Herdsmen Crisis: Arewa Cautions Northerners, Advises Them To Leave South |The Source

By Akinwale Kasali

Northern Youth Group under the aegis of Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, has expressed concerns on the alleged constant attacks against Northerners, especially the recent attack in Sasha market of Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State which led to loss of lives and destruction of property, advising Northerners not to take the risk of travelling to the South West for now.

A statement from its spokesman, Mock Kure, observed that, “The attention of the Northern Youths Council of Nigeria has been drawn to the ongoing Carnage against Northerners, particularly in Sasha Market of Akinyele Local Government, Oyo State, South West Nigeria wherein so many lives were either killed or injured, business premises and vehicles were burnt by Yoruba hoodlums.

“We wish to condemn such an attack in the strongest terms possible and call on security agents to arrest the perpetrators so as to serve as deterrent to would be hoodlums.”

The Arewa youths noted that the hidden agenda to expel Northerners in that Zone  started with the call on all herdsmen (Not criminal elements) by the Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency, Rotimi Akeredolu, to leave all State controlled Forest Reserves.

It explained that this led to the sudden emergence of one Sunday Igboho, “a well known motor park tout” as the Enforcer-In-Chief of the hidden, but now open agenda in far away Oyo State.

The youths noted, “The eviction orders violate the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended) which guarantees freedom of movement to all citizens and rights to own movable and unmovable properties in any part of the country.”

The statement noted that in his effort to defend the laws of the country, the Inspector General of Police gave instruction to his subordinates in the region to arrest and bring the said Sunday to Abuja, saying that the arm of the law has proven to be weak and helpless as the said wanted person has been going about dishing out fresh quit notices to law-abiding citizens and enforcing same in many States of the region.

“We believe strongly that the inability of the government at all levels to tame the lawless wings of Sunday Igboho and his co-travellers has led to the emergence of his variants, hence, the renewed attacks on settled business people and many others that can’t speak Yoruba at Sasha Market,” the statement explained.

The Group called on the Federal Government to declare Sunday Igboho’s group a terrorist organization as he is not different from Boko Haram.

They called on the Northern Governors Forum under the leadership of Plateau’s Simon  Lalong, to rally his colleagues to begin to evacuate their brothers that are trapped in the Southwest and other troubled spots in Southern Nigeria since the governments in those regions have proven to be helpless or tacitly complicit in the ceaseless attacks ”on our people.”

The statement observed that the Northern Youths continue to maintain maximum restraints despite the unjustifiable and unprovoked attacks on their people pending when government would exhaust all its cards.

It enjoined the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to mobilize resources to the market to ameliorate the sufferings of those who lost their means of livelihood to the carnage.

The Arewa youths urged the federal government to adequately compensate those who lost loved ones and property to the crisis.

The  youths, also, enjoined Northerners to desist from travelling to South West Nigeria as signals from the region remain awful, pending when the government would prove that it is now safe to travel to that region.

The statement urged Nigerians with conscience to condemn such attacks and other planned attacks, saying that together, good shall triumph over evil.

Emotion, Tears, As Usman , Knocks Out His Friend, Burns |The Source

Kamaru Usman

By Akinwale Kasali

As expected, it was a tense fight. The two former training partner and friends, Nigerian fighter, Kamaru Usman and his Brazilian counterpart, Gilbert Burns were full of emotion while embracing in the middle of the Octagon on Saturday night.

Burns had blood and tears running down his face. Some of their cornermen behind them were trying not to cry.

Usman stopped Burns, his former teammate, via TKO at 34 seconds in the third round to defend his UFC welterweight title in the main event of UFC 258 in Las Vegas.

Usman landed a right hand as he was switching stances to floor Burns, then slammed Burns with punches on the ground until referee Herb Dean pulled him off.

“Gilbert is a guy that I’ve known from the start,” Usman said in his postfight interview. “I love him. This one was tough for me to deal with.”

Usman picked up his 13th straight win, surpassing legend Georges St-Pierre for the most consecutive wins in UFC welterweight history. Only Anderson Silva has won more than 13 straight fights in UFC history, winning 16 in a row from 2006 to 2012. Usman is tied with six other fighters with 13 consecutive wins.

Usman and Burns were teammates in South Florida since 2012, first with the Blackzilians and most recently with Sanford MMA. Usman departed for Colorado to train under coach Trevor Wittman last year after the initial fight with Burns was scheduled for July. But Burns tested positive for COVID-19 and withdrew from that bout. Henri Hooft, the longtime head coach for both Usman and Burns, did not corner either man and said he would not even watch the fight.

Usman said he “almost started bawling” when the two fighters embraced in the Octagon after the fight.

“I know what that loss feels like,” he said. “I have a loss on my record. I’m not perfect. I know what that felt like. I knew how bad he wanted this. … Having to be the one to do that to him, it almost broke me in there.”

Kamaru Usman rolled to his 13th straight win, breaking Georges St-Pierre’s record for most consecutive victories in UFC welterweight history.

The bout had major implications outside of the personal story. Coming in, ESPN had Usman ranked No. 5 in the world in its pound-for-pound MMA rankings. In the welterweight division, ESPN has Usman ranked No. 1 and Burns at No. 5.

Burns rocked Usman twice early with huge right hands. But Usman hung in through a tumultuous first round. He then took over in the second, working a beautiful jab and stymieing Burns’ power and explosiveness. Usman’s striking looked better than ever, as he switched stances and landed with power from each one.

In the second round, Usman dropped Burns twice, the second time with a jab. In the third, it was a right hand that resembled a jab that put Burns on his butt before Usman pounced and finished on the ground.

“I am the best on the planet for a reason,” Usman said in his postfight interview. “Y’all, everybody else, you better put some f—ing respect on my name. … I’m here to stay.”

Burns said he made a “mistake” trying to finish Usman in the opening round.

“I know I can end any one of these guys. But in order to become a champion, I have to be disciplined,” Burns said. “I saw he was hurt. I kind of started loading up so much [on my punches]. The key for me was to keep doing what I was doing. Stay light on my feet. … Me, I was overexcited. He stayed disciplined. That’s what happened.”

UFC 258 was held with COVID-19 protocols in place at the UFC Apex, a facility across from the UFC’s Las Vegas corporate campus. It was the promotion’s first domestic pay-per-view card of the year.

Usman (18-1) has been champion since beating Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 in March 2019. He has had three successful title defenses. The Nigeria native, who grew up in Texas, has never lost in the UFC.

“He’s the whole package,” UFC president Dana White said. “The guy’s got the whole thing. It’s just, when are people gonna notice?”

White added: “The kid is the real deal, man. For the people that know, for the people that actually know about fighting, they know this win tonight was a big deal.”

Usman, 33, was coming off a unanimous-decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 251 last July. Afterward, Usman called out Masvidal, who took that fight on six days’ notice. Usman said that “it’s not done” with Masvidal.

“He keeps running his mouth,” Usman said. “If he’s gonna talk, step in here and see me.”

White said Usman has “a lot of options,” but if Usman and Masvidal want to fight — and if the fans are interested — White said the promotion would consider it.

“If you look at all the guys that are lined up that he has to fight next, and he keeps doing what he’s doing, we’re gonna all pop our heads up one day and we’re gonna start talking GOAT,” White said. “It’s not just how you’re fighting and if you’re winning, it’s who you’re fighting, too.”

Masvidal’s co-manager Malki Kawa wrote Saturday night on Twitter that Masvidal wants to coach opposite Usman on the next season of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

Burns (19-4) had won six in a row coming in, the most recent a unanimous-decision win over Woodley last May. The Brazil native is 4-1 since moving up to welterweight from lightweight in 2019.

Burns, 34, is a multiple-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion with power in his hands. He was trying to become the first Brazilian to win the UFC welterweight title.

“I’m the varsity guy,” Usman said. “My fight IQ is different. It’s different when you’re in the gym with me. But when you get in here, it’s a different ballgame. I’m a whole ‘nother savage.

By Ayodele Oni

Chairman Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum (NGF), Dr Kayode Fayemi, has said the carnage in Ibadan, Oyo state capital was avoidable.

Dr Fayemi, who is  Ekiti state Governor, condemned the violent clash between some Yoruba and Hausa traders in Shasha market, Ibadan, at the weekend.

The violent clash had reportedly led to the death of some residents, destruction of properties and displacement of people in the area.

Already, Oyo state Governor, Mr Seyi Makinde, has imposed a curfew in the affected area, as part of measures to curb the crisis.

Dr Fayemi, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, on Saturday, called on the warring traders to sheathe their swords and embrace peace.

He sympathised with the Government and people of Oyo State, especially families that have lost lives and properties during the violent clash.

He also commended Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde for taking immediate steps in arresting the carnage, including the declaration of curfew.

Governor Fayemi said regardless of the cause of the disagreement that led to the mayhem, a peaceful resolution of the conflict remains the best option.

He urged the Yoruba and Hausa traders in the area, and in different parts of the country, to see themselves as brothers and partners in progress, adding that disagreements should not always be allowed to degenerate into violence, maiming and killing.

The  NGF Chairman warned that the Shasha crisis, if not curtailed, could ignite pockets of crises in different parts of the country, adding that it would be disastrous for the country.

“We do not need any act of violence leading to unnecessary death of citizens.

“Now is the time for the leadership of various ethnic nationalities, trading groups and the security agencies to halt the orgy of violence in Shasha area and work towards ensuring peace in different parts of the country.

“We will enjoy enduring peace and progress through dialogue, mutual respect and understanding for one another. Violence and attendant death and destruction would only spell doom for the country.

“While commending Governor Makinde for his timely intervention in the crisis, we also express our sympathy to families of the victims as well as those who have lost properties and businesses during the crisis.”, Fayemi added.

#OccupyLekkiTollGate: ‘Hold President Buhari, Sanwo-Olu, IGP Adamu, Responsible For Any Harm Against Protesters”– Timi Frank Alleges |The Source

By Akinwale Kasali

Following the arrest of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos, an activist, Comrade Timi Frank, on Saturday, 13th February, 2021, urged Nigerian youths not to be intimidated  by the move by President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to suppress their demand for justice.

Frank, in a statement in Abuja, condemned the deployment of Security agents by the Lagos and  Federal Governments in a bid to abort the protest.

“This massive deployment of security forces who are now unleashing terror against protesters at the Lekki Tollgate is a shame to Buhari, Sanwo-Olu and IGP Adamu – who are out to protect the business interests of their cronies and benefactors.

“We have seen policemen brutalising, arresting and suppressing innocent youths exercising their rights and this is unacceptable,” Frank said.

He urged the IGP to immediately recall the anti-riot policemen he deployed to the Lekki Tollgate and avoid being used against Nigerian youths by politicians who are out to protect their private businesses.

He urged Adamu not to act like the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, who, allegedly, abused his office for personal gains and to satisfy his political godfathers.

“IGP Adamu and the Police hierarchy will be held accountable should anything untoward happen to the protesters”, Frank warned.

He wondered how the Federal and Lagos State Governments could mobilize so much policemen to stop peaceful protesters yet, cannot deploy troops to the nation’s forests to protect poor farmers and innocent Nigerians from bandits and insurgents who daily kill, maim and kidnap them for ransom.

He accused Buhari and Sanwo-Olu of insensitivity and impunity over their move to stop peaceful youths who are exercising their constitutional rights to demand for justice.

“Buhari and Sanwo-Olu are using the police for selfish gain and to protect the business investments of their political cronies.

“This is a shame on the part of the Nigeria Police Force and the Buhari administration.

“I call on the Inspector General of Police whose tenure was recently unjustly extended not to see this #OccupyLekkiTollGate as a payback time to demonstrate his loyalty and thankfulness to the powers by using policemen to brutally attack peaceful protesters making genuine demand on their elected leaders.

“The intimidation and oppression against peaceful youths exercising their right to peaceful protests will not work this time as the people deserve the right to call out their elected leaders whenever they feel inclined to do so.

“Despite this harassment, arrests, intimidation and oppression by the police , I urge Nigerians not to be intimidated by this show of force but to come out and exercise their rights as citizens.

“I also want to apprise our youths that like-minds in the Diaspora are currently brainstorming in Washington DC, over the likely outcome from the ongoing #OccupyLekkiTollGate protests and the unfortunate action of the authorities.

“Be assured that those who took part in killings at the #LekkiTollGateMassacre and those presently committing crimes against protesters will not go unpunished as they will definitely have they day at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“I urge Nigerians to remain steadfast and continue with the peaceful protests to demand justice for #LekkiTollgateMassacre.”

Lekki Toll Gate

By Akinwale Kasali

As planned, the #OccupyLekkiTollgate protesters stormed the Lekki Toll Gate to protest the reopening of the  Lekki Toll Gate by the Lagos State Government.

Expectedly, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, carried out his threats and warning that there would be heavy security presence at the scene to stop the arrest

Youths, however remained defiant, as the Police arrested early birds at the Lekki Toll Gate.

Arrested at the scene was popular Social Media Comedian, Mr. Macaroni, popularly known to his fans as Mr. Freaky Freaky, Debo and You Are Doing Well. He was dragged into the Black Maria of the Police and his phone seized.

He recorded a video as he was being dragged into the Black Maria, before his phone was collected by the police.

The EtiI-Osa Bar Forum on Legal and Aid Clinic Situation Room for #OccupyLekki Tollgate Situation Room has condemned the arrest of early arrivals at the protest ground by officers of the Lagos State Special Taskforce.

Chairman of the Eti Osa Bar Forum, Oladotun Hassan, Esq and his Secretary, Barrister Ayo Ademiluyi condemned, in its entirety, the conduct of the Rapid Response Squad and Lagos State Special Taskforce of the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Police Force who laid a siege on the Lekki Toll Gate since Friday,  12th February, 2021, foisting an atmosphere of intimatidation on the ordinary citizens of their jurisdiction.

“We hereby give notice that we will proceed by way of fundamental rights action against the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu and Commissioner of Police of Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu as well as the Governor of Lagos State and Attorney General of Lagos State for the breach of the fundamental rights of citizens within our jurisdiction, which includes but not limited to restrictions of right to freedom of movement.

“In the meantime, we call for immediate release of the arrested protesters.

“We are now seized of the particulars of the persons arrested by officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force to wit ; Mr. Macaroni , the “Fantabulous” Comedian, Moshood Adebola Oshunfurewa, Adekambi Kayode Olamide, Damilare Adenola, Ayegbusi Samuel and Paul TERKUMA.

“We are also seized of the facts that they were subjected to harrasment and seizure of the phones.

“We hereby reiterate our appeals for calls to be made to  the phone line of CP HAKEEM ODUMOSU, to wit, +23408065668179”, the Group demanded.

Both the Federal and State Governments had asked that the protest be jettisoned, warning that given the monumental loss of lives and destruction of public and private properties during the earlier protests, no other such protests will be allowed to hold.

Ortom Lashes Bauchi Governor, Says Utterences Disappointing |The Source

By Akinwale Kasali

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has described the comments by his Bauchi State counterpart, Bala Mohammed as disappointing.

Mohammed had blamed   Ortom for what he termed ‘negative perception of Fulani herders’ when he spoke on the current security situation in the country.

A statement released by Terveer Akase,  Chief Press  Secretary to Governor Ortom,  said while his Principal will not want to join issues with the Bauchi State Governor, he finds it shocking that a colleague who took the oath of office as he also did, to protect and preserve the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, now takes the lead in violating provisions of the same Constitution by calling for lawlessness.

He points out that the most shocking part of Governor Bala Mohammed’s statement was where he defended herdsmen for bearing arms saying “they have no option than to carry AK47 because the society and the government are not protecting them”.

Governor Ortom wonders which section of the law the Bauchi State Governor cited to support herdsmen’s free movement around the country with sophisticated weapons.

He recalls that it was the same Governor Mohammed who once said on national television that a Fulani man is a global citizen and, therefore, does not need a visa to come to Nigeria, and that the forests belong to herdsmen.

Ortom wondered whether his friend and colleague in Bauchi State knows a thing or two about the horrendous activities of herders in parts of the country to warrant the emotional defence and justification that he has repeatedly put forward in their favour.

“In reference to Governor Mohammed’s comment that there are Benue people who are freely doing business in Bauchi and elsewhere, Governor Ortom states that Benue indigenes in Bauchi have been law abiding and do not carry arms to attack their hosts, noting that Fulani as well as many other Nigerians residing in Benue who respect laws of the land also live peacefully with their hosts.

Governor Ortom says his administration has not driven away any law abiding Nigerian in Benue State.

“The Governor finds it unfortunate that those who are trusted with the people’s mandate and should ordinarily uphold truth and justice, have chosen to mislead the country. He stresses the need for leaders to be cautious and retrace their steps which are capable of leading the country to anarchy”.

How APC Leaders Shamed, Rejected Fani-Kayode; And Shut Him Up |The Source

0
Fani Kayode and Yahaya Bello and APC Chair

By Adesina Soyooye

Was it a set-up? Or, why would the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, drag former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, FFK, in the mud the way it did? Why would they put him in a ship, and abandon him mid-sea? Was it planned to totally disgrace him, shame him, and finally shut him up?

It seems all of the above are correct.

Here is the story of how FFK dropped from the Olympian height, into the abyss.

His journey started with the publication of photographs which, at once, shocked and took most people unawares a couple of days ago. Many were dazed. Fani-Kayode’s party, the People’s Democratic Party, was dumbfounded.

The splashed photographs were those of the National Chairman of the APC  Transitional Committee/ Governor of Yobe State, Mal Mai Buni, the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, and FFK.

The shock that accompanied the photographs forced FFK to explain what he was doing with both men. They are of the APC, a party FFK had maligned in every way possible. He had called the the President, Muhammdu Buhari and the leaders of the party, every choice negative names he could remember. And had dubbed the party, among other names, “Almajiri People Congress.”

So, Fani-Kayode needed to explain. He owed that to many people.Among other things, he said he went to discuss the state of the nation with them. He said he also went to discuss party affairs with them. And that he was discussing across political party lines. The explanation was weak. Nobody believed him.

In the PDP, mum was the word. In the APC, red flags were hoisted. The first to react was the President’s Special Assistant on New Media, Ahmad Bashir. He said the plan by FFK to join the party will not work; that party leaders will not welcome him; that President  Buhari will not accept him either.

Then came the most devastating reaction. It came from the Director General of the Progressive Governor’s Forum, PGF, Salihu Lukman. He said FFK would lower the standards of the party, and make it a laughing stock. He said FFK is like dirt. He would stain the party. He reminded the party leadership of some of the degrading things FFK had said about the Party, Mr President, and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. And many more.

But the next day, Governor Bello threw two bombs. He revealed that FFK came to BEG him to be admitted into the APC.  Note the word beg. The clincher, he told the crowd that FFK has indeed dumped the PDP, and defected to the APC.

Again, FFK offered a weak response. He said even though he was in discussions, he had not dumped the  PDP. Many people responded: “story-story. It is his stock in trade.”  If not true, they asked, why would Bello publicly announce it?

Bashir, a guy with a satirical sense of humour welcomed FFK with a one-liner: “Welcome to the Party of Almajiri People Congress.” The joke was not lost on anybody.

For two days, nothing was heard about, and from Bello, FFK and the APC. Well, until Friday, when Lukeman, in a rather celebratory tone, issued a statement that FFK has been rejected by the Leadership of the APC. That the Party has refused to admit him. That the party was not moved by his “beg-beg”, and that his entrance has been stalled.

Lukeman: “Again, that we are, as a party, debating the issue of who should join our party or not represent the qualitative difference between the APC and PDP.

“If it were PDP, once the National Chairman of the party act on a matter and backed by a serving governor, members can only grumble.

“I am proud to have my voice guaranteed and affirmed by my leaders in APC. As an employee of Governors, it has been a privileged opportunity to speak out openly on matters within the purview of leadership initiative.

“Rather than my leaders, including our Governors, relating to me as a subordinate who should only take instructions, they recognise, and respect my views as a loyal member of the party.

“The issue of Mr Fani-Kayode’s drifted attempt to join the APC is a clear instance of attempts to manipulate some of our leaders into accepting membership of someone who ought not to have been considered a member of our party.

“If that was the case in the past, it is better late than never to correct such a mistake.

“As party members, we were able to rise up to the challenge of engaging our leaders. Fortunately, we are able to gain the respect of our leaders and surely, moving forward, issues of who qualifies to be a member of our party will be clarified unambiguously.

“Maybe this could challenge the PDP and other parties in Nigeria to begin to address issues related to their failings.”

It is surprising that the deal was not sealed before FFK took those photographs. Many hold the opinion that he fell cheaply into the trap of the APC. It is even more surprising, they say,  that Bello announced, publicly, FFK’s membership of the APC, without clearing with the leadership of the party, especially, Mr President.

Or, was it a well- planned set-up? If it is, political watchers say it is good for the system. It will instill discipline, they say. They argue that one  cannot call a party a congregation of fools today, and tomorrow, call it a congregation of wise people, all because one has suddenly seen a brighter political future.

What the APC has done is to, for now, shut FFK  up. If he calls the party and its members names now, they will say it is because they rejected him when he came cap in hand to beg them to allow him become one of them.

Many say nobody will believe what he says again. They also say even his party, the PDP, will now look at him with suspicion. For the first time, FFK’s political migration has failed him.

A devastated admirer of his told this magazine: “It is such a shame. He should quit politics. This ill-advised and ill thought-out movement has finished him.”
