Theodore Orji Fmr. Abia State Governor Quits PDP

0
Theodore Orji

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

His wife and son, Chinedu, who was a former Speaker of the House of Assembly, had  earlier dumped the PDP

Former Governor of Abia State, Senator Theodore Ahamefule Orji, on Saturday November 15, 2025, announced his resignation as a  member  of the Peoples Democratic party, PDP.

The two-term Senator who represented Abia Central  Senatorial District, in a letter addressed to the Chairman of PDP, Ward 1, in Umuahia North Local Government Area, informed that the decision to quit the party that offered him the platform to serve both Abia State and Nigeria was sequel to wide consultation with family members and political associates.

“I write to formally tender my resignation from the membership of the Peoples Democratic party PDP effective immediately.

“The decision has been taken after a wide consultation with family and associates.

” I appreciate the opportunities and experiences gained during my time as a member of the party .

” Please accept this letter as a formal notice of my withdrawal from the party” the resignation letter reads .

The Source reports that Orji’s resignation from the PDP after those of other former top Abia Government officials and party chieftains in the one year including his son and immediate past Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly Rt Hon Chinedum Orji .

Besides serving as Abia State Governor, and serving as a Senator for eight years respectively, Orji ,also served as the Chief of Staff to former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, his immediate predecessor in office.

The former Abia State Governor had in 2023 announced his retirement from active politics, after serving out his second tenure in the Senate.

Since then, he has maintained a low political profile, including refraining from involvement in any political activities both at the State and National levels

Although no reasons were adduced for his action, however not a few believe that the development may not be unconnected with the festering and debilitating crisis that has engulfed the once political behemouth -the PDP.

Orji’s resignation instructively is coming as the party seeks to reinvent itself with a controversial  National Convention underway in Ibadan .

In a video that was made available online, the actress accused Baba Ijesha of molesting her daughter without consent.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo had convicted Baba Ijesha of indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault and attempted sexual assault.

He was, however, discharged and acquitted of counts one and count six.

He was thereby sentenced to 16 years imprisonment but was to face only 5 years consecutively.

After the  conviction from the court, comedienne, Princess was all joy after Baba Ijesha bagged 16years imprisonment, She shared a video of herself jubiliating.

The issue saw the Nollywood duo of Iyabo Ojo and Yomi Fabiyi at loggerheads as the former supported Princess’ side of the story.

At the same time, the latter took a stand for his colleague.

The allegations led to a messy fight between them.

Wike Versus Navy: Tinubu In A Dilemma Over Minister, Weighs Options

0

By Akinjide Aina, Abuja Bureau Chief

Following the Minister for Federal Capital Territory, FCT and immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike’s messy verbal assault on, and altercation with a young Naval officer, Lt A M Yerima at a disputed construction site in Abuja on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu, this Magazine can authoritatively reveal, has come under immense pressure from the hawks and doves in his kitchen cabinet, as well as some influential retired Military Generals. As the pressure on him mounts, the President is said to be in a serious dilemma over what to do with the controversial Minister without incurring a damaging politcal backlash. President Tinubu is weighing various options as to the best less controversial one to ease out Wike from his FCT Olympian height without disastrous political cost to him ( president).

A highly placed presidency source told this magazine that, to tame Wike’s unsettling brashness and his propensity to huff and puff considered inimical to the public perception of the administration, Tinubu has, long before the intense altercation with the Naval officer, mulled redeployment of the Minister from the FCT Ministry to another Ministry that will not give him the latitude for visibility and influence.

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister
Nyesom Wike: May be removed as FCT Minister.

Though the President is reportedly planning a major cabinet reshuffle that will see Ministers swap Ministries which could seen Wike re-assigned, the former Rivers governor’s spat with Lt. Yerima may have provided ammunition to hawks within the President’s inner circle to push for his outright sack from the cabinet to protect the integrity of the administration. The hawks, the magazine was told, are impressing it upon the President the imperativeness of distancing himself and his administration from Wike’s uncouth behaviour and impunity. They argue that the FCT Minister is attracting to the administration odium and opprobrium and doing more harm than good to the image of the President and must be stopped before it is too late given the President’s 2027 re- election ambition.

Said the source: “The anti- Wike elements in Tinubu’s kitchen cabinet are opposed to giving the FCT Minister a soft landing by redeploying him to another Ministry, rather they want him outrightly sacked from the cabinet to prove to Nigerians that his uncouth behaviour, combative,  aggressive and condescending attitude towards political opponents do not bear the President’s imprimatur.

“The hawks told the President that, given APC virtual takeover of Southern Nigeria’s political spectrum, the political dynamics in the country have changed hence 2027 will be different from 2023 and so, with or without Wike, he will comfortably win Rivers state in 2027.

“They plainly told him that he does not need the embattled Minister to swing the state for him as he did in 2023 or win the FCT and must therefore be dispensed with before he does incalculable damage to his 2027 re- election bid”

The doves on the other hand have reminded President Tinubu that without Wike, as a sitting Rivers Governor thwarting Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s unassailable lead in the state, he ( Tinubu) would have lost in Rivers and the presidential election dragged into a run- off which outcome no one could have predicted.

“The pro- Wike camp in the president’s inner circle are of the view  that the President should not pay Wike’s role in his becoming president with a sack. They insist that his brashness notwithstanding, the Minister remains a political force to be reckoned with and will be needed in 2027. The doves are in essence pleading that Wike be redeployed to another Ministry if he is no longer desired as the FCT Minister following his clash with the Navy”, Aso Villa sources told the magazine.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
President Tinubu: In dilemma over Wike

It has however, been gathered that some of the anti- Wike elements in the Tinubu administration favour the the former Rivers governor’s replacement as FCT Minister with another serving South South Minister. They believe that if reassigned to another Ministry, Wike will voluntarily resign from the government thus fitting into design.

“Don’t forget that he literally begged and lobbied for the FCT job, I can bet you that if President Tinubu reassigns him to another Ministry, he will leave the government because no Ministry will give him the influence, power and prestige the FCT Ministry is giving him; as you can see, he is carrying on as if he is the Lord Manor of Abuja; he is throwing his weight around unchallenged; prancing the space as  the “Supreme-Governor” or “Governor- General” of Abuja and wielding the power of “life and “death” over everyone in the FCT.

“Wike is power drunk, he won’t agree to superintendent any Ministry that will turn him to a sitting duck”, another source familiar with the goings on in the presidency informed the magazine.

In another development,  a competent military source has revealed that some ex- Generals from the three arms of the Armed forces- the Army, Navy and Airforce- are seething with anger over what they see as Wike’s unpardonable disrespect to the military institution.

“A civilian calling a commissioned officer in uniform a fool is something retired Generals are not happy about. They consider it as a taboo, a desecration of military honour, prestige.

“Many are making their displeasure and demand for Wike’s sack known through official channels.

“Read through the former Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Yusuf Buratai’s press release on the Wike- Yerima’s tango and draw a conclusion yourself”, the source said.

Meanwhile, former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Professor Chidi Odinkalu has come down heavily on the FCT Minister, stressing that he was on the wrong side of everything in his encounter with Lt. Yerima. According to  Professor Odinkalu,  “for the record, let me clear:

Nyesom Wike is a Minister of the Federal Republic & an appointee of the President. He is neither a police officer nor a bailiff.

“A lot of people who claim to be lawyers go about this thing with no regard for law.

Wike was plainly on the wrong side of everything: law, common sense, decorum, & ministerial propriety.

The only thing he had on his side was alcohol.

Wike had no right to be where he was. There is no ministerial right or power to enter land in adverse possession without a court order.

“Ideological purists like me may quarrel with it but a lot of people forget that s. 33(2)(a) of the Nigerian constitution grants a right to kill lawfully in defence of property rights & effective possession is an intangible property right.

“Wike was a trespasser using force to enter land in adverse possession & without lawful Court order or warrant. He was on a mission of Ministerial Vigilantism”

Continuing, the Professor of Law stated: “He was lucky to come out without injury or worse.

An officer of less discipline or one who takes Johnnie Walker for breakfast – like Wike – may have been less parsimonious with a projectile. The Shiites in Zaria did a lot less & see what happened to them.

“I am not sure people realize what amount of trouble this puts Wike in. This affects the authority of the president as C-in-C. The officer corps will be looking out for how the C-in-C handles this”

Ikoyi Cemetery: Yet Another Metaphor For Abysmal Lagos

By Steve Osuji

It may seem as if this column is picking on the Lagos State Government, but does any other resident notice that the touted State of Excellence is anything but excellent these days?

Recently, we highlighted a gargantuan investment, Giwa Gardens Waterpark and Resorts which lay waste now partly because of  LASG’s anti-investment tendencies?

Last week, this column stumbled upon another pointer to the current malaise that is Lagos.

One had attended an interment at the Ikoyi Cemetery and it turned out the shock of one’s life. Upon entering the sprawling facility, one was revulsed almost to a convulsion.

This must be the most unsightly and the most ugly cemetery in the world!

This is probably the oldest cemetery in Nigeria as some tombstones’ inscriptions bear 1900.

To think that Ikoyi-Obalende must be among the most prized real estate spaces in Africa.

IKOYI was for decades, the prime residential abode of the British colonialists while Obalende beside it hosts Dodan Barracks, the seat of power during Nigeria’s troubled days of military power.

This cemetery is not just the resting place of eminent personalities of Lagos, it is a swathe of Lagos’ epochs, Nigeria’s history and a tome of colonial records.

Without searching, one could observe marbled inscriptions of scions of Herbert Macaulay, Adeniyi-Jones and a scattering of British colonialists and missionaries, their tombs desecrated and defiled.

As the accompanying pictures reveal, Ikoyi Cemetery is almost the verisimilitude of an evil forest today. Weeds and shrubs have overgrown the very large expanse of land.

Though it’s supposed to be a resting place, anomie reigns supreme and it looks like a picture of Hades.

Every space in between the rows of vaults has been taken up making the entire ground choked and chaotic. Old family marbled vaults have been breached and left open, creating veritable abodes for reptiles.

IKOYI-OBALENDE LCDA SHAME: There must be a method to managing cemeteries, especially such an ancient, sacred one like this.

For one, it can be rid of wild weeds and kept clean, spick and span. Clearing of weeds and planting of flowers cannot be rocket science in 2025 can it?

Most disturbing is that right opposite the Ikoyi Cemetery is the secretariat of the Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA. From the windows of their high-rise offices, officials can see the sordid state of the facility.

Ordinarily, the cemetery ought to be under the care of the LCDA but governance in Nigeria has been turned upside down, particularly in Lagos.

LASG IN SUSPENDED ANIMATION, WHERE’S ALL THE MONEY: Not only are the grassroots governments denied revenue streams, but federal government direct allocations are not allowed to trickle to the last mile.

Lagos no doubt generates the most revenues among states in Nigeria. It is particularly so today with enhanced funds from  fuel subsidy withdrawal.

Since 2019,  the current Lagos state government seems to have lapsed into a state of suspended animation. Hardly anything major has happened in the last six years.

Apart from completing Lagos light rail project which had been on for decades, and the ongoing Lekki-Epe Expressway, no other remarkable work can be recorded to Governor Babajide Sanwoolu’s name.

Big ticket projects like the 4th Mainland Bridge and Lekki Airport, among others, can’t seem to take off.

How many new schools, hospitals, housing estates, and even new roads have been built by Governor Sanwoolu? What great visions and signature initiatives would we ascribe to him? Lagos’ basic amenities have remained as they were left by former governors Babatunde Fashola and Akinwummi Ambode. What shall history record  as the Sanwoolu legacy!

Where are the huge resources accruing to Lagos state? For instance, Lagos got N531.1 billion in 2024 (the highest among states). And by half year 2025, it has already received N464.51 billion, also the highest in the land.

LGAs in Lagos average N2 billion every month with some getting as much as N3 billion this year. Internally generated revenues in Lagos are also the highest to be got anywhere in the country.

Where’s all the money?

Some residents have lived in unpaved streets with uncharted water channels in Lagos state since 1999. It’s an aberration that LGAs are not enabled to fix inner roads anymore. These huge funds are not applied to the various localities. The LGA funds are dissipated by political godfathers. LGAs merely pay salaries.

Potholes are strewn on most roads, hardly any inner roads or streets are fixed. We had lived in Lagos when nearly all the streets were tarred and drainages well channeled.

Lagos has however, deteriorated badly in the last six years.

LAGOS PECULIAR: We all know the peculiar and punishing nature of Lagos’ governance since 1999. It’s bad enough to have a godfather, when he’s the president of the country, that becomes double jeopardy.

With President Bola Tinubu as the godfather in Lagos, the governor is a mere puppet. Being governor of Lagos state must be the ‘rubbishest’ job in the world today. In the same breath, the governor has no leverage or overriding influence over the state’s legislature. How does he function? How can he function?

A supposedly elected governor with nary any authority to envision, execute or express his leadership style, is a voided entity. It is as good as having no governor at all.

Lagos State has indeed, been a nullity since 2019. Fashola and Ambode mustered the resolve (you can say balls) to stamp their authorities. And they have glowing legacies to show for this.

But history shall record the Sanwoolu era as eight years of vacuous emptiness.

The people of Lagos must rise up as one and say, NEVER AGAIN, shall we have this debilitating lame-duck situation in Lagos. They must choose to shun the godfathers at the polls.

It is also hoped that someday, proper accounts shall be given of the humongous funds earned by the state during this period.

FINAL ANALYSIS: If the oldest cemetery in Lagos is so unkempt and derelict, what else is the government (local and state) getting right?

Former Governor Obiano Dies

Willie Obiano: Alive

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

A former Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano is dead.

Obiano, who had been battling cancer-related ill-health which became public after he left office, reportedly died Friday in a London Hospital.

It is not known how, or why, he allegedly ended up in the London Hospital because he had been in Houston, Texas, United States of America which citizen he was since leaving office. It is, also, where he was getting treatment for his ill-health at one of the best Cancer treatment centres.

However, in addition to  cancer, the immediate cause of his death, it is alleged, was attributable to a massive heart failure which he suddenly suffered, apparently, one of the side effects of  cancer.

Obiano was a two-term Governor of Anambra State between 2014 and 2021.

An accomplished Banker, he was an Executive Director  at Fidelity Bank Plc before he got involved in politics  and succeeded Peter Obi as Governor under the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

Born on 8th August 1955 in Aguleri, Anambra State, until his death, he was being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over an alleged laundering of N4 billion. The   Commission first arrested and detained him at the Airport on his way to Houston on the very day he handed over power to his successor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo. He was later granted bail to enable him continue with his treatment in Houston.

It is an allegation he denied till death.

He was married to Ebele, with whom she had children.

PDP Convention: 3 Govs Set To Boycott Event

0
Governor Siminalayi Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers state has joined other major Peoples Democratic Party, PDP leaders who will not attend the National Convention slated for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

It’s not yet certain whether two other PDP Governors, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang of Plateau and Agbu Kefas of Taraba states, respectively will also attend the event, after rumours  that they were planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. .

Ahead the event starting on Saturday, activities are already in top gear as many PDP delegates from across the country have arrived the state.

According to sources, the Rivers state helmsman may have decided to boycott the event alongside his Godfather, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, whose faction secured a judgment from an Abuja High Court, two weeks ago to stop the Convention from taking place this weekend.

The Wike group has secured two court judgments stopping the party from holding the Convention.

But a High Court in Oyo state, has issued an order directing the National Convention to hold.

Many PDP leaders including a former senate President Bukola Saraki has described the Convention as a waste of time due to the counter court judgments  over its propriety.

Saraki said on Thursday that the leaders of the party should focus on reconciling feuding parties, rather than going ahead with the Convention whose outcome could end up being nullified by the courts.

The former Kwara state governor also warned that the situation posed a serious threat not just to the PDP but also to Nigeria’s democracy, saying what’s going on in the party could polarise the party the more. .

“It is clear that going ahead with the National Convention in Ibadan on November 15–16, 2025, will only serve to further fuel the present crisis.

“Therefore, going ahead with the Convention as scheduled is a waste of efforts. It does not have my support,” Saraki said.

PDP: Court Stops National Convention Over Lamido’s Exclusion

0
Sule Lamido

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Friday, ordered the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to put on hold its national convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo state, on Saturday and Sunday.
The court, in the judgement that was delivered by Justice Peter Lifu, equally restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from supervising, monitoring or recognizing the outcome of any convention the party would hold without the inclusion of a former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, as a contestant.
According to the court, evidence before it showed that Lamido was unjustly denied the opportunity to obtain a nomination form to contest for the National Chairmanship position of the party, contrary to both the Constitution and Regulations of the PDP.
It declared that the party was under obligation to create opportunity for its members to serve by putting deliberate measures in place to enable them to realise their aspirations.
As a consequential order, Justice Lifu ordered that the planned convention must be put on hold to allow the plaintiff (Lamido) to obtain the nomination form, mobilise his supporters, and conduct his campaign.

I Have No Plans To Dump PDP – Gov Mutfwang

0
Governor Caleb Mutfwang

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Plateau state Government on Friday November 14, 2025 vehemently rejected claims suggesting that Governor Caleb Mutfwang has perfected plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic party, PDP to the Young Progressive Party YPP.

The Source reports that with the internal crisis rocking the PDP still festering, coupled with the exit of some Governors elected on its platform, speculations have been rife of late, that Mutfwang may soon leave the party.

In the last 24 hours, the social media space has been inundated with reports of the Governor’s arrangements to join the YPP, after several alleged failed attempts to defect to the All Progressive Congress APC.

Governor Mutfwang, according to reports have had his plans to pitch tent with the ruling party at the centre allegedly frustrated by some forces within the party in the state who are said not to be willing to concede its leadership and control to him.

Besides, the issue of an automatic ticket for the Governor is said to be at the  heart of the disagreement between Mutfwang and other major stakeholders of the APC, a development said to have stalled his defection.

But, a statement on Friday from Dr Gyang Bere, the Governor’s media aide while debunking the rumoured defection, blamed the situation on those he described as mischief makers who are out to create uncertainty and anxiety within the system.

According to him, the purveyors of the unfounded defection narratives are propagandists who are interested  in misleading  unsuspecting residents, particularly PDP faithful and members.

Bere insisted that the Governor is majorly concerned about how to deliver on his mandate at the moment and remains a loyal member of the PDP.

However, the media aide informed that should there be any need for a political decision in the future, the Governor will duly carry the people along.

“Governor Mutfwang has not defected to the Young Progressive Party.

“Where and when there is any change in status, be assured that Governor Mutfwang will utilize official and verified communication channels to inform the people of Plateau state, and all well-wishers”,  Bere stated.

This is as he urged the people, especially supporters and members of the PDP to ignore all the false and misleading information about the Governor’s defection.
