Hashim-Olawepo: “APC’s Recklessness Cause Of Nigeria-US Diplomatic Fallout”

0
Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim

By Akinwale Kasali

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a Peoples Democratic Party Chieftain and a former Presidential Aspirant has said that the Foreign Policy recklessness of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was responsible for the ongoing diplomatic crisis between Nigeria and the United States over alleged Christian Genocide.

He added that it was squarely the alleged inept and corrupt administration of President Bola Tinubu, that has led to the accusation, adding that not the United States of America, USA, President Donald Trump, is also facing mounting pressure from his political base.

The Human Rights Activist and 2009 recipient of the prestigious Lord Max Beloff Prize in Global Affairs from the University of Buckingham, United Kingdom, said the diplomatic standoff reflects the Tinubu government’s “reckless and self serving foreign policy,” which prioritizes personal, political, and pecuniary interests over Nigeria’s national security and global reputation.

Hashim-Olawepo stated, “It is deeply troubling that, as we speak, Nigeria does not have Ambassadors in many key countries. The bi-national and bilateral Commissions established to address pressing concerns on security and trade have collapsed for over a decade”.

Speaking further, he

lamented that after paralyzing institutional mechanisms for diplomacy, the ruling APC government has resorted to using “a motley crowd of poorly informed operatives and international outlaws pushing shady interests incoherently and dangerously.”

He described this as “a Janjaweed foreign policy, which he said was truly disgraceful and embarrassing”.

He also recalled Nigeria’s proud legacy as a stabilizing force in Africa, noting that the country once stood tall as a reliable partner that brought peace to West Africa through ECOMOG and played leading roles in peacekeeping operations in Congo, Darfur, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

“Our current predicament is both tragic and disgraceful,” he lamented.

He faulted attempts to downplay reports of targeted killings, saying such arguments were “fundamentally faulty.”

“Which categories of Nigerians need to die in the staggering numbers we see before we acknowledge the evidence of complicity and failure to protect citizens?” he asked.

He further alleged that grave human rights violations are being committed daily by supporters of the ruling APC while the administration looks away.

He warned that open threats by party loyalists against groups of voters suspected of not supporting Tinubu in 2027 amount to international crimes under the Rome Statute, which Nigeria has domesticated.

“These threats are directed at an ethnic group that predominantly practices one faith,” he said. “Such acts cannot be dismissed as internal affairs when Nigeria is a signatory to many international human rights conventions.”

He however called for an urgent national dialogue to chart a new course for Nigeria’s post-Tinubu national security and foreign policy architecture.

“Genuine patriots must begin consultations to rebuild a framework that ensures peace, stability, and the preservation of Nigeria’s sovereignty.

“If the American initiative has become a catalyst for this necessary national reawakening, then it is a most welcome development.”

“Amb Damagun Is Very, Very Corrupt, A Tax Collector, I Dare Him To Sue Me” – Wike

Nyesom Wike and Ambassador Ilya Umar Damagum

By Adesina Soyooye

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has dismissed the (now) factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ambassador Ilya Umar Damagum as a “very corrupt man, and a complete tax collector.”

Wike made the allegation against Damagum, a former political ally for whom he fought to keep in office during an interview Monday with Channels Television.

“Damagum is a

complete political tax collector, very, very corrupt” Wike  said. He also called Damagum a  betrayer, and asked him to sue for defamation

In an “exchange” with  Seun Okinbaloye, the host of Politics Today, Wike dismissed the PDP as a party riddled with “impunity” and financial impropriety.

When asked why he fought for the elevation of Damagum from an acting position to a substantive, Wike said it was to honor a zoning agreement among PDP governors.

However, Wike turned round to accuse Damagum of alleged betrayal and greed.

Wike: “You see, as a tax collector he will always be.

“He doesn’t need to work with FIRS; complete political tax collector.  “Very, very corrup. Let him go to court and sue me and say, ‘Look, this is what he said about me.’ He knows he cannot.”

The Minister said he has evidence of Damagum’s misconduct, including taking “money in Lagos” and ignoring legal advice on party procedure. He was, however, not specific, and took refuge  by saying:

“We are not a court of law. I know what I’m saying is correct. Nobody can dispute it.”

Natasha’s Int’l Passport Released, Accuses Akpabio Of Frustrating Her Life

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, has been handed back her international passport hours after it was seized by officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS at an undisclosed airport.

The magazine reports that the Senator had protested at the airport on Tuesday after her passport was seized by the officials who did not give a concrete explanation for their action.

Challenging the officials in a viral video cited by the magazine, Senator Natasha said she’s not a flight risk and had committed no crime to warrant the seizure of her passport, saying this is not the first time such treatment had been meted out to her, wondering why her movement in and outside the country is now being restricted.

The Senator was seen in the video demanding an official explanations to the NIS action, threatening to sue the Service if her passport was not released immediately.

The visibly angry senator blamed Senate President Godswill Akpabio for her predicament, lamenting that her life was being frustrated.

“I have committed no offence and there is no order from the court to withhold my passport and deny me travelling. The last time this happened, the officer in charge told us that the Senate President, Godswin Akpabio  instructed them to withhold my passport and prevent me from travelling because he said each time I travel out of the country, I spoil the country’s image by granting interviews out in international media,” she said.

“Please, can you tell them to release my passport and this embarrassment should stop? You have no right to withhold my passport.

“You have no right to deny me exit and entrance into my country. I have not committed any offence and this must stop. No, this must stop.

“As a matter of fact, I think I have to sue you for continuously embarrassing me. No, don’t tell me sorry. Can I please have my passport? You can’t keep doing this to me all the time,” she said.

She explained that he passport has been previously seized, to be released later to her after she sought the help of an influential person in the country.

According to her, “I’ve been standing here for the past 20 minutes. Why are you doing this? What have I committed? The last time it had to take someone influential to call you to release my passport. That was what allowed me travel.

“Now again, you’re withholding my passport while I’m making calls. Is Godswin Akpabio so important? Why is he overruling boundaries? Godswin Akpabio, the Senate President, has instructed the Comptroller General of Customs to deny me exit, to withhold my passport. This is wrong.

“Yes, I know I have two federal government cases against me, of which the president of Nigeria instructed the AGF to cancel the cases, to withdraw the cases.

“This president, Bola Tinubu, actually spoke with Godwin Akpabio to terminate all the cases against me because he admitted, he agreed that they were politically witch-hunting cases. So there is no reason why my passport should be withheld at the international airport.

“There is no reason why. You have no right to do that, madam. You have no right. You are taking laws into your hands. There is no court order. I have not missed any of my court appearances.

“I have attended all my court sessions. I am not a flight risk. I am not a risk to my country. So why are you treating me like a criminal? Can I have my passport, please? Thank you very much. Sometimes I think you just have to be a rebel to get things right. Then you keep asking Nigerians to be good citizens.”

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan returned to the Senate last month after serving six months suspension, due to the clash she had with Akpabio on the floor of the Assembly in March this year.

Northern CAN To FG: Trump’s Military Threat Is An Opportunity To End Killings

0
Archbishop Daniel Okoh on Sunday - CAN President

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in the 19 Northern states has called on Nigerians to allow peace and love to reign in the country in the face of the recent remark by United States President Donald Trump, to the effect that Christians are facing existential threat in the country.

CAN in the region said the US position on alleged genocide against Christians must not be allowed to divide the country, saying Christians and Muslims must close ranks to find solutions to the concerns raised by the US government.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, the Chairman of CAN Rev. John Hayab, while speaking on the issue on Tuesday said the situation calls for retrospection among various religious groups in the country on the need to pursue religious tolerance among themselves.

Last Friday, President Trump designated Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern” after alleging that many Christians were being killed in the country. The US leader also threatened to use military force against Nigeria to stop the allege genocide against Christians.

The federal government has however denied the genocide allegation while the country has remained polarised amid fear that the US president threat could have serious economic and diplomatic consequence for the country.

Rev. Hayab stressed the US position should serve as wake-up call on the federal government to ensure religious freedom in the country rather than pursuing a needless confrontation with the US government.

“Trump’s statement about Christian genocide in Nigeria should be an opportunity for peace-loving Christians and Muslims to unite and demand concrete action by our government to stop the killing of anybody because of religion or any form of identity,” Hayab said.

According to him, a fair reading of Trump’s words reveals concern rather than condemnation, and portrays the voice of an outsider urging Nigerians to uphold peace and unity.

“If you choose to read President Trump’s statement with an open mind, you will simply hear the voice of a visitor who cares about you and wants you to do something serious to enjoy peace and unity in your country,” he added.

Hayab cautioned against individuals or groups who might twist the former U.S. leader’s remarks to fuel division among Nigerians.

“We should disregard those who are manipulating and twisting what was said to instigate us against one another to divide us further.

He said if nothing is done, his military will come after the terrorists, not after Nigerians — or are some of us admitting that they are part of the terrorists?” he asked.

The cleric reiterated that what Nigerians desire is freedom for everyone to practice their faith without fear or discrimination.

“What we want is freedom for all to practice our faith, whether we are Christians, Muslims, or free thinkers,” Hayab said.

Meanwhile, a Muslim group MURIC  on Monday blamed Christians leaders over the diplomatic row between the US and Nigeria, accusing them of betraying President Tinubu who has done much for Christians since he assumed office in 2023.

Men Who Brutalised Woman in Imo

By Charles Igbo

The Imo State Police Command has revealed the identities of six men who pounced  on a woman and brutalized her. The   Command has also mounted a manhunt to arrest them to face the full weight of the law.

The ugly and terrifying incident took place in Umuakalikwu Kindred, Uboegbelu, Azaraubo, Emekuku, an otherwise very civilized community.

The woman identified as Mrs Ndidiamaka Agu, 55, according to the Police was brutalised for assisting the Police in an investigation which the Police did not disclose.

In a hair-raising viral video which outraged not a few indigenes of the community, the six men went to the woman’s home, brought her out, kicked her around, beat her up, and at a point, slammed her on the wall.

The Imo Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has ordered a manhunt to arrest the six men, and bring them to book.

Peter Obi Says Trump’s Position On Nigeria Source Of Concern

0
Peter Obi

“The recent pronouncement by the US government declaring Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ (CPC) and indicating possible military action should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern.

“There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with attendant carnage and the most shocking loss of lives and property.  According to Amnesty International, over 10,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since May 2023 and as I have repeatedly lamented, the unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians is most condemnable, and all efforts must be made to bring it to a stop. It is equally important to state that the terrible situation is significantly avoidable with competent leadership and governance.

“While the insecurity did not start with the present government, what is most unfortunate is the lack and absence of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism and passion on the part of APC APC-led government/leaders to effectively govern, galvanise and lead Nigeria where no one is unwarrantedly oppressed and killed, a Nation where peace, truth and justice reign!

“As democracies, Nigeria and the US have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter. The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and any other plausible engagement by both nations aimed at addressing the prevailing and disturbing security concerns. Both countries must work in concert and expeditiously towards that purpose.”

By Ayodele Oni

The Federal Ministry of Education has announced that 21 states have successfully migrated their basic and secondary school data into the digital National Education Management Information System (NEMIS).

It added that the programme is with the support of UNICEF which gave technical assistance.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, announced this at the opening of 69th National Council on Education (NCE), meeting in Akure, Ondo state capital on Monday.

The five-day meeting brought together education leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders from across Nigeria with the theme  “Quality Education, Data and Professionalisation of Teaching: Tools for Enhanced National Development.”

He urged the remaining states to join the platform, describing accurate data as the foundation for effective planning and sustainable educational policies.

Enitan further emphasized the need for improved teacher support, training, and welfare, noting that resolutions from the council carry national significance in shaping education outcomes.

He said the meeting’s theme aligns with Nigeria’s current education priorities, stressing that quality learning and teacher professionalism are essential to national development.

Declaring the session open, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, described the gathering as both timely and relevant, coming at a period when Nigeria is intensifying efforts to meet global education standards.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the education sector through ongoing reforms.

These include the promotion of digital literacy, provision of technology-based learning tools, payment of WAEC fees for students, recruitment and training of teachers, and payment of bursaries and scholarships to indigent students.

The governor noted that education remains central to Ondo State’s development agenda, adding that his government will continue to invest in initiatives that prepare students for a digital and knowledge-driven world.

Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Prof Igbekele Ajibefun, said the state is fully prepared to lead discussions and contribute meaningfully to the meeting.

He added that the theme captures Nigeria’s shared vision of enhancing education quality through data-driven decision-making and professional teaching standards.

A Director from the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Obianuju, also commended the Ondo State Government and urged participants to generate creative ideas that will strengthen the country’s education framework. She called for stronger collaboration between federal and state actors to drive meaningful progress.

The National Council on Education, Nigeria’s highest policy-making body on education, brings together Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries, Directors, and key stakeholders from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Deliberations at this year’s meeting will focus on data integration, teacher welfare, digital transformation, and inclusive access to learning.

As discussions progress in Akure, expectations remain high that the council will produce actionable resolutions capable of transforming Nigeria’s education system and ensuring every child has access to quality learning, anchoring education as the bedrock of national development.

Sowore Declared Wanted By Lagos Police Command

By Adesina Soyooye

“The CP was ordered by the IGP to shoot me on sight. When his boys failed, he declared me wanted”

For allegedly plotting to instigate public unrest in Lagos, the State Police Command has declared activist Omoyele Sowore wanted.

The Command declared him wanted for planning a protest against the demolition of houses in Oworonshoki, Lagos.

The Command said Sowore planned to

obstruct major roads in the state.

Jimoh Olohundare, the State Commissioner of Police, disclosed this  on Monday while briefing journalists at the Iyana-Oworo section of the Third Mainland Bridge.

Sowore, the leader of  the “Take It Back Movement,” the CP said,  ignored earlier warnings from the Police not to mobilise protests over the recent demolition of houses in the Oworonshoki area.

He said: “We are closing in on Sowore and others involved in coordinating activities intended to disrupt public peace.

“Sowore should surrender at the nearest police station or face arrest wherever he is found.

He warned that anyone who tries  to cause disturbances or block public roads would “face the full weight of the law.”

The Commissioner, said intelligence reports showed  that Sowore and his associates planned to  simultaneously demonstrate at strategic locations such as the Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki Tollgate, and Freedom Park.

He described the alleged plan as “criminal,” and cautioned that it could cause severe traffic disruptions as well as endanger lives.

“It is only someone who needs examination that would attempt to block such a vital route used by thousands daily.”

According to the CP, 13 suspects connected to the planned protest were already under custody while Sowore allegedly fled.

Investigations, he said, are ongoing to uncover the sponsors and collaborators behind the plan.

Jimoh revealed that Police Officers have been deployed along major highways and bridges, where temporary roadblocks and diversions have been mounted.

“The Third Mainland Bridge was not designed to hold stationary weight. Any gathering on it could pose structural risks,” he emphasised.

On the demolished buildings in Lagos, and especially,  Oworonshoki, the CP said that all those affected have been compensated.

“The Government compensated those affected, and the media witnessed it. There is no justification to provoke a crisis under the guise of protest,” he said.

Assuring Lagosians of adequate protection, he said:

“We are not sleeping. We will apprehend, investigate, and prosecute anyone attempting to undermine public safety in Lagos,” Jimoh declared.

But in a swift reaction, Sowore said the CP declared him wanted when his boys failed to shoot him (Sowore),allegedly,on sight on the orders of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun. He, however said he plans to see the CP soon.

He said: “The Lagos Police Commissioner, Moshood Jimoh, has reportedly declared me ‘wanted’ for ‘disturbance of public peace’, allegedly as a result of his officers’ inability to execute a shoot-on-sight  order given by his illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, in Oworonshoki today.

“Despite my repeated attempts to contact Nigeria Police Force Commissioner Jimoh, he has not taken my calls. Nevertheless, I plan to meet with him soon to address his declaration. #RevolutionNow.”

Embattled Labour Party, LP, in Kaduna State has collapsed its structures into the little known Young Progressives Party, YPP.

This happened in Chikun and Kajuru Local Government Areas of Kaduna State.

The collapse which took place in Chikun Local Government Area, involved several LP Executives from Ward to Local Government levels who resigned their membership to formally join the YPP.

Receiving the defectors, the National Organising Secretary of YPP, Williams Moses, alongside the State Chairman, Mikailu Abubakar, described the development as a significant step towards building a credible political alternative in Kaduna State.

Moses stated that the decision of the former LP members was motivated by their commitment to better serve their communities through a platform that promotes accountability, unity, and people-oriented governance.

He urged the residents of the State to see the YPP as a credible vehicle for change and national renewal.

Yerima Ahmed, former LP Chairman in Chikun Local Government who spoke on behalf of the defectors said their defection was voluntary and based on shared values rather than internal crisis.

He said: “Chikun is the centre of politics in Kaduna State.

“Our move to YPP represents a new beginning for both the old and the young.

By Akinwale Kasali

For Lagos socialites and Nigerian party lovers in diaspora, especially in Canada, London and United States, Akinloye Tofowomo, popular as Akiin Shuga is a brand name.

He is one of Nigeria’s finest live performers. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 50 Years.

His death has thrown the nation’s entertainment industry into mourning.

It was gathered the music maestro died on Thursday, October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada.

In a statement  the family described the deceased as a “revered music icon, Grandmaster, and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.”

His family thanked everyone for their prayers and condolences.

“As we come to terms with this immeasurable loss, we ask for quiet reflection and the space to honour his life privately.

The late Akiin Shuga was born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State.

His life could be described as a story of courage and passion.

Struck by polio at the age of five, he rose above his physical limitations to become one of Nigeria’s most celebrated bandleaders and live-music entrepreneurs.

He founded the famous Shuga Band in 1998, starting from Pintos Bar in Ikeja, Lagos.

What began as a small group later grew into a 14-man ensemble of instrumentalists and vocalists that became a fixture at weddings, corporate events, and state occasions.

His company, Shuga Entertainment, became known for professionalism and excellence in live performance.

Akiin Shuga was also the Founder and President of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria, AMBON, where he worked to improve welfare and standards in the live-music sector.

According to a colleague of Akiin Shuga who could not hold back tears on hearing his demise, “Akiin was more than a performer; he was a reformer.

“He brought dignity to a profession that was often misunderstood. He made us see that a live band is not just an accessory for parties, but an important part of our cultural economy.”

Known for his attention to details, Akiin Shuga often reminded his crew, “We don’t perform to impress; we perform to connect.”

Reke Ofano, the Band Leader of the Shuga Band, described him as a perfectionist with a big heart. “Shuga never accepted mediocrity. He pushed everyone to be better, but he also cared deeply. He knew everyone’s story and made us all feel like family,” he said.

Over the years, Shuga Band performed at major social events, state functions, and corporate galas across Nigeria. Despite fame and success, Akiin Shuga remained humble and spiritual. He was known to end every show with a prayer and a promise to “leave joy in the air.”

“He taught us that music is service — to people, to God, and to joy itself,” Ofano said.

“Even in death, he remains our Grandmaster.”

One of his own lyrics says, “Every rhythm tells a story.” His story, filled with courage, melody, and meaning, will live on in the hearts of those he inspired — and in every beat that celebrates the sound of live music in Nigeria.

Tributes have continued to pour in from musicians, fans, and event professionals, who described him as “the architect of modern live-band culture” in Nigeria.

The deceased is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.

The family had however stated that details of his memorial arrangements will be announced later.
