Atiku: ADC On A Rescue Mission; I Will Not Step Aside

Former vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the African Democratic Congress, ADC, is on a rescue mission to deliver the country from the mismanagement of the APC-led government, saying no amount of intrigues and intimidation can stop it.

The former number two citizen of the country, who is also an aspirant under the ADC said all efforts by the administration to make the country a one party state will also fail, adding that some forces aligned with the administration were out to destabilise the party.

According to him, one of such undue interference in the affairs of the ADC by some forces allegedly working for the current government, is to try to influence  who becomes the presidential candidate of the ADC in 2027, noting that the ruling party is out to cripple the ADC which many Nigerians are looking up to “as the nucleus of a credible national alternative.”

Abubakar made the remark in a statement issued by his media aide, Paul Ibe on Tuesday, accusing the administration of Bola Tinubu of executing policies capable of ‘shrinking democratic” space in the country.

The former PDP presidential candidate also said all effort targeted to make him step aside from contesting the ADC ticket will amount to nothing, saying rather the Tinubu administration ought to “step aside” for mismanaging the country, adding that the ADC has an internal mechanism to chose those who emerge as its candidates in the next election, warning interlopers to leave the party alone.

Part of the statement: “Let it be stated plainly: the ADC is on a national rescue mission. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside other committed patriots, is central to this effort. Any call—overt or covert—for Atiku to “step aside” is a gift to authoritarian ambition and a betrayal of the Nigerian people.

“The ADC has consistently affirmed its commitment to an open, transparent, and competitive process for selecting its flagbearer. APC proxies and external meddlers have no standing to intimidate, blackmail, or sabotage this democratic resolve.

“At present, the ADC is focused on building strong ward, local government, and state structures nationwide. Disruptors and infiltrators must allow the party to do this essential work without interference.

“The party remains open and welcoming to all genuine opposition figures. This inclusiveness—not coercion—is the soul of democracy.

“When the time comes, all qualified aspirants will present themselves freely. No one is stepping down. If anyone should step aside, it is President Tinubu—whose leadership has become a national liability.

“The recent public declaration of ADC membership by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in Enugu, the political heartbeat of the Southeast, triggered open boasts by a serving minister and presidential aides about plans to undermine the party. Their fear is evident.

“Let there be no ambiguity: the ADC is determined to end the misfortune imposed by the Tinubu-led APC. No amount of intimidation, intrigue, or sabotage will derail this rescue mission,” Abubakar noted.

India Overtakes Japan as Fourth-Largest Economy; Obi Raises Alarm Over Nigeria’s Decline

The former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has reacted to the announcement that India has overtaken Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy by nominal GDP, using the milestone to question Nigeria’s worsening economic fortunes.

According to estimates by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for 2025, India’s nominal GDP is projected at about $4.187 trillion, narrowly surpassing Japan’s $4.186 trillion. India is now setting its sights on overtaking Germany, whose economy stands at approximately $4.74 trillion, to become the world’s third-largest economy.

While describing India’s progress as remarkable, Obi said the development underscores Nigeria’s failure to translate its resources into sustainable economic growth, especially when viewed against the two countries’ comparable trajectories in the past.

Citing World Bank data, Obi noted that at the end of 2007, during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s nominal GDP per capita stood at about $1,816, significantly higher than India’s $1,022. By 2015, at the end of the Yar’Adua/Jonathan era, Nigeria still maintained an advantage, with GDP per capita of around $2,586, compared to India’s $1,584.

However, IMF World Economic Outlook projections show a dramatic reversal by 2025. India’s nominal GDP per capita is expected to rise to about $2,878, while Nigeria’s is projected to fall sharply to around $807.

Obi described the figures as troubling, particularly in light of what he said were significant subsidy savings, substantial revenue growth, and unprecedented levels of borrowing. He disclosed that Nigeria’s combined revenue between 2023 and 2025 is estimated at about ₦200 trillion (approximately $135 billion), yet critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and poverty reduction have seen no meaningful improvement.

According to him, poverty, insecurity, and the collapse of public services have worsened, while businesses—especially small and medium enterprises—are shutting down daily due to lack of support and high operating costs. He also lamented erratic and expensive electricity, alongside the rising cost of rent, transportation, and food, which he said are increasingly beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians.

Obi renewed his call for national unity and a new leadership consensus built on competence, compassion, and character. He stressed the need for a government that prioritizes citizens’ welfare, invests in healthcare, education, infrastructure, agriculture, and technology, and cuts waste while reducing the cost of governance.

He further emphasized transparency and accountability, saying Nigerians must be able to track national progress and hold public officials responsible. Such an approach, he argued, would empower citizens economically, create jobs, support businesses, strengthen security, ensure reliable energy and food security, and restore trust in public institutions.

Obi concluded that only through collective action, transparent governance, and visionary leadership can Nigeria close the widening gap with countries like India and reclaim its economic potential, warning that other nations are already moving ahead and that the time for Nigeria to act is now.

Peter Obi Recounts Disturbing Hospital Experience Shared by US-Based Nurse, Laments Nigeria’s Healthcare System

Former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, on Tuesday shared a personal encounter that highlighted what he described as the deep failures in Nigeria’s healthcare system, saying the country is not poor but poorly governed.

Obi, in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, recounted a conversation he had with a young Nigerian-American nurse during a domestic flight from Owerri to Lagos.

According to him, the encounter occurred on January 4, 2026, after he had attended events in Ughelli, Delta State, and Mgbidi, Imo State. While onboard an Air Peace flight, Obi said he sat beside a 24-year-old nursing school graduate, Chidera Ugwokeba, who was visiting Nigeria for the first time with her parents.

Obi said the young nurse expressed sadness and confusion over the state of basic public services in Nigeria, particularly healthcare. She narrated an incident involving her sister, who sustained a domestic injury and was rushed to what was described as the best government-owned hospital in the area.

Despite the urgency of the situation and visible bleeding, Obi said hospital staff allegedly refused to attend to the patient until payment was made. The family was reportedly shown other patients in critical conditions who were also left unattended due to inability to pay.

After payment was eventually made, the nurse further discovered that the hospital had only one blood-testing machine for all patients, which she said was not sterilised between uses. Obi added that when concerns were raised, hospital staff allegedly warned the family to stop asking questions if they wanted treatment to continue. Despite having paid, the family was still required to purchase all items needed for care.

Obi noted that the nurse said such practices contradicted her training and experience abroad, where treatment precedes payment. She also reportedly disclosed that while her family had considered raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign to support healthcare in Nigeria, relatives discouraged the idea over fears of mismanagement and corruption.

The former Anambra State governor said the conversation took a more emotional turn when the nurse referenced the recent death of boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, popularly known as “Success,” suggesting the absence of functional ambulances could explain why he was not rushed to a nearby hospital in time.

“She wondered whether Nigeria was simply a poor country,” Obi said, adding that the nurse nonetheless expressed willingness to offer her services free of charge and help raise funds to improve the system.

Responding to her concerns, Obi said he assured her that Nigeria has sufficient resources but lacks competent and compassionate leadership. He argued that misplaced priorities, rather than poverty, are responsible for the collapse of critical services.

To support his argument, Obi cited figures showing that a standard ambulance costs about ₦150 million. He said the ₦60 billion spent on refurbishing the National Conference Centre and rebuilding the Vice President’s residence could have provided about 400 ambulances nationwide. He also stated that the ₦300 billion reportedly spent on an additional presidential jet could have built over 4,000 primary healthcare centres across the country.

Obi concluded by calling for national unity across ethnic, religious, and political lines to demand leadership marked by competence, capacity, compassion, and transparency.

For breaching executive order 001/2023 which banned illegal mining in Oyo state, Government has suspended the Sobaloju of Ofiki, Chief Jacob Sobaloju, for allegedly siding illegal mining in his domain.

The state government said the action was taken to protect the public interest and preserve government-gazetted assets.

In a suspension letter issued by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters and signed by the Director of Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Olajire A.M., the traditional ruler was accused of contravening the executive order and forest reserve regulations by allegedly issuing consent letters to mining firms without lawful authorisation.

The letter further alleged that Chief Sobaloju permitted mining activities within government-reserved forest areas and facilitated unauthorised mining operations, actions said to be in violation of extant laws and regulations.

According to the ministry, the monarch was suspended from the palace of the Onitọ of Ito with effect from Monday, January 5, 2026, pending the outcome of investigations.

The suspension was described as a precautionary step to ensure an unhindered and credible investigation process.

Chief Sobaloju was also directed to immediately cease all mining-related activities, including the issuance of consent letters, avoid interference with the investigation, and make himself available to investigators whenever required.

Abe made the remarks in a Facebook post while reacting to the appointment.

“My truthful answer then was that my love and support for  President Tinubu was not just based on my expectations of reward, but on my conviction that the President will do things differently from every other leader, and Nigeria will be better, and the numbers will show that Nigeria is better.

“Today the President is doing things differently and the numbers are beginning to show that Nigeria is on the right course.

Ekiti Gov Election: Protest Over Removal Of PDP Candidate From Provisional List Of Cleared Candidates

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti State Inter Party Advisory Council, (IPAC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of colluding with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remove the name of the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) Dr Wole Oluyede from among candidates cleared for June Election in the state.

The Chairman, IPAC in Ekiti State, Daramola Owoola declared that without the candidate of the PDP, Dr Wole Oluyede in the ballot paper, there will no election in the state.

Owoola made the declaration on Tuesday, at the Independent National Electoral Commission office, New Iyin road, Ado Ekiti during a protest staged by members of the PDP, artisans, okada riders, ethics groups and  members of other political parties against the non inclusion of Oluyede in the provisional list released last week by INEC.

The IPAC chairman stated: “I’m here to convey the message of all political parties in Ekiti State under IPAC that the moment Dr Wole Oluyede doesn’t appear on the ballot paper, forget about the forthcoming election. We are not going to participate in the election and you know what it means”.

Owoola was accompanied to the INEC office by the Chairman of the Accord Party, Phillips Oluropo Adeniji.

The leader of the delegation to INEC, Deji Ogunsakin intimated INEC that the November 8 PDP primary that produced Dr Wole Oluyede was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere without problem.

“There was no court case or injunction, we had our peaceful election without parallel election. Nigerians would want to know what happens why Dr Wole Oluyede”s name was not among the provisional list “.

“We had it on good authority that APC is working with INEC in order to disqualify PDP and I urge INEC to demonstrate neutrality”

“On behalf of Dr Wole Oluyede, I ask  for due process from INEC because the primary election produced Dr Wole Oluyede without parallel election. APC has post primary cases and PDP does not. You have given us a very good advice and we shall abide by it”.

“IPAC has made it clear that they will boycott the election if the situation does not change. Ekiti people are earnestly asking for change and the incumbent is afraid of contest against other parties. We are going home to tell our supporters that we have met with you and we are going to deliver the message” Ogunsakin reiterated.

He was of the opinion that INEC will do the needful saying,  “We all know that INEC will not want to truncate the process of having government in Ekiti State in 2026.

“I am happy that according to INEC, PDP followed the normal process for the conduct of the primary election and there is no reason why PDP and others should be excluded and if this stands, we shall boycott the election.”

The Head of Election and Party Monitoring, of INEC, Kehinde Mustapha welcomed the party leaders and assured that their interest would be attended to.

“In line with section 82 (2) of the electoral act, we sent representative to monitor the primary. We don’t know anything that happened later. We are with you and we appreciate the protest. On behalf of REC, we welcome you”.

The INEC Head of Department, Legal, Tunde Salako assured that the commission is working on the time frame and advised that they should go further to inform the headquarters about the development.

Salako opined: “INEC has no constitutional rights to disqualify candidate. The headquarters is in the position to explain better and as a commission that obeys the law, we don’t have option. Channel your letter or grievances to Abuja which is always in charge of this.

“Some of us are good Christians and Muslims, we are not going to be bias and we are going to be free and fair in our conduct” he assured.

Wike and Basiru have been in a war of words over a warning to stay away from Rivers State politics.

In a post on his Facebook page, Olayinka said Basiru, who failed to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket in Osun State, wants to wade into the political tussle in Rivers State.

According to Olayinka, Wike’s influence will secure more votes for President Bola Tinubu in Osun State than Basiru.

He said, “Someone that wanted an APC Governorship ticket, but couldn’t get it.

“Na him wan come another  State come help another person.

“In Osun State, Wike’s influence will still give President Tinubu more votes than Ajibola Basiru. Wike’s message to Ajibola Basiru is simple.

“Dey your dey, make I dey my dey. No dey do cho cho cho come Rivers. Make he no carry his shoulder enter another man’s territory. Politics is local, it is grassroots based.

“In 2023, as a serving Senator and Spokesperson of the Senate, Ajibola Basiru lost his re-election bid.

“You wey no fit win your own election as a serving senator and Senate Spokesperson, na you go come Rivers come help person?

“But make Mr Ajibola Basiru use that shoulder wey him dey carry up and down to bring all parties in Osun State together for President Tinubu, the way Wike has done in Rivers State first.”

“Watching Joshua fight has become emotionally distressing for us. Each time he is knocked down, our hearts go down with him”

If Information coming from Anthony Joshua’s family is anything to go by, the former  Boxing Heavyweight Champion may have decided to quit his profitable Boxing career.

There is speculation that the Boxer is considering retiring from the Boxing Profession following the fatal accident that claimed the lives of his two friends and associates at the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on December 29, 2025.

The news of his planned retirement was disclosed by his uncle, Adedamola Joshua, who in an Interview with Punch Newspaper said that the 36-year-old boxer privately informed his family of the decision in the aftermath of the accident.

Adedamola had stated that the Boxer’s decision brought a sense of relief to relatives who have long struggled with the emotional toll of his career.

“The major thing there is that he has retired from boxing. That is one thing that makes us glad because each time he’s fighting in the ring, we are always carried away emotionally,” he said.

He added that watching Joshua fight had become increasingly distressing for the family.

“Each time he’s knocked down, it is just like the heart is coming out of our chest. All these emotional feelings whenever he’s fighting, it’s too much trauma for us,” he said, confirming that Joshua had communicated his intention directly to the family.

The Nigeria born British Pugilist was born in  Watford to Nigerian parents, and had been on holiday in Nigeria after his December 19 knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami before the fatal accident that claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, both long-time members of Joshua’s boxing camp. Ghami served as his strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was his personal trainer.

The duo of Ghami and Latif were buried in London last Sunday, in which Joshua attended the emotional funeral service for the two men at the London Central Mosque on Sunday, where mourners gathered as the Janaza prayers were observed.

Joshua pledged to support the families of the deceased for life.

He broke his public silence on Sunday with an Instagram post showing him with the bereaved relatives, captioned “My Brother’s Keeper,” accompanied by heart emojis and a military helmet symbol.

Massive Protest In Ondo State Sports Complex Over Appointment Of Acting GM

Massive Protest in Ondo State
Massive Protest In Ondo State Sports Complex

By Akinwale Kasali

There is palpable tension at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure, Ondo State Capital. Protesters disrupted activities at the Complex following the appointment of Evelyn Lebi as Acting General Manager of the Ondo State Sports Council.

The aggrieved protesters, comprising Sports Union Leaders, Coaches, and Athletes, said the appointment was against the wish of stakeholders, adding that the appointment would not advance Sports development in the State.

Coach Fisayo Bello, Coordinating Chairman of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, AUPCTRE, said sports in Ondo State was already in a “comatose” state and required a competent technocrat to revive it.

He added that the Acting General Manager does not have the wherewithal to revive Sports in the State, adding that the person needed to paddle the affairs of Sport in the State is a passionate and dedicated individual.

“We need someone with passion for sports who can take us back to our glorious days, not backwards. Lebi contested four years ago, we said no, and we are saying no now.

“We want a better person, we want a technocrat that can take us back to our glorious days, not backwards,” Bello said.

Coach Osifo Moses, Chairman of AUPCTRE in the State and a boxing coach, said sports in the state needed a better candidate than Lebi. He added that the council required a reputable and committed leader for the position.

The Chairman of the Ondo State Professional Coaches Association, Joshua Ogunbiyi, said the protest was not against Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, whom he described as passionate about sports development, but against the choice of Lebi.

Ogunbiyi further alleged that Lebi had previously served at the council and was involved in actions that caused tension among staff, adding that stakeholders had repeatedly expressed reservations about her competence.

“At this stage, sport is not moving forward. We want somebody vibrant and competent, someone who will revive sports development.

“A person like Lebi has contested for this position over three times, and we have made the government realise that she is not competent.

“We are not against the governor bringing whoever he feels can revive sports, but as far as we are concerned, Lebi is not one of them,” he said.

In the same vein, Idowu Afun, General Captain of Ondo State Athletes, called on the state government to appoint a competent and vibrant person to head the council.

Henry Omoyofunmi, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development,  described the protest as “strange” and unjustified.

He stated that Lebi was qualified and a professional, noting that she had served at the Sports Council for more than 15 years and was currently a Director of Sports in the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“She was redeployed after the tenure expiration of the former general manager. The Head of Service posted an accounting officer to the council, and I don’t see why that should be challenged,” he said.

The commissioner alleged that the protesters were acting under unknown influence, noting that the appointment would not hinder sporting activities but rather help reposition the sector.
