The Ondo state government has listed commissioning of some projects and flagging off of new ones to mark 100 days in office of Govenor Rotimi Akeredolu.

Governor Akeredolu was sworn in for the second term of office on February 24, 2021.

Briefing journalists in Akure on Monday, secretary to the state government, Princess Oladunni Odu said the celebration would be low keyed.

She stated that the three senatorial districts of the state would benefit from projects commissioning and flagging off.

Odu, who is Chairman, Committee on 100days Celebration explained that the governor would commission capital projects like; hospitals, Government House Mosque, roads, garri processing, water projects and flagging off of Bursary & scholarship disbursement, as well as ground breaking of new Government’s House Lodge.

The old Government House Lodge, she explained, was no longer habitable as Governor Akeredolu has been residing there despite the deplorable condition.

The immediate past administration of Dr Olusegun Mimiko built a government house during his second term but the Governor could not live there due to defect in structure.

The ground breaking of the new lodge would hold on Friday 4th June, 2021,while first jumat service would hold at the new Mosque.

Odu explained that 7,000 tertiary institutions students would benefit from the state government’s Bursary and scholarship disbursement, adding that the governor would flag-off the disbursement on Monday 7th June, 2021 in Akure for the first time in over seven years.

She noted that the students would get ₦10,000 while law and medical students would be entitle ₦50,0000

The State Government scribe noted that the step was aimed at boosting academic excellence among the benefitting students, while 1,200 primary school teachers recently recruited would be inducted and trained.

Defection: Why Ayade Sacked Commissioners, Aides

Governor Ben Ayade

By Stanley Ekpenyong

Cross River State Governor, Professor Ben Ayade’s decision to sack four of his Commissioners and four Senior Aides, Monday, came to many as a shock, having promised, May 20th, while addressing members of the State Executive Council shortly after announcing his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC, that nobody will lose their jobs as a result of the new political realities in the State.

This magazine learnt that the Governor never contemplated that any member of his cabinet would stay back in the PDP, hence he never planned to dissolve the cabinet.

However, he was said to have been taken aback when some of the now sacked Commissioners: Mrs Rita Ayim, Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mike Usibe, Commissioner for New Cities and Donatus Etim, Commssioner for Climate Change surfaced two days later at the State’s PDP  meeting held at Transcorp Hotel, Calabar.

In fact, Usibe and Ayim were later named members of the Cross River state PDP Caretaker Committee headed by former Deputy Governor, Effiok Cobham. Mrs Ayim is now the Publicity Secretary of the Committee.

For the sacked Information Commissioner, Asu Okan, he has never hidden his partisanship on the side of his kinsman and mentor, Senator Sandy Onor, representing Cross River Central senatorial district in the Senate.

Both men hail from Etung Local Government Area of the state. Senator Onor was one part of the National Assembly members from Cross River who squared up against Governor Ayade for the structures of the PDP in the State.

Etim, the sacked  New Cities Commissioner is reportedly a nominee of Senator Gershon Bassey representing Cross River South in the Senate. Like Senator Onor, Senator Bassey was also part of the Abuja based Cross River PDP bigwigs who fought the Governor over the soul of the party.

The fate of the sacked Commssioners and aides appeard to had been sealed on Sunday by their absence at the APC integration dinner the Governor   held with party stakeholders in the state at Dorchester Hall, Spar Mall Calabar.

At the event which had in attendance, former Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma Egba, former Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Pastor Usani Uguru Usani, Cross River APC Gubernatorial candidate in the 2019 election, Senator Owan Eno, two former Senators that represented Cross River South in the Senate, Senators Prince Bassey Otu and Florence Ita -Giwa, a former Presidential aide, Obono Obla, immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Zana Akpagu among other party bigwigs,  Ayade declare his former party, PDP, as dead and buried in Cross River “because anybody who is not here is nowhere”.

Apart from the four Commissioners, Governor Ayade, also, sacked four of his aides: Leo Inyambe, Rt Hon. Orok Otu Duke, Mr. Victor Okon (Alausa) and Mr. John Etim Bassey.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Christian Ita, quoted the Governor as thanking the sacked Commissioners for their services to the State while asking them to surrender all Government properties in their possession, including vehicles, to the office of the Chief of Staff “with immediate effect”.

Oshiomhole To Obaseki: “We Are Brothers Of Different Parents”; Says Their Misunderstanding, “Unfortunate”

0

By Adesina Soyooye

Adams Oshiomhole, two-time Governor of Edo State, and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has, finally, climbed down from his high horse. He has presented his side which many Nigerians knew, and admired him for- his humble side.

On Monday, May 31, 2021, Oshiomhole sent a congratulatory letter to the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, on his victory at the Supreme Court over Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Ize-Iyamu was Oshiomhole’s  candidate for the Governorship seat, and the man for whom Oshiomhole denied Obaseki his party’s ticket for a second term in office.

The judgement, delivered last Friday, put an end to the legal efforts of the APC to sack PDP’s Obaseki from office.

Obaseki and Oshiomhole were friends. As Governor, Obaseki was Oshiomhole’s Chief of Staff. At the end of Oshiomhole’s tenure, he dumped Ize-Iyamu, and chose Obaseki as his successor. In dumping him, he labelled the Pastor a Cultist and a thief.

Feeling betrayed, Ize-Iyamu defected to the PDP, and became its  flagbearer. That was in 2016. Obaseki won, under the APC.

Along the line, Oshiomhole and Obaseki fell out, and became sworn political enemies. As the National Chairman of the APC,  Oshiomhole denied Obaseki a second term ticket, and ironically, went back to his vomit – Ize-Iyamu, promised him the  ticket, and convinced him to defect to the APC. That was to spite Obaseki.

Denied of a second term ticket, and pushed to the wall, Obaseki defected to the PDP, and picked the Governorship ticket, taking along with him, his Deputy, Philip Shaibu, another Oshiomhole boy.

The untidy situation cost Oshiomhole his high profile office as the APC National Chairman. The Party sacked him in a humiliating manner. It was Oshiomhole’s  lowest moment as a politician.  His case was compounded when Obaseki roundly defeated Ize-Iyamu.

Not a few people saw it as the spanking of Oshiomhole, and an, almost, final nail on his political coffin.

Since that defeat in 2020, they have been in Court with Obaseki, not to challenge the result of the election, but  for Obaseki to be sacked for, allegedly, presenting a forged University of Ibadan degree certificate. They continued, even when the University appeared in Court, on being subpoenaed, and confirmed Obaseki as its graduate. Ize-Iyamu kept appealing the case till it got to the Supreme Court.

Last Friday, the Apex Court dismissed the case for lacking in merit.

Seeing that the case has reached its last bus stop, both Oshiomhole and Ize-Iyamu did what they should have done since 2020. They, finally congratulated Obaseki.

In a letter of congratulations to Obaseki, signed on his behalf by his Media Aide, Victor Oshioke, Oshiomhole reminded  Obaseki of their (former) close relationship. He reminded him that two of them had gone “beyond being friends to becoming brothers of different parents”, and described what came between them as “unfortunate.”

The letter reads:

“Congratulations on your victory at the Supreme Court which has effectively laid to rest all matters arising  from  the last election.

“As I had repeatedly reminded you during our several meetings, our relationship has, through the  years, developed beyond being friends to being brothers of different parents.

“Whatever happened is unfortunate, and I believe God has reasons for everything.

“I have put all behind me and moved on. As I have consistently advised, please be magnanimous in victory. You are the Governor of all Edo people regardless of political leanings.

“Once again, congratulations, Excellency. Please, accept the renewed assurances of my very best wishes and high regards.”

Whether the two will go back to the beautiful relationship they had before, and whether this would make the Governor to forgo a couple of investigations into some projects executed  during Oshiomhole’s tenure as Governor, will wait for, perhaps, new developments.

Gulak’s Murder Was Political – Governor Uzodinma; Why He Came To Imo

Hope Uzodimma

By Charles Igbo

“The events of the last few weeks do not represent who we (Imo people) are”

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State says the murder of Ahmed Gulak was political.

In his first official reaction to the gruesome murder of Alhaji Gulak in Imo State on Sunday, May 30, Uzodinma said it was clearly a political assassination. The Governor also revealed why the murdered former Political Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan was in the State, thus, debunking the many rumours surrounding his visit.

Not a few had said that considering the state of insecurity in the South-east, it was a bad judgement on his side to have visited Imo at the time he did.

But in a broadcast to the people of the State, on Monday, where he bemoaned Gulak’s murder, and consoled all those who lost loved ones during this sad period, Uzodinma said Gulak was on a National assignment.

Gulak was murdered on his way to the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport to board a flight to back to Abuja. Close to the Airport, the Cab he rode in, in the company of two others, was intercepted by gunmen who shot him after identifying him.

Said Uzodinma: “Being a humble man, he chose to travel incognito according to  his friend who was with him. Someone must have trailed him from the hotel to the Airport. That is exactly why his gruesome murder appears to be a clear case of political assassination.”

“According to reports by the Police, he was shot in cold blood, and the assailants did not remove anything from him”

Bemoaning the sudden violence in Imo State, an otherwise peaceful State, the Governor said:

“Imo people are very hospitable. The events of the last two weeks do not represent which we are.”

On why Gulak was in the State, the Governor said: “Alhaji Ahmed Gulak was in Imo State for a National assignment. He came to Owerri with the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendment.”

Gulak was a brilliant lawyer and a former Speaker of the Adamawa House of Assembly, and so, was involved in the process of Constitutional Amendment.

Before the Governor’s disclosure of his mission to Imo, rumours had been rife on why he visited.

While some people said he came to the State to “inspect work on the road contracts given to him in the by Uzodinma”, others said he came to take “his share of the Federal allocation of Imo State.”

Yet, the most heartless of the false reasons for his visit was that “he came to give Uzodinma a final warning to the Governor to pay him the money owed him, Gulak, for giving him, Uzodinma, the APC Governorship ticket in 2019, which Uzodinma  promised to, but never fulfilled the agreed sum of N10b”.

Seeing that he was not able to fulfill it, the rumour alleged,  “the Governor put him in a Cab, and sent assassins after him”.

“All these cruel, and false allegations”, said an Imo elder, “were put on the Social Media, and made to go viral” in order to make the Governor look bad.”

But mourning Gulak, who he described as a patriot, the Governor said: “He was an invaluable friend and brother  whose sense of justice  fairness, and uprightness endeared him to me.”

Gulak was the Chairman of the APC APC Governorship Primary in 2019 during which Uzodinma was declared winner, against former Governor Okorocha’s son-in-law, Uche Nwosu.

That process, eventually, led to his becoming the Governor of Imo State, after the Supreme Court ruled in his favour, and removed the then incumbent  Governor, the Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha.

Uzodinma Was Never Attacked – Media Office

0

By Charles Igbo

“They wish the purported attack on me – Uzodinma”

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, was never under attack by any gunmen, both the Governor and his Media Office have said.

In the aftermath of the murder of a PDP Chieftain,  Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, in the State on May 30  a viral video had surfaced of a Governor’s convoy under attack. It was depicted to he that of the Imo State Governor, with a caption, “Governor Hope Uzodinma’s convoy under attack by unknown gunmen.” That was on May 30, 2021.

Again, on May 31, another video appeared with a caption, “Governor Hope Uzodinma currently under attack by unknown gunmen. Narrowly escapes.”

The Governor’s Media Office  has debunked the viral video. They said that the Governor was never under attack.

Also, in a broadcast to the State on Monday May 31 where he bemoaned the murder of Gulak, Uzodinma debunked the viral video and added: “That is what they wish for me.”

An interrogation of the video by this magazine shows that  it was the convoy of the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, when it came under attack in 2020. Zulum was not on the convoy. His convoy was going to pick him when it was attacked by Boko Haram insurgents who had laid an ambush. Nobody was killed.

In a statement debunking the fake video that Uzodinma came under attack by unknown gunmen,  his Social Media office noted:

“We have seen a video making the rounds on social media and some other conventional media platforms of a purported attack on the convoy of the state Governor.

“While the video lacks clarity of whose convoy it is and where the attack took place, we make bold to say that it is not the convoy of Gov. Hope Uzodimma and this never happened anywhere in Imo State.

“It is appalling that while the State Government is earnestly seeking for ways to restore peace and order in the state, mischief makers can only come up with this stage-managed video of an attack on the Governor.

“Imolites are enjoined to again treat this video as trash, a comical conspiracy and the handiwork of the enemies of the state and be rest assured that in no distant time, Imo state will bounce back to what it is known for which is peace.”

Gulak: The Pain Of Losing A Loved One Is Horrifying

“I was getting ready to go to Church when the sad news came, and I could not attend the Service again. It was one of the most devastating news I have had in my life, and I am yet to recover from the shock”

It is with a very heavy heart that I address you today. The pain of losing a person or loved one, the horror of holding your family member in his or her final moments, the anger of someone being so reckless, so thoughtless that their bullet destroyed your life, are emotions no individual should ever have to endure

I sympathize with the families of those who lost their lives through stray bullets during this period. As you know, the death of anyone diminishes mankind. But the brutal and callous assassination of Alhaji Ahmed Gulak yesterday, Sunday, May 30th, 2021 on his way to the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, is painful because he did not deserve to die that way.

The death of this compatriot is a personal loss to me because he was an invaluable friend and brother whose sense of justice, fairness and uprightness endeared him to me. I was shocked to my marrows when the sad news of his callous murder was broken to me. I was getting ready to go to church when the sad news came and I could not attend the service again. It was simply one of the most devastating news I have had in my life and I am yet to recover from the shock. It remains a puzzle to me why anyone would want to murder him in this gruesome and vicious manner.

Alhaji Ahmed Gulak was in Imo State for a national assignment. He came to Owerri with the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendment. Being a humble man, he chose to travel incognito according to his friend who was with him. Someone must have trailed him from the hotel to the airport. That is exactly why his gruesome murder appears to be a clear case of political assassination.

According to reports by the police, he was shot in cold blood and the assailants did not remove a pin from him. It is most benumbing that people chose to waste such an innocent blood in such a dastardly and cowardly manner.

Let me make it very clear that everything will be done by security agencies to find those who murdered Gulak and their sponsors. They will not by the grace of God escape their deserved punishment. This is not in our character as Ibos, not in our tradition nor in our culture. We must condemn this callous act

I will urge everybody to exercise restraint and allow the police to continue with their investigations, which I understand is already yielding positive results as some arrests have already been made. I commend the police for their speed so far in handling this case.

It is reassuring that the President and Commander in Chief, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, has assured the nation that the perpetrators of this heinous crime would be apprehended and punished.

On our part as a government, we are not sparing any effort in ensuring that the murderers of this patriot are quickly arrested and prosecuted for their evil deeds.

Imo people are very hospitable. The events of the last few weeks do not represent who we truly are.

I believe that the ongoing police investigations will uncover the whole truth; it is common knowledge that those who are innocent need not be afraid. But the guilty will never go scot-free, certainly not in this instant case. Let me also through this medium commiserate with relations and families of victims of kidnapping, armed robberies, banditry and stray bullets in Imo state and to inform you that the government has been reaching out and will continue to reach out to all other victims

May I, on behalf of my family, the Government and the good people of Imo State convey my heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, the Government and the people of Adamawa State, and the families of our brothers and sisters in Imo state who lost their lives during this period.

Let me reassure you that Imo State Government is committed to finding and punishing the killers. Above all it is our fervent prayers that God in his infinite mercy shall grant us the fortitude to bear these devastating and shocking losses of our beloved one, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak; a great Patriot and Nationalist and others.

Finally, let me also clarify the story trending on the social media platforms, that my convoy was attacked, my convoy was never attacked. That is the wish of those who murdered Gulak.

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

Senator Uzodinma, Imo State Governor, delivered this on the death of Barr. Ahmed Gulak, who was brutally murdered in Imo State on Sunday, May 30, while on a National assignment

Nestle Declares Products Unhealthy

If you are a consumer of beverages such as Milo, Nido, Golden Morn, Magi and other consumables from Nestle, the World’s largest food company, you have better watch out because these products have been declared not to meet human healthy standard, by the manufacturer in a report, even though specific was not made about any product.

The Vevey, Switzerland based food firm has acknowledged in an internal document that more than 60 percent of its core food and beverage products do not meet a “recognized definition of health” and that “some of our categories and products they never will be”. healthy ‘no matter how much we renew.”

The data excludes baby formula, pet food, coffee, and the health sciences division, which makes food for people with specific medical conditions. This means that the data represents about half of Nestlé’s total annual revenue of 92.6 billion Swiss francs (72.7 billion pounds), the company said.

According to a report by Financial Times, a presentation that circulated to top executives earlier this year, says that only 37 percent of Nestlé’s food and beverages by revenue, excluding products such as pet food and specialty medical nutrition, achieve a rating above 3.5 under the Australian Health Star Rating. system.

This system rates foods with five stars and is used in research by international groups such as the Access to Nutrition Foundation. Nestlé, the maker of KitKats, Maggi Noodles and Nescafé, describes the 3.5-star threshold as a “recognized definition of health.”

Within its overall food and beverage portfolio, about 70 percent of Nestlé’s food products fell short of that threshold, according to the filing, along with 96 percent of beverages, excluding pure coffee, and 99 percent of Nestlé’s ice cream and confectionery portfolio.

Water and dairy products performed better: 82 per cent of the waters and 60 per cent of the dairy products reached the threshold.

“We have made significant improvements to our products. . . [but] our portfolio still underperforms external definitions of health in a landscape where regulatory pressure and consumer demands are skyrocketing,” the presentation said.

The findings come as food manufacturers face a global push to fight obesity and promote healthier eating. Nestlé executives are considering what new nutrition commitments to make and aim to unveil plans this year.

The group is also updating its internal nutrition standards, known as the Nestlé Nutritional Foundation, which were introduced under former CEO Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, who characterized Nestlé as a “nutrition, health and wellness company.”

One option might be to remove or replace these standards with products that are considered candy, such as candy, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Mark Schneider, CEO, has admitted that consumers want a healthier diet, but rejected claims that “processed” foods, including those made by Nestlé and other multinationals, tend to be unhealthy.

However, the presentation highlights Nestlé products, such as a DiGiorno three-meat croissant pizza, which includes about 40 percent of the recommended daily amount of sodium for one person, and a Hot Pockets pepperoni pizza that contains 48 percent.

Another product, an orange-flavored San Pellegrino drink, gets an “E,” the worst grade available in a different scoring system, Nutri-Score, with more than 7.1 g of sugar per 100 ml, the presentation says, asking, “Should one bring the health brand to E. [rating]? ”

Separately, Nestlé strawberry flavored Nesquik, which is sold in the US, contains 14g of sugar in a 14g serving, although it is designed to be mixed with milk. It is described as “perfect for breakfast to get the kids ready for the day”.

Nestlé said it is “working on a company-wide project to update its pioneering nutrition and health strategy. We are looking at our entire portfolio at different stages of people’s lives to ensure that our products help meet their nutritional needs and support a balanced diet.

“Our efforts are built on a solid foundation of work for decades. . . For example, we have reduced the sugars and sodium in our products significantly in the last two decades, about 14 to 15 percent in the last seven years alone. “

Marion Nestlé (no relative), visiting professor of nutritional sciences at Cornell University, said Nestlé and its rivals would have a difficult time making their portfolios healthy overall.

“The job of food companies is to generate money for shareholders and generate it as quickly and as much as possible. They are going to sell products that reach a mass audience and are bought by as many people as possible, that people want to buy, and that is junk food, “he said.

“Nestlé is a very smart company, at least because of my meetings with people who are dedicated to science[departments]. . . but they have a real problem. . . Scientists have been working for years to try to figure out how to lower the salt and sugar content without changing the flavor profile and guess what, it’s hard to do. “

Some products that are perceived as healthy, such as plant-based meat alternatives, are strong growth areas for food producers. Nestlé sold some of its divisions that produced less healthy products, such as a 60 percent stake in Herta’s sausage division in 2019.

Nestlé ranked first among the world’s major food and beverage manufacturers in a 2018 index of efforts to promote better diets compiled by the Access to Nutrition Foundation, although the foundation cautioned that “all companies must do much more.”

“In recent years, we have launched thousands of products for children and families that meet external nutrition criteria. We have also distributed billions of doses of micronutrients through our affordable and nutritious products.

“Our direction of travel has not changed and it is clear: we will continue to make our portfolio tastier and healthier,” Nestle said.

INEC Retreat

By Akinwale Kasali

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has condemned the spate of arson and vandalisation of its facilities.

On Sunday, one of its newest  offices in Njaba Local Government Area, Imo State, was set ablaze, bringing the total number of INEC offices burnt and vandalised to 42 since 2019.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, said the Commission is engaging with relevant stakeholders to change the narratives, insisting that INEC remains committed to the discharge of its statutory responsibilities of improving and sustaining democracy in the country.

Yakubu, represented by National Commissioner, Adekunle Ademola, said that it was necessary for the Commission to meet towards the validation of INEC Strategic Plan 2022-2026.

The event held at Raddison Blu, Ikeja, Lagos, saw INEC Resident Electoral Commissioners and top officials brainstorming and navigating to develop a system to institutionalize continuous improvement at all levels towards its mandate.

Yakubu added that the retreat is targeted at strengthening the conduct of free, fair, credible and inclusive elections.

In the same vein, INEC international development partners, European Union Support to Democratic Governance In Nigeria, ECES,  applauded the initiative, saying that the Strategic Plan for 2022-2026 will facilitate an improved electoral environment ahead of the upcoming Governorship elections in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun next year, and then the 2023 General Elections.

Project Coordinator and ECES Representative in Nigeria, Hamza Fassi-Fihri, expressed sympathy over the arson and attacks that the Commission faced post 2019 elections, stressing that it is quite unfortunate and regrettable situation that warrants an emergency action by all critical stakeholders and lovers of democracy to ensure this does not escalate further.

ECES promised to always stand by INEC and Nigerians to ensure that credible Election is held in the country.

There  tension in Jalingo, Taraba State Capital, as gunmen stormed the staff quarters of the Taraba State University, and abducted a lecturer.

The lecturer, identified as Umar Buba and Head of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management (Faculty of Agriculture), was kidnapped in the early hours of Sunday, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Vincent Ado-Tenebe, said.

Ado-Tenebe, who visited the scene of the incident said that the assailants fired sporadic gunshots to displace the security officials attached to the staff quarters during the attack.

“This is a very sad story, and it has not happened in the past two to three years ago when we had our Director of Information kidnapped after which we put so many strategies on the ground to prevent ugly situations in the future.

“I am so surprised that this happened again, and I know that we have police personnel, that of NSCDC, our security outfit, and vigilante group members hired by the institution to keep the place safe and despite all of these, the former Dean of Students Affair has been kidnapped,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor, however, gave an assurance that more efforts would be put in place for more security operatives to be deployed, and stressed the need for more arms and ammunition to fight the hoodlums.

He stated that staff and students living within the confines of the school cannot challenge armed men with bare hands, noting that the Management would engage concerned authorities to grant licences for staff to have their guns for their protection and that of the students.

He said, “If you have a licensed gun and you are trained, then you will be able to defend your family and the immediate community of students.

“We have grown past this, and I don’t think there is going to be any other solution than for us to apply for licencing of arms so that these bandits will know that we are equal to the task to defend the defenceless.”

Narrating how her husband was abducted, Umar’s wife, Samira, explained that they had just switched off their generator at about 12:15am when they heard a noise which they believed was a windstorm.

“When I met one of them, he asked me where my husband was, and I understood immediately that they were kidnappers. After I understood their plan, I offered myself to be taken as their target instead of my husband and I pleaded that I have a little baby whom I needed to go with and they rejected my offer, insisting that my husband was the target.

“When they gained access, they struggled to go with him (the victim) because he resisted. We have never heard that kind of gunshot in our entire lives,” she recounted.

She  added that shortly after the incident, some security operatives arrived at the scene and went after the kidnappers through the bush paths but found nothing but charms, alcoholic drinks, and some clothes abandoned by the gunmen.

She stated that the abductors of her husband have not made any contact with the family to know what their demands were.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Taraba, David Misal, said the police were on the trail of the kidnappers to rescue the lecturer.

He also called on the residents to provide the police with useful information that would aid the rescue of the abducted lecturer.

OPINION: Mr President, Forget The Review of 1999 Constitution

0

By Bode George

“The unanimous position of the Nigerian people is the total overhaul of the present constitution. Nothing else will do. A genuine juncture of remedy will be to revisit the report of the 2014 Constitutional Conference which has been generally applauded for the sweeping breadth of its equity and democratic balance in rectifying the prejudicial and unworkable structures that are on the ground now.”

It was our first Prime Minister Alhaji Tafawa Balewa who once observed that the “Nigerian democracy should be an ethnic commonwealth which should give each constituent a fair place under its umbrella even if they have lost at the polls. “

This succinct wisdom long uttered more than sixty years ago is the very pivot of the present agitation for a more equitable union.

However, the present shadow boxing in the name of constitution review will not meet Balewa’s standard.

And thus, when the Senate Constitutional Review Committee berthed in Lagos the other day, it was without any inkling of democratic seriousness, totally devoid of any sense of fairness, indifferent to the equitable pursuit of justice.

The Lagos public hearing of the constitutional review committee was wrong footed ab initio. There was nothing genuine or sincere about the mode of presentation.

There was no attempt to widen the pool of contributions or give the public hearing any semblance of popular input.

The Chairperson of the Lagos hearing, Senator Remi Tinubu, typified the narrow, restrictive nature of the Committee. She was overbearing, uppity, vain, even truculent in her engagement with contributors.

Many people were deliberately denied the openness of democratic contributions. The hearing was stage-managed, anchored in prejudice, framed in puppeteering identification. Alternative views were cast aside, flung into the pits . This is not right . This is not just.

It is obvious that the Committee is not interested in true and thorough representation of the will of the Nigerian people. It appears to be working with a script towards a predetermined end. The contributions were narrow, overtly partisan, one-sided, lacking in plural contributory logic.

This is not acceptable to the Nigerian people. The structures of the present constitution is so biased, so flawed and so mangled with inequities that a mere review will not be sufficient to correct all the glaring wrongs afflicting the Nigerian state.

The unanimous position of the Nigerian people is the total overhaul of the present constitution. Nothing else will do. A genuine juncture of remedy will be to revisit the report of the 2014 Constitutional Conference which has been generally applauded for the sweeping breadth of its equity and democratic balance in rectifying the prejudicial and unworkable structures that are on the ground now.

As a stakeholder in the Nigerian project and as someone who is sworn to the unity of the Nigerian state, I believe that our nation can emerge stronger and better only when all the component units that make up our nation have a sense of belongingness and general accommodation regardless of tribe or sectarian belief, when everyone is treated equally without ethnic bias, when merit is the sole determinant of public positions.

This can only be achieved with a people’s constitution. This is indeed what we should work for rather than the charade and the present jamboree that is chaired by Senator Ovie Omo – Agege.

Enough of this false and misleading engagement. Let’s renew our nation through the pursuit of the truth and the resolve on the fairness doctrine. Their-in resides the national salvation.

It is only fit and proper that I should conclude this intervention with another nugget of wisdom from our first Prime Minister, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa when he observed :

“If crooks are allowed to determine the destiny of the people, the people will suffer indefinitely. “
