A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 Properties  suspected to be proceeds of illegal activities strongly believed to be linked to the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami.

The order was sequel to an ex-parte motion brought before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFFC, against  Malami, his wife and son.

According to the motion filed by the Commission’s Counsel, Ekele Iheanacho SAN, the properties are located in choice areas of Kaduna, Abuja, Kebbi and Kaduna states.

In the Certified True Copy, CTC, of the order issued on Tuesday January 6, 2026, but was released on Wednesday, Justice Emeka Nwite, also directed the publication of the order of interim forfeiture in a National daily, inviting interested persons to show cause(s) why the said properties should not be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria within 14 days of the publication.

“It is hereby ordered that an interim order of this Honourable Court is hereby made forfeiting to the Federal Government of Nigeria the properties described in Schedule 1 below which are reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities”, Justice Nwite ruled.

Some of the said properties as listed in the schedule include Luxury Duplex on Amazon street, Plot No 3011 Maitama Abuja, two winged story building on Onitsha Crescent Area II Abuja.( formally Harmonia Hotels Limited), Plot 683 ,Jabi District , Cadastral Zone B04 comprising five story building ( now Luxurious Meethaq Hotels Ltd ,Jabi with 53 rooms/ suites ,and property No 3130 within Cadastral Zone A04 ,Asokoro District FCT Abuja.

The EFCC in the 16 count charge accused the former Minister of Justice, his wife and an employee of a firm linked to Malami (Rahamaniyya Properties Ltd), as well as his son of carrying out various suspicious transactions ,and attempting to conceal the origin of billions of naira through bank accounts and property acquisitions.

The offences were said to have been committed between 2015 and 2023, when Malami served as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice under the administration of late President Mohammadu Buhari.

According to the anti-corruption Commission, the former Minister, his wife and son conspired to disguise the origin of funds, acquire property by proxy, and retain sums they, allegedly, knew were proceeds of unlawful activities, in violation of extant laws , particularly the Money Laundering ( Prohibition and Prevention ) Acts of 2011 and 2022 as amended.

Bandits have reportedly launched an attack on Oloka Village near Ikoyi Ile in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo state, killing five personnel attached to the Old Oyo National Park and injuring several villagers.

The attack, which occurred late Tuesday night, is the latest in a series of violent incidents linked to armed groups operating around communities bordering the National Park.

Sources added that the attackers arrived the village around 11:00 p.m. on motorcycles, firing sporadically.

Reports added that the incident comes less than a month after three people and a pregnant woman were shot in the area, while others were abducted with a ransom demand of ₦20 million.

A local source told a medium on Wednesday that the assailants specifically targeted the forest guards’ office, killing three National Park Service (NPS) officers and two casual staff during the assault.

Confirming the incident, a villager, Mr. Kehinde Salau, who narrowly escaped the attack, said the victims were forest guards deployed to secure the Old Oyo National Park.

He added that some officers and villagers narrowly escaped abduction when the attackers stormed the facility.

According to him, the bandits vandalised properties and abducted some residents. He recalled that the same armed group had invaded another community in Oriire Local Government Area in December, during which they demanded ₦20 million ransom and two motorcycles.

The police authorities in Oriire Local Government Area has not reacted to the incident, but it was gathered that the bodies of the slain National Park Service officials have been evacuated to the Police Area Command in Ogbomoso.

Residents of the affected communities have continued to call on the Oyo State Government to urgently strengthen security across Oriire Local Government Area, describing the attack as terrifying and sudden.

A resident, said  banditry had been ongoing since November last year.

“The attacks started in November at Oko Ile, where a man narrowly escaped abduction after gunshots.

“In December, at Ahorodada, a pregnant woman and her child were shot during a kidnapping attempt,” the resident said.

“Baba-Ahmed: I ran for the Presidential seat long before Peter Obi did”

A challenge for the Presidential seat has come the way of Peter Obi from a most unexpected quarters.

Obi’s Presidential running mate in the 2023 General Elections, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has declared his ambition to the office of the President.

He will contest under the Labour Party, LP, the Party  under which both of them contested in 2023.

Baba-Ahmed made public his ambition at a rally on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

Baba-Ahmed’s suprise declaration comes one week after Obi exited the LP for the African Democratic Congress, ADC, the Party under which he has declared interest for the top job.

Baba-Ahmed, speaking to party members and supporters, said his aspiration was neither “reactionary nor dependent on Obi’s political decisions.” He added that his presidential ambition predates the 2023 General Election.

He said: “I have made myself available to contest for the office in 2027. I’m not following anybody’s trajectory or stepping into anybody’s shoes.

“Can I please remind you that before His Excellency Governor Peter Obi filed for the Presidency, I aspired for the Presidency before him? The records are there for you to see.”

It will be interesting how Obi and Baba-Ahmed will square up during the campaigns if both clinches the ticket of their respective political parties.

Abure No Longer National Chairman Of Labour Party –  INEC

Julius Abure

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Wednesday January 7, 2027, cited the April 4, 2025, Supreme Court judgment on the leadership crisis in the Labour Party, LP, as a major reason for its refusal to grant access code to the party for the February, 2026, FCT Council polls.

The electoral umpire said the apex court of the land in the said ruling explicitly stated that the tenure of the Julius Abure-led  National Executive Committee, NEC, has elapsed.

A statement from its Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Eta-Messi, noted that the  Commission, pursuant to the Supreme Court verdict can no longer recognize Abure as the National Chairman of LP.

The Source reports that INEC’s explanation is coming against the backdrop of a protest match by the LP faction on Monday, January 5, 2025, against  the exclusion of the party’s  candidates from the forthcoming FCT Council elections.

The INEC stated that the entire controversy stemmed from  LP’s prolonged leadership and internal crises since 2024, culminating in the said Supreme court judgment in ” Appeal No SC/CV/56/2025 ( Usman vs Labour Party ) delivered on 4th April 2025.

The Commission noted that the Supreme Court in the said ruling “unequivocally held that the tenure of the Barr. Julius Abure-led National Executive Committee had expired.”

However, the INEC expressed surprise that despite the ruling, “the Abure-led faction purportedly conducted primaries for the August 16, 2025, bye-election nationwide, and the FCT Area Council Election.

According to the statement, the development inevitably resulted in series of legal proceedings between the Commission and the LP faction.

The INEC noted that in one of the legal battles, the LP faction approached the Federal High Court Abuja in Suit No FHC/ABJ/1523/2025 -Labour Party vs INEC challenging its exclusion from the bye-election.

“Judgment was subsequently delivered on 15th August 2025, dismissing the suit and enforcing the Supreme Court’s position that Barr.Julius Abure was no longer recognized as the National Chairman of the Labour Party, and thus upholding the decision of INEC to exclude the Labour Party from the bye-election.

The Commission, however, said  that the LP faction went ahead to file multiple suits in different courts across the country, “seeking to orders compelling the Commission to grant access codes for the uploading of candidates for the FCT Area Council election.

“These include Suit No NSD/LF.84/2024 before the Nasarawa state High Court Akwanga Division and later Suit No FHC/ABJ/2110/2025 seeking an order compelling INEC to issue access code to its candidates.”

Similarly, INEC informed that the LP faction filed another Suit at the FCT High Court, Jabi Division marked “Suit No CV/4792/2025 alongside a motion seeking an order compelling INEC to issue access codes.”

The Commission noted that the matter was adjourned to January 15 ,2026 after it filled its reply.

“One would have expected the party to wait for the hearing of this motion, but instead, it filed another Suit with Suit No CV/4930/2025 before the FCT High Court ,Life Camp Division seeking the same relief”

The Commission noted that although an interim order was granted in the Life Camp suit on December 16, 2025, directing it to upload the names and particulars of Labour Party candidates the court” expressly stated that the order would elapse after seven days unless extended”.

The INEC stated that the suit was promptly challenged with the interim order elapsing on December 23, 2025, and was never extended by the Court.

“Given that the matter is subjudice, INEC will continue to respect the sanctity of the judicial process, and await the final determination of the pending cases”, the Commission stated.

PDP Says Meeting With Stakeholders Aimed At Repositioning Party

PDP Stakeholders Meeting

Jonathan has reaffirmed his loyalty and commitment to PDP – Turaki

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has explained that meetings by its leaders with former bigwigs in the country is aimed at repositioning and rebuilding the party ahead of 2027 general elections.

This is as the party confirmed plans to commence high-level reconciliation and strategic talks with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex–Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and other influential political stakeholders.

The disclosure was made, Wednesday, by the PDP South-South Chairman, Chief Emmanuel Ogidi, during an interview on Channels Television.

Ogidi pointed out that the consultations form part of a broader nationwide outreach aimed at rebuilding the party and reaffirming its status as Nigeria’s foremost opposition platform, despite the internal challenges it has faced since the 2023 general elections.

According to him, the party has already begun engagements with key national figures.

“We are doing the rounds. We have already seen former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former President Ibrahim Babangida.

“It is all about meeting those who are important in Nigeria to let them know that we are alive and that the party is moving forward”.

Confirming plans to engage both Obi and Atiku, Ogidi described the move as a deliberate attempt to reconnect with major opposition figures who had played central roles in the PDP’s past electoral fortunes.

“Yes, we also have plans to see Peter Obi. Even Atiku Abubakar, as a former vice president of the country, we are going to meet him”, he said, stressing that “the PDP remains the real face of democracy in Nigeria”.

Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar were both prominent members of the PDP in the past, serving respectively as vice presidential and presidential candidates in the 2019 general election.

Atiku also emerged as the party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 polls. Both politicians have since aligned with the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

The renewed reconciliation drive comes amid lingering internal divisions within the PDP, following its defeat by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the last general election.

In a related development, members of the PDP National Working Committee, (NWC), on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.

The delegation was led by the party’s National Chairman, Ambassador Tanimu Turaki.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Turaki said Jonathan reaffirmed his loyalty and continued commitment to the PDP.

“We have his assurance that he remains an active, card-carrying member of the PDP and feels a sense of obligation to support the party”, Turaki said.

He described the former president’s remarks as “very reassuring and encouraging” as the PDP prepares for forthcoming off-season elections in Ekiti and Osun states, as well as the 2027 general elections.

Fmr. DSS DG, Lawal Daura, To Run  For Katsina State Governorship Seat

Lawal Daura

By Adesina Soyooye

A former Director General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Lawal Daura, wants to be the Governor of Katsina State in 2027.

Daura announced his plan to occupy the number one seat in Katsina in an interview with DCL Hausa on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

During the interview, Daura particularly criticised the the current administration’s handling of security issues and said it is the key reason he decided to run for the office of the Governor.

He disclosed that he was already through with consultations on his  political aspirations and, very soon,  will reveal the political party under which he plans to run.

Daura: “I have been making consultations on the platform to use to contest, and the consultations have been concluded. Very soon, I will make the platform known.

“Why do people serve for one or two terms? If they get it right, fine. But if the reverse is the case, then there is no point in seeking re-election. It is obvious the current governor is not capable.

“It is like putting a load on somebody and adjusting it. If he complains that the load is too heavy, you have to take it down to avoid destroying fragile items.

“For the current administration, we can say thank you for your efforts, but you should take a break because you can’t continue.

“I never saw myself coming out to contest. I admire politics, but I only participated from the background.”

Aged 72, Daura was appointed the Director General of the DSS on July 2, 2015, by the late President Muhammadu Buhari. He was, however, sacked from.office by Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo on August 7, 2018 for embarrassing the Federal Government. He had, in the absence of President Buhari, and without any clearance from Vice President Osinbajo, ordered the “invasion” of the National Assembly by Operatives of the DSS over a couple of still unstated  sundry issues. Buhari resisted all pressures to reinstate him even though was a Buhari loyalist.

Speculation is strong that he would run under the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

The incumbent Governor, Dr. Dikko Radda is of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and is a relation of late President Buhari.

Rewriting The Past: Why Repackaging Adeosun Is Dangerous Exercise In National Amnesia

0
Kemi Adeosun
Kemi Adeosun

By ‘Jare Hammed

Recently, there have been coordinated media efforts to repackage Kemi Adeosun, Nigeria’s former minister of finance, an exercise that appears less like public enlightenment and more like a calculated attempt at historical revisionism. Through selective recollection and moral posturing, one of the most embarrassing scandals of the Buhari administration is being reframed as an act of personal integrity rather than what it truly was: a case of sustained deception that collapsed only under intense public pressure.

Adeosun’s resignation in 2018 did not occur in a vacuum. It followed months of public outrage over the revelation that she possessed a forged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) exemption certificate, an offence under Nigerian law. Long before her eventual exit, Nigerians demanded a clear and honest explanation. None came. Instead, what unfolded was silence, deflection, blame-shifting, and an unconvincing attempt to wait out public anger.

In a recent interview with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, Adeosun attempted a rhetorical sleight of hand: she portrayed her resignation as a voluntary moral decision while simultaneously admitting that she stepped down only after it became clear that no one within government was willing, or able, to explain away the forgery. This framing insults public intelligence. A resignation tendered after three months of sustained pressure, mounting evidence, and institutional embarrassment cannot reasonably be described as a proactive moral stand.

The facts of the case remain stubborn and inconvenient.

First, Adeosun needlessly procured a forged NYSC exemption certificate. Whether by commission or complicity, the document was fake. Second, credible media reports, including TheCable of September 15, 2018, indicated that attempts were made to enlist senior NYSC officials to manage or neutralise the fallout once the forgery became public. Third, rather than confront the issue directly when it emerged, Adeosun initially deflected responsibility. Fourth, when the NYSC announced it would probe the matter, it confirmed only that she had applied for an exemption certificate, pointedly declining to state that one was validly issued.

Most tellingly, Adeosun waited for three full months before resigning. By then, the evidence was overwhelming, and the silence from the government deafening. The resignation came not because the truth had been courageously embraced, but because it could no longer be buried. Her justification in that interview with Laolu Akande that she was not a Nigerian citizen at the time she graduated and therefore was not eligible for NYSC service only deepens the puzzle. If that explanation is true, then there was absolutely no need to seek an exemption certificate at all, let alone a forged one. That she did so points to a deeper and more troubling pattern: the normalisation of cutting corners among Nigeria’s elite, secure in the belief that consequences are for the poor and powerless.

It is against this background that Adeosun’s recent pontification on Nigeria’s economy, including her robust defence of economic policies of the current administration, must be viewed. It is difficult to ignore the timing of this renewed visibility amid rumours and permutations within power corridors to bring Adeosun back to government. Whatever her intentions, the optics are clear: this is an attempt at whitewashing a past misdemeanour that goes to the heart of public trust.

Public office is not merely about technical competence. It demands unimpeachable integrity. Adeosun’s record fails that test.

A person who falsified credentials, evaded accountability, and resigned only when cornered cannot credibly present herself as fit for high public trust again. Nigeria is not short of competent, qualified people to hold public office. The country boasts several respected professionals with solid credentials and untainted records. The current administration already boasts a number of brilliant hands shaping the country’s economy.

At a time when Nigeria is grappling with economic hardship and a crisis of confidence in leadership, we must resist the temptation to recycle discredited figures simply because they once held office. National memory must not be so short, nor standards so low.

Adeosun’s media tour of repackaging should not be mistaken for redemption. Accountability delayed is accountability denied.

Nigeria deserves better, and the future of public service must rest on competence anchored firmly to character.
