Oluomo fallout: Imohimi Stays Put in Lagos

0

By Uche Mbah

The handover ceremony between the would be new Commissioner of Police for Lagos, Kayode Egbetokun, and the incumbent commissioner, Edgal Imohimi, was cancelled at the last minute due to what Edgal described as “Signal from our bosses in Abuja”.

The hand over was meant to take place simultaneously in Abuja and Lagos. In Abuja, the new Inspector General of Police, IG, Mohamed Adamu, took over from the immediate past IG, Ibrahim Kpotum Idris. But just as the handover ceremony was underway, This magazine was told, Imohimi received a signal from the newly installed IG that the status Quo be maintained. Hence the rest of the ceremony was suspended.

” I am sure that you know Mr. Kayode Egbetokun; he is an old timer in the command,” Imohimi said.

“You all know that our first job is about order and direction; we were about concluding the handing and taking over procedure when we were instructed by our bosses from Abuja to suspend action for now”, he told journalists on ground to witness the event. “So, there will be no change of guard for now. “

It will be recalled that during the All Progressives Congress, APC governorship rally in Lagos, there was commotion which resulted in three journalists being wounded. The Treasurer of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Musliu Akinsanya, popular as MC Oluomo, was stabbed. He is still said to be in critical condition.

Sequel to that, the Magazine gathered, representation was made to the then IG, Idris, by the powers that be in Lagos for the redeployment of the CP out of Lagos. The CP was said to be accused of not putting up adequate security for the rally. But indications were that he declared some people wanted, which were said to be the “wrong people”

Imohimi was made Lagos CP under the tenure of the current Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, who is said to have a good rapport with him. With the level of suspicion about his loyalty to the godfather, it was not difficult to convince  the former IG that he should be removed and replaced with an ally of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Egbetokun was the CSO and aid to Tinubu during his tenure as Governor. He left that position to become the commandant of Police College Lagos.

Ekweremadu Appointed Technical Adviser to Atiku Abubakar

The deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremmadu, has been appointed Technical Adviser to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar. He is to serve alongside Speaker of the HouseRepresentatives Yakubu Dogara, former Peoples democratic party, PDP Chairman Ahmed Makarfi, and and former governor of Jigawa state Sule Lamido. In addition, Lamido was named Chairman, Elders’ Council for the Campaign while Kawu Buraje was appointed Technical Adviser to the chairman Campaign Organisation, Bukola Saraki.

Ekweremadu has in recent times been targets of accusations of anti party activities, with rumors of his impending decampment to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. These speculations were vehemently fueled by the Buhari Media Organisatin, BMO. But he has come out to say that there is no way he will abandon a party where he was one of the few men standing, with others crisscrossing the political carpets out of expedience.

“After the PDP lost the presidency and majority status at the National Assembly in 2015, I made it clear that I would stand by the party, no matter what. It took other party stakeholders and I a lot of efforts, sacrifices, soul-searching, and painstaking negotiations to hold the party together and rebuild it. If I did not abandon the PDP at its darkest hour, it does not make the slightest sense to say that I abandoned it now that its sun is rising again”, Ekwermadu wrote on his official facebook page.

According to him, he has held separate meetings with PDP Vice Presidential candidate, Peter Obi and the Chairman, South East Governors Forum, Dave Umahi,” to work out strategies for the success of our party and candidates in the coming elections. We are also setting up a meeting of South East PDP stakeholders by weekend to continue to strategise on the coming elections. I have no doubt that the South East leaders will deliver the region overwhelmingly to the PDP and I expect that other leaders will also do the same in their respective geopolitical zones.”

Imo Governorship Election: Politicians Strike Deal Ahead Polls as Alliances, Alignments and Horse Trading Intensify

0

By Chidiebere Onyemaizu

The March 2, 2019 gubernatorial election in Imo state is wrapped in high wire intrigues as secret inter-party alliances and alignments take the centre stage. For example, highly placed sources are linking the candidate of Accord party and former governor of the state, Ikedi Ohakim to an unwritten commitment to the Peoples Democratic, PDP, candidate and the immediate past Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha.

In the same manner, the outgoing governor, Rochas Okorocha is also allegedly weighing the option keeping the Ihedioha window open. Though Okorocha has been vociferous in his support for his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu who is contesting under the little known Action Alliance, AA, after he lost the APC ticket to Senator Hope Uzodinmaa, the governor is reportedly not keeping his eggs in one basket.

Okorocha: Not putting all his eggs in one basket

With the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate Senate Uzodinma enjoying full support of the Presidency and the party’s state and national hierarchy, Okorocha had reportedly resolved to play the spoiler. “His position on Imo guber election is “if Uche Nwosu can’t have it, then Hope can’t have either”. Deep down his heart, the man (Okorocha) knows that his son in-law cannot win the election, so he is maintaining a channel of communication with a candidate that he believes can give the APC candidate a good fight and possible win.He still wants to determine who takes over from him”, a source within the APC Imo faction loyal to the governor revealed.

The open disagreement he had with the First Lady, Aisha Buhari over Uzodinma  and Nwosu during APC rally in Owerri, the Imo state capital last week, it has been learnt, has  further convinced Okorocha  that his support for his son inlaw for governor  under AA’s platform and Buhari as APC presidential candidate does not strike the chord in the ears of the Presidency and the party (APC) and therefore is determined to chart his own political course in order to remain politically relevant after leaving office .

During the rally, while Okorocha who is still an APC member (he is the APC senatorial candidate for Imo West) was drumming support for Nwosu rather than his party’s candidate, Senator Uzodinma, Aisha, represented by the wife of the Vice President, Mrs.Dalop Osinbajo, insisted she was in the state to campaign for Senator Uzodinma and other APC candidates in the coming elections and not for Nwosu of AA.

Ihedioha: Ohakim, Okorocha working for him?

Former governor Ohakim who moved to the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA from the PDP mid last year and later to the Accord party after Senator Ifeanyi Araraume’s controversial emergence as the party’s (APGA) governorship candidate is reportedly primed at punishing his former party for the shabby way it treated him and other aspirants. Essentially, all former Imo APGA gubernatorial aspirants are accusing the party’s national leadership led by Victor Oye of selling the party’s guber ticket to the highest bidder.

Sources claim the former PDP governor who was swept from power in 2011 by Okorocha( then an APGA candidate) planted himself in Accord party as candidate for next month’s guber election primarily to deal a mortal blow on Araraume and APGA by dividing Okigwe zone’s votes where both of them hail from, thereby making it impossible for the APGA candidate to obtain a bloc vote from the zone.

There are also speculations that Ohakim’s supporters are being secretly asked to cast their votes for Ihedioha. “If a winner does not emerge in the first ballot, the two leading candidates, surly Ihedioha and Uzodinma, will square up for a repeat contest and I can authoritatively tell you that His Excellency will openly campaign for the PDP candidate” , a source close to Ohakim’s camp told this magazine.

However, this magazine has also gathered that some elements in the Imo PDP, APGA and SDP who are bruised by the manner their parties picked guber flag bearers are assiduously working for the victory of Senator Uzodinma in the polls.

Meanwhile, some members of Okorocha’s APC faction are not sticking their heads for Nwosu.Rather, they  are pitching their tent with candidates who they feel will better butter their bread. One them who spoke to The Source at Amagu, Oru East local government area of the state last week confessed that Okorocha himself was not sure of victory for his son-inlaw. “Why should I put my eggs in one basket? Politics for me is business and every businessman wants to make profits. My support goes to the candidate that plays his cards well. Not even our leader(Okorocha) is sure of Nwosu. In any case, let the best man carry the day”, he told The Source.

Followers of Imo politics insist that Senator Uzodinma has unassailable advantage over the other main contenders. They explain that whereas the Senator currently representing Imo West in the Senate virtually has the at least 10 out of the 12 local government areas in Orlu zone where he hails from in his kitty,Araraume and Ohakim will lock horns in Okigwe zone where the zone’s votes will be split between the two while Ihedioha’s Owerri zone will be a battle ground.

Onnoghen Absent in Court, Criticisms May Force FG to Soft- pedal on Trial

By Uche Mbah

The level of anger, uproar that trailed the announcement of plans to drag the Chief Justice of The Federation, Walter Onnoghen, to the Code of Conduct Tribunal, coupled with International pressures, may have decided the rumored tactical withdrawal of the federal Government from the case.

It will be recalled that one Dennis Aghanya, former Media Aid to President Buhari, wrote a petition against the Chief Justice of the Federation, CJN, to the Code of conduct Tribunal. Aghanya, the Executive secretary of a Civil Society Group, the Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative (ARDI), wrote the petition under the auspices of the group.

Aghanya accused the Chief  Justice of non-full declaration of assets.Onnoghen faces a six count charge of non-disclosure of many bank accounts connected to him as a Supreme Court judge. According to the charges, he may have used the account for money laundering.

Onnoghen was to have appeared in the Code Of Conduct Tribunal today, 14th January 2019, but was represented by the foremost senior Advocate of Nigeria, Wole Olanipekun, who let a team of 47 other Senior lawyers to the Tribunal.

During the short sitting of the tribunal, Danladi Umar, the tribunal judge, who also once presided over the trial of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, insisted that Onnoghen must appear to the court in the next court day, which he adjourned to 22 January 2019. Last weekend, the South South governors met on the issue, and in their communiqué advised him not to appear before the tribunal. It was not clear whether his absence was in respect to their advice.

The Niger delta Militants also rose from a meeting and declared that Buhari has shown his aversion to appointment of people from the zone, citing the retirement of Mathew Seifa as DSS officer to bring in his retired junior officer as replacement. They insisted that Buhari must leave or they will resume hostilities.

But indications are that pressures are coming from both local and international communities to force the president to soft pedal on the issue. The Saraki case ended in the Supreme Court freeing him. But Olanipekun team are arguing on the jurisdiction or lack thereof of the CCT to try Onnoghen.

Lagos APC Rally: Lagos CP Removed, Oluomo To Be Flown Abroad

0

By Uche Mbah

The violence that rocked the All Progressives Congress, APC, rally in Lagos that resulted in a factional leader of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Musliu Akinsanya, also known as MC Oluomo, being hospitalized has brought to the fore the problem of running a democratic government side by side with a Mafioso-like union that thrives on Violence and rule of the thumb.

Already, the whole episode has afforded the godfather of Lagos, Bola Tinubu to now have a complete control of the whole state apparatus in the event of the APC governorship candidate winning the election.

Following the disastrous outing, for example, the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imhonimi, was swiftly deployed out of Lagos. He has been, however, replaced by Kayode Egbetokun. Egbetokun was the Aid de Camp of Bola Tinubu when he was governor.

The Source had reported that a former Personal Assistant to Tinubu, Muri Okunola, is now the Head of Service of Lagos state. And the governorship candidate, Babajide Sanwolu, was Personal Assistant to Senator Remi Tinubu.

Recall that on January 8 2019, Lagos state kick-started their governorship campaign which was well attended in Ikeja, Lagos. During the rally, just when Akinwumi Ambode, the governor of Lagos state was delivering his speech, gunshots rent the air, there was pandemonium, and some people received bullet wounds, including a television Continental reporter and two other journalists.

In the ensuing confusion, MC Oluoma was stabbed on the neck with what was later described as a poisoned dagger. Another prominent member of the mob world, identified as legacy, was also wounded. Unconfirmed reports indicate that Legacy later gave up the ghost but Oluomo is still battling for dear life at Eko hospital where he was taken to.

MC Oluoma is just one of the names that evoke fear and trepidation in the world of Lagos Politics. Others are strange names like Talo Skibo, Koko Zaria, Hamburger, Esi oluwo, Kunle Poly, Owoseni, Nayam, and Mamok. These are names that evoke fear because they are said to supply thugs for political violence.

Many of these names are no longer in the land of the living. And Oshodi and Iyanu Ipaja appear to be the hub of their activities. Hambuger and Esi Oluwo held sway at  Oshodi. In 2015, Oluwo decamped to the Peoples democratic Party, PDP, and PDP swept the Primaries and went ahead to clear all positions there. He was later cajoled to return to the All Progressives Congress, APC, and he did. The day he resumed at the party, he was stabbed to death at an APC rally. Two years later, Hamburger was Also killed in an APC rally. The foot soldiers went underground. After the stabbing of Oluomo, Youtube videos emerged where aids of Hamburger and Oluwo accused Oluomo of being responsible for the death of their bosses. After the death of the duo, Oluomo was declared wanted and went underground. He was later to resurface and since has been seen walking around with Police escorts.

Reacting to allegations that he was responsible for the killings of the dead underground chieftains, Oluomo denied ever killing anybody. “I wonder why some people will want to judge me’, he said. “I have not by commission or omission impacted on the death of anyone in Oshodi or Lagos at Large. Allahu make it easy and permit the spirit of those they claim I kill to take my life if I kill (sic) them as they claim”.

Rumors are rife of plans by the state government to fly him out of Nigeria for medical treatment. His Children are said to be living in the United states of America.

It is also on record that he led the team from Lagos to Osun state to help in the Osun rerun elections in some wards in an election that Tinubu’s cousin was the APC candidate.

Gov Ikpeazu Has a Stolen Mandate – Alex Oti

0

Alex Oti, from Abia State was the Group Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer  of Diamond Bank PLC.  Today, he is contesting for the governorship of his state under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). This is his second attempt. He lost in 2015 to the incumbent.

You left your plum job as GMD /CEO of a bank in 2014.  What was your motivation then and now?

My motivation is to change things in Abia. Abia state has been very unfortunate and has gone through poor quality leadership, and I thought some of us should offer some sacrifice.  In fact, I thought I should make that sacrifice, given that I have what it requires.  It is the reason why I am still interested in becoming the governor of the state because what I saw in 2014 is still the same now.  So, as it was compelling for me then, it is more compelling now in 2018.

Abians are used to promises of good roads, water, improved infrastructure et cetera. What new thing are you going to bring into governance if elected?

The new thing is that you hardly see people like us in politics.  We are not politicians. So, I’m coming for that intervention because that is what I call it. It is not the usual run of play with those that call themselves politicians who want to remain in the field to the exclusion of other people. Because I am not one of them, I think that is new enough.

We are bringing in skills, quality management, experience, training network. I believe that should be faster to me, and most importantly, understanding the economy,  knowing what to do, when to and at what particular time to do it, knowing that if we do not invest in infrastructure, then, your Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) will go down. That is, you will not empower your youths. By empowerment here, I do not mean buying them Keke (tricycle), motorcycle,  Okada or wheel barrow. No.  I am talking about empowerment in terms of creating jobs for them, otherwise what we end up with will be kidnappers, robbers, challatans, the ones you call Agberos (touts), even though they may have gone to school.

I believe it is also important that we understand that if you don’t secure your environment, then you can go to Turkey, China, like some of the people I know do.  You can even relocate there in search of foreign investment which will not come until you have created the enabling environment for these businesses to come to you. And when you do that, you don’t need to campaign because they will naturally come.

It is also important to note that when you have let your state decay like Abia has today, most of the companies, industries and so on that were hitherto there will relocate. And when that happens, the level of unemployment will grow because these companies were those maintaining the youth, and we don’t have any plans for the youth.

Also important is that when you are running a government, you know that there is so much you can do in terms of generating employment. Today, we hear of governors appointing one thousand SSAs (Senior Special Assistants), two thousand ASs (Special Assistants) and all that. It’s all fraud because you know that you don’t have jobs for them. So, you just hand out stipends to them, give them an impression that they are working. That is what my friend calls masturbation. They think they are doing something, but at the end of the day, they are doing nothing. So, those are the thinking that I mean .We are bringing a new thinking. We are trying to make people know that what makes you wealthy is not the amount of money you have collected, but how much of it you have used  judiciously.

What it means is that we want to make Abia people know that we shouldn’t believe in a government where the only economy that is booming is the propaganda economy and billboard economy. So, I believe that those are different from what you’ve always heard.

This issue of youth restiveness in the South-east, the issue of IPOB, how do you think it will impact on your ambition?

I think, on the issue of IPOB, there is a need for proper engagement. Some of the things I have highlighted, they are also applicable because they are young people.  Most of them are available for some of these things because they don’t have jobs to do, because government has not really addressed their needs. When I talk about government, I mean Local government which includes Local Government and State Government.

If we had done well in managing our people and resources, maybe an IPOB may not have arisen. Even if it did, may be not in the form or the kind of followership. I think we created the condition for it to happen. So, the first thing to do is to engage them, find out what they are looking for, and provide those things. I’m sure that when you do that, you begin to reduce tension. I don’t believe that the way to deal with it is through force.

Having said that, I have seen election happen in Anambra last year and I cannot confirm, but I did not hear that the boycott was reversed. So, if election could happen in Anambra, I believe Abia should not be a different case. We are not in a position to engage them now because we are not in power, but when we get into power, we will be able to engage them, and sit down with them. And when they see the honesty of purpose and genuiness of passion, I think they will come on board.

You narrowly missed the governorship seat in 2015. What did you not do right then? How do you think you will defeat an incumbent who defeated you in 2015?

Good question. Let me start with the incumbent. He didn’t defeat me, he lost. So, he is actually exercising a stolen mandate and you know how Karma works. Sometimes, you think you know everything, but at the end of the day, you know nothing. He’s not been able to exercise that mandate judiciously, that’s why he has failed in virtually everything he touched. I don’t  know what your view is as somebody that know Abia well. Is there any difference from the time the present governor took over and now, like the Abiriba of 2015 and today?  If there are, maybe from the wards, and it applies across the state including the ward from where he comes.

The point is that he has failed. The point is that he did not win. He knows it was a stolen mandate. The other part of the question is: what we did not do right. I’m not sure there is a lot that we did not do right.  It was the impunity by the former governor, Theodore Orji, who knew that they would lose, and they stole the election results of two local governments. And when they saw that I was leading with 75,000 votes, they wrote fake results,  and pushed them into the collation centre. And as they did, because we had made sufficient noise and raised alarm, the Returning Officer knew they were fake results, and he cancelled them in Umuahia. And as he cancelled them, since I was leading with 75,000 votes, the right thing to do was to declare me winner.

Now the same former governor, Theodore Orji, invaded the collation centre with a lot of PDP people, police, army, security of the governor, and forced the Returning Officer, Professor Ben Ugwumba, to reverse himself under gun point. That was impunity of the highest order, that was criminal. I’m not too sure that will be allowed today. He did it because they were in power at the center. I’m not sure anybody will allow that today.

So, it was not what we didn’t do, it was actually what we didn’t envisage because it was an act of desperation. Under normal circumstance, that should not stand. We thought it would not stand. If we thought it was going to stand, I also would have come there with my supporters because I was controlling 70 per cent of the state, and the whole place would have come down. But I didn’t want to do that because I thought that the court would restore the mandate.

Of course the Court of Appeal did, and pronounced me governor,  but it was reversed by the Supreme Court.

Being an incumbent, you have a point because he has the resources of the state, he’s not paying salaries, he’s not paying pensioners and so he can unleash that. But we have also seen instances where incumbents have been defeated. Jonathan was an incumbent. He had all the resources, but somebody came from outside and defeated him. Ohakim was an incumbent at one point and, he was defeated. I’m sure the Abia people that voted for me are more than willing to do so again, and some of the people that voted for them are sufficiently angry and will not vote for them again. So, I’m very confident about winning.

When you were going for the election in 2015, APGA was one house, but now, APGA is divided against itself. So how do you intend to bring everybody on board?

It is not entirely true that APGA was together then even though majority of them were together with me. If you remember, there was a gentleman called Damian Ufomba that was also dragging issues. He went all the way to Supreme Court to Appeal. I defeated him all the way. The thing about political structure is that it is not like a corporate entity where everybody must align even if you disagree. I would like you to show me one party today where there is no disagreement.

I am sure you have been reading about Rochas Okorocha and his problems with the APC National Chairman. I’m sure you have been reading about what is happening in PDP also. The issue is not in people having grievance and disagreeing. The issue is in what is done to deal with it. Today, we have set up reconciliation committee to reconcile those that are waiting. But don’t also forget that  opposition also funded some people to come and cause confusion in APGA. Those people who are funded are on a mission. They will only stop when there is no more likelihood for them to cause distraction. And of course, it is easy for them to continue so that they will continue to draw money from whoever is the one sponsoring them.

Some of them have gone to court now, lawyers have to be paid, so they have to present the bill to whoever is sponsoring them. So it is a business for them. So when you want to negotiate with them, they look at you as one who want to stop their business. So you leave them to exhaust themselves. And for those who are genuinely aggrieved, we know how it is when two people contest for a position, one of them will win. And when that one wins, the one who lost will not be very happy, but over time we tend to manage the situation.

Are you saying you are the authentic APGA candidate in Abia state?

I thought you knew. I am not the one that will be telling you. I think INEC has published the issues of those to contest the elections in Abia state. What did you see there? It is not me saying, it’s INEC.

Taking you back to what you said, that federal might was deployed in that election. Don’t you think the same federal might also be deployed this time?

There is a remote possibility.  Remote I say because the party in the centre is not the party in the state. So the APC candidate and myself will go into that race fighting the incumbent who is a common enemy. So, there would  not be any congruence. You need the man at the centre to share the same party with the man in the state to be able to unleash the level of impunity.

If you become governor of Abia state?

(Cuts in) Not if, it is when I become governor.

I insist Sir: If you become governor, how do you intend to tackle the issue of the rampaging herdsmen?

Well, it is a sad development, a sad problem. Quite frankly, it is a problem that must be dealt with, and it is a security problem. For me, I believe in engagement, I believe in jaw-jaw, I believe in discussion. So part of the problem that we have is that a lot of them are not able to sit down and talk. So, we cannot effectively do so much in terms of security.  If you do not have a platform with which you can discuss with the head of security agencies, because security is still  key, even though you are the Chief Security Officer of the state, power still comes from the centre.  So I will engage them to ensure I have an understanding  with the centre, whoever is  there, and have a clear programme on how to deal with it. And luckily for now, it has not been a very topical issue in Abia state,  but I know that in Benue to a little extent in Enugu, and I think some parts of Ebonyi.  It is not a problem in Abia but to the extent that it is a problem in the country, I am also interested in it.

Now, as somebody with a business background, what are you going to do to increase the awareness of Aba as the fashion capital of Africa.

Part of it is awareness, part of it is real. Real in the sense that traditionally,  Aba has always  been the centre of leather  and fashion. They also have the skills. So Aba is too central to my agenda,  Aba combines Nnewi and Onitsha.  Nnewi is an industrial city. Onitsha is a trading and commerce axis. Aba combines the two. There are lots of manufacturing that typically happen or should happen in Aba.  It is also a training centre.  So, all that I need to do is take a holistic view of Aba and ask: what do these people need? When you do that,  you are also doing so many other things.  You are also taking people out of the place.  So when you invest heavily in infrastructure, for the place is completely rotten, replant the place, have proper channel for drainage, and all that, and the roads – all the roads in Aba are under 140km.  I will ensure they have electricity.  It is so very critical, I was involved with Geometric Power in Aba that was expected to generate about 141megawatts of power for Aba and its environs. Since I left them, I don’t know where they are now.  But what I remember is that I was able to furnish the construction when I was in the Bank. So there were political issues about how to reinvent Aba.  It was sold again to Eastern Electric.  I don’t know what has happened in the last four years. If I were at the driver’s  seat in Abia, I would have expected that, that is where all the energies will be concentrated.  They were at the point of delivering power.  So I will put all my energy to see that it is done. But now that it has not been done, it means they are waiting for me to come and do it. Once that is done, we will have power 24  hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year in Aba. At least, we would have solved one major problem. You see, the fashion you people have talked about,  their major problems is power. If you solve power problems, you solve about 70 per cent of the problem.  And then, poor environmental sanitation  is very key with the focus of infrastructure they will get back to Aba, and when they get back to Aba, the Internally Generated Revenue is guaranteed in real  form.

Look at Lagos. A lot of the businesses in Lagos are coming from the East. All our people are here in Lagos. And I’m sure they are guaranteed some of the basic necessities – security, infrastructure. I’m sure it is going to be cheaper to do their businesses here in Aba than in Lagos.

How will you deal with the issue of bad  federal roads in Abia state?

When you say the road is a federal road, who uses it? For me, it really does not matter. The road is important whether a federal road or a state road. If it is a federal road, you get approval from the Federal government, then you do the road for you are the ones using the road.  It is after this you begin to battle the federal government to get your refund, and it is on record that a lot of them have been refunded. When they see that you are mismanaging the one they gave you as federal allocation, they would not be in a hurry to refund. Sometimes, the quality of the road you build may be substandard, and by the time the federal government looks at it, they are not going to pay for it. That may be part of it, I’m not too sure. I am saying that if I am on that seat where decisions are being taken, I would look at it that way.  When I have the budget if I have hundred naira, who do / give fist? Should I give the one in Kafanchan or Owerri that is building low quality road, or should I give the one in Ebonyi that is building high quality road? That is the way I will look at it. I will give it to the man in Ebonyi. The issue is that whether it is state or federal road, it is you that pass through the road. And when you fold your hands and say it is federal road  and federal government does not see it as a profundity, you  will be using the road, you will be passing the road.

What are your plans for Foreign Direct Investment for Abia state?

We have talked about it. Foreign Direct Investment is not about how many times you visited China, not about how many times you visited Dubai, not about how many times you went to Europe and America. Foreign Direct Investment will naturally flow in area that are prepared for them. If it is a good product, people will buy. So, that is my opinion of Foreign Direct Investment. You have not fixed your backyard and you are looking outside.  They already  have more information about you.

What is your relationship with the governor?

He is the governor. But if I made any allegation,  I don’t come out to make frivolous allegations. Beyond his being the governor, I don’t have any other relationship with him. We are in opposing camps, we know each other.

Passenger Train Derails In Lagos, Traps Many

0

By Uche Mbah

2019: Fear Over Buhari’s Health Intensifies

President Buhari has failed to prove critics wrong over claims that his health is failing and therefore may not be able to perform effectively if he’s reelected in this year’s presidential election.

Buhari May Lose 2019 Election

It’s still widely suggested among Nigerians that the president lacks the stamina to run the most populous nation in the continent for the next four years.

The president has recently directed Bola Tinubu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC and former governor of Lagos state to fully take charge of the party’s presidential campaign.

The development, the opposition says, confirms the suggestions that all is not yet well with the president who has spent a better part of his four year presidential tenure in an undisclosed United Kingdom hospital, seeking treatment for an undisclosed ailment.

It’s now obvious that President Buhari cannot withstand the rigor of campaigns, not the least attend to very difficult state matters in the next four years if re-elected as president and commander in chief, his opponents say.

The controversy over the president’s health is coming on the verge of Eurasia Group, a New York based organization that President Buhari will likely lose presidential election less than 40 days to the election.

Recall that  The Economist magazine, a united state based newsmagazine had last October predicted that the candidate of the ruling APC will lose the 2019 presidential election to his opponent in the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar.

According to Euasia, Nigerians will be making informed choices based on many factors, including whether to vote for an ailing president or his opponent who has no bad health records.

According to the US based body, President Buhari’s government has made progress in areas such as “tax reform and restructuring of the energy sector” but that Nigerians are deeply worried that the president will again spend the next four years, finding solutions to his unknown health problems, if elected.

The advisory body further said Buhari will remain a lame duck to presidential aides who will capitalize on the president’s ailment to seize power through the bank door.

Buhari’s wife, Aisha has complained stringently that his husband is not in control of his government, that some powerful individuals in the presidency have been wielding presidential powers.

But the president has denied the allegation in last December interview with voice of America, VOA.

Euasia said the situation will even get worse in Buhari’s second presidency.

“And if Buhari’s health problems continue” Euasia said” the situation will get worse. The president’s continual medical leaves abroad impaired governance in his first term.

A repetition would again remove him from decision making and the public eye for months at a time, leaving investors to wonder who is calling the shots and whether they are qualified for the job,”it said.

The president’s state of health will also increase tension in his party, the group said, adding that the future of the ruling APC remain uncertain in the hands of an ailing president who has obviously lost totally the control of his party.

The internal wrangling among opposing forces in APC in the last three years has tested the president’s position as the Leader of the party.

The outcome of the primary elections conducted by the party last year has further exposed the deep seated animosity among APC leaders. This has led to suggestions that president Buhari has no capacity to keep the party knitted together.

APC future is bleak, Euasia said as the Buhari second presidency will open “floodgates for political infighting, increasing the chances that his ruling All Progressives Congress implodes.”

Meanwhile, whether Tinubu will be able to advance the cause of APC by delivering this year’s presidential election to Buhari is another ball game all together, critics of the president said.

The former Lagos helmsman is a political strategists, many believe can bring his experience to bear to defeat the main opposition party, PDP.

But that in itself is a big challenge to the goggled politician whose interests has pitted him against other party leaders and presidency officials.

Those that may feel aggrieved that the party machinery has been handed over to Tinubu at their own expense may refuse to answer or work with him. This may end up putting the party’s overall interest in total jeopardy, critics have warned.

Army, Police Others Will Not Take Order From Tinubu

Also while handing the presidential campaign to the ex-Lagos governor, may, to one of his supporters, who spoke to the magazine in confidence meant that “the apparatus of state has been handled over to Tinubu to win the election no matter what,” this can send a wrong signal to the opposition that the presidency is planning to use state security to rig the election in its favor.

But whether security agencies will answer to Tinubu who is not the commander in chief is another issue entirely.

A top army officer who spoke with the magazine said this is not possible because “the army, police or other sister agency will not take order from a politician” and that the position of the military in the up-coming election is to remain neutral.

APC Governors Oppose Tinubu

Besides, no fewer than three state governors in the south west, Tinubu’s domain are up in arms against him over political differences. The governors are Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti and Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo states.

Not left out in the political onslaught against Tinubu is also the governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha who has lately vowed to work against the interest of the party in this years’ February election.

The states are critical to President Buhari’s re-election.

Mixed Feelings As Lagos Gets Youngest Head of Service

The appointment by Akinwumi Ambode, the Lagos state governor, of a new Head of the Civil Service, has been received with mixed feelings by the civil service community.

At 47, Hakeem Muri-Okunola was sworn in on 31st December 2018 as the 21st Head of Service, the youngest ever to head the Lagos Civil Service. He took over from  Folashade Adesoye who retired four days earlier. The ceremony, which saw the Godfather of Lagos, Bola Tinubu, in attendance, attracted who is who in the ruling party in the state.

But the swearing in was marred by grumblings from career civil servants who felt deprived of opportunities of climbing up the career ladder since he was said not to be a career civil servant. Besides, some see him as not having the temperament for the job, being given to youthful exuberance.

Muri-okunola, a Lawyer, was called to the Bar in 1995, after which he proceeded for his masters in England. After his masters he had a stint private practice, and was later appointed Special assistant to Tinubu, who was governor then. It was not clear what portfolio he was assisting on, but he was later moved to the position of Executive Secretary to the Governor on Land matters in 2005. Hence Lagos Land issues fell under his portfolio. In 2011, the then governor Babatunde Fashola made him Permanent Secretary, Land Bureau and finally drafted him in as Permanent Secretary, Youth and Social development.

His career thus spanned only 18 years, whereas others before him has put in more than 25 years of service. Many rose through the ranks.

Part of the fears expressed by some civil servants was that he may have been imposed on Ambode as a check in these last days of transition. “He is too young and reckless to be saddled with such responsibilities”, a civil servant grumbled recently.

It is believed that it is part of the strategic placement of loyalists by Tinubu for future use. Speculations are rife that he is being groomed to replace the new APC governorship candidate Sanwolu in the next eight years or if he  fails out of favour within four years, assuming that the APC wins the election.
