OPINION: How to Avert Another Civil War in Nigeria |The Source

0

By Dele Momodu

Fellow Nigerians, I know how easy it is for men and women in politics, particularly those in the hallowed corridors of power, to readily dismiss important warnings by well-meaning citizens as rantings of enemies of government, but I’m the last person anyone could ever label as such. Without being immodest, my credentials as a patriotic Nigerian are definitely unassailable. Even if I am labelled as one of such Nigerians, I know my duty as a responsible, proudly Nigerian patriot, and I will never be deterred by such negativity. It is for this reason that I am sending out another warning this week borne out of my love and concern for the wellbeing of our dear beloved country. I don’t really mind if this selfless service is ignored like many before it. This is a duty that I must discharge, otherwise I will not be true to myself.

But let me start on a happy note. I do not know if President Muhammadu Buhari was pressured into dropping his former military chieftains this week by events that played out in the forests of Ibarapa spearheaded by Sunday Igboho, and the advice and admonition of truly non-partisan nationalistic Nigerians, but I’m happy that for whatever reasons, he eventually succumbed and did what was long overdue. I had only last week described the erstwhile military chiefs as being an incompetent security team, and that was putting it mildly. The Nigerian military that was once the toast and darling of the United Nations peacekeepers everywhere has been virtually reduced to a ragtag force in the last five years. Yet the big Generals in the Army, Navy and Air Force carried on in a business-as-usual manner, as if everything was well. They appeared more interested in other activities like operation python dance or crocodile dance, jumping against innocent, defenceless civilians than the primary tasks they were assigned to do of providing security against external and domestic insurgency and terrorists.

I hope that the President realises that his job is not done. Our security, safety and protection are not merely in the hands of the military. There are internal law enforcement agencies like the Police, Department of State Security, Civil Defence Corps and similar domestic organisations that need a similar severe and drastic shake up.  We are being ceaselessly attacked from both without and within and our security apparatus and architecture needs complete overhauling and remodelling.

I pray the new Service Chiefs will learn from the mistakes of their predecessors and restore glory to our armed forces. This can be achieved if they resist the temptations of getting deeply involved and too enmeshed in the murky waters of Nigerian politics. Their loyalty should always be to the country and not to any leader or individual. We all witnessed what happened recently in America, how the military stood firm in defence of democracy. In this clime, the story would have been different. I wish them the best of luck.

I do not know how many of our young impetuous, temerarious friends are aware of the theory that no country can survive two civil wars, but it seems that’s what we are toying with and inviting unto ourselves, so recklessly. Let me inform my young and old friends beating the tamtam  drums of war, that war is not a tea party. It is not disco or clubbing. War is a serious business. The Civil war of 1967-1970 will pale into insignificance in comparison with any war that may occur now. This is not a war that will be fought with mere guns or even machine guns. We will have more sophisticated  armoured tanks and shells, but of more concern is that there will be bombings, missiles and such similar arsenal deployed. I don’t even want to think of chemical warfare which is the norm in those countries foolish enough to bringing war into their land. Unlike the civil war of 1967, millions, not hundreds of thousands will perish in no time! Nobody will be spared. The destruction and devastation will be complete and this doomsday scenario is scary and eerie. Perish the thought, there will be no Yoruba nation or Biafra, just some balkanised desertified and desecrated entities. The only beneficiaries will be the warmongers and their agents as they will profit from the sales of arms and ammunitions. If that is what is desired, very unfortunate, but I have sounded the alarm and speak the language of peace because I know the horrendous price of war.

Why is it so difficult for us to know what we need to do but refuse to do it so stubbornly and stoically? I will now go ahead to give a breakdown of what we urgently need to do in order to avert what seems like an impending war to me.

The ball is in the President’s court. And this is not a tough game at all. Let the President free his heart and soul and love every Nigerian the way I’m sure he loves his own family. The President should see himself as the father of the nation. That is essentially what he claimed he would be when he delivered his maiden Presidential speech to the nation on 29 May 2015. We’ve virtually wasted close to six years fighting a fractious war of attrition. Our nation has never been this divided since the last civil war and it is absolutely unnecessary.

Why do I think war is impending? No one needs the gift of clairvoyance to see what’s ahead. The temperature of bitterness in Nigeria at the moment can boil a stone into pulp. It is sad that a country as endowed as Nigeria has been reduced to a nation of cows. The beautiful Fulani race has also been demoted and is now synonymous with herdsmen. That’s so disgraceful and unfortunate. I have a lot of well-educated, cultured and hardworking Fulani friends. I’ve been asking some of them how come they mismanaged their brand to the extent that cows and livestock now define everything they represent?

President Buhari’s emergence is believed to have energised the herdsmen who now feel adequately protected and untouchable. Until the President disowns the criminals and bandits and encourage and empower our security agents to treat them like the irritants and nuisance that they are, the present crisis will persist and escalate for the worse. The President needs to be told without mincing words that cattle rearing is a private business. It is none of government’s business. And certainly none of our own business. The cattle rearers should register their businesses like other Nigerians, buy land or rent their own farmlands and keep their herds within the confines of their own ranches or farms. No businessperson has the right or freedom to destroy the farm or premises of another person, eat up, burn or destroy his crops, defile and rape the other person’s family, in short literally and figuratively defecate shamelessly everywhere. As if that is not bad enough, they now brandish unregistered and extremely dangerous weapons, so confidently. In which abnormal country is that allowed and condoned except Buhari’s Nigeria!

If the cattle rearers have been allowed to roam the streets and our forests for decades and centuries, the time has now come to put a stop and an end to such backwardness. The world has since moved on. We are in the 21stcentury and not in the Stone Age. Farming and livestock breeding are now more industrialised and revolutionised. Technology has taken over. Let us upgrade how we breed and rear our cattle and other livestock. Can chicken farmers go to different parts of Nigeria and just erect their poultry on people’s private properties, even peacefully, not to talk of carrying AK-47s to browbeat and assault their generous landlords. I don’t even want to mention Piggeries and Fisheries.

I wish to say emphatically that the Governors of the States affected by this cow conundrum should never allow any form of wandering again. Those who want to continue to do the business should go and buy huge tracts of farmland and build modern farms under strict and stringent regulations! If the Governors succumb to pressure and allow this madness, of a dangerous misadventure to continue, they will have the spilled blood of their people in their hands, and they will never be able to wash them off like the Biblical Pontius Pilate. There is nothing so special about cattle rearing that should warrant this over-pampering and preferential treatment. And if the herdsmen insist that this is their culture and the only way they know how to ply their trade, they should then be restrained, restricted and banished to their Fulani territories. They cannot supplant their culture and custom on those gracious enough to welcome them to their farmlands and homes.

If care is not taking, this controversial cow business may easily trigger the civil war, most especially, if the Federal Government decides to acquire people’s land by force. I’m certain the South East and South West people have virtually declared the herdsmen persona non grata and they should respect the wishes of the people. The heated tension this is generating is totally reprehensible.

I hope the President remembers that most Southerners rejected him repeatedly between 2003 and 2011 because of the widespread belief that he’s a religious zealot and Fulani irredentist until he somehow managed to persuade Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki and others that he’s a reformed and born-again Democrat. I vividly recollect how many Nigerians warned us fervently not to make the mistake of bringing Buhari back to power. It is not true that we hated President Goodluck Jonathan. No. Most people were simply tired of the 16 years of PDP in power and the obvious profligacy and rape of our commonwealth.

Many Nigerians wanted a disciplined and simple leader who would not steal our treasury and treasures dry. No doubt, Buhari looked like that near-perfect candidate. No one ever envisaged the level of suppression, repression and unprecedented oppression that would soon engulf the whole country.

President Buhari should please spare a moment to remember and pity all the innocent people who vouched for him and not let them regret that they ever did. Nigeria is just too close to the precipice and anything can happen. He should encourage the cattle men to take strategic positions in the Northern forests. I understand that Sambisa forest is so massive that we can create many new cities and towns out of it. Let them go to the banks and raise funds to start industrial parks dedicated to livestock breeding and its offshoots and since they already possess their own guns, these might be the solution and deterrent to the Boko Haram menace as well. They will keep the bushes and forests occupied and make it difficult for terrorists to stroll in and out of the country like they currently do.

The second time bomb in Nigeria is the issue of religion. The President must know and understand that Nigeria is a secular country, and he must totally downplay religion and allow everyone to deal directly with his/her God. It is again not the business of government to intervene or be involved in religion. If we can curb religious bigotry and intolerance, a lot of our problems would have been resolved and eliminated. The government will save the huge sums of money we spend on sending pilgrims to Mecca and Jerusalem. A country as broke and impoverished as Nigeria can no longer afford that kind of reckless spending. No religion is superior or inferior to the other. Every Nigerian should be free to practice his religion anywhere without any fear of harassment.

I have said it many times. The Nigerian police should be very well equipped and upgraded. We do not need soldiers on the streets in peace time. All we need is identify very bright officers like the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, who has demonstrated professionalism all the way and has reduced crime to the barest minimum in Lagos State. This achievement is possible because he is conversant with the territory and he is a hands-on officer. I read about how he goes out every night to personally monitor what’s going on and he does not suffer fools gladly. I remember a friend who wanted to influence a matter, but everyone told him not to bother because “Odumosu will not bend the rules!” He desisted. I’m sure, the force can identify other competent officers and replicate what he is doing in Lagos in other States. It is all about putting those who understand certain terrains in places they understand very well. Police officers are like journalists and we are as good as the sources and resources available to us.

The third issue that can ignite trouble is the attempt to completely marginalize the Igbo people 51 years after the supposed end of the Civil War. Despite coming out of the ruins and ashes of the civil war, the Igbo have amply demonstrated their uncommon brilliance and resilience. They’ve been performing spectacular feats locally and globally. There is no country in the world you won’t meet Igbo people doing great things. Why can’t we then take advantage of their mega talents to create our own Silicon Valley in the South East, for example? Given the necessary support, the Igbo will compete favourably against the Chinese, Indians, Koreans, Japanese and others, if not surpass them. The Igbo have become so tired of the country called Nigeria and any sincere person cannot fault them. It is the reason Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has become a folk hero and cult figure. Any little provocation may trigger an explosion in the South East which may snowball into the South West and become a veritable unquenchable fireball! I will plead with President Buhari to do everything possible not to let this happen and that instead he will do everything to bring all Nigerians together.

However, if the President insists and decides that he can use bullying tactics, intimidation and force to suppress the visible, palpable agitations in Yorubaland and Igboland, may God help and rescue us all…

Pastor Bakare: Power Changed Buhari’s Attitude |The Source

Tunde Bakare

By Akinwale Kasali

Pastor Tunde Bakare, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Vice Presidential Candidate for the Congress for Progressives Change, CPC, at the 2011 General Election, has disclosed that he alongside Nigerians are disappointed in  President Buhari’s administration.

The Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, formerly known as Latter Rain Assembly, said he feels disgusted and irritated at the way and manner the All Progressives Congress, APC, led President Buhari has been handling the affairs of the nation.

He said the expectations of Nigerians have not been met by the current administration since being in the saddle almost six years ago.

Bakare made this revelation during a Virtual Interview with veteran Journalist and former Presidential Candidate, Dele Momodu.

The outspoken and controversial Cleric said there is a general feeling of disappointment among Nigerians who expected change, sadly, they are yet to see the necessary changes they desire and yawn for.

He bemoaned the lack of leadership, especially with the rising cases of kidnappings and killings, causing non-state actors to take law into their hands.

According to Bakare: “We are praying hard that the county will survive and become strong again, this is not what we all call the Nigeria of our dreams

“Nigeria will survive and will become the Nigeria of our dreams but right now, things are not together, especially with the drum of disintegration which is louder than before.

“Nigeria is better together, if we go back together to the basics of how we came together, looking at 1960 and 1963, we can still be together. We are not there yet, but we are getting closer.”

He added: “The truth of the matter is it is still the same Buhari, in the midst of many competing interests, we respond differently. The President is still himself, some have even asked me if he is not somebody else.

“Power changes people, has power changed him or is he making the best situation of the circumstances? He will be the one to answer it

“The expectations of Nigerians, including everyone who woke up to say we need a breath of fresh air, has not been met. There is a feeling of disappointment.

“Citizens have right to demand for good governance. People deserve the government they get.”

Citing a biblical illustration, he said: “We rejected PDP and embraced APC’s change but it appears we have been shortchanged”.

Northern Elders Urge Fulani To Return To North Following Ejection From The South |The Source

By Akinwale Kasali

For weeks now, there has been clamouring from the South-West and the South East for marauding Fulani Herdsmen to leave their region, following incessant kidnapping, killings , maiming, assaults, rape, wanton destruction of  properties and farm produce.

The issues have been at the front burner, leading to the eviction notice by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, Yoruba Activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho and Indigenous People of Biafra Advocate, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu for the Fulani to vacate their territories with immediate effect.

In this vein, the Northern Elders Forum, NEF, has told the Fulani community in the Southern part of the country to return to the North if they are forcefully ejected from the communities they reside in.

According to a statement by Director, Publicity and Advocacy of NEF, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the Elders called on the Northern Governors to be ready to receive the Fulani community who would return as a result of forceful ejection from where they reside in the South.

NEF expressed concern over the reports of ejection threats and attacks on Fulani herders, families and communities in some states of the South, advising Fulani communities to seek protection where it is available and to resist the temptation to take the law into their own hands.

“It is necessary to warn people who threaten law-abiding Fulani communities in all parts of Nigeria, but particularly in some parts of the South, to desist.

“The vast majority of Fulani are law-abiding and have rights to live lawfully wherever they can find means of subsistence. Like all Nigerians who can be found in every inch of Nigeria, the rights of the Fulani will not be abridged by criminals hiding behind ethnic interests to exterminate them.

“Citizens and groups who play the role of police and other law-enforcement agencies are committing crimes, and they must be stopped by leaders who are sworn to protect the law and security of all Nigerians”, the statement said.

NEF, therefore, said “If communities in parts of the country insist that the lawful Fulani is unwelcome and has no right to their security, then the Forum will advise them to relocate to the North. Northern Governors should move urgently to prepare to receive Fulani communities being forcefully ejected.”

The Forum, however, called on President Muhammadu Buhari and State Governors to take immediate and decisive steps to protect law-abiding members of Fulani communities from those believe that Fulani has no rights in Nigeria.

“The Forum demands that the Nigeria Police must live up to its constitutional responsibility to detect crimes and arrest and prosecute criminals, whoever they are.

“States which seek to limit criminal activities are perfectly entitled to do so, but they must follow due process, and avoid exposing innocent citizens to danger at all cost,” the statement noted.

“The Forum appeals again for all Nigerians to exercise restraint and not to play into the hands of people who desire to achieve dubious political goals by pitching citizens against each other. Persons who inflame passions by circulating videos and other materials should also desist,” the statement added.

Rotimi Akeredolu - Ondo Communal Clash

By Ayodele Oni

Contrary to insinuations that people of Ondo state should not expect anything during the second term of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, hope rose on Tuesday as the governor promised to hit ground immediately after his inauguration.

Governor Akeredolu and his deputy, Lucky Ayedatuwa are expected to be sworn in later this month, following their victory at the October 10 Governorship poll in the state.

The victory of the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) is however still being challenged at the Election Petition Tribunal by the runner up in the election, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) in the election.

Playing host to Ijaw/Arogbo traditional council in Akure, Akeredolu assured that he would not rest on his laurels.

“Our second term is not for us to sleep. We will hit the ground running from the day we are sworn in. We will work. We have a lot of work to do.”

He promised that his administration would not abandon them as the people voted for him massively during the election.

The Arogbo/Ijaw Traditional Council was led by the Agadagba and paramount ruler of Arogbo/Ijaw kingdom , His imperial Majesty Pere Zaccheus Egbunu Doubra.

”We note your role and the role of your people in our re-election. You did excellently well. It has never happened before. From the record that I have , we didn’t lose any of the wards in your area. We thank you. We will not forget you.”

Governor Akeredolu charged the Arogbo/Ijaw people to also look into the possibility of harnessing the potentials in the area for commercial purposes.

Earlier, the Agadagba described the re-election of the Governor as well deserved, adding that it was a landslide victory.

“Your re-election as the governor of this state was well deserved. Your victory was landslide and we are happy to be part of your success.”

Fayemi Says First Batch Of Covid 19 Vaccines Will Cater For Few Nigerians |The Source

By Ayodele Oni

Only 40 percent of Nigeria’s population is expected to benefit from the Covid 19 vaccines due to arrive the country anytime from now.

Chairman, Nigeria’s Governor’s Forum, Dr Kayode Fayemi who disclosed this said that only 80 million doses of the vaccine would be available this year.

These were contained in his lecture titled ‘The Role Of Nigeria State Governments  In Recovery: Responses To Covid 19 Linked Challenges’ delivered on Tuesday at Chatham House Event, London, United Kingdom.

Dr Fayemi, who is also Ekiti state Governor, told his audience that states have been collaborating with the federal government to ensure that the vaccines are available in the country.

“Just last week, the NGF invited experts to brief Governors on vaccine procurement and administration. We had a National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, where the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) shared the plans around vaccines procurement.

“We expect about 80m doses of vaccines would be available in 2021 to cover 40% of the population, while another 60m doses is being planned for 2022.

“Beyond Government’s procurement of vaccines, we at the NGF are also strong proponents of the utilisation of public-private partnerships in vaccines procurement as a means of closing the gap between what is available and what is necessary to achieve herd immunity.”

According to him: “The impact of the pandemic was relatively mild in the first wave, the virulence and mortality seen in this second wave appears to have increased significantly.

“With increased demands for hospital bed space and oxygen requirements necessitating an increase in spending on health services both by federal and state governments.”

Giving a background if the pandemic in Nigeria, Dr Fayemi explained that “the COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruptions to the health and economy of nations, including Nigeria.

“As at today, Nigeria has tested 1.3m persons for COVID-19, with 10% (131,242) of these confirmed positive.

“Compared with the global and Africa’s Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 2.2% and 2.5% respectively, Nigeria has fared better with a CFR of 1.2%.

“Six States, Lagos, FCT, Plateau, Kaduna, Oyo and Rivers have contributed 70% of confirmed cases, with Lagos the commercial nerve of the country contributing about 40% of total burden.

“Data indicates that men appear to be disproportionately affected accounting for 69% of the confirmed cases. Most cases occur in people aged 31-40 years.

“In the medium to long term, we must begin to think strategically about the future of public health security and therefore explore the potential of in-country manufacturing of approved vaccines, following technology transfer.

“The pandemic is a good reminder of the implications of public health outbreaks on national security. We must take the leap and gain a better level of independence, in the area of vaccine research and development but also science generally.

“Another key point to note is ownership. Public health is not for the health sector alone as is popularly practiced in countries including Nigeria.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is perhaps our biggest lesson around this, as the pandemic has affected all spheres of the economy.

“Nigeria now has a National Action Plan for Health Security (NAPHS) that includes a multi-sectoral approach to prepare for and respond to disease outbreaks.

“Every sector must now contribute to ensuring health security and this is not limited to the provision of funds alone.

“Many of the determinants of health are outside the health sector, and so we must have multi-sectoral leadership and response to public health emergencies.”

Uzodimma To South-East: Return To Mainstream Politics |The Source

Hope Uzodimma and Ken Nnamani

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, on Tuesday, in Owerri, flagged off the All Progressive Congress (APC)  registration and re-validation exercise for the South East with a charge on leaders and stakeholders to work hard and ensure that at least 70% of South East population are registered as APC members.

Addressing the party faithfuls at the Eze-Imo Auditorium, the Governor informed them that their numerical strength will assist them to plan ahead and that “the same strength will also assist in the conduct of party primaries and every other exercise that will have to do with membership of the party.”

He emphasized that the numerical strength of each state or zone will surely go a long way in determining the bargaining strength of the zone even though no one expects the party membership of every state or zone to be the same.

The Governor told the members that the party attaches great importance to the revalidation exercise expected to last up to March 15, 2021 having started in Kastina with President Muhammadu Buhari performing the flag-off ceremony on Saturday January 30, 2021.

Governor Uzodimma reiterated his earlier call on the South East to return to the mainstream government at the centre which is controlled by the APC, insisting that “the only way the South East can achieve that is through her membership strength that will define their bargaining power in the forth coming general election.”

The Governor explained: “We cannot achieve our dream of a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction by remaining outside the mainstream national politics. Even more importantly we cannot get the justice we seek from the federation by playing opposition politics”.

He therefore asked the leaders to see it as their responsibility and go all out to participate in the registration and revalidation exercise to make the statement loud and clear that the South East is set to take her rightful position as members of the ruling party.

The Governor did not mince words to inform the mammoth APC crowd that Imo State is already reaping bountifully from being part of the ruling party and the attendant proper reconnection to National political grid.

This, he said, is manifest on the massive road construction of both federation and state roads in the State which is as a result of support from the Federal Government.

He reassured those who have expressed fears that this exercise will be used against them that they have nothing to worry about. He explained: “The exercise is not intended to witch hunt anyone. No leader has any power to prevent anyone from been registered or revalidated.”

Rather, Governor Uzodimma called on the APC faithfuls to use the exercise to strengthen their bond of unity. ” Our goal is to build a strong and united party in the South East that will continue to offer quality service and democracy dividends to the people,” he said.

Earlier in their various addresses, the South East member in the National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ken Nnamani said that “the registration and revalidation has become necessary to truly know who is of APC and who is not and ensure that APC is not cut napping in the web of new and emerging electoral act that may be determined by numerical strength of various political powers.”

He therefore enjoined leaders at all levels to see the exercise as important and mobilize their members to be part of it.

The Deputy Chief Whip in the National Assembly, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejiocha advised the leaders to ensure they mobilize women to register as they are the most assured electorate at the actual days of election.

She reemphasized that there is no way the South East will be clamouring for a President of Igbo extraction without showing through their numerical strength that they are truly members of the ruling party.

In a welcome address, the APC Chairman in Imo State, Chief Marcon Nlemigbo assured the visitors and all present that the State is ready for the programme and that APC is one, hence nobody should express fear of marginalization or exclusion, “rather all hands should be on deck to achieve a successful exercise.”

By Ayodele Oni

The Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has reiterated the commitment of his government to advance rural and community development.

He spoke on Tuesday in Ado Ekiti when the Board Chairman of the State Community and Social Development Agency, (EKCSDA), Chief Biodun Akin-Fasae, paid him a visit to brief him on the progress made on the NG-CARES project, which is billed to take off in May this year.

The Governor  said the promises of his Government to ensure rural and community development shall be met.
“For us as a government, rural development is a priority. We shall be building on what we did during my first tenure in office. I know that the flag off of the NG-CARES is May, and as a focal person in the design of the project, I can assure you that we would do everything possible within the available resources to support rural and community development.”

The Governor  praised EKCSDA for its excellent performance in the implementation of CSDP across the sixteen local government areas of the state, while promising the Agency  a better support to enable it implement the NG-CARES project in line with the project implementation objectives.

Earlier in his remarks, Chief Akin-Fasae told the governor that he was in his office to brief him on the preparedness of the Agency towards the implementation of the NG-CARES project and the readiness of his team to hit the ground running once the project starts in May.

Chief Fasae who was accompanied by top officials of the agency, thanked the governor for his support towards the Agency during the implementation of the CSDP, promising that the Agency would do even better under the NG-CARES project.

In another development, Governor Fayemi has approved the appointment of Mr Akin Rotimi as Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy.

Rotimi takes over from Mrs Sola Salako-Ajulo, who resigned recently to take up an appointment as a member of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, (representing the Southwest).

A renowned Communications Strategist, Rotimi had earlier served as Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Strategic Communications during Governor Fayemi’s first term in office and was Special Adviser (Investment Promotions) to the Honourable Minister of Mines and Steel Development between 2015 and 2018.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Akin Oyebode stated that the appointment took effect from February 1, 2021.

How My Wife Broke My Heart; Three Children Not Mine – Hon Justice Okorodas |The Source

0
Anthony Ezonfade Okorodas

By Adesina Soyooye

A Judge of the High Court of Delta State, Hon. Justice Anthony Ezonfade Okorodas, on the 28th of January, did the unprecedented. He  addressed a Press Conference and told the story of his shame, trauma, heartbreak, and humiliation in the hands of his wife, now an Ex.

He has just found out that the three children by his wife, Celia, a lawyer, were not his, afterall. And they are grown-ups. The first will  graduate later this year,  and the second is in fourth year in a University. The last, 17, is in a boarding school.

Even though they had been separated and divorced for years, prompting the Judge to marry a second time, Ebi, also, a lawyer, the three children live with him, and Ebi, with whom he now has four children. He says there has been no discrimination in the love showered between Celia’s and Ebi’s children, as Ebi took Celia’s children as hers too.

Celia, he said, walked out on the marriage when the last child, now 17, was six years old. And has never contributed anything to their well- being.

The story of his humiliation began when he got a phone call telling him the last child, by Celia was not his biological child, that it was by another man. Shocked and confused, the Judge opted for a DNA.

And sure as night and day, the caller was right. The child was not his biologically, forcing him to, also, ask for a DNA on the first two children. The result was same. Not his biological children. He then decided to have a DNA done on the four children by his second wife. Fortunately, they were his blood and flesh.

So, why did he call a conference? He said he did so to set the records straight, to avoid gossips and side talks.

But many are of the view that he did that to, finally, rubbish and disgrace Celia, his ex-wife.

They say it goes beyond that. They insist that he has, also, destabilised the lives of the three children and exposed them to public ridicule. He ought to have handled the situation more maturely than he did, they argue,  especially, as he also said he would continue to take care of them as usual. But, perhaps, some people, also, argue, the  public disgrace was his own way of dealing with his pain and trauma.

Following, is the full text of the Press conference addressed by Justice Okorodas entitled:

DNA Confirmed Our 3Kids Are Not My Biological Children!

“Ladies and gentlemen of the Press, I thank you for attending this Press Conference.

“I have taken the decision to address the Press in respect of certain traumatic developments that have arisen between me and my ex-wife, Barrister Celia Juliet Ototo of the Ototo Family of Ovom in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

“It is now nearly 11 years since our separation and divorce. This Press Statement is important in order to prevent damaging speculations, half- truths and outright lies from persons who may want to cash in on the tragedy that has befallen my home.

“Sometime during the coronavirus lockdowns early last year, I received information from an anonymous source that indicated that the last of the three children from my previous marriage was, in fact, not my biological child. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions at the time, I had to wait until August 2020 to carry out a DNA test.

“The DNA test result which came out in September 2020 confirmed that I was not the biological father of the child.

“Consequently, I convened a joint meeting between my extended family on the one side, and Celia’s paternal and maternal families (i.e., the Ototo Family of Ovom Town and the Agbagidi Family of Yenagoa Town) on the other side, where I confronted her with the paternity fraud allegation.

“Although she initially strongly insisted that I was the biological father, she has since confessed to having the child with another man during the course of our marriage.

“This repulsive act of my ex-wife prompted me to conduct DNA tests in respect of the two other children. A few days ago, the results came out. Sadly, none of them is my biological child.

“This abomination has caused excruciating mental trauma to me, my present wife, Barrister (Mrs) Ebi Okorodas, and all of the innocent children involved.

“This is particularly so for Ebi, who has had to agree to having DNA tests on the four children of our own marriage.

“Thankfully, the test results confirm each of them to be my biological child.

“It is important to state that Celia walked away from the marriage when her youngest child (who is now 17 years of age) was just 6 years old.

“Since then, all of her children have lived with my wife, Ebi and I, and we have been wholly responsible for their wellbeing and education.

“Friends who are close to my family would readily attest to the fact that unless specifically informed, no one could tell that the children were not the biological children of my present wife.

“Ebi and I would continue to support the children in any way that we can. Indeed, even after the release of the first DNA test result which proved that I was not the biological father of the last child, we have continued to pay for his education in a private boarding school. The two other children are University undergraduates.

“The first, a female, will be a graduate later this year, and the second will soon enter his 4th year of study. We pray for them to overcome the trauma and become responsible citizens of our country.

“For Celia and her boyfriend or boyfriends, we leave them to their conscience. Thank you very much.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has debunked claims that he is interested in running  for the office of the President 2023.

He said it was necessary for him to deflate rumours that he is vying for the presidency in 2023, saying he has no interest for that now.

In an interview with Channels Television in Port Harcourt, Rivers  Capital, he said his political detractors were behind the recent circulation of his posters in Abuja, which fuelled rumours that he is gunning for the  office.

“Since December last year to this period, we are commissioning projects. So people are now believing that with the commissioning of projects, I may have intention to run for president.

“They have money to print posters for me. I thank them for telling Nigerians that they want me to run for president. No Nigerian can say I have ever met him, discussed with him that I want to run for President.

“That does not mean I am not a qualified person, but I have never come out to say I want to run”, he revealed.

Wike stressed that though it is his constitutional right to aspire for the office of the President, but his present interest is delivery of dividends of democracy to the good people of Rivers State.

Wike added that the amendment of the Electoral Act by the National Assembly would be mere charade if card reader was not to be used to determine the validity of every vote cast.

He also observed that several attempts to achieve a credible electoral reform had been mired by overriding personal ambition of persons with vested political interest within and outside the National Assembly, which he said was because most National Assembly members were often preoccupied with the next election, and tend to skew the electoral amendment Act to benefit their interest and that of their political party.

“Why didn’t the President sign the last amendment Electoral Act, why? Because APC as a party had informed the president that if you sign this electoral amendment, you are likely to lose the election. Therefore, don’t sign it. And of course, the President did not sign the electoral amendment Act.

“I am not carried away by the antics of the National Assembly. They all know what will make the country to move forward. One, make the election to be transparent by ensuring that all votes are counted.

“You can achieve that by allowing the card reader to function. So that the figures recorded on the card reader should tally with the transmitted figures.,” he added.

Reprieve has come for those that are yet to get their National Identification Number, (NIN) as eight weeks more extension has been approved by the federal government.

Also extended is the linkage of SIM cards with the NIN number.

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, disclosed this after a meeting with stakeholders to review the exercise.

According to him, the extension became necessary to enable Nigerians and legal residents more time to integrate their NIN and SIM.

The meeting with the stakeholders also revealed that a total of 56.18 million NINS have been collected by the mobile network operators with over one thousand and six registration centres activated for the process across the country.

The Federal Government calls on Nigerians to take advantage of the new extension window to fully participate in the exercise.
