EndSARS Portest at Lekki

By Charles Igbo

Shootings  reportedly went on at the Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos, the headquarters of the #EndSARS protesters, this evening.

Audio and video recordings from the scene indicate that heavy shootings were going-on, and a number of the protesters were shouting    “sit down, sit down. They are shooting at us. Four people have been killed. No problem. No problem. Shoot us, shoot us.”

As they were saying those, one of them was waving a large Nigerian flag.

It is not known who were shooting, but  the Lagos State Government on Tuesday, imposed a-24 hour curfew in the state over the bloody violence. Schools had earlier been closed.

At least, two headquarters of two Police Divisions in Lagos were attacked and burnt down. A Local Government Headquarters was also attacked and vandalised, and fatalities were recorded.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP,  Mohammed Adamu, in response to the violence, has deployed the Anti-Riot Policemen to maintain peace in Lagos and other states.

#EndSARS Group Condemns Violence, Says Plan Not To Overthrow Govt. |The Source

Lagos EndSARS Protesters

By Akinwale Kasali

The #EndSARs Movement in its maiden statement on Tuesday, strongly, condemned the killings and murder of its members and other innocent Nigerians across the country.

The Movement said its agenda is not to overthrow the Government, but to deepen the democratic culture that ought to derive its powers from the wish of the people, and to draw Government attention to the horrendous crimes committed daily against Nigerians.

It said it was compelled to speak out in the face of a  conscious plot to demonise the group through violence, jail break and killings introduced by the enemies of the protests.

The group said it stands for millions of Nigerians with “good conscience” who are troubled by police brutality as a direct consequence of corruption, incompetence at all levels, economic exclusion and poverty of ideas on the part of those managing Nigerian political economy.

“We are a non-violent movement that draws its strength from history. Our energy is derived from the long-time suffering, deprivations and repression  Nigerians have had to endure for generations. Our wisdom is sourced from the heroic struggle of our forebears, those who have laid down their lives so that a better future is guaranteed for the toiling mass of our people. We derive our resilience from the brulality we have suffered in the hands of those we pay to protect us but who have suddenly turned their guns to us; they rape our wives, kill children and turn Nigeria into a hell meant only for those anxious to live in misery and die in penury” the statement signed by its three officials, Mallam Yisa Aliu, Bolaji Falayi and Chuks Egbe stated

The Movement said the overwhelming goodwill it has received from the International Community, including Leaders of great democratic  nations, shows that the protesters are not alone and, in fact enjoy the unprecedented support of the global community that has watched how Nigeria continue to dance shamefully in the mud.

The group said the violent response of the State has led to the death of tens of peaceful protesters whose only offense was to express themselves against a horrific system that leads to the strangulation of many Nigerians.

“We oppose a system that sustains itself by the blood of Nigerians. We oppose a system that treats Nigerians as footnotes. We oppose a system that kill us before we can grow and a system that turn Nigerians to the laughing stock of local and international communities” the Movement said.

According to the officials, the protest has shown clearly the preparedness of millions of Nigerians to free themselves from the fetters of iron.

“We ask for police reforms,we ask that they should stop shedding the blood of Nigerians, we ask that they should put and end to rape of young people, rape of our mothers, we ask that they should lead young people with decent examples, we ask they should protect us from the heat of the sun, we ask they should allow us to speak against what leads to the deaths of our people, they responded with bullets and armoured vans.”the group said.

The #ENDSARS movement said the protests have been peaceful but that violence was brought in by the Government when it sponsored armed thugs to attack the protesters.

The Movement also commiserated with the families of protesters who lost their lives and those whose properties were burnt in Abuja and other parts of the country.

“Our protests have been peaceful. Violence was introduced by the government. This provocation will not spur our members to counter violence. We shall continue to be peaceful in line with universal principles of democracy.”

It regretted that “the series of attacks both by sponsored thugs and security agencies causing injuries, loss of lives and properties are linked to those who claim to be representing the people.”

It will be recalled that in the past thirteen days, there has been a nationwide protest by Nigerians to press government to put an end to impunity of the defunct police anti-robbery unit, Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS and other unpopular government policies with hashtag #EndSars.

Demonstrators were attacked in Lagos, Osogbo, Ado Ekiti, Abuja and other places by both thugs believed to be sponsored and security agents. These prompted volunteer civil unarmed guards to offer protection where possible. There have also been volunteers in the area of free legal services, medical and other critical teams to sustain the daily protests.

The Movement said despite the fact that the protests are well-organised and orderly to the knowledge of both local and international keen observers, it is worried that what is playing out of late is state sponsored violence which increased the tempo of the Movement’s skepticisms of government’s real intention.

“These protests have been without  any incidence of violence or crime, personal effects were lost, announced, found and returned to the owners. It’s a protest where people observing religious activities were honoured, ambulances and many other facilities  provided by volunteers and services provided either by the people themselves or by sympathisers.

“The government has introduced violence. They want people to believe the protesters are violent to the extent of organising a jail break, burning police stations and so on”

The group said “We are not unaware about the sponsored attacks on us and our properties, nor are we unaware that the numerous criminal acts being committed are  tactical plots deployed to discredit the protests and justify the military deployment against the unarmed protesters.  We make bold to say we shall not retaliate against any Nigerian or security agent, and that we are resolute to see this agitation to its logical conclusion come what may. We also use this medium to tell the public that it is not an insurrection or a plot to change the government of the day, neither is the Movement involved in any jail break, burning of any police station but rather a worthy sacrifice whose time has come to birth a better Nigeria for all”

Fayemi Imposes 24-Hour Curfew On Ekiti |The Source

By Ayodele Oni

The Government of Ekiti State has imposed a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the state effective from 10pm, Tuesday.

A statement by the secretary to the State Government, Biodun Oyebanji, pointed out that Government’s action followed the hijack of the #EndSARS peaceful protests by hoodlums who embarked on harassing innocent citizens on their lawful duties.

The statement reads:

“Government observed with growing concern how the #EndSARS protest, which started as a peaceful protest against police brutality by youths in Ekiti State, has been hijacked by some hoodlums.

“The hoodlums have capitalised on the #EndSARS protest to rape, assault, rob and extort innocent citizens across the State. These are in addition to the wanton destruction of properties, particularly private properties.

“Government is concerned that if this state of affairs is allowed to continue unabated, it will lead to a breakdown of law and order thereby threatening the wellbeing of the people of Ekiti State.

“For the purpose of clarity, Government continues to show understanding and responsiveness to the demands of the legitimate protesters.

“On 16th October 2020, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, Governor, Ekiti State met with the protesters in person. While identifying with the legitimacy of their protests, he assured them that the State Government will immediately put measures in place to respond to all their demands.

“Government has since then constituted a Human Rights Investigation Panel to review all cases of abuse by Officers of the disbanded SARS. In addition, Government has enabled a Victims Compensation Fund to facilitate speedy remedial measures for victims of such abuse.

“Furthermore, several officials of Government have engaged the protesters at multiple fora and platforms including the social media in order to ensure that concerns of protesters are properly identified and responded to in a prompt and efficient manner with necessary feedback.

“Government had also at various times drawn the attention of the protesters to the troubling hijack of the protests by individuals whose only interest is to inflict violence on the people of the state.

“In the past 48 hours, there have been incidents of gang-rape, robberies, physical assaults on innocent people, looting and burning of a police station. These acts of brigandage are not in consonance with the legitimate aspirations of the protesters. It cannot be logical to seek to remedy impunity with impunity.

“Government therefore cannot afford to watch a deliberate enthronement of anarchy by some bad elements who have hijacked the protest for some clandestine reasons.

“Consequently, the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, hereby imposes a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the State starting from 10.00 pm tonight, Tuesday, October, 20, 2020.

“Only essential workers and service providers with valid means of identifications are allowed to move around during the period of the curfew.

“Any person found on the street that does not belong to this category, would be promptly arrested and prosecuted according to the laws of Ekiti State.

“We seek the understanding of the good people of Ekiti State as we continue to take deliberate steps towards ensuring that peace and normalcy return to our state.”

Ekiti joins Edo, and Lagos in imposing a 24-hour curfew in the state.

There Is No Plan To Forge Agboola Ajayi’s Signature |The Source

Donald Ojogo

By Ayodele Oni

The Ondo State Government has reacted to allegations that it plans to forge the signature of the embattled and redundant Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi.

There have been reports that a resignation letter that would be purported to have been signed by Ajayi would be issued to make it look as if he has finally resigned from office.

Ajayi resigned from the APC without resigning from his office as the Deputy Governor of the state. That has put him under moral pressure, asking him to quit office. So far, he has refused, insisting his tenure officially ends in 2021.

But reacting to the alleged plan to forge his signature by the Government, the Commissioner for Information, Donald Ojogo, said:

“Ordinarily, it should be the height of insensitivity to dissipate energy on whatever the ZLP candidate may have said in respect of the above subject matter.

“Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, will rather deepen efforts as regards the current National Concern of youths protests.

“All the same, one does not expect anything less from a thoroughly beaten and politically minimized egocentric being. The circumstances feeding his outburst are clearly understood.

“Defeated hopes, dashed expectations and fast-lane victims are very potent kickers and shadow boxers. One rather expects a ruptured false package to have a sober reflection in order to forge ahead than engage in further perdition.

“This is not the first time he would unveil untruths, not only about others, but about himself too. Forgery cannot, and has never been part of this Government.

“The signature of anyone is too insignificant to be forged. It’s not in the character of Mr Governor or anyone in the Government he heads. It is left for Agboola Ajayi to place his conscience before the Moral  Square as far as the claim about his position as deputy governor is concerned.

“Those whose identities are shrouded in such vices as forgery, perjury and made-up inadequacies are already some distance away from the Government led by Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN. They know themselves.”

In the past one week, the rumours have been strong that Ajayi would, finally, resign from office.  He has denied any such resignation thoughts.

One of Nigeria’s domestic airlines, Arik Air, has cancelled all of its flights against Wednesday.

The Airline in a release signed by its Duty Manager/OCC, Daniel Mlaha, said the cancellation is due to the 24 hour curfew imposed on Lagos State by the Lagos State Governor.

The Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had, mid-day, Tuesday, imposed a 24-hour curfew on the state, beginning from 4.00pm, due to the violence which suddenly accompanied the #EndSARS protests.

On Tuesday,  hoodlums taking advantage of the protests, burnt down two Police Divisions in Lagos, and a Local Government Areas in Lagos. The state Government had, earlier, shut-down all schools in the state.

But on Tuesday, it worsened, prompting a shut-down of the State.

Cancelling all flights against Wednesday, Arik said: “Please, be advised that due 24 hours curfew in LOS, all flight operations for tomorrow Wednesday, 21st Oct. 2020, have been cancelled.

“NOTE: The information provided above is for guideline only and subject to change at short notice given operational/commercial circumstances.”

Orile Iganmu Police state sets ablaze

By Akinwale Kasali

Lagos was on fire Tuesday when hoodlums, under the guise of the #EndSARS protest, set ablaze two Police Divisions, Orile/Iganmu and Layeni.

Layeni is in the Ifelodun LGA.

In another part of Lagos, hoodlums, also, set on fire buildings inside the Ajeromu  Local Government Area.

The hoodlums who stormed the Police Division, Orile,  setting it on fire, also went on a killing spree, injuring Police Officers on duty.

The attackers, the magazine gathered, were not part of the #EndSARS campaign protesters, who had been protesting peacefully for days,  against Police brutalisation, extra judicial killings and abuse meted on the citizens.

The Hoodlums in their hundreds stormed the Police Station, brandishing dangerous weapons like cutlasses, bottles, clubs, matchetes and other dangerous weapons, chasing Police Officers on duty before setting the station ablaze.

As at the time of filing  this report, the magazine gathered that the reason for the action of the hoodlums was that the Police had, allegedly, shot at somebody, leading to the death of the young man.  The attack was a reprisal attack on the Police Station from hoodlums, was what played out,  eyewitnesses at the scene informed.

Videos of the incident and the jungle Justice meted on one of the Police Officer has gone viral.

The hoodlums had mobbed the Police Officer, hitting him with different dangerous weapons until he became lifeless.

The Chief Press Secretary at the Ajeromi LGA,  Sheriff  Fakunle, who confirmed the attack said thugs invaded the LGA Secretariat, looted  destroyed properties worth millions of Naira, and burnt vehicles.

Meanwhile, in obedience to the 24 hour  curfew imposed by the State Government, the Police has banned all forms of protests in the state.

Speaker Gbajabiamila Threatens National Budget; Calls Protesters “Architects Of National Rebirth” |The Source

By Gideon Njoku

Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has hailed the #EndSARS protesters as the architects of Nigeria’s national rebirth.

The Speaker said this Tuesday on the  floor of the House of Assembly.

He also threatened not to sign the 2021 Appropriation Bill which is before the House over two reasons:

* If it does not make provisions for the compensation of families of victims of Police brutalities in the last decade.

*If the agreement between the Academic Staff of Union of Universities and the Federal Government is not captured.

The Speaker was apparently responding to the sorry  State of the Nation which, in the past two weeks, almost, pushed thousands of Youths to the streets in an unprecedented protest.

The Youths had started their protest asking for an end to the atrocities meted out on the people and, especially, Youths by the Special Armed Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.

Apparently, Gbajabiamila also thinks that the long strike by ASUU,  which has kept Nigerian University students out of school, contributed to the anger of the Youths.

The Appropriation Bill, when passed by NASS, is usually signed by both the Senate President and the Speaker, before it is transmitted to the President.

Both, at once, appeasing and appealing to the the protesting youths, he asked them to go home, saying the protest has been hijacked by  hoodlums and miscreants, but hailed the youths as the “Architects of National Rebirth”.

“Your voice has been heard from Abuja to Washington to  the UK, now is the time for you to leave the streets, and get to the round table.”

The Speaker’s stand will likely uplift the spirit of the youths and ASUU. It now depends on how it finally works out.”

Breaking: Lagos Protesters Say They Would Defy Curfew |The Source

Lagos EndSARS Protesters

By Adesina Soyooye

The #EndSARS protesters in Lagos say they would defy the Lagos State Government’s Curfew imposition. They insist on continuing with the #EndSARS protests which have been on, nationwide, for 12 days.

The youths  blocked all roads and grounded Lagos, causing the Government to shut down schools on Monday.

The peaceful protests in Lagos had degenerated to violence, and hijacked by all sorts, including hoodlums.

They resorted to looting, killings and extortion of the people, deviating from what protesters had planned.

The Protesters did not help issues as their demands increased by the day.

On Tuesday, the roadblocks increased, and the violence intensified.

In the afternoon of Tuesday, in response, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu imposed a 24-hour curfew, beginning from 4.00pm to avoid more deaths and destruction of properties.

But the Protesters say they are not moved by the curfew, insisting they would stay put on the streets.

One of them who spoke to Channels Television, said the Government was not serious if they expected them to disperse, just like that.

He said;” The curfew will meet us here. We are going nowhere. We will stay put, and continue with our demands.”

It is not known what action the Government would take if the protesters insist on defying the curfew.
