Two ECWA Church Pastors Killed By Bandits In Kaduna, Kwara

Rev Anthony Lamba

By Ayodele Oni

The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) is in mourning mood over the death of its two Clerics in the hands of  bandits.

The two separate incidents happened in Kaduna and Kwara States.

In the Kaduna incident, Rev. Anthony Lamba, was abducted by bandits in Southern Kaduna since July.

In a statement signed by Rev. Alari Alari, Chairman of ECWA Kasuwan Magani District Church Council (DCC), Lamba was  kidnapped along with his wife, Christiana Anthony and Danlami Zana while working on their farm on Friday, July 25.

But while his wife was released after  the payment of a five-million Naira ransom, the Cleric was refused release because the bandits requested for the purchase and delivery of a motorcycle to them. As efforts were stll being made to purchase and deliver the motorcycle, the Cleric  reportedly took ill in custody, and died.

The Church expressed grief over the development and in a statement said:  “With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Rev. Anthony Lamba, who was kidnapped on July 25th, 2025, along with his wife.

“While his wife was later released after paying a ransom of ₦5 million, and they later demanded a motorcycle, Rev. Anthony remained in captivity.

“Sadly, while arrangements were being made to deliver the motorcycle, he fell seriously ill and passed away in the camp.

“A memorial service in his honor will be held at his hometown, Kallah, on Sunday, October 19th, 2025.

“Let us continue to pray for the Church of God and the family he left behind,” the statement added.

In a similar incident, according to reports by SaharaReporters  on Thursday, October 2,  terrorists ravaging communities in Kwara State brutally killed Reverend James Audu Issa, an ECWA pastor, despite collecting millions of Naira from his distressed family in ransom.

The Cleric was abducted from Ekati village in the Patigi Local Government Area around August 28, 2025.

His family, Church, and community members struggled for weeks to meet the abductors’ demands in the hope of securing his release.

Sources told Nupeko TV that the gunmen initially demanded N100million for his freedom.

After tense negotiations, the ransom was reduced to N5 million, which was eventually paid by the impoverished community in a desperate attempt to save the Pastor.

However, after receiving the N5 million, the bandits displayed extreme cruelty by demanding an additional N45 million. Before any further negotiations could be made, they killed the Cleric.

Defections: PDP Not In Coma; Focus On Nov Convention- Spokesman

Debo Ologunagba - PDP Publicity Secretary

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is not in coma despite a series of defections from the party, Debo Ologunagba its National Publicity Secretary, has declared.

The PDP spokesman spoke few hours after Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu state defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. The governor had cited the crisis plaguing the PDP and need to bring his people close to Abuja, Nigeria’s Presidency as reason for his action.

Not a few analysts insist that the PDP problem has been worsened by the defections of its high profile members, including state governors who are dumping the party in their numbers.

Before Governor Mbah’s defection on Tuesday, two other governors, Sheriff Obovrewori and Umo Eno had earlier dumped the embattled party amid suggestions in the nation’s political circles that two or more governors are set to defect in a  matter of weeks.

Governor Mbah’s defection has also left the PDP with only 10 governors while the APC now controls 25 states, where governors from the party are in firm control.

Ologunagba, while reacting on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ said the PDP may be down at the moment but not dead, saying the party’s strength rests among Nigerians who still believe in it.

He stressed that the PDP will overcome its current crisis which he blamed on some external forces, who are bent on destroying the major opposition party in the country ahead the 2027 elections.

He explained that the defections are not based on principle but on personal aggrandizement ,inducement and intimidation of its members by the ruling APC to weaken the party.

According to him,  “The PDP is not in coma, it’s not in a vegetative state, yes we have challenges, some of which are external, more damages are the ones within but again, we are working that rope surely towards convention.”

“What we see today, people are not defecting because of policies, programme of ideology. People are defecting because of personal interest, inducement, intimidation and coercion.”

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier in the year said the PDP is a sinking ship, saying he should not be blamed for its current crisis.

Prof. Udenta: Presidency Forcing PDP Govs Defection To APC

0
Peter Mbah - Governor of Enugu State

Prof.  Udenta Udenta says the major source of the defection problem rocking Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, can be linked to the Presidency. The elder statesman pioneer National Secretary of the defunct Alliance for Democracy, AD, made the remark on Channels Television programme, Sunshine Daily on Wednesday.

The remark comes on the heels of the high profile defections that have rocked the opposition PDP in the last few months, including the defection of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC on Tuesday.

Governor Mbah’s defection ended months of speculations about his future in the PDP under which he won the 2023 governorship election.

The members of the governor’s cabinet, including commissioners and Special Advisers had earlier on Monday moved into the APC, a move described as a defining moment in the state which has been under the control of the PDP since the return of Nigeria to constitutional democracy in 1999.

The governor who has since been presented a membership card by the APC National Working Committee, NWC, blamed his defection on the crisis rocking the PDP and the need to take the state to the mainstream of the nation’s politics.

According to Prof. Udenta, the crisis in the PDP cannot be totally divorced from the Presidency which he accused of intimidating and coercing members of the opposition to join APC.

He dismissed the suggestion by Governor Mbah and  some south east leaders that joining the APC, the party in power at the centre will attract development to the region, saying such leaders should take a cue from President Tinubu, who as a lone AD Governor of Lagos state refused to join the ruling PDP at the time, but managed to build his party through conscious efforts, and later won power at the centre.

The magazine magazine reported that Governor Mbah’s defection to the APC comes few months after two other PDP governors, Sheriff Obovrewori of Delta and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom dumped the PDP for the ruling party.

Sources close to the PDP informed that two other governors from the party have perfecetd plans to defect to the APC in few weeks.

Governor Mbah’s defection, according to political analysts, effectively brought to end the 26 years of PDP control of the Coal City, as the state is widely known among Nigerians.

Why I dumped PDP- Mbah

I want to begin by expressing a deep gratitude to God and Ndi Enugu…

For we are indeed at a moment of reflection, gratitude and renewal.

Today, I stand before you, to announce a break from the past, and to share a decision that will shape the road ahead. This concerns our values, how we organize ourselves politically, and how we secure the future of our projects and our people.

Buy vitamins and supplements

I offer my sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to this journey over the past 28 months.

At the top of that list is Ndi Enugu. At a time when confidence in political leaders had almost collapsed, you chose to believe in us.

When I declared that “Tomorrow Is Here,” it struck a chord in your hearts. You put aside long-held skepticism and stood by us. Without that trust, the transformation we see today would never have happened.

Let us pause for a moment and consider what this transformation looks like.

It looks like Smart Green Schools nearing completion and primary healthcare centres in all 260 wards.

It looks like crime down by 80%; Maternal, Under-5 and infant mortality rates reduced by 400 percent.

It looks like a Command and Control Centre with AI-embedded Security Surveillance System and 150 Distress Response Squad vehicles that guarantee safe streets and neighbourhoods.

It looks like water flowing again through new mains and restored supply.

It looks like over 1000 kilometres of paved roads.

It looks like Internally-Generated Revenue up 600%.

It looks like a fully booked International Conference Centre pouring money into our local economy.

It looks like direct flights taking off – with Enugu Air linking us to key cities across Nigeria and beyond.

It looks like 3 million visitors to Enugu by 2026 – with Nigeria’s first zipline, 4 immersive eco-tourist sites.

It looks like commuting in comfortable CNG buses at 5 world-class terminals; and having 260 Farm Estates that bring production to scale.

It looks like Hotel Presidential and Nigergas revamped; and several moribund assets roaring back to life.

Of course, it looks like winning the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Model Green State Award as the Cleanest State in Nigeria.

It looks like Enugu on the national – indeed global – map.

Ndi Enugu, Your trust and support have been the bedrock of our success, and we pledge to honour that by delivering on our election promises.

Our elder statesmen have also demonstrated generosity and foresight.

Many of you had witnessed decades of broken promises. When we approached you, we did not ask for blind loyalty but some faith in our vision.

You gave us that faith. Together, with your vote of confidence, we have achieved remarkable progress.

To my colleagues in the administration, I am grateful for your resilience. We have walked a path that often felt like a marathon without rest. Many of the ideas we put forward were dismissed as unrealistic. Yet you kept pushing the boundaries of what was possible.

Because of your dedication, today we hear applause for Enugu across Nigeria and beyond.

To the Peoples Democratic Party, which provided the platform on which we campaigned and won, I extend deep gratitude. The PDP supported us through a demanding campaign and joined in celebrating the victory.

For nearly 3 decades, the PDP and the people of Enugu walked side by side, united by shared purpose. Together, we built relationships that will always matter to me personally and to this state.

Yet, leadership sometimes demands difficult – even painful – decisions in the service of higher principles and goals. And there always comes a time when everyone must make a bold choice to determine their destiny.

Today, after a long reflection, we have made the decision to leave the PDP and join the All Progressives Congress.

President Tinubu Mourns Prof. Joy Ogwu, Says “She Projected Nigeria’s Image With Clarity”

Professor Joy Ogwu and Bola Tinubu

By Adesina Soyooye

President Bola Tinubu spared no word in mourning Professor Joy Ogwu, and hailed her contributions to Nigeria both at home and abroad.

Professor Ogwu, an accomplished diplomat, polished, passed on in a New York, United States of America Hospital, on Monday due to, allegedly, cancer-related ill-health. She was surrounded by family when she passed.

Ogwu, from Delta State, very patriotic,  accomplished academic, had held a couple of high profile positions on behalf of her beloved Country, Nigeria, including, but not limited to: Director General, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, NIAA, Nigeria’ s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister.  She succeeded Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala as the Minister for Foreign Affairs under President Olusegun Obasanjo when Okonjo-Iweala resigned from the office in protest after Obasanjo, surprisingly, reassigned her from the Ministry of Finance to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Expressing pain and sadness over the passing of Ambassador Ogwu, Tinubu, in a statement Tuesday, signed by Bayo Onanuga, Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, described her as a trailblazer and a diplomat who projected Nigeria’s voice with clarity. He praised Ogwu for her tireless work towards global peace, disarmament and the advancement of women’s rights.

He added that by her passing, “Nigeria has lost a trailblazer who rose to the highest level of her vocation through excellence and hard work.” The President condoled with her family and wished her a peaceful rest.

A former Nigerian Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Usman Sarki, remarked: “Today, we received the sad news of the passing of former Permanent Representative Professor Joy Ogwu.

“It is very sad. She was a fine woman who represented Nigeria to the best of her ability under very difficult  circumstances.

“She was a very decent human being. It is very sad and very unfortunate.”

Professor Joy Uche Angela Ogwu, as pretty as a rose, was married to Dr. Alloy Ogwu, a Medical Doctor who was based in the United States most of the time. The two were so much into each other that until her husband passed a few years ago, they renewed  their wedding vows, every year, in the same Church where they first wedded.

She passed at the age of 79 years.

Yusuph Olaniyonu, Veteran Journalist, Lawyer, and a long-time Media Adviser to former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has lost his beloved wife, Aishat.

The passing of Mrs Olaniyonu was confirmed in a statement signed by the couple’s first son, Oladapo, on behalf of the family.

The statement disclosed that she passed Tuesday morning, October 14, 2025, and would be laid to rest at the Muslim Cemetery, Adigbe, Abeokuta, by 4.00pm, Wednesday. Neither the cause of death nor where she passed  was revealed.

The statement reads in full: “With total submission to the will of Almighty Allah, we want to announce the passing of our beloved mother, wife and sister, Aishat Odunayo Olaniyonu, who passed away this morning, October 14, 2025 (22nd of Rabiul Thaa’ni 1447 AH). We say Alhamdulillah for a life well lived. She was 52 years old.

“We will certainly test you with a touch of fear and famine and loss of property, life, and crops. Give good news to those who patiently endure, who say, when struck by a disaster, ‘Surely to Allah We belong and to him we will all return’. (Q2:Vs.155-156).

“She is survived by her husband, Alhaji Yusuph  Olaniyonu, her children, Oladapo, Oladipo and Oladepo, her aged mother and siblings.

”She will be buried at the Muslim-Muslim Cemetery, Adigbe, Abeokuta, tomorrow (today, Wednesday) evening by 4.00pm.

“Signed Oladapo Olaniyonu”

Recall that Alhaji Olaniyonu, had, a couple of months ago, in a gripping article, narrated how he fell, suddenly, extremely ill, misdiagnosed and lost mobility.

Thanks to his wife, children and very caring bosses, which included Saraki, everything was thrown into flying him out of the country, putting in a high profile hospital,  picking the bills, and getting him on his feet.

Now, just when Olaniyonu, a former Editor at ThisDay Newspapers, got well and gradually, but steadily, went back to his daily routine, his beloved wife passed on.

Super Eagles Fails To Book World World Cup Ticket Despite Win Over Benin Republic, Qualify For Playoffs

The Super Eagles of Nigeria has failed to book a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by the trio of United States of America, Mexico and Canada. However, the Team booked a spot in the Playoffs.

Nigeria kept their World Cup hopes alive with a commanding 4-0 win over Benin in Uyo on Tuesday night, securing a place in the playoffs of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers.

The Super Eagles produced one of their most complete performances of the qualifying campaign, led by an inspired display from Victor Osimhen, who netted a superb hat-trick before Frank Onyeka rounded off the scoring later on.

The Super Eagles started by taking the lead with just three minutes to break the deadlock, with Osimhen firing home from a clever pass by Samuel Chukwueze to give the hosts an early lead.

The Galatasaray striker doubled the advantage midway through the first half, rising highest to head home another Chukwueze delivery.

Despite Benin’s best efforts to find a response, Nigeria remained dominant. The visitors created several half-chances, but goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was sharp and the defensive pairing of Calvin Bassey and Bright Osayi-Samuel kept things tight at the back.

Osimhen completed his hat-trick in the 51st minute with a composed finish to all but seal the result, further underlining why he remains one of Africa’s top strikers. Nigeria continued to push forward, with substitutes Olakunle Olusegun and Terem Moffi adding fresh energy in attack.

Benin, despite trailing heavily, still had a mathematical chance of finishing second but failed to capitalize on their few opportunities. Their frustration was compounded later when Frank Onyeka added a fourth goal in the 90th minute after a brilliant run and cross from Moses Simon.

The result means Nigeria finishes second in Group C and advances to the playoff stage of the CAF qualifiers, keeping alive their dream of booking a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ondo Leaders Of Four Akoko LGs Insist On Dissolution Of LCDAs

0
Ondo State House of Assembly

By Ayodele Oni

Leaders from Akoko area of Ondo state are agitating for the scrapping of the Local Council Development Areas, (LCDA) based on an earlier court judgement which declared them illegal.

The state House of Assembly had passed the Bill creating the 33 LCDAs and signed into Law on the 9th of September, 2023 by the late Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN.

The Akoko area, made up of four local governments had gone to court to challenge the creation as it did not favour the area.

The High Court, presided over by Justice Adegboyega Adebusoye on the 20th day of June 2024, painstakingly considered the pleas and made declarations  favour of the plaintiffs

The court ruled among others ” That the creation of Local Government Areas Law, 2023 purportedly creating 33 LCDAs across the 18 Local Government Areas in Ondo State, signed into Law on 9th September 2023 was not valid in Law.”

Addressing a press conference in Akure on Tuesday, Representatives of Akoko Development Initiatives, chairman, Ibukun Rogbitan and Secretary, Fola Amure, noted that “Sadly, the LCDAs continue to operate, in clear disobedience to the judgement of the court.

“The Governor has taken some provocative actions that are of great concern and worry to us at Akoko Land. The Court made a judgment that was declarative and all reliefs granted therein were clear, straightforward and objective.

“The judgment, if implemented would ensure justice, peace and development in Ondo State, but we do not understand the reluctance of the Governor at obeying it.

“In spite of the promise by the Governor to initiate actions to redress the lopsidedness in the injustice, all the actions from the government have served to delay the progress of the State while sustaining the illegality of working against the decisions of a court of competent jurisdiction in this matter.

“It is illegal to keep on sustaining the LCDA Law, 2023 which was abrogated by the judgment of the Court.b. It is an illegality for the Government of Ondo State under the leadership of Hon. Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to appoint and retain personnel into the structures of the 33 LCDAs, which were dissolved by the judgment.

“All the funds which had been expended on the running of the LCDAs since they were defiantly set up are nugatory, illegal and not backed by Law. The act of expending the money is illegal, unconstitutional and a direct affront to the rule of Law.

“However, the action of the Governor to present the dissolved LCDAS to the visiting Committee of the National Assembly on Constitution amendment, to Ondo State, for recognition left a bitter taste in the mouth of the people because there is no justifiable reason for the Governor to hold Akoko Land and its people in distaste.

“In addition to the peaceful manner we have conducted our grievances, the result of the gubernatorial elections of November 2024 revealed the massive support of the Akoko people for the Governor; hence this seemingly deliberate assault on our peaceful mien is frustrating and beyond understanding.

“We appeal to the Governor to graciously review the situation in the spirit of peaceful co-existence to set the ball rolling to adjust the vexatious distribution of the LCDAs.

“A fresh directive by the Governor should raise a committee to obtain the inputs and interest of the people of the state to create an equitable number of LCDAs across the eighteen Local Government Areas of Ondo State.

“In order to ensure equity and justice for the four Local Government Areas of Akoko in the North Senatorial District of Ondo State, a minimum of eight LCDAs should be created from the four Local Government Areas of Akoko North East, Akoko North West, Akoko South East, and Akoko South West.”
