Afenifere Chieftain, Adebanjo, Asks Buhari To Quit, Slams Youths |The Source

By Ayodele Oni

Acting National Leader of Yoruba socio political organization, Afenifere, has described Nigerian youths as failures and a disappointment to older generation.

Pa Adebanjo castigated the youths for failing the Country saying: “The younger generation has failed the Country. The Country was not as bad as this when we were demonstrating for self-governance.

He was speaking during the 95th birthday of the immediate past leader of the group, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, and the dedication of a Church in his honor at Iju/Ita Ogbolu in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Pa Adebanjo, stated that “they want the old men to fight their cause for them. Why should people like me be in the trenches at 93 and Baba Fasoranti at 95. Where are those in their 40s and 30s?

“When we were at their age, we were in the street, at Lagos, London, everywhere and in the University.

“You are PDP in the morning, APC in the afternoon and SDP in the evening, and they say they are young, the youths should be ashamed of themselves.”

He, however, expressed optimism that there is light at the end of the tunnel, saying “as a Christian, I still have hope.

“If Nigerians are conscious of their right, and they know what to do, but where is the demonstration in the country that the Buhari government must go?”

To end carnage, kidnapping and anditry in the country, the Yoruba leader restated the call on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign or step aside.

Chief Ayo Adebanjo, pointed out that the Buhari led Government has incapacitated the Country and has failed to address the increasing wave of insecurity and downturn of the economy.

Adebanjo said that with the series of challenges confronting the country, President Buhari ought to have resigned voluntarily long ago .

According to him, the President has failed the people of the country, saying there is no better time to leave but now.

”I have told them that in a better and civilized country he should have gone long ago. If he has self-respect, he should have gone because everything has  failed.

“What is he presiding over? Is it over corruption, security, education.? Law and order have broken down in the country for the past three years. It is only because Nigerians are over tolerance of despots, that is why he is still there.”

Insecurity: Lai Mohammed Optimistic Of Government Halting It |The Source

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration has promised Nigerians to remain calm, as Insurgency and Banditry will soon become history.

For months now, the high level of Insecurity in the nation has become worrisome, as kidnapping, Banditry, rogue herdsmen and insurgency are the order of the day.

However, contrary to the widespread belief that the Federal Government is overwhelmed with the escalating insecurity,  Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, at a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday, said the Government and its security agencies have the wherewithal in terms of personnel and fire power to crush bandits, insurgents, criminals and other enemies of the Nigerian state.

He said, “It is no longer news that our dear nation is facing security challenges. However, I have read comments saying the Federal Government is overwhelmed and doesn’t have a clue as to how to tackle the challenges. Some have even gone as far as suggesting a truncation of the democratic order, a clearly treasonable stance.

“Well, I am here today to assure all Nigerians that while the government acknowledges the  security challenges we face at this time, from terrorism to kidnaping, banditry and farmer-herder conflict, it is definitely not overwhelmed and indeed it has the wherewithal, as you will see in the days ahead, to confront the challenges headlong and restore law and order, peace and security”.

2023 World Cup: Criticisms Trail Pairing Of Nigeria, Ghana, In Qualification Series |The Source

FIFA Women World Cup 2023

By Akinwale Kasali

The Super Falcons of Nigeria and the Black Queens of Ghana are the Super football powerhouse in African Women Football.

Both teams have consistently qualified for the FIFA Female World Cup tournament as the leading African teams.

Sadly, one of these football powerhouses will not be at the 2023 FIFA Women World Cup to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand following the pairing of the two teams to square up against each other in the first round of the Confederation of African Football, CAF, Qualifiers for the mundial next month.

Criticisms have, however, trailed the draws made at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, Tuesday, with soccer Stars, Ex-Internationals, Football analysts and enthusiasts are slamming CAF for such act.

Reacting, South African star and CAF’s Women Footballer of  The Year  2018, Thembi Kgatlana  berated the CAF for pairing Nigeria against Ghana in the first round of qualifiers for the 2022 African Women’s Cup of Nations.

The 2022 AWCON serves as qualifiers for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The Nine-time Champions, Super Falcons has an age-long rivalry with their West African neighbours, Ghana, meaning that it will be a titanic battle.

Both legs will be held between June 7 and 15, with Falcons hosting the first leg, before travelling to Ghana for the reverse fixture.

Winners of the tie face the winners between Niger and Ivory Coast in another round of qualifiers between October 19 and 28.

The winner between Nigeria and Ghana will face emerging force Ivory Coast, which is highly favoured to beat Niger.

Kgatlana is, however, infuriated with this development, as one of the two giants in African Football will not make it to the AWCON and the Women’s World Cup.

“The draw was coming alright until they announced that Ghana will play Nigeria,” Banyana Banyana striker Kgatlana tweeted.

Stella Mbachu, ex-International, also questioned the criteria used by CAF to arrive at the draw.

“CAF did not do it well, they should have done it so that the two teams will have the chance of being at the AWCON, to make the competition more interesting. Putting them with Nigeria now, one of them must drop.

“What this means is that at the AWCON, we will have weaker teams competing,” Mbachu said.

Football analysts and renowned Sports  Journalist, Colin Udoh, took a dig at CAF, saying the football body don’t value Women’s Football.

In a tweet, Udoh wrote; “Everyone involved in this at CAF should be ashamed of themselves, to pit two of the historically and current strongest teams in Africa against each other in the first round of qualifying, does a huge and disgraceful disservice to the African women’s game.”

“If ever proof was needed that CAF does not rate the women’s game, this right here, is it.Out of a sense of evil, I hope Ghana and Nigeria get knocked out, followed by Cameroon and let CAF have its AWCON.

“The AWCON needs eyeballs. Games like those involving the likes of Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, South Africa playing against each other is what draws those eyeballs. But no, self sabotage must be an intrinsic part of the CAF DNA,” Udoh added on Twitter.

Nigeria – who are the highest ranked African country in the world – have won the AWCON a record nine times and have been at every Women’s World Cup since inception in 1991, while Ghana have been to the Women’s World Cup three times – 1999, 2003 and 2007.

The Black Queens are the fourth most successful country at the AWCON, emerging runners-up three times and third another three times.

In the same vein, Femi Olusesi, a football enthusiast says that CAF has done a great disservice to itself.

“We are just mere jokers in Africa. How can you pair the two best team in the continent together at such stage. It is not done anywhere. Who will hoist the continent’s flag at the Showpiece on 2023.

“Even with the powerhouses, Africa have been a shadow of itself, now Fringe and unexposed and inexperience teams will represent African and the continent will be disgraced is what pleases CAF.

“In Europe, they will never do such. We still need a long way to go. This is purely disservice to ourselves”, Olusesi concluded.

2023 Presidency: Again, MURIC Makes Case for Tinubu

Bola Tinubu
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Controversial leader of the Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC Professor Ishaq Akintola has said that the 2023 presidential ticket must be given to a Yoruba muslim. His comment came amidst suggestion that the group is supporting the presidential ambition of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former Lagos state Governor and All Progressives Congress, APC.

Akintola’s comment, therefore, many say, did not come as a surprise considering that the group had earlier in the year thrown its weight behind the yet-to-be declared presidential ambition of the former governor.

The MURIC leader said in January that “It is on record that the Yoruba have complained bitterly about marginalisation. This has resulted in the emergence of separatist groups calling for the establishment of Oduduwa Republic. However, the reality staring the Yoruba in the face today is the complex nature of the process of separation, vis-a-vis the proximity of a big opportunity of gaining political power in 2023 through an already well known democratic process.

“Fortunately, the Yoruba do not have to search too far as a former governor of Lagos State and leader of the ruling party has shown interest. Here is a candidate that brandishes impeccable pedigree. Nobody can deny his political dexterity. He is known to have fought and won several political battles. The best the Yoruba can do for the region is to rally behind this candidate and ensure that he clinches power in 2023.”

Akintola in a statement on Monday, said the presidential candidate for the 2023 must be a yoruba muslim, in a another veiled reference to Tinubu, according to watchers of recent politics in the country.  In fact, the don dismissed plans by some politicians in the country, among them former President olusegun Obasanjo to draft Akinwumi Adesina, a Christian and president of the African Development Bank, AFDB, into the 2023 presidential race, as a waste of time.

The professor said no Yoruba Christina had ruled the country since the return to constitutional democracy in 1999, that one of them should be given opportunity to take a shot at the presidency.

According to MURIC: “Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo is reportedly making attempts to draft the current president of the African Development Bank (ADB), Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, into the 2023 presidential race. We object to this move. Obasanjo wants to waste all the efforts put in place by the Nigerian government to get Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina to that continental position.

“We remind the former president that as a Yoruba Christian, he has led Nigeria twice. He spent 3 years and 258 days as a military head of state (1976 – 1979) and another 8 years as a civilian president (1999 – 2007). Two other Yoruba Christians have also occupied Aso Rock. Chief Earnest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan was the interim head of state from 26th August 1993 to 17th November, 1993. The current vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, is also a Yoruba Christian.”

He said former President Obasanjo must abandon his plan to drag the AfDB president to the race.

Akintola said “Obasanjo’s attempt to drag Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina who is also a Yoruba Christian into the presidential race negates the principles of fairness, justice and equity. It is an attempt to rob Yoruba Muslims of the presidential slot and it violates a cardinal principle of democracy, namely, inclusiveness.

Prof. Ishaq Akintola - MURIC
Akintola Supports Tunubu’s Ambition

“It is an open secret that Yoruba Muslims who form the majority of the population in the South West are being denied their Allah-given fundamental human rights. This has led to complaints and court cases initiated by Muslims across Yorubaland over political and religious persecution. Yoruba Muslims are at the receiving end of deprivation of civil liberties. It is our contention that another Yoruba Christian presidency will usher in another opportunity for Christian hegemony and the marginalisation, stigmatisation, repression and persecution of Yoruba Muslims.

“Let Obasanjo tell us how many Yoruba Muslims were ministers in his administration. Even in Kwara State which is also a predominantly Muslim territory, Obasanjo picked two Christians as ministers (C. O. Adebayo and Funke Doyin). But he could not extend such ‘luxury’ to Yoruba Muslims in the South West.

“MURIC rejects this grand design to keep Muslims in Yorubaland in perpetual bondage. There are many Yoruba Muslims who are eminently qualified for the post of president. We also believe that the interest of the Yoruba people will be best served if they will channel their grievances towards ensuring that a Yoruba man emerges president instead of pursuing a separatist agenda that may lead them nowhere.

“We advise ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo to relax his grip on the Nigerian jugular vein. He should stop pushing Yoruba Muslims to the background. Christians are not the only human beings in Yorubaland. Fair sharing spreads goodwill. Monopoly generates rancour and ill-feeling. There is no true democracy where there is no inclusiveness. The political party does not matter to us. What is important is that the next Yoruba presidential ticket must go to a Yoruba Muslim in the name of fairness, justice and equity.”

Buhari Sends Delegation To Visits Ghana Over Traders Conflict |The Source

Finally, the Federal Government has decided to take action on the lingering diplomatic crisis brewing between it and  Ghana over the alleged maltreatment of Nigerian traders by Ghanaian authorities.

Agency reports indicate that President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that a Ministerial delegation be sent to Ghana to resolve the issue.

“The delegation will be led by Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, according to a statement issued on Monday by the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media, Mr Ifedayo Sayo”, News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports.

Sayo noted that “the delegation, which would be made up of relevant stakeholders, would also engage in further dialogue with Ghanaian authorities with a view to finding a lasting solution to the problem.:

The delegation would undertake the visit between May 31 and June 1, 2021”.

For several years running, Nigerian traders and Ghanaian authorities have been having altercations about tax, levies and related issues. The Nigerian traders complainof maltreatments by the Ghanaian Authorities who, they claim, molests them at the slightest provocations, closing their shops by force. The traders had claimed that the authorities had imposed regulations and traders were required to pay one million dollars for business registration.

Things came to a head when Nigerian shops were forcefully locked up without warning with demands that they produce evidence of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council’s (GIPC) registration. Incidentally, this peaked at the time the Federal government had decided to close its borders to curb smuggling, which adversely effected Ghana’s economy, fuelling speculations that it may have been an indirect protest at the closure of the borders.

Nigerians have since been crying for help, appealing to the Federal Government to intervene. Apart from some diplomatic statements by Abike  Dabiri-Erewa, the DG of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Government has not done much in terms of real intervention.

Ndigbo Lagos, Tackles Joe Igbokwe, Says He Is Framing The Igbo Without Proof |The Source

0

“Some malevolent minds may take advantage of Mr Joe Igbokwe’s recklessness and unsubstantiated rethorics to spread mistrust, cause disunity and escalate mischief in such manner and disguise, as may cause fingers to be wrongly pointed at the Igbo in Lagos.”

By Gideon Njoku

Joe Igbokwe, an Aide to  Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State is in trouble with his people, the Igbo.

Igbokwe, a staunch member  of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and an ardent loyalist of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, has been in the inner circle and cabinet of the Lagos State Government from the Tinubu era as Governor, till date.

He says he is the Leader of the Igbo in the APC, a position he, a few months ago, struggled for with Hon Idimogu, an Imo State indigene in the Lagos State House of Assembly. But that struggle for position was an exercise in futility on the part of Idimogu.

In the Lagos APC, Igbokwe is as constant as the Northern star, and the recognised leader of the Igbo APC. He is in the inner circle, he claims.

His problem with his people now stems from a viral video statement/message he sent to the Igbo. To make it trickle down, he spoke in Igbo language.

A summary of what said:

Igbokwe said that Igbo youths were planning to attack Lagos; that they plan to replicate what is happening in the South-east in Lagos – the torching of Police Commands and installations, the killing of Security Agents in their scores, including soldiers, and unprecedented violence;  the destruction of infrastructure.

Igbokwe had no evidence as such, except he claims that having lived very long in Lagos, having worked in, and with Lagos State  Government from 1999 till date, and being entrenched in markets, the Church and more, in Lagos, he has credible sources. He meanders everywhere in Lagosians.

So, he warned the Igbo youths involved in the alleged plan to shelve it as would be suicidal. He asked them to restrict their attacks to their Zone, South-east. “Destroy your Zone,  if you so desire, but leave Lagos alone”. He warns that Lagos would be their waterloo, as those who own Lagos know of their plans, and are waiting for them. He pointed accusing fingers at IPOB.

He also warned against the foolishness of attacking Lagos, comparing it to one cutting one’s nose to spite one’s face, thus reminding them of the huge investment   of the Igbo which will, automatically, be destroyed in revenge. “Why do you want to destroy your own people?”, he asked.

Inexplicably, he said the Yoruba are holding the Igbo responsible for the unprecedented destruction in Lagos, during the #EndSARS protest.

But, he had no proof to support his allegations, especially, since the Panel set up by the Government has not handed over its report.

Igbokwe, also, called out Igbo Leaders, and wondered why Traditional Rulers, Igbo elders and Religious Leaders are keeping quiet in the face of the planned attack on Lagos by Igbo youths, and the destruction of the South-east.

But stung by such serious allegations against the Igbo, by their own, apparently, without any shred of evidence, except hear-say, Ndigbo Lagos, the  Umbrella  Body of all Igbo Organisations in Lagos, has described Igbokwe as an embarrassment, and dismissed his allegations and assumptions as reckless and irresponsible.

In a strongly worded statement signed by its Director of Communications and Strategy, Prince Tony Eze, dated May 10, the Association, stopping short of calling Igbokwe, at once, a saboteur and betrayer of his people, said Igbokwe’s allegations were  “mischievous, false, baseless  and inciting.”

They wondered how Igbokwe could put the #EndSARS destruction on the Igbo when investigations were still on. They also wondered how he knew those responsible for the violence and killings in the South-east when the Governors from the Zone, and Security Agencies said investigations were still on.

They asked Security Agencies to invite Igbokwe so as to get some more information from him on the plans to attack Lagos since he seems to have knowledge of it.

Following, the full text of the statement by Ndigbo Lagos, in reaction to Igbokwe’s damning warning and allegations.

NDIGBO LAGOS REFUTAL TO JOE IGBOKWE’S INCENDIARY FALSE CLAIMS

“We, at Ndigbo Lagos, have just listened to the video making the rounds in the Social Media today 9th May 2021.

:In the said video, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, a Political appointee of Lagos State Government and Special Adviser Drainage and Water Resources,  claimed insider knowledge of a clandestine plot by some Igbo youths who he believes are IPOB members, to kill, to burn down Police stations and public infrastructure in Lagos.

“NDIGBO LAGOS the umbrella body of all Igbo organizations in Lagos, wish to state as follows:

“1. That we are saddened by the claims of Mr. Igbokwe, which we believe are mischievous, false, baseless and inciting.

“2.  That the Governments of the South Eastern States of Nigeria and various Security Agencies in the country have initiated investigations to unravel the persons behind the killings and destruction of properties in the South East, and we believe strongly in their competence and ability to unravel the masterminds and bring them to justice.

“3. That, as usual, with such serious investigations the Police and other Security Agencies expect support through information from responsible citizens of which Joe Igbokwe, being a government insider, is very much aware of ,and in a good position to comply with.

“4. That rather than do this, Mr. Igbokwe irresponsibly went to town with his personal conclusions on who these perpetrators are and what evil they are planning for Lagos, notwithstanding the ongoing official investigations. This probably goes to suggest that Mr. Igbokwe knows more than the ordinary eyes could see, and should be invited by the relevant security agency to clarify his source which he claims is credible.

“5. That the Lagos State Government had initiated and conducted investigation on what happened during the EndSars protest, and are well equipped with relevant information on the perpetrators of that heinous act.

“6. That the Igbo were not the cause of the Biafran war, and have no intention to engage into any acts as may suggest any intention of such in the foregoing circumstance.

“7. That we condemn, in clear terms, the killings going on all over the country, including in the South-east, and sympathize with the families of officers and civilians, who have had to endure the loss of their dear ones. We pray their soul to rest perfect in the bossom of our Lord!

“8. We wish to reiterate that Igbo youths are NOT killers, neither are they arsonists, but are positively recognized as hardworking contributors to the development of our Country. We have been victims rather than perpetrators of killings, burnings and looting in Nigeria.

“9. That it has become expedient for us to issue this rebuttal, in the light of the hightened tension in the Country, being convinced that some malevolent minds may take advantage of Mr. Joe Igbokwe’s recklessness with unsubstantiated rethorics to spread mistrust, cause disunity and escalate mischief in such manner and disguise, as may cause fingers to be wrongly pointed at the Igbo in Lagos.

“We, therefore, call on Mr. Joe Igbokwe to desist from reaching hasty conclusions, and spreading of falsehood.

  1. We enjoin Ndigbo across Lagos to go about their normal buisness. And should not engage in any unlawful acts that would endanger the good relationship we enjoy with the people of Lagos State.

“11. Finally, we want to remind Mr. Igbokwe that respect for the elderly is one of the cornerstones of Igbo values and civilized behavior. Hence, we call upon him to retrace his steps and apologize to Chief Mbazulike Amechi for the unconscionable remarks he made against him.”

Igbokwe is yet to issue a response to the Ndigbo statement.

The Presidency has confirmed reports of an attempt by armed robbers to burgle the residence of the Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari, early Monday morning.

Gambari, a former Nigeria’s Permanent Representatives to the United Nations, UN lives in his official residence, close Aso Villa, the nation’s seat of power.

Confirming the report that some hoodlums tried to rob the President’s Chief of Staff, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said in a tweet that the suspected criminals tried to break into the residence in the wee hours of Monday.

Shehu said in his verified official twitter handle that, “The Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari has confirmed that there ‘was a foolish attempt’ to burgle his residence at 3:00am this morning but it turned out to be unsuccessful. Professor Gambari, whose house is on a street next to the Villa has assured that there is nothing to worry about from the incident.”

Gambari: His Residence Almost Burgled

A news platform, Peoples Gazette, had reported that armed robbers invaded Aso Rock and emptied Gambari’s residence as well as the residence of an Administration Officer in the Presidency, Abubakar Maikano.

“The robbers took away as much as possible from both places,” a security officer that confirmed the incident said. “What is more unfortunate is that no one has been arrested,” the news platform had reported.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has recently come under fire over the escalating insecurity in the country, with many losing confidence in the ability of Buhari, a retired military commander, who won the 2015 and 2019 general elections with the promise of ending the kidnappings, killings, banditry, and other crimes in the country,” the online news platform reported.

COVID 19 Scare: FG Orders Nationwide Curfew

By Fola James

Fears over the resurgence of COVID 19 has forced the Federal Government to re-introduced a nationwide 12am to 4am curfew, as part of efforts to curtail the global pandemic that has killed millions of people across the world.

Lagos state and other states in the country had recently directed that normalcy returns after reduction in the number of infections across the country. But the fear that the virus could rebound has been spreading in the last few days, particularly at a time that India is dealing with the second wave of the pandemic, with thousands deaths being recorded daily.

The Buhari administration is trying to prevent a resurgence of the pandemic, according to the National Incident Manager, Mukhtar Mohammed, who said at a press briefing of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 in Abuja, that the curfew would take effect from midnight on Monday, May 10.

Mohammed also disclosed that effective from from Tuesday, night clubs, gyms, and others would remain closed across the country till further notice. It, however, remains sketchy if the 36 state governments and FCT have been consulted and their buy-in on the issue received.

He also stated that gatherings of religious groups and weddings among others have been reduced to 50 percent attendance, while official engagements, meetings, and conferences should continue to hold virtually.

He said hotels are to remain open while adhering to all non-pharmaceutical interventions while schools are to deploy the use of antigen-based rapid tests as recommended in the guidelines by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, while indoor recreational facilities and gyms are to close until June 11 when the situation will be reviewed while non-contact outdoor sports such as gulf, Polo and tennis among others are not affected.

Mohammed said, “Further to these recommendations and effective from 01hours of Tuesday, May 11, 2021, this Phase IV of the phased restriction of movement shall come into effect.

“We shall maintain restrictions on mass gatherings outside work settings with a maximum number of 50 people in an enclosed space.

“Approved gatherings must be held with physical distancing measures and other non-pharmaceutical interventions in place. Enforcement of a mandatory requirement of a seven-day quarantine for all international passengers arriving from foreign destinations while institutional quarantine for international passengers arriving from the three countries of India, Brazil and Turkey.

“Enforced temperature checks and no mask, no entry policy in all public settings; workplace buildings, businesses and places of worship etc. Access to Government and commercial premises should be denied to persons without facemasks.

“The nationwide curfew will be imposed tonight at midnight and it will run through till 4am. No formal restrictions on movement within the country even as citizens are encouraged to refrain from non-essential movements and comply with all non-pharmaceutical interventions and guidelines.

“People who are above 60 and or with comorbidities are encouraged to stay at home. Only essential international travels are encouraged.”,

Meanwhile, Lagos state tops the list of states with new COVID 19 infections according to the figures recently released by the NCDC. The aquatic state has been the epicenter of the pandemic since it first broke out in March last year.
