Dangote Denies Endorsing Obaseki For Second Term

0

Africa’s richest man and President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote has denied  endorsing Governor Godwin Obaseki for reelection in the September governorship election in Edo state.

The reaction came on the crest of report by an online medium that the phillantropist has endorsed the Edo helmsman for second term.

The phillantropist has insisted that he’s not a politician.

While reacting to the report, Anthony Chiejina, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Dangote Group, said the allegation that his boss endorsed Obaseki, was false.

He said the alleged statement alluded to Dangote, that he “shall continue to support his good and reliable friend, Mr. Godwin Obaseki known to have handled stocks and investment portfolios for Dangote Group”, was concocted by the sponsors of the report to achieve their evil purpose.

Chiejina said “Our attention has been drawn to an online publication titled “Edo Guber: Dangote endorses Godwin Obaseki for second tenure”, this is the first time that I have seen people publicly campaign for electoral office using the name of my boss and I have to stop it immediately so that others will not try it in future.

Dangote could not have made such statement, he said, because “The said interview allegedly granted by Aliko Dangote in Abuja is an outright falsehood, a malicious, irresponsible and mischievous act aimed at tarnishing my boss’s reputation.

“Aliko Dangote has not travelled out of Lagos since March 19, 2020. In fact, he has not crossed the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge since that date. His name and personality should not be drawn into any political campaign.”

The richest Blackman, he said is more focused on creating jobs for the teeming unemployed Nigerians and therefore, would not dabble into partisan politics.

According to Chiejina “Aliko Dangote is an entrepreneur and business leader whose focus is on development, job creation and philanthropy. He has not endorsed anyone for electoral positions in Edo or any other state of Nigeria.

“We caution the public to ignore claims from any quarter that associate the Dangote name or brand with partisan politics”Dangote

After N33 trn Debt, FG To Borrow More- Minister

Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed,minister of finance

By Fola James

The federal government will continue to borrow to finance critical projects, despite the spiralling debts level, the Minister of Finance, Budget & Planning,. Zainab Ahmed has said.

Ahmed disclosed this during the webinar organized by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, Fiscal Policy Roundtable & Tax Investment & Competitiveness Policy Commission. She was represented by. Sarah Alade, the Special Adviser to the President on Finance & Economy.

She said, the Coronavirus pandemic and the slump in the price of crude oil have made it absolutely necessary to borrow.
The minister said Nigeria had faced a hard time ahead of the COVID 19,adding that the global pandemic only made things worst.

According to her We’ve had to grapple with low revenue, even before the pandemic. We had high debt, weak infrastructure base, low human capital and low revenue that is largely dependent on the foreign exchange earned from oil. So, there are many things we have loved to do that we cannot do.

Due to the global economic slowdown and the revenue issues, what we are expecting is a GDP that would contract, in the best case scenario, by about 4.4 per cent and in the worst case scenario, it could be about eight per cent or more.” She said.

Furthermore, it was disclosed that Nigerians risk losing about 21 million jobs as a result of the pandemic. Hence, there is a need to put things in place in order to ensure rise in revenue.”
She explained that government is desperately need to borrow to create jobs and refloat the economy.
She said “We are in a very difficult situation but we are trying to manage that because if nothing is done, up to about 21 million jobs could also be affected by the impact of the pandemic. So, with all these statistics, we cannot overemphasise the importance of raising revenue.”
The borrowed funds will be used to fund developmental projects across critical sectors.

The minister said “We also have the establishment of an N86bn intervention fund for health infrastructure; conversion of World Bank Regional disease surveillance system enhancement programme to support COVID-19 intervention in the states; accelerating infrastructural development; preparation of a Fiscal Stimulus Bill to provide legislative backing for the fiscal stimulus packages that we have; deregulation of the price of refined petroleum products – we know how important that is, given the amount of money that we spent in that area.

We also have the adoption of financing plan for the power sector recovery programme; incentivising the use of up to N2tn of pension funds for roads and housing development, supporting and encouraging states to achieve state fiscal transparency and accountability, sustainability and other World Bank programme actions in order to access external support and we are collaborating with state governments on affordable mass housing.”
No way out than to borrow, she said, insisting that the loans will be negotiated in favour of Nigeria.

“To achieve all these, we will have to keep mobilising external funding and seek debt relief. We continue to engage with the multilateral and donor agencies to access additional funding for crisis response, we seek moratorium from official partners for some of the loans that we have and support arrangement to secure commercial debt relief.” She said.

However, it was stated that had the revenue performed wonderfully well, there might be no need to secure foreign debt.

“If the revenue had performed, then we probably will not be seeking this much support from external sources, we know we cannot but keep working at generating more revenue so that the economy can be better for it.”

Nigeria’s local & foreign Debts stand at N33 trillion naira according to the Debt Management Office, DMO.
The national assembly has recently given the federal government the go ahead to borrow $27.5 billion.

Edo: Ize-Iyamu Says Oshiomhole Lied, Faults Sacked Chairman’s Acid Story; Admits Membership Of Pyrates

Ize Iyamu

By Adesina Soyooye

In a bid to undo the damage done to his name and image by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the recently sacked National Chairman of the All Progressives Party, APC, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the Governorship candidate of the party, has, without using the word, called Oshiomhole a liar.

Ize-Iyamu said that contrary to what Oshiomhole fed the public, he never poured acid on any student at the University of Benin. He, however admitted to being a member of the Pyrate Confraternity. He also admitted to having been rusticated by the University, but said he eventually went back  read law, graduated, and  went to the Law school.

Oshiomhole  had, in 2016, when Ize-Iyamu contested for the Governorship seat under the PDP, publicly called him all sorts of unprintable names, including a school drop-out, and alleging that as a student of the University of Benin, Ize-Iyamu was a cultist, and had poured acid on a student. He also said he was rusticated from school over the incident.

But speaking on an online television interview, on Sunday, in Benin, Ize-Iyamu said he never poured acid on anybody.

He explained that he was a strong Students Union Leader, and a member of the Pyrates Confraternity.

And that, on the day of the incident, he was the one who reported the matter, and saw to it that the student who was poured acid on, got first aid treatment.

Ize-Iyamu said he had entered the University in 1980 to read Political Science, but later changed to read law. He did not graduate until 1986 because he was rusticated from the University.

His story: “When I was in the University, I was a member of the Pyrates Confraternity.  At that time, we didn’t look at it as a cult arrangement, but some people were already coming in with tendencies that created problems. We had this very confrontational group, and one evening, somebody reported to us that they beat up a final year student who was also very close to us, and they mentioned the names of those involved, and we said no, this is bad.

“Don’t, also,  forget that I was a student union leader, very prominent in the students’ union congress. So, myself and some others who heard about this complaint said let’s go and see the people concerned, and talk to them.

“We went there and saw the people concerned, they opened the door for us, and we were  discussing the matter under a very cordial atmosphere, only for some people to come in and before we knew it, there was smoke in the whole place and somebody shouted acid, and somebody was shouting and screaming.

It was then I realised that somebody has poured acid on somebody, and I quickly ran to the security post. I brought them in, and we took the young man to get first aid treatment.”

He said the school set up an Inquiry, and that the victim identified him as the one who reported to the Security, and helped with first aid. But because nobody could say who poured the acid on the victim, they were all rusticated for belonging to a proscribed organisation.

Ize-Iyamu said the case was on for two years, and that the Senate finally met, and called them back because they were not the ones that poured the acid.

“I graduated and went to law school”

Oshiomhole is a member of the APC Council to campaign for Ize-Iyamu.

How he will cope with the serious allegations he made against him on the Campaign train, is better imagined.

Jonathan, Kenyatta Urge Africa Leaders To Work Together To Combat Covid-19, Terrorism

0
Goodluck Jonathan and Uhuru Kenyatta

Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, and former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan have called for closer collaboration among African leaders as a means of deepening Africa’s post-covid-19 recovery efforts and finding answers to the continent’s growth and development challenges.

Both leaders recognised the prominent role played by Africa Centre for Disease Control (CDC), the Africa Covid-19 Fund and the joint Africa procurement platform in Covid-19 response as a demonstration of  the continent’s potential to overcome its development challenges, going forward.

They spoke Saturday evening during a webinar on post Covid-19 reconstruction organised by the African chapter of the International Summit Council for Peace (ISCP-Africa). They, also, were joined on the programme by  former Central African Republic President Catherine Samba-Panza and ex-President of Madagascar Hery Rajaonarimampianina. ISCP-Africa  which is chaired by former President Jonathan is an international network of current and former Heads of State and Government who use dialogue to address global challenges among them climate change, conflict and, poverty.

President Kenyatta urged African leaders to continue working together in crafting interventions and solutions that would enhance resilience of the continent’s vulnerable populations.

“We should work in collaboration with our development partners to build capacity for local production of health equipment and to strengthen our local manufacturing capacity more generally,” he said. He also observed that African leaders had for the first time, extended their cooperation and collaboration by taking joint actions with nations of the Caribbean community.

Noting further that Africa is stronger together, President Kenyatta said: “Whatever it is that we want to put across shall not be owned by individual nations but by all of Africa and should be applied to save humanity.

In his earlier comment as chairman of the forum, President Jonathan  stressed that African leaders must come together to collectively confront the challenges facing the continent, especially social, economic and governance issues.

He said: “The COVID-19 pandemic places urgency of actions on African leaders to move from plans to implementations of the different developmental strategies. I am particularly optimistic that conversations such as this will chart a new course towards building a new world; an interdependent peaceful and just nations of Africa.

“What changes can we bring to bear to enable us manage governance structures and democratic processes in Africa better?  How do we manage our political issues to reduce conflict and promote good governance? How can we improve our economies to withstand the negative impact due to this pandemic?”

Dr. Jonathan further charged African leaders to seriously consider the option of coming together as one body to confront insecurity and terrorism, rather than allowing different countries to fight individually. “Terrorists do not respect national boundaries as they move from one country to another. If we continue to approach it the way we presently do with national troops fighting only to protect their territories while terrorists move freely within the continent, we may not record the required progress.

He said further: “There is a need for us to re-examine our strategy in order to make it possible for the creation of continental and regional bodies that could confront these criminals in any part of the continent. We have been fighting individually without the required success. We cannot continue to do the same thing all the time and expect to get different results.”

The former Central African Republic President Dr Samba-Panzi said Africa’s response to Covid-19 should give more prominence to women, adding that they play the same role at the household level as frontline health workers.

Why Oyo Dep.Gov. Was Barred From Ajimobi’s Today Prayers; Family Apologises

0
Oyo Deputy Gov

By Adesina Soyooye

For the second time in one week, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State; Rauf Olaniyan, was humiliated by  the family of the former Governor of the State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

At the Eight Day Fidau prayers held Sunday morning, Olaniyan was barred from entering the residence – venue of the prayers.

Security men who barred him, and the representatives of the state government, said it was on the orders of Mrs Florence Ajimobi.

The Deputy Governor and others had arrived the gate to the Oluyole Estate residence of the Ajimobi’s in a convoy of five cars, but were refused entry into the Estate. An arguement which was, finally, settled by a senior police officer ensued, and only the car occupied by the DG was allowed to enter the Estate.

But that was the beginning of Olaniyan’s embarrassment and humiliation. When he got  to the entrance gate of the Ajimobi’s, he was refused entry, even after he was introduced by his aides.

The gate was firmly locked, and he was told it couldn’t be opened because “Madam had the key with her”. But he was asked to wait. Having stood by the gate for an alleged 15 minutes, he turned, and left.

But explaining the Ajimobi’s side of the story, the late Governor’s media aide, Bolaji Tunji, while not denying that Olaniyan was denied entry, said the family was unaware that he would attend the Fidau prayers.

He said the ceremony was strictly a family affair, and that no protocol official came, earlier, to inform them the DG would attend.

He said that by the time they sorted it out, the Deputy Governor had left.

He added: “Through a serving Senator and a former Attorney General, we tried to get in touch with him that it was not to slight him, and he could sit in a private sitting room provided by the family. Unfortunately, he had left. We, however, apologise to his Excellency.”

On the day of Ajimobi’s funeral, his wife had, also, tackled the DG for neither phoning her to ask after her husband’s health, nor console with the family after his death. When the DG said he called her, she retorted: “I am a politician’s wife. I do not pick numbers I don’t know.  I don’t know your number. You should have sent a text message”.

She also publicly berated the state governor, Seyi Makinde, for not consoling with the family on her husband’s death. “You treated my husband shabbily,” she noted.

But the Government explained that she neither informed it of her husband’s ill health, nor his passing.

On Sunday, the day of the Fidau prayers, Governor Makinde  placed newspaper adverts on behalf of the Government and people of the state, mourning Ajimobi, and extolling his qualities.

What Does It Matter If She Was Raped Or Not? – A Rejoinder To Your Story – Mother Of Triplets Is A Scammer

0
Mother of Triplet

By Vivien Uba

This is with regards to your posting that the mother of triplets is a scammer. I am appalled and dismayed at this piece. I am from this young lady’s village. It is not in dispute whether she had the triplets or not. We have verified the veracity of her claim.

What does it matter whether she was raped or not?

First, no one can categorically answer that question. No one was present when the act was done. Immaterial, anyway. This is the very reason that victims of rape are reluctant to come forward. No one believes them. Also, are you saying that someone who has been pregnant in the past cannot be raped?

Again, I ask, what does it matter whether she was raped or not?

The focus should be on the three innocent, helpless children. The story of their birth is a miracle. To be pregnant and not know that you are going to have triplets, shows that there was no prenatal care. There is a great need here. She is from an extremely poor background, sleeping on the floor with her mother in a dilapidated house with leaking roof. The care of these three children will be an economic challenge for the young mother.

No one is obligated to help her, but no one has the right to malign her. Let us address the real issues here – the great need for affordable medical care, especially antenatal care. Nigeria is ranked extremely high in infant mortality rate in the world.

Mother of Triplet

Let us not play politics with this important health crisis. She needs help. Period. Assist, if you can or leave it alone. I will be happy to post pictures and other verified information.

Remain blessed,

Vivien Uba, Esq.

Our Response

Dear Vivien,

It is IMPORTANT  for you to know that  it was not our story per se.; That the allegation concerning her alleged false claim of rape DID NOT EMANATE from us ; That we had, a day earlier, carried her story, as narrated by her.

That the next day, we only carried a reaction to the story by somebody from her community, who knows her very well, and had already sent money to help her situation, but deplored her claim of rape, telling her she lied on that score.

It might interest you to know that a couple of the help she has received, so far, emanated from the first story we carried, and the personal contact we made to individuals and, in our own way, to a caring government.

It is important that you and other commentators understand the sequence.

Rape or no Rape, we believe that a 20-year old unmarried, and underprivileged woman, who gave birth to Triplets definitely needs help. But should also be reprimanded if her claim of rape is false.

Incidentally, we neither judged, not reprimanded her. We only carried an observation by somebody who helped her.

We are, also, happy to have drawn people’s attention to her without making any noise about it. And would do so again, as we have always done, without making it public, given the same circumstances.

Have a great week.

Kanye West Joins USA Presidential Race

Kanye West

By Akinwale Kasali

American Rapper, Singer, Songwriter, Record Producer, Composer, Entrepreneur and Fashion Designer, Kanye Omari West, has announced his plans to join the 2020 US Presidential race.

The 43-year-old Billionaire made the announcement on Saturday night, July 4, via his official Twitter account.

He wrote: “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION.”

The announcement was endorsed by Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk who tweeted: “You have my full support!”

West is married to Kim Kardashian and he is worth $1.3 Billion.

It would be recalled that at the MTV VMAs in 2015, West first announced that he would be running for president in 2020.

“As you probably could have guessed by this moment, in 2020, I have decided to run for president,” he said.

Last November, during a speech at the Fast Company Innovation Festival, he announced again he would be running in 2024.

When the audience laughed at his announcement, West replied, “What y’all laughing at? We would create so many jobs! I’m not going to run, I’m going to walk.”

It is not clear under which platform West intends to contest, as it is clear that both the Republican and Democratic parties would field President Donald Trump and Mr Joe Biden respectively.

And, it does seem that the window for an independent candidacy has closed.

Imo Politics : PDP Consumes Entire UPP

0

By Adesina Soyooye

It may not be a big merger. And its product may not be called a mega party. But it was very significant.

And, for the Imo State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which is desperate to get back to power in 2023/2024, it is a good start.

On Saturday, July 4, 2020, the PDP swallowed the whole of the United Peoples Party, UPP. It consumed the party and its members.

The entire leadership of the party from the Ward straight to highest office in the state, became members of the PDP. Meaning that in Imo state, the UPP is now non-existent.

Since the PDP lost power in January to the APC in January, and suddenly became the opposition, no thanks to a Supreme Court Judgement which sacked the Rt Honourable Emeka Ihedioha, and paved the way for the APC, its Secretariat has not been as busy as it was this Saturday.

As it received into its fold, the entire leadership and membership of the UPP,  joy was the word. It was infectious. And, hi- five reigned.

The feelings were worth it. Usually, smaller parties rarely empty into opposition parties. They empty into ruling parties. That is why the event was epoch-making.

Observers attribute it to the strong leadership quality of the party in the state, especially, the calm and mature qualities of the party’s Secretary,  Nze Ray Emeana. “His calm and mature nature are a balm when everthing is boiling”, a staunch party member told this magazine, adding: “The party’s leadership is strong, United and focused “.

Considering the collapse of the party’s entire structures in the 305 Wards and 27 LGAs into PDP, the ceremony is  the first of its kind in the history of the movement of politicians and parties from one party to the other in the country.

The PDP state Chairman, Sir Martin Ejiogu, saluted the new entrants for their wisdom.

In his address he thanked the leaders and members of Imo UPP, “for their wise decision to join Imo PDP en masse.”

Going  down memory lane, he revealed that many of them were original members of the PDP before trying their political fortunes in other parties. For the Imo PDP, therefore,  theirs was a return to their original political home.

Sir Ejiogu assured them “that they will enjoy fairness, equity and justice in PDP.” He also urged them to brace up to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the party by abiding with the ideology and principles of the PDP, which is anchored on egalitarianism, rule of law and due process.

A similar reception ceremony will be held at the 27 local governments and 305 wards in the State very soon.

In his address, Hon. Chief Ejike Uche,  who was the Deputy National Chairman of UPP and leader of the party in Imo State, explained that their party happened to be among the political parties delisted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently. “After serious deliberations and critical analyses of the political climate and environment,  as well as the realities in the Nigerian polity at the moment, we concluded that the PDP is the only stable party in Nigeria, with a lot of prospects and goodwill for the genuine restoration of unity, peace and love in the country. Our decision to join the PDP was unanimously reached after due process, in accordance with laid down procedures.

Our membership is quite large in the State, but because of Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, we came in few numbers.”

He promised to ensure that he and their members would contributed to the further development of PDP, and engineer the party’s victory in future elections in the various wards where they have strength with their individual and collective political structures.

In his remark before introducing 28 Imo UPP State Working Committee (SWC) members, and their 27 LGA Chairmen/Chairperson that were on the delegation, the UPP State Chairman, Engr. Benjamin Ehirim, corroborated  Chief  Uche’s submission, adding that PDP is the choice party as the truly democratic party in Nigeria. He said: Though PDP is a very big and strong party, the joining of Imo UPP will make PDP bigger and stronger than ever.”

NNPC: Controversy Trails Ewubare’s Resignation

0

By Fola James

The dusts raised by the sudden resignation of Roland Ewubare, the Chief Operating Officer, Joint Ventures and Business Development, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC, have not settled yet.

Ewubare resigned from the group last Wednesday adding, to join his family in the United States of America, USA, he said.

Before his redeployment a few months ago, Ewubare was the Group General Manager, National Petroleum Investments and Management Services (NAPIMS) and was the Managing Director of the Integrated Data Services Limited, IDSL.

There are, however, many negative suggestions to his resignation. But he denied being frustrated out of the government owned oil firm.

“I’m leaving to return to my family in the United States. I have been in NNPC for five years, mostly away from them. With the pandemic, I can’t travel to visit them and they can’t come to visit me. It’s tough.

At the core, I’m a family man. Stepping down solely for personal family reasons. That’s the truth,” he said in response to insinuations that his exit from NNPC was caused by the disagreement with, Melee Kyari, NNPC Group Managing Director.

He explained that there’s no problem with the NNPC boss, who he has supported since he replaced Maikanti Baru in June 2019.

Baru later died in May this year.

Ewubare said his resignation arose from the need to join his family in the  USA, having been away from them for so long due to the COVID 19 lock down.

But the magazine learnt that Ewubare has been dissatisfied with his fortune which has nose-dived since the new management came into office.

Apart from losing his former choice position in the corporation, Ewubare believed his closeness to the former NNPC boss has been used to victimize him, close sources say.

“There was no other option than to resign from his joy, which he considered no longer fulfilling since the new management came into office,” a source said.

The NNPC had in May said the major shake-up was carried out to set the corporation in the right direction.

It said those redeployed got their positions based on merit and competence.

According to Dr. Kennie Obateru, the spokesperson of the corporation, top management staff of the corporation were redeployed based on their verifiable track records of performance.
