2023 Presidency: Arewa Youth Clamours For Southern Presidency

0

By Akinwale Kasali

There seems to be a crack in the Youth Wing of the Northern Arewa Youth Forum.

Contrary to the call by the Yerima Shettima led Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AYCF, that a Northerner must emerge as the President come 2023, there seems to a wind of change, following the call by the Arewa Youth Consultative Movement, AYCM, that come 2023, they are pitching their tent and openly supporting a Southern Candidate.

The Group said the bane of Insecurity, strangulation of government work, corruption, disregard for the rule of law, marginalisation, nepotism and the trampling on the fundamental human rights of the ordinary citizen has become the order of the day in Nigeria today by the All Progressives Congress, APC, led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The AYCM stressed that they were supporting a southern presidency in 2023 because the northern political elite had failed the North and Nigeria. The group said a South-South presidency in 2023 would be desirable.

In a press conference at the Arewa House, Kaduna on Thursday, the spokesman for the group, Abdullahi Balarabe, said the North needs to allow other geopolitical zones space to also govern, adding that a youthful southern president remained the choice of the youths of the North in 2023.

He said, “It is obviously clear that our country is on a threshold, and the crossroad to which we have found ourselves is very pitiable.

“The issue of insecurity, strangulation of government work, corruption , disregard for the rule of law , marginalisation , nepotism and the trampling of the fundamental human rights of the ordinary citizen has become the order of the day .

“These anomalies that have stunted our growth as a nation since independence is clearly as a result of misgovernance occasioned by the selection of favoured incompetent persons into the helms of affairs.

“Elections are not free and the issues of our common interests have been thrown to the dogs .

“There is no even distribution amongst the various classes of citizens in terms of leadership.

On New year’s day, a Group under the  coalition of Youth Groups in the North had suggested a power shift to the southern part of the country, particularly, the South-South geopolitical zone in  2023, which has also been affirmed by AYCM.

Kwara APC In Crisis As Minister Battles Gov

By Tosin Olatokunbo

The All Progressive Congress, APC in Kwara State will no longer be the same again.

Not after Senator Gbemi Saraki has openly challenged Governor Abdulrahman Abdul Razak to an open duel over the demolition of her late father’s property and taking over of same by the same government.

She called on President Muhammaed Buhari to quickly intervene before things got out of hand.

Recall that her brother, immediate past Senate President, Bukola Saraki has also criticised the governor over the matter

The state government, in the wee hours of Thursday, demolished Ile Arugbo, a property used by late Senate Leader, Abubakar Olusola Saraki, during his lifetime to bring succor to the less privileged in the state.

But Gbemi, who’s also the minister of Transportation, on Friday told the governor to stop destroying the legacies of her late father for political exigencies.

Her statement has opened a crack among APC leaders who formed alliance to defeat the PDP’s long hold on power in the state last year, watchers of Kwara politics say.

Her criticism of Governor Abdulrazak, critics say,  has left the APC in shambles and that the party may never remain the same again.

Here is the full text of Gbemi’s statement lashing out at her governor.

“As a staunch and loyal member of APC, I have kept quiet to date on the happenings in my state, Kwara State. I had done this for a number of reasons including trying to “keep my head when all about me are losing theirs”.

But all in all, I had kept quiet, as being a loyal member and supporter of the party, i did not want to get into any squabble with the Governor despite so many provocations.

Again, as a loyal and dedicated daughter of my father, Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki, whom I hold in very high esteem, I did not want to express my opinion on the propriety of the Governor’s recent political actions as it would be seen as biased because the late Waziri is my father.

However, given the turn of events and the violent nature of the Governor’s position, it is only right for me to speak now.

There might have been some elements within my party, APC, who wanted to change the ‘O To Ge’ narrative of the 2019 elections to be about the Sarakis, and not about what it was — the removal of a failing PDP Administration.

But clearly by some recent steps taken, especially with Thursday’s actions, Kwara State APC must be careful to not allow a few elements with their own agenda, other than governance, to turn their personal vendetta into the official position of APC in the State.

They must not be allowed to hijack the narrative of what our party stands for.

The APC has, since its inception, preached and worked earnestly for genuine good governance, security, increased welfare, progress and development of the people, as exemplified by President Muhammadu Buhari, who in the face of direct provocation and deep personal attacks remains true to the oath he took to govern ALL Nigerians, in spite of allegiances.

That is why it is important that my silence is not misconstrued as tacit approval or support for the actions taken by the Governor.

As stated earlier, I chose to refrain from commenting on the onset of this land saga and did so for three reasons:
(1) I believed that this was a matter that would go through the rightful forum and due process to ascertain and establish my father’s legal rights or otherwise.
(2) My family individually and/or collectively have NEVER derived and continue not to derive ANY commercial benefit from that piece of land.

At the end of the day, what is on that land is nothing — no block of flats that the family is getting rent from; no office building, no factory, or any other commercial venture. Just a bungalow where the old women gather and get their basic needs attended to.

(3) Nonetheless, were my father alive today, surely, he would have been saddened to see bulldozers in Ile Arugbo. However, I am comforted by the knowledge that my father’s good work and his respect, support and love for the aged, which was sadly lacking in the Governor’s activities of Thursday, simply cannot be erased by demolishing a bungalow.

When it comes down to it, Ile Arugbo is a piece of bare land that holds symbolic value of what my father stood for — humanitarianism, and that doesn’t start nor end with a building.
But after the events of Thursday when the aged women were tear gassed and shot at in the wee hours of the morning (3:00AM), I do not want my silence to be misconstrued, as mischief makers have used that silence to attribute false statements allegedly made by me.
The level of force and violence that the Governor chose to adopt was totally unwarranted.

What resistance to protest justifies firing live ammunition and tear gassing old women? Even my own personal home was not left out of the attack as numerous empty bullet shell casings and dispersed tear gas canisters were found inside my home.

I feel that at this point not only as a child of the late Waziri but as a member of the APC, I need to speak.
I do so not only as a daughter but as a member of the party, to ensure that those thousands of members of APC who are Sarakites that supported the ‘O To Ge’ Movement are not alienated. In addition, I do so to ensure that the resounding victory that APC enjoyed in Kwara is not short-lived or diminished.

Governments acquire properties, even compulsorily without necessarily resorting to unprovoked violent attacks in the dead of night.

It is especially disrespectful to me personally, as a member of the APC since 2015, who welcomed and supported those who only joined us a couple of months to the elections, which includes the Governor himself, that my position as a member of the party was not given any consideration and/or regard when approaching this issue.

Furthermore, given how well and how long I have personally known the Governor beyond Kwara State, so much so that I have always regarded him as one of my older brothers.

Even in the political arena, over the years, we have known each other as political opponents and allies and I have always accorded him respect which he has not accorded me.

As one of the APC leaders in the State, I have consulted broadly and have also sent messages appealing to party members not to be provoked by this unwarranted assault on my late father.

I do this with all sense of responsibility so that party cohesion and unity is not undermined by arbitrariness to rush into an attempt to settle perceived old generational family political scores.

Revenge cannot be a policy thrust of governance.
I am also using this opportunity to appeal to our teeming supporters to remain calm and poised and maintain peace in the face of unwarranted provocation. “Allah Bring about ease after difficulty” Q 65 vrs 7.

I condemn in totality the actions taken on Thursday 2nd January 2020 by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, especially unleashing terror and mayhem on innocent defenceless aged women simply exercising their right to peacefully protest.

I call upon the Inspector General of Police to call the State Commissioner of Police to order — using security agencies and live ammunition to settle political and personal scores is NOT what the Buhari Administration is about.

We must stand up against vindictive politics, driven by envy, motivated by jealousy and practiced without integrity.
Honour should be our code.”

Qassem Soleimani: Oil Prices Surge, Israel Raises Alert Level As Iran Summons Emergency Security Meeting

By Uche Mbah

The killing of the Iranian National Guard commander, Qassem Suleimani, has triggered a lot of international ripple effects, including the surge of international oil price to $70 per barrel, and Israeli raising of security bar on all borders, with many fearing this might just be the trigger that will kick-start a global war that may result in many deaths and culminate in a feared world war.

Pentagon has owned up responsibility for what the Iranian leader, Ayotola Ali Khomeini, called an Assassination, and has said Iran will have to start a devastating war. Iran has summoned an emergency security council meeting.

Soleimani was the mastermind of Iran’s Military strategy for years.

Critics of President Trump, who only tweeted the American flag in reaction to the killing, all but accuse him of playing politics with the lives of Americans to present the facade of a strong man-a gimmick, they claim, aimed at winning the next election. Indications are that Trump may not have consulted intelligence reports before ordering the attack.

Killed with Soleimani was Abu Mahdi Al Mohandis, Iraqi militia commander. This has tended to forge a greater tie between two former enemies, who have now vowed to unite in the fight against the American imperialism. Shiites all over the world, including Nigeria, are mourning his death.

Reports indicate that Israel has beefed up security at the Palestinian border in anticipation of violent reactions targeted at the Israeli nation. This is as the Hezbollah is threatening fire and brimstone over the killings.

The strike has precipitated a surge in Oil price to nearly $70 per barrel amid fears that the largest oil basket may face serious crisis in the immediate future. America has promised air strikes on oil installations as a follow up to Soleimani’s death, though Iran has been reeling under a barrage of sanctions from the United states.

There has been as yet no official reaction from the Nigerian government, though the government has been having a running battle with the Shiites group through the detention of their leader, Ibrahim el Zakzaky.

By Uche Mbah

The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has reiterated the determination of the Federal government to open the runways of Enugu Airport to traffic for the Easter traffic in April.

Skeptics have taken the earlier promise of reopening the airport by April with a pinch of salt taking into account the controversial circumstances under which it was closed.

The Airport was closed without putting in place structures for its renovation. It was after a series of complaint that N10 billion was approved by the presidency for the work. Sirika then vowed the work will be ready for the Easter holidays.

Since then, Enugu Passengers have been diverted to Owerri and Port Harcourt. Port Harcourt has recently got a facelift.

According to Henrietta Yakubu, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria spokesperson, “Sirika, who spoke while on an inspection tour of the Airport,  noted that because of the strategic importance of this airport to the South-Eastern region, the Federal Government carefully contracted the project to a reputable construction company (Messrs PW Ltd) and that the contractor has given assurance that the project will be completed before Easter.

“Stating that the new international terminal being constructed at the airport will also be completed before the end of the year, Senator Sirika noted that Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), Air Field Lightning (AFL), Taxi lights and other key deliverables are also parts of the project,” Yakubu said in a release.

The demolition of Ile-Arugbo, a property owned by Second Republic Senate  Leader and father of Kwara politics, late Abubakar Olusola Saraki has united the family of Oloye, as he was fondly called by his supporters, against Governor Abdul Razak Abdurahman led Kwara state government.

The feelings in the late politian’s family has marked the level of condemnation that greeted the demolition.

Prominent politians and individuals in the state have trenchantly criticised the unpopular action of the APC government.

The property located in GRA, Ilorin l, the state’s capital was demolished in the wee hours of Thursday by officials of the state government.

The government had earlier revoked the land from the Sarski’s family, because the land documents, it claimed was not properly filed.

The magazine had witnessed a massive protest on Wednesday at the GRA, where the property was located, by angry old women opposing the demolition.

In spite of this the government still went ahead claiming the decision was in public interest.

But in a swift reaction to the incident, immediate past Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has criticised the action as a vendetta by the state’s government, to obliterate the legacies of his late father.

Following in tow, is Senator Gbemi Saraki, the minister of state for Transportation who has criticised the action of the state government.

Gbemi is a member of the All Progressive Congress, APC, the ruling party in the Harmony State, as Kwara is widely known.

The incident, the magazine learnt from party sources in the state, will affect the harmony in Kwara APC as well as the relationship between the minister and Governor Abdul Razak.

The two politicians were among the alliance formed by political blocs in the APC which led to the defeat of PDP led by Bukola, Gbemi’s brother and a former governor of the state.

It was however learnt that the rival siblings have now formed a united front against the governor for declining entreaties not to demolish the property.

The property, the state government said, will now be used for the construction of a state secretariat.

ECO: How Backlash From The Removal of Arikana Chihombori-Quao As AU Ambassador To US Put Macron On The Spot

0

By Uche Mbah

Facts are beginning to emerge on why the French Prime Minister, Emmanuel Macron, did a volte face on the issue of the Eco, the west African common currency, dragging the eight Francophone Countries into the Eco -to have a measure of control-a situation he was said to have sabotaged because the Francophone countries would have to jettison the CFA, the French currency, for the Eco, thereby destabilizing more than fifty years of stronger colonial chains over their victims through the back door.

It is believed to have been linked to the sack of Arikana Chihombori-Quao, the African Union Ambassador to the United States under controversial circumstances.

Last year, Chihombori-Quoa presented a scathing criticism of Europe and, especially France, on their role in the impoverishment of the African Continent. She cited the pact that France went into with the former colonies, where France forced them to agree to deposit 85% of their National income with the French Central Bank to be managed by the French Finance minister and invested in the french stock market by the French government, while the Francophone countries have to only apply for their own money as a loan, which only about 20% can be approved. According to her, any African leader that comes up with any resistance to the status quo will be assassinated and overthrown by french backed groups.

This exposition was embarrassing to the French government, and it was believed in some quarters that the world powers put pressures on the African Union to recall and sack Chihombori-Quao. they appeared to have succumbed to such pressures when eventually she was recalled from the US and relieved of her duties.

But rather than douse tension, there erupted an avalanche of protests and demand for her recall by several groups of African American. Many African leaders joined in criticizing the decision of the AU to sack her. John Rawlings, a former president of Ghana Head of state, was particularly piqued.

“The dismissal of Arikana Chihombori-Quao, AU Ambassador to the United States raises serious questions about the independence of the AU”, he tweeted. “For someone who spoke her mind about the detrimental effect of colonisation and the huge cost of French control in several parts of Africa, this is an act that can best be described as coming from French controlled colonized minds. How can this shameful behavior emanate from us?…How can this continent progress?’, he querried.
It is believed that her position gingered the ECOWAS sub-region to fastrack the 30 years old negotiations so that the french colonies in west Africa will severe themselves from the CFA. Hence Macron had to strike a balance “so that he will not lose all”, an analyst told the magazine within the week. “He didn’t have a choice in the matter, really”.
Ghana had immediately welcomed Macrons decision, but Nigeria has said nothing other than that they are studying the issue.
