With shortage of doctors and Abuja under under lock down, hospitals in Abuja are being forced to evict doctors from their quarters as such quarters are to be used as a quarantine center for Covid-19.

A distress letter released by a Lagos based human rights Lawyer, Richard Akinola II, on his Facebook page indicated that the doctors, house officers, are being literally thrown into the streets without any provision during a period no one will admit them into their home.

“We’ve just been given a 24-hour eviction notice by the hospital management to leave, so our hospital will be used as FCTA isolation center for COVID-19 treatment. This is the inhumanity doctors are subjected to in a city on lock-down”, the letter read.
“Some of us are not primary residents of Abuja and have nowhere to go. We’re here for our housemanship for which some of us are yet to be paid after four months on the job in a city with a prohibitive cost of living as Abuja. We deserve better than this inhuman treatment from the bourgeoisie ruling this country.”
Below is a copy of the letter of eviction. This is a developing story…

Former Super Eagles left back, Ifeanyi Udeze, believes Odion Jude Ighalo is a lucky man, and should maximize his present opportunity. “Don’t let it slip”, he warns.

Udeze says at 31-years of age, Ighalo needs to amass the needed wealth as age was no longer on his side, imploring him to extend contract with his parent Chinese Super League Club Side, Shanghai Shenhua Football Club, who are willing to pay him 400,000 Pounds weekly, rather than pitching his tent with English Premier League side, Manchester United Football Club who are paying him lesser.

Ighalo receives a paltry £100,000 weekly wages from the Red Devils, having accepted a pay cut on joining the English Club on loan from his Parent Club.

The Ajegunle-born Ighalo is yet to determine his future, as Manchester United are pressing to extend his loan deal.

Udeze is of the opinion that Ighalo shouldnt allow this opportunity pass him by, as no Club will be willing to pay such huge amount for a 31- year old player.

“We are in this game to make money, so i will strongly advise Ighalo to return to China to make his money as age is no longer on his side”.

Udeze represented Nigeria at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and Korea, 2002 and 2004 African Cup of Nations tournament in Mali and Tunisia.

The former West Bromwich Albion Football Club and PAOK Salonica defender made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2001.

Veteran Nollywood Actor and former Broadcaster, Sadiq Abubakar Daba’s health has deteriorated. If not properly attended to, he may lose one of his eyes.

Daba had been diagnosed with Leukamia – Cancer of the blood – and Prostate Cancer in November 2017, which, since then, had seen him off the movie radar.

Olutade Simon, a journalist, took to Twitter to announce Daba’s State of health saying it has worsened over these few weeks. “He is on the verge of losing one of his sight”, he alerted.

Simon, however, used the avenue to ask for an urgent help for the ailing actor.

The Journalist asked Nigerian politicians such as the Vice President of the country, the Lagos State Governor, and the governor of Ogun State to come to the help of one of the veterans of the movie industry, who is presently dying,  and in need of help so as to be back on his feet.

In 2015, the Professionalism with which Daba interpreted his roles in movies won him  the Africa Movie Academy Award, Best actor,  for his role as “Inspector Waziri” in the movie “October 1″. It was directed  by Kunle Afolayan.

Daba has been hospitalized, for over one year,  due to leukemia and Prostate Cancer.

COVID-19: ERA/FOEN Warns Gov. Makinde; Slams BATN

Governor Seyi Makinde

As Nigeria battles to contain the raging deadly Pandemic, Coronavirus, the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN), has warned that smokers are at a higher risk of developing fatal complications from contracting the virus than others.

In a statement issued by the Group through  Phillip Jakpor, the Group’s Head, Media and Campaigns, it said that while there is currently no conclusive evidence that people who smoke tobacco are at higher risk of being infected with the virus, researchers have confirmed that people who smoke are at greater risk of other respiratory infections than others.

The World Health Orgnisation (WHO) has similarly warned that because   smoking involves repeated hand-to-face motions, it creates a route of potential viral transmission, like the current COVID-19.

It stressed further that in view of the growing number of donors seeking to support government efforts to combat the spread of the virus, the Group cautioned government at all levels from receiving donations from tobacco companies, saying such gestures are hypocritical of an industry whose products are directly and indirectly fueling the pandemic.

According to the group, the largest study investigating the link between COVID-19 and smoking published to date looked at clinical outcomes from 1,099 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection from 532 hospitals across China.

The research, it said discovered that 12.4% of current smokers either died, were admitted to an intensive care unit or required mechanical ventilation, compared with 4.7% of non-smokers. Along similar lines, 21.2% of current smokers had severe symptoms, as opposed to 14.5% of non-smokers.

Jakpor added that several countries have taken far-reaching actions to prevent imminent upsurge of smoking-induced fatalities as the COVID-19 virus rages on.

For instance, Russia has banned the use of Hookah (Shisha) in all public catering facilities.

“On March 16 the Governor of Cairo banned Hookah (Shisha) in cafés and restaurants. Other nations that have equally banned Hookah in the last one month are Iran, India, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Oman, Turkey, Uzbekistan and the United Arab Emirates, among others.

“There is therefore, no other time than at this period of the pandemic for smokers to quit and for the government to enforce strict adherence to the National Tobacco Control (NTC) Act, 2015”.

The Deputy Executive Director of the Group, Akinbode Oluwafemi added that an outright ban of the sale of cigarettes, vaping products, Shisha, and the likes will be a step in the right direction during this period.

Oluwafemi, however, stressed that last weekend, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that vaping may leave users with underlying health conditions thereby putting them at higher risk of serious complications if they contract COVID-19.

Experts from the U.S. National Institute of Drug Abuse and the Secretary of State of the United Kingdom also say that smokers will suffer worse impacts if they contract the virus.

ERA/FoEN, while also reacting to media reports that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde is already in talks with some companies, including the  British America Tobacco Nigeria (BATN),  to make donations to tackle the spread of the pandemic in the state, said  any donation from BATN or their front groups are “Greek Gifts”.

These “Greek Gifts” are ultimately targeted at compromising public officials, weakening heath systems and positioning the tobacco industry as a credible stakeholder in public health policy.

ERA/FoEN, however, expressed sadness that Governor Makinde is making overtures to a company that is reported to have flagrantly flouted government directives on gatherings involving many people when it refused  to shut down its production lines, putting its factory staff at risk.

Rather than shut down production and protect lives, media reports say a boss of BAT West Africa, allegedly sent a message to staff saying: “I would like to particularly thank and pay tribute to both our heroes in the factory who are keeping production going, and our Field Force that are using all their ingenuity and track relationships to keep the supply chain intact as restrictions mount.”

“This company has demonstrated sheer recklessness for the well-being of their staff and demonstrating that it puts profits above the lives of its staff; this company should be under investigation. This has further proven that as recommended in the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control’s Article 5.3 which Nigeria is a Party to, it can never and should never be seen or accepted as a stakeholder in tackling public health problems”. Oluwafemi counseled.

Boko Haram: Disquiet In the Military, Generals To Go

0

By Fola James

The past few days has been a very challenging one for the Nigerian Army in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency.

As a result, the DHQ has now drawn up a plan that will see some top military officers either retired or moved from their current positions.

The situation in the military is very tense, a source in DHQ told the magazine.

Just three days ago, Maj. General Segun Adeniyi revealed in a viral video that the insurgents possessed more weapons capability than his troops.

Two days after, Adeniyi has now been removed as the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole.

He was replaced by Maj. General Faruq Yahaya.

Other top commanders and GOC have also been redeployed according to thecshake up announced by DHQ on Tuesday.

Adeniyi’s removal came amidst last week’s casualties suffered by the Nigerian Army in the hands of the insurgents.

Over 40 soldiers were killed in that incident after Boko Haram ambushed some troops in Borno, the epicentre of war against insurgency in the north east.

It was learnt that the DHQ is not happy with the current development, particularly, the Gen. Adeniyi video, where he said his troops lack weapons to fight.

The General also lamented failed intelligence on the part of the Nigerians troops, this he said has been responsible for consistent casualties his troops suffered in the hands of the insurgents.

Apart from Adeniyi, some commanders and General Officer Commanding, GOC have now been moved to new areas.

“This is to strengthen the fight against Boko Haram and reinvigorise the troops,” a senior Army commander in Borno told the magazine on Wednesday.

The Nigerian Army has in recent times suffered huge losses in the fight against Boko Haram due to lack of intelligence, sufficient weaponry to match the insurgents and neglect of troop welfare, analysts say.

Lockdown: Chaos, Anarchy May Arise; Some Foreign Nations Reportedly Evacuate Citizens

The stay at home order given by the Federal government without palliatives may drive many people into anger and rebellion as they face the choice of contacting coronavirus and dying of hunger.

Many field reports show that a great majority of Nigerians are on daily earnings, and cannot feed their families unless they go out each day.

Federal government had imposed a sit at home order to Nigerians living in Lagos and Abuja. It included Ogun state in the order because of the proximity to Lagos. Incidentally, these three states have already started a phased sit at home process. But the presidential announcements forced Nigerians to crowd Banks to beat the twenty four hour notice, thereby negating the social distancing order and endangering more Nigerians than was intended. Banking Halls were crowded, ATM Machines were overcrowded and Banks groaned under panic withdrawals.

Markets became over crowded with consequent hike in prices of food items.

After zero day, no few people were coming to buy food items, making sellers cry about raising prices because of fear that suppliers will not be supplying them during the period. And sales plummeted during the lock-down.

Bus conductors and drivers may not survive one week of not plying their trade, according to research conducted by this Magazine using two parks at Alimosho area of Lagos.

Meanwhile, there has been reports of foreign diplomatic missions asking their citizens to leave Nigeria. The Israeli government, for example, was reported to have effected full evacuation of citizens.

Even Countries with high Covid-19 epidermic are also leaving.

Nigerians, however, believe that they are leaving  because of the security reports that the Lock-down will degenerate into chaos because of lack of palliatives and hunger.

Meanwhile, in Kano, a viral video showed many Almajiris forming a mob and chanting “no Coronavirus” demonstrating against  closure of mosques. In Katsina, such a group had marched to a police stations and burnt it down.

No lock-down was declared in these states, giving the impression that Nigeria may have become a coronavirus time bomb.
