Update: Why Man Killed Wife In A Very Horrendous Manner, And Drank Sniper

0
Femi and his wife

By Akinwale Kasali

Looking at husband and wife as they jogged happily together on Saturday, nobody had an inkling of the evil plot boiling inside the man. Not the neighbours. Not the wife. Not the wife’s younger sister who lives with them. Not their two kids they left behind.

They made such a lovely couple. Good looking. They also appeared happy, and seemed to have everything going for them. They had moved into a good environment – the airy Lekki area of Lagos.

But on Sunday, June 21, everything changed. It was a day of horror.

The man killed his wife in a most horrendous manner. He put on their music set and raised the volume to high heavens so nobody would hear any noise. Then he tied the two legs of his beautiful wife together. Then, the hands. He cellotaped her mouth. He then brought out two  knives which he had obviously hidden earlier, in their bedroom. He started by shaving her hair.

Then, he went to the actual work, butchering his wife.

When he was done, he took the easy and cowardly way out.

He drank Sniper, a poisonous pesticide, commonly used to kill rats, and died.

Ironically, it was the loud music which exposed the horror. Finding the mouse unbearable, neighbours went to the house to ask that the volume of the music be toned down.

They met the wife’s younger sister, and the couple’s two kids downstairs. After their complaint, she went up to tell them about the complainants from neighbours. It was the horror that confronted her.  Two dead bodies. One bloodied. The other, foaming, and stretched out, on his own.

The problem that led to the tragedy:  had issues over the paternity of one of their children.

According to neighbours, residents not much was known of the couple, as they had just moved into   their home in Victory Park estate.

Neighbours revealed that on Sunday afternoon,  the couple’s apartment was filled with  loud music emanating from their home and this lasted for many hours.

The neighbors went to the estate security office to complain about the loud music and insisted the estate security officials go there and caution the couple.

The estate security authorities went to the couple’s compound to appeal to them to turn down the volume of the music coming from their apartment.

They, however, met with the wife’s sister who was downstairs with the couple’s children.

The sister immediately went upstairs to inform her sister and the husband about the complaint laid by the estate authorities.

She was said to have knocked several times but got no response.

After waiting for so long, she and the estate security officials decided to pull the door down. They were greeted by the horrific sight of blood gushing out of the wife where she was stabbed, and the Sniper bottle beside the husband sleeping lifelessly.

Apparently, the man had killed his wife. It is believed it was pre-meditated because when they got into the room, they saw different kinds of knives there. The woman’s legs and hands were bound and her mouth shut with a cellotape. The husband used a clipper to shave her hair, stabbed her head, her eyes, stabbed her multiple times with different knives in different parts of her body.

The scene was nothing short of a horror movie.

Lagos State Police Command Spokesperson, Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident said, “It is true. Homicide detectives have sealed up the place.

They have commenced investigation. The bodies of the man and the woman have been moved to the hospital for  autopsy.”

WTO: Okonjo-Iweala Divides Africa

Okonjo Iweala’s chances to become the director general of the World Trade Organisation, WTO has been boosted following her endorsement by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.

The former Finance Minister is in a fierce contest with Egypt’s nominee, Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh, and one of them is expected to emerge Africa’s candidate for the election.

In a statement on Monday ECOWAS leaders said they “acknowledged the strong academic and professional background of Dr Okonjo-Iweala and her very large experience in national affairs as Nigeria’s Finance Minister (2003-2006 and 2011-2015) and Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister briefly in 2006,” and therefore, supported her to land the WTO top job.

The endorsement, analysts say, has now dampened initial suggestion that the former Nigeria’s Minister of Finance will drop out of the race, after she was disqualified by the African Union has now fizzle out.

Few days ago, AU said it will not support the former minister decribing her nomination as faulty.

The Union says the nomination of Okonjo-Iweala violates Rule (11), 1, 2 and 3, Rule 12 and Rule 15(3) of the rules of procedure of the committee on candidatures within the International System of the AU as well as Council’s Decisions Ex CI 1072 (XXXV), Ec CI Dec 1090 (XXXVI) and Assembly Dec 795 (XXXIII).

The ex-minister is Nigeria’s candidate for the position, after President Muhammadu Buhari withdrew the nomination of Fedrick Agah.

The magazine was informed that the federal government reached out to ECOWAS leaders to support Okonjo-Iweala as the block’s consensus candidate for the position.

The ECOWAS heads of state, in the statement signed by President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger said the former Coordinating Minister of the Economy under the Goodluck Jonathan administration possess a robust, untainted public service record to qualify her for WTO director General.

Their endorsement, the leaders stated, is due to her academic background and over 30 years of experience as a Development Economist.

ECOWAS has urged African and non-African States to support the former minister to land the job.

Apart from Okonjo-iweala, other nominees for the post so far, include Jesús Seade Kuri of Mexico and Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh of Egypt

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, a world-renowned economist and international development expert, currently sits on the boards of Standard Chartered Bank, Twitter, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, and the African Risk Capacity.

President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has recently appointed her a member of his Economic Team.

Forget his suspension as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is dancing. In suspension, he is victorious.

His hand-picked candidate for the APC in the September 22 Governorship election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has won the APC Primaries held in the State on Monday, June 22.

Announcing the Pastor winner, in a landslides victory, Chairman of the Edo Primary Committee, Governor Hope Uzodinma,of Imo State, said Ize-Iyamu scored a total number of 27, 838 votes to defeat former Deputy Governor under Oshiomhole, Dr Pius Odubu (3, 766), and Osaro Obazee (2,751).

To install Ize-Iyamu, it is strongly believed, was one of the reasons Governor Godwin Obaseki was disqualified during screening.

If Obaseki gets the PDP ticket as expected, the two men will square up. If they do, it will be their second meeting.

Their first was in 2016 when Obaseki flew the APC flag, and Ize-Iyamu, the PDP flag. Now, the reverse is the case. Then, Oshiomhole had campaigned against Ize-Iyamu calling him an armed robber. Today, he is campaigning for him against Obaseki.

In 2016, Obaseki defeated Ize-Iyamu.

Rights Group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has dragged the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, and Director General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, to court over their failure to account for public funds and other resources so far spent and used to combat the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

The suit followed SERAP’s Freedom of Information (FoI) requests dated March 27, 2020 to the Minister of Health and the NCDC, expressing concerns that lack of transparency in the use of the funds and resources to combat COVID-19 would lead to diversion or mismanagement of funds and resources, unnecessarily Lord of lives, and serious damage to public health in the country.

In the suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/616/2020 filed last week at the Federal High Court, Abuja, SERAP is seeking: “an order for leave to apply for judicial review and an order of mandamus to direct and compel the Minister of Health and the NCDC to publish details of the funds and resources from federal and state governments, and the private sector, as well as details of how the funds and resources have so far been spent and used to combat COVID-19″

SERAP is also seeking: “an order of mandamus to direct and compel the Federal Government to disclose information on the exact number of tests that have been carried out for high-ranking public officials and politicians, the number of any such high-ranking public officials and politicians now in self-isolation or quarantine, as well as the exact number of tests that have been carried out for the country’s poorest and most vulnerable people.

The organisation is seeking six reliefs form the court.

It asked the court to direct the defendants to provide “details of exact funds and other resources allocated by the Nigerian authorities and private sector donations to the Respondents to improve Nigeria’s health facilities to combat the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria; details of spending and planned spending of any such funds, other resources and donations to combat the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria; details of efforts made by the Second Respondent to make NCDC’s website functional and accessible and to publish weekly spending on initiatives by the NCDC, including on NCDC’s website.”

The relief sought also include: “details of processes and procedures put in place to ensure that the funds, other resources and donations allocated to combat COVID-19 are not diverted, mismanaged or stolen; details of measures to protect health workers and to encourage the country’s poorest and most vulnerable people to come forward for testing and to escalate testing for this group and the exact number of tests that have been carried out for high-ranking public officials and politicians, the number of any such high-ranking public officials and politicians now in self-isolation or quarantine, as well as the exact number of tests that have been carried out for the country’s poorest and most vulnerable people.”

SERAP argues that transparency in the use of COVID-19 money would help to reduce the risk of corruption or opportunism, build trust, and engage Nigerians in the fight against coronavirus as well as safe lives.

“Transparency and accountability are important to implementing an effective response to COVID-19 and slowing the spread of the virus in the country”.

Banditry: Gov Matawalle Engages Bandits In Peace, Reconciliation Talks

By Akinwale Kasali

In a bid to tackle armed Banditry in his State,  Governor Bello Matawalle has decided to use the Carrot and Stick approach.

The Zamfara State government has described its peace and reconciliation initiative as the best way to address armed banditry.

A statement issued by Zailani Bappa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, Media and Communications, in Gusau on Sunday, said the best approach to curtail the excesses of armed bandits in the State is to engage them in a peace and reconciliation talks.

He dismissed the allegation that the state government was giving more attention to bandits as a result of the peace process, saying this was unfounded and mere fabrications by mischief makers.

According to him, a lot has been achieved by security operatives in the fight against unrepentant bandits who have continued to terrorise innocent citizens in the state and other parts of the north-western states.

Bappa said, “The position of the Gov. Bello Matawalle-led administration is very clear, which is a carrot and stick approach to the dialogue and peace process.

“Those who refuse to accept the peace process and those who renege on it are being faced with the wrath of the state’s ‘Operation Hadarin Daji’.

“We must not forget the successes recorded in the last few months included the rescue of 12 abducted persons, which included the District Head of Wuya, the killing of nine bandits and arrest of 12 others.

“It also included the recovery of 67 rustled cattle in separate operations held in Gidan Usman, Gidan Baba Goji, Gadauna, Gidan Janari, Kekuwaje, Gidan Sarki, Gardi and Bingi, all in Bungudu Local Government area of the state.”

Bappa, also, explained that with the support of the state government, the onslaught against bandits had led to the killing of 27 bandits around the state’s boundary with Katsina State and destruction of their homes at Nahuta-Doumborou.

The special adviser added that another 135 bandits were neutralised between Zamfara and Katsina states.

“Moreover, a large number of bandits were killed in an air raid on Tungar-Duba road, where six kidnapped persons were rescued from the fleeing bandits, while over 200 bandits in Zurmi council area were also neutralised recently.

“The governor, who is under oath to protect the lives and property of the people of the state, will not relent until peace is fully achieved in Zamfara State,” he said.

The governor had, of recent, come under heavy criticisms by some groups and individuals for his seeming inaction over the rising cases of armed banditry, kidnapping and rape in the state.

Obaseki parted ways with the APC last week after a fierce battle against alleged dictatorship and political godfatherism with his predecessor, and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole.

Governor Obaseki bid the Party farewell as a result of the overbearing influence of Oshiomhole, which played out  in his disqualification at the screening of Edo governorship aspirants in Abuja, a development which has generated political “bad blood” within the leadership, rank and file of the Party.

After a fruitful meeting with governor Obaseki, his deputy Philip Shaibu , some leaders and chieftains of PDP in Edo State, ahead of the September 19 governorship election; Governor Okowa assured that South-South Governors will throw their  weight behind Obaseki in the ongoing elections in the state.

Governor Okowa who doubles as the Chairman of the South-South PDP Governors Forum, appealed to all members of the party in Edo State, to ensure they work together to deliver the party in the coming elections, adding that PDP is a great party built around the people and would always work in the interest of the people.

“I welcome him today because in the spirit of the old Bendel, we are united as brothers.

“I want to thank our party people in Edo State for opening their arms to welcome the Governor,” Okowa said.

Responding, Obaseki thanked his Delta counterpart for the visit assuring that he will do everything possible to ensure victory for the party in the state.

He said the PDP is a big United party in Edo, adding that whoever emerges in the governorship primaries will get the support of the people.

Diplomacy: Nigerians In Ghana Send SOS To FG, Senator Sues For Peace

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Nigerians resident in Ghana have cried out to the federal government that they are no longer safe in the President Nana Akufo-Addo led West African nation.

The save our soul, SOS message came on the crest of the demolition of  part of the Nigerian High Commission in the West African country by yet-to-be identified persons.

Nigerians have faced series of attacks on their businesses from Ghanaians in the last few years.

Last year, over 600 shops belonging to foreigners, especially Nigerians, were forcefully sealed off at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle by the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).

Angry Ghanaians have been calling on Nigerians resident in their country to leave  because of the fear that foreigners, particularly Nigerians are in control of most businesses.

But President Akufo-Addo has assured that those behind the atrocity will be fished out and punished minutes after the federal government registered its anger with the Ghana authority over the issue.

In spite of this, hundreds of Nigerians living in the country said their safety could no longer be guaranteed, Sahara Reporters has reported.

Quoting some Nigerians from their various social media platforms, the online medium reported that Nigerians are tired of living in the country and are willing to return back to Nigeria.

One social media user was quoted to have said “If this can be done to our presidency, how much more, we ordinary citizens. That means we are not safe.”

Another also said in anger “Nigerians lives matter in Ghana. We are human beings. We are in our lane. Our lives are in danger.”

Another Nigerian, identified as @AjammaS said on his twitter handle, “This is very shameful, to imagine common Ghana to demolish Nigerian High Commission (building) in Accra without a harsh response from @MBuhari. I weep for Nigeria and Nigerians.

It can never happen during Abacha or OBJ (era).”

Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyema has sent a strong warning to the Ghanaian authority that the federal government will not accept attacks on her foreign mission.

Onyema who spoke on Sunday described the demolition of the Nigerian High Commission residential quarters in Accra, Ghana by unknown persons as ‘outrageous’ and ‘criminal’.

The minister called on the government of Ghana to fish out the culprit for punishment.

Onyema said the federal government is in talks with their counterpart in Ghana with a view to resolve the matter.

According to him “We strongly condemn two outrageous criminal attacks in Accra, Ghana, on a residential building in our diplomatic premises by unknown persons in which a bulldozer was used to demolish the building.

We are engaging the Ghanaian Government and demand urgent action to find the perpetrators and provide adequate protection for Nigerians and their property in Ghana.”

Meanwhile, Senator Shehu Sani, a rights activist has urged the two countries to maintain their friendly relations as neighbours, even as he condemned the demolition of part of Nigeria’s Mission by some hoodlums.

“It’s a serious breach of diplomatic and security protocol. The relations between the two countries should remain cordial and the perpetrators of the act must be brought to book,” Sani said on twitter.
