KWAM 1 Exonerates Self Over Unruly Behaviour At Airport, Says He Was Victim

Following the controversy that has trailed the alleged unruly behaviour of Veteran Juju Musician, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popular as KWAM 1 at the Local Airport of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, which led to the abortion of his trip,  subsequent ban from flying through any Nigerian Airport for six months, and the suspension of two Pilots, the Musician is pleading innocence.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, in its statement however established that KWAM 1 was boarding the aircraft with alcohol, which, according to aviation rule, is prohibited for any passenger on a commercial flight.

However, following the “near-death” experience of the Musician on the Tarmac of Nnamdi Azikwe Airport in Abuja where he was almost crushed by the angry Captain due to the alleged unruly behavior,  the licenses of the Captain and co-Pilot have been temporarily withdrawn while investigation continues.

Exonerating himself, the Singer in a statement by his Media Aide, Kunle Rasheed, debunked claims of his unruly conduct against the ValueJet staff and airport officials.

Rasheed labelled FAAN’s narrative of the incident as not only exaggerated but  misleading.

He maintained that K1 De Ultimate never acted in a way that endangered lives while also ruling out the claim that the singer attempted to obstruct the movement of the aircraft.

The statement read in part:

“Our attention has been drawn to reports alleging that King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate) displayed unruly conduct while attempting to board a ValueJet flight on August 5, 2025, allegedly causing a breach of aviation protocol.

“We wish to categorically state that this narrative is not only exaggerated but also misleading.

“At no point did K1 act in a manner that endangered lives or breached safety regulations. The substance in question — which was wrongly sensationalized — was nothing more than plain drinking water, given to him at the airport lounge while he waited to board the aircraft.

“Despite his respectful effort to clarify this, the situation was unnecessarily escalated.

“Claims that K1 blocked the aircraft or attempted to disrupt operations are completely unfounded. The veteran artiste, who is globally respected and frequently travels both locally and internationally, understands and strictly adheres to aviation protocols.

“If indeed there had been anything inappropriate in his conduct, the Head of Airport Security, officials from relevant agencies such as FAAN and NCAA, as well as the Chairman and Managing Director of the airline, would not have reached out personally to appeal, tender apologies, and even go as far as arranging a private jet to fly him to Lagos at no cost.

“Despite persistent persuasion from the airline’s top executives, K1 graciously declined the offer.

“We urge the media and the public to avoid sensationalism and allow the truth — not assumptions — to guide their judgment.

“K1 remains a law-abiding citizen and continues to cooperate fully with all relevant authorities to ensure that the matter is responsibly resolved.”

KWAM 1 however risks prosecution for terrorism

Michael Achimugu,  Spokesperson for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, revealed that the actions of KWAM 1 fall within terrorism offences under the aviation law.

“Nigeria’s civil aviation regulations are designed to implement ICAO Annex 17 standards. Deliberately preventing or disrupting a flight operation—even by a passenger—is automatically treated as unlawful interference and falls within terrorism offences by law. Section 83 of the Civil Aviation Act (2022) deals with hijacking and interference.

“It criminalised acts such as unlawfully seizing or exercising control of an aircraft, etc. That would include any passenger attempt to stop a plane from flying.

“Part 17 of the NCAA Regulations 2023 also sets the framework under which such acts are treated as terrorism-related offences”, Achimugu stated.

Already, he has been placed on a “no fly list” for a period of six months.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has placed veteran Fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, KWAM 1, on a ‘no-fly’ list. The action, which bars him from flying will last for a period of six months.

The ban was triggered by a breach of Airport Security Rules by the the artist at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

KWAM 1 will not be permitted to travel by Air from any Nigerian Airport for the next six months.

Preliminary report from FAAN accused the Musician of carrying Alcohol in a flask, spilling alcohol on Airport Security Personnel and the Pilot of ValueJet Airlines when he was denied boarding the Aircraft.

Though KWAM 1 issued a statement asserting that the content of his flask was “a plain water” and not “alcohol” as claimed by FAAN.

Kwam 1 unruly behaviour also resulted in the suspension of two Pilots of ValueJet Airlines for moving the Aircraft when the musician stood in front of it, and allegedly refused to give way. The action of the Captain and co-Pilot was interpreted as endangering the safety of Kwam 1 and others.

INEC: Why We Rejected LP Candidate For Edo Bye-Election

Prof Mahmood Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says the Labour Party, LP,  Julius Abure-led did not inform the commission of its readiness to contest the upcoming National Assembly bye-election in Edo state. It was based on this that the party was disqualified from contesting the election slated for next week, the commission said on Wednesday.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Anugbum Onuoha made the clarification yesterday, saying the Commission did not also monitored the primary election that produced the party’s candidate, Paul Okojie, nominated to contest the Edo state Central Senatorial election scheduled by INEC for next week.

“From our records, the Labour Party and some other parties neither invited us to observe their primaries nor complied with the necessary procedures. In some cases, we arrived at venues, but the locations were shut, and no activity took place,” the REC said.

The clarification comes on the heels of a protest by the Abure faction of the party, to INEC National Headquarters in Abuja yesterday, demanding that the party’s candidate be included on the list of candidates contesting the bye- election.

According to checks from INEC nine political parties had been cleared for the election. They include the All Progressives Congress, APC, Action Peoples Party,  Action Alliance, AA; African Democratic Congress, ADC; APC; Allied Peoples Movement, ; Action Democratic Party, ADP; New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP; Peoples Democratic Party, PDP; and Zenith Labour Party, ZLP.

Meanwhile, another faction of the party led by Nenadi Usman, in its reaction to the protest, described the protesters as “impostors’ saying they did not represent the party, and that they should be arrested by security agencies.

Ken Asogwa, the Senior Special Adviser on Media to Usman, said in a statement on Tuesday that the party has no connection with the proposed protest.

The statement read in part, “The attention of the leadership of the Labour Party has been drawn to an invitation circulating in certain quarters regarding a purported protest scheduled to hold tomorrow, Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“This protest is allegedly being organised by some unknown individuals purportedly operating under the banner of the Labour Party.

“We wish to categorically state that the said protest is not sanctioned by the Labour Party.

“The organisers are unknown to the party’s leadership, and the action lacks the approval and backing of the party.

“The public is hereby put on notice that anyone participating in or promoting this protest is doing so without the consent of the Labour Party and should be regarded as an impostor.”

Again, Buhari’s Ex- Aide Attacks Tinubu

0
Lauretta Onochie

Barely few days after criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for wrongly extending the tenure of bashir Adewale Adeniyi as the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Lauretta Onochie, a former aide to late President Muhammadu Buhari has again descended on the president.

Onochie in a post shared on her verified X handle on Wednesday, took a swipe at President Tinubu over his failure to appoint foreign ambassadors for the nation’s foreign missions.

According to her, President Tinubu is running the country like his personal business, wondering whether the president understands that the ambassadors are the ones who relate with other countries on behalf of the nation.

Referencing President Tinubu’s recent visit to St. Lucia, Onochie said Tinubu prefers those countries where he’s “idolized and worshiped” rather than appointing replacement for Nigerian ambassadors abroad.

The former presidential aide described Tinubu as a “strategist who doesn’t know that Nigeria needs Ambassadors to relate with the rest of the world is running Nigeria like a private WhatsApp group.

“He prefers to relate to St. Lucia and Kazakhstan, where he can be idolised and worshipped for the right price.”

Recall that President Tinubu had in 2023 sacked all the Nigerian ambassadors to foreign missions, since then he has not announced replacement for them, as sources in his government blamed paucity of funds for the president’s action.

The magazine had earlier reported that Onochie tackled President Tinubu for extending the tenure of the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, by one year.

Onochie said the extension was done with an ulterior motive. She said it was to prevent the next in rank,  DCG BU Nwafor from ascending the top position.

On July 30, President Tinubu, in a release signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, extended Adeniyi’s tenure by one year.

Adeniyi was billed to retire in August, 2025, after 35 years in Service, having joined the Customs and Excise in August 1990. But President Tinubu extended his tenure, to, according to him, complete the good job he had started. Adeniyi was appointed to the position by Tinubu.

But Onochie, a former Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), slammed Tinubu for, by the extention, deliberately prevented Nwafor, a woman, native of Anambra State, from getting the top job.

DCG Nwafor is billed for retirement from Service in October 2026 when she will be 60 years old.

In a post on X, Onochie reeled out a number of reasons why Tinubu prevented Nwafor from the position. They include her gender, her State of origin, her having no husband or boyfriend in the Presidential  Villa, no Governor’s backing, and more.

Meanwhile, it has been discovered that Nwafor is not the most senior DCG in the NCS, the findings, according to sources had thus put a lie to Onochie’s claim.

At Journalist’s Book Launch, Prominent Nigerians Bemoan Nigeria’s Situation

Ike Abonyi

It was a gathering of egg heads in Abuja on Wednesday, and Nigeria’s Situation was thoroughly x-rayed at the presentation of two books written by renowned Nigerian journalist, Ike Abonyi.

Speaker after speaker took on the political situation in the country from different perspectives, all unanimous that Nigeria is not moving in the right direction.

The chairman of the occasion and renowned banker, Alhaji Mohammad Hayatudeen, kicked off with a stress that  Nigeria could be better than it is as he praised the author for the good job.

The former Ohanaeze President, Chief John Nnia Nwodo catalysed the discussion with his exhaustive paper, titled, How We Get Here? In his paper, he provides a historical look at Nigeria’s past and the steady decay of the political system

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, who was the chief book Presenter, ably represented by the Director General of the PDP Governors Forum, Dr Emmanuel Agbo, praised the Author of the book for putting his thoughts together for posterity.

The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, in his short remarks reiterated his concern for the growing poverty in the land.

One of the books, ‘Wadata Wonders: Memoirs of a Partisan Journalist,’ was titled after the building housing the PDP national secretariat.

Obi’s presence at the event, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, is coming just days after the PDP publicly admitted it was making concerted efforts to bring the former vice-presidential candidate back into its ranks ahead of the 2027 elections.

Although he remained tight-lipped on the matter, Obi’s attendance at an event overwhelmingly populated by PDP leaders may be fueling fresh speculation about the possibility of a political realignment.

Former National Chairman of PDP Prince Uche Secondus was more blunt declaring that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is

steering Nigeria towards liquidation.

The two books were reviewed by a foremost Journalist, former Managing Director of the Guardian Newspaper.

Other personalities that graced the occasion include former Governor of Rivers State Chief Celestine Omehia,  Bala Buhari, serving Senator Austin Akobundu, foremost academia, Prof Udenta Udenta

Ike Abonyi, a former Group Political Editor of THISDAY and pioneer Deputy Managing Director of New Telegraph, served for over four years as Media Adviser to two PDP National Chairmen, an experience detailed in one of the books ‘Wadata Wonders.’

“By The Time I Finish With Gov. Adeleke, He Will Beg For Death” – Osun APC Member, Gafar

0
Dolapo Gafar and Governor Adeleke

By Akinwale Kasali

An alleged member of the Osun State All Progressives Congress, APC, Dolapo Gafar, popular as Governor Ifedolapo, has threatened Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, with thunder and brimstone. He said he would deal with not only the Governor, but his whole family, and even associates. By the time he finishes with Adeleke, he said, the Governor would run at the mere sight of  Government House; the Governor would beg for death.

He did not hide himself. Or face. He did not tell anybody to tell Adeleke. He recorded it, in a video which was posted online.

For well over five minutes, he went on and on.

Adeleke’s offence? For daring to think of defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the APC.

Gafar said he wanted nothing from the Governor. Neither money, nor contract. The only thing that would save the Governor, he said, is to banish every, and any thought of defecting to the APC.

In the video made public by Osun Defender, Gafar who spoke in Yoruba, with a sprinkle of English said in part:

“I don’t need anything from your family, but I can tell you that if you decamp to the APC, within a week, you will get tired of life.”

And as if confirming that he and some people are responsible for any political problems the Governor might be going through, especially, since after the Local Council Election, Gafar added: “What we are showing you now is just a preamble.

“We will make life unbearable for you to the point that you will regret coming to the APC. Even those following you to the APC will regret doing so.

“We will frustrate you to the point that you will beg for death to take you. We will make you weep when you see the Government House. I don’t hide behind the keyboard. You’ve not seen anything.

“We will show you what they call pepper. I’m not talking on behalf of any leader or follower. Whoever wants to align with my idea is free. I’m just waiting  to hear that you have decamped to the APC. We’ve set a trap for you. We will make life unbearable for you to the extent that your party members will seek death as an alternative.

“We will let you know that you are a nobody and I don’t have anything I want from you. The time I needed you, you behaved like an animal.”

Even though Governor Adeleke has issued no response, personally, Gafar, according to reports, has been arrested, and was arraigned before a Magistrate Court Tuesday morning.

His reported arrest and arraignment in Court followed a petition allegedly written by CSP Adefisoye Kazeem and Nurudeen Kareem, Special Adviser to the Governor on Legal matters.

A couple of weeks ago, speculations were strong that the Governor had completed arrangements to decamp from the PDP to the APC. But he has since distanced himself from that speculation and pledged his loyalty to the PDP. What he and the Osun State PDP  decided, however, is that come 2027, they would stand solidly behind President Bola Tinubu’s reelection bid. As for him? He says he would run for the Governorship under the PDP. And would win.

FAAN Speaks On KWAM 1’s Unacceptable Behaviour At Abuja Airport

Why the Licences of two ValueJet’s Pilots were suspended

Fuji Maestro, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal popular as KWAM I,  has been indicted by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, for violating Aviation regulations by trying to take an alcoholic drink into a Commercial Airline, thus disrupting the airline’s operations on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the domestic wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

According to FAAN, his action contradicted the policy of another aviation regulator, NCAA, which punished the two pilots of the airline involved in the incident.

In a statement on Wednesday, FAAN said its preliminary investigation “confirmed that the passenger was scheduled to board the morning flight to Lagos operated by ValueJet Airlines (Flight VK 201).

“During boarding, the passenger attempted to carry an unidentified liquid substance on board despite repeated warnings from Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel and the Flight Captain.

The aviation authority said the airline’s efforts to get KWAM 1 to drop the alcoholic drink before boarding the flight to Lagos failed.

“As boarding continued, an airline security officer asked the passenger to step aside for further clarification. The passenger refused and spilled the contents of the flask on the officer, which turned out to be alcohol. The Flight Captain intervened but faced similar resistance,” FAAN said in the statement by its spokesperson, Obiageli Orah.

In the statement, FAAN suggested it would not be deterred by KWAM 1’s influence and would do a thorough investigation of the incident.

“This matter remains under thorough investigation, and all parties found culpable will be held accountable according to the law,” FAAN said.

It was gathered that a flight attendant allegedly requested that KWAM 1 hands over the flask, but the 68-year-old veteran Musician declined, claiming it contained doctor-prescribed medication.

When he persisted in keeping the flask, the airline crew reportedly asked him to leave the aircraft.

Following this, KWAM 1 allegedly left the plane but stayed close to it, seemingly attempting to halt the plane’s departure.

In a video that went viral on Wednesday, the singer was seen in front of the plane while airport officials engaged him in conversation.

The pilot, however, decided to take off, seemingly endangering the lives of the musician and the airport officials, a decision that warranted the NCAA to sanction the both the Pilot and the co-Pilot.

As the plane taxied, the musician and the airport officials moved out of its way.

FAAN has however reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all passengers, crew, and airport staff.

The agency said any behaviour which compromises operational integrity or breaches aviation safety standards will not be tolerated, irrespective of the status or identity of those involved.

It also reiterated its dedication to upholding the highest professionalism, safety, and regulatory compliance standards across all Nigerian airports.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has suspended the two ValueJet pilots involved in the incident.

According to the NCAA, the pilots’ conduct seriously violated established safety protocols at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

In a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, the agency confirmed it had taken swift enforcement action by suspending the licences of those involved.

The affected Pilots were identified as Oluranti Ogoyi, the Captain, and Ivan Oloba, the first officer.

The aviation regulator stated that preliminary findings indicated the Pilot initiated departure procedures from the assigned bay without securing the required pre-departure clearance.

Tribute: Supreme Court Justices vs Concord: Why I Disobeyed Dr Doyin Abiola

0
Richard Akinnola and Doyin Abiola

By Richard Akinnola

On January 5, 1994, nine Supreme Court Justices instituted a N450 million libel suit against the Weekend Concord published by Concord Press Ltd and owned by Bashorun Abiola.

This was a novel legal move in the annals of Nigeria where most of the Justices of Supreme Court would jointly file libel action against a newspaper.

The Justices were: Mohammed Bello (then Chief Justice), Mohammed Lawal Uwais, Uthman Mohammed, Sylvester Onu, Abubakar Bashir Wali,  Idris Legbo Kutigi, Emmanuel Ogwuegbu, Alfa Belfore and Olajide Olatawura.

The Weekend Concord had published that the Justices were bribed with Mercedes Benz cars by Nigeria’s former dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida shortly before he left office. But the Justices denied this, claiming it was not bribe but official vehicles. But the newspaper said if it was official, why did it bear the personal names of the Justices? These were the legal knots to be untied in the case.

This case was pending at Ikeja High Court, Lagos.

Following the stay of the bail granted to Abiola by the Court of Appeal, Chief G.O.K. Ajayi, SAN,  Abiola’s counsel lodged an appeal at the Supreme Court against such a stay.

But before the appeal could be argued, Chief Ajayi filed another motion before the Supreme Court, asking the Justices who sued Concord, to disqualify themselves from hearing the appeal due to likelihood of bias.

Chief Ajayi’s premise was that since the Justices had libel suits against Concord Press published by Bashorun Abiola, there was a likelihood of bias on the part of the Justices if they heard Abiola’s appeal on the issue of bail.

In view of this objection, the Supreme Court Justices who were part of the plaintiffs in the libel case, withdrew from the appeal.

The implication of this was that all the nine Justices that took Concord to court recused themselves from the case. One of the nine Justices, Justice Olatawura later retired, leaving only three justices that were qualified to sit, leading to a short fall of at least two Justices, since only a minimum of five Justices could sit on a case at the Supreme Court and minimum of seven Justices in a constitutional case like the Abiola’s appeal.

The situation perfectly suited the government. Since the government was not keen in appointing fresh Justices to the Supreme Court, the case became stalled and Abiola continued to languish in jail.

The Abacha junta had amended Section 211(2) of the 1979 constitution on the appointment of Justices of the Supreme court, through the Constitution (Suspension and Modification) Decree No. 107 of 1993, which gave the Provisional Ruling Council(PRC), on the advice of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the power to fill vacant seats at the Supreme court. Since in suited the government for Abiola to remain in detention, it refused to appoint more Justices to the Supreme court.

Meanwhile, the libel case was going on very well at the High court, with Chief Gani Fawehinmi representing Concord.

I recall that in the course of the trial, the Chief Registrar (CR) of the Suprem court had given evidence on behalf of the plaintiffs. During his cross-examination, Gani was at his combative self and counsel to the plaintiffs sought the court’s protection of the witness, saying that as the CR, he deserved some respect from Gani in the course of cross-examination. But Gani countered that he had utmost respect for the CR but in this case, he was not cross-examining the CR but a witness.

“My Lord, as long as that witness is in that witness box, I am not seeing the CR but an ordinary witness that has to be subjected to vigorous cross-examination. When he steps down from the box, I would give him his due respect as the CR but right now, he is an ordinary witness.” The court agreed with Gani.

However, as the case was going on, and with Abiola’s bail appeal stuck at the Supreme court, Dr Doyin Abiola, the Managing Director of Concord and wife of Abiola, was working on an alternative route to break the impasse. She felt that if Concord settled out of court with the Supreme court justices and Chief Ajayi withdrew his application that the justices should not be part of the bail hearing, that Abiola would be granted bail.

As the Judicial Editor of Concord, Dr Abiola and I regularly reviewed the cases, almost on daily basis. So, this afternoon, he buzzed by office intercom at Concord, summoning me to her office.

She told me she wanted an out-of-court settlement and that I should go and discuss with Gani to soften the ground before she de-briefed him. I was shocked. I told her we were winning the case and that the way the trial was going on had been in our favour. She was adamant, insisting that I should go and discuss with Gani. I was also adamant that I would not go, telling her that since she was the one that briefed Gani, she should be the one to break the news to him. I knew Gani would be heartbroken, so l refused to be the purveyor of that bad news. I told Dr Abiola that she was being deceived that Abiola would be granted bail once the case was settled out of court. We argued and argued but she was insistent and I also refused to cave in.

She then got angry and in her thin voice, told me:”Richard, as your MD, I’m ordering you”.

Looking at her straight in the face, I retorted:”Sorry ma, with due respect, I will disobey you because your action would not be in the interest of the publisher”.

Shocked, she shot back:”Richard, o k’oro simi lenu”(Richard, you disobeyed me).

I was adamant and replied:”Yes ma, on this, I am going to disobey you”.

She momentarily looked at me and in utter frustration, said:”Bi eyin Ondo se maa lagidi niyen” (that’s how you Ondo people exhibit stubbornness).

I replied:”You forgot that Gani is also Ondo. So, you would still meet another “alagidi”(stubborn person) in front”.

She could only intone-“kuro l’office me joo”(just leave my office)”.

She eventually wrote Gani to de-brief him and Gani almost went into depression because apart from handling the case pro bono, he was very sure Concord was going to win the case. As I cautioned Dr Doyin, despite the out-of-court settlement, Abiola was never released.

Sleep well, MD.

Ghana Helicopter Crash

By Adesina Soyooye

Nigeria’s neighbor, Ghana is in deep mourning.

The Country’s Minister for Defence, Edward Omane Boama, and its Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, were killed in a Helicopter Crash Wednesday morning,  August 6, 2025.

The Ghanaian Presidency which confirmed the sad incident disclosed that on board the chopper were eight souls made up of five passengers and three crew members. All on board were killed.

It was an Airforce Helicopter which, according to Military sources, disappeared from the radar.

Boamah was appointed Defence Minister by President John Mahama in January. He was, by training, a Medical Doctor and before his appointment as Defence Minister, had been Communications Minister, 2012-2017, during Mahama’s first term in office and, was also before that, Deputy Minister for Enviroment.

The Ministers were headed to Obuasi, Northwest of Accra and took off by 9.00am from Accra.

Also, on board were Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniri Mohammed, and Samuel  Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the ruling party, National Democratic Congress.

All flags in Ghana have been ordered  flown at half-staff.

In response to the tragedy, President Mahama has canceled all his official duties for the day.

There is no word yet as to the cause of the crash.
