YOUR REFORM IS NOT WORKING:
This column always knew it and we’re not ashamed to say that we said so. IMF last week in Lagos proclaimed it. NIGERIA’S ECONOMIC REFORM IS NOT WORKING, the Fund said at the unveiling of the Report on Economic Outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa.

The  report minced no words as it stated plaintively that after about 18 months, there were no meaningful results to show.

Recall that EXPRESSO in its 2nd anniversary review of the Tinubu administration stated that the President had had nothing to report.

The report presented at the Lagos Business School, Lekki, Lagos,  by the IMF Deputy Director, Catherine Patillo, revealed that Nigeria was conspicuously absent among reform success stories where Ivory Coast, Ghana and Zambia were the shining examples.

DIRE INDICATORS:
According to the report, Nigeria’s economy  is performing at 3.19 percent growth rate, well  below Sub-Saharan zone average of 3.6 per cent. In fact, Nigeria is growing at half the pace of the thriving countries.

Macroeconomic imbalances while reducing in most other countries under reference, are worsening in Nigeria.

Instances abound:

Nigeria’s exchange rate regime is the most unstable and her naira among the worst performing currencies. While most countries are experiencing reduced foreign exchange pressures, Nigeria’s local currency depreciates and instability remains a source of concern.

Rising debt service obligations consume substantial portions of revenue thereby, limiting resources available for development.

Inflation remains high at 33.8 per cent, far exceeding Nigeria’s 21 percent target.

IMF SHADES BAYO ONANUGA AND HIS TEAM:
IMF pointedly singled out weak communication strategies as undermining the impact of the reform in Nigeria.

( We don’t need the IMF to tell us: a horde over a dozen-member communication team led by a certain Bayo Onanuga, who seems to know nothing about strategic communications, is a minus in the equation. All they are obsessed with is Igbo hate and relentless attack of their perceived number one enemy, Peter Obi).

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The Fund calls for the rethinking of the reform strategies. It called for greater attention to communication and engagement strategies, as well as devising compensatory measures and rebuilding trust in public institutions.

A NO REFORM, REFORM:
The twin policies of  hurried removal of a so-called fuel subsidy and an unthinking leveling of the naira cannot by any means be described as a reform.

They are at best, far-reaching policy decisions. A national economic reform is made of more rigorous stuff.

There’s neither an arrowhead nor a think-tank leading Tinubu’s so-called reform. There’s no thrust nor timelines and expectations. So there was really no reform in the true sense of it about ab initio.

INEPTITUDE, CORRUPTION, HOLD SWAY:
Poor, inept leadership, corruption and politicking have been the order of the day since Tinubu took over.

Nigeria and Nigerians have been held in thrall since May 29, 2023 when Tinubu took the mantle of office.

Most Nigerians are left roiling in the muck since Tinubu seized power while Bayo Onanuga and his team thrive in lies and propaganda.

Even the basics (like fixing refineries) and the low hanging fruits (cutting waste), have been most difficult for President Tinubu to attain.

THE LILLIPUT SYNDROME:
President Tinubu is neither a statesman nor a great mind. He’s Lilliputian in every respect. But that’s not a handicap by itself. It’s the inability to get giants around him that’s his undoing.

Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck  Jonathan and even military President, Ibrahim Babangida, among others, all managed to seek out some of  Nigeria’s best minds to run the Executive Council.

Tinubu on the other hand, has proved to be the most nepotistic leader Nigeria ever had. His Federal Executive Council is filled with his errand boys and panhandlers.

Most of them are inexperienced people ensconced in positions way above their ken. Let loose on the national treasury, many of the cabinet members and Tinubu’s aides have become like wide-eyed sea pirates on a plundering spree!

Of course, no economic policy will add up in a situation of perverse and maniacal corruption!

BUHARI, EMEFIELE HAVING THE LAST LAUGH:
In just a little over two years, Tinubu has crashed Nigeria’s economy, bringing the populace to their knees.

The late President Mohammadu Buhari, Tinubu’s predecessor said Nigerians would miss him shortly after he had left office. Today, it’s a prophesy come true.

Buhari had no pretensions to being an economic reformer. He only cared deeply about his country and her people. He positioned  the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, an economist and experienced banker, as the arrowhead of the economy with a singular mandate: to ensure that national interest superseded all other economic posturing or influences.

This explains why there was measured removal of the so-called petrol subsidy (and this has been the practice for decades); Naira devaluation was also gradual and graduated in relation to Nigeria’s capacity to produce.

Buhari and Emefiele were conscious of the fact that Nigeria’s economy couldn’t compete in a free-for-all open market economy. Supporting the naira and maintaining subsidy in the petrol pump price weren’t stupid decisions. On the contrary, they were protective cushions for the populace.

REFORM WITHOUT PRODUCTION:
While the Tinubu administration mouths “reform” without requisite production (merely creating paper money), the Buhari administration curbed excessive importation of food items and primary products (like staple foods, toothpick and cooking oils) that any nation should be able to produce.

There were 44 items altogether. By this stricture, Nigerians were pushed to engage in basic production and primary processing capabilities.

For instance through Buhari’s tenure Nigeria’s rice production capacity grew exponentially from less than ten rice mills in 2015 to nearly 70 integrated mill. Most of them were financed through the CBN special lending schemes. The rice value chain grew in leaps.

Under Tinubu, in the last two years, production has regressed all round. Import restrictions have been torn down; toothpicks, table water and even Chinese garri are now found in the supermarkets.

Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) are regretting their massive investments in the rice value chain. Tinubu didn’t only throw the borders open, he gave duty waivers and funded rice importers who are of course, his cronies.

Imported rice is gradually shutting down Nigeria’s fledgling mills.

Instead of learning from Emefiele and adopting some of his positive policies, they deny his contribution and persecute him.

A SURFEIT OF PROPAGANDA AND POLITICS:
The bane of the Tinubu administration are poor leadership, propaganda and petty politics. It’s a regime starkly devoid of any modicum of emotional intelligence or  the nobility of rarefied intellect. There’s a dire absence of light.

Tinubu’s Presidency is filled with plumbers and dog-handlers. There’s a total absence of merit and good sense. It’s the blind leading the deaf mute.

For nearly two years, Nigeria has no ambassadors across the world and her foreign minister is a faceless paperweight. The result is that Nigeria is a dark, black spot among the universe of nations. Attachés are what they are – attachments who are not invited to high-level briefings or state luncheons.

AND THEY SPEAK OF REFORM:
What reform? Nigeria’s woes are numerous and multiplying. Yet all we hear is 2027 reelection. Apparently, they plan to steal the mandate a second time because no Nigerian will vote for a colossal failure of a president!

ADC Slams APC: You Are Insensitive, Campaigning For Tinubu While Nigerians Are Suffering

David Mark - ADC Chairman

The African Democratic Congress ,ADC, has accused the ruling All progressives Congress, APC, of breaching the Electoral Act by campaigning for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, two years before the 2027 elections.

Citing President Tinubu’s campaign billboards, it alleged now litter some parts of the country, the ADC said the action is in violation of the nation’s extant election rules.

The coalition party demanded the immediate removal of the billboards and other campaign materials, including staging rallies promoting the president’s re-election.

In a statement by ADC spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the ruling party should focus on the pressing problems in the country, affecting Nigerians, such as the economic hardship and insecurity instead of campaigning for President Tinubu’s re-election.

The oppoisition party highlighted some pressing problems the APC should focus on tackling, including the high cost of food, transportation, rent which it said is no longer affordable to many Nigerians, wondering whether the ruling party is sensitive to the plight of suffering Nigerians at all.

Abdullahi said many Nigerians are now living in fear, as the spate of killings and kidnapping by criminals have increased tremendously, while the APC fiddles on the re-election of President Tinubu.

The statement in part: “For months now, organs of the APC have staged rallies and unveiled billboards endorsing President Tinubu for a second term from Abuja to Port Harcourt, Minna, Kano, and Akure.

“These stage-managed endorsements blatantly ignore INEC’s reminder that public campaigning is unlawful until 150 days before the election.!

“While the APC chants four more years, food prices have soared, transport has become unaffordable, and many households can no longer pay rent.

“Headline inflation, which stood at 22 percent in 2023, hit a 30-year high of almost 35 percent in December, and remains above 22 percent today.

“The naira has plunged from N461 to over N1,500 against the dollar, crushing savings and suffocating small businesses.

“Petrol, which sold for N185 per litre before subsidy removal, now costs over N1,000  turning basic mobility into a daily nightmare.

“Between April and June, over 3,100 killings were recorded nationwide. These included 1,865 civilians and 122 security personnel.

“Only last Friday, more than 50 people were kidnapped in Sabon Gari Dirmi, Zamfara yet instead of action, our streets are lined with campaign posters.

“In 2023, the national grid collapsed 12 times and has failed multiple times this year. Despite promises, Nigeria still lives in darkness.

“Corruption remains rampant, and the country’s ranking in press freedom has dropped by 10 places within a year. Journalists are under growing pressure,” the APC spokesman said.

Meanwhile, close watchers of politics in the country explained that both the ruling party and opposition are in breach of the Electoral Act, by campaigning ahead the election in 2027.

Adeboye: I Wish To Die On Sunday After Eating Pounded Yam

Respected Man of God and General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye has hinted that his personal prayer to God is to die on Sunday after conducting Service and eating his favourite pounded yam.

The MOG made the remark on Thursday while preaching at the church’s ongoing 2025 Convention titled “The Overcomers” in Ogun state.

This is not the first time that Adeboye will hint about his own death. In March this year, he clocked 83 years old, and watchers of the Pentecostal church said he still look strong to carry on God’s work on earth.

According to him, he will pass on peacefully after preaching at the Sunday Service and eating his favourite pounded yam, saying his passing will be very peaceful without sickness.

“I will die on a Sunday after attending service, eat my beloved pounded yam, and then pass on without any sickness,” Adeboye said.

Adeboye had in 2023 said he wished to die the same way one of his uncle died.

Narrating how his uncle passed, Adeboye explained that his uncle, after a joyous day in church, enjoyed a light breakfast and was anticipating a meal of pounded yam prepared by his wife.

But, when his uncle went to the toilet after his wife had finished pounding the yam, he peacefully passed away without any signs of sickness or discomfort.

Adeboye: “I know somebody will say if we are never sick, how are we going to die and go to heaven?

“An uncle of mine woke up on a thanksgiving Sunday, went to church, danced like everybody else, came home and his wife gave him a light breakfast before preparing the original food which was pounded yam.

“She was already pounding the yam when my uncle decided to go to the toilet. After she finished pounding, she knocked at the door of the toilet. When they opened the door, my uncle was gone; no sickness, no ache, no pain.

“If the Lord tarries His coming, that is how I will go. I will go on a Sunday after a good meal of pounded yam.”

The magazine reports that the renowned cleric  had recently upbraided President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for not rewarding the Super Falcons coaches with the same amount of $100,000 given the players after they won the African Women football championship.

EU Supports IDPs In Benue, Plateau With Additional N450Million

European Union- EU

By Ayodele Oni

Not less than 15,000 individuals are expected to benefit from the European Union’s, (EU) additional N450 million to support Internally Displace Persons, (IDPs) in Benue and Plateau states.

EU announced the release of an additional €250,000 (approximately ₦450 million) in humanitarian assistance to support thousands of internally displaced persons affected by escalating violence in the two states.

Report revealed that this fresh injection of funds will be channeled through the Nigerian Red Cross Society, targeting 2,500 vulnerable households—amounting to about 15,000 individuals—who have been forced to flee their homes over the last four months due to persistent armed attacks.

It was gathered that the support package includes emergency cash transfers, critical household items, basic healthcare, psychosocial services, and improved access to clean water and sanitation.

In addition to immediate relief, the initiative aims to bolster protection mechanisms and run health, hygiene, and safety awareness campaigns—especially for women, children, and those displaced multiple times now living in congested and underserved camps.

According to the report, the humanitarian need is overwhelming. As of July 2025, over 615,000 people remain displaced in Benue State alone, with 65,000 more in Plateau State.

“Many are subsistence farmers cut off from their farmlands during the crucial planting season. Most now shelter in overcrowded camps or informal settlements, struggling with severe shortages of food, potable water, medical care, and security.

“This latest funding is part of the EU’s contribution to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) under the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), aimed at responding swiftly to urgent needs in smaller-scale but severe emergencies.

“In July, the EU also provided €500,000 (approximately ₦886 million) to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to address immediate humanitarian needs of displaced populations in Benue over a six-month period.

“Violence in Benue and Plateau States has continued unabated, driving a protracted protection crisis and deepening humanitarian emergency, with new security threats surfacing weekly.”

The European Union, alongside its member states, remains the largest humanitarian donor globally.

Through its Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO), the EU delivers life-saving assistance to millions of people each year, driven solely by humanitarian needs.

KWAM 1 May Be Prosecuted For Alleged Breach Of Aviation Safety Regulations,  Terrorism Act

KWAM 1

By Akinwale Kasali

There is a possibility that Juju Maestro, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, KWAM 1 could face prosecution  following his unruly behavior at the local wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while trying to board a ValueJet aircraft to Lagos on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. This resulted in sanctions against the Ailine’s Pilots, whose licenses have been temporarily suspended, and the placing of the Musician on a-no-flight list for six months.

But in addition, and to show the seriousness of Kwam 1’s breach, which among others, included standing in front of the Aircraft to stop it from moving, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has petitioned the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, as well as the Inspector General of Police,  requesting the arrest and prosecution of Kwam 1.

NCAA wants a comprehensive criminal investigation and the initiation of appropriate prosecution of the Musician in accordance with the provisions of the Nigeria Civil Aviation regulations (Nig. CARs) 2023 supra and all other applicable laws.

Aside from that, the Director General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, has, in carrying out the instructions of the Minister for Aviation, Festus Keyamo, SAN, directed the Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, to  place the artist on a ‘No-Fly’ List  pending the outcome of official investigations.

Najomo was said to have issued the directives in line with global aviation standards that prioritize the safety of passengers, crew, and airline operations.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, who disclosed this through a statement released and made available to newsmen on Thursday, stressed that the petition is before the IGP and AGF.

According to him, while full details of the incident are still being compiled, the NCAA has emphasized the importance of upholding aviation safety standards and ensuring accountability, regardless of the parties involved.

“The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has officially petitioned the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police to launch a thorough investigation into the incident involving musician, King Wasiu Omogbolahan Olasunkanmi Adewale Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate and domestic airline ValueJet”.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, 5th August 2025, reportedly disrupted standard operational procedures and raised concerns over passenger conduct and airline safety protocols.

According to preliminary reports, during a scheduled ValueJet flight VK201, K1 De Ultimate was allegedly involved in actions that violate the Nigeria Civil Aviation regulations.

Obi Laments JAMB’s Bottlenecks, Urges Compassionate Response

Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to adopt a more transparent and humane approach in handling its services, especially those affecting Nigerian students.

Obi made this appeal after a recent stop in Amawbia, Anambra State, where he encountered a large crowd of students struggling to access basic services at the JAMB office. According to him, many of the students were there to process changes to their course and institution choices—services that are typically handled at JAMB-designated CBT centres.

Peter Obi
Mr Peter Obi

However, he was disheartened to learn that most of the CBT centres had stopped offering the service. Further findings revealed that out of 28 accredited CBT centres in Anambra State, 17 had been blacklisted, with many reportedly not informed of the specific reasons, except that they were “under investigation.”

“The consequences are far-reaching,” Obi noted. “Students are now forced to travel long distances from remote parts of the state, with some making up to five unsuccessful trips to the JAMB office.”

Obi also decried the sharp increase in service costs, stating that a process that normally costs ₦1,500 now attracts fees of up to ₦15,000 at the state office—some of which are unofficial.

He warned that many students are at risk of missing admission opportunities, as several universities have already begun their post-UTME screenings.

“This is a time of economic hardship, growing insecurity, and massive youth unemployment. We should not compound the challenges our young people already face,” he said.

While acknowledging that JAMB may have legitimate reasons for blacklisting certain centres, Obi urged the board to adopt a more compassionate and transparent process. He suggested allowing affected centres to resume operations under strict supervision while investigations continue.

“Education remains the hope of our nation. Bureaucratic bottlenecks must not derail the aspirations of our youths,” he concluded.

Father Dies After Son Was Force-Fed Poison For Stealing Corn

Chief Gbenga Ajibade

By Adesina Soyooye

A loving father collapsed and passed on after he received the news that his son was forced to drink poison by a farm owner for stealing two pieces of corn.

The man who force-fed the young man has been identified

as Chief Gbenga Ajibade, a landlord and farm owner and an otherwise respected man in the community.

According to reports, Ajibade caught the young man in his farm with two pieces of corn which he plucked. An explanation and an apology by the young man that he was hungry, and so, plucked the corn to assuage his hunger cut no ice with Chief Ajibade.

In a viral video which shocked not a few people; he made the young man  kneel down and forced him to drink poison.

The sad incident happened at Itetii Ayo in Ilesa, Osun State.

The video was posted by a Journalist with the  Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Isaac Haastrup.

In the disturbing video, the young man was seen begging for  mercy, and cited hunger for his actions.

He was quickly rushed to Wesley Guild Hospital where the poison he drank was neutralised. He survived and is on his way to full recovery.

But tragedy still hit the father. While he was in the hospital, his father was told that his son had been poisoned for stealing two pieces of corn, he collapsed in shock, and passed on.

Chief Ajibade has, however, been arrested by the Osun State Police Command. The Command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, says investigations are on.

In its reaction, the Ijesa Sport Club which member Ajibade is announced his  suspension pending the outcome of investigation by the Police.

Kenneth Opebiyi, its Spokesperson, in a statement he issued on 7th August, 2025 by its spokesperson, described Adebiyi’s action as unacceptable and alarming.

The statement reads: “The Executive Committee of Ijesa Sports Club wishes to announce the immediate suspension of Chief Gbenga Ajibade, pending the conclusion of investigations by law enforcement agencies regarding his alleged involvement in a serious incident of attempted murder. This action follows allegations that Chief Ajibade attempted to take the life of a fellow citizen over a maize theft accusation.

“During an emergency meeting held on the 6th of August 2025 within the Club premises, the Committee expressed grave concerns over the disturbing scenes portrayed on social media, including Facebook.

“The images depicting the events surrounding this incident are not only alarming but damaging to the reputation of our esteemed Club. The Committee reached a majority decision to suspend Chief Ajibade until the investigation is finalized, after which he will face disciplinary actions from the Club for his unacceptable behaviour.

“The integrity and image of Ijesa Sports Club are of utmost importance to us. We cannot allow any member’s actions to bring disrepute to our organization which has been built on a foundation of respect and community values over the years.

“It is essential for us to act decisively to protect our Club’s reputation, especially in light of the association that outsiders are drawing between Chief Ajibade and Ijesa Sports Club.

“As a respected institution in Ijesaland, Ijesa Sports Club abhors any behavior that undermines the lives and dignity of fellow  citizens. It is our firm position that no individual is above the law, and we stand in solidarity with the values of justice and accountability.”

A Nation Undermined by Its Own Scorecards: The Dangerous Precedent of Post-Exam Result Revisions

0
Abraham Amah
Abraham Amah

By Abraham Amah

In recent months, Nigeria has witnessed a disheartening spectacle: our premier examination bodies—JAMB and WAEC—recalling, reviewing, and re-releasing results, often with unexplained or questionable upgrades. This emerging culture of retroactive grade manipulation is not only scandalous but profoundly injurious to the integrity of our educational system and the moral fabric of our society. It is a creeping academic disorder that threatens to delegitimize hard work, dilute merit, and turn excellence into a negotiable currency.

Examinations, by their very essence, are meant to be objective, final, and trustworthy assessments of knowledge and competence. When institutions like JAMB and WAEC, after having released results to millions of candidates, suddenly initiate arbitrary reviews and issue upgraded scores—without comprehensive public audit or accountability—it raises a critical question: Is this incompetence, corruption, or both?

This practice, whether cloaked in silence or justified by opaque internal processes, is a betrayal of the principles of fairness and justice. What message does it send to the hardworking student who burnt the midnight oil, only to see a previously failed peer suddenly leap into brilliance by virtue of a mysterious review? What comfort is there for schools, parents, and universities who must now second-guess the authenticity of results once regarded as sacrosanct?

These revisions have already sown confusion across admission processes, scholarship evaluations, and academic planning. They render institutions unable to trust what was once the most objective metric of assessment. They make education a theatre of absurdity, where results can be recalled like defective products and reissued like government circulars. This is academic malpractice masquerading as reform.

We must ask: who audits the auditors? Where is the accountability? What internal controls have failed so disastrously that results must be recalled after public release? This is not a clerical error. This is a systemic failure.

The Federal Government must not watch this academic tragedy unfold with folded arms. It is time to declare a State of Emergency in Nigeria’s examination integrity. The Ministry of Education must establish an independent oversight panel to investigate and review all recent result upgrades and the processes that led to them. If these bodies are too compromised or too incompetent to safeguard the sanctity of examinations, then their leadership must give way for credible reformers with the will to restore order and respect to our national testing institutions.

Moreover, there is an urgent need to legislate minimum professional and ethical standards for examination bodies, backed by strict sanctions for institutional recklessness. We must also digitize audit trails and implement real-time tracking of result processing to eliminate the possibility of post-release tampering.

Education is the soul of a nation. When that soul is defiled, what hope remains for the body? If our youth must now doubt the fairness of their academic records, then we are grooming a generation schooled in cynicism rather than scholarship.

Let JAMB and WAEC understand: they are not just custodians of scores—they are guardians of national trust. And if they continue to toy with that trust, the consequences will not only be academic—they will be generational.

“You Are Morally Hollow And Politically Opportunistic” – Obienyem Slams Dr. Onoh Over Comments On Peter Obi

0
Valentine Obienyem and Dr Josef Onoh

By Gideon Njoku

“To the best of my knowledge, Mr Onoh did not even make a phone call, let alone visit once to see his brother-in-law (Ojukwu) or his sister, (Bianca), who tended to him with deep affection”

Mr. Peter Obi’s cerebral and irrepressible Media Aide, Valentine Obienyem, a Lawyer, has, literally, asked Dr Josef Onoh to shut-up, especially, when issues that require men and women with integrity and morals to speak are at stake.

He also rebuked Onoh for  hiding behind late Biafran Leader, Dim Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, his brother-in-law, to mask his own shadows. “You cannot invoke Ojukwu to mask your own shadows”, Obienyem fired at Onoh.

Obienyem was responding to Onoh’s attack on Obi over the latter’s assurance that if elected President, he would serve for only one term in office. Attacking Obi, Onoh said that Obi is not capable of keeping to his words, and cited Obi’s exit from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, after he had  made a firm promise to Ojukwu that he would never exit from the political party.

But Obienyem, in response dismissed Onoh’s position  as“distasteful and desperate” and urged Onoh to gi ahead and name one by one those promises Obi made and broke.

Obienyem: “It is unbefitting for Dr. Onoh to drag Ojukwu’s name into cheap political commentary.” Delving into Obis very close relationship with the revered Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Obienyem said: “Mr. Obi treated Ojukwu with deep affection, visiting him over ten times in a UK hospital.

“Upon Ojukwu’s death, Obi, who had just returned from visiting him and was at the Abuja airport, immediately switched on his phone. Looking pale and sullen, he showed me a message from Ojukwu’s wife, which read: ‘Thank you very much. You have tried your best. He is gone. I am in pains.’

“‘Obi had to take the next available flight to Lagos and returned to London that same morning on Virgin Atlantic, where he managed to secure an economy ticket. He did this out of profound respect for Ojukwu. To the best of my knowledge, Mr. Onoh did not even make a phone call, let alone visit once to see his brother-in-law or his sister who tended to him (Ojukwu) with deep affection.”

Continued Obienyem:  “Even in death, Mr. Obi’s reverence for Ojukwu was unmistakable. The burial accorded Ojukwu, organised under Obi’s leadership, remains one of the best in history.

“While funerals should not ordinarily be used as political yardsticks, the scale, solemnity, and dignity of that ceremony reflected the depth of respect Obi had for him.”

Obienyem lamented what he described as ‘‘the reckless invocation of revered Igbo names like Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu by political opportunists desperate for visibility and favour.”

Comparing how it is in other tribes to what seems to be the normal in Igboland, Obienyem was at pains and pointed out:

“I sincerely doubt if others from other parts of the country would take in vain the name of their dead prominent people in such a disrespectful manner. Why then do some Igbo politicians degrade their own icons this way?”

He then descended on Onoh’s record as a person and said: “This is a man who has been dogged by allegations of academic forgery, ranging from a questionable WAEC certificate to disputed NYSC and University credentials.” He did not, also spare Onoh’s political credentials which he described as inconsistent and rooted in “stomach infrastructure rather than principle.”

His words: “Here is someone who vigorously defended Tinubu in 2023, only to turn against the same administration after failing to secure an appointment. Now, with elections approaching, he is once again signalling his readiness to be used – even against his own people.”

Obienyem described Onoh’s public statements as “abrasive, self-serving, immature, and driven more by ambition than reason.”

As for Mr. Peter Obi’s one-term vow, Obienyem emphasized: “Mr. Obi’s commitment reflects a deep sense of responsible leadership and moral clarity. For someone like Josef Onoh, dogged by controversy and demonstrably lacking a moral compass to question that vow is both ironic and offensive.”

He repeated his challenge to Onoh: “Let him name one promise Obi made and failed to keep. Obi’s record speaks for itself.”

He rubbished the arguments against single-term leadership, and  asserted that the framers of Nigeria’s Constitution were not naïve in prescribing a renewable four-year term.

“Their intent was clear – and within that constitutional framework, a leader still has every moral right to voluntarily commit to serving only one term, especially to achieve noble end such as respect for equity as represented by zoning.”

He ended by dismissing Onoh with a wave of the hand: “In a sane society, character matters. Before one throws stones, they must ensure the platform beneath them is not riddled with rot. Dr. Josef Onoh lacks the moral standing to speak on Mr. Obi – or on any matter requiring sober reflection.”
