Shettima Birthday - APC Youth Release Of 59 Inmates

By Ayodele Oni

Some inmates from the Bauchi Correctional Facility, numbering 59, have been released and 59 orphans received financial aid, as part of activities marking the 59th birthday of vice president Kashim Shettima.

The gestures were courtesy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Parliament, North-East.

Speaking during the event in Bauchi on Friday, the Parliament’s Chairman, Kabiru Garba Kobi, said that the gesture symbolises Shettima’s 59 years of life and service to humanity.

“We paid millions of naira to settle fines and compensations for 59 inmates, enabling them to regain freedom.

“We also supported 59 orphans with cash and donated medicines for other prisoners. This is our way of celebrating a leader who has always been committed to the people.”

He described Shettima as a visionary and patriotic leader, whose humility and resilience continue to inspire young Nigerians.

Kobi compared Shettima’s impact on the North-East to that of the late Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, adding that youths across the country are proud of his achievements.

Other speakers at the event, including Imam Umar Yahuza and educationist Dr. Zuwaira Musa, emphasised the importance of supporting orphans and tackling the challenge of out-of-school children in Bauchi State.

Political activist Sabo Muhammad urged the Parliament to replicate the initiative across Bauchi’s zones, while also warning against moves to undermine Shettima’s position ahead of the 2027 elections.

He further encouraged residents to take the ongoing national voters registration seriously, noting that it remains the surest path to enthroning the government of their choice.

The event concluded with prayers for Vice President Shettima, wishing him long life, good health, and greater service to the nation.

One of the freed inmates, Bashir Ahmad, who was earlier fined N30,000, expressed gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries to both the APC Youth Parliament and the Vice President for securing their freedom and offering renewed hope.

The former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has flayed the Nigeria Police Force over the invitation extended to the former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai’s and seven other African Democratic Congress, ADC, leaders

Atiku, a prominent figure within the nascent opposition Coalition platform  said the police summons  represents a growing and  disturbing pattern of political intimidation of opposition forces by the “fidgeting administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The Source reports that the Kaduna State Police Command, had, on Thursday September 4, 2025, asked El-Rufai and seven other members of the ADC Coalition to appear before it on September 8, for questioning.

In the letter of invitation dated September 4, 2025, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department SCIID Uzainu Abdullahi , directed El-Rufai and the others including the Kaduna State Chairman of ADC to appear for interrogation over allegations bordering on  public disturbance, mischief and causing of grievous bodily harm

Others summoned are Bashir Sa’idu , Jafaru Sani ,Ubaidulla Mohammed ( popular.as “30” , Nasiru Maikano , Aminu Abita ,and Rufai Hussaini,( otherwise known as ” Mikiya )

The invitation to El-Rufai and other co-accused came after the State Police authorities halted  a planned party meeting and subsequently   sealing the ADC  Headquarters in the state.

However, in statement on Friday, September 5, 2025, Atiku said the Kaduna incident, as well as others in Katsina,  Kebbi and other States of recent are clear signs of the country’s descent into authoritarianism .

“The summons of Malam Nasir El-Rufai and leaders of the ADC in Kaduna, the brazen attack on former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, and the violent disruption of the Katsina Elders Forum meeting on security reforms, are not isolated incidents .

“They signify a coordinated and dangerous assault on dissenting voices, civic freedom, and the very essence of pluralistic democracy.

“Power is transient. But history will harshly judge those who wield it against the people instead of in their service. Nigeria belongs to us, not just the ruling party ,or single individual” the former Vice President stated .

This is as he insisted that the criminalization of opposition forces and deployment of security agencies against political opponents have the dangerous potentials of threatening and derailing the country’s democratic process.

While expressing fears of the country relapsing into despotism and authoritarianism, Abubakar urged the citizenry to rise in defence of democracy.

The opposition Coalition,  the African Democratic Congress, ADC, on Friday, September 5, 2025, expressed serious concern over the recent clampdown on its leaders across the country.

The party’s outcry is coming against the backdrop of the Kaduna Police Command’s summon of former Governor of Kaduna State  Malam Nasir El-Rufai and seven other leaders for questioning over allegations bordering on breach of public peace, and infliction of grievous bodily harm.

A letter  from the Deputy Commissioner of Police DCP in-charge of Criminal Investigation Department, SCIID, Uzainu Abdullahi  dated September 4,2025, directed El-Rufai and others to report to the  SCIID at the State headquarters on September 8 ,for interrogation.

Before the summon, the State authorities had earlier sealed the Kaduna State headquarters of the ADC ,after halting a planned meeting by stakeholders.

The Kaduna incident came just three days after suspected hired thugs attacked  and violently disrupted the convoy of the immediate past Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami in Kebbi State.

The violent incident, which resulted in injuries to several people and smashing of vehicles’ windshields, also, occurred almost at the same time a meeting of the Katsina Elders Forum was violently dispersed by some persons suspected to be hirelings of the Government.

In a statement by Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC’s spokesperson, on Friday, the Party,  while condemning the spate of harassment and intimidation of its leaders and members, cautioned the Nigeria Police against being used in implementing orchestrated plots to emasculate opposition elements across the country.

The party advised the police and other security agencies to focus their efforts and energies on how to combat  the growing insecurity in parts of the country, rather than dissipating energy  on enforcement of clearly politically motivated actions against the opposition.

While expressing deep concern over recent efforts by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to harass, intimidate and emasculate opposition voices, particularly, ADC leaders , the party warned that such unnecessary crackdown may have some serious and unintended consequences for the country’s democratic process.

According to ADC, it is disheartening to note that while the All Progressive Congress APC-led administration is busy unleashing the Police and other Security Agencies on the ADC leaders, bandits and other criminal elements undermining the country’s security are roaming unchallenged.

The ADC , especially, flayed the summon of El-Rufai and other leaders of the party by the Kaduna State Police Command as an unmitigated assault not just on the individuals concerned, but also the country’s democratic principles.

It expressed deep shock and surprise that the Nigeria Police is fast shedding its name to adorn the gab of an institution that has willingly made itself a ready tool in the hands of the APC-led Federal Government to intimidate and harass opposition  elements.

“We further demand that security agencies arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack on Abubakar Malami’s convoy in Kebbi state ,as well as the violent thugs who disrupted our stakeholders meeting in Kaduna.

“The failure to bring these perpetrators to justice only emboldens further violence.

“In addition, we call for an internal disciplinary process within the police to investigate officers who were present during the incidents but failed to act .

“Those who stood by and allowed political violence to occur should not be wearing the uniform of the Nigerian state.

“We urge the Federal Government to redirect the focus of the Nigerian Police toward their primary duty –protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians, instead of being used as a tool of political manipulation.

“Our party will stand with our leaders and members. We will not be intimidated” part of the ADC statement reads .

President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governors, Lawmakers, Ministers, and Judges, are to benefit from the 114 percent salary increase approved by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

Aside the increment, payment has been backdated to January 1st, 2023.

This is coming despite opposition and criticism,  especially coming from the organized labour, especially given the current economic challenges facing the country.

According to the commission, the review was long overdue as the last adjustment was carried out 16 years ago, in 2007, leading to the enactment of the “Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc.) Amendment Act, 2008.”

RMAFC Chairman, Muhammadu Shehu, represented by Federal Commissioner Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, disclosed this while presenting the reviewed remuneration package report to Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, in Birnin Kebbi.

Shehu explained that the reviewed packages, effective from January 1, 2023, were designed in line with provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He stated that the adjustment considered equity, fairness, risks, responsibilities, and national precedence.

The RMAFC boss emphasized that the review followed extensive consultations.

“On February 1, 2023, the commission held simultaneous public hearings across all six geopolitical zones to gather stakeholders’ input.

“We received memoranda, opinions, and responses to questionnaires before finalizing this report,” he noted.

He further explained that both subjective and objective criteria shaped the review.

“Objective factors included analysis of macroeconomic indicators such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Subjective factors reflected views from the public and professional groups.

“For judicial officers, the commission introduced three new allowances. These include a Professional Development Assistant Allowance, which provides for two law clerks per judge, a Long Service Allowance to reward judges with more than five years on the bench, and a Restricted Lifestyle Allowance to reflect the limitations judges face in active service.”

The commission has, however, urged all 36 state Houses of Assembly to speed up amendments of relevant laws to give legal backing to the new packages.

Obi Says President Tinubu Chooses To Holiday Abroad When Nigerians Need Empathy

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has reacted to President Bola Tinubu’s 10 days annual working leave and current trip to France saying no holiday should be more important than the Nigerian life the president swore to protect.

He stated that at a time when Nigerians need leadership, empathy, and presence, a President should not choose foreign holidays.

Obi criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s frequent travels abroad, describing them as a neglect of pressing national challenges.

In a statement issued on Friday and posted on his Facebook page, Obi said the President’s continued absence from the country at critical times was worrisome.

He maintained that Nigeria required leadership presence and empathy in the face of growing insecurity, hunger and economic hardship.

Obi noted that President Tinubu had embarked on another trip to France for his annual holiday, barely six days after returning from a 15-day foreign engagement.

According to him, the development marks about the President’s tenth visit to France in two years.

He described the trips as insensitive, citing worsening living conditions in Nigeria. Obi claimed that least 79 percent of Nigerians, over 180 million people  are facing food insecurity.

He explained that Nigeria was recently rated the worst country to give birth, and among the worst to live, with the lowest life expectancy globally.

The former Anambra governor expressed concern that during the President’s last trip, more than 50 people were killed in separate attacks in Katsina State, while over 60 others were kidnapped.

He also pointed to Thursday’s boat mishap in Niger State that claimed about 60 lives, arguing that the President should have visited grieving families before departing for another holiday.

He stressed that true leadership meant sacrifice, investment in healthcare and education, lifting citizens out of poverty, and guaranteeing security.

“Any attempt to stop the Convention will be resisted” – Chairman

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, who also serves as Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention Committee, has vowed that any attempt to derail the convention will be resisted.

Reacting to rising tension and threats within the party ahead of its upcoming convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, Fintiri declared that no faction would be allowed to derail the process.

Speaking on the sidelines of convention preparations, the governor emphasized that the unity and survival of the party must come before personal ties.

“I will not place our relationship above this party. Let us not take all our matters to the media—it is becoming too embarrassing,” Fintiri said.

He further added that true party loyalty demands resolving disputes internally rather than engaging in public confrontations.

“If you are a party man, you settle issues within the party. We will not allow indiscipline and blackmail to derail this process,” he added.

Fintiri’s remarks are coming as factions within the party are threatening to sabotage the successful convention of the party due later in the year.

Some factions are protesting the zoning of the presidency to the South while individuals within the party are still aggrieved over their inability to take control.

Ondo State Police Command has detained two personnel of the State Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun for an alleged stealing.

In what looks like a case of a hunter being hunted, the two personnel were arrested for allegedly stealing cocoa pods in Idanre Local Government Area of the State.

The suspects, identified as Ajayi Adebusuyi (45) and Oluwadare Olubodun (42), were reportedly caught red-handed inside a cocoa farm during a routine inspection along Gbalegi Camp, Idanre.

It was gathered that the farm caretaker, Friday Abbah, had set a trap after repeated incidents of cocoa theft in the farm.

The two officers were allegedly apprehended while harvesting pods, which were later recovered as exhibits.

Local residents immediately handed the suspects over to the police at the Idanre Divisional Headquarters.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the arrests followed several complaints by farm managers in the area.

According to him, investigators discovered heaps of empty cocoa pods on the farm, indicating ongoing thefts.

He added that the suspects are now in custody and that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Friday September 5, 2025, joined the growing list of persons and entities, stridently calling for justice, for a pregnant woman and her unborn child both of whom died owing to alleged gross act of negligence by a State-owned medical facility.

At a meeting with the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem John ,the Chairman House Committee on Health, Hon. Moses Essien , issued a marching order for tough disciplinary actions to be  meted out to all the medical personnel involved in the processes that led to the untimely and avoidable death of the pregnant woman woman and her unborn baby.

The state Lawmakers’ position is coming on the heels of the constitution of an investigative committee by the State Governor, Dr Umo Eno, to unravel the actual circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

The Source reports that alleged delays in carrying out an urgent medical intervention by health workers at the Ikot Ekpene General Hospital resulted in the death of the pregnant woman who was said to have been diagnosed with suspected placenta previa.

According to insider sources, one Dr Mfon Thomas ,the first personnel to have attended to the victim, was said to have requested for urgent action and support from colleagues after diagnosing the deceased with placenta previa

However ,  a viral video released  by Ndifreke Amos, a sister of the deceased, claimed that medical personnel at the hospital abandoned the victim who needed urgent caesarean section for her and her unborn child to live. There was no doctor on duty.

According to reports,  there was about a six- hour delay before the needed operation. The delay ultimately led to the death of the pregnant woman and her unborn child.

The 14-member panel which is headed by the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Niger Delta University, Professor Israel Jeremiah, is to determine the immediate and remote circumstances that led to the unfortunate development.

The House Committee Chairman who described the incident as “a preventable tragedy”, which  resulted from a clear case of professional negligence, called on all relevant health authorities in the State including the Health Management Board not to allow the matter to be swept under the carpet.

“The legislators expressed utter dismay over reported shortfall in essential facilities at the Ikot Ekpene General Hospital, despite over N500 million allocation to it in the 2025 appropriation Act.

The Health Committee lamented the near complete absence of essential services such as water and power supply, adequate medical personnel and others at the health facility.

While describing the incident as unfortunate, the State Commissioner for Health, however, vouched for the professional integrity and competence of the health personnel involved.

He assured the House Committee that justice will nevertheless be done, and noted that the panel set up by the Governor to investigate the matter has already started work.

Group Slams Governor Lawal Over Banditry Remarks, Urges Tinubu To Declare State Of Emergency

Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal

By Akinwale Kasali

A Group under the aegis of Zamfara Good Governance Network, ZGGN, has slammed Governor Dauda Lawal of  Zamfara State over his remarks on banditry in the State.

The Group criticised Governor Lawal over a viral video in which he claimed that banditry in the State would end within two months if he had control over security agencies.

The Governor had stated that he knew where the Bandits are, and said the situation would be different if allowed to take charge of the Security Agencies and Security apparatus in the State.

The Governor said that it saddens him that the Security Agencies take orders from Abuja, adding that Banditry will become history in the State if he is given absolute power to take charge.

But condemning his remarks, the Group said it was an insult  to the Nigeria Military and a betrayal of the people of Zamfara.

It further accused Governor Lawal of playing politics with lives after nearly three years in office.

In the undated video that circulated widely days ago, the Governor speaking in Hausa, said he had bought 150 Vehicles for Security Agencies but could not direct their use, stressing that orders and directives come from Abuja, at his own expense

He added that he had access to tracking devices that revealed the daily movements of Bandits, insisting that if he had the authority to command the Security Forces, the menace would end in two months.

Murtala Abdullahi,  President of the Group, reacting to the Governor said the statement was not only reckless, but shameful.

“This is a Governor who campaigned on the promise of ending insecurity in Zamfara and rode on that sentiment to secure his mandate.

“Now, almost three years into his administration, he is telling the world that he can solve the problem in two months if only he had control of security agencies. This is not just laughable, it is an affront to the gallant men and women of our armed forces who continue to make sacrifices in Zamfara”, Abdullahi said.

The Group further accused Governor Lawal of deliberately undermining Federal efforts to tackle banditry in the State, pointing to his own admission that he knows the exact locations of criminal gangs but has not shared such intelligence with the Office of the National Security Adviser, NSA,  the Department of State Services, DSS, or the Military High Command.

“Governor Lawal has openly confessed to knowing where bandits are located and even claimed he can track their movements on his phone. Yet, rather than handing this information to the appropriate authorities, he is sitting on it, while innocent villagers are being massacred and abducted on a daily basis. That is nothing short of complicity,” Abdullahi declared.

He further accused the governor of hypocrisy, noting that while Lawal laments a lack of control over security agencies, he personally moves around the State with a heavily armed convoy, including personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and other Paramilitary outfits.

“Whereas he enjoys full protection with sophisticated equipment and Military-grade vehicles, his comrades in arms are out there killing ordinary citizens. The governor has created for himself a cocoon of safety while failing to protect the very people he swore an oath to defend. His claim that he has no control is belied by the very visible security detail he commands daily within Zamfara,” Abdullahi said.

The ZGGN described the situation as a compromise too grave to ignore, warning that Zamfara could not continue to drift under a Governor it accused of failing to provide leadership in the face of escalating violence.

“With this level of compromise, it is only wise that the President declares a State of Emergency in Zamfara. This administration has failed woefully to deliver on its most basic duty, which is the protection of lives and property. The earlier the President acts, the better for the people of Zamfara who are being killed on a daily basis”, Abdullahi stated.

The group highlighted recent attacks that have left dozens dead and hundreds abducted in local government areas such as Bukkuyum and Kaura Namoda, arguing that the scale of bloodshed had reached intolerable levels.

“It is shameful that instead of providing solutions, the governor is busy issuing excuses. Just in August alone, more than 24 people were killed in Kaura Namoda, 16 injured, and 144 abducted. A week later, 100 villagers were taken from Bukkuyum, with two killed. What Zamfara needs is decisive leadership, not a governor who cries on camera while admitting he has the intelligence to end banditry but chooses not to act”, Abdullahi said.

The ZGGN called on civil society organisations, religious leaders, and community groups to raise their voices in demanding accountability from the governor, warning that silence in the face of repeated attacks would only embolden the criminals.

“Our people cannot continue to be sacrificial lambs on the altar of weak leadership. Governor Lawal must stop hiding behind excuses and start delivering results. If he cannot, then let the federal government step in to take control and rescue Zamfara from total collapse”,Abdullahi concluded.
