Covid-19: Why Spend NBillions On Cars When We Have No Hospitals?

The outbreak of COVID-19 has been a dangerous yet revelatory moment in Nigeria.  It is dangerous because this deadly pandemic has infected over a million and killed thousands of citizens of our planet. No one seems to know when and how it will end.

But COVID-19 is also revelatory, a blessing in disguise, because it has exposed Nigeria as a country where quality of leadership is of low grade.  What we have known but has been denied for so long is now shown to us as an incontrovertible fact: that the quality of leadership in our country must improve.

In the midst of poor-quality leadership, however, Nigerians must speak in laudatory terms about Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, his Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, and his entire team for rising to the occasion.  For right or wrong reasons, Lagosians have been critical of his government since its inauguration on May 29, 2019.  But it must be admitted that with a population said to be close to 15 million, if Gov Sanwo-Olu and his team had not provided outstandingly exemplary leadership, we would have had a more dangerous situation in our hands.  At the risk of making a hasty judgement, it is to be placed on record that, as at the time this is being written, Gov Sanwo-Olu and his team have largely prevented the spread of the virus in Lagos.  Let us pray for them and encourage them so that they will continue to show exemplary leadership to other political office holders in Nigeria.

COVID-19 has also revealed to us that, rather than invest in good health care service delivery in Nigeria, we have a political arrangement that makes it possible, even encouraging, to waste Nigeria’s money on government officials and health tourism abroad.  Thanks to our country’s constitution dubbed federal, government in Nigeria is embarrassingly big, sinfully expensive, prone to corruption, and scandalously inefficient.   Nigeria cannot adequately invest in the sectors of health and education   because, among other reasons, the constitution of Nigeria has established offices that will require an endless flow of petrol-dollars to maintain.  By the time low-grade leadership combines with big government and the seemingly irresistible tendency to steal and or waste Nigeria’s money, you find a country whose hospitals are reduced to mere consultation rooms.

It is therefore insufficient for our legislators to forfeit their salaries for two months, as they have offered.  It is also unsatisfactory for Senators to donate half of their salaries to tackle COVID-19.  The humongous basic salaries and allowances of our political office holders should become a thing of the past.  The money should be used to establish a regime of high-quality medical service delivery.  COVID-19 has revealed to us that if we do not do something positive about our hospitals in Nigeria, if we do not invest our money in medical research, we shall one day find ourselves in a situation where we cannot even board a flight out of Nigeria to go on medical tourism.  Let us make hay while the sun shines.

To those who say they do not to know what the clamour for restructuring is about, the outbreak of Coronavirus has revealed an explanation.  Nigeria needs to restructure the relationship between her government functionaries and her citizens.  The current constitutional structure provides for too many offices because it puts in place a government that is too big.  Constitutional restructuring is a necessary condition for the production of high-quality governance.  But if we continue to run the affairs of our country with a constitution that impoverishes and disables the citizens by establishing offices that do not serve the people, then we would not have learnt good lessons from this pandemic.

We are spending billions buying brand new cars for our political office holders, paying them sundry allowances, when we have no good hospital to handle the current emergency.  Government impoverishes Nigerians, and, the same government has now decided to spray raw cash on the people it impoverishes.  On prime-time television, we witnessed the spectacle of bales of naira notes, and a minister of the Federal Republic was doing the distribution.  But government could and ought to have used this moment to encourage Nigerians to open bank accounts.  A more transparent means of giving out the money would have been to ask each person for his or her bank verification number and to send the money into their accounts.  Apart from the fact that it would have encouraged more Nigerians to open bank accounts, it would have made it possible to account for every naira that is given out.  In the same vein, we have heard how billions of naira are being donated to government without government telling Nigerians how the donation will be spent.

COVID-19 has also revealed to us that there are false prophets living among us.  In a country where once you grab a Bible and a microphone you become a pastor or prophet or apostle, where you can become founder of a church without any serious theological formation, we have seen how some of our religious leaders have resorted to dishing out false prophecies.  We have been treated to the cruelty of conspiracy theories woven by attention-seeking pseudo-apostles to nurture fear in the minds of people.  We have seen how those who did not foresee any pandemic when, at the beginning of the year 2020, they claimed to be “prophesying” for Nigeria, now lay claims to have received a message.  Rather than join the government in providing palliative measures, we have also seen how some pastors have been asking their members to pay tithes even when those members are unable to venture out to earn their daily bread.  Some who ventured out were brutalized by policemen and soldiers who are not held accountable for violating the rights of citizens they are paid to protect.  Can’t we reason?  Let us think!

Indeed, COVID-19 has been a blessing in disguise.  It has exposed the falsehood and hypocrisy we call politics and religion in Nigeria.  May Nigerians become sufficiently wise to read and interpret the signs of the time.  For a stitch in time saves nine.  Having taught us the hard way, may this pandemic go to bed early, never to rise again.

Banire’s Bombshell: “I Have left APC. I have Ceased To Keep Bad Company”

0
Muiz Banire

By Gideon Njoku

Here is the news, as relayed by Muiz Banire, SAN, in an interview with Sunday Punch.

*APC may not survive President Muhammadu Buhari.

*His relationship with the APC National Leader, no thanks to political scavengers is facing challenges, and it has been challenging to gain each other’s confidence.

*He has quit from the APC and, so, ceased keeping bad company.

*His removal as AMCON Chairman was illegal.

*It is irresponsible for the Lagos House of Assembly to spend the sum of N2.4 billion on cars.

*Says he stopped handling Election cases because of the ungodly things done there. “I don’t want to be contaminated in that regard.”

He warned Ambode, but he did not listen.

You would recall that Banire, was a two-time Commissioner under the Lagos state administrations of Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola. Later, he became the Legal Adviser to the APC, which foundation member he is.

When things could no longer hold together at the Lagos APC, he was in the opposite side with Tinubu. Speculations were rife that it was the reason why he was removed as the Party’s legal adviser.

But, President Muhammadu Buhari compensated him by appointing him the Chairman of AMCOM, a plum job by any stretch of imagination.

A couple of months ago, however, Banire was unceremoniously removed from AMCON.

Sad, over it?

No, says Banire, revealing that it came at a time he was already tired of the job, as the pressure on him to bend the rules, even from his colleagues in the Bar, was getting at him.

The senior lawyer also reveals for the first time, that to avoid bad company, he has quit the APC.

Banire: “More than a year ago, I think I have ceased to keep what I call bad company. As far as I’m concerned, I have left the Party officially, because I am a man given to the rule of law. Once I don’t see rule of law exist anywhere, I quickly take my leave because I won’t wait till the house collapses on my head. I am not one of the scavengers in the political arena.”

Comparing the leadership styles of APC Chairman – Bisi Akande, Odigie-Oyegun, and Adams Oshiomhole, he described the tenures of Akande and Oyegun as glorious. Both listened, he submitted. Oshiomhole, he said, is the opposite, and hardly listens.

Looking at the APC, Banire said he had doubts about the survival of the Party after Buhari. “There is no unity. There is no United front. The foundation is shaky.”

Banire, even though he said he does not take interest in the happenings at the Lagos House of Assembly, which currently is undergoing a crisis, dismissed,  as irresponsible, the idea of splashing the sum of N2.4billion on cars.

Asked to comment on the fate of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Banire seems to have no sympathy for him.”He refused to consult. He isolated himself. If you want to do iconic project, go and look for external funding for that. The funds you have are not enough for basic things. I advised him. At the end of the day, I became vindicated. I warned him.” Ambode was denied a second tenure as Governor of Lagos state by the APC.

He did not also spare the judiciary. Asked if there are cases he refuses to do, he quipped: I decline cases a lot. I find some immoral, and against my principles and conscience.”

Election cases?

Banire: ” I have not, (of recent) because that field is becoming so much contaminated for me. As much as possible, I have refrained, because some of the things I see there are ungodly, and you don’t want to be seen or counted along in that regard.”

UEFA Champions League, Europa League To End by August, UEFA President Declares

UEFA Europa League

By Akinwale Kasali

Union of European Football Association, UEFA, President, Aleksandr Ceferin, and members of the UEFA board have reached an agreement that the UEF and UEFA Champions League as well as the Europa League for the 2019/2020 season must end by August 3, 2020.

Confirming the agreed date, Ceferin said it must end by August 3 as the latest possible date for the 2019-20 Champions League final.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to a prolonged hiatus for sport in almost every country, with the European football system impacted on an unprecedented scale.

Many of the top leagues have been suspended indefinitely and the pause forced UEFA to postpone Euro 2020 by 12 months, buying the club season a little more time.

The target is still for the 2019-20 campaign to be concluded by the end of June, but many doubt that is realistic, giving rise to debates about what will happen if the pandemic fails to ease.

Ceferin has, at least, attempted to offer clarity for the Champions League and Europa League campaigns, with cancellation seemingly on the cards if the competitions cannot be concluded by the start of August.

The UEFA president, also, indicated potential alterations to the knockout stages are under consideration.

“It must finish by August 3, both the Champions League and Europa League,” Ceferin told German broadcaster ZDF.

“It is an extraordinary situation we are in, so we are flexible on dates and kick-off times. If the crisis eases earlier, then we can start sooner.

“We could play with the current system, or in one-off matches played on neutral turf. For now, it’s just an option to play with a final eight or final four.

“The only wrong decision we could make now would be to play in a way that puts the health and safety of players, fans and referees at risk.

“However, if we are in secure conditions, then I don’t see the problem.”

In a letter to clubs across Europe this week, UEFA stressed that domestic competitions shouldn’t be abandoned just yet.

“We are confident that football can restart in the months to come – with conditions that will be dictated by public authorities – and believe that any decision of abandoning domestic competitions is, at this stage, premature and not justified,” UEFA President Ceferin, ECA chairman Andrea Agnelli and EL president Lars-Christer Olsson stated in a letter sent to leagues, clubs and national associations.

“A joint management of calendars is strictly required as the conclusion of the current season must be coordinated with the start of the new one, which may be partly impacted because of the overstretch.

“Closely following the development of the current situation, the calendar working group will indicate as soon as possible, and ideally by mid-May, which of the plans can be enacted for the completion of the season without leaving anyone behind.

“It is of paramount importance that even a disruptive event like this epidemic does not prevent our competitions from being decided on the field, in accordance with their rules and that all sporting titles are awarded on the basis of results.”

COVID-19: Why World Bank Shunned Nigeria; Excludes Country From $1.9B Aid

0

By Kayode Samuel

Was Nigeria really expecting to be included in the list of nations to benefit from the World Bank’s $1.9bn COVID-19 response fund?

Our surprise at being excluded from the fund made me recall a joke that made the rounds in the late 1980s of an encounter between the then Nigerian President Ibrahim Babangida and the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Babangida had met up with the Iron Lady on the sidelines of a major international conference and raised the issue of Nigeria’s huge debt overhang. As the leader of a major western country, Thatcher was in a position to exert some influence. So, she asked Babangida to state Nigeria’s case.

After rehashing the usual hard luck story of low GDP per capita, huge population, misery index and the rest, he concluded by saying that Nigeria would make no headway economically unless it received debt forgiveness.

Margaret Thatcher was said to have cleared her throat and told him, “First, Mr. President, to owe money is not a sin so asking for your debt to be forgiven is not the appropriate language. International creditors are not clergymen, so they won’t understand your seeking forgiveness for owing them. Secondly, your country is not poor. It will be hard to convince any of your creditors to write off your debts”.

When Babangida asked why she said Nigeria wasn’t a poor country, she just stared intently at his wrist without uttering a word. Babangida was confused for a while and then it struck him. Seated coolly on his wrist was the latest Rolex Oyster Datejust watch, said to trade then somewhere in the six figures. And on Thatcher’s wrist was her trademark plastic wristwatch that she had worn since her days as a freshly elected MP. The discussions terminated at that point.

You can’t be ordering cars worth nearly $120,000 each for your MPs and still want to be included amongst the world’s indigent and needy countries. It doesn’t work that way!

Funke Akindele and Her Husband Bello

By Akinwale Kasali

Mixed reactions have trailed the birthday Party held at Funke Akindele’s Amen Estate Residence at Ibeju Lekki for her husband, Abdulrasheed Bello, popularly known as JJC Skillz.

On Saturday April 4th, 2020, celebrities thronged the residence of the Bellos to celebrate Funke’s hubby despite the Social distancing and lockdown order by the Federal and State Governments.

The social media has, since then, been awash with criticisms against the Bellos and other celebrities that went to felicitate with them. They say the Bellos and the other celebrities present are role models to the youths, their fans Nigerians and brand ambassadors to different companies in the country and shouldn’t be flouting government order.

Celebrities present at the Party include: Naira Marley, Eniola Badmus, former Lagos State Gubernatorial Aspirant, Babatunde Gbadamosi among others.

Over 25 people attended the Party.

Many called for the compulsory quarantine of everyone who attended the party.

They also expressed disappointment in Gbadamosi for attending the party.

According to them, the former governorship aspirant has always been the first to criticise the government’s approach since the outbreak of the virus in the state.

The reactions of the Social Media users are highlighted below;

@FatimaAkanbi

You’re always the first to criticize the government, which I’m not against. You even posted something on social distancing.

But I’m surprised it’s still the same you that just violated social distancing rule. You attended this party yesterday and I’m disappointed in you, sir! https://twitter.com/bogbadamosi/status/1246373989016109057 …

COVID-19: English Premier League Postponed Indefinitely

English Premier League

By Akinwale Kasali

The earlier announcement made by England Football League Association that the suspended Barclays English Premier League will resume on April 30th, 2020, has been aborted.

The EPL had been suspended due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Now, the English FA has rescinded its  earlier decision, and postponed the resumption date indefinitely, in a new statement.

In a meeting held on Friday by the FA and the Clubs, it was unanimously decided that the League be suspended indefinitely.

The Premier League originally postponed matches until April 3 amid the spread of the coronavirus. Later, it was pushed to April 30.

The Premier League, which is the most watched and publicized League in the world has also donated £20million to support the National Health Service.

The clubs unanimously agreed to consult their players on the prospect of taking a 30 per cent pay cut to protect club employees. The Premier League also voted to advance funds of £125m to the EFL and National League amid fears clubs that some clubs could fold.

“It was acknowledged that the Premier League will not resume at the beginning of May – and that the 2019/20 season will only return when it is safe and appropriate to do so,” the statement said.

“The restart date is under constant review with all stakeholders, as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic develops and we work together through this very challenging time.

“The Premier League is working closely with the whole of professional football in this country, as well as with the Government, public agencies and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the game achieves a collaborative solution.

“With this, there is a combined objective for all remaining domestic league and cup matches to be played, enabling us to maintain the integrity of each competition.

“However, any return to play will only be with the full support of government and when medical guidance allows. The sporting and financial implications for Premier League clubs as well as for The FA, EFL and National League were considered at today’s meeting.

“In consultation with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the Premier League is immediately committing £20 million to support the NHS, communities, families and vulnerable groups during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This includes a direct financial contribution to the NHS and funds to enable clubs to refocus their efforts and develop significant outreach programmes to help communities, including those most in need.

“In the face of substantial and continuing losses for the 2019/20 season since the suspension of matches began, and to protect employment throughout the professional game, Premier League clubs unanimously agreed to consult their players regarding a combination of conditional reductions and deferrals amounting to 30 per cent of total annual remuneration.”

Manchester United are fifth in the Premier League, in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and midway through their Europa League round-of-16 tie with LASK Linz. Manchester City are second in the league, also in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and midway through their Champions League round-of-16 tie with Real Madrid. City has 10 more league fixtures to fulfil while United has none.

UEFA also remains committed to finishing the Europa and Champions League campaigns.

COVID 19: FG, Dangote, Others Raise N500 Bn

Senate President Ahmed-Lawan

By Fola James

A whopping N500 billion intervention fund  will be needed to manage the Corona virus pandemic, the federal government has said.

“What we are looking at is a N500 bn intervention fund,” Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning told NASS leadership few hours ago.

The request came on the crest of calls by Nigerians to the federal goverment to make sure that funds allocated to COVID 19 is not mismanaged.

The figure excludes donations from individuals and corporate organisations.

African richest man, Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola, Mike Adenuga have made large donations to assist the federal government to fight the novel disease that has already killed three Nigerians.

Many corporate bodies such as banks and others have formed partnership with the government to stop the deadly disease from spreading.

Over 200 Nigerians have also tested positive to virus now known as COVIDC 19.

But during a meeting by the Minister with some principal officers of the two chambers of the National Assembly on Friday, the FG said a dedicated funds is required to manage the emergency.

Ahmed, a member of the presidential committeee on COVID 19 had sought the NASS understanding to expressly approve the N500bn request.

Recall that the House of Representatives has shown its readiness to pass a bill to grant electricity consumers a two month waiver as a palliative measure following the economic hardship induced by the pandemic

The Finance Minister met with Senate President Ahmad Lawan, House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, House of Reps Deputy Speaker Idris Wase among other principal officers of the NASS on the issue.

“This Fund that we are proposing, that should be created, will involve mopping up resources from various special accounts that the government as well as the Federation have, to be able to pull this N500 billion.”

Ahmed said the proposed fund need to be sourced from many sources which will require NASS approval.

Apart from COVID 19, the minister said part of the fund will be used to provide medical facilities in government hospitals across the country.

She said: “Our general view is that this crisis intervention fund is to be utilised to upgrade healthcare facilities as earlier identified.

“The Federal Government also needs to be in a position to improve health care facilities not only in the states but to provide intervention to the states.”

The proposed fund is expected   also to  take care of special Public Work Programmes being undertaken  by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE).

The federal government is seeking NASS understanding on the issue the minister said.

Ahmed “We know that there will be a need for the parliament to agree and approve the taking of loans from these special accounts and we will be coming back with a proposed bill in that regard that will define what the fund will be used for.”

The Senate President, while responding, assured the minister that all had will be on deck to combat the CIVID 19 emergency.

“Governance requires that we work together, so we want to listen to those things that you have on your side and how we can also play our constitutional role in ensuring that Nigerians continue to benefit from governance and how we are able to weather the storm created by COVID-19,” Lawan said

Adding that “Going forward, we need to interact more because very fundamental decisions will need be taken, and these decisions can only be said to be constitutionally legal if the legislature gives its stamp of authority for the executive to implement and execute.”

Adeboye: I Will Die Before My 100 Birthday

0

ByvFola James

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG has many wishes as a devoted man of God, one of them is not to be a centenarian.

Recall that the man many of his followers like to call Daddy GO had few years ago said, his last meal before he die will be pounded yam.

Adeboye who celebrated his 78 birthday last month was preaching today, during the church’s monthly thanksgiving, at the RCCG headquarters in Ebute Meta, Lagos, Nigerian.

He narrated how one man once approached him to pray with him his last prayer before he died.

This man was already 84years at the time, and had been told that he was going to die soon.

A prophet had told the man many years ago that he was going to be wealthy and achieve so many things after which he would now die, Adeboye said.

The has achieved everything the prophet said and was now ready to die as the prophet said, according to Adeboye.

“But I told him, his prophet was a great prophet but you have now meat a greater prophet,” Adeboye told the man.

He said the many lived many years after and “when he reached 100years, he came to me that he’s now ready to go,” the man of God said.

But “I don’t want to reach 100,” years, Adeboye said.

The man of God who peached on the topic ‘Peace’ said he has experienced many stormy situations in his lifetime, but was saved by God.

One of them, he said was when he was traveling from Heathrow, United Kingdom, UK and the plane he was travelling suddening entered storm.

Adeboye said all the passengers were sore afraid that the plane was going to crash and they were all going to die.

He said he remained calm all through because ” I have peace that passeth all understanding.”

The man of God said what the children of God needs at this time of the corona virus pandemic, is to remain calm, because everything will soon return to normal.

Gov. Bello Shocks The World, Says Coronavirus Is Politics And Deceit

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State
Yahaya Bello

By Akinwale Kasali

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, in a video  that is bound to shock the world, says  the CoronavIrus in Nigeria is full of politics, lies and fraud.

He insisted that it is an avenue for political office holders and corrupt officials to embezzle and steal the nation’s resources.

The Governor  made this comment in a post on his verified Facebook page, where he denied rumours that he tested positive for coronavirus after coming in contact with COVID-19 infected Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Kogi State Governor said: “Please stay at home and stay safe. I got NO COVID. It’s fake news. People of Kogi State, I love you all. Don’t mind the political aspect of COVID-19, maximum of 21 days, COVID-19 will disappear,” Governor Bello added.

The governor assured the people : “Not to panic, if you have catarrh (fluid), take hot water with garlic, ginger, lemon, lime and steam yourself, you will be good.

“There are a lot of lies and politics about COVID-19, I will not play with that. I will not play with my people’s lives or pretend and steal money because of this so-called pandemic. Please, stay safe.

“I’m good, strong, hale and hearty. If COVID-19 comes to Kogi State, you have a governor who will combat and defeat the idiot.

“I can assure you, 90 per cent noise about COVID-19 is political and material thing.”

In an earlier response denying  the rumour that he had contracted the disease, having come into close contact with the positive-tested Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Bello had rained curses on those who alleged so, saying God would inflict them with HIV – a statement that also shocked not a few decent Nigerians.
