Tinubu Revokes Husband-Killer, Maryam Sanda’s Pardon, Convict To Spend Six More years In Jail

Maryam Sanda

By Akinwale Kasali

Maryam Sanda, convicted husband-killer, has had the inexplicable pardon earlier granted her by President Bola Tinubu revoked. Her joy and that of her family members has been cut short.

Most Nigerians rose in anger when the President granted the young woman full pardon after she heartlessly stabbed her equally young husband, Bilyaminu  Bello, to death in 2020.

She was condemned to death by hanging at the Federal High Court, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

Six years in jail after her conviction to death by hanging, her name scandalously surfaced on the list of those granted full pardon on the recommendation of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, headed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN. The list was endorsed by the Council of States, and approved, finally, by President Bola Tinubu.

Hell was let loose, literally, over her pardon with her late husband’s family accusing the President of insensitivity and, the pardon, literally “killing” their son again like a nobody.

The backlash which greeted most of the names on the list which included confirmed criminals forced the President to order a review of the list.

On Wednesday, October 29, a reviewed list was released and Sanda lost her full pardon.

Even though given the crime he committed, her punishment in the review still looks like a slap on the wrist, but it is some consolation to her husband’s family and the shocked members of the public.

In the new list released Sanda death sentence was commuted to 12 years imprisonment. Having served about six years and eight months, Sandas will now serve an extra six years before she smells freedom.

An official gazette released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday confirmed the revocation of her pardon.

Sandas who is in custody at the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, will be released on compassionate grounds after six more years.

It reads:  “Maryam Sanda, whose offence was culpable homicide, sentenced on 27/01/2020 with death by hanging, has served six years and eight months at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Suleja will now serve 12 years based on compassionate grounds, in the best interest of the children and good conduct, embraced a new lifestyle, model prisoner and remorsefulness.”

In the gazette titled “reduced terms”, the explanatory note stressed that the beneficiaries whose names were listed therein were in pursuance of section 175 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“The beneficiaries included 37-year-old Sanda, Harunah Isah (35), Mamman Ibrahim (50), Sanusi Adamu (28), Sadi Musa 20, Sabiyu Aliyu, Halliru Sani (18), and 79 others.”

At a press statement, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) said the presidential pardon earlier released which granted Sanda and others clemency has been reviewed following consultations with the Council of State.

Fagbemi confirmed that the President received  complaints on the earlier list and consequently initiated a due process review.

The statement  reads in part; “It is to be recalled that following consultations with the Council of State, the President received concerns on the recommended list and consequently initiated a due process review. This exercise has been completed and approved by the President. This exercise was to ensure that only persons who met stipulated legal and procedural requirements would benefit from the prerogative of mercy.

“During this final review, few persons earlier recommended were found not to have met the necessary requirements and were accordingly delisted, while in some other cases, sentences were reviewed and reduced to reflect fairness, justice, and the spirit of the exercise.

“This exercise underscores the President’s desire to balance justice with compassion and the belief that justice must not only punish, but also reform and redeem. The review was undertaken with meticulous commitment to due process to reinforce the administration’s broader commitment to justice reform and humane correctional practices in line with international standards.”

Fagbemi also confirmed that President Tinubu has directed the immediate relocation of the Secretariat of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy from the Federal Ministry of Special Duties to the Federal Ministry of Justice.

“To ensure that future exercises meet public expectations and best practices, the President has directed the immediate relocation of the Secretariat of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy from the Federal Ministry of Special Duties to the Federal Ministry of Justice.

“The President has further directed the Attorney-General of the Federation to issue appropriate Guidelines for the Exercise of the Power of Prerogative of Mercy, which includes compulsory consultation with relevant prosecuting agencies.

“This will ensure that only persons who fully meet the stipulated legal and procedural requirements will henceforth benefit from the issuance of instruments of release”, the statement said.

Attack On Senator Akpabio: Family Excommunicates Sister-In-Law

Patience Ibanga Akpabio and Famiily Members

By Adesina Soyooye

The larger family of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has stripped his sister-in-law, Mrs Patience Ibanga Akpabio of all privileges accorded a wife.

The family, after a meeting, excommunicated her from the family.

Her fate is a product of the very serious and scandalous allegations she publicly made against Senator Akpabio which went viral on social media.

She made the allegations which include murder, corruption and infidelity in his marriage via a post on her Facebook page.

The Akpabio larger family accused her of engaging in “satanic behaviours”.

The decision to excommunicate her was reached on Monday, October 27, after a meeting in Ukana Ikot Ntuen in Essien Udim Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The Akpabio Family said the decision to  excommunicate her follows what it called  her “satanic conduct, disparaging comments and unwholesome remarks against the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, his wife, Dr (Mrs) Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, and other members of the family.”

The outcome of the meeting was made public at a press briefing the family held on Monday at Afe Akuku Udo Akpabio, its  ancestral meeting ground in Ukana.

The press conference was led by the Family Head, Chief Ekom Akpabio. He was the one  who spoke on behalf of other senior family members present.

Addressing the Media, the Chief explained that the only choice left for the  family was to take a firm stans after Mrs Patience Ibanga Akpabio continous “ridicule of the family in public” even earlier a traditional injunction warned her to stop making further disparaging statements about the Senate President, his wife, or any member of the Greater Akpabio Family.

Said the Chief: “Regrettably and most unfortunately, she has continued in her tirade, thus ignoring the injunction by the family. This, in itself, has brought the family to public ridicule and shame and is suggestive of a family unable to manage and control its members. This has never happened and should not have happened in the first instance.”

The Akpabio family said it was disappointment that even after assurances from her husband, Barr. Ibanga Akpabio, that she would refrain from such actions, the woman continued her “aspersions and insults” directed at the Senate President, his wife, and the entire Greater Akpabio Family.

“The Greater Akpabio Family has well-known norms of respect, unity, and age-long channels to address grievances. That these norms and channels were ignored is regrettable. Such acts are destructive and an affront to our collective survival and development, while also being repulsive to family and human dignity.”

The Family reaffirmed its unity and commitment to discipline, and  declared that no act capable of bringing its name into disrepute or public opprobrium will be tolerated.

“We strongly denounce the unwarranted and repeated attacks on our esteemed son and pride of our family, President of the Senate, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON. We are immensely proud of his exemplary representation of our family and senatorial district, and his remarkable achievements as the President of the Senate.”

As a consequence, the Greater Akpabio Family announced a public disclaimer on Mrs Patience Ibanga Akpabio, and declared that she “no longer represents nor is recognised as a wife, representative, or member of the family, and therefore stands excommunicated.

“The family hereby warns all members of the public to desist from any dealings with Mrs Patience Ibanga Akpabio as a member of our Greater Akpabio Family. It is sad that she has pushed us to this line of action by her untoward and satanic actions.”

But the family said it remained open to reconciliation if she showed genuine remorse.

“In the event that she has any genuine grievances, apologies or regrets, we request that she reports such to the family hierarchy for a review of our position in line with our customs and traditions.”

Long before this development, Mrs Akpabio was summoned by the apex body of traditional rulers in Annang land, Akwa Ibom State, the Afe Nkuku Annang. She was served a 7-day notice to appear before the body alongside her husband.

But in a recent Facebook post, she wrote, “For all the people you people have killed when you were governor of Akwa Ibom, and those you people have killed now that you are in the Senate, it will not be well with you.”

Tinubu Withdraws Pardon For Convicted Criminals, Relocates Prerogative Of Mercy’s Office

Bowing to public criticisms, President Bola Tinubu has withdrawn the pardon earlier granted to certain persons convicted of serious crimes such as kidnapping, drug-related offences, human trafficking, fraud, unlawful possession of firearms/arms dealing, among others.

Accordingly, their names have been delisted from the list of those granted presidential pardon.

Furthermore, to ensure that future exercises meet public expectations and best practices, the President has directed the immediate relocation of the Secretariat of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy from the Federal Ministry of Special Duties to the Federal Ministry of Justice.

This was as President Tinubu on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, executed the relevant instruments of release to complete the process of formally exercising his constitutional power of prerogative of mercy to grant pardon and clemency to specific individuals who were earlier convicted for various offences.

The development followed consultations with the Council of State and public opinion on the matter, which led the President to have directed a further review of the initially approved list for consideration in furtherance of the President’s discretionary powers under Section 175(1)(&(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

As a result, others who had been hitherto pardoned in the old list had their sentences commuted.

A statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, stated that the action became necessary in view of the seriousness and security implications of some of the offences, the need to be sensitive to the feelings of the victims of the crimes and society in general, the need to boost the morale of law enforcement agencies and adherence to bilateral obligations.

The Presidency in the statement noted that the concept of justice as a three-way traffic for the Accused, the Victim, and the State/Society also guided the review.

The statement said that the approved list of eligible beneficiaries has been transmitted to the Nigerian Correctional Service for implementation in line with the duly signed instruments of release.

President Tinubu also directed the Attorney-General of the Federation to issue appropriate Guidelines for the Exercise of the Power of Prerogative of Mercy, which includes compulsory consultation with relevant prosecuting agencies.

The Presidency said the new arrangement will ensure that only persons who fully meet the stipulated legal and procedural requirements will henceforth benefit from the issuance of instruments of release.

President Tinubu appreciated the constructive feedback and engagement from stakeholders and the general public on the matter and also reaffirmed his administration’s broader commitment to judicial reforms and improving the administration of justice in Nigeria.

Former Petroleum Minister (State), Chief Timipre Sylva, has reacted to report of his involvement in a phantom coup, dismissing the report as handiwork of “desperate and narcissistic politicians plotting to actualise their ambitions in 2027.”

Sylva, who spoke through his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Chief Julius Bokoru maintained that he is not involved any coup as rumoured in some quarters,

Bokoru, in a statement on Wednesday, said those politicians behind the rumour see Sylva as their obstacle.

He said such evil politicians took their desperation to a sickening level following Sylva’s intimidating political presence and credibility, that had continued to expose their dark, self-serving ambitions.

Describing the former governor as an unrepentant and thoroughbred democrat, Bokoru said Sylva had shown unwavering support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration.

He recalled that Sylva recently mobilised the entire structures of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State to unanimously endorese President Tinubu at the APC Bayelsa expanded stakehokders’ meeting

Bokoru, however, admitted that Sylva’s Abuja home was subjected to a raid by individuals beleived to be operatives of the Defence Headquarters saying they inflicted a significant damage on the property.

He said the security operatives that raided Sylva’s house did not provide any reason for their action and confirmed that Sylva and his wife were already out of the country at the time of the raid.

Explaining their absence, Bokoru pointed out that Sylva was in the United Kingdom for a routine medical checks and would soon be on his way to Malaysia to attend a professional conference.

“In the past forty-eight hours, I have been inundated with calls from members of the press, political associates, and concerned individuals regarding a circulating report alleging that His Excellency, Chief Timipre Sylva, has ‘fled’ the country in connection with certain purported matters.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it is true that the residence of His Excellency, Chief Timipre Sylva, was recently subjected to a raid by individuals believed to be operatives of the Defence Headquarters. During the said operation, considerable damage was inflicted upon the property.

“Despite sustained efforts, I have been unable to ascertain the reasons or authorisation for this raid. To the best of my knowledge, the officers involved did not provide any categorical explanation for their actions, either at the time or subsequently.

“It is important to state unequivocally that His Excellency, Chief Timipre Sylva, CON, and his esteemed wife, Her Excellency, Alanyingi Sylva, were both outside the country at the time of the incident.

“As at my last communication with His Excellency, he was engaged in a routine medical check-up in the United Kingdom, after which he was scheduled to proceed to Malaysia to attend a professional conference.

“The next development I was made aware of, regrettably, were reports circulating across social media and other platforms concerning the raid on his residence.

“While the Defence Headquarters has already debunked the swirling rumours of a coup in Nigeria, it is important to state emphatically that Chief Timipre Sylva, CON, has no involvement whatsoever—either in planning or in logistics—with any such plot.

“Chief Sylva is a thoroughbred democrat, whose entire political journey has been defined by his faith in democratic processes and institutions. From the 1990s, when he was first elected into the Old Rivers State House of Assembly, to his tenure as Governor of Bayelsa State, Sylva has achieved every milestone through transparent, democratic engagement and the will of the people.

“His unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a matter of public record. It remains fresh in memory how he mobilized the entire Bayelsa APC structure to unanimously endorse President Tinubu at the APC Bayelsa Expanded Stakeholders’ Meeting.

“These rumours are nothing more than the handiwork of desperate and narcissistic politicians, already consumed by ambitions for 2027, who see Sylva as their last real obstacle—a man whose political presence and credibility continue to expose their dark, self-serving ambitions”

Alleged Coup: Group Denies  Former Gov.  Timipre Sylva’s  Involvement

A group has distanced a past Governor of Baelsa State, Timpre Sylva, from involvement in any coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s Government.

In the past couple of days, Sylva’s name has been thrown around for alleged Involvement in an alleged Coup plot for which 16 military officers have been arrested.

The Defence Headquarters confirms the arrest of the officers but said they were arrested and detained not for any Coup plot but for misconduct which breached Military rules.

However, on October 28, the alleged involvement of Sylva surfaced with an insistence that the former Minister’s homes in both Abuja and Bayelsa, were raided by soldiers and his younger brother, identified as Paga, arrested. Sylva is out of the Country.

The story of Sylva’s involvement was first broken by SaharaReporters. Neither the Federal Government nor the Military  has confirmed any such incident.

However, in a reaction on Wednesday, October 29, a group  which identified itself as Sylva Staunch Supporters dismissed the reports which linked him to the alleged coup plot as false and politically motivated.

In a statement, it questioned the motives behind such publications by SaharaReporter of an alleged coup  despite official military clarification that there was no such thing.

Said the group: “It begs the question: Is SaharaReporters now the official news outlet of the military, or does it have another agenda?

“The persistence in pushing a debunked narrative is becoming increasingly embarrassing.”

The group flaunted Sylva’s record as a loyal member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a staunch and  consistent supporter of President Tinubu’s administration.

“The public deserves accurate and unbiased information. The Media organizations must act responsibly and verify their claims before publication.

“By spreading falsehoods and misinformation, Sahara Reporters is not only damaging reputations but also contributing to the erosion of trust in national institutions.”

The statement did not, however, confirm or deny if soldiers raided Sylva’s homes or not.

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has pulled its weight behind the faction loyal to Babachi Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF as the authentic among the three groups laying claim to the chairmanship of the party in Adamawa state.

There are three persons laying claim to the Chairmanship of the ADC in the state, including Lawal’s ally Sadiq Dasin, and Saidu Komsiri.

The struggle for the control of the party among the three factions had threatened to tear the opposition party apart, except for the prompt intervention of national body pf the ADC which said it recognized Dasin as the authentic chairman in the state.

The party made its position known in a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, who said Dasin will hold the position on interim basis.

Abdullahi warned that the party will not allow any division in the state chapter, as it will not hesitate to discipline anyone or group planning “to jeopardise ongoing efforts to build a strong and truly democratic party” in the country.

He said: “It has come to the notice of the national headquarters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that there appears to be a growing division in the ranks of the party leadership in Adamawa State.”

“It will be recalled that at its meeting of October 8, 2025, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party approved that Interim Executive Committees be set up to manage the affairs of the party in the states for now.

“After due investigations, the party considers the Saturday, October 25, process supervised by the National Vice Chairman for the North East, which produced Barrister Sadiq Dasin as the interim party chairman in Adamawa State, to be in line with the NWC approval and guidelines.

“In view of the foregoing, the party wishes to encourage all party members who have involved themselves in a separate arrangement to have a rethink and follow the path of reconciliation. Similarly, the party encourages the new interim chairman to extend the hand of fellowship to all and address genuine grievances.

“The party would like to restate its commitment to fairness and justice to all members, as well as its readiness to address genuine concerns. The party will, however, not tolerate any act of indiscipline that is likely to jeopardise ongoing efforts to build a strong and truly democratic party.”

Sources informed the magazine that key ADC leaders in the state, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senator Abba Moro among others are solidly behind Dasin.

Alleged Coup: The Truth, According To Sylva’s Aide

Former governor Timipre Sylva did not sponsor any coup detat, his media aide Julius Bokoru, has disclosed. The aide said the former governor is a true democrat, and a staunch supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Bokoru blamed the governor’s political detractors for the recent allegations that he was the sponsor of a reported botched coup plot that led to the arrest of some top military brass.

His rebuttal was contained in a statement, on Wednesday, blaming some politicians in the country who are not comfortable for the rising profile of the former Bayelsa state governor for the allegation.

He stressed that Sylva had recently proved his credential and support for democracy when he mobilized critical stakeholders in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in Bayelsa state to endorse president Tinubu for a second term.

He however confirmed that some security operatives raided the Abuja home of the former governor, saying his principal was out of the country at the time, adding that the reason for the raid has yet to be fathomed.

Part of the statement: “In the past forty-eight hours, I have been inundated with calls from members of the press, political associates, and concerned individuals regarding a circulating report alleging that His Excellency, Chief Timipre Sylva, has ‘fled’ the country in connection with certain purported matters.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it is true that the residence of His Excellency, Chief Timipre Sylva, was recently subjected to a raid by individuals believed to be operatives of the Defence Headquarters. During the said operation, considerable damage was inflicted upon the property.

The magazine reports that some top brass of the military are still being detained over the alleged coup, even though the federal government has denied knowledge of plot by some disgruntled officer to take-over power.

Sylva was a former Minister of State for Petroleum under the late Muhammadu B uhari’s administration.

Alleged Coup Plot: Presidency  Reacts As Military Raids Fmr Gov’s Home, Arrests Brother, Agency’s MD

“We are sticking with the narrative of the Military that there was no aborted Coup” – Presidency

As the rumour of an alleged aborted Coup plot against the Government of President Bola Tinubu continues to grow wings, the Presidency has finally reacted. It said it believes the Military that there was no such thing as an aborted Coup plot.

Recall that the rumour started when it was revealed that about 16 Military Officers, including a Brigadier-General, are in custody over an alleged Coup plot. The story was first broken by SaharaReporters.

Nothing much was thought about it then, but members of the public started adding two and two together, especially, with the sudden cancelation of the October 1 Military Parade to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary by the Federal Government.

The Military was forced, so to say, to confirm the arrest and detention of the officers, and denied  their detention has anything to do with an aborted Coup plot.

Explaining why they were detained, the Director of Defence Information, Brig-Gen Tukur Gusau said: “The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the public that a routine military exercise has resulted in the arrest of sixteen officers over issues of indiscipline and breach of service regulations.

“Investigations have revealed that their grievances stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations”.

But, the sudden removal of three Service Chiefs of the Army, Navy and Airforce, as well as the Chief of Defence Staff. and their immediate replacement added fire to an already burning house. While the Chief of Army Staff was removed from office, he was elevated to the office of the Chief of Defence Staff, meaning that the Army, Navy and Airforce, now have new Service Chiefs.

While Nigerians were still trying to process the situation, a dangerous and confusing angle was introduced on Tuesday, September 27, with the alleged raid, by soldiers, of the homes of the immediate past Minister of State, under the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s Government, Timipere Sylva, at both Abuja and Bayelsa for alleged connection with the alleged aborted Coup. Sylva, a former Governor of Bayelsa State and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was allegedly named by one of the Military officers arrested as a financier of the alleged aborted Coup.

During the raid, Sylva was not at home, but his younger brother Paga Sylva, who serves as his Special Assistant, Domestic Affairs, was, allegedly, arrested.

Sylva, according to reports, was out of the country, preparing to head back home when he heard the news of the arrest of the 16 Military Officers, and so aborted the trip home.

Also, under custody, is a yet-to-be publicly named Managing Director of a South-South based Federal Government Commission who, allegedly, moved a large sum of money to one of Sylva’s bank accounts. Investigators, it is said, want him to explain what the moved large sum of money was meant for.

These stories have put not a few people on edge with questions such as – “Why would Sylva be involved in such a dangerous venture? Is he crazy? What will he be looking for?

While neither the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, nor the Military has said a word since the Tuesday “update”, the Presidency says it stands by what the Military said earlier on – that there was no such thing as an aborted Coup.

Sunday Dare, a Presidential Spokesperson, in a chat with TVC insisted: “We are going to stick with the Military’s narrative that there was no coup  attempt in Nigeria.”
