Soyinka Accuses FG Of Using Security Agencies To Intimidate Nigerians

By Akinwale Kasali

Nobel Laureate and activist, Prof. Wole Soyinka has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari administration of intimidating and silencing Nigerians dissatisfied with his governance, using Security agents.

Soyinka expressed his dissatisfaction with the way security agencies muzzle Nigerians when they come together to deliberate and exchange ideas.

This, he said, signals fear on the part of the government, which reduces the people and the government itself.

The Ogun State born global icon made this disclosure at the unveiling of an art gallery in Badagry, Lagos State,  in commemoration of his 85th birthday.

It would be recalled that last week, the Police, Army, the Department of State Security and other security agencies sealed off the venue of a symposium in which Soyinka, Femi Falana and other activists were to speak on the security situation of the country and the arrest of Omoyele Sowore by the Federal Government.

Police vehicles with heavily armed personnel were positioned at Oregun, Lagos, venue of  the symposium tagged: “Democracy, State Repressionand the State of Insecurity in Nigeria”, organised by the  Coalition for Revolution.

Soyinka said it is germane to send strong message and warning to the government to stop intimidating, muzzling and trampling on the fundamental human rights of Nigerians of like minds, coming together to share ideas.

“You’re reducing them as human beings and you’re also reducing yourselves as human beings, because it means you’re afraid to listen.”

Soyinka also cautioned Nigerians not to believe everything they read on social media. He said they should, instead, take such online materials “with a pinch of salt.”

2023 Presidency: Yoruba, Igbo May Fail To Get Power – Shehu Sani

By Akinwale Kasali

Senator Shehu Sani,  member of the Eighth Senate has  revealed that the  2023 Presidency may elude the South-West and the South-East if they fail to unite among themselves.

The Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, candidate at the 2019 elections made this statement in an interview with the members of Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abuja chapter.

Sani said that the two zones clamouring to be in power must first unite, else, their ambition will be defeated and become history.

Sani represented Kaduna Senatorial District in the 2015 elections under the All Progressive Congress, APC, before he cross-carpeted to the PRP before the 2019 election due to the differences he had with Kaduna APC and the governor of the State, Nasir El-Rufai.

Sani said the ruling class was unyielding to the idea of rotational presidency and that it would take only a united South to win the 2023 presidential poll.

He said,  “It will be unfair for other sections of the country if one section uses its topographical or demographic advantage to hold onto power, knowing full well that it was not the topography or demographic advantage that delivered them power.
“Rotation of power is what I prescribe and stand for, whether that power goes to the South-East or South-West, it is dependent on the people of the South.

“What I will say is that there is a possibility of producing a northern as  President in 2023 if the South-East and the South-West remain divided in their resolve on the governance of the country.
“It is this division that will be exploited by those who are proposing the issue of competence.”

Sani said the direction of power did not depend on individuals’ views but that it would be decided by the political blocs contending for the presidency in  2023.
He added, “If power moves to the South-East, it will be  the  final defeat of secessionists and also a formal end to the Nigerian civil  war.”
Sani stressed that he would continue to advocate that those in power should respect the principles of rotational power.

He, however, warned the Yoruba and the Igbo to adhere strictly to his warnings, if not, they would lose out on the 2023 presidency.
Sani said,  “Also, if one major party supports the rotation of power and another refuses to support, there will still be trouble.
“So, realising the respect for rotation of power will be dependent on three factors.
“There will be the common resolve of the people of the South that power should move to the South.
“Secondly, the common resolve of the South-East and South-West that this is where it will go to and the third is that the major party must accept this as a reality.’

“These three things are inevitable and  one of them that is not considered will still end up with  a northern presidency in 2023.”
The activist-turned politician said that this proposal of his was for peace, tranquility and unity to reign supreme in the country.

The All Progressive Congress, APC, has cleared Governor Yahaya Bello to contest in the party’s primary for the  governorship election in the State.

The screening committee for the APC primaries led by Senator Hope Uzodinma gave Bello the nod to commence his second term ambition in the saddle as the governor of the State, alongside Ekele Blessing, Hon. Hassan Baiwa and Engr. Bashir Gegu.

The coast is now clear for Governor Yahaya Bello to pick the sole governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the November 16 Kogi election.

The Uzodinma-led committee screened out major contenders for the party ticket, in which 16 other aspirants were screened out by the committee.

The magazine confirmed that former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin, a former President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Abdullahi Sani-Lulu, sons of former Governor Abubakar Audu, Mohammed and Mustapha, were knocked out.

Others whose ambition were cut-short  are former National Airspace Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) boss, Prof. Seidu Ogah; Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and Barr Babatunde Irukera.

Sadly, veteran journalist, Yakubu Mohammed, was knocked out by the committee, to the disappointment of the media guru.

With this screening exercise, the coast is clear for Bello to clinch the party’s ticket, as other aspirants for the tickets may not pose any threat to the incumbent.

2023:Why The Igbo Will Not Be President – ACF

0

By Gideon Njoku

The aspiration of the Igbo to have one of their own as the President of Nigeria in 2023 will never come true, according to the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF.

The ACF says the Igbo cannot be trusted to hold Nigeria together as a country. A President of Igbo extraction, it says, would break up Nigeria.

Reacting to the controversy surrounding the assault on Senator Ike Ekweremadu by  members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB,  in Nuremberg, Germany, the ACF said it has put a question mark on the chances of the South East to produce the President of Nigeria in 2023. Other tribes will be afraid of an Igbo Presidency, the group insisted.

ACF also said that the rascality and violence exhibited by IPOB, justify its terrorist status as pronounced ng a court in Nigeria, and gazzetted by the Nigerian Government. The group, also, said that the Igbo woulf mode more than any other tribe in the event of a break-up because the region does not have enough land to accommodate the activities of its people.

Said the ACF in an interview with *The Telegraph* by its Secretary-General, Anthony Sani, “The implications of the attack on the Igbo Presidency in 2023, would be the fear by other sections of the country that a President of Nigeria of Igbo extraction could play a Gorbachev and cause the split of the country”

Gorbachev,  a former President of  the Soviet Union, and later, Russia, was responsible for the break-up of the Soviet Union into small republics.

The ACF, however, admitted that the majority of the Igbo do not share the aspirations of IPOB.

Sani: The good news is that majority of the Igbo do not share the aspirations of IPOB, which is to cause the disintegration of the country.

“Most Igbo seem to share the view that the certain benefits of togetherness are far more than the uncertain gains of disintegration of the country. This is because there is not enough land for  the Igbo in the South east.

“Igbo people, more than any other ethnic group in the country, need large domestic market for the expression of their commercial acumen by way of trading, considering that millions of Igbo have settled and invested outside their Igboland.”

The ACF scribe continued: “I saw the attacks of the Deputy Senate President in a fireign land as vindication of Nigeria’s courts,  which passed the judgement that IPOB is a terrorist group. “Otherwise, the platform would use democratic due process to pursue its aspirations.”

Emphasizing that the international community will never take IPOB seriously,  ACF dismissed the group “as a stone groping in the wild sea.”

Oyegun Predicts Uncertainty Over The Future Of APC In 2023

By Akinwale Kasali

Former Chairman of All Progressive Congress, APC, John Odigie Oyegun has predicted that the APC will face difficulties come 2023 after the expiration of President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The former governor of Edo State made this statement in an interview, saying that the APC will have serious issues to contend with as the President Buhari whom the party had tailored its change agenda on, will  not be qualified to contest, putting the party in a fix and a serious situation in 2023.

Oyegun stressed that the party needs to put its house in order and solve its internal differences before the next election to forestall disaster that could see the party become history.

He added that when the APC was formed, predictions  were made that it would  implode in a year or two, but the party waxed stronger.

“The APC will have issues in 2023 and it has to start now to avoid it, it has time to put its acts together for 2023. In 2023, there will be no President Buhari.”

The former APC chairman dismissed  allegations that the ruling party failed to accomplish any of its promises during its first term.

Oyegun said that the change mantra is still being carried along in the current next level agenda due to the determination of the Buhari administration, but this will end as he leaves the saddle in 2023.

“We never told you that we have that magic switch which immediately our president is turned into office, he flicks it, the whole of the country  changes. No, it is a process and let me admit, the realities on ground turned out to be a little bit more difficult than we thought.

“Even as we move to the very next level, we are carrying change with us”, he said.
Oyegun, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, said he invited leaders of the opposition party for the sake of emphasising that politicians are not enemies.
“I wanted to make a point so I invited people from across  party divide because we are not enemies, we all want to govern Nigeria. We may have different methods, but that does not make us mortal enemies. So I thought that was an opportunity to make that point,” he said.

As regards the crisis within the Edo State  APC, Oyegun said such should not be allowed to disrupt the goals of the party and the state.

He said he offered himself as the leader of the party during the 2015 elections because he wanted to contribute to the change agenda.
“We cannot allow this crisis in Edo state or even in the party. My message is that we must try to achieve a leadership that is by compromise, by agreement and that is inclusive. We must let the constitution, both of the party and the nation to be our guide.

“I have always believed that things can be done better. That our politics does not have to be as aggressive as it is.

“When we embarked on the doctrine of change, for me, this meant change for everybody in the nation, change in our attitude, change in our respect for law, change in our respect for due process, change in our respect for what is right and our ability to differentiate it from what is wrong. And I offered myself for leadership because I wanted to contribute to that process, that our politics can be different”, he submitted.

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to leave for Japan Sunday to attend an International Conference on African Development, according to Presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina. Adesina said Buhari will “deliver Nigeria’s Statement during Plenary Session Three in which he will appraise Nigeria-Japan relations and takeaways from TICAD6.”

The statement reads as follows:

“President Buhari will deliver Nigeria’s Statement during Plenary Session Three in which he will appraise Nigeria-Japan relations and takeaways from TICAD6.

“He will attend a State Banquet and also honour the invitation of Emperor Naruhito to a Tea Reception at the Imperial Palace, Tokyo. In addition to a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Abe, the Nigerian President will also attend some side-events and meet chief executive officers of some Japanese companies with huge investments in Nigeria.

“Formed in 1993, the now triennial TICAD, which has been convened alternately in Japan and Africa since TICAD6, according to the organisers, is the largest international conference held in Japan which provides an open forum that generates innovative discussion among various stakeholders on African development.

“Participants are drawn not only from African countries, but also international organisations, private companies and civil society organisations involved in development.

“TCAD7 is expected to focus on Africa’s ‘economic transformation and improvements in business environment and institution through private investment and innovation; promotion of resilient and sustainable African society for human security; and peace and stability in support of Africa’s domestic proactive efforts.

“Nigeria has gained tremendously since her participation in TICAD6 at the highest level, during which Japan pledged $30 billion investment for the future of Africa combined with the private sector, $10 billion infrastructure investment, and $500 million for vocational training of 50,000 Africans.

“Since the Nairobi Conference, Japanese government and companies have been very active in supporting Nigeria’s agriculture, healthcare, electricity and youth empowerment.

“President Buhari and his delegation are expected in Yokohama to push for broader Japanese assistance in the areas of science and technology, innovation, human resource development, education, agriculture, power, health and disaster risk reduction, among others.

“President Buhari will be accompanied by Governors Babagana Zulum, AbdulRahmam AbdulRazaq and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Borno, Kwara and Lagos States respectively; ministers and other top government officials.

“The President is expected back in Nigeria on Saturday, August 31.”

In the wake of the release, the leader of the proscribed group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, has directed his followers in Japan to “arrest Buhari” and hand him over to Japanese authorities.

IPOB has been designated a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government, therefore their activities are regarded as terrorist activities.

Recently, they have attacked the former deputy senate president, Ike Ekwermadu in Germany, threatening to attack any South eastern leader or governor that travels outside the country.

Kanu has been in a war of words with the Ohaneze president, Nnia Nwodo, over the former’s claim that Nwodo is working against the interest of Biafra.

It was reported that south eastern leaders cancelled their travel overseas out of fear of attack by IPOB.

By Uche Mbah

Senator Dino Melaye, who was earlier today sacked by the election petition tribunal in Lokoja, has dismissed the ruling, saying that even if he won the case, the other party would have appealed.

In a reply sent to The Source, Dino insisted that he will soon be governor of Kogi state.

“No cause for alarm at all”, he wrote. “Even if it went my way they will still go to the Appeal Court.

Our mandate cannot be taken. We will get judgment at the Appeal Court.

There will be fresh election in Kogi West because I will be Governor.

For my Senate mandate no shaking. I can not be distracted. Focus is my name.

All Kogites should remain calm and peaceful as their mandate is very secured”. he concluded.

This magazine was one of the earliest to break the news of his removal by the tribunal.

Melaye is contesting for the governorship position against the incumbent governor, Yahaya Bello.

In his own reaction, Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress have also indicated that he will do a counter appeal to ask the appellate court to out-rightly declare him winner of the election instead of going through another election.

Fowler: FIRS Boss Certificates Are Fake- UK Authorities

0

By Bayo Bernard

Dr. William Babatunde Fowler, the chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, has escaped many booby traps set on his path by his traducers since he was appointed into that position by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

But his enemies seem not to have abandoned their plot to rubbish him yet.

Thus barely a week after the former chairman of the Lagos Internal Revenue Service was queried by the chief of staff to the president, Abba Kyari over presidency’s perceived discrepancy in the revenue generated into the federation account in the last four years by FIRS, a new flank has been opened in the controversy surrounding Fowler, an associate of APC leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The FIRS boss is said to be parading fake university certificates.

The allegation was first made in 2016 by popular social critic and Professor of Journalism at Kennesand State University, Georgia Farooq Kperogi.

The activist, on Tuesday August 2, reiterated the allegation which he posted in his official social media pages.

Fowler claims in his curriculum vitae, CV that he holds a honorary Doctorate Degree from the Irish International University, IIU, United Kingdom.

He also claims to have obtained his master’s degree from the California state university and his first degree from the University of Wisconsin, both in the United State of America, USA.

But Kperogi said Fowler may not have obtained genuine certificates.

“I fear that if this Fowler’s other certificates are looked into, a big scandal may break out. His Bachelor’s degree, for instance, is said to be from the University of Wisconsin and his master’s degree from California State University

The trouble is, University of Wisconsin and California state universities are multiple campus universities: you can’t just say you attended the University of Wisconsin without mentioning the location.

The University of Wisconsin has 26 campuses and California state university has 23 campuses.”

Therefore, looking at Dr. Fowler’s certificate, “something is fishy here,” Kperogi said in the allegation.

Few years ago, the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC conducted an investigation to ascertain the authenticity of the Irish International University where Dr. Fowler claimed he obtained his honorary doctoral degree, at the end it was discovered that the University was not accredited by UK education authority.

Sean O’Foghlu, chief executive  officer of the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland told the BBC that before IIU can use the “ the word university in a title, it needs approval from our Department of Education and Science,” but that “no such approval has been given by our department” to the Irish International  University.

The BBC later discovered that Quality Assurance Commission-UK Ltd, the body that purportedly accredited the IIU, is a private enterprise, owned by Professor Hardeep Singh Sandhu, a Malaysian business man who’s also the President and Chief Executive of the University.

The BBC, in the report, later concluded that Fowler and many other students may have been scammed by the university.

“Although the organization is unaccredited, hundreds of students have been given educational visas to enter Britain and take it exams at private colleges in London.

The IIU, which has 5000 students worldwide and thousands of graduates, maintains the illusion of a valid education through its elaborate but highly misleading website,” the BBC said.

In March this year nine employees of the Service were arrested by the EFCC over fraud.
