By Akinwale Kasali

Allen Onyema, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of Air Peace Airline, has debunked speculations about his alleged Presidential ambition come 2023.

Onyema insisted that he is a businessman, who is not nursing any political ambition as is being speculated.

He said his humanitarian gestures stem from his desire to give back to society as his own contribution to humanity and Corporate Social responsibility and not a fillip to aspire to any political office.

Reacting to an Online Post that the United People of Nigeria Initiative, UPNI, has endorsed him for Nigeria’s Presidency come 2023, Onyema said it is all mere speculation as he has never nursed any ambition of running for any political office and, is comfortable being a businessman that he his.

Onyema said the endorsement by UPNI was made in bad taste.

He, however, disowned those behind the campaign and urged them to desist from it.

In a statement, Onyema said, “My attention has been drawn to an online poster by a group that goes by the name United People of Nigeria Initiative (UPNI) endorsing me for Nigeria’s presidency in 2023. One Sir Wealthson Chukwudi was exposed on the poster as President of the group.

“I wish to state clearly that this man, UPNI and its promoters are not known to me directly or remotely and whatever they are saying has not come from me and will never come from me. I am a businessman and not a politician.

“My purpose is to impact humanity and I do not have to be President first before I can continue with what has become part of my essence. This is my nature. My motivations are different.

“I call on the public to completely ignore this group and any other group or person/s that may come up with such message and mischief about me in future. I, personally, feel very offended by it all.

“I am very suspicious of the motive behind this unsolicited publication. Once again, I am not interested in partisan politics”, Onyema concluded.

Covid 19: Lagos Records 70 Cases In One Day

coronavirus

By Uche Mbah
Fears that the dreaded COVID-19 will explode in Lagos is increasing with the number of cases rising by 70 for the first time in a day out of a total of 86 cases nationwide.
Besides the 70 in Lagos, 7 new cases were discovered in FCT, 3 in Katsina, 3 in Akwa Ibom, 1 in Jigawa, 1 in Bauchi and 1 in Borno state. This brings the total number of cases to 86 in one day.
There have been palpable fears that Nigeria in the coming weeks may descend into a frenzied cauldron of fear due to the Coronavirus epidermic explosion. This was due to a reported dire prediction by Mrs. Melinda Gates, wife of the Microsoft guru, William Gates. Gates had resigned from Microsoft and is pursuing a controversial vaccine agenda worldwide. He had advocated for the vaccination and “enchipment” of everyone on earth, particularly in Africa against COVID 19. No vaccine has been officially found anywhere.
The lockdown efforts by the Nigerian government is allegedly being violated by the government themselves. Social distancing was thrown to the winds when the late Chief of Staff to the president, Mallam Abba Kyari, was buried. Though those who came from Aso rock for the burial were allegedly locked out of the Presidential Villa after the burial, a young actress, Funke Akindele, was sentenced to both fines and community service for hosting a birthday party in her house. A similar violation by an eccentric musician Naira Marly was shelved when his supporters stormed the court premises.
The lockdown has been confusing in its applications. While Lagos the Commercial center of Nigeria was locked down together with Abuja the administrative capital, the North remains unaffected by the lockdown. Besides, most of the palliatives have been sent to the North while Lagos has been allegedly ignored.
Lagos has been under siege by a cult of youths who branded themselves one million youths. They have been terrorizing the city amid harassments of Nigerians who cannot survive without daily hustle by law enforcement agents. In some states, more deaths have been recorded through brutal repression by the police and the army than by coronavirus.

Why Wike Panicked, And Released Oil Workers; He Crossed Borderline

0

By Gideon Njoku.

The sudden release of the 22 Exxon Mobil Oil Offshore staff from forced isolation, by the Rivers State Government, Sunday afternoon, took most people by surprise.

Nobody expected it, at least, not after the broadcast by the Governor, Nyesom Wike, a Lawyer.

Wike had, according to him, contrary to the advice of the leaderships of Security agencies in the state, insisted on the arrest, isolation and prosecution of the 22 Oil Workers.

The Workers, with Police escorts, were on their way to Onne Rivers State,  from Akwa Ibom state.

But they were, inexplicably intercepted by Security personnel, at Bori, a border town between  Akwa Ibom -Rivers state. All explanations, fell on deaf ears, even with a letter and Identity Cards which explained who they were, and their mission.

Recall that the Federal Government had excluded essential workers from any harassment. Such workers include, most importantly, oil workers and Health Personnel.

It is still hazy how Wike heard, or knew of their presence at the border town. Because, if the security agents had simply sent them back to Akwa Ibom, from where they came, (which they eventually suggested to the Governor), without making a mountain out of a molehill, the Governor would just have heard it as a story. And perhaps laughed over it.

But, the cup of the now removed Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Dandaura seemed full.

The CP had gone through that route with Wike during the Caverton Helicopters episode. Caverton had landed at the Airforce base, PH. Both the CP and the Airforce Commander, alerted the governor.

He arrived, and had the two Pilots and ten passengers,(passengers were Nigerians, not foreigners,as was erroneously put out), arrested, put in PH’s Correctional Centre, and arraigned before a Magistrate Court. They were there in detention for days, until they were granted bail, reportedly, because Aviation associations were threatening fire and brimstone.

The Governor did not stop at that, he declared the Company, persona non grata in Rivers State, and sealed their offices.

What aggravated the case was the reactions by the CP and and the Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika.

While the CP, shockingly, said that perhaps, they were sent deliberately to disrupt the peace in the state, the Minister was arrogant in his. He not only dismissed the CP and the Airforce Commander as ignorant, he also hinted that the Governor was also ignorant, telling him, like a headmaster would, that he was straying into an Exclusive List. Aviation, he began to teach Wike, was a Federal concern.

The main reason the CP lost his plum job in Rivers was his reaction to the Carverton incident. However, on Saturday, Wike hinted at peace efforts, waiving a letter of apology written to him by Carverton.

In the instant case, once Wike was notified, the situation took a larger than life dimension.

He had the 22 oil workers arrested, and swore that he would charge them to court after they would have been  through with their 14 days quarantine period.

Wike roared:” We will fight this matter legally. Exxon Mobil does not operate in Rivers State. That they have a point at Onne seaport does not mean that they operate in Rivers State. People in Abuja are not happy. They want Rivers State to be infected. They want to kill Rivers people, and I will not allow it.

People selling Ankra are being arrested in Lagos, but they want us to allow oil companies to flout the law.”

He also strayed into other areas which had no connection with and/or to the case at hand.

Condemnations over his language were like claps of thunder. The Rivers Leadership Advancement Foundation, RIVLEAF, accused the Governor of boastfulness and vengeance. Its Director of Communications,

Onyeche Peters in a statement said Wike’s action against Exxon Mobil was not in the interest of the state.

“Time and time again, Governor Wike speaks as if he had conquered the state, as if he is the owner, creator, and benefactor of Rivers State; he speaks as if he inherited the state from his father.”, Peters said.

But what may have forced Wike to walk back the road was the reaction from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association, PENGASSAN.  Those arrested were their members and the Chief Security Officer of Exxon Mobil.

Reacting, the Association gave the the RVSG until 12 mid night, Sunday, to release their members, or they would pull their members off work.

PENGASSAN’s threat, and the intervention by a number of high profile Nigerians, who reportedly intervened because, one, they felt the Governor was crossing the red line, and two, the implication of PENGASSAN pulling out its staff, did the magic.

The Governor was said to have put two and two together, and walked back his track.

Announcing their release, Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Zaccheus Adangor, said they were unconditionally released, and would no longer be charged to Court. He said he personally oversaw their release from the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Porthacourt.

Said, Dr Obinna Okafor, a public commentator:  “What is happening between the Federal and the Rivers State Governments is embarrassing.

Rivers State has its own Executive Order on movements due to COVID-19. There is nothing wrong in calling the Governor to notify him on such movements. These guys are on an ego trip”.

COVID-19 and Religious Conmanship in Nigeria

Chikwendu Christian Ukaegbu

By Chikwendu Christian Ukaegbu

Characteristic of her adroitness in journalistic communication, Comfort Obi posted a magnificent treatise in this magazine on March 29, 2020.  The piece titled, ‘COVID-19: Where Were the Clerics, Prophets, Seers?” x-rayed how the pandemic exposed the hollowness of the counterfeit religiosity and spirituality in present-day Nigeria.

She stated, “In the face of the outbreak of the Coronavirus, a respecter of nobody, there is a group of Nigerians who should bury their heads in shame. They should shut-up forever. This virus has exposed them for what they truly are-Fake. Exploiters. Blackmailers. Opportunists. ” That treatise which mirrored my longstanding objection to and disdain for the destructive religiosity and fake spirituality that prevail in much of Nigeria today deserves a sociological backing.

The high rate of poverty in Nigeria goes hand-in-hand with the rate of pseudo religiosity dominated by church ministers who hoodwink their congregations in order to achieve their rent-seeking objectives. Since the spread of the Pentecostal type of worship and preachers of prosperity theology, church ministers have used the opportunity of the ‘opiate character of religion’ to exploit the gullible poor to believe that giving their meager financial resources to the ministry assures them material success on earth and eternal bliss in heaven. Meanwhile, their pastors live in extreme opulence on earth. Not to forget that there are also rich people who patronize these churches. Sociologically speaking, Nigeria still is a theological society where recourse to the supernatural anchored in ethno-traditional belief practices or the received religions of Christianity and Islam, or both, dominate human thought and action.

Congregants do not question the fake miracles orchestrated by church ministers and their shameless collaborators whereby they use fake glossolalia (speaking in tongues) to mesmerize their congregations. In order to out-compete one another before their congregations and the public, flamboyant, rambunctious style of preaching prevails among pastors of these new-age churches and some priests called charismatics within the conventional denominations. Sermons assume cataclysmic, apocalyptic, and millenarian posture invoking the coming of Armageddon.

The Christianity of my generation in the Roman Catholic tradition taught us to shun, spurn, disdain, ignore and snub powers, principalities, demons and fetishes because they are incapable of exerting any effect on the person. But a lot of Christian ministers today including some Roman Catholic priests teach their congregations to fear these. Congregants are made to believe that all the problems in their lives–inability to secure employment, loss of one’s job, inability of young women to secure suitors, couples experiencing childlessness, bad marriage, failure in school, inability to feed oneself, family conflicts, and all manners of illness, are caused by demons planted around them by their enemies. Or that evil spirits find disfavor in some individuals and so inflict sufferings in them. In fact one of the counterfeit prophets proclaimed COVID ‘a demonic work’.

With fear come fatalism, defeatism, and irrational attachment to those who claim to be mediums between God and humans. The self-proclaimed mediums boast of answers to the imponderables of human existence. According to news accounts, victims, accomplices and eyewitnesses, many of these self-proclaimed ‘holy’ mediums that is, some church ministers, swim in deep swamps of immorality and crime yet their congregations continue to follow them as redeemers. This is because political leaders have failed to provide citizens the socioeconomic opportunities with which to escape from excessive attachment to the otherworldly. Escape from otherworldliness will expose them to the real source of their life troubles, namely, the elected and appointed political officials and their cronies who continue to swim in corruption, impunity, and incompetence that continue to harm the common people.  If prayer, sui generis, were the answer to personal success or national prosperity, people in the developed countries would be in prayer every moment of their lives. But that is not the case.

Nigeria has the highest self-report of daily prayer in the world with 95% of the respondents saying they pray daily. With the exception of China, people in developed nations pray the least. According to the PEW Research Center, the reasons why the U.S. has a higher self-reported daily prayer (55%) than other wealthier countries include the lack of government interference in religion and the resultant open religious “market” – where different religions enthusiastically compete for new members; and the relatively high levels of income inequality because societies with more unequal income levels tend to be more religious.

People in countries where certain religions require obligatory daily prayer, as in the case of Islam, are also more likely to report higher rates of daily prayer than those whose religions do not require such. That may be part of the reason for the very high report of daily prayer among Nigerians because a significant number of the population is Muslim. But prayer is prayer regardless of the religion. Most or all the countries in the Figure above out-perform Nigeria on the socioeconomic indicators used to assess the quality of life and the human condition, yet it is the most prayerful. Hence, Abel Olayinka rightly noted that: ‘While Nigerians and Africans were binding and casting Lucifer, Dubai went into massive infrastructural development. While we were praying, Singapore went into investment in technology. While we were speaking in tongues, Denmark went into education of its citizens’.

China where only 1% of the people say they pray daily aggressively pursues its national objective of massive industrialization and poverty reduction without recourse to religion or the supernatural.  Some years ago I had the opportunity to teach Chinese students in China. Most students in my classes told me they did not believe in anything not even in Buddha. Only the handful converts to Christianity said they believed in God. I came to understand why, apart from their monks, Buddhist Temples are filled more with tourists than the people of the community that house the temples. Yet China majestically marches to eliminate poverty by 2050. Therefore prayer and religiosity are not sine qua non of individual and national prosperity. Leaders of Nigeria who ask citizens to pray and fast for the betterment of the human condition in the country are lying, fatalistic and ignorant. They abdicate or outsource their responsibilities to the supernatural. Do not get me wrong. Religion is an important social institution with useful functions in society. But it need not neutralize personal responsibility, self-efficacy and rational thinking, essential qualities these fake prophets expunge from their followers.

Some Nigerian clerics live and preach in the world of reality, though. One of them a young priest who promotes payment of taxes over payment of tithes; he advises the federal government not to allocate funds for pilgrimage to Israel while health facilities in the country are unconscionably inadequate. There are other clerics in this category of which space does not permit here.

What has the above exposition got to do with COVID?  Why did the anointed men and women of God not see the impending destructive power of COVID in the first place? Ex-post facto, some of the ‘prophets’ predicted that the pandemic would end in March.  March 2020 ended a long time ago yet the number of Nigerians infected by the virus continues to rise. One of the ‘seers’ even declared that the pandemic would die just like the Ebola did. This false prophet can get away with this childlike declaration in a theological society with a stupendous number of poverty stricken people who are poor not because of their personal failings but because they are in a country where leaders do not love their citizens. Nigeria was not rid of Ebola by a wave of the hand or by an act of God.  Human agency, i.e. professionals in public health institutions with the right skills plus material and moral support from the government worked hard to rid the country of Ebola. COVID will exit Nigeria in the same manner, by efficient application of human agency. Bottom line, Nigerian religious leaders who dub themselves prophets are ‘Fake, Exploiters, Blackmailers, and Opportunists who should bury their heads in shame and shut-up forever’, as Comfort Obi rightly observed.

$40bn Debt: Paris, London Clubs Unfair To Nigeria- W/Bank

By Tosin Olatokunbo

The World Bank has described debt granted to Nigeria and other poor nations by Paris, London Clubs and other creditors as responsible for their underdevelopment. The world’s financial body said it’s now prepared to grant debt reliefs to these countries so that they can concentrate on dealing with the corona virus pandemic and other factors that stunt their growth.

“It’s not the best system for creditors to be making non-transparent loans into poor countries and this is going to improve the system,” said David Malpass, the World Bank president, at the ongoing April 2020 virtual Spring meeting of the Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Malpass also disclosed that China has also agreed to grant debt relief to Nigeria and other countries in the International Development Association, IDA.

The World Bank and the Exim Bank of China are Nigeria’s largest creditors with a combined portfolio of $11.46bn, according to data obtained from the Debt Management Office.

According to the DMO, Nigeria’s foreign debt stood at over $40 billion as at 2019.

The debt concession will begin from next month, the World Bank chief said.

He said “IDA countries will have bilateral debt relief beginning May 1. That way, they can concentrate their resources on fighting the pandemic and its economic and social consequences.

I take note that in the G-20 meetings, China is supporting the international agreement to allowing moratorium of debt repayments by IDA countries if they ask for forbearance.

That’s very important because China is one of the biggest creditors and their participation in that effort is important and was very welcome.”

According to him countries, such as Nigeria and Pakistan, are IDA-eligible based on per capita income levels and are also credit worthy for some IBRD borrowing.

They are referred to as ‘blend’ countries.

Malpass said the body will ensure that countries which receive debt relief are not allowed to mismanage such funds, that such should be used in providing life changing infrastructure.

He said “So if the government saves money by not paying creditors, there is an expectation that they use it for health, education, economic rebuilding, jobs and concrete ways to help the people of their country,” he said.

There is also within the debt relief initiative, the idea that there will be monitoring and assessment of the debt sustainability of poor countries.

Debt concession will be a win-win for creditors and debtors he said, adding “That process itself will amount to transparency.

That’s going to change the way that countries have been lending into the developing world and it will improve it substantially and there will be a big benefit even to the creditors.”

How Abba Kyari Shocked An Anglican Priest

0

By Geoffrey Onyeama

I first met Abba Kyari in 1977 at Warwick University in England. I had gone there to do law as a second first degree. He had come to do a degree in sociology. I had a pending application to do Law at Cambridge and when the result of that application came and it was positive, I left Warwick during the second semester.

But my five months at Warwick was enough to build a strong friendship with Abba that lasted till his passing. Almost 43 years!

There was a small group of Nigerians at Warwick then, which included former President Yakubu Gowon (who was doing a PhD in Political Science) ; Senator Osereihmi Osunbor (former Senator and Governor); Sitonye Roy Wakama (former Deputy Inspector General of Police) and the lawyer, Desmond Guobadia.

There were a few other Nigerians.

Abba was quite skinny in those days! We became friends very quickly and a life-long bond was formed.

Abba was very simple and humble. He was also very friendly with everyone. He had very litte interest in material things. We had a common interest in politics and I believe it was our socialist political values that cemented our friendship because we were always discussing politics and how to salvage Nigeria right up to his passing.

Abba was also surprisingly sociable for someone who was so self-effacing and we had a lot of enjoyable and memorable experiences at parties and discotheques! Abba also had a very good sense of humour belied by his often stern visage.

When I left Warwick University for Cambridge, Abba came to Cambridge to introduce me to his friends there as he had studied in the city for his Advanced levels. After graduating from Warwick University, Abba went up to Cambridge to study law. We kept in touch throughout the last 43 years. We ended up together in Lagos in 1982 to attend Law School for a year. When I left Nigeria in 1985 to work in Geneva for 30 years Abba came to Geneva, often, to stay with me and whenever I was in Nigeria, he made it a point of coming to see me wherever I was.

When I got married in Owo to my wife from Idoani, Ondo State, Abba was my Best-Man. The officiating Vicar was somewhat perplexed because I was a Roman Catholic Igbo, marrying an Anglican Yoruba in an Anglican church with a Muslim Kanuri/Shuwa Arab Best-Man from Borno State!

The officiating Catholic priest in Geneva, Switzerland, two years later, during the baptism of our first son, was equally perplexed when a muslim Abba Kyari and a muslim Muni Attah-Sonibare were the Godfather and Godmother respectively! Abba was a Pan-Nigerian, global citizen, who recognized no boundaries between peoples, be they racial, ethnic, religious, class or political. He made friends with everyone.

Abba was a man of unimpeachable integrity. Absolutely incorruptible! I remember after he got married to his wonderful wife, Kulu, he told me how he showed her his first paycheck so she would know that he was not wealthy and would not steal!

It broke my heart to see all the false allegations against him on issues of corruption. He showed me the safe in his office where he put any unsolicited gift .

I remember asking him about the rumours making the rounds that he was making money from the fine imposed on MTN. He immediately showed me the memorandum setting up the Committee to deal with the issue and he was not even a member. He also showed me how he had been able to block attempts by many influential and powerful persons to make a lot of money at the expense of the country. He knew that fighting corruption with such single mindedness and fearlessness would see him at the receiving end of the venom of very powerful forces but was undeterred and preferred to ignore all the defamation against him.

Abba was loyal to a fault. He decided he was going to protect his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, at all costs and would take any number of bullets for him. And he did!

Since he became Chief of Staff to the President, Abba never rested. He worked day and night, seven days a week. He was a hard taskmaster who did not suffer fools gladly. A very demanding boss. He gave a lot of himself and expected his subordinates and colleagues to do the same.

He was very intelligent, very well-read and had a wide and varied professional experience. He held strong opinions and did not yield position easily. But once he believed in someone or a cause, he would fight with everything he had.

Abba believed completely in the Nigerian project and believed completely in President Muhammadu Buhari. During the last five years he gave every second of his life for the success of both. His health suffered as a result but it was a sacrifice and investment he was happy to make. Nigerians will look back in years to come and see that he was truly the Best Man.

RIP my brother.

Kyari: Hated In Death, Buhari, Others Eulogise CoS

0

By Fola James

Abba Kyari was perhaps one of the most controversial aides of President Muhammadu Buhari that even in death some Nigerians have refused to let him rest in peace.

While some has described his demise a big loss to the country ditto the president, some angry Nigerians who considered him a usurper of power said his death was end of an inglorious era.

The same, however, cannot be said of his principal, Buhari who, in death described, his chief of staff as loyal and dedicated friend.

Speaking on behalf of the president, his Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu said Buhari wished that his chief of staff lived longer but because he has no control over his life he has left everything to God.

Buhari “These are not things that we have a choice in, it’s providence. It’s God who says who goes and who stays.

The President, obviously a deeply religious person, takes it that it cannot be helped. At the end of the day, all of us will also go that way.”

President Buhari who had known Kyari for over four decades said the late chief of staff knew his very ming on any issue .

According to Garba “He had a long working relationship with the President; more than 40 years of being together.

He had a full understanding of the President, he knew exactly where the President stood on every issue and therefore, he was there to fix it for the President and get them done as the President wanted.

He offered 100% loyalty to the President and all of these things that Abba Kyari brought focus to bear on long delayed infrastructure; whether they are road, railway, power and so on, all of them have the imprints of the President on them because this is where the President lived and believed and Abba Kyari was there to ensure that President Buhari, at the end of his two terms, leaves behind legacies that will last and for which he will be remembered and these are the things that Abba Kyari cared for.”

President Buhari said his late aide will be sorely missed because he “was like a pillar there in the Presidency; he was a rallying point of the entire workforce working the President.”

Meanwhile, some other notable Nigerians have described Kyari death as a big loss to the country.

In his condolence message to the federal government and his family, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo simply said “Dolapo and I express our sympathies to the President, Mrs Kulu Kyari, the children, and members of the family on the passing of the late Mallam Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to the President. May the Lord comfort and be with you all in Jesus name.”

The First Lady, Aisha Buhari who, in his lifetime had a very stormy relationship with the deceased said death is inevitable.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said he died in the service of his fatherland, adding that Nigerians should join hands to eliminate the dealy COVID 19 from the country.

“His death must be a solemn reminder to all of us that Covid-19 requires all hands on deck soberly, cooperatively, humanly, humanely, justly, equitably, fairly, consolidated and comprehensively to be able to fight it successfully and to get all Nigerians back to good health and healthy economy.

“God will give you and Abba Kyari’s family and friends the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.” Obasanjo said.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan described Kyari’s death as irreparable loss to his family and country.

“I condole with H.E @MBuhari, the Kyari family & all sympathisers on the demise of Mallam Abba Kyari who until his death was the Chief of Staff to the President of Nigeria. May Allah grant him Al Jannah Firdaus & strengthen his family & friends during this moment of grief,” the ex-president said.

On his part, Senate President Ahmed Lawan said Kyari was a dedicated public servant who served his country well.

He said “Mallam Kyari played his role well and will always be appreciated, more so now that the Almighty Allah has called time on his earthly sojourn,”

While Speaker of the House of Representatives,  Femi Gbajabiamila said his death should be a sober reflection for all Nigerians to remember all those who have died of the virus and pray for the departed souls.

The chief of staff to the president died on Friday after protracted struggle with the novel corona virus.

He was buried in Kudu National Cemetry in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Saturday according to Islamic rites.

Abba Kyari: How FG Ridiculed Nigeria; Nigerians Rise In Anger

0
Crowd at Abba Kyari burial

By Adesina Soyooye

In Nigeria, anger reigns.

The sympathy for the government and, especially, for President Mohammadu Buhari, on the announcement of the death of Mallam Abba Kyari, has given way to unadulterated anger.

Kyari had died in Lagos on Friday of Coronavirus.

He was President Buhari’s Chief of Staff.

But his funeral, in Abuja, on Saturday, has sparked outrage. All protocols, associated with COVID-19 were broken.

And the fear among the populace, especially, those in Abuja and environs is that the FG, by brazenly breaking its own law with impunity, has endangered the lives of Nigerians. They accuse the Government of lawlessness, and demand an apology.

They are saying that from the day Kyari returned from Germany, the FG looked the other way while the laws of the land, as it concerns COVID-19 were trampled upon.

When Kyari returned from Berlin, Germany, where he had gone, with a couple of other officials, to meet with German Company, SIEMENS on Power, the law was already in place that anybody who had just come back from burdened countries should self-quarantine. He never did. Instead, Nigerians point out, Kyari went on a meeting spree with Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and state Governors.

Mercifully, both Buhari and Osinbajo tested negative to the disease but, two Governors, Kaduna’s Nasir El- Rufai, and Oyo’s Seyi Makinde,  were infected. The late Chief of Staff did not stop at there.

He proceeded to Lokoja where  he led a Federal Government delegation  to condole with Governor Yahaya Bello, over the loss of his mother.

“He the importer of the Virus to the Villa and Abuja”, an angry Abuja resident,  who introduced himself as an Engineer, said on Saturday.

“What if he had infected Buhari and Osinbajo?, he added.

Yet, all that pales in the face of what followed thereafter.

Here they are.

*After days of hide and seek and denial by the Presidency on his status, Kyari, publicly revealed he tested positive for Coronavirus in a  statement which, at once, brimmed with inspiration, humility, loyalty to his boss, and submission to the will of Allah.

But he spoilt it, in connivance with the Federal Government, by leaving Abuja, and flying to Lagos.

At the time he did, the FG had closed Nigeria’s airspace to both international and local flights.

Kyari said he was going to Lagos for a private treatment.

Said Suleiman, a Lawyer: “It is difficult to agree that no hospital in Abuja could manage him. Yet, a simple explanation by FG as to why he left Abuja would have assuaged the feeling of preferential treatment. Why was he not isolated in Abuja?”

*At the time Kyari went to a private hospital, it was common knowledge that private hospitals were barred from treating patients of COVID-19. They are still barred, with a threat by the Government to close any hospital which flouts the order. Why was Kyari’s different?

Recall that the, otherwise, impressive and hardworking Lagos state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi,  had denied knowledge of the hospital Kyari was receiving treatment from. It was only on Saturday, after Kyari’s death, that he revealed it was the First Cardiology Consultants, and that it was accredited to handle COVID-19 cases.

In more civilized climes, Abayomi would have been on the slammer.

Yet, worse was to come.

On his death, the Federal Government broke more laws.

*Against the protocol of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC and that if the World Health Organization, WHO, his body was flown to Abuja.

* It was publicly received at the airport.

*The corpse was taken to Defence House, his official residence.

* From there, it was driven in a convoy to Gudu Military Cemetery where all the protocols were finally broken.

There was a crowd, including high profile government officials.

The crowd made nonsense of the social distancing order.

Most people, in the crowd,  did not not wear any Personal Protective Equipment, PPE.

In deed, one of them, wearing not even gloves, was seen openly helping those carrying the body.

After the burial, one of those who buried him, removed his PPE along the road, where he packed his car, stuffed it in a red polytene bag, dropped it carelessly on the road, and drove off.

Where were all the Security personnel?, Nigerians are asking.

And, where were the NCDC officials?

What did they teach this man who dumped his PPE on the road?

How does the Government expect Nigerians to obey the COVID-19 orders after what was witnessed on television channels at the burial?

Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, had said the corpses of COVID-19 victims will not be released to families. Why was Kyari’s different? Said an Abuja- based Journalist, “Kyari’s body was not only released, its burial was a big-do, televised, so Nigerians would know that all fingers are not equal. It is a big shame. Why then are Nigerians being harrassed o the roads everyday, and some even killed over a breach of the COVID-19 lockdown order?”

Many Nigerians are, strongly, of the opinion that the brazen breaking of the law during Kyari’s burial, would escalate the spread of the deadly Virus in Nigeria, and especially, Abuja.

They have, therefore, called for the tracking and quarantining, for 14 days, of all those who attended the funeral, except those who wore their PPE.

Asked an Actress:”Why were Funke Akindele and her husband prosecuted and convicted? That convinction should immediately be reversed. They are Saints compared to what we saw on television during Abba Kyari’s funeral. Government cannot break its own law, and expect others to obey it.You lead by example”

But Dr Mohammed Kawu, the Secretary, Health and Human Services Secretariat, FCTA,  offers a consolatory statement.

He said the FCTA will ensure that what happened at Kyari’s burial will never happen again. He also said that the man who dumped his PPE on the road has been quarantined. According to Dr Kawu, the Dugu cemetery has, also, been decontaminated, and all those who attended the burial, he assures, will be tracked and quarantined.

But Nigerians insist that the damage has been done already.  Most important, says Ugochinyere of the CUPP, Nigerians need an apology for this ridicule.

Update: How Abba Kyari Died; Hospital Shuts Down; He Stood No Chance

Abba Kyar

By Adesina Soyooye

Not a few people knew, when the story emerged that Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, had contracted the Coronavirus disease, that he stood no chance of survival.

Three things worked against him.

*He was 80 years and counting.

Only a handful of old people had miraculously survived the COVID-19 disease since it hit the world from Wuhan, China in December 2019.

*He had underlying health issues.

Even though the health issues were never made public, it was common knowledge that he was travelling out to London, unannounced, for treatment. When the disease hit him, there were undenied reports that his medical history had been asked of from a London hospital.

*He did not quarantine himself on return from Germany. He, instead, carried on government business as usual, and wasted ten precious days which, perhaps, might have been of essence to his treatment.

Indeed, on his return from Germany, in March, where he had gone to meet with Siemens officials to discuss Power issues, he not only attended high profile meetings, including with Buhari and almost all the state governors, he led a Federal Government delegation to Lokoja, Kogi state, to condole with Governor Yahaya Bello who had lost his mother.

It is strongly believed that, at least, two Governors – Nasir El-Rufai, Kaduna, and Seyi Makinde  of Oyo  State, contracted the disease through contacts with  Kyari.

While Makinde has recovered, El-Rufai is still positive, over two weeks after he was quarantined.

Bala Mohammed of Bauchi  state said he  contracted his after a handshake with former Vice President Atiku Abubarkar’s son, Mohammed, but the Atiku family put a lie to his claims , saying he deliberately hid the fact that he visited Germany. The Governor has since recovered. However, Atiku’s son is still in receiving treatment, in month after.

The miracle is that Buhari did not contract the disease from Kyari, a fact the Presidency celebrated when he tested negative. But unconfirmed reports said First Lady, Aisha Buhari, was in such a panic that she demanded for a decontamination of the Villa.

The Presidency had refused to confirm Kyari’s COVID-19 Status, until he confirmed it in a statement on March 29, the same day President Buhari made his first national broadcast on the disease.

While announcing his status, Kyari had said he was moving to Lagos where, he disclosed, he had made a private arrangement for his treatment. He also expressed optimism that he would return to his seat soon.

Until his death, the hospital where  he was treated was never made public.

On Friday, a high profile hospital, Premier Specialist Hospital was shut down by the management till further notice. It has branches in Victoria Island and Lekki.

Another hospital,  St Edward Hospital, Ajah, also closed down even though it has been decontaminated.

Two weeks ago, the rumour had made the rounds that Kyari had passed.  But it was vehemently denied by the Presidency, even though a source had told this magazine: It is a matter of time, he is not getting better. He is not going to make it”

Weighing in on the death rumour then, former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, described it as wicked. Kyari had worked in Femi-Kayode’s father’s Law firm.

When, therefore, Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media, announced Kyari’s passing in a terse statement, very early Saturday morning, it was like: No surprise.

Wrote Adesina in his Twitter handle in a statement dated April 18, and entitled:

CHIEF OF STAFF TO PRESIDENT, ABBA KYARI, PASSES ON,

“The Presidency regrets to announce the passage of the Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari.

The deceased had tested positive to the ravaging COVID-19, and had been receiving treatment. But he died on Friday, April 17, 2020.

May God accept his soul.

Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.”

Kyari was, by any stretch of imagination,  the most powerful and the most influential official in the Presidency. He was also the closest aide to Buhari. He was so powerful that he always invited Service Chiefs to meet with him, a situation that forced the National Security Adviser to the President, Major General Babagana Monguno,   to write a much publicised letter, decrying it, and warning Service Chiefs to stop forthwith.

The President had also asked his Ministers to make any requests of him through Kyari.

A native of Borno State, of Kanuri stock, Kyari, a Lawyer, leaves behind four children.

He was married to Ibrahim Tahir’s younger sister. Tahir was a Minister under President Shehu Shagari’s administration

Abba Kyari

By Uche Mbah
Buhari’s chief of staff, Abba Kyari, is dead. He died of COVID 19 infection. It is not clear where he died as his movement since he became sick was shrouded in secrecy.
In a statement by Femi Adesina, Buhari’s media aid, on his verified Twitter account, information was scanty.
“Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari, passes on. May God rest his soul. Amen. Funeral arrangements to be announced soon,” he twitted.
Abba Kyari is a Muslim, and his burial is expected to be immediate according to Islamic rights. Why it will be “announced soon” remains a puzzle.
Rumors of his death were rife two weeks ago when the daughter of a former southwest governor twitted a veiled reference to his death two weeks ago.
This is a developing story…
