The crisis rocking the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, had taken another dimension.

Following the series of accusations and counter- accusations from the Minister For Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill  Akpabio, and the former Acting Managing Director of the Interim Board of the NDDC, Joy Nuneih, the Rivers State Government has warned Akpabio to not mess with Nunieh.

The former NDDC boss is a daughter of Rivers State.

The Rivers state government in giving Akpabio notice, warned   that nothing must happen to Nunieh.

A statement by Paulinus Nsirim, the state  Commissioner for Information reads:

“Rivers State Government has viewed with concern, the recent developments at the Niger Delta Development Commission(NDDC) in which the name of our daughter, Dr. Joi Nunieh, the immediate past Acting Managing Director of the Commission, has been dragged into.

“We hereby call on those involved in the ongoing investigations in the NDDC to ensure that Dr. Joi Nunieh does not suffer any harm in the course of their undertakings.

“We wish to state categorically that the Rivers State Government will never support any action that will prevent or jeopardize the laudable intentions of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, to positively reposition the NDDC and fulfill the yearnings and aspirations of the people of the Niger Delta.

“However, we wish to state that while we are not interested in identifying with the present unfolding drama in the NDDC, we will not  fail to protect our daughter from actual harm, or perceived danger.

“The State owes it as a duty to protect her citizens from danger, no matter their political affiliation, and we cannot fold our hands and watch anyone harm her or indeed any Rivers citizen.

“We advise those involved in the present altercations in the NDDC to thread with caution in their actions and utterances”.

Breaking: Buhari Shuns Senate, Backs Keyamo; Showdown Looms

The Presidency and the Senate may be heading for a showdown, unless frayed  nerves are quickly calmed.

Festus Keyamo, SAN, Minister for State, Labour, had had a shouting match with the Senate over the recruitment of 774, 000 youths as ordered by the President.

But during an invitation  to the Senate to brief members on the modalities, they accused  the Minister of running a one-man show, thus, shutting even the NDE out. They had said it was the job of the NDE to carry out the recruitment.

Keyamo rejected their claim, and when he wanted to explain, the Senate had requested for a closed door meeting with him, without the Media. But Keyamo rejected that, arguing that having accused him before the Media, the Media should be present during his defence.

Not comfortable with that, they asked Keyamo out, threatening to report him to the President. A shouting match ensued, during which the Minister accused them of wanting to hijack the process for selfish reasons.

The Senate, thereafter, suspended the recruitment exercise. And even though the Minister for Labour, Dr Chris Ngige, had appeared before the Senate and apologised on behalf of Keyamo, neither the Senate not Keyamo shifted ground.

But Tuesday afternoon, the President gave his verdict, and took sides with his Minister, Keyamo.

Announcing his vindication in text messages to Media Houses, Keyamo quipped: “I have the instructions of my boss, Mr President, to proceed with the supervision of the preparation for the execution of the programme, in accordance with the law.”

Indeed, Keyamo had, earlier; told them that the exercise is a baby of the Executive arm of the Government, not that of the Legislative arm.

There has been no reaction from the Senate. Opinion, however, are there there is little the Senate can do to stop the exercise.

IGP Washes Hands Off Magu, Says He Can’t Grant Him Bail

By Adesina Soyooye

The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu, has washed his hands off the case of suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu. The IGP is being represented on the Presidential Panel probing Magu, but it is not the IGP’s case.

Magu has been under the custody of the Police since July the 6th, when he was intercepted by Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP, Gabriel Elaigwu, on his way to the Force Headquarters for a meeting, and rail-roaded to a Presidential Panel investigating allegations against him.

The five-man panel is headed by a retired President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Ayo Salami.

The allegations, 22 in number, were levelled against Magu, by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN.

Magu, a Commissioner of Police, thought that being a Police Officer, having been arrested by a Police Officer, and being in the custody of the Police, he could get relief from his constituency, the Police.

One of his Counsels, Oluwatosin Ojaomo, had, based on those, sent a letter to the IGP, asking him to grant the suspended Chairman, bail in self recognizance.

He had said he was hopeful his client would be granted bail on Monday.

But it was not to be.

The IGP refused to attend to the request, explaining that it was not in his territory to grant Magu bail. That Magu’s fate was not in his hands. That his case had nothing to do with his being a Police Officer.

And that even though the IGP is represented on the Panel by the DIG FCID, it was not the IGP’s Panel.

Giving reasons why the IGP cannot give Magu bail while speaking to The Sun, Force Spokesperson, DCP Frank Mba, said Magu is in custody on the orders of the Presidential Panel, and that only the Panel could grant such request.

Mba: “It is a probe by a Federal Government Panel. Therefore, all enquiries concerning the probe, or relating to actions incidental  to the probe, should be directed to the Panel that is handling the probe”

Another of Magu’s Counsels, Wahab Shittu, had earlier written a letter to the Chairman of the Presidential Panel, appealing that Magu be granted bail. Among other reasons, why he should be granted bail, Shittu cited Magu’s deteriorating health.

In March, Magu was, allegedly, at a Dubai hospital for a medical situation.

CBN Bans Importation of Maize, Fear Over Rising Costs Of Food Items

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has added maize to the list of banned food items in the country, raising fears of worsening costs of basic food items in the country.

Sporadic complaints over rising costs of staple food have mounted among average Nigerian in the last few weeks, and analysts insist that the CBN could worsen the situation of many households over its decision to include maize to the number of already banned food items.

According to a circular no TED/FEM/FPC/GEN/01/004, released on Monday the apex bank said it would no longer make foreign exchange available to importers of maize/ corn.

“As part of efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria to increase local production, stimulate a rapid economic recovery, safeguard rural livelihoods, and increase jobs which were lost as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Authorised Dealers are hereby directed to discontinue the processing of Forms M for the importation of Maize/Corn with immediate effect,” CBN said in the memo.

In 2019 alone, the country spent a whopping $1.3 billion on cereals alone, checks by the magazine have revealed.

Recall that in 2015 the government bank banned 41 items from being imported into the country.

Since then, more items have been added to the list of prohibited item which many believed was done to reduce pressure on the sliding value of the national currency, naira.

The new directive came on the crest of devaluation of naira to N380 to the dollar by the CBN, the second in less than three months, after the currency was devalued by five per cent in April this year.

The Godwin Emefiele’s led CBN said the prohibition will promote the local production of maize and stimulate economic growth in the country, but analysts insist that the decision is more of stabilizing the naira which has been badly hit as a result loss in foreign exchange earnings due to sliding crude oil prices in the international market.

According to the notice addressed to authorised dealers and signed by Dr O.S Nnaji, CBN’s Director in charge of Trade and Exchange Department, the apex bank cited four reasons why it arrived at the decision.

They are, to increase local production of corn/maize; stimulate a rapid economic recovery; safeguard rural livelihoods and increase jobs.

As part of the implementation process, the CBN directed all the authorised dealers to return all the Forms M they have already registered for the purpose of importing maize. They are to return the forms on or by the end of work tomorrow, July 15, 2020, the memo said.

The CBN said“Accordingly, all Authorised Dealers are hereby requested to submit the list of Forms M already registered for the importation of Maize/Corn using the attached format on or before the close of business on Wednesday July 15, 2020. Please ensure strict compliance.”

Meanwhile, analysts told the magazine that this is one of the extreme measures taken by the CBN to defend the naira.

The implications of this method, according to economic analysts is that the price of corn, a major staple for many Nigerians will shot up, thereby making unaffordable for many poor households.

“The prices of essential food items are already blown beyond the roof top. Rice, beans and other cereals have become too costly due to many factors, including problems being faced by farmers from bandits, boko haram and killer herdsmen, which have drastically reduced farming last season.

Apart from this, flooding due to excessive rainfall across the country’s farming belts have reduced the production of farm produce. When we add the economic shutdown, due to the corona virus pandemic to these, you will understand that the problems of food shortages loom large,” Feyisola Adams, an economic analyst told the magazine.

She explained that rather than stop the importation of basic food items “what the government needs to do now is to embark on massive food importation of essential food products and open the borders shut last year. This measure will not only force the prices of foodstuffs down, it will assure many Nigerians that the government is helping them to cope with the devastating effects of COVid 19,” she stated.

However, other analysts informed the magazine that the tough measure is necessary to save the naira from collapsing as well as protect the economy.

Imo Loses Col. Ihenacho, Hon.Justice Anwuka

Lambert Ihenacho

By Charles Igbo

Imo State has, in the past few days, lost two prominent individuals.

Col. Lambert Ihenacho, both of the Biafran and Nigerian Army, passed on last Wednesday. And so did Hon. Justice Christy Anwuka.

Ihenacho, an alumni of the University of Nigeria,  Nsukka, retired from the Nigeria Army in 1990.

He was the last Biafran Army Commander of the then famous 63 Infantry Brigade which recaptured  Owerri, in 1969, from the Nigerian Army during the Civil war which ended in 1970.

Since his retirement, Col Ihenacho had been living in Owerri, from where he was contributing to national and local discourse.

The cause of death has not yet been made public.

The Hon. Justice Christy Anwuka was, until her death, a Judge of the Customary Court of Appeal, Owerri. She had, also, acted as the President of the Court.

She was married to Professor Tony Anwuka, a former Minister for State, Education, during President Muhammadu Buhari’s first tenure.

Hon. Justice Christy Anwuka

An inlaw to former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, whose nominee to Buhari’s cabinet he was, Professor Anwuka was not reappointed during Buhari’s second coming.

His place was taken by Hon. Barr Emeka Nwajiuba, the current Minister of State, Education.

Awuka, a Professor of Education, was also a former Vice Chancellor of Imo State University, and a former Secretary to the Imo State Government.

Unconfirmed reports disclosed that Justice Anwuka died of an injury she sustained from a fall, in a domestic accident, during which she, allegedly, lost a tooth, which later got infected.

Speculation is that she passed on in the United States of America.

One of her sons, Uzoma, is married to Okorocha’s second daughter, Uju.

Since her passing,  members of her family, members of the Imo State Judiciary, and members of  her husband’s constituency, the Academia, have been inconsolable.

NDDC: Akpabio In More Troubles As PDP, Others Demand His Sack

0

By Fola James

The Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio has been struggling to dismiss the allegation of corruption against him by a former Acting Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commision, NDDC, Joy Nunieh.

But the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has now made his case worse after demanding that he stepped down from office to allow a through probe of the matter by the federal government.

Nunieh, last week, after attending a probe session at the National Assembly, Abuja, caused a stir after accusing the minister of gross corruption, among which, is that the minister awarded 30 contracts to himself in one day.

She also accused the minister of sexually harassing her, which at appoint earned him a slap from the former NDDC boss.

Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom state has debunked the allegations, and counter allegations have been flying from both sides since.

Some Nigerians, including the PDP are worried that Akpabio continued stay in office is capable of compromising investigations judging from past experience in the past.

On Monday, Kola Ologbodiyan, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, in a statement demanded that Akpabio should step down from office, to allow a thorough probe of the saga.

The PDP said the corruption saga in the interventionist agency has blown open the recklessness and carelessness of top public officials in the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Part of the statement reads “the silence and inaction by the Buhari Presidency and the APC since the uncovering of the fraud in the NDDC signpost complicity at the highest levels as well as validate public stance that treasury looting and cover up for corrupt persons are normal official statecraft and manifesto of the APC and the Buhari administration.

Nigerians are still in a state of shock over reports of how the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Akpabio allegedly bullied officials to pillage the Commission’s foreign currency account; how the laid down procedures of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) are allegedly circumvented to siphon unapproved budgets as well as how innocent workers and federal legislators, who are averse to corrupt practices, were victimised, implicated and even harassed with fetish practices.”

The party said it is “more distressing is that the Buhari Presidency and the APC had remained silent even when the embattled minister has not provided any concrete defense to the allegations beyond personal attacks on the whistleblower.

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio”

The PDP said the administration must do everything to get to the bottom of the corruption saga, adding that the NDDC is a breeding ground for corruption.

“Nigerians will recall that our party had in April alerted of massive looting in the NDDC and called for an investigation, which was however not addressed by the government.

Our party had also alerted that the NDDC management has not been able to give a cogent explanation to the reported Lassa fever contract fraud through which over N4 billion Naira NDDC fund was alleged to have been frittered on hazy procurement deals.

This is in addition to alleged N5.5 billion COVID-19 scandal which trails reports that the NDDC had already spent over N1.045 billion purportedly for supply of kits and palliatives to Nigerians in nine states,” PDP said, adding that the administration must show to Nigerians its seriousness in fighting graft.

Meanwhile, Akpabio has denied that allegations, he said the former NDDC boss is an unstable character.

In response to the allegations, Akpabio said “let me just point this out, the last managing director that you mentioned, no matter the allegation, I wish she would go to a hospital, see a doctor and then get some injections and relax.”

I am not saying something is wrong with her, I am saying something is wrong with her temperament. You don’t need to ask me, you can ask about four other husbands she married.”

Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu

In  a further move to douse rumours of his disqualification by the All Progressives Congress, (APC) screening Committee,  from contesting the Party’s primary, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has taken to his Twitter page, announcing that he is currently meeting with representatives of Workers’ Union in Akure.

The state was agog at the weekend with rumour that Akeredolu has been disqualified from participating in the APC primary election to pick it’s flagbearer, slated for July 20.

The governor said that he was  presently in Akure holding meeting to address issues raised by the workers in their letter  to him, last week, in which they gave up till Wednesday for government to meet their demands.

“Trust we shall all reach a compromise that is beneficial to all parties.

“I’d also like to wish my fellow aspirants that is to meet the @OfficialAPCNg appeals committee in Abuja today all the best. ”

The workers had accused the state government of not settling arrears of salaries inherited from the immediate past administration and non- payment of leave arears and other benefits.

Recall that Akeredolu, at the inception of his administration, paid up the seven months salaries owed workers in the state.

$800 Million Alleged Oil Fraud: Timi Frank Demands Buhari’s Resignation As Petroleum Minister

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Political Activist, Comrade Timi Frank, has condemned series of allegations of corruption currently in the country, especially the alleged $800million oil fraud. For the alleged fraud, he is demanding for the immediate resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari as Petroleum Minister.

Frank made this demand while calling on the National Assembly to thoroughly probe the alleged fraud in the oil sector as reported in the media.

The former APC stalwart said it is worrisome that such a huge amount of money got from the oil rich Niger Delta region could be stolen while the region is lacking in every developmental indices like good schools, hospital, good roads and more.

In a series of tweets on Monday morning, Frank expressed contempt over the way President Buhari is running the affairs of Nigeria.

The blunt and relentless political commentator highlighted some of the loots ravaging the system, as he called on the attention of the international community to provide succour.

In a statement he signed, Frank said: “$800million Sales of Crude Funds stolen as alleged by an online media Pointblank. Gen Muhammadu Buhari @MBuhari should resign as Petroleum Minister. Under his watch, he has failed the citizens and Nigerians cannot breathe anymore. I call on the oil producing community and Niger Delta Region at large to protest this current looting.

“This is exactly what the musical Prophet Fela called ‘Authority stealing pass armed robbery’. We are disappointed that corruption has eaten deep into Nigeria, and Nigerians can’t even breath.  The fight against corruption and insecurity was just one of those campaign gimmicks General Buhari used in deceiving Nigerians.

“All those who are part of this $800million must be brought to book. This case must not be swept under the carpet. The 9th Assembly must probe these allegations.”

Frank also called on the International Community to place visa ban on all those involved in the alleged looting.

“I call on the International communities, US, UK and all to place Visa ban on these looters and their families. This is a way they can help Nigeria to support the fight against corruption. Corruption has raptured the entire country. No government has looted Nigeria dry like Buhari’s government. Our security, educational and healthcare systems have failed. Poverty, hunger and unemployment are now friends to the system.

“No Government has given Nigeria a bad image in recent times like General Buhari’s Government; this administration has put a dent to Nigeria’s image internationally.

Recall that Frank, during the President Goodluck Jonathan Government, also made a series of allegations bordering on corruption against that government and its officials. None of it was proved. He was to apologise to Jonathan for attacking him the way he did when Jonathan left office.

In Defense Of The Nigerian Woman

0

By Seriake Dickson

I wish to commend President Buhari for the appointment of Mrs Nimi Akinkugbe as the Ambassadorial Nominee representing Ondo State, the state she is married to, the state of her husband and her children and the state she will spend the rest of her life in hopefully.

I condemn the voices that have risen in opposition to her nomination not on account of her competence, experience, capacity or character but only on the basis that she is parentally from Rivers State.

These are the sort of sentiments that have held our country and continent from achieving its true potentials in sourcing for leadership which is critical for national development. Except during football matches, Nigerians are hardly United about the need for quality representation in National leadership. In business, politics and even professions, primordial and ethnic sentiments override rational thinking depriving the country of its best leadership resource in critical areas at critical times.

In the case of women, our mothers, our wives, our sisters our daughters and our friends, this irrational, divisive and discriminatory syndrome takes a more ridiculous dimension. In the 21st century Nigeria, some Nigerians still hold the view that our daughters who get married to persons from states other than the states of their fathers should be penalized and should suffer discrimination even when they are qualified for positions from that state. To begin with, they have no control over the states they marry into. As women, they marry for love. They follow their hearts and that is how nature has made it and we are all products of that.

Those who constantly oppose our daughters believe that whereas their children, grandchildren and descendants can be anything in those states, the women have to go “back to sender” and cannot derive any benefit from the states of their husbands.

We must all unite against this mindset and I am glad that the President nominated Mrs Akinkugbe and has ignored all opposition to her nomination so far. I hope it remains so.

Nigerian women leaders should organize themselves for positive change and these are the sort of issues in addition to several others they should tackle with our support. The underlying mindset behind this sentiment is the idea that women are properties, ordinary chattel, things that are owned with no rights, feelings or dignity of their own as opposed to being persons with equal rights and ambition. To them, our women could have children, grandchildren, may even be breadwinners, supporting, feeding and educating families of their husbands and be sisters and mothers to them as most do yet they remain properties and chattels, after all, they are women.

This is the primitive mindset that encourages rape as well as other acts of violence against women which have become endemic. I strongly condemn this notion and this is what we must collectively challenge.

Even when our daughters are nominated from the states of their fathers, there are still voices of opposition who say “why are they taking the slots of their father’s states instead of their husband’s states?”, this is not peculiar to Ondo State. I witnessed this as Governor of  Bayelsa State in the case of Diezani Allison Madueke, a Bayelsan married to a man from Enugu. Nigerians also remember the controversy surrounding the appointment of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, from Delta State married to a man from Abia.

There are several other instances at the national level and more at state level appointments that we may not know of.

If highly educated, enlightened women known locally and around the world can suffer this discrimination in Nigeria, then one can imagine the daily discrimination, indignity and oppression that our women who are not privileged are subjected to in their rural communities across Nigeria and in the developing world. This is the reason why people in Leadership must do more for girl child education and involvement and empowerment of women.

As Governor of Bayelsa State for 8 years, I made this a cardinal program of my Government and it is on record that more women were deliberately brought in through affirmative action, proclaimed and enforced for elective and appointive positions at State and Local Government levels in Bayelsa State.

For example, about 40% of elected councillors in Bayelsa currently are women.

More women were elected and appointed into Government positions in the history of Bayelsa State so far. These women held key government positions and I am happy and proud of the work they did. I am very proud of their capacity, values, dedication and loyalty and I believe they can stand their own anywhere.

I hope this trend continues.

It will take all of us doing this for several years to be able to correct this unfair disadvantage that women suffer.

To all men especially those who belittle our women, in a world that we do not inhabit alone, a world we share with the womenfolk, without whose support, contributions and sacrifices, our species will end, and without whose presence our lives and activities will be miserable, a wise man is he who strives not for the best for himself and the menfolk alone but also the best for the women around him, beginning with his mother, his wife(wives), his daughters and all women he comes in contact with, who indeed strives for the best for all.

It pays when we invest in our women for a safer and more prosperous world.

As a He for She Ambassador, and a father of several beautiful and intelligent daughters, my Queens, as I call them, all of whom I am proud of, and as a brother and friend of so many qualified and decent women across our country, married to husbands from different states in Nigeria, and even outside Nigeria, I consider it my duty, and the duty of every well meaning man and leader to take a public position on this issue, and to, also, galvanize public opinion to stop this endless, meaningless and primitive discrimination against our own daughters, sisters, friends and mothers.

To any man from Bayelsa, or any other state in Nigeria, anywhere else in the future who may want to oppose the appointment of any of my daughters or granddaughters to any position they may be qualified for, I say do so only the basis of superior qualification, competence, capacity, experience and character and may your parents and grandparents also educate you the way I am striving to educate my daughters.

In less than a month, precisely on the 8th of August, it will be two years since my mother, Madam Goldcoast Dickson (Mama Gogo), went to be with the Lord . I once again use this opportunity to thank God for her life and for giving her to me and my siblings. She taught me and all who came her way compassion, respect, care and love.

My entire family and I miss her everyday and will continue to do so for the rest of our lives. May God continue to  grant her soul eternal repose.

This article is dedicated to her memory and Honor, and to the honor of my daughters, women in Nigeria and around the world who are vehicles for change, love, compassion and peace and have come under immense threat in our troubled world.

In conclusion, I commend those who forwarded Mrs Akinkugbe’s name based on her track record; and Mr President who accepted her nomination.

Dickson is the immediate past Governor of Bayelsa State He writes from Toru-Orua, Bayelsa.
