President Muhammadu Buhari  has approved the sack of the Managing Director, Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading PLC (NBET) Dr. Marilyn Amobi.

Reason for the sack is related to alleged fraud perpetrated by Amobi.

In January, Buhari had overruled the Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, by reversing the suspension of Amobi, who, at the time, was accused of several official misdemeanor.

The agency was also moved from the Ministry of Power, where it hitherto resided, and taken to the Ministry of Finance.

Furthermore, Amobi has had a running battle with some members of the National Assembly who insisted on probing her, with the latest allegation being that as MD of NBET she was allegedly still running a private firm outside the country in breach of Nigerian laws.

The erstwhile NBET boss, however, denied all the allegations levelled against her at various times.

Announcing the decision to terminate Amobi’s appointment, the Minister of Power, Mamman Sale, through his Special Adviser, Media and Communications, Aaron Artimas, stated that she will be replaced by Dr. Nnaemeka Eweluka, the company’s General Counsel and Secretary.

“In furtherance of the reorganisation/ realignments in the power sector, the honourable Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, announces the appointment of a new Managing Director for the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading, PLC.

“He is Dr. Nnaemeka Eweluka, the company’s General Counsel and Secretary.

“He is to succeed Dr. Marilyn Amobi, as substantive Managing Director/CEO, while the former MD is to hand over and proceed on terminal leave with immediate effect.

“President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier approved the recommendation to this effect,” the statement said.

It added that Eweluka, a lawyer, comes to the position with over 20 years experience, spanning private practice, academics and the power sector.

“He is a specialist on privatisation and legal energy reforms, as well as a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration,” it stated.

Gov. Akeredolu Gives Reasons Why He Borrows Money To Develop Ondo State

0

By Akinwale Kasali

For three and half years that Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has been in the saddle as Governor of Ondo State, the State has been in debt, borrowing money to bring about Developmental strides.

Defending his actions on borrowing, Akeredolu, on Tuesday, said his bent on advancing the need for massive infrastructural development of the state was the main reason  his administration borrowed money in the last three and the half years.

Akeredolu who is angling for a second term bid under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) stated this while briefing newsmen after submitting his expression of interest and nomination forms at the party national Secretariat in Abuja. The forms were purchased for him by state lawmakers and all political appointees in the state

The governor, who dismissed critics of his administration’s debt profile, said he met a huge debt in 2016 and had to offset and embarked on infrastructural development, hence the borrowing. He argued that there was no harm in borrowing stressing that no state or Nation can exist without borrowing.

“I can assure you there is probably no State that can exist without borrowing. Not even a nation, not even America. We have tried to spend within our limit because of the debt we met. We met a lot of debts, we have to pay back. After we have paid the debt met,  we initiated a move to have a bond of N30 billion.

“At the end of the day, the Debt Management Office ( DMO) said with our debt profile we are not entitled to more than N15 billion, so we have gotten N15 billion but all of that have gone on infrastructure development”.

Shedding more light on the dispensation of the bond, Akeredolu said, “we have done a lot of work before the loan came. So the loan had to be used pay a number of our contractors because we have adopted a way of doing our business which is different from any other person. We made it a policy, any contractor that wants to work for us, start the work. You must attain up to 30 per cent with your own money before we start paying you and that allows for quality jobs”.

He cited the massive development of Akure, the state capital, the Redemption bridge at Ore and many other infrastructural development projects across the 18 local government areas of the state.

Akeredolu who was accompanied by the Minister of State, Niger Delta, Senator Donald Alasoadura, the Speaker, deputy speaker and 21 members of the State House of Assembly, members of the state executive council, party chieftains from all the council’s, youth and women group assured the people of the state of his determination to build on the solid foundation he had laid.

He thanked the members of the National Working Committee of the APC, the State Executive Committee of the party, party leaders from all the 18 local government areas of the State, Speaker, members of the State House of Assembly, members of the State Executive Council, other elected and appointed political office holders, for the support given him.

Akeredolu said his aspiration for a second term in office is by popular demand of his teeming supporters. He pointed out that the support he is enjoying was a product of the strong faith his people have in his capability to lead the State once again.

“It is a great privilege to be called upon to serve. Public service poses its own challenges but the knowledge of an omnibus acceptance emboldens the public servant to proceed without fear.

Expressing optimism for the revalidation of the mandate given him in 2016, he said “we must, however, not fail to, without any fear of contradiction, that we have kept faith with our people. We have been relentless in the pursuit of the set objectives in all the sectors bear indelible imprints on the socio – economic landscape in the State.

“We have taken our message of redemption to all the nooks and crannies of the State. Every part of our land is treated as our cherished heritage I must be preserved. Our people are treated with respect. Our administration has rekindled hope in the possibility of altruistic service.

“We have promoted amity among the workers.

Prior attention is extended to matters concerning their welfare. We shall continue to encourage diligence, honesty and ingenuity. No public servant needs to be afraid of persecution under our watch.

“We have participated in politics bearing in mind the overriding interest of the people. We have never, at any moment, allowed parochial considerations becloud our vision for optimum service delivery. We have invested massively in infrastructure to bridge the embarrassing deficit.

Nigeria In Very Grave Danger

Nothing has shocked me in my entire life in public service as the revelation from Nigeria’s First Quarter 2020 financial reports in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, which shows, alarmingly, that whereas Nigeria spent a total sum of ₦943.12 billion in debt servicing, the Federal Government’s retained revenue for the same period was only ₦950.56 billion. This means that Nigeria’s debt to revenue ratio is now 99%.

No one should be deceived. This is a crisis! Debt servicing does not equate to debt repayment. The reality is that Nigeria is paying only the minimum payment to cover our interest charges. The principal remains untouched and is possibly growing.

We are at a precipice. If our revenue figures do not go up, and go up quickly, Nigeria risks a situation where our revenue cannot even sustain our debt servicing obligations. Meaning that we may become insolvent, and our creditors may foreclose on us, as has occurred in Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

In my opinion editorial of December 17 2019, titled ‘Endless Borrowing Will Lead Nigeria to Endless Sorrowing’, I had cause to counsel the Federal Government to desist from indiscriminate lending, and offered suggestions on ways to both increase revenue and reduce expenditure. However, my counsel fell on deaf ears. And now we have come to this.

Again, on May 15, 2020, I counselled that the Federal Government ought to reduce Nigeria’s budget by at least 25%, to reflect the economic realities of the times that we live in. Again, my entreaties were brushed aside.

As part of an administration that paid off Nigeria’s entire foreign debt, I am concerned by the alarming and avoidable unprecedented increase in our debt to GDP ratio and debt to revenue ratio. The alarm I sounded last year is now sounding louder.

Not only have we squandered our opportunities, we have also squandered the opportunities of our future generations by bequeathing them a debt that they neither incurred nor enjoyed.

As a matter of utmost urgency and importance, I call on the Federal Government to take immediate steps to drastically reduce its expenditure, especially on wasteful projects, such as maintenance of the Presidential Air Fleet, and unnecessary renovations of buildings that could serve as is, limousine fleet for top government officials, overseas travels and treatments, and the ₦4.6billion Presidential villa maintenance budget, etc.

We cannot be on the verge of economic ruin, while still maintaining a Presidential Air Fleet that has more planes than the Presidential fleets of those from whom we take these loans. Nigeria must sell those planes and channel the revenue to other vital areas of need while taking additional steps to reduce the cost of running our government.

The Federal Government cannot continue to justify these unsustainable numbers by pointing at Nigeria’s debt to GDP ratio. That is only half the picture. Our debt to revenue ratio paints a much more realistic portrait of our financial situation, especially as our revenues are majorly tied to a mono-product, oil and gas, which are very vulnerable to global shocks.

Again, I warn that Nigeria is facing a crisis, and we cannot continue to keep up appearances by taking out more loans to prop up our economy. That will amount not just to robbing Peter to pay Paul, but to robbing our children to pay for our greed!

COVID 19: UK Warns Banks To Prepare For Loan Defaults

0

By Tosin Olatokunbo

The British government has warned banks in the country to prepare for shocks likely to result from loan defaulters.

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson government said businesses and individuals may be unable to repay money they borrowed to cope with the coronavirus pandemic, the national financial sector regulator said on Tuesday.

Banks in the UK have been criticised for being slow in responding to loan requests from business owners trying to keep afloat after the COVID 19 devastation.

But UK Finance Chief Executive, Stephen Jones said companies should consider their ability to repay before asking for a loan.

Reuters quoting UK Finance, a banking industry body, reported that over 900,000 businesses have taken out state-backed loans worth around 38 billion pounds under schemes introduced to help companies deal with the impact of lockdowns.

Charles Randell, Chairman of the Financial Conduct Authority, FCA said the government will need to intervene because some of the debt incurred would turn out to be unaffordable and this would need to be tackled fast to avoid hurting a recovery.

According to him “Lenders will need to scale their arrears-handling functions quickly, and invest in training and controls.

Randell told an online meeting with the chairs of Britain’s banks that “There needs to be an appropriate dispute resolution system, and we are working with the Financial Ombudsman Service and the Business Banking Resolution Service to ensure that there is capacity to deal with the volumes we may see.”

He said “We can’t allow this to become a replay of the 2008 crisis where the treatment of some small business borrowers did such serious damage to people and to trust in financial services.”

Randell said the pandemic’s impact on markets has raised posers on how banks doll out high-risk loans to business owners.

Covid-19: Barclays English Premier League Resumes, As Matches To Be Played Behind Closed Doors

Barclays English Premier League

By Akinwale Kasali

The much anticipated Barclays English Premier League is set to resume after a-three month halt due to the  Coronavirus outbreak.

Undoubtedly, the most watched and richest league in the world is set to resume on Wednesday, 17th June, 2020, with Arsenal Football Club and Manchester City Football Club and Sheffield United with Aston Villa kicking off the  resumption with a rescheduled fixture, before Cascades of matches takes place.

It is exactly100 days in the deep freeze, with Liverpool on the brink of winning the title in a radically changed football universe.

The English top flight follows Germany’s Bundesliga and La Liga in Spain in rebooting their seasons after the coronavirus lockdown, aiming to cram 92 games into six weeks of breathless action.

Despite vocal complaints from some clubs and stars including Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, “Project Restart” has largely gone smoothly, with regular testing of players and staff yielding few positives.

The watching world will be confronted with a jarring spectacle, with an eerie silence in the usually noisy stands.

Piping crowd chants into stadiums, cardboard cut-outs of supporters and live video fan walls will add colour but it will be impossible to mimic the usual vibrant atmosphere.

In total, about 300 people will be allowed in stadiums for each match, with strict health protocols in place.

There will be widespread disinfection of changing facilities, dugouts, matchballs, goalposts, corner flags and substitution boards.

People other than players and coaching staff on team benches must wear face coverings.

The games themselves will look different.

Players have been told to maintain social-distancing during goal celebrations and encouraged not to spit.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admits players will have to find motivation without the urgency provided by fans.

“The game is different,” he said in his pre-match press conference on Monday.

“The intensity drops a little bit. That urgency from the crowd doesn’t exist any more, how passionate the crowds are in England. We have to adapt.

“We have to experience it. We have to find ways to motivate our players as well in moments.”

But Aston Villa manager Dean Smith said his players were desperate to return, talking about the honour of playing the first game.

“The eyes of the world will be on us and we are looking forward to it,” he said.

“The players have been itching to get back.”

The hectic fixture list, warm summer temperatures and a lack of preparation time could lead to more injuries. The world governing body, FIFA, has given the green light for five substitutions per match.

Edo Guber: Confusion In APC, Obaseki’s Camp After Oshiomhole’s Sack

By Fola James

Can a man in coma perform the functions of the national chairman of a political party?

That is the big poser for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC which few hours ago named Abiola Ajimobi, a former governor of Oyo state as its acting National Chairman following the sack of Adams Oshiomhole by the court of appeal.

Thus few immediately after the ruling, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state, who has been embattled with the APC strongman, has made a u-turn from joining the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The court, yesterday affirmed the decision of the lower court which had earlier stripped the controversial former Edo state governor of his coveted position.

The APC National Working Committee, NWC, had immediately after the judgment appointed the former Oyo helmsman, currently undergoing treatment in a Lagos hospital, after contracting the corona virus, to replace Oshiomhole.

In a statements signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu in Abuja, the party said it was shocked by the development and that the decision to appoint Ajimobi in acting capacity is in line with the APC constitution.

The Party, the statement said is shocked with “the news indicating the Appeal Court has upheld the suspension of the Party’s National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole by an FCT High Court pending the determination of the substantive suit.

Guided by advice from the Party’s legal department in line with the provisions of Section 14.2. (iii) of the Party’s constitution, the Deputy National Chairman (South), Sen. Abiola Ajimobi, will serve as the Party’s Acting National Chairman.

According to Section 14.2. (iii),of the APC constitution, the Deputy National Chairman, North/South “Shall act as the National Chairman in the absence of the National Chairman from his zone”.

Meanwhile, Governor Obaseki  said he has not joined any political party.

Obaseki was disqualification by the Screening committee set up by APC to screen its governorship aspirants last week.

Following his disqualification, the governor picked up a membership card of the PDP fuelling suggestion that he was planning to run under the party.

He also met with some leaders of the party, including governors of two oil rich states.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United State of America and the United States Department of State have sanctioned six Nigerians for engaging in cyber acts targeting United States businesses and individuals.

A statement by the United States Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo, stated that the six cyber actors –Benson Nnamdi Orson, 33; Kayode Abiola Ayorinde, 33; Ogunshakin Alex Afolabi, 37; Okpoh Felix Osilama, 31; Olorunyomi Michael, 37; and Uzuh Richard Izuchukwu, 34, were busted before they could scam their targets.

“Technological advancements that provide greater interconnectivity also offer greater opportunity for exploitation by malicious actors who target at-risk Americans,” said Pompeo.

He added; “Today, in coordination with the U.S. Department of Justice, the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control took action against six Nigerian nationals, pursuant to Executive Order 13694 as amended, for conducting an elaborate online scheme to steal more than $6 million from victims across the United States.

“The six individuals designated today manipulated their victims to gain access to their sensitive information and financial resources.  The U.S. will not tolerate such gross misuse of technology.

“The United States will use all of the tools at our disposal to defend the American people and businesses from malign actors that seek to target them, including cyber-enabled actors who prey on vulnerable Americans and businesses.

Meanwhile, the six Nigerians have been added to the Specially Designated Nationals List by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S Department of Treasury as cyber-related designation individual.

OFAC closely coordinated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which, Tuesday, released details regarding its indictment against members of the conspiracy.

The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) receives romance fraud victim reports from all ages, education, and income brackets.

However, the elderly women, and those who have lost a spouse are often targeted.

Tuesday’s action includes the designation of the six Nigerians pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13694, as amended by E.O. 13757, which targets malicious cyber-enabled activities, including those related to the significant misappropriation of funds or economic resources for private financial gain.

As a result of the action, all property and interests in property of the designated persons that are in the possession or control of U.S. persons or within or transiting the United States are blocked, and U.S. persons generally are prohibited from dealing with them.

Uzuh was designated pursuant to E.O. 13694, as amended, for having engaged in cyber-enabled activities that have the purpose or effect of causing a significant misappropriation of funds or economic resources for private financial gain.

From, at least, early 2015 to September 2016, Uzuh and an accomplice sent emails to victims appearing as though they were coming from a company’s true business executive, and would request and receive wire transfers of funds from the businesses’ accounts.

Uzuh would often target over 100 businesses in a single day. A loss in excess of $6,300,000 can be attributed to the BEC scheme led by Uzuh and an accomplice.

Olorunyomi was designated pursuant to E.O. 13694, as amended, for having engaged in cyber-enabled activities that have the purpose or effect of causing a significant misappropriation of funds or economic resources for private financial gain.

From September 2015 to June 2017, Olorunyomi and an accomplice led a scheme that victimized Americans through the use of romance fraud.

Olorunyomi and his co-conspirators created fictitious profiles on dating websites and posed as individuals looking for love. He developed online relationships with victims to either obtain funds directly from victims, or used their bank accounts to funnel fraudulently obtained money. Losses exceeding $1,000,000 can be attributed to the romance fraud scheme led by Olorunyomi and his accomplice.

Ogunshakin was designated pursuant to E.O. 13694, as amended, for having provided financial, material, or technological support for Uzuh.

Ogunshakin conducted BEC and romance scams.

Ogunshakin provided Uzuh and other co-conspirators with bank accounts that were used to receive fraudulent wire transfers.

Additionally, Ogunshakin assisted Uzuh with contacting victim companies and he conducted his own BEC schemes.

Okpoh was designated pursuant to E.O. 13694, as amended, for having provided financial, material, or technological support to Uzuh.

Okpoh conducted romance scams and engaged in money laundering, working closely with Uzuh and others involved in the scheme.

Okpoh provided hundreds of U.S. bank accounts that were used to receive fraudulent wire transfers from victims of BEC and romance fraud.

Benson was designated pursuant to E.O. 13694, as amended, for having provided financial, material, or technological support to Uzuh.

Benson conducted romance scams and money laundering, working closely with Uzuh.

Benson communicated with multiple romance fraud victims to obtain their bank account details, and provided the account information to Uzuh to receive fraudulent wire transfers from U.S. businesses.

Kayode was designated pursuant to E.O. 13694, as amended, for having provided financial, material, or technological support to Uzuh.

Kayode conducted BEC and romance scams, working closely with Uzuh and others involved in the scheme.

Kayode provided U.S. bank accounts to individuals involved in the scheme, one of which was then used to receive a $69,150 fraudulent wire transfer.

Arewa : Silence In The Face Of Evil Is Itself Evil

0

By Prof. Usman Yusuf_

Today, I write about the worsening and never ending insecurity and blood letting in Northern Nigeria (Arewa) and the deafening silence of many of us who should speak up loud and clearly on behalf of our voiceless people.

In Islam, it is the duty of every Muslim not only to defend what is right but to oppose that which is wrong. The Prophet said, “If someone among you sees wrong he must right it by his hand if he can (action). If he cannot, then by his tongue (speak up); if he cannot, then by his gaze (silent expression of disapproval); and if he cannot, then in his heart. The last is the minimum expression of his conviction (faith, courage)”.

Nigerian elites amaze me when I see them so fixated on the recent riots in the United States following the death of the African American man George Floyd. For me, the simple message I see in these riots is that America, the most powerful nation on earth, went up in flames because a human life was lost. Also, that the protesters, mostly young Americans of all races were expressing their outrage at this injustice. The beauty of any democracy as imperfect as America’s, is that it allows people to vent their displeasure with their leadership even in messy ways like this.

Back to our country Nigeria and Arewa in particular where mass burials of our people massacred by bandits and insurgents is a common occurrence and where the land is soaked wet with the blood of innocent, unarmed, undefended folks living largely in  rural areas that have never had any government presence. _Yet, we the elites have become so immunized to this carnage and injustice in our midst that all we do is share the video clips on WhatsApp then recoil back into our shell of fear, docility and nonchalance instead of raising our voices.

We need no reminding that all of us owe these our simple folks and the places we come from, a debt of gratitude we can never repay. Today, we are who we are because of them and the foresight, vision and selflessness of the leaders of the time who invested in us and nurtured us into the productive citizens that we became. The least we can do is to raise our voices against these injustices to them.

President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari came into power thanks to the loyal support, trust and goodwill of the masses particularly in Arewa. They gave their money, blood, sweat, tears and for some, their lives to elect him in 2015 and re-elect him in 2019. When he laid sick in hospital in the U.K., millions kept vigil praying for his recovery. The masses simply trusted his integrity and saw in him a leader that would correct the wrongs and set this nation on a path to progress.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) under his leadership, campaigned on the tripod of fighting corruption, insecurity and fixing the economy. Five years hence, corruption is flourishing more than ever before, the economy is in a free fall with the nation drowning in debt with nothing tangible to show for it. People are much less secure today than they were five years ago.

Arewa has for too long made excuses for and given a lot of latitude to this President in spite of all that has been going wrong in their personal lives and the nation partly because they were hoping things would change in his second term. Whereas it was considered almost blasphemous in Arewa to speak up against this government during its first term, the tide is changing very fast all across the region but more acutely in the President’s home state of Katsina where incessant mass killings with impunity by bandits are a daily occurrence. Katsina, the capital city is fast becoming a mega IDP camp sheltering refugees displaced from the 9 LGAs terrorized by these armed bandits.

Arewa today is under siege and terrorized by rampaging bandits and insurgents. They roll into our towns and villages in convoys of motorcycles riding three on each, brandishing AK47 rifles with impunity. They spend hours killing, burning, raping, carting away livestock and abducting women as sex slaves. In many of these villages, they put taxes on the people and keep coming back again and again to attack because there is no law enforcement presence to protect them. The Police or Military always show up after the carnage to count the bodies.

How these bunch of ragtag bandits on motorcycles wielding nothing more than rusty AK47 rifles can roam the land with impunity causing these much deaths and destructions in a nation with a standing Army and Air force should be a reason for serious national reflection on our entire security apparatus. The nation must ask the tough questions of weather the current Military leadership has run out of ideas to get the job done. Nigerians are sick and tired of this blood letting and mayhem and want it stopped now, nothing more nothing less.

I recently watched two video clips that brought tears to my eyes, these videos are a testament to our failings as a society to our own people but, most importantly, of the failure of this government to protect the lives, honour and dignity of those we hold dear and sacred; our women folks and families. Forgive me for being clinical in describing these women’s ordeal but it is the reality of the lives of our women under this siege.

The first video is of a young nursing mother from a village in Katsina narrating how she was raped by armed bandits in front of her husband and teenage son. You could see the silent rage on the face of the teenage son who was standing nearby. Her husband was too distraught and ashamed to be shown.

The second video was of a woman from a village in Borno crying and pleading with the visiting Governor to protect them from Boko Haram. She told him that the insurgents would come to their village several days in a week raping women. You could see the fear and anguish on her face.

From Adamawa to Zamfara, the death toll all across Arewa is mounting. Images of the massacres are too gruesome to watch and the stories from survivors too heartbreaking to hear but, hearing and watching we must, because this is the reality under which our people have been living silently for years. The roll call of the nameless dead are too numerous to count, neither the Federal nor State governments keep any records of the number of people killed, injured, kidnapped, women raped or cattle rustled.

People in the region feel that all they have to show for voting in President Muhammadu Buhari in massive numbers are increasing poverty, death and destruction to their lives and livelihoods and the painful emotional trauma of rape of girls and woman in rural communities. They feel abandoned and unappreciated with no meaningful Federal Government presence in their States and are left at the mercy of these murderous bandits.

The President seems distant, uncaring and out of touch with the sufferings of his largest support base. It has never been in his nature to commiserate or empathize with people in real time in their hours of need. He does not send delegation to condole with the people, or leaders of the communities affected.

Contrast that with the Vice President’s response to the killing in July 2019 of Funke Olakunrin, the 58 year old daughter of Reuben Fasoranti the leader of the Yoruba group, Afenifere. The Vice President flew to Akure, Ondo State to condole the family. He also flew to Zaria, Kaduna State to condole the family of Precious Owolabi, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member hit by a stray bullet in Abuja during a Shiites protest on July 22, 2019.

Governors in Arewa have essentially become Governors of condolences in their States. They all appear helpless with many literally blackmailed into negotiating with these murderous bandits. There is a picture on social media that made me cringe. Though it was touted as a disarmament process with the bandits terrorizing the State, the picture clearly tells who was in charge. It showed the State Governor, a Senior Military Officer and a bandit brandishing his AK47 in the middle. For goodness sake, you do not negotiate with unrepentant rapists, mass murderers, kidnappers, arsonists and cattle rustlers, instead, you bring them to swift justice.

The threat of famine in Nigeria is real and almost certain if the federal government does not take urgent and serious security measures that will protect our people to go back to their farms. In all the States terrorized by these bandits, they choose the most fertile parts of the State to terrorize farmers off their farms. Food insecurity in addition to current insecurity to lives and properties will be a disaster and a serious threat to our National Security and existence as a Nation.

  AREWA’S MESSAGE TO MR. PRESIDENT:
(a). We are under siege by armed terrorists
(b). Our land is drenched in blood
(c). There are mass burials all over the region
(d). Our women are being raped by bandits
(e). Our people are held captive in forests all across the region
(f). Our Traditional rulers are being killed
(g). Our livestock have been rustled
(h). We have been made poorer by terrorists
(I). Our farmers are not safe to till the land
(j). Our people are displaced to IDP camps
(l). There is growing anger in the land
(m). Now is the time for urgent action.

Arewa’s collective silence to these injustices is a bigger tragedy than the terror and cruelty that these murderers visit daily on our people. In the name of God who created us all, I call on all men and women of conscience to speak up loud and clearly against these injustices and our government’s inability to stop the bloodshed. Let us not forget that we will surely be asked to account for what we did when our people were being kidnapped, killed, maimed, raped, abducted, their houses razed down and displaced from their ancestral homes”.

Covid-19; Imo Assembly Shut, Mother of Twins Dies after Delivery At FMC, Owerri

0

By Adesina Soyooye

The Imo State House of Assembly has been shut down for the next 14 days.

The Chairman of the Imo State Taskforce Committee on Covid-19, Prof. Maurice Iwu, said the  IMHA was shut  down  in order to  fumigate the premises.

This was disclosed in.a Press Release by the Chief Press Secretary/ Media Adviser to the Governor, Oguwuike Nwachuku, which was, surprisingly, later withdrawn.

But this magazine gathered that a high ranking member of the  House, (name withheld), and members of his family tested positive for  COVID- 19. We also confirmed that the House have been shut down.

Stories have been rife that a couple of members of the Assembly have contracted COVOD-19. Even though the House denied the story, the closure confirms it, as did Iwu.

The House Members, Management and Staff have been ordered to go  into self isolation for 14 days.

According to the  Taskforce, “a member of the House  of Assembly tested positive to Covid-19 which constitutes a very serious danger to other members, management and staff of the Assembly Complex.”

Briefing newsmen on Tuesday on the Covid-19 pandemic as it concerns Imo Sate, Prof. Iwu said the scare at the Assembly was real and that there was need to take proactive measures to protect the people using the complex as office.

He further said that the Committee had embarked on enhanced screening of Imolites on Covid-19 and that, so far, the State has tested 760 people with 135 testing positive out of which 92 are active cases.

Prof. Iwu said that 43 have been discharged while one death has been recorded.

According to him, the dead was case a lady who was delivered of a set of twins and was in the custody of the Taskforce before delivery.

The Chairman further explained that currently, Imo State is having four positive cases in the isolation centre at Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, another four at Woddi Centre also in Owerri, while others are at different isolation centres across the state.

He emphasized that the Committee has worked out a strategic plan to ensure that health of our people is guaranteed by ensuring that they do not compromise social harmony.

“Hence, social harmony is important in the strategic plan to fight the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

Prof. Iwu reiterated the earlier warning on the three categories of people that are more vulnerable to the virus to include elderly people of 65 years and above, people with underlining ailments and medical professions who come in daily contact with the carriers.

He appealed to all and sundry to join hands with the State Government, the Taskforce Committee and the World Health Organization, WHO to observe all laid down protocols (rules and regulations) such as regular hand washing, use of alcohol-based sanitiser, maintaining social distancing, putting on face mask and reporting any emergency illness that has to do with coughing, sneezing and difficulty in breathing to the nearest medical authorities.
