Commission,  asking for permission to appoint an Acting Chief Judge, was still pending.
