For opposing the approval of a-N300 billion loan for Governor Seyi Makinde by the House of Assembly, Oyo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), has organised a peaceful protest to support its Lawmaker’s stand on the loan.

APC explained that the protest was over what it described as alleged victimisation of one of its Lawmakers, Ibraheem Shittu.

The protest started in the early hours of Monday at the APC Secretariat located in the Oke Ado area of Ibadan.

Report revealed that the rally had in attendence the Chairman, Alhaji Olayide Abas, and other members of the party.

Shittu, who represents Saki West State Constituency, had, a few days ago, raised an alarm that the House of Assembly has approved a N300 billion loan for the State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

The APC noted that the Lawmaker has been receiving threat messages as a result of the alarm he raised.

The party noted that it organised the rally in order to ensure that nothing happens to the Lawmaker.

Oyo APC Chairman, Alhaji Olayide Abas, while addressing journalists, noted that the protest was organised to show love for the lawmaker and ensure that he is protected.

He added that the party organised the rally in order to show that it is solidly behind the lawmaker.

“We are here to show our support to him for taking bold step to stand against the loan. We are behind him.

“We are here to tell the governor that he should not send Oyo State to a perpetual loan collector.

“We are not satisfied with what is happening. What has the governor done with the previous loans.

“I have the protest letter here, he should not be victimised. The process to take over Oyo State has started.”

Terrorism: FG Promises Enhanced Military Operations

Kashim Shettima - Vice President

By Ayodele Oni

Six days after the horrific attack on Borno State by terrorists, the Federal Government has reacted to it.

The reaction came through Vice President Kashim Shettima who pledged  that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration will stop at nothing to bring an end to terrorism in the country.

Shettima is the immediate past Governor of the State.

The Federal Government came under strong condemnation for its silence since the attack that took the lives of 65 people in one fell swoop, including five soldiers, and even attracted a reaction from the United Nations.

Nigerians, especially the opposition, demanded commitment from the Federal Government to end the carnage in the country.

Shettima, who spoke on Monday, through Stanley Nkwocha, his Media Aide, assured enhanced military operations against all terrorist activities in Nigeria.

The terrorist attack claimed many lives in Darajamal community, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State. He condoled with the Government and people of the State.

The Vice President reiterated President Tinubu’s directive to the Armed Forces to review security operations, including the deployment of advanced military hardware and surveillance equipment to eliminate terrorist groups across the country.

In his condolence message which was posted on X, Shettima described the incident as a profound loss to both the state and the nation.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum @GovBorno, the people of Borno State, and the Nigerian military over the tragic loss of our compatriots.

“These deaths have left the entire nation in collective grief, but we are confident that justice will be served for the bereaved families,” the Vice President stated.

VP Shettima expressed confidence in the Armed Forces’ capacity to overcome the security challenges facing the state, citing President Tinubu’s approval for the acquisition of additional drones and his directive for all security agencies to intensify and review their operational strategies.

The Vice President highlighted the Federal Government’s  consideration of establishing State Police, emphasizing President Tinubu’s position that security challenges in some Nigerian states require specialized units that understand local terrain, culture, and can effectively network at the grassroots level.

He offered prayers for the bereaved families and assured both the state government and affected families of continued Federal Government support in addressing the security situation.

To stem the killings, a Northern Group has asked for the removal from office of Service Chiefs and the shake-up of the entire security architecture. Instead of getting better, the group said, insecurity is getting worse.

2027: LP To Deny Obi Presidential Ticket – Spokesman

National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, (LP), Abayomi Arabambi, has maintained that the party can survive without Peter Obi.

He also declared that Obi,  former presidential candidate of the party, will not secure the party’s ticket for the 2027 elections.

Recall Obi, during the recent August by-elections, had advised his followers to vote for candidates of the African Democratic Congress, (ADC), which he has aligned with, but not officially joined.

Although the Former Anambra Governor said his admonition stemmed from the absence of LP candidates across the country, the party debunked the statement as false and anti-party.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics on Monday, Arabambi said the LP could survive without Obi.

He insisted the momentum the party enjoyed in 2023 was driven more by the #EndSARS movement and public discontent with the Buhari’s administration than by Obi’s personal influence.

“We are going to do our 2027 without Peter Obi; he will not have our ticket,” he said.

Arabambi also accused the LP’s Acting National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, and activist Aisha Yesufu of working in alliance with Obi.

He vowed the party would move against them and challenged Obi to openly declare his exit from the party.

“Our plan is to get rid of these elements, people who are just an epitome of political extremism. We don’t want them in Labour Party.

“Now that they said they are going to ADC, we wish them well. Obi has one leg in Labour Party, one leg in PDP, and one leg in ADC.”

The LP’s scribe challenged Obi to announce his exit from the party.

“If he believes he has that proficiency on his own to have seven million votes in 2027 general elections, we advise him to pronounce his departure from Labour Party.

“The momentum in 2023 was not because of Peter Obi, but because of EndSARS. Obi was just a man who came to whip as a result of Nigeria’s tiredness of the scandalous administration of Buhari during the EndSARS.

“He only found Labour Party as that vehicle that can provide that change, and he was just Opportune to be the head.”

CBN: Recapitalisation Will Strengthen Banking Sector

Yemi Cardoso - CBN Governor

Yemi Cardoso, Nigeria’s Central Bank governor has assured that the ongoing recapitalization exercise  for banks in the country  will result in strengthening institution in the sector.

The CBN governor said a lot of progress has been made by banks in their quest to increase their working capital, in line with the apex bank’s directive.

He spoke with Andreas Voss, Chief Country Representative, Deutsche Bank Nigeria, at the European Business Chamber (Eurocham Nigeria) C-Level Forum in Lagos at the weekend.

The Cardoso-led CBN has set March 31, 2026 as the deadline for all  commercial banks in the country, including tier-one banks to raise their capital to N500 billion.

So far so good, Cardoso said on the recapitalisation exercise saying banks have complied with the directive, which according to him is meant to provide shocks in the sector, and promote “finance growth.”

He stressed that bank recapitalisation is part of the wholesale plan to stabilize the country’s economy, saying the CBN has been on the driver’s seat in ensuring that the financial sector have the capacity to drive lending and investment.

Cardoso: “We will protect the stability that has been re-established in the financial system with the utmost zeal.

“Our primary objective is to maintain that stability while simultaneously addressing inflation and ensuring that the financial system is sufficiently resilient to facilitate corporate lending and investment.”

NUPENG–Dangote Face-off: Saving Nigeria from an Avoidable Crisis

The brewing standoff between the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Dangote Group has once again placed Nigeria’s fragile industrial relations and economic stability at a critical crossroads. At the heart of the dispute lies the right of workers to freedom of association, guaranteed under Section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution and reinforced by international labour conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory.

NUPENG alleges that newly recruited drivers for Dangote’s fleet of over 4,000 CNG trucks are being compelled to sign agreements prohibiting them from joining existing trade unions. To NUPENG, this represents a dangerous attempt to weaken collective bargaining, strip workers of their dignity, and silence their voices within the labour ecosystem. It has described the move as a form of “modern-day slavery” and, in response, announced plans for a nationwide strike aimed at defending workers’ rights.

Dangote Group, however, sees things differently. Through its affiliates, including the Direct Trucking Company Drivers Association (DTCDA), the company insists that union membership should remain voluntary, not compulsory. It argues that employees should retain the freedom to choose their preferred mode of representation, even if that choice means staying outside the existing trade union structures.

This dispute transcends the immediate conflict between NUPENG and Dangote; it goes to the heart of workers’ representation, corporate governance, and regulatory clarity in Nigeria’s labour market. But beyond the ideological contest, the economic implications of a prolonged strike are potentially severe and far-reaching.

Fuel distribution remains the lifeline of Nigeria’s economy, and any disruption could result in nationwide fuel scarcity, panic buying, and soaring transportation costs. Rising logistics costs would, in turn, worsen food inflation, strain businesses, and weaken already fragile household incomes. A prolonged industrial action could also slow economic activity, reduce government revenues, and deepen public frustration in an already volatile economic climate.

At a time when Nigerians are contending with currency depreciation, rising inflation, and fragile public confidence, the stakes are simply too high to allow this crisis to spiral out of control. What is required is urgent, balanced, and constructive engagement among all stakeholders.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Labour and Employment, must take decisive leadership in facilitating a tripartite dialogue involving NUPENG, Dangote Group, and the DTCDA. It must also clarify the legal standing of employment clauses that appear to infringe on workers’ constitutional rights while providing a clear framework to protect both labour freedoms and corporate competitiveness.

NUPENG, for its part, must remain committed to dialogue while pursuing lawful remedies where necessary. Its role as a defender of workers’ rights is vital, but it must balance advocacy with national interest, ensuring that ordinary Nigerians are not disproportionately affected by prolonged disruptions to fuel distribution.

Equally, the Dangote Group must demonstrate good faith by revisiting its recruitment policies and engaging in transparent negotiations with recognised labour bodies. Attempts to bypass or undermine collective bargaining structures will only deepen mistrust and escalate tensions.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) must also rise above activism to play the role of mediator, ensuring that the wider labour movement channels its influence towards resolution rather than escalation.

Nigeria’s economy, already under immense pressure, cannot afford another destabilizing crisis. Protecting workers’ rights, safeguarding business sustainability, and ensuring uninterrupted fuel distribution are not conflicting objectives; they are interdependent imperatives that require cooperation rather than confrontation.

An amicable resolution is possible—but only if all parties approach the negotiation table with equity, empathy, and a shared sense of responsibility to the Nigerian people. The moment demands restraint, dialogue, and compromise. Anything less would risk plunging the nation into avoidable chaos.

Peter Obi Calls for National War on Insecurity

0
Peter Obi

In a strong public statement, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has sounded the alarm over the escalating insecurity across Nigeria, urging the federal government to declare a national war on violence.

Reflecting on what he described as a “bloody weekend,” Obi highlighted the deaths of over 100 Nigerians across Borno, Sokoto, Katsina, and Edo states. Among the victims were eight NSCDC officers, five soldiers, and dozens of civilians, alongside the abduction of a Chinese national in Edo and the kidnapping of passengers on the Benin–Iyere–Oluku road.

“These are not isolated tragedies,” Obi said. “They are stark evidence that Nigeria is in the grip of a full-blown security emergency.” He extended his deepest condolences to the families of the fallen, praising the courage of security personnel who risk their lives daily for the nation.

Obi warned that the casualty figures rival those of countries officially at war, arguing that the situation requires immediate and decisive action. “It is time to declare a national war on insecurity — to mobilise every resource, every agency, every state, and to suspend all distractions while we begin the process of reclaiming our nation from lawlessness,” he stated.

He also criticised government officials for prioritising foreign trips over domestic security, saying: “True leadership must be seen at home, personally coordinating the war against insecurity. Investors will not come into a war zone.”

Citing the experiences of Somalia and Libya, Obi stressed that no nation can prosper while its citizens live under siege. He concluded with an urgent call to action: “We must act now, with urgency and courage, to prevent a total descent into anarchy and rebuild Nigeria into a safe, secure, and productive nation for

Rhodes-Vivour: Obi Endorsed My Defection To ADC

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour

A former governorship candidate in Lagos state, under the platform of the Labour party, LP, says Peter Obi was aware of his defection to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

The politician dumped his former party for the ADC last week, a decision many said was in preparation for the 2027 election.

Obi, the 2023 LP presidential candidate has not openly duped the party even though he has been associating with the ADC lately, fueling suggestions that he may move out of the LP anytime soon, due to the protracted leadership crisis rocking the LP.

Rhodes-vivour came second in the governorship election in the state, during the 2023 election, and those close to him said he’s already gearing up to throw his hat in the ring for a second time, in his quest to become the chief executive of the State of Excellence, as the state is widely known.

The former gubernatorial candidate is planning to achieve his aim in the ADC, the party recently adopted by key opposition leaders in the country to unset the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC from power in 2027, according to political analysts who spoke on the issue.

Rhodes-Vivour, while speaking on a Channels Television programme Politics Today said his defection to the ADC enjoyed the backing of Obi, saying he’s in close contact with the former LP presidential candidate, who political interest and strategy align with his own.

“There is no step I am taking that he (Obi) is not aware of,” he said.

Recall that Rhodes-Vivour came second I n the last governorship election in the state, behind the incumbent, Babajide Sanwo-olu of the APC.

Dangote: NUPENG Defies FG Over Strike; Nigerians Appeal To Union

NUPENG

The President of the National Union of Petroleum Gas Workers, NUPENG,Williams Akporeha  has declared that there is not going back on its plan to embark on a nationwide strike beginning from Monday September 8, 2025 despite the federal government’s plea to the union to shelve the plan, The Punch reports.

Akporeba said the union leadership has agreed to meet with the federal government today, but will still go ahead with the strike.

The magazine reported that the federal government, on Sunday, begged the union not to embark on the strike because of the negative consequences it will have on fuel supply and economy generally.

The Tinubu administration also appealed to the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, not to join the strike after the umbrella workers union in the country, said its members will embark on a solidarity strike with NUPEND to press home their demand to force the Dangote Refinery from acquiring 4000 CNG-powered trucks for the distribution of its products across the country.

The management of the $20 billion petrochemical refinery in Lagos had recently irked NUPENG over its decision to purchase the trucks as part of its plans to ensure a seamless  distribution of the products produced from the refinery.

In a chat with one of our correspondents, the NUPENG president, who admitted that the union was invited by the government to a meeting on the matter, insisted that the group would begin its strike today.

Akporeha said the Federal Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company have reached out to the union over the planned strike. He, however, told The PUNCH that the intervention of the government was not enough to stop the planned strike.

“The Federal Government and the NNPC are reaching out, but there is nothing concrete yet,” Akporeha said. Asked if the strike would still start on Monday, Akporeha replied, “Yes, though the Minister of Labour has called for a meeting. The meeting will be held tomorrow (Monday) in Abuja. But the strike starts tomorrow morning as planned.”

Nigerians will be faced with excruciating hardship, and huge revenue will be lost,  if the planned strike action is implemented by the two unions, emphasizing the role that the refinery had played in stabilizing fuel supply in the country.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Patienec Unuobia, shared by, Head of Information and Public Relations, Patience in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the federal government said it’s doing all in its powers to avert the strike.

The statement: “I have invited all the parties for a conciliation meeting tomorrow, Monday, September 8, 2025. Since I have intervened, I plead with NUPENG to rescind its decision to shut down the petroleum sector. I also appeal to the NLC to withdraw the red alert it issued to its affiliate unions to prepare for a nationwide strike in solidarity with NUPENG

“The petroleum sector is very important to this country. It constitutes the core of the nation’s economy. A strike in the petroleum sector, even for just a day, will have an adverse impact on the economy. It will not only lead to heavy revenue losses, but also cause untold hardship for Nigerians,”

“Hence, I plead with the unions to give peace a chance. I assure them that this matter will be resolved amicably to the satisfaction of all the parties involved.”

Not a few Nigerians insist that the strike is capable of affecting the stability that has so far been enjoyed in the sector in the last one year, urging NUPENG to have a rethink.
