Again, Dangote Slashes Petrol Price To N840 Per Litre

0
Dangote Refinery

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced reduction in its ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, also known as petrol, from N880 to N840 per litre.

Anthony Chiejina, the spokesman for Dangote Group  made this known on Monday in Lagos.

Chiejina said, “PMS price has been reduced from N880 to N840 per litre effective 30th June.”

Dangote and other petroleum marketers had two weeks ago raised petrol price to over N900 per litre citing the war between Israel and Iran which lasted for barely 12 days. They claimed that the war had effect on the global crude oil prices.

The 12-day war which saw both sides attacking infrastructure in the two countries, saw crude oil price rose to nearly $80 per barrel, amidst experts fear that it could rise to over $100 per barrel.

This however did not happen following a United States, US brokered cease fire by the two countries which brought the war to an end.

Some marketers who receive products from Dangote Refinery  informed the magazine on Monday that they have already adjusted their pump price in line with the new reality.

Why I Will Never Reply Reno

0
Valentine Obienyem and Reno Omokri

By Valentine Obienyem

Each time Mr. Reno Omokri writes, his posts typically attract comments from about 20 to 30 individuals – many of whom appear to be either himself under various pseudonymous guises or individuals seemingly enlisted to echo his sentiments. Of course, he is a known identity thief. Yet, curiously, once he invokes the name of Mr. Peter Obi, engagement on his posts surges to unusual levels. Mr. Obi grants him the kind of attention that no other name in the world could fetch him. His writings, often driven by falsehoods and peppered with vitriol, make no pretence to fairness, nor do they offer anything remotely edifying. – they are warfare.

In response to his unrelenting provocations, I have authored no fewer than ten carefully considered articles – each a methodical dissection of Reno Omokri’s public persona, his self-collapsing contradictions, and his almost pathological obsession with Mr. Obi, as though under some spell from which he cannot awaken.

Surprisingly, these literary interventions – born more out of a moral impulse than a desire for applause – have garnered an unexpected breadth of readership and reflection. In a world increasingly shaped by the tyranny of noise, where truth often staggers under the weight of fabrication, the quiet act of writing with integrity still seems to stir something deep in the conscience of a thoughtful few. From these quarters, I have received earnest appeals that these essays be brought together into a book, less as a personal project, and more as a contribution to the enduring struggle between truth and falsehood. It is humbling to note that one of those women he mentioned as recommended Deputies to Alhaji Abubakar Atiku is at the forefront of this suggestion. It is an idea I now contemplate with growing seriousness, not as an author merely archiving his words, but as one responding to that deeper call of posterity – to give form to thought, clarity to confusion, and perhaps, in some small measure, light to an age shadowed by dissimulation as represented by Reno.

Beyond these essays, I have written two open letters of national importance – one to the President of the Federal Republic and another to the President of the Senate – firmly opposing any consideration of Mr. Omokri for ambassadorial appointment. If, as it appears, the President or his handlers hold Reno in exaggerated esteem, they are at liberty to appoint him as a minister or even Secretary to the Government of the Federation, so that we may, at least, contain his clownish excesses within our borders. But to designate him as Nigeria’s ambassador, our moral and political face to the civilised world, is akin to applying cosmetic putty to our  already diminished international image: a deception that cannot long withstand the test of scrutiny.

What becomes of Nigeria’s global image when foreign governments stumble upon Reno’s digital trail – his crude tirades in which he labelled the President a drug baron, a smelly, incontinent ancestor, a certificate forger, and worse? I shall personally make those diatribes available to them, where he itched in acid, the portraiture of Mr. President.  In this era of digital permanence, diplomacy demands consistency, integrity, and dignity. Mr. Omokri’s public record undermines all three. Besides, he is psychologically and intellectually deficit.

And yet, despite his torrent of falsehoods and feverish mischief-making, I have deliberately chosen not to issue any direct rejoinder to his provocations. This restraint is not borne of hesitation or fear – certainly not. Nor is it, as one disappointed friend ventured, a sign that I dread Mr. Omokri. One is reminded of the line attributed to Pauline Bonaparte: “The sound of the cannons is nothing to the Bonapartes.” Those acquainted with the theatre of noise know better than to flinch at its blasts.

Rather, my silence springs from a deeper conviction: Reno Omokri is unworthy of sustained intellectual or moral engagement. To engage him is to confer dignity upon a performance sustained by vanity, divorced from substance, and choreographed solely for the stage of digital spectacle. It would be akin to shadow-boxing with a mirror – noisy, exhausting, and ultimately futile.

From time to time, I have skimmed through his online postings, perhaps searching in vain for a trace of depth, humility, or coherence. Instead, I encountered a painfully pedantic showman – a man obsessed with appearing as a polymath, reminding one of his ancient correlate: the sophist, who, like him, thrived not on the pursuit of truth but on the illusion of knowledge.

Like the Sophists of old, he is more concerned with appearing wise than being wise; more invested in argumentation than understanding; more interested in persuading the crowd than in pursuing the good. He quotes Scripture as though it were a talisman, drops names of people like confetti, and deploys faulty and dubious historical references as if they were ornaments in a rhetorical parade. I was happy to read that the former urbane President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, had warned him to stop dropping his name. Atiku sounded the same chord when his spokesman, Mr. Paul Ibe, publicly cautioned him to desist from using the former Vice President’s name for attention-seeking ventures.

There is something fundamentally insecure about a man who must constantly clothe himself in borrowed reputations. Reno seems to believe that proximity to greatness, whether imagined or exaggerated, automatically confers significance. But reputation, like truth, is not transferrable by osmosis.

His compulsive name-dropping betrays desperation: a frantic attempt to validate himself by association. Yet, as the ancients have long taught us, character is not built through imitation but through formation – by walking the long, quiet road of discipline, not by staging noisy spectacles for applause.

What the Sophists sold in the agora for silver, he now dispenses digitally for attention – one tweet at a time. And just as Socrates distrusted those who turned wisdom into spectacle, I too find it futile to debate a man for whom truth is merely a prop in the performance of ego.

Have you noticed his frequent and boastful dare that readers should “fact-check” him? Such performative defiance could only come from one who knows most of his followers are either too distracted or too uncritical to take up the challenge. It is bravado born of knowing that his misinformation, once repeated often enough, will be believed by some. It is the confidence of a man who confuses unchecked noise with invincibility.

In truth, Reno belongs to that peculiar class of public figures who rise not by merit, rigour, or sacrifice, but by provocation and spectacle. They entertain us briefly, fill the noisy interludes in our national life, and just as suddenly as they arrive, they slip into irrelevance – becoming mere footnotes in the chronicle of political distraction.

In time, the world will tire of his antics. Time, that patient and unflinching editor, will as always perform its quiet surgery of the superficial – cutting away the hollow, the theatrical, the insincere. Reno will then be left to echo within the empty theatre of his own ego, long after the rest of us have moved on to more consequential voices, more authentic discourse, and more serious nation-building.

For my part, I will continue to choose the dignity of restraint. The truth, after all, does not scream. It endures. And in the end, silence will say what words cannot: that not every barking dog deserves a reply.

Anyanwu Remains PDP National Scribe As NEC Ratified Reinstatement

Senator Samuel Anyanwu - Sam Daddy

By Ayodele Oni

After Hitches occasioned by the seal up of its Secretariat by security agents, the National Working Committee, (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) met in Abuja  and officially reinstated Samuel Anyanwu as its National Secretary.

This is coming  after weeks of fierce internal battles, conflicting communications, and legal ambiguity over the position.

This resolution was reached during the party’s landmark 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday, in Abuja.

Announcing the decision after the meeting, Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, told journalists that the NEC had formally endorsed Anyanwu’s return to the office of National Secretary, thereby putting to rest the leadership tussle that had pitched key factions against one another.

The development follows repeated letters from the PDP to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), each bearing different names  including Sunday Udeh-Okoye, Setonji Koshoedo, and Anyanwu himself as the party’s secretary.

INEC had publicly warned the party over procedural inconsistencies and urged it to resolve the matter through its internal constitution and legal processes.

Weeks of consultations between PDP governors, the National Working Committee, party elders, and INEC officials culminated in the NEC decision, which now gives the party the stability it requires ahead of its national convention.

Damagum also confirmed that the 101st NEC meeting has been scheduled for July 23, during which final decisions regarding the national convention will be made.

The party is expected to use that session to firm up its 2027 electoral strategy and possibly ratify wider leadership adjustments.

The crisis surrounding the national secretary position had cast doubt over the legality of recent party actions, especially after INEC rejected a previous notice for the NEC meeting due to its failure to bear the mandatory joint signatures of both the National Chairman and National Secretary

By Akinwale Kasali

There was pandemonium in Kwara State, as angry youths set ablaze the office of the  National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA in Lafiagi,  Kwara State.

The youths further stormed the Palace of the  Emir of Lafiagi, vandalized it and set parts of it ablaze.

The reason for the youths is the growing insecurity in the State.

The protest erupted in response to rising cases of kidnapping and killings by suspected bandits.

The youths in the Community  expressed their displeasure over what they described as government inaction and neglect to the state challenges.

At the NDLEA office in Lafiagi, the youths razed it down, vandalizing the Emir’s Palace, smashing windows and forcing their way into the premises.

One of the Youths who spoke in the video that went viral, saying: “We have been crying and dying in silence. People are being kidnapped every week. We don’t sleep with our two eyes closed anymore, and nobody, not the Governor, not the Chairman, not even the Emir, is doing anything about it.”

Another protester said the demonstration was a result of long-standing anger over the unending attacks perpetrated by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

“The youths are tired. Our leaders are not helping us. The attacks are worsening and we’re left to defend ourselves,” he added.

Meanwhile, sources within the community confirmed the protest, stating that multiple security buildings and traditional structures were targeted during the protest.

“Protesters went to the Emir’s Palace and stormed some security agency offices. The NDLEA office was torched,” one source disclosed.

The protest is coming on the heels of fresh kidnappings in the area with three people abducted in two separate attacks within a 12-hour window.

A well-known Point of Sale (POS) operator named, Yman was said to have been kidnapped in Lafiagi on Sunday night, while two Hausa men were seized during an early morning raid on Kokodo village on Monday, June 30, 2025.

“The attacks are becoming too rampant,” a source said.

Another stated that, “As we speak, no one has heard from the kidnappers, but security operatives and vigilantes have been mobilized for a rescue operation.”

It was gathered that this latest unrest comes just days after Alhaji Chemical, a popular agrochemical dealer, was abducted from his Taiwo residence in Lafiagi town by armed men who overpowered local vigilantes before escaping on motorcycles.

The NDLEA is yet to issue a statement on this development, likewise the Kwara State Government.

Ondo State Police Command has commenced investigation into the death of a commercial s3x worker at a popular brothel in Akure.

Already, three persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, while two others are still at large.

State Command spokesman, Ayanlade Olusola, disclosed in a statement on Monday that the Ondo State Police Command has arrested three individuals in connection with the suspected murder of a s3x worker.

According to him, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 29th June 2025, at a brothel located in the Cathedral area of Akure, under the jurisdiction of ‘A’ Division.

The statement added that “At approximately 1000hrs, the Manager of the brothel reported to the police that there had been a violent altercation between a s3x worker and a male customer earlier that morning.

“According to the report, the disagreement began when the s3x worker reportedly complained of sudden weakness during an encounter and could no longer continue providing the agreed services.

“The customer became enraged, resulting in a heated verbal and physical confrontation. Despite attempts by the brothel’s manager and others to calm the situation, the customer insisted on a refund of the sum of Fifteen Thousand Naira (₦15,000).

“He subsequently fled the premises, only to return shortly after with a group of miscreants believed to be his associates, with the intent of forcibly retrieving the said amount.

“It was this development — the arrival of the suspect with others to escalate the confrontation — that prompted the Manager to place a distress call to the Police.

“A patrol team was immediately mobilized to the scene, arriving promptly and finding the suspect and his accomplices attempting to recover the money by force, while the victim’s condition continued to deteriorate.

“The Police acted swiftly and professionally while the victim was being rushed to a nearby hospital in the Lafe area, officers at the scene simultaneously effected the arrest of three suspects involved in the incident.

Wilfred Afolabi handing over to the New CP

By Ayodele Oni

Immediate past Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Wilfred Afolabi, has announced that he was happy that cases of kidnapping reduced to the barest minimum during his stay in the state.

Speaking of Monday at the handing over ceremony to his successor, Afolabi said that for almost a month now, there has never been any reported case of kidnapping in the State.

“I always say that it’s not the number of years you spent that really counts, but how well, the number, what have you been able to achieve within the short space of time that you were here.

“I’ve taken time to lecture, I mean, to communicate to  the incoming CP of some of the things that we put in place that assisted us to achieve the successes we could boast of today.

“The past one month, go and do your research, we’ve not had a single case of kidnapping in Ondo State.

“So it’s as a result of the crime prevention strategies, that were introduced and how our men were made to show more dedication to the job they’re doing. And I thank God that at the end, it yielded good dividends.

“So it must be sustained and what that implies is that you must give him more support even than you have given to me. And I’ve equally taken time to speak to all the officers too. The police job is one family.

“I will equally want to thank the Inspector General of Police. He gave me the opportunity to be the 45th Commissioner of Police of Ondo State. And at the peak of the security challenge we had in this state, I know how I got in touch with him.

“And he made logistics and technical support available to us, which went a long way in, assisting us to have most of the breakthrough we’ve had.

“I equally want to thank him for his patience. It’s on record, there’s never been a time, even despite the time we had all these security challenges, that he ever in any way threatened.

“In his usual manner, he will give you words of encouragement. So again, I want to thank him for that. I also appreciate the Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa for the support given to us by the Ondo State in helping us to check some of the security challenges we’ve had.”

On his posting, Afolabi explained that “I  want to put it like this, that for those of us who are professionals, posting is a normal thing. And I shared it with some of my officers this morning, that maybe because of my background, because in my days as a PMA personnel, no matter how good or no matter how fantastic that posting may be, after three or four months, you have to leave. So that becomes part and parcel of me.”

While taking over the command, the new commissioner, Adebowale Lawal, commenced his predecessor for “what you’ve been able to do in this command.

“I’ve seen it as a very big shoe, but I have the confidence that with the management team around me and with the support of the good people of Ondo State, we are going to take up the challenge.

“I’ve taken the responsibility, it’s a challenge. I want to assure everybody that I will live up to expectations. All I request is the support of everyone, the stakeholders, because security is not sole responsible of police.  So I’ll call on all the stakeholders, the military, civil defense, non-state actors to give all the support that you gave my predecessor.

“The areas where we need to address, where we need to re-strategize, he has briefed me, and we are going to work on those areas.”
