Rivers Pro-Wike Lawmakers

By Ayodele Oni

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesome Wike, allegedly, may have bankrolled a foreign trip for the suspended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The Lawmakers, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule are currently in the United Kingdom, (UK) on a tour.

Since they were suspended with Governor Siminialayi Fubara, nothing has been heard about the Lawmakers who were on the verge of removing the Governor before President BolaTinubu declared a State of Emergency.

It was, however, gathered that the Lawmakers and their families are still occupying the legislative quarters in Port Harcourt after the emergency declaration.

The Sole Administrator of the State had earlier ordered the Lawmakers to vacate the quarters.

A statement by Amaewhule’s Special Assistant on Media, Martin Wachukwu, confirmed that the Lawmakers had left the shores of the country.

Amaewhule was said to have declared open the 10th Rivers Assembly Legislative Tour of the United Kingdom on Friday.

The suspended Speaker claimed that  the Legislative Tour would afford the House the opportunity to learn new things outside the shores of Nigeria which would improve the capacity of members for the task ahead.

The opening ceremony, which was said to be the Day One of a five-day tour, took place in Central London and focused on “Legislative Dynamics in the Presidential and Parliamentary Systems”.

Principal officers and members of the House, who spoke at the opening ceremony expressed optimism that the tour would provide another opportunity for peer review and gainful insights for parliamentary oversight.

The statement said the legislative tour brought to three  the total number of capacity building programmes organized by the leadership of the House without funding from Government.

“These programmes including the present tour are 100 per cent sponsored by concerned leaders of the state, who have remained supportive of the House despite the prolonged, provocative and unconstitutional non-funding of the House by the suspended Governor Siminalaye Fubara.

“In this regard, the House used the opportunity of the opening ceremony to express immense gratitude to the political leader of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and other political leaders under the umbrella of the Rivers State Elders Council who have continued to stand by them.

“10th Assembly members prayed for God’s abundant blessings upon their lives and endeavours,” the statement reads.

Amaewhule extended appreciation of the House to Rivers people for their confidence in the House and their continued support.

He assured better days were ahead and urged them to remain peaceful and supportive of the Sole Administrator in Rivers State.

Caleb Mutfwang - Plateau state Governor

By Akinwale Kasali

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has stated that the ongoing attacks and killings in some parts of the State is a coordinated crime sponsored by conflict merchants and not farmer-herder clashes as speculated.

Governor Muftwang made this assertion during the Fashion and Arts Exhibition organised by the Tincity Fashion Week titled “The Plateau Experience”, in Abuja.

It would be recalled that gunmen attacked Manguno, Daffo and Josho communities of Bokkos Local Government Area, LGA, of the State.

During the attack, many houses and other properties worth millions were destroyed, and there were human fatalities.

The Governor insisted that the attacks were a well- organised criminality, and disclosed that his Government and Security Agencies had put measures in place to forestall future occurrence.

“I want to thank all of you who are here to support and honour Plateau with your presence in this event. We do not take this show of solidarity lightly.

“We contemplated suspending this event due to the current security situation in the state, but we decided not to allow the situation ruin the good things we have to celebrate.

“And I must say that the aim of the enemy is to throw the state into gloom and mourning but we will rise above their intent and not give them what they want.

“For those who think that the current situation is a farmer-herder issue, let me disabuse your mind from that perception; it is a product of organised crime by malicious elements who do not want peace to reign in the state.

“I want to assure the good people of Plateau that God will give us victory over these miscreants and their end has come” he said.

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has clarified that no member-State has withdrawn from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), emphasizing the severe security implications such a move would have.

The clarifications followed report that Niger Republic has pulled out of the joint operation.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, addressing a press briefing, in Abuja, asserted that the MNJTF remains a crucial regional security collaboration and that Nigeria is actively working to prevent any member state from departing.

“When you hear ‘deem say,’ it means the information lacks credibility,” Kangye stated, dismissing the reports.

He explained that the MNJTF was established by the Lake Chad Commission countries to address shared security concerns.

“Nigeria has been making significant efforts to ensure the sustainability of this task force. However, if for any reason a member decides to pull out, the implications will be substantial. The synergy we are supposed to enjoy may no longer be there.

He stressed the interconnectedness of regional security, saying, “It is not in our interest for any country to leave because whatever affects them also affects us.

“If a country withdraws, it creates a gap in effort and reduces the strength of the contingent from that country. Therefore, efforts must be made to prevent such a situation from happening.”

Kangye also reassured the public that security forces are committed to apprehending notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji.

He denied claims that military operations against herdsmen, terrorists, and cattle rustlers had been scaled back, citing recent operations and the elimination of high-value targets.

“As for Bello Turji, it is just a matter of time; an appointment will be fixed with him by his maker.”

Furthermore, Kangye rejected accusations of neglecting wounded soldiers, affirming the military’s commitment to their welfare.

“We will continue to examine the situation, and as we always do, we will provide further briefings when necessary.

NYSC: FG Itches For Extension Of Service Year

NYSC - Corps Members

By Ayodele Oni

After over 50 years of its existence, the Federal Government has hinted about the possibility of extending the service year of the National Youth Service Corps, (NYSC).

The NYSC scheme remains one of the legacies of the military administration in Nigeria which floated the scheme.

The National Youth Service Corps was established in 1973 by Decree No. 24 of 22nd May, 1973.

The Scheme was conceived after the civil war of 1967 as a means to concretize the Federal government agenda of reconciliation, rehabilitation and reconstruction for national integration.

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa, put forward proposal  for the extension of the service year of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to two years.

The Minister, also, hailed the scheme for the digitalized process that has helped in curbing certificate racketeering involving some foreign trained graduates within West Africa.

Remarking on Friday when the new DG of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja, the Minister, also, spoke on the lingering issue of OND part-time graduates with full-time HND who were previously exempted from National Service.

The Minister particularly advocated “for the extension of national service from one to two years, with the expansion of NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Training programme content for Corps Members.

“You have done so well as an organization. Let NYSC give people more opportunity to become job creators that will meet the needs of the country.”

General Nafiu lauded the minister, saying he has been innovative and has achieved giant strides in the education sector.

He called for the establishment of a database of Nigerian youths going abroad for degree programmes

“NYSC is ready to comply with policy guidelines as directed by the Federal Government. We are also trying to reform the Scheme to conform with the present national needs.”

Anambra @ Crossroads: The Arraignment Of The ”Native Doctors” And Battle For Public Morality

0
Arraignment Of The 'Native Doctors in Anambra

By Ugochimere Chinedu Asuzu

“A society fails the moment it exalts theatrics over truth, and mysticism over the law”

In a move both ground-breaking and symbolic, the Anambra State Government has initiated criminal proceedings against three high-profile native doctors—Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki, Eke Hit, and Onye Eze Jesus—in what many are calling a defining moment in the state’s legal and cultural history.

The trio, known for their flamboyant displays of metaphysical power, money rituals, and controversial online presence, appeared before the Anambra State High Court in Awka, on April 4, 2025. Presiding over the proceedings, Honourable Justice Jude Obiorah adjourned the case to April 11, 2025, to allow for proper service and formal arraignment.

These men, whose public personas range from self-acclaimed miracle workers to street-level “gods,” have amassed cult-like followings on social media. In a society grappling with economic disillusionment and spiritual desperation, figures like Onyebuchi Okocha (Onye Eze Jesus), Chidozie Nwangwu (Akwa Okuko), and Ekene Igboekweze (Eke Hit) have emerged as merchants of hope, mysticism, and spectacle—often unchecked and unchallenged.

But the tide may be turning.

The defendants are facing serious charges, including alleged involvement in the preparation of “Oke-ite”, a mysterious substance reportedly used for psychological manipulation and spiritual enchantment—acts viewed as exploitative, dangerous, and criminal under Anambra’s emerging legal framework.

The courtroom drama took a procedural turn as defense counsel Barr. Remigus Okoli accused the state of trying to hurriedly remand the defendants without due process. “Proper service and adequate time to prepare for their defense are constitutional rights,” he declared, framing the legal contest not just as a battle of guilt or innocence, but one of procedural fairness versus executive haste.

Efforts to reach F.C. Okeke, lead counsel to the state government, proved abortive. However, the government’s broader agenda seems clear: to confront the rise of spiritual demagoguery, reclaim the moral health of the public sphere, and uphold the newly instituted Anambra State Homeland Security and Public Safety Law.

This law—championed by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo—is a first-of-its-kind tool in Nigeria, enabling the state to prosecute actors whose public conduct, spiritual claims, or social influence threaten the sanity, security, and psychological stability of the people.

The significance of this trial cannot be overstated. For years, Anambra has watched as a new generation of online-native priests, prophets, and native doctors morphed into celebrities. While traditional spirituality has always had a place in Igbo society, the recent wave of ritual sensationalism, occultist branding, and miracle merchandising has raised the alarm among social critics, religious leaders, and policymakers alike.

These three defendants are not just individuals—they are symbols of a larger problem: the monetization of mysticism, the abuse of spiritual platforms, and the weaponization of fear and enchantment for influence and wealth.

The trial, now adjourned to April 11, is more than a legal formality—it is a cultural tribunal. It is Anambra State saying, “No more.” No more unverified resurrections. No more fake cash-spitting ceremonies. No more commanding spirits for likes, follows, and pay-per-view deliverances. No more illusion being paraded as divine.

What happens next will set a tone—not just for Anambra, but for all of Southeastern Nigeria. If the law prevails, it will mark a new era of accountability. If it fails, then the forces of illusion may gain new ground.

But for now, the people are watching. The court has spoken. The state has acted. And the truth is taking the witness stand.
