Skye Bank: Customers Desert Bank Over Fraud

0

Bank’s Perception Index Drops

By Bayo Bernard

The management of Skye Bank Plc.is currently battling with how to manage allegation that customers’ deposits in the bank are no longer safe, because of a certain syndicate in the Tokunbo Abiru-led bank, involved in fraudulent transfer of money belonging to depositors.

The magazine learned that the issue has sent shock waves among customers of the bank, so much so, that some are already contemplating closing their accounts.

If this happens, financial analysts informed the magazine, it will further compound the numerous problems and scandals that have dogged the bank in the last few years, particularly the controversial resignation of its former Chairman, Tunde Ayeni over mismanagement of depositors funds.

The boardroom battle that ousted Ayeni paved way for the new board under Mohammed Ahmad.

Analysts insist that trust is core to banking. “What this means is that when a customer keeps his money in a bank, he goes back home assured that the money kept in trust will not be tampered with by the custodian, “said Anjorin Kolawole, a banking and financial expert.

But, as it seems, Skye Bank Plc appears to have failed this important test, considering that the bank has now gained notoriety for making money kept in its kitty disappear to the consternation of customers.

Complaints from Skye Bank customers over disappearance of huge sums of money from their accounts have raised serious integrity question for the bank.

“when a bank is no longer safe to keep money, that bank is not qualified” one customer said last week.

While this has been going on for a long time, the management of Skye Bank, the magazine learned has failed to act decisively on the issue, nor tries to rein in the ‘thieving’ employees within its ranks.

Does it mean that the management is not concerned about the effect of such act on the reputation of the bank”? one top banker asked rhetorically last week while reacting to the issue.

Some customers said they had had to swallow the bitter pill of losing their hard earned money without getting any respite from the bank.

But the case of one never-give-up customer has exposed claims by the bank that it has developed potent firewalls against fraudulent practices.

The story of Addul Salam Waheed Abolore, is a touching, pathetic one which no customer is willing to experience from his bank.

His bitter experience with the Abiru-led Skye Bank is instructive, because it portrays the bank as insensitive to customers plight, contrary to claims that its customers are treated like a king.

A struggling business man, Abolore, in spite of the biting economic situation in the country, had managed to open a savings account with the bank after much persuasion from Skye Bank Plc. marketers few years ago.

He opened the said account around 2013, and has been lodging money in the account hoping to use it as capital to expand his business in the future. The savings account number is   1010480043.

Three years after in 2016 something happened that shocked him to his bone marrow.

On June 8, 2016 he was in his home resting after the day’s work when he discovered that N280,000.00( two hundred and eighty thousand naira) has been deducted from his account.  According to him, the said amount was fraudulently transferred in three tranches, N80,000.00, N100,000. 00 and N100,000.00 respectively.

The unauthorized transaction took place in the midnight.

The money according to him was transferred to two Zenith Bank accounts number 1003194422 and 2009475894. Angered by the fact that he never authorized the transaction, he set out to recover his money back.

That same night, he contacted the bank notifying it of the fraud so that a prompt action could be taken. He was troubled the whole night because all that occupied his mind was that somebody somewhere was trying to rob him of his hard earned money.

Yet, he persevered with the thought that he has lost, consoling himself that his Bank will intervene to recover his money from the ‘thieves’.

He was dead wrong. For two months the businessman paraded the bank looking for solutions on how to get the money back, but Skye Bank continued to play dilly dally, until he decided to sue the bank.

the magazine was informed by its sources in the sector that a number of customers have suffered under this racketeering going on in the bank. “There are many customers who have lost millions in the bank. While some of them have simply got tired of trying to get their money back, leaving everything to fate, other victims don’t even know what to do. The cost of seeking legal reprieve is simply not affordable for many customers,” Said Amirat Adefowokan, a legal practitioner.

But in his case, Abolore will not give up without a fight.

According to his statement of claims Abolore said“ he did not orchestrate the transaction………….neither did he “ at any time authorize or instruct anybody to transact on his account , ‘rather the fraudulent transfer took place at midnight” while he was sleeping.

Abolore said he went through hell, as he was being pushed back and forth by Skye Bank, even after lodging official complaint with the bank as directed.

Narrating his ordeal the victim said” in spite of his several efforts and visits to different branches of Skye Bank, the transaction was not reversed,” adding that he was “very really surprised at the unexpected quietness” from Skye Bank for the whole time.

The victim further avers that the indifference shown on the issue by the bank suggest” a deliberate attempt to shield the suspected perpetrators of the crime.”

He may be right. This is not the first time the bank will be accused of condoning fraudulent practices.

In 2013, one Yemi-Aris Olaniran, an employee of the bank was charged for defrauding the Federal Government of N78.52 million.

The magazine learned that, indeed, there exist some employees of the bank who specializes in the act of ‘stealing’ money from customers’ account.

Their modus operandi is however not the same.

While some open different accounts in the bank, through which they siphon customers money, insiders told the magazine that another method is to open accounts in other banks, where the syndicate have collaborators.

Some customers with nasty experience who spoke to the magazine said the issue has become an open wound for Skye Bank and as such must be handled seriously by its management, if not the regulatory authority like the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN must wield the big stick;

But despite several complaints from well-meaning industry players, the bank appears hamstrung or has deliberately refused to take tangible action to deal with the issue decisively.

The implication is that customers could no longer trust the bank to keep their money safe, analysts told the magazine.

Some customers have already abandoned the bank and moved their deposits elsewhere for fear of theft, it was also learned.

The development may not augur well for Skye Bank which is struggling to maintain bottom position among old and new generation banks in the country, according to experts.

The management of the bank must rise up to deal with this menace, according to another financial analyst,  Steven Oriowo, who said more danger looms considering the ripple effects of the allegation on current and prospective customers .

Oriowo explained that once other customers learned of the fraud, they are likely to stop doing business with the bank, apart from this, they are most likely to suggest to others to do the same.

‘Take for instance, a customer who have been robbed by the so called syndicate, he will not only tell friends using the bank of his ordeal, he will also notify family members and acquaintances,” the analyst said.

He stated that most customers that learned about the fraud will most likely take action, including “closing their accounts with such bank.”

Lucas Idigbe, a psychologist told the magazine that there’s the tendency for people to react the same way when money is involved. He described it as a chain effect.

According to him, the reaction that somebody is trying to rob others of their hard earned money can be mutual, in the sense that “the other person who’s yet to be robbed will begin to think that ‘what happened to him’ could also happen to me.”

“The problem can even get worse for the bank under this harsh economic situation facing the country when people are finding it difficult to feed their families.

For somebody to save money at this time, he must have made huge sacrifice and faced a lot of hardship. Now imagine the feeling that the money could be stolen from the bank where you keep it, the immediate reaction will be to do something quickly,” he said.

Top financial analysts told the magazine that the bank has struggled with many controversies in the last few years and that the current one could compound its problems, particularly the bank’s perception index among other variables.

The bank failed to respond to the allegation when it was contacted by the magazine, Rasheed Bolarinwa, spokesman of the bank failed to respond to e-mail sent to him despite his promise to do so.

Popular Nigeria singer, Tiwatope Savage a.k.a. Tiwa Savage has blasted show promoters and organisers for abandoning her after performing at an event in Kenya.

The Mavin Record First Lady took to her twitter handle @TiwaSavage on Monday morning to express her anger with several message broadcast on the manner she was treated.

The 38 year-old mother of one put up an electrifying performance at the launch of Swabri Mohammed a.k.a. Redsan’ fifth Album `Baddest’ at the Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi Kenya at the weekend.

The 37 year-old Redsan is Kenyan regga musician and the most well famous reggae and dancehall artists in East Africa.

The Redsan’s album launch concert featured Jamaican Dance Hall artist Demarco, Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage, as well as Kenya hip hop artist, Khaligraph Jones.

“Checking out of the hotel and full accommodation not paid for, no car to take us to the airport and promoters want to talk trash about artists.

“Funny how everyone is asleep and phones are off after the show but the blow up your phone when they need you for radio and press runs before the show.

“We shall still continue in this thought, because the fans deserved better regardless of what happens behind the scenes,’’ she wrote.

Tiwa however stated that the ill treatment to her by the show promoters would not stop her from loving Kenya. “I love Kenya, always have and always will’’.

Ibrahimovic Calls Self ‘god of Goals’

0

Zlatan Ibrahimovic proclaimed himself the ‘God of Goals’ after scoring for the 500th time in his professional career, Daily Mail reports

The veteran Swedish striker achieved the milestone with an outrageous roundhouse kick volley but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Los Angeles Galaxy losing 5-3 at Toronto on yesterday.

And Ibrahimovic took to Twitter afterwards to celebrate, posting a film poster style graphic that read ‘Zlatan: God of Goals’ along with the caption ‘500’.

“Obviously it’s not good to lose… but I’m happy for Toronto because they’ll be remembered as my 500th victim,” said the 36-year-old on TSN.

Ibrahimovic now has 17 goals in 22 appearances for the Major League Soccer side, whom he joined from Manchester United earlier this year.

In addition, Ibrahimovic scored 18 goals for Malmo, 48 for Ajax, 26 for Juventus, 66 for Inter Milan, 22 for Barcelona, 56 for AC Milan, 156 for Paris Saint-Germain, 29 for United and 62 for Sweden in a glittering career.

In reaching 500 career goals, Ibrahimovic joins Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only active players to have reached that figure in club and international play.

His spectacular goal came with the Galaxy three goals down after first-half strikes by Toronto’s Victor Vazquez Solsona, Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco.

It inspired a comeback by the visitors, with Ibrahimovic’s intervention followed by Ola Kamara and Rolf Feltscher goals.

However, Toronto rallied, with late goals by Jonathan Osorio and Jay Chapman settling the eight-goal thriller in their favour.

The Galaxy remain eighth in the MLS Western Conference standings

FIBA World Cup Qualifiers: NBBF Thanks Nigerians

0

The Nigeria Basketball Federation under the leadership of Musa Kida, has expressed gratitude to basketball fans for coming out in large numbers to support the senior national men’s team, D’Tigers at the ongoing qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup in China.

D’Tigers outclassed their archrival, Senegal, 89-61 to confirm their dominance in the FIBA World Cup series, recording nine straight victories.

Kida told the News Agency of Nigeria after the match at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium on Sunday in Lagos that he was thrilled by the massive support the fans gave to the team.

He added that the crowded sports hall provided the right atmosphere for the sport and would continue to grow under his leadership.

“It’s a great feeling I must confess, the players gave their best and the fans were so supportive, and the spirit in the hall had brought the kind of excitement we wanted.

“It has indeed been an eventful series and hopefully the players and the coaching crew are the true heroes of the sport.

“When we came on board in the NBBF, we promised all stakeholders that their competitions will be staged for fans of the sport to appreciate and enjoy watching their star players here in Nigeria.

“We can only do more for basketball, especially as the women’s team, D’Tigress also prepare to go for the World Cup which comes up in Spain on September 22,’’ Kida said.

Kida told NAN that the NBBF’s intentions when they came on board was to conquer Africa, and also make Nigeria the destination of choice for basketball.

“We want to ensure the sustainability of the sport, we want our players far away to feel connected to the sport at home and contributing their own quota.

“It is also the very first time in the history of Nigeria where we have our women going for the World Cup and the men also going for the World Cup.

“At the local level, we have the grassroots development programmes such as the Total Division One and Two Leagues in operation.

“At the end we want to say proudly that basketball is back and it is back for good in Nigeria,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the next FIBA Men’s World Cup comes up in February 2019, where Nigeria will play three games against Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal and Central Africa Republic.

Senegal with seven victories out of nine hopes to build on its wins to book a spot alongside Nigeria for the World Cup which comes up in China.

Prior to the commencement of the qualifiers in far away China, D’Tigers coach Alex Nwora had said   the  senior national basketball team were focused on beating all contenders at the 2019 FIBA Africa World Cup Qualifiers.

Nigeria have defeated all eight teams in the competition starting with the first window in 2017 where they topped Group F having powerhouses Senegal and Central Africa Republic.

Mali, Rwanda and Ivory Coast  are also contenders for the two tickets to  the World Cup in China next year.

Nwora told  NAN that his  team  have  the capacity to defeat any opponents .

He said, “We are a rock solid team and blessed with abundant  talent, but we cannot celebrate now until we play our final game.

“We can continue to improve on our quality based on the availability of our players who are so desirous to represent their fatherland.

“So, we are not satisfied until we pick the ticket and prepare ourselves for the competition ahead.’’

D’Tigers crushed CAR 114-69 at  the National Stadium in Lagos to register one of the biggest scores  so far in the second round of the qualification series.

Ikenna Ireogbu, who contributed 18 points to the success of D’tigers, says he is happy with his performance and that the team  are  focused on getting Nigeria to play in the World Cup in China.

He said, “I am happy about the results so far but we can only work harder and give our best to the success of the team.

“Although we had little time to train, so far we have struck an understanding and are working towards achieving good results.’’

Senegal showed superiority over  Mali beating them 82-71 to prove their quality and maintain the stability of the team.

Ambode ‘Toast’ Tinubu

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Following rumours that the All Progressives Congress, chieftain, leader and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has decided not to support the second term ambition of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, to seek re-election come 2019, Ambode and Tinubu has played down the situation.

Political observers speculated that Tinubu was inline and has indicated interest to support Jide Sanwo-Olu, who is also vying to become the governor of the Center of Excellence, under the APC platform, at the expense of the incumbent governor, who also happens to be a member of the ruling party.

At an event today, governor Ambode was reportedly asked if he was ‘qualified’ to speak after the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu had addressed the audience.

According to trending tweets, Ambode, when invited to the podium to speak at the event which had many governors and traditional rulers in attendance said: “Actually, I didn’t prepare to come and say anything here… And who am I to speak after the Jagaban has spoken?”

This allegedly drew laughter from the audience. Ambode had been invited to speak immediately after the former governor of Lagos State.

The Lagos governor later tweeted a congratulatory message to the author of the book, Jim Ovia. He wrote: “Congratulations to Jim Ovia on the publication of his new book “Africa; Rise and Shine”. I am certain that the wealth of experience shared will serve as a compass for young entrepreneurs who dare to dream and redefine the African narrative.”

Ovia is the founder of Zenith Bank Plc.

The book was unveiled in Lagos.

On his twitter handle, Ambode tweeted, “Congratulations to Jim Ovia on the publication of his new book “Africa; Rise and Shine”. I am certain that the wealth of experience shared will serve as a compass for young entrepreneurs who dare to dream and redefine the African narrative”.

Customs: Bad Roads, More Revenue

0

By Stephen Ubanna

Chukwukadia Okoro, a Lagos based Clearing A gent, was filled with enthusiasm  when  he joined the  Profession in the early ’90s. This  is because of the ease at which Containerised cargoes and truck laden goods were cleared at the seaport  and  seme joint border post and   goods delivered at the importers’ warehouse. There were no cases of fallen Containers along the Oshodi-Apapa Express way or trucks laden goods along the  Lagos-Seme Express way, thus putting the price of imported within the reach of masses.

But the last three years has been frustrating for Okoro in taking delivery of his  client’s Containers from Apapa and Tin-can Island port or trucks laden goods from Seme, a border Community  , between Nigeria and Republic of Benin. The situation has been very frustrating that the Anambara state born Agent  had lost many of his agents because of incresed  cost of clearing  andinability to deliver cleared goods on schedule due to bad state of the Oshodi-Apapa and Lagos-Seme  roads, forcing him to quit. There  were other frustrated agents like Okoro.

An aggrieved Okoro lamented  that Importers with their clearing agents have  never had it so bad in the last three years as President Muhammed Buhari of the ruling All Progressive  Congress, APC, appears not to be interested in fixing the dilapidated Oshodi-Apapa or the Lagos -Seme Expressways to facilitate the movement of goods and services but interested in the revenue that is coming into  government coffers from non-oil sector.

Hameed Ali
Hameed Ali, CG, NCS

Given an insider information as one plies the  roads daily for his business ,he disclosed that  if Buhari  had made adequate budgetary allocations for the rehabilitation of the dilapidated   seaport and Seme, the busiest International border  roads, as former President Goodluck Jonathan did , the problem of agents in moving their cargoes into clients’ warehouse could have been minimised.

It would be recalled that Babatunde  Fashola, a former Governor of Lagos state on the platform of the defunct  Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, had pleaded with the then President  Jonathan to allow the  state take over the rehabilitation of the bad roads  and later be reimbursed by the Federal government but was turned  down.

Many had expected that Fashola , who incidentally had become the Minister of Works , Power and Housing in the Present Administration to   push for the rehabilitation of the dilapidated  roads  to facilitate the movement of cargoes  but nothing  was said to  have been done about it   , fueling speculation that he may have lost out  in the power play in the  presidency , where Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to the Buhari, wields too much powers and asserts much  influence over the Katsina state born Nigeria President.

Party sources told the Magazine that the influence of Kyari  over the Buhari Administration was very pervading  that he could influence the execution of project proposals in any state of the Federation. It is not surprising why many had expected him to present  the Oshodi Apapa and  the Lagos-Seme  Expressways to the President because of its economic importance to the nation as  billions  of naira of cargoes cleared  from the seaport and the  Seme land border station pass through the roads  annually  as well as the billions of naira generated   by the Hameed Ali, a retired Colonel and Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service,NCS. The  yearly revenue are paid into the Federation Account to be shared by the three tiers of government: FG, state and local governments.

Insiders  told the Magazine that Buhari only knew about the economic importance of the seaports in Lagos or the International Seme border with the mouth watery revenue  rolling into government  coffers monthly. An agent who spoke to the Magazine  on condition of anonymity confirmed that  he  never bothered to ask himself  how the importers were able to take delivery of cargoes from the seaport or the bad Seme road to the importers’ warehouse. The fallout was that price of goods have continue to skyrocket beyound the  reach of the masses. Take the price of a a ”50” kg  foreign  parboiled which dropped significantly  but had suddenly gone up,but blamed on the bad roads.

Political analysts believe that Buhari may be forced to focus attention   to facilitate the bad roas to facilitate  the movement of cargoes  if Kyari, the Chief of Staff makes a case for Julius Berger Construction Company  or any other reputable Construction Company  to be contracted by the government  to take over the contract because of its critical importance to the nation’s economic  growth.

The bad situation of the  Oshodi -Apapa road, particular, the Cocoanut end of the  road to Apapa port  major gate  may have forced Alikor Dangote, President, Dangote Group of Companies, Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA, and OLAM, a major  rice importing firm, to quickly mobilise funds to remove the problem of transporting their cargoes through the seaport by taking over the repair of the dilapidated road.  The  Dangote Construction Company,  which took over the rehabiliation contract of the Apapa  side of the road  was said to have been granted waivers for his imports to recover his  costs.

There are indications in both official and unofficial circles that if these private Companies  which had taken over the repair  of the Apapa road  fail to complete  the project on schedule and  Buhari loses the 2019 general election, it may be another p abandoned multi-million road project in the country. The Magazine gathered that the leadership Association of Nigeria licensed Customs Agents, ANLCA, had piled up pressure on the Dangote Construction  Company to expedite work on the project because of the suffering which aimporters with their agents were going through  in the recent time.

In spite of the dilapidated  state of the Apapa and Lagos-Seme roads which handles  over  60 percent of  the non oil  revenue imports,  the Customs Personnel had  continued to pursue the agents  like slave drivers  to force them topay  appropriate duties  for their clients imports.

This is  evident going by the over N140 billion that was said to have been generated by the  Service last August. That much was confirmed by Joseph Attah, a Deputy Comptroller and the Customs Public Relations Officer. Tincan Island Command, which, for now  bear the brunt of the pains and agonies of the dilapidated Oshodi-Apapa Road was said to have  generated over N32 billion   while Seme , which has a mandate to combat smuggling activities  in the border area was said to have generated  well over N500 million.  The Command could generate that much , despite the fact that many inter-border importers have relocated to the seaports to escape the bad Lagos- Badagry road in taking delivery of their goods because the Command  had blocked all areas of revenue leakage.

Given the fact that Importers  with their Agents are working round the clock to ensure  that the revenue target  set for the Customs, which runs into a trillion of naira this year  are met, Nigerians, from all works of lie, had appealed to Buhari  not to kill the goose lay the golden egg  by removing the shame of the nation:  rehabilitating  the Oshodi-Apapa and Lagos Seme  Expressways . There are indications that  Buhari may take advantage of his re-election bid in the 2019 general election to win the heart of importers with their agents to give  a matching order to Fashola, the minister of Works,Power and Housing to ensure that these two  economic roads  which are fundamental to the movement of cargoes across the border were rehabilitated.

Osun 2018: Too Close To Call as Major Parties Fight Dirty

0

By Uche Mbah

With just a few days to go for Osun elections, there appears to be no clear cut favorites as the major parties are struggling with political baggage that threatened to drown the parties.  Only recently, a governorship debate was organized by Channels Television, a frontline National Television with establishment leanings. The General consensus was that the whole debate was lackluster, and that the All Progressives Congress candidate was generally given undue opportunities, which unfortunately never translated to reasonable points.

The high point of the debate was the absence of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP candidate absence. This was interpreted in two ways. Why some claim the candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, cannot possibly come for the debate because of a subsisting court order restricting him from parading himself as the PDP governorship candidate until the relevant authorities authenticate his credentials, others said he deliberately dodged the debate because it has become a tradition that those who abstain from debates always win, that they usually are confident.

ADEMOLA ADELEKE

Since he declared interest in ruling Osun state, Adeleke has been in the eye of the storm. Immediately, a scandal surfaced on his educational qualification. It was rumored that he did not finish his high school, and never took the secondary school qualifying exam. In fact, he was taken to court but later a high court ruled that the allegation is not substantiated and therefore that he is thereby cleared of the misdemeanor. Before he could settle down to campaign, h was again in court to defend the same issue. This time he was to ld not to parade himself as the governorship candidate of the PDP until the court determines his case. All these were meant to distract him and make sure that he loses credibility and therefore making the party that fielded him to lose the election. Against all odds, he started campaign with his superstar nephew, Davido. But each time he tries, there were usually disruptions by hoodlums firing guns in the air. Verdict: PDP has no strong grip on the elections.

ISIAKA OYETOLA

The APC direct primaries that brought him in have been a source of controversy, and he has been busy trying to placate his opponents. Besides, the backlog of salaries by the incumbent will be a cog in the wheel of his elections. Fortunately, alerts have become the order of the day, and pensions and salaries are being cleared. But his Albatross is the fact that he is the cousin to the National leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu. Already, Tinubu has been seen as the godfather of Southwest, and many stakeholders are not comfortable. Unfortunately, Tinubu has been reported to have goofed by saying that he and Oyetola are richer than Osun state. That had sparked anger and demonstrations in Osun, and this has been regretted by the Asiwaju. And the Lagos crisis with the governor Ambode is a negative advert on Oyetola.

Unfortunately, he is relying on the Federal might to win. The so called Ekiti election is a test case. But if the election will be free and fair, it will be a hard nut to crack by the APC. Verdict: May win through federal might, otherwise the chance is dim.

MOSHOOD ADEOTI

The candidate of the ADP has been a factional breakaway of the APC, after he alleged that everything was geared towards the emergence of Oyetola as the APC candidate. He decamped to ADP for the realization of his ambition. He was secretary to the state government of Rauf Aregbesola, and may have the same baggage that Oyetola has: the concentration of the government on infrastructure rather that salaries and human resource. !2 executive members of APC left with Adeoti, and weakened the power of incumbency of Aregbosola. He is expected to have upsets in Osun west senatorial district, but that appears to be the extent he will go. Verdict: limited impact, but a spoiler for APC.

IYIOLA OMISORE

He is a serial governorship contender, having attempted to rule the state three times. But his alabatross is the alleged link with the death of the Cicero of Esa Oke, late Bola Ige. That will always hunt him. He was even asked the question, “who killed Bola Ige?” by the moderator of the governorship debate, Sheun Akinbiloye of Channels. He was very uncomfortable answering the question.

The politician from Ife dumped PDP to join SDP out of fear that he was not going to get the ticket of his former party. His entrance into SDP was under controversial circumstances. Verdict: Although he has a grip in Ife and his senatorial district, he is not likely to win.

FATAI AKINBADE

This is a party that might spring a surprise in the September 22 elections if well managed. Fatai served the Osun State government, for over 16 years under three military administrators.  He also worked under a civilian governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, whom he served as Secretary of the state government under his tenure in 2003. He was the leader of the party in Iwo constituency. His choice of Folahinmi Oloyede is a boost to his candidacy, as she is a darling of the civil service based on her activism against Aregbesola that cost her her Job.Verdict: Possible emergence, all things being equal.

Conclusion,: the result appears to be too close to call-unless APC unleashes federal might to influence the elections, which is highly likely.

Fayose: The Contraband Governor

0

By Oji Odu

Will outgoing governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose’s alleged plans to flee the country be a repeat of the former Minister of Transport “Umaru Dikko Saga”, when the Honourable Minister was deported from London where he fled to via a crate meant for goods? Is Fayose really trying to escape the country? If so, is it possible he will do such in a goods container or crate meant for exporting Nigerian goods? These are some of the daunting posers following recent letter by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) to ensure that the governor does not escape the country under their watch.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had written to the Nigerian Customs to monitor and arrest the governor  Fayose anytime he wanted to run away from the country.

In a statement, the anti corruption-agency urged Customs to place Fayose on its watch list, while accusing him of money laundering, abuse of office and other social political vices.

“The under listed person is under investigation in connection with the above mentioned offences and there is a reasonable suspicion suggesting that he may likely leave the country either through the land borders, airports or seaports in order to evade investigation.

“Hence, you are kindly requested to watch-list him and arrest him.You are further requested to contact the commission through the provided contact details if sighted”.

Why should the EFCC take such step when Governor Fayose had told the anti-graft agency that he would submit himself to the commission immediately he handed over to the next governor Fayemi on October 16, 2018?

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State had in a letter dated September 10, 2018 written the EFCC, and addressed to the Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, told the agency to expect him as soon as his tenure expires on Tuesday, October 16, 2018.

In the letter which was personally signed by the him, he told the anti-graft agency of his decision to make himself available at its office “to clarify issue(s) or answer questions on issues within my knowledge.”

In the letter, Fayose said his desire to submit to the commission was hinged “on several and serial actions of your commission for some time now, including but not limited to freezing of my accounts and attempts to secure temporary forfeiture of my properties.”

These, he said were “indicative of the commission’s desire to have me clarify some issues or answer some questions but for the immunity I enjoy under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution as the sitting governor of Ekiti State.

“I wish to inform you that my term of office pursuant to which I enjoy immunity against investigation and prosecution under the above provision shall lapse by effluxion of time on Monday, 15th October, 2018. As a responsible citizen of our great country, who believes in the rule of law, I wish to inform you of my decision to make myself available in your office on Tuesday, 16th October 2018 at 1pm to clarify issues or answer questions within my knowledge. Kindly confirm the suitability of the above date or indicate by return, the commission’s convenient date.” If this is so, why did the EFCC embark upon such directive?

Responding to the governor Fayose’s letter, EFCC in a letter dated September 14, 2018 and signed by its Director of Operations, Umar Abba Mohammed, on behalf of the Acting Director, Ibrahim Magu, said it was delighted by the willingness of the governor to present himself voluntarily but would also be glad to receive him earlier than October 16.

“I refer to your letter dated September 10,2018 relative above captioned subject. I appreciate your sense of duty and responsibility as a law abiding citizen who wishes to submit himself voluntarily to the due process of the law, more so as your immunity as a governor shall soon come to an end.

“In view of the above and your request to make yourself available on October 16,2018, to make clarifications on ongoing investigations that affect you, we look forward to receiving you even earlier than October 16, 2018. In this regard, we shall be willing to receive you on Thursday September 20, 2018 without prejudice to your immunity under Section 308 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

“Please, accept the assurances of the Acting Executive Chairman’s highest regards,” MohAmmed wrote.

Recall the EFCC had accused Fayose of collecting huge sum of money from the Presidency for the prosecution of his governorship bid and diverted part to his private firms and associates.

The outgoing Governor was  allegedly ferried by a former Defence minister under president Jonathan to the Akure Airport and transported by land thereafter to a bank vault in Ado Ekiti.

Although EFCC subsequently trailed part of the money to associates and companies said to be linked to the governor, a judge blocked the agency, citing Fayose’s immunity.

In a chat with Deji Olatunji, a political analyst, he regretted that the Buhari administration is full of people whose behaviour and utterances can best be described as pure comedy.  “What has Customs got to do with Fayose running away from the country? Are they afraid he might flee in an export container or crate like Umaru Dikko? Why not include the Police, Army, Navy, Air Force, Vigilante groups et cetera?

“ Although I do not think that the Fayose I know is so cowardly to bring himself so low, I also have doubts of the Ekiti outgoing governor because of the many controversies following him. After all, some huge framed men flee disguised like women,” he said.

For Umana Simon, he sees the federal might at work. “ You know the outgoing governor had been a bone on President Buhari’s throat. I think the secret powerful hands are at work to deal with him,

“ We also cannot forget the face-off with incoming Governor Fayemi who has federal might behind him, and has been spitting fire against Fayose, especially after winning the Ekiti state gubernatorial election,” he said.

Will Fayose honourably present himself to be grilled by the EFCC after handing over on October 16, 2018, or will he flee the country to avoid prosecution by the anti-graft agency howbeit either in a crate or dressed like a woman? Nigerians are anxiously waiting with the October date very close.

Adeosun, Bichi: Buhari Strategises for 2019 Against All Odds

0

With 2019 election just months away, President Muhammadu Buhari is positioning himself to win by any means possible, against the groundswell opposition unprecedented since the 2015 presidential elections. Several things happened within the week that belies his insistence-or desperation-on being returned as the president come February 2019.Already, he is being forced to take decisions that ordinarily he is not expected to take.

The sacking of the Department of State services, DSS boss, Lawan Daura, has been a single major blow to that ambition, according to general opinion. He was allegedly meant to be the arrowhead for returning the president come 2019, but he was sacked in circumstances he could not have helped. There were indications that he had expected suspension of the chief spy by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo till he returned from his “consultative” trip to London.By the time he came back, the acting Director, Mathew Seiyefa, had settled in and had instituted a wide range of reforms. This magazine reported that Seiyefa, being due for retirement before the end of the year, will not be confirmed. Initially, the Minister for interior, General Rahman Dambazau, was allegedly tipped for the position but there was said to be a groundswell of opposition from the Agency, due mainly to inter agency rivalry. As usual, the presidency deferred to the sacked DG to appoint his replacement, even though his personal preference4 was said to have been Dambazau.

This is not the first time this is happening in the presidency. When Babachir Lawal was removed due to international pressures, he was said to have been allowed to nominate his own replacement, and he was said to have nominated his own cousin, Boss Mustapha. So Daura, according to sources, nominated Yusuf Bichi as replacement. This places the agency right back into the hands of Lawan Daura.

Prior to the appointments, pressures continued to mount on the president from the international community for Buhari to either throw in the towel or , at least, ensure a free and fair election. And the big  four, of which Former president Olusegun Obasanjo happens to be the most senior in Military hierarchy, continue to push on the international front. Sources indicate that pressures from Britain may have asked for the sack of Kemi Adeosun, who is a British citizen. It was said that British Prime Minister Theresa May was not impressed by the fact that the Presidency was shielding her. The issue was complicated by the fact that Asiwaju Tinubu, who was sidetracked in her appointment, also wassaid to be putting on pressures for her sack. And it was said the Obasanjo, on whose recommendation she was allegedly employed when things were still smooth between Buhari and himself, does not have any reason to ask for any favour from Buhari at this time.In fact, this magazine gathered that a delegation led by a retired General was sent to Abeokuta to see Obasanjo. Top on the Agenda was to prevail on Obasanjo to soft-pedal in his international campaign against the APC government. Secondly, they were said to be there to seek his opinion on the Adeosun issue. But it was gathered that Obasanjo, who was in audience with some people said he will not accept any private discussion with the emissaries, insisting that the issue must be discussed in the presence of his visitors. After some time, they were said to have left without achieving their goal. A visibly angry Buhari was said to have decided on the sack of Adeosun. He also decided that he must wade through the elections even if to prove a point. First, absolutely loyal people must be put in strategic positions. His niece, Amina Zachary, already occupies the position of Director of Operations in INEC. All security chiefs are all his loyalists, except DSS. He needed to also change the Security Printing and Minting boss, since he is also meant to print the ballot papers. For this, he approved the appointment of  Abbas Umar Massaanawa as their new boss. He also approved the appointments of Abubakar Sule Minjibir, Tunji Kazeem and Chris Orewa as Executives Directors of the company.

Having sorted things out, he then gave instructions that Kemi Adeosun, the Minister of Finance should resign her position with immediate effect. This was conveyed to Adeosun by the Chief of staff, Abba Kyari, who denied her entrance to last Wednesday Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting. She was very rattled. She tried to use all her contacts with the president to plead on her behalf. When that failed, she was said to have reluctantly written her resignation letter. But she did not submit it immediately. However, her resignation was leaked to the social media when she came to the office and directed all agencies to prepare their hand over notes that she is resigning. Hence she was busy on Thursday with preparation for her hand over.

Immediately he resignation story hit the media, many journalists who tried to confirm the story were told that she has not resigned, which was technically true. Hence the confusion in the media. It was when she had tidied up her desk that she officially submitted her letter.

Meanwhile, the presidency, quite unusually, was ready with her replacement even before she submitted her letter. The Minister of state Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, will oversee the Ministry of Finance, henceforth. This is unprecedented, where Finance is subsumed under Budget and Planning.

With the appointment of the new DSS boss, Southern and Middle belt groups have been up in arms. In a statement signed by Chief E.K. Clark (South-South), Chief Ayo Adebanjo (South-West), Chief John Nwodo (South-East) and Dr Bitrus Pogu (Middle Belt), the leaders  noted that the President had gone ahead to deep himself further into the cocoon of ethnic irredentism in making this insensitive appointment.

“We reject this appointment and we do not shy in telling Mr President that he no longer pretends that the country is one under him. In the last few days, there have been fears coming from the international community about the dangers that would come the way of Nigeria if Mr President returns for another term. With his latest action, we add that the country is not safe in the remainder of his first term”, they said.

If the feelers from the developments, pundits insist that the elections have already been won in the preparations. They cite the Ekiti elections which has put the electoral umpire in a difficult situation. Even with the Osun elections, there are rumors of the freezing of accounts of the PDP candidate, including that of his nephew, a popular trending musician. Two court cases are threatening to mare the handover of John Fayemi of Ekiti government house, one from the PDP and one challenging his nomination. Even Atiku Abubakar, a frontline PDP presidential candidate, has petitioned the presidency alleging threat to life because he is contesting for the presidency. According to him, he needed extra security as some people are threatening to kill him and rape his wives if he does not drop his presidential ambition.

The 2019 election appears to be pregnant and nursing a baby at the same time.

Customs: Sanity Returns To Seme Joint Border Post

0

By Stephen Ubanna

For the first time, sanity appears to have returned  to Seme, the busiest  International  border community, between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, a neighbouring country in the West African sub-region in the conduct of business transactions.

The Source finding shows that the usual uncontrolled movement of people , particular,  tricycle and motorcycle operators from Benin part of the border  into the Nigeria  side of the border with smuggled bags of foreign parboiled rice and bales of second hand clothing including hawkers  in broad day light  under the close watch of  officers and other security operatives who were usually tipped between N200.00 and N500.00  have reduced to the barest minimum .

Even the physically challenged individuals masquerading as beggars at the land border Community but  doing illegal businesses and acting as  informants to smugglers  on the movement of the Seme Command patrol team officers on the road  have also reduced as  they   may have  found out that it was no longer  business as usual.

The alleged resumption of    Muhammed Uba Garba, a former Comptroller of Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone A, Ikeja, Lagos, who was affected in the recent shake up in the Service in the Command may have been instrumental to the sanity that had returned to the border town when he has not started implementing his action plan . The Customs Comptroller who was said to have resumed in the Command  about  three weeks ago was said to have sent a message to the unrepentant under cover smugglers  who had been operating freely at the land border over the years that the battle line has been drawn . The Provost Marshall Unit was said to have stationed a Hilux van at the Joint border post to control the movement of goods and services   . The officers were said to have been making good seizures of smuggled rice loaded in daring motor cycle operators.

Already the Customs Comptroller was said to have told officers and men of the Command  at one of its official parades, that they must show greater  discipline and dedication to duties to ” facilitate trade and improve the revenue generation of the Command as well as fight smugglers to a  standstill .

He was said to have stopped short of reading the riot act to the Command patrol  team leaders and their officers including those on the  import and Export Seat    to sit up and  do the right thing  without Compromising their positions. He was said to have made it clear to the officers that  he would not hesitate to” sanction any officer  caught in the act”.

Muhammed Garba At Forward Operation Base, Owode

The Magazine learnt  that he has made some strategic changes to reinvigorate the Command’s operations in  the recent time. The  changes , according to a source, affected a former Deputy Comptroller, Import and Export  and an Assistant Comptroller in-charge of Enforcement. The Deputy Comptroller  was said to have been moved to  Head the Command’s Administration Unit while the Assistant Comptroller, one Hassan, took over the Import and Export Seat. The changes was  a warning  signal to other senior officers holding  strategic positions in the Command to sit up. Another Deputy Comptroller was said to have been removed recently over his inability to handle issues that was within his control without involving him. A senior Customs officer told the Magazine  that there  had been uneasy calm as  many of the officers were yet to come to terms with Muhammed style of leadership , accorda.

The Comptroller, according to a source may be  in a hurry to start making spectacular seizures in the Command as he did at FOU, Zone A, within weks of assumption of office .This is because  since his assumption of duties  in the Command barely three weeks ago, no major Contraband seizure had been made by the Command.  An Enforcement officer confirmed that no exotic Vehicle  had been seized by any patrol team. The officer disclosed that  the hundreds of ”50” bags of foreign parboiled rice that were seized  were intercepted  by officers on bush operation, an indication that many of the patrol leaders should be ready to go  for gross inefficiency as they were  not making seizures.

An indigene of Badagry Community  told the Magazine recently that vehicles loaded with poultry products from Cold Rooms in Cotonou , frequently find their way  into the Nigeria market through unapproved routes after booking. The  source confirmed that the poultry product smugglers also hire Crafts that discharge  at  the Badagry Creek where awaiting customers  are on ground to take delivery.  He disclosed that past Comptrollers of the Seme Command may have had difficulty in controlling the activities of the  field officers because most of them have link with the smugglers who tip  them daily.

‘l;   As a prelude to sanitising the notorious Seme  border, the Customs Comptroller was said to have paid a  vist to Kayode Oguntuase,  the  country’s Ambassador to Republic of Benin with a promise to work towards trade facilitation and improve the  revenue collection of the Command  by blocking all  revenue loopholes.

Worried about reports of the activities of smugglers in the border Community, the Seme Customs boss was said to have told the Ambassador  that  ”smugglers will face hard time”. He was also said to have to have pleaded with Akinosho Hairat, the country’s Customs Controller of Customs  who has expressed her” readiness to work with the Command  to contain the activities of  the across border smugglers”.

Insiders told the Magazine that the Customs Comptroller may have carried his message of zero tolerance for  smugglers  to the palaces of the Ankran of Badagry, Oba of Ibereku Community and other Paramount rulers visited within Seme and Badagry  axis and its environs. The Seme Comptroller was  said to have taken the same message to the revered Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, on Tuesday, September  11,2018.  A member of the team told the Magazine that he had pleaded with the Royal fathers for their support as the custodians of the land in the Customs anti-smuggling war to protect the nation’s economy. The Comptroller’s  familiarisations visit to the military formations in Badagry and Owode, was considered expedient, by  security experts.

The security experts  saw the Customs Comptroller’s  visit to the Army Battalions 243 and  121 Forward Operations base  at Badagry and Owode respectively as very timely  in the Customs anti-smuggling war. This is because the soldiers and the Air-Force personnel were critical  actors in the  anti-smuggling war at the Seme land border  and its environs. There had been instances in the past  where the uniformed personnel had been caught with smuggled vehicles , Thailand parboiled  rice and cartons of poultry products and other Contraband items by Customs personnel but  had been challenged by the officers at gun point.

Given  the Seme Customs boss determination to achieve results with the  operational tools released to the Command by Hammed Ali, a retired  Colonel and Comptroller General, Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, he was said to have solicited the support of the   Brigade Commanders who had promised to give the Command the security back up  in the  anti-smuggling war as part of the inter-agency Collaboration.

Many believe that the support of the soldiers and the Air Force personnel  would be able to assist the Command   to forestall the activities of the smugglers who were usually armed to the teeth from carrying out their nefarious activities. A Customs source told the Magazine  that the Command had lost billions of naira over the years through the activities of the VIP  rice, exotic vehicles and second hand clothing importers and their sponsored smugglers.

It would be recalled that the VIP smugglers, who engage the services of  the youths of the border Communities and security personnel may have been  having their way over the years but there are fears in both official and unofficial circles that  they have got their match in Muhammed who is prepared to cut their wings. The Comptroller is optimistic of policing the border   communities within the Seme jurisdiction with ease  with the support of the Soldiers and Air force personnel who have thrown their weight behind the Command  anti-smuggling war.

For now, one thing that may be working for the Seme Customs Comptroller was his understanding of French, a major International language, spoken in the French -speaking countries in the West African sub-region including  Republic of Benin. Only recently, the Seme Customs boss was said to have visited the Owode Out Station of the Command , where arrangements had been made to get an interpreter for him to relate  with the  Benenios  government officials in the Border Community.

The Comptroller was said to have ignored the arrangement  made by his officers and walked straight to the Benenios officials and  was found  discussing  with them in french. The Out Station officers were at a loss. This is because past Comptrollers that had worked at the Command had relied on them to contract  an interpreter  whenever they were at the Out Station on a working visit.

The situation became very embarrassing that the Headquarters was forced to deploy  a Deputy Superintendent of Customs who understands the French language to serve as an interpreter instead  of  engaging the services of a non Customs officer all the time.. The Deputy Superintendent was said to have operated  from the  the NCS  office at Cotonou.  To improve on his spoken french, he  was said to have been sponsored on a one year advanced French Language studies  in one of the Universities in Cotonou.

But the officer may have lost the job of being an Interpreter  to  the current Customs Comptroller at  Seme Command in his iteractions with his Benenios Customs officers, thus saving the Command thousands of naira yearly. This is evident going by the recent close door  meeting between  the Comptroller and his Beninenios Counterpart at SSeme.

A source told the Magazine that the proceedings of the meeting was conducted in French, that the Benenios officials could not hide their feeling that they now have  a Nigeria Customs Comptroller at the Seme International border who could speak both English and French, which is an added advantage to the Service.

The Seme Customs Comptrller, was said to have chaired  the first  Joint Border Security Meeting, JBSM, which took place  at the joint border post at Seme on Friday, September 7, 2018. The meeting , according to a source, was at the instance of Muhammed to tackle the  illegal  trade   in the border area, described as” capable of  hindering  the maximum revenue  generation of the Command for the government”. The Command, the Magazine was informed has a monthly revenue target of N630 million which had never been met    this year. Muhammed disclosed that  ”securing the nation’s border  has become imperative in order to protect the economy  from the influx of Contraband items from Republic of Benin  into the country”.

Many believe that the Customs  Comptroller, may have prepared himself  for the International border assignment, going by his early engagement of private French language teachers, who were working with him under ground . The  French teachers were said to have been with him for the past six months, and had properly guided him on the use of Diplomatic  languages in the conduct of business at the land border and dealings  with his counterpart at the Republic of Benin and other Countries  in the Cote d’Ivoire corridor in the West African sub-region.

A Customs source told the Magazine that his communication with  indigenes of the Seme Community found  around the Customs office in French has improved his spoken french.  This  may have helped him to tighten the revenue loopholes in the Command and put a close watch on the officers. This is because of the usual deals that goes on at the trailer park before the truck laden  goods are allowed to enter into Nigeria to go through the Customs formalities.

An insider confirmed  that the Command generated  about N520 million in the  month of August, 2018, described as one of the best  since the beginning of the year.  Mohammed Aliyua, former Comptroller of the Command, now Comptroller of, FOU, Zone A, Ikeja, Lagos , was said to have made  all the necessary efforts  to improve on the monthly  revenue  generation of the Command through trade facilitation but that was how far he could go.
