The Complete Story Of Agunwa, Nigeria’s Second COVID-19 Casualty; Why, And How He Died

0

By Charles Igbo

Chief Chris Aguwa Osuagwu was young, and upwardly mobile. He had quite a chunk of money. And invested here and there, including the hospitality industry.

His most prominent investment, for which he was popular in his native state, Imo, is his Fancy Hotel located in new Owerri. The hotel is the toast of many.

But he had his draw-backs and challenges.

In 2012, he escaped death in the hands of alleged assassins. And, even though he escaped death, the bullets pumped into him left a permanent damage.

It affected his heart and, allegedly, his kidney.

Perhaps, because of the damage done some to his organs, he often travelled outside Nigeria for his medicals. He was a constant, almost, in Germany and South Africa.

Incidentally, his last visit was to South Africa, before his death in Abuja from complications associated with the raging disease, Coronavirus.

His death, however, became enmeshed in  politics and controversy.

It also caused a lot of anxiety, and fear, amongst his family members, friends, associates, but worse, also amongst his staff members and guests to his hotel.

On return from South Africa, Osuagwu visited Owerri, as usual, and was  at his Fancy Hotel where he spent a couple of nights before he went to Abuja, where his wife and children reside.

He took ill in Abuja after he had stayed for sometime. Sadly, he passed on.

That was when the problem began. As soon as his state of health and  subsequent death became public, the Imo State Government did the most sensible thing any government could do.

They sealed his hotel, and quarantined all the workers and members of Staff therein. The Government, also traced all those who had any form of contacts with him Owerri – his two brothers. They were quarantined.

But that was when panic, fear and politics set in – in his state, Imo.

Initially, nobody knew what to believe. Many speculations set-in. Some said he knew his COVID-19 status, and  deliberately visited the state, and especially his hotel to spread it.

But the question is: Why would he deliberately want to spread the disease and destroy his business, especially, his family?

Others said the state government knew of his status, and covered up. On his death, in Abuja, the state government and the boss of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, incidentally, an Imo State son, were accused of  deliberately conniving to hide the facts of his death from the public. A demand was even made to the effect that both the Imo Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, and Ihekweazu; should resign from their offices.

The questions: Was the state government aware of his presence in the state? Did it smuggle him to Abuja? When it knew of his circumstances, did it not take action? Did the government not seal the hotel, and quarantined the guests, and all those that had any contacts with him? What else remained to do?

Indeed, some others said Osuagwu died in the hotel. One man, who claimed to be an eye witness, swore he saw Osuagwu’s body as it was being evacuated from the hotel in an ambulance, accompanied by medical and security personnel.

Not true.

The truth is: the ambulance and the other people were at the hotel to seal it, and quarantine all those inside.

But, finally, respite has come. There is good news. All is well that ends well. And not a few Imo people,  including  government officials, are breathing easy.

All those quarantined in the hotel tested negative for COVID-19. And so did Osuagwu’s wife, children, relations, driver and friends and associates.

On Saturday,  the Imo State Government, through the Hon. Commissioner for Information and Strategy,  Declan Emelumba Mbadiwe, announced the good news of the clean bill of health given everybody. He, also, used the opportunity to clarify the issues surrounding Osuagwu’s ill-health and death from COVID-19.

Following, excerpts from the Government’s statement.

“Of late, spirited attempts have been made to heighten the anxiety of Imo people over COVID 19 pandemic by spreading misinformation and bare faced lies over the death of one Chief Aguwa Osuagwu. It is necessary, therefore, to state  the facts as they are, and reassure all Imo people that the  death of the said Osuagwu should not be any cause for alarm in the state.

“FIRST: It is true that the said Osuagwu came back from South Africa, not U.K or Europe as some have averd, where he went for medical check.

“SECOND: When he visited Imo after his South African trip; he did not have the virus.

“THIRD: He was suffering from a complex heart condition resulting from a  gunshot on his chest around 2012. This eventually affected his longs.

“FOURTH: lt was in Abuja, long after he left Imo state ,that he tested positive of the virus and died some days later.

“Instructively his wife and children who were with him in Abuja, and the driver who drove him around even while he was coughing, have all been tested of the virus and they are all negative.

“FIFTH: The staff and guests who have been quarantined in his Fancy hotel in Umuguma, owerri, where he visited while in owerri, have been released today, Saturday, April 4th, exactly 14 days of their isolation, because they have also not tested positive of the virus.

“SIXTH: Even two of his brothers he visited in the village while he was in owerri, have tested negative to the virus.

“From the above simple, verifiable narrative, it is clear that the probability that anyone who came in contact with him in owerri could have been exposed to danger of COVID 19 was almost absent.

“However, it is noteworthy that the government did not take anything for granted. Instead, in  a prompt proactive fashion typical of the Uzodimma led government of Imo state, the government moved promptly,  and sealed his  Fancy hotel, and equally sealed  his village , because he visited these places while in town.

“The truth of the matter is that no one in Imo state was exposed to COVID 19 danger because of Osuagwu’s peculiar severe health conditions which culminated in his ending up as a COVID 19 victim.”

Few weeks after United Kingdom Prime Minister, Boris Johnson tested positive to the deadly Pandemic, Covid-19, Carrie Symonds, the pregnant fiancee of the UK Prime Minister revealed today she spent the past week fighting coronavirus.

Her revelation came days after Johnson went into isolation with the deadly pathogen.

‘I’ve spent the past week in bed with the main symptoms of Coronavirus”, she said.

“I haven’t needed to be tested and after seven days of rest, I feel stronger and I’m on the mend”, she added.

‘Being pregnant with Covid-19 is obviously worrying. To other pregnant women, please do read and follow the most up to date guidance which I found to be reassuring,’ she said in a second tweet.

Kogi: Scandal Rocks Govt Over Rape Allegation Against Commissioner; Bello Sets Up Panel

Commissioner rape allegation in Kogi State

By Akinwale Kasali

A Commissioner on Kogi State Government is enmeshed in a scandal that will make or mar Governor Yahaya Bello’s Government.

Bello’s Commissioner for Water Resources, Abdumumini Fangs, has been accused of assault and rape by a young lady.

Raking up the scandal is Elizabeth Oyeniyi who not only alleged that Commissioner assaulted her, she insisted that HE took her to a hotel where he had carnal knowledge  of her against her will. Meaning: She was allegedly raped by Commissioner Santa.

A scandalised Governor  Yahaya Bello, has, therefore, set up a panel to urgently investigate the allegations against Danga.

Oyeniyi had accused the commissioner of assaulting and raping her over her Facebook post on March 29, 2020, where she  alleged that Danga was not taking care of his sibling, who happens to be Oyeniyi’s friend.

The post infuriated Denga who Oyeniyi allegedly said ordered his boys to hunt for her.

Oyeniyi was said to have been apprehended by Denga’s boys. Brought before him, she alleged, the Commissioner ordered his boys to beat her black and blue. She was also stripped naked.

Thereafter, she said, she was ordered  to apologise to the commissioner, along with her friend, the Commissioner’s half-sister.

The 23-year-old Oyeniyi added that the commissioner then took her to a hotel and raped her all night.

Recounting her ordeal, She said, “I left Abuja for Okene to stay with my friend because of the spread of the COVID-19, and on getting there, she explained to me that the commissioner, who is her step-brother, had not been taking care of her.

“I saw a post made by a local comedian showing the commissioner distributing foodstuffs to people, and I made a post that charity should begin at home and that the commissioner should take care of his household before taking care of outsiders.

“The comedian saw the post and screenshot it, after insulting me in the comment section, for making that kind of post.

“An hour later, some guys came to my friend’s house to pick us up on the instructions of the commissioner and they took us to Lokoja.

“On getting to Lokoja, I was beaten up by the commissioner and his boys; I was asked to strip naked and a video was made and my friend and I were made to apologise under duress to his fans and him that what I posted about him was wrong. He later took me to a hotel for the night and forcefully had sex with me.

“I have been living in fear of what they might do to me, because they threatened to pour acid on me and take my life. The commissioner is threatening me to come out and drop the case. I want justice to be served, because he treated me like an animal and said nobody would fight for me.”

The allegation has set the mainstream and social media on fire, forcing Governor Bello to swing into action, ordering an accelerated investigation into the case.

The state Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, in a statement said that the governor was shocked over the incident and has ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter.

The statement read in part, “The attention of the Kogi State Government has been drawn to the allegations of assault, battery and other serious crimes levelled against Abdumumini Danga, who is a serving commissioner in Kogi State.

“It was alleged that he was involved in the alleged abduction and assault of a woman, which allegedly occurred in Lokoja recently.

“Governor Yahaya Bello, who is an avowed advocate of the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens, and especially within the boundaries of our dear state, is shocked by these accusations.

“The governor hereby assures the accuser and the accused as well as the general public that the whole truth will be uncovered and justice served as appropriate.

“The Kogi State Government reaffirms its unalloyed commitment to the protection of everyone from all forms of oppression and will not tolerate violence against women or children under any form or guise.

“We give our word that if these allegations are proven, everyone found culpable will be brought to justice.”

At the time of writing this, Commissioner Santa has not made any statement, but Miss Oyeniyi’s allegations have not only outraged the public, Civil Society and Gender-based groups have taken the case up on her behalf.

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State is a sad man.

Ugwuanyi and the entire people of Enugu State have been thrown into mourning over the death of Professor Anthony Ugochuwkwu, the State’s Commissioner for Health.

The State, battling to curtail the spread of the deadly Pandemic, Covid-19, has now been thrown into mourning.

The renowned surgeon was said to have died Friday night at a leading private hospital, Memphys Hospital Enugu.

The development was confirmed by the House member representing his constituency, Oji River,  in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Jeff Mbah.

Mbah described the late Surgeon as a Genius and a Technocrat.

His demise, he said would be a great loss to both Enugu state and Nigeria.

“We are talking about a renowned Professor of Surgeon who has a lot to offer in turning around out health sector. It’s a terrible blow.”

He disclosed that the commissioner just came back from the United States, and was fine before the sudden relapse.

The late Professor Ugochukwu has been sick from his days as the Provost, College of Medicine.

He later recovered and concluded his work in the College.

However, shortly after he was appointed a commissioner last year, the sickness returned, this time more severe.

While  the coronavirus, raged, the commissioner was out of circulation.

His duties were being carried out by the permanent secretary in the ministry of health, Dr Ifeanyi Agujiobi.

COVID 19: UN Scores FG High, S/Africa Struggling

By Fola James

Some Nigerians have expressed their frustration over the ongoing effort of the federal government to contain the novel corona virus pandemic, but from unusual quarters, came yesterday, for the Buhari-led administration, accolade that so far the situation has been well managed.

At least three persons have died of the disease with over 200 persons now tested positive for the deadly virus, according to the National Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.

Among those now carrying the virus are notable government officials, including President Muhammadu Buhari chief of staff, Abba Kyari.

Three state governors, Seyi Makinde of Oyo state, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state and Nasir el Rufai of Kaduna state are among state officials that have tested positive.

The NCDC said it’s still tracing over 6000 others persons to know their status.

But far away in the United States of America, the Secretary General of the United Nations, UN Antonio Gutteres has commended the federal government for taking proactive measures to stop the disease from spreading across the country.

He said the world and indeed, Africa can draw a lesson from Nigeria on how to contain the virus.

While speaking at a virtual news briefing in New York, the United States on Thursday, Gutteres said Nigeria has shown capacity to arrest the killer virus.

The UN scribe singled out Nigeria as one of the developing countries that have “shown a remarkable capacity to respond to the coronavirus.”

He said Nigeria has shown to other countries in African battling the disease, that the disease can be stopped form spreading.

Guterres said “I have to say this; some of these developing countries have shown a remarkable capacity to respond.

I was quite impressed to see, for instance, Nigeria putting in place and immediately establishing a hospital.

And I saw difficulties in countries that are much more developed to do quickly the same.”

Close to 8000 persons have already tested positive for the virus in Africa and over 360 have died through the virus.

South Africa has the highest number of cases in the continent, according to UN figures.

Soyinka Under Fire; “You Think Your Culture is Superior, Practice Paganism; Takes Northern Establishment As Adversary” – Adamu Adamu

0
Adamu Adamu

By Gideon Njoku

Professor  Wole Soyinka is not a coward. He neither runs away from a fight, nor controversy. He does not suffer fools gladly, either. He is known to have taken on  every government in Nigeria – at the Federal level.

During the 2015  Presidential election, he shocked not a few people by lining up behind the eventual winner, then Geberal Muhammadu Buhari, against the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

The shock stemmed from the fact that during Buhari’s first outing as Nigeria’s Head of State, Nobel Laureate Soyinka had no use for him. Autocrat, dictator, a human rights abuser, were some of his opinion of Buhari.

So, in 2015, what changed? Why did he back Buhari? Why did he get himself into a romance with him?

Some people say he did that in support of his friend, Chibuike Amaechi, Minister of Transport, and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, APC National Leader. Both are known to be close to him.

But Soyinka, at the time, said he would back Buhari because he had been told the man who he previously held up as a dictator had become a democrat.

But things have since changed. A leopard does not change its spots. Soyinka has gone back to his familiar terrain, a terrain where he is most comfortable with. He has gone back to criticising President Buhari and his government at every drop of the hat.

At first, they ignored and endured him. But, the endurance seems to have boiled over. And the government seems to be gradually baring its fangs.

Nothing confirms this than the response to him by a Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu. President Buhari had, in a bid to stave off the spread of the pandemic Coronavirus, shut down the Federal Capital,  Abuja, Lagos and Ogun states. But Soyinka had disagreed with the President, insisting he had no right to do so, especially, as Nigeria was not at war.

Conscious of the weight Soyinka’s words carry across the globe, the Presidency unleashed Garba to tackle him.

He did, in a stinging manner, which even hovered at mocking Soyinka. Garba reminded Soyinka that the business at hand was more serious than  fiction-writing, and better left for Medical Doctors and Scientists. He asked Soyinka to wait, and write a fiction at the end of the crisis.

Soyinka’s response was to call Garba a Government propagandist.

Wole Soyinka
Professor Wole Soyinka

The end then?

Hardly.

In the following strongly worded response, Adamu Adamu has taken Soyinka up as never before.

Not only did Adamu insist that Soyinka sees the Northern establishment as his adversary, he gives the impression that Soyinka has an exaggerated opinion of himself and superiority over others.

Here is Adamu in his own words:

“Professor Wole Soyinka, who appears totally ignorant of the most burning issue in international current affairs, betrays an unacceptable level of illiteracy on a related issue at home. On the issue of culpability for the origin of Boko Haram, Mahmud Jega says of Soyinka that he thinks he knows; Sam Nda-Isaiah says he doesn’t, and is hopelessly dead wrong; Mohammed Haruna says he only peddles pure rubbish. All the three are right, but the truth really is that he doesn’t even understand—and probably never will.

“This is because the tunnel vision with which he sees the country has been conditioned by three factors—an unfounded cultural superiority complex, a hubristic pagan worldview and an experience in which he saw the man died.

“The issue of Boko Haram merely gave him another opportunity to take on his imagined old adversary—the Northern Establishment, which he now holds responsible for the creation of Boko Haram. This is simplistic and laughable; but it saves this unready analyst the trouble of having to know the background to the situation, engage in serious analysis of the issues involved, draw the necessary conclusions and find a way forward for society.

“Certainly, a knowledge of the varieties of groups on the Islamic revival scene, which no one on the international scene should today be without, the fact that Boko Haram predated the Jonathan administration, and is confined to a corner of the country that is held by one of the opposition parties, and is opposed to all constituted authority including that to be wielded by the Northern leaders that were supposed to have founded it, would make Soyinka’s simplistic explanation all too obvious—and it might have been made to draw attention away from suspected US involvement.

“No doubt, Soyinka suffers from tribal hubris of which he needs to be cured. Going by the themes of his literary output, he seems to believe that his race is the greatest and the most cultured—and therefore, by implication, his pronouncements must be the best and the final word the world is waiting for.

“But what is this Yoruba culture in which people like Soyinka take so much pride? No doubt, his people love their language and love singing in it; they love their bodies and love waltzing them into a variety of dance forms. They love their lives and are always impulsively proud to say that they love the culture that has come to define the way they see themselves and view others.

“However, what Soyinka holds aloft is not culture: it is paganism; though it must be admitted that it is quite elaborate. But the possession of a pagan past is no accomplishment; it is a fact of history and every tribe has had one; and after the advent of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, there is nothing more to glory in animistic heathenism: it is there at the centre and origin of every type of primitiveness. The issue therefore should not be the promotion of the pagan culture of a distant past, but the cultivation of culturedness in present conduct.

“The proof and relevance of culture should be in its attitudinal pudding, measured by its practical moral utility in setting the standard of what is acceptable in human conduct; and not in the elaborateness of ancient idolatrous rituals.

“For us, it represented the sub-humanness of our primordial cultural history; and we are not proud of it, and nor are we any more captivated by its elaborateness or by the depth of meaning and the symbolism of its meta-paganism. Of course that is not to say that cultural mores are without meaning. Not at all. They may often in fact be too pregnant with a variety of meanings capable of interpretations; but their import is for a world that is past and gone—and better forgotten.

“Man’s cultural and social development have today passed the ignorance and obscurantism that paganism has to offer and the superficialities of the animus of those whose antipathy to divine values today finds expression in the cultivation and promotion of this new international pagan culture.

“But there is no superiority in paganism: there was nothing in Yoruba native forest theology that was more diabolical than the heathenism of the Savannah, where, in the Benue valley, there is magic that is blacker than Sanponno; and in Niger valley, a Satanism that is darker than Esu’s; and among the Maguzawa there are totems that, though benign, are no less occultist.

“The rituals of Tsumburbura were every inch as complex and elaborate as the possessed incantations of Ogun or the thunders of Sango, and no less diabolical. The Satanology of Santolo would beat every mumbo jumbo of Ifa Orisa divinations. The rites of Mai Barhaza would any day be more picturesque than the dance of the Egungun masquerade; and Babule and Dan Galadima more demonic than Ogboni totemism, and of women just as chauvinistic.

“In lasciviousness and pure voluptuary the Gelede Festival pales in comparison to the Dala Dance of unclothedness. In number, in hideousness of Satanism and in the comprehensiveness of misguidance Obatala’s 4,000-odd Orisas would prove no match for the fetishism and atheistic devilry of the numberless Iskoki of pre-Islamic Bahaushe. Or of the pre-Christian Tiv man, for instance. But all these are facts of which no one is today proud, or on account of which cultural superiority is assumed over others.

“Perhaps Soyinka’s—and Nigeria’s—problem lies in the fact that the Nobel Laureate considers himself an intellectual whose word the world looks forward to. And he is not. True intellectualism is not the mere fact of having been to school or teaching in one. It is all about being conscious, sensitive and aware of the circumstance and of one’s role in it and one’s readiness to sacrifice and suffer to make it better.

“You are either born an intellectual or you are not: it is an attitude that cannot be learnt; because education and experience only help to refine and sharpen an already existing predisposition—being analytical, being objective and being truly concerned. While some intellectuals choose only to expose a bad situation, others, in addition, fight to change it; and of these, those that succeed are those unencumbered by prejudice of the kind that Soyinka has always exhibited.

“It is not a quality that the receipt of an international prize—not even a Nobel—can confer on one; and a literary career based solely on the exploration of themes in Yoruba paganism is insufficient a social platform for someone like Soyinka, who is really not fully intellectualised, to articulate usefully on any of the many contentious national issues. That is why Soyinka is never known to have offered a solution that works; or that, when looked at closely, makes any sense. Of issues even within their areas of primary interest, they have no real knowledge—only fancy and conjecture and an overarching desire to belong to the cultural metropolis from which they unconsciously take their cue in spite of all the parroting of authentic Ogun-ness.

“Nigeria has changed from the closed society of 1964, but those unable to see, or are averse to seeing, healthy change in the nation have decided to cling to the uncreative fiction of the Wetie. And the fact that he is not understood—in his literature and in his analyses—and is therefore not generally effective shouldn’t mean that he doesn’t belong to that distinguished class of tribal jingoists and sectional propagandists; because even if his analysis is not clear—and is probably not even an analysis—his objective is always only too obvious, not least because, as far as the North is concerned, what he bandies about as analysis of its condition and role has remained unchanging over all these years.

“Three decades and someone has still not grown culturally or developed intellectually; and what a coincidence that Boko Haram also originated in Bo-ro-no State! Someone like him who has chosen the narrowness of a pagan worldview and eschewed the universalism of divine guidance or even that offered by objective secular multiculturalism will never taste the sweetness of true intellectualism. With a mind fixated on hatred and all muddled up with an incurable anti-Northern animus, it has become permanently set and is now a part of character, but too superficial and too ossified to be of any intellectual use.

“In our situation, it is not those who do not know who are lost, it is those who do not want to learn who are; and all those pretentiously bookish creatures whose knowledge is only from books are in reality ignorant even of them. Of this and of Boko Haram, he doesn’t really understand—and probably never will.”

Controversy Over 5G Link With Covid-19

By Uche Mbah
Controversies are raging on the veracity of claims that the 5G telecom Network may be linked to the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic, with western celebrities spearheading a demonstration against the Huawei pioneered project
Huawei, a Chinese telecom firm, has been at war with the United states standard certifications over the safety of the project in what many saw as underlying the trade war between the two superpower countries. China has been behind the company defending its integrity.
Reports has been rife on the radiation hazards created by the installations of the network. This magazine once reported on the perceived hazard posed to the environment at such installation sites. The Guardian of London, for example, reports that there are suspicions that the “telephone mast engulfed by fire in Birmingham was an arson attack as celebrities claim Covid-19 caused by new network.”
The belief is that radiations from the network was responsible for the pandemic coronavirus. The Guardian, however, called it a “baseless conspiracy”. So many anti 5G groups have been formed in the social media, including Facebook and Twitter. This has resulted in physical abuse of telecom workers who are installing the network. Some of the protesters query why installers of the masts use excessively heavy radiation protection jackets during installations.
Last November, telecom Giant MTN test-ran the 5G network in Nigerian states of Lagos, Abuja and Cross River states. This was done even before the Nigerian communications commission, NCC, approved the project for mass use. This followed the test run in South Africa.
Coincidentally, the three states are having high rates of covid infections, though Cross river may be contesting their own figures.
5G is a fifth generation telephony which is expected to be so many times more efficient than the 4G brand. There has been reports that the installation of the masts in Netherlands have resulted in heavy death toll of avian species of animals.

Uproar As FG Receives Chinese Experts, EU Countries Reject Chinese COVID-19 Equipment

By Uche Mbah
Alleged plans by the Presidency to invite Chinese experts to Nigeria to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic has met with swift criticisms by Nigerians who see it as dangerous and counter productive, considering that the disease broke out under controversial circumstances in china. Besides, all EU countries are rejecting Chinese equipment sent to help in tackling the deadly pandemic.
The pandemic, which is approaching the million mark for infected persons, has particularly ravaged Spain and Italy. America is said to have recorded over five thousand in deaths, though skeptics are questioning the numbers, which sees more of the elderly with other complicated illnesses in high number.
Besides China, Europe and America appears t have sinister plans for Africa, with Nigeria as the arrow head.
Reports indicates that a Coronavirus vaccine has been discovered in France. but a viral video shows two French doctors suggesting in Open television on decisions to test the Vaccines first in Africa, as they allegedly did with the Aids vaccine with African Prostitutes because they were exposed.
The same song is song by Bill Gates, the Microsoft Billionaire, who has been insisting that the Covid Vaccine should first be tested in Africa before implementation worldwide. this has generated anger among Nigerians on Social media. Africa is the least infected continent, making many wonder why she is chosen over highly epidermic areas.
In recent times, Bill Gates Foundation was allegedly thrown out of India for dangerous Vaccines. Bill had vaccinated thousands of young Indian girls but the vaccines were said to be trials that ended up being very injurious to the victims. The Indian Government was said to have sued Gates.
BBC has reported that “a number of European governments have rejected Chinese-made equipment designed to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

“Thousands of testing kits and medical masks are below standard or defective, according to authorities in Spain, Turkey and the Netherlands”, the report said.
According to BBC, “the Dutch health ministry announced it had recalled 600,000 face masks. The equipment had arrived from a Chinese manufacturer on 21 March, and had already been distributed to front-line medical teams.

“Dutch officials said that the masks did not fit and that their filters did not work as intended, even though they had a quality certificate. Spain and Turkey also rejected the equipment sent to them.

Imo: Uzodinma, Ihedioha Clash Over IGR

0
Uzodinma and Ihedioha

By Charles Igbo

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, and his predecessor, The Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, are in a tango. Both men clashed over the true state of Imo’s Internally Generated Revenue, IGR.

The clash is a consequence of a recent pronouncement on the IGR, by the state’s newly inaugurated Commissioner for Information & Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba.

Speaking on the state of the monthly IGR, Emelumba said it has doubled. According to to the Commissioner, it has risen from a disappointing monthly N620 million, during the Ihedioha administration, to a whooping N1.2 billion Naira, monthly, since the Uzodinma era. Meaning that the Governor has, since he stepped in, been doing a number of things differently to up the ante.

Miffed by Emelumba’s presentation, Amanze Obi, PhD, incidentally, a former Commissioner for Information during the Governor Ikedi Ohakim administration, and the Director General of the Ahiajoku Cultural Centre under the Ihedioha administration, and, now, the Coordinator, Re-build Imo Media, dismissed Emelumba’s pronouncement as fiction, and a figment of his imagination.

In a strongly worded press release, signed by him, he reeled out the monthly IGR under Ihedioha , and said his reaction was to set the records straight.

From his analysis, the state’s IGR has neither fallen below where Ihedioha left it, nor increased astronomically.

Following, excerpts from Obi’s press release, entitled:

Re: State of Imo Finances: IGR – Setting The Records Straight

“Recently, the Imo State Commissioner of Information, Hon. Declan Emelumba, declared that the Hope Uzodinma administration, has witnessed increase from the N620m IGR, it claimed that the administration met when it came into office, to N1.2 billion Naira within two months in office.

“These claims are false.

“The truth of the matter is that the State Internally Generated Revenue as at 31st December, 2019 stood at N1,184,745,471.87 gross, made up of N988,314,351 from Treasury Single Account, TSA, N143,411,750.00 from IMSU and N53,019, 370 from Motor Licensing Administration.

“The gross revenue for the month was  subject to 20% statutory deductions for, 1. To develop Institutional and Manpower Capacity for IIRS and, 2. For the provision of the Technology for  Integrated Tax Management System (e-Central Billing System), which was contracted by the State government, to exploit the tax potentials and expand the Tax Net.

“Other possible deductions are cost of collection of revenues by specialised MDAs that engage expertise of professionals beyond  their regular staff.

“Perhaps, the N620m referred to by Emelumba, may have been the half January  IGR of the state as at 14th Jan 2020 when the new govt  came into office, and not as at December, 2019 IGR of the state.

“It is, therefore, important, that the present administration sticks to the norms of good governance by being truthful with the state of finances of the State.

“The Ihedioha administration, in a bid to meet up with the onerous  task of rebuilding the State, undertook proactive measures to boost the IGR of the State which yielded salutary result.

“Within its seven months in office, such measures translated to rapid increase in the IGR of Imo State totalling N6, 406, 195, 252.83 and positively aroused interest and consciousness of tax paying individuals and business units in the state of the Services of IIRS.

“A breakdown shows:

July 19- 369, 622,398,64

Aug 19- 534,840, 342.59

Sep 19- 786, 785, 047.12
