Churches Re-opened

By Ayodele Oni

Regimented Jumat service and Sunday worship for Muslims and Christian faithfuls kicked off in Ekiti state last Friday and, today,  Sunday respectively.

This is part of the measures to relax stringent measures imposed in the wake of the break out of the dreaded global pandemic, Covid 19.

The steps, announced by the State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, allow religious adherents to observe their worship for two hours, 10.00am to noon on Fridays and Sundays, only, for now.

Persons whose ages are below 16 and above 65, are however barred from attending Churches and Mosques, for now, as they are said to be more prone to the pandemic.

The state task force coordinator on Covid 19, Prof Bolaji Aluko, while shedding light on the measures put in place by the Government explained that the Worship Centres are to ensure that people coming in observe all Covid 19 protocols, which include wearing of face masks, provision of hand sanitizers with not more than 50 worshippers at a time.

Also as from Monday, students in JSS three class are to join their counterparts in SSS three who had resumed since last week, to enable them prepare for their terminal examination.

Dr Aluko revealed that members of the task force have been going round to ensure compliance with laid down guidelines, which has led to sanctions for those that run foul.

According to him, some  pharmacy, supermarket and other food institutions, have been sealed for violating various covid 19 guidelines during inspections by the taskforce compliance unit.

He appealed to operators of retail centres and other public places to obey the simple guidelines of usage of infra-red thermometers, functional water sanitizer stands, mask-wearing by all staff and patrons,  and social distancing within the premises.

“These guidelines are for the health and safety of all Ekiti residents. The coronavirus pandemic is still with us,” he added.

Ekiti still remains one of the states that have the least record of Covid 19 patients, with two deaths recorded. Among victims of the pandemic are Governor Kayode Fayemi,  his Commissioners and Aide

Insurgency: Gov. Zulum Given Seven Days To Apologize To President Buhari, Military, Over Accusation |The Source

By Akinwale Kasali

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum has been given Seven days to publicly apologise to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Military for falsely accusing the Military of sabotaging Security in the State.

Zulum had pointedly accused the soldiers of being responsible for the recent attack on his convoy along Baga road, Maiduguri, Borno State Capital. Zulum absolved the sect, and accused the Military of plotting the attack.

But  a group, the North East Peace Assembly, NEPA, is outraged over the allegation. It has given the Governor a seven-day ultimatum to render a public apology to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Military.  Failure to do so, it warns,  means he would be compelled to tell the world about his secret pact with Boko Haram and its sponsors.

This was contained in a statement signed by the group’s leader, Mallam Musa Babangida, on Saturday, following an investigative report which rubbished the governor’s latest allegation that troops had taken over the people’s  farmlands, and disrupted  agricultural activities in the northeast.

In the statement titled, “Gov. Zulum; reclaim your honour by tendering an unreserved apology to Nigerian Army for consistent defamation of character”, the North East Peace Assembly demanded that Zulum do the needful to redeem his already battered image.

It said the governor is fast “carving a niche for himself as an astute fabricator/inventor of sensational fake news” and Nigerians now perceive him as “one of the many covert forces promoting Boko Haram terrorism in Nigeria”.

“The North East Peace Assembly (NEPA) wishes to animate the conscience of Borno state Gov. Babagana Umara Zulum to claim his honour and dignity for unswervingly portraying himself as a leader who regales in peddling blatant lies on the Army. He must do it within seven days of this publication and upon failure, Nigerians should compel him to tell the rest of the world, the secret pact he has signed with Boko Haram and its sponsors,” the statement reads.

“This reminder and even outright request to Gov. Zulum is prodded by the findings and release of the report of an Investigative Team set up by the Army leadership to verify the authenticity of Zulum’s latest allegations that soldiers in the war front have coercively seized farmlands and fishing rivers from locals and converted same for personal farming and fishing activities.

“For the records, let us remind the disco-ordinated Gov. Zulum that the Nigerian Army under the leadership of Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai is too professionalized and disciplined to engage in such acts of subversions and maltreatment of the same people it has devoted years to exculpate from the shackles of Boko Haram terrorism.

“Additionally, like the falsity of the seizure of farm and fishing enclaves; Gov. Zulum’s hasty conclusions that soldiers were behind the Boko Haram attack on his convoy near Baga is the most absurd, illogical or ridiculous reasoning and conclusion by a leader of his status. Gov. Zulum is fast carving a niche for himself as a purveyor of twisted facts and astute fabricator/inventor of sensational fake news.

“Nigerian troops in the battlefield have never engaged in any act of sabotage or complicity in the counter-insurgency operations; inclusive of Zulum’s wretched farming and fishing allegations and the alleged attack on his convoy by  Boko Haram in Borno state. For the umpteenth time, the Special Investigative Panel has exonerated soldiers of any sabotage or complicity as bandied by Gov. Zulum or others before him.”

Beyond mere apology, the group asked the governor to comply and support the fight against insurgency in Borno.

“We strongly believe this is the only alternative at the disposal of Gov. Zulum now and he must bring his head down to comply in the interest of peace. It is only then, Nigerians will know, he is truly committed to the war against insurgency in Borno State.

“However, should Gov. Zulum be obstinate over this plea or fails to tender the apology, it will show clearly that the Governor knows what the rest of Nigerians don’t know about Boko Haram and definitely unhappy that Nigerian troops are in Borno to defend the country.”

Secondus: Buhari Confirms Using Military To Win In 2019 |The Source

Uche Secondus

By Akinwale Kasali

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement that he would have used the Military to undermine the electoral process in the build up to the 2019 General Elections if he desired.

Secondus described the statement as unfortunate, stressing that it was unbecoming of a President who claim to have gotten majority of the votes in 2015 to insinuate compromising the integrity of his re-election in 2019.

He stated that the statement by Buhari gives credence to allegations that his re-election in 2019 was via the military and the undermining of the democratic process.

“Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh. The basic truth known to all Nigerians was that he used the military to retain power. He did not win the presidential election.”

The PDP National Chairman said it was a sad commentary that Buhari could contemplate using security agencies to undermine the electoral process.

“The presence of the military was more than the voters at the polling stations. Never before had military presence been felt at polling stations as was the case in the 2019 presidential election.”

He added that  Nigerians were aware that in the 2019 Presidential election, such despotic and oppressive tactics were deployed to circumvent the electoral process and the wish of the citizens.

“As a party, the PDP hopes this is not a foreplay of what the APC and the Buhari presidency are planning to exert in the Edo and Ondo governorship elections scheduled for September and October 2020, respectively?” he stated.

Secondus also alleged that Nigerians witnessed the overrunning of Ekiti, Osun, Kogi, Bayelsa, and Kano states by APC during elections in those states, using compromised security officials and thugs.

In Kogi State, for instance, he alleged, a police helicopter was used to disperse the electorate, who were on the queue to perform their civic duties on Election Day. He also recalled that Mrs. Salome Abuh, a frontline PDP woman leader, was burnt to death by members of APC in the Kogi State election and till date, no member of the president’s party had been interrogated or arraigned for her murder.

Secondus said Nigerians had never witnessed the level of electoral impunity seen under the Buhari administration.

But the PDP chairman said the president must advise his party to allow INEC to carry out its responsibilities without interference in Edo and Ondo states.

Insecurity: Group Writes President Buhari, Claims Nigerians In Diaspora Are Scared Of Returning To The Country |The Source

Muhammadu Buhari

By Akinwale Kasali

The Southern Nigeria, Middle Belt and Northern Minorities Forum, SNMBF, has call on President Muhammadu Buhari to be proactive and provide  adequate security for Nigerians, especially in Southern  Kaduna and the North East where Boko Insurgents and alleged Fulani settlers and Herdsmen have been terrorizing.

The Group alleged President Buhari’s kinsmen, the Fulani Ethnic Group are largely responsible for the violence and killings in some parts of the country, most especially in Southern Kaduna.

In a letter addressed to the President, the Group  said that in the post COVID-19 era,  Nigeria may face downturn in the number of her citizens living abroad returning to their homeland.

The letter submitted to President Buhari was signed by the Group’s President, Sidney Imohbio, based in New York, United States of America.

Early in August the group had submitted a petition to the United Nations, (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guetters asking the world body tp appoint a Special Rappateur on Nigeria.

The Group blamed the President for pampering his ethnic nationality group, the Fulani and attempting to place them above other ethnic groups in Nigeria through his  political and economic policies.

It noted that while millions of Nigerians are not ready to return home even for holiday, millions at home are desperate to leave the country due to insecurity and economic downturn.

“The glory of our country is being pulled down by you. Nigerians abroad are not willing to return home and those at home are chocked, desperate to leave the country and prefer to relocate abroad through the dangerous Atlantic Ocean even if it means being eaten by Sharks. Investors are leaving the country and new ones are scared of the emerging state of blood” the group said.

The Group said millions of Nigerians abroad are now scared to come back to their homeland due to violence, corruption and general insecurity in many parts of the country.

The group said some Nigerians living abroad who came home have either been kidnapped or killed by bandits. SMBNNF said the recent reports of extremist groups planning to invade Southern Nigeria have further heightened the prospect of Nigeria becoming a failed state unless drastic efforts are taking to stem the tide.

“Millions of Nigerians will not come home again. We are returning to 1993 when the country was ruled by fear, violence and trembling. With the mass killings, adductions and murder without respite, Nigerians abroad are not willing to come back home to help build their fatherland”, the group said.

The group told Buhari that though his government placed emphasis on fighting insecurity as a campaign slogan but that in recent times, the country has assumed a violent territory where human lives are like cockroaches on the sidewalk.

The group said “Everywhere abroad, from Asia to America and Europe, the question we are asked is why is Nigeria such a violent country. Though we fought a civil war, we never had history of violent terrorism. Today, people are slaughtered daily in Nigeria. No Nigerian abroad is anxious to come back home because of the killings”

According to the group, Nigeria is assuming the status of a terrorist country similar to Afghanistan. “Nobody wants to go to Kabul. If you do not change the ways things are in Nigeria, very soon, nobody would wish to come to Abuja”, the group said.

Sidney, a lawyer, said to end violence in the country, the Federal and State Government should take decisive actions which includes the mopping up illegal weapons said to be in millions in the country and restructuring of the country to reflect its plural nature.

The group said the proliferation of arms in the hands of non state actors pose a great threat to the stability of the country.

The group said “We the members of Southern Nigeria, Middle Belt, and Northern Minorities Forum resolved and state that Nigeria will be greater if it remains  indivisible and indissoluble,

but very negotiable. We must be focused, steadfast, and resolute not to be deceived, or fooled in this 21st century. Nigeria is a beautiful country with beautiful people.

The group said the problems in Nigeria are from the leadership.

“We allowed just a few handful wicked, greedy, and selfish people to subjugate, oppress and maltreat us like second class citizens or idiots. The South South, South East, South West, Middle Belt and Northern Minorities should wake up from their slumber.”

The group blames the recurrent violence on a section of the armed Fulani people working hard to conquer the country.

The group said “North of West Africa to Sokoto and labeled Hausa leaders as corrupt leaders. With the help of the indigenous Hausa traitors he conquered their leaders. This was in 1800s more than 200 years ago. How can we allow the same thing to happen to us again in the same country, and in the 21st-century? What would be our excuse? The Hausa state has never known peace since the conquest by Fulani. I am quite sure we don’t want that. Let us come together and restructure Nigeria without fear of being killed now or we will all perish in the hands of Fulani.”

The group told Buhari that his co-political travelers came into power in 2015 because the Nigerian electorates believed the party’s slogan.

“The purported  purview of the slogan was to address four cardinal points in the manifesto of APC: 1) Security, 2) corruption, 3) poverty and 4) unemployment. Of the four,  corruption and security situation were regarded as serious matters and therefore needed immediate attention. You promised that corruption and insecurity would be a thing of the past if he was voted for. After five years,  we are yet to see how the FG plans to tackle corruption. In fact, the situation has since deteriorated. Corruption has now become a problematic monster seed whose taproot is very difficult to uproot. It is now endemic in the daily affairs of almost all Nigerians.”

The group said Buhari has failed to tackle corruption without bias. “We would want to encourage and suggest that it should be a wholistic address without fear or favor. There should be  no sacred cows  whether dead or alive. It may be pertinent to remind our President that claims against corruption have no statute of limitation, restrictions or respects for anyone who contravened the law-EFCC vs Sami Abacha. Corruption has many faces: a) tribalism, b) Sectionalism, c) Bribery, d)nepotism,e)favoritism, f) ethnocentrism, g)pervasion of justice, h) refusal to render account, i) stealing, and j) rigging of elections are all corruption. Then who is not corrupt in Nigeria”

The group said further “The stylish and restricted definition given to corruption in Nigeria is deceitful, dubious,  misleading and unacceptable. The definition of corruption should not be made for a section of the public. Let the head and all the leaders of government first lead by good examples before they are qualified  to label others as corrupt people. It is an aberration to make scape goat of people perceived as opposition”

It said in a democratic society,no  one arm of government should play god and perform the functions of the three arms as is practiced in Nigeria. The president is all in one. Hence he can decide who is or not corrupt. He can hire and fire.

Indian Police Arrest Nigerian Who Claimed Biafran Nationality |The Source

Man Arrested

By Chidi Onyewuchi

An unnamed Nigerian, in India, has been arrested by the Indian Police, and taken into custody, for claiming Biafran Nationality.

When he was accosted by the Police, along with another Nigerian, an alleged drug runner, he told the Police he was a  Biafran citizen.

The Times of India reported that the arrest took place in Gao,  In India’s South-western coast.

Even though no drugs were found on him, as was found on the the other Nigerian, he was arrested because he could not support his claim of being a Biafran citizen.

When the Police asked him to produce documents to support his claim, he could not because he had neither passport nor anything to identify himself. He was immediately taken into custody for entering, and staying in India without documents.

The other Nigerian was nabbed for  carrying 510kg of Indian Hemp, and 8.2kg of suspected cocaine.

It could not be confirmed what fate awaits the ‘Biafran’, as he must have travelled with a Nigerian passport.

Speculation is that if he still has his Nigerian passport, and other valid papers, his case may not be taken seriously. He may be charged for Just lying to the Police.

Kano Death Sentence: British Party Wants Nigeria Punished |The Source

0
Yahaya Sharif-Aminu

The death sentence passed on a Nigerian singer from Kano State, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, could earn Nigeria a punishment from Britain.

A political party, the United Kingdom Independent Party,  UKIP, a well known Eurosceptic right wing populist party, has asked the British Government to cut off all aids to Nigeria, including humanitarian aids, unless the death sentence is lifted.

The Singer was sentenced to death, by hanging, on August 10, for an alleged blasphemy against the Holy Prophet Mohammed, in a song he posted on WhatsApp.

An Upper Sharia Court in Kano, sentenced the 22 year-old after he pleaded guilty.

The death sentence on him is a double tragedy for his family. Before his arrest and sentence, a group of youths had razed down his family house, and rendered everybody homeless.

The death sentence on him has caused an outrage within and outside Nigeria, but with commendation by some Islamic groups and individuals.

The sentence is subject to appeal within 30 days.

Shekau, the Boko Haram Leader, condemned those who sentenced the singer to death, dismissing them as infidels. He said they were as guilty as  the person they sentenced to death. True Muslims, he chided them, do not give time for trial, or appeal, in such cases, the person is immediately “slaughtered”

But UKIP is asking the British Government to stop all kinds of assistance to Nigeria, as a kind of pressure.

In a statement it released, the Party said:

“Nigeria, a major  recipient of UK aid, sentences young man to death for a trivial offence. United kingdom’s tax payers, via the Department for International Development, (DFID),  are major contributors of aids and investments to Nigeria, totalling well over £200m annually. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country, and second largest economy.

“UKIP hopes that Her Majesty’s Government would use whatever influence it can muster,  to have Mr Sheriff    released. In doing so, our government must not hesitate to openly use the vast amount of ill-afforded, tax payers’ money which is poured into Nigeria as a lever to  encourage the Ngerians to act honourably.

“Nigeria and many other African countries may be profitable trade partners for the UK, but this does not excuse us conniving with state-let assaults on  human rights among these partners.”

It expressed shock that a Nigerian Sharia Court in the city of Kano would sentence a 22-year old to death “for what, in any civilised country, would not even be considered an offence.”

Recall that one of the reasons World powers are not selling arms to Nigeria, is alleged human rights abuses. A couple of days ago, the Nigerian Government cried out on that, through Minister for Information, Lai Muhammed.

One of  those abuses is the type of death sentence passed on Sharif-Aminu.

Meanwhile,  a Pan-African CSOs, and a number of other Civil Society Groups, have asked that the singer be released immediately.

He has been in solitary confinement since the sentence was passed on him.

Neither the Kano  State Government, not the Federal Government, has said a word on the case.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who described late Razak’s death as a rude shock, said the deceased was a great politician, a strong party man and an advocate of masses oriented programmes.

Chief Razak, the Balogun of Epe, died at the high brow Reddington Hospital, Lagos after a brief illness.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a condolence message, issued by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr Gboyega Akosile, said the deceased, during his lifetime, stood for what was right, always championing policies that would impact positively on the lives of the poor masses.

Sanwo-Olu added that the late Razak, popularly called KLM, did not hide his love and support of his administration especially the Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S. agenda.

He said: “I am saddened by the death of one of our political leaders in Lagos APC, Chief Lanre Razak. He was a loyal party man and committed democrat, with a deep understanding of the state’s political landscape. He was an extremely loyal politician, who did his best for our party, the All Progressives Congress.

“Chief Razak served his people and Lagos State passionately as Chairman of Epe Local Government Area and Commissioner of Public Transportation.
