Insecurity: Mind Your Language, Moghalu Tells Buhari

0

By Uche Mbah

“I saw war. War is terrible. It sounds romantic. But it is terrible

A former Presidential candidate in the 2019 elections, Kingsley Moghalu, has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s stance on the security situation, particularly in the South east, calling on Buhari to be careful the language he uses to address volatile situations.

President Buhari had, in a tweet, said that those   causing trouble are people who want him to fail, adding that those who are agitating in the South east are those who have not seen the civil war.

“Whoever wants the destruction of the system will soon have the shock of their lives. We’ve given them enough time. we will treat them in the language they understand”, he said.

But speaking on Channels Television, Moghalu said he was right up to the point he said that some who are agitating were not born during the civil war.

“I saw the war. I was a young child. I want to tell you that war is terrible. It may sound romantic, but it is not in reality. Therefore, we must avoid arms conflict and civil war in this country.

“But to the point he said ‘we will treat them in the language they understand’ I did not think it is a statement he should have made as a President of the country. Language matters when you are a leader and when you are facing a crisis.

“That language can be interpreted in so many ways. A lot of horrible things happened. It involved several violations of international humanitarian laws, a lot of war crimes were committed in that civil war mainly against citizens of one particular side of the war.

“So when you are saying we will treat them in the language they understand, you are bringing up invocations that are very unpleasant. You can say that you will create measures to protect the security of government institutions. That’s what the government is supposed to do”

Foreign Reserve Drops By $1.7bn In 4 Months

Godwin-Emefiele-CBN-Governor

Withing four months Nigeria external reserve has shrunk by close to $2 billion according to figures obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Godwin Emefiele, CBN Governor had during the monthly Monetary Policy Meeting, MPC said the nation’s Forex reserves depleted by over $640 million in May blaming the fall in oil revenue.

The apex bank had in March said the Reserve has decreased by over $1.1 billion as the nation continue to struggle with the fall in income from crude oil sales, which threatens revenue sharing among the 36 states and federating government, including the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The NNPC, on Monday,  said crude oil sales has dropped by 98 percent, after the government owned company said last month that it’s remittance into the Consolidated Revenue Account, CRA was no longer guaranteed due to protracted decline in oil sales.

Analysts insist that funding for critical public infrastructure is threatened by decline in oil income, even as the federal government looks for other sources to fund   the deficit in the 2021 Budget.

Emefiele said after the MPC meeting that the country’se reserves lost $640m in May, falling to $34.24bn on May 28 from $34.88bn as of April 28.

The apex bank governor said “This reflects sales to the foreign exchange market and third-party payments.”

In March, the reserves lost $178m after dropping from $34.99bn as of March 1 to $34.82bn as of the end of March 31.

In February, the reserves dropped by $1.1bn, falling from $36.19bn as of February 1 to $35.09bn on February 26.

The CBN, in its January economic report, said, “As a consequence of the lower foreign exchange receipts, the official external reserves declined.

“External reserves stood at $35.44bn at end-January 2021, a decrease of 2.8 per cent and 3.5 per cent from $36.46bn in December 2020 and $36.73bn in January 2020.”

Keyamo Backs Buhari’s Decision To Quash IPOB/ ESN

Festus Keyamo

By James Orji

President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to descend heavily on troublemakers in the country has received backing from a familiar quarter, Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Labour and Employment, who said the president must go ahead to deal with secessionists groups with iron fist.

The minister, who is an ardent supporter of the president  made the comment amidst fear of bloodshed if security agencies went ahead to carry out Buhari’s order to deal with secessionist Indegenous People of Biafra,IPOB and it’s militant group the Eastern Security Network, ESN which has been accused of unwarranted killings and destruction of public infrastructure, such as police stations and Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC offices in the zone.

Some policemen have also been killed by suspected IPOB/ ESN members, even though the group denied involvement in the spate of wanton killings now going on the the zone.

The president’s comments, on Monday, to deal with secessionist elements the same way the federal government fought the Civil War against Biafra in the late 60s, has elicited outrage from the opposition PDP and other Nigerians who urged the president to handle the matter with caution.

But while speaking on the issue on Tuesday , Keyamo said the president cannot continue to watch the country fall into anarchy, when some leaders have failed to speak up to condemn the destructive acts of secessionist groups.

Buhari who promised to meet fire with fire, following the killing of former Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak last Sunday, promised to descend heavily on troublemakers, and bring Gulak’s killers to book.

Keyamo blamed south east leaders for the ongoing carnage saying “I hope some elites who couldn’t find their voices to rein in their wards when their region burnt, will not suddenly find their voices against Mr. President! Those who screamed that it’s Mr. The President’s duty to maintain law & order should NOT try to teach him how to do his job now.

“The anger some are displaying against the President’s resolve to be decisive in dealing with these scoundrels is an indication of their support for the destruction of public infrastructure because they want to cripple Govt. A pure case of cutting your nose to spite your face!

“A very unfortunate reasoning you read is that because insurgency is still prevalent in some other parts of the country, the President should just allow some villains destroy another region. It’s like a competition to bring the insecurity in one region at par with other regions!

“The President has vowed to deal with the scoundrels destroying public infrastructure & killing people to instigate insurrection & some dimwits really interpret this to mean he is threatening INNOCENT citizens! This reasoning is so ABSURD that I don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” Keyamo said in his tweets on Tuesday.

Okorocha: Why I Foot-dragged On Gulak’s Murder

0

By Gideon Njoku

Politics has, in recent times, been allowed to eat deep into the fabric of the Nation’s life, so much, that when certain situations like the death of Gulak arise, Leaders would foot-drag over what they should have, ordinarily, done, or say, because of the needless political colouration some Leaders have chosen to give to every incident”

Former Governor of Imo State, and now, the Senator representing Imo West, has hinted on why he delayed before reacting to the gruesome murder of Alhaji Ahmed Gulak in Imo State, on Sunday, May 30, 2021.

Gulak was murdered on his way to the Imo airport to take a flight back to Abuja.

While the State Police Command put his murder at the feet of the Eastern Security Network, ESN, the Security branch of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, saying it had arrested and/or killed the gang responsible for murder, the State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, in a broadcast to the State on Monday, said it was a political assassination, insisting that everything will be done to unravel the sponsors.

Since Gulak’s gruesome murder, not a few people were taken aback that most high profile politicians in the State kept sealed lips.

Ordinarily, such a brutal murder of Gulak, a high profile politician, who had been a member of both most prominent political parties – APC and PDP, the parties to which all prominent politicians in the State belong to, ought to have attracted immediate outrage.

But the political bitterness and hatred in the State is so deep that some people see it as an APC/PDP “fight”. So, there is an unbelievable indifference or “inner satisfaction.”

A few people had called out Okorocha, in particular, asking why he had made no statement on Gulak’s murder, especially, as they belonged to same party, APC.

But Okorocha was, understandably, being careful. He, and his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, had tangoed with Gulak, and were very bitter with him. Both of them say it was Gulak who deliberately denied Nwosu of the APC ticket. And, they think that but for him,  perhaps, Nwosu could have been Governor today.

But, finally, he has spoken. In speaking, he explained why he delayed in commenting on the gruesome murder. He hinted on all kinds of talks and allegations and speculations, over Gulak’s murder. In a statement signed on his behalf by his Media Adviser, Sam Onwuemeodo,  Okorocha said: “Politics has, in recent times, been allowed to eat deep into the fabric of the Nation’s life so much that when certain situations like the death of Gulak arise, leaders would foot-drag over what they should have ordinarily done, or say, because of the needless political colourations some leaders have chosen to give to every incident.”

He called on the Inspector General of Police to take over the investigation, and advised leaders to be sensitive to their utterances.

Following is the statement released on Okorocha’s behalf by Onwuemeodo.

“Former Governor of Imo State and Senator representing Imo West Senatorial Zone, Senator Rochas Okorocha has outrightly condemned the unfortunate murder of one of the front row politicians in this country, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, describing his death, as unfortunate and disheartening.

“Senator Okorocha has also sent his heartfelt condolences to the family of Alhaji Gulak and to the Government of Adamawa State, over the death of the politician, explaining that the Nation at large, and Adamawa State in particular, have lost a very vibrant politician.

“He regretted that politics has in recent time, been allowed to eat deep into the fabric of the nations life, so much so that, when certain situations like the death of Gulak arise, leaders would foot-drag over what they should have ordinarily done or say, because of the needless political colourations some leaders have chosen to give to every incident.

“Okorocha appealed to leaders and stakeholders, to always guard their utterances on sensitive issues, to avoid jeopardizing efforts being made by genuine leaders to stop the ugly story of insecurity in the Country, adding that, leaders should show their commitment to the campaign against insecurity through their utterances, actions and inactions.

“Senator Okorocha calls for unmitigated investigation to unravel the motive or circumstances surrounding the killing of Gulak, adding that, the lnspector General of Police should take over the investigation to ensure that a thorough job is done.

“Okorocha regretted the spate of killings across the nation including his home State Imo, that had been peaceful before now, stating that, where the use of force or use of arms has failed, diplomacy, dialogue and God-given wisdom can be deployed.

“He remarked that anybody or any leader trying to score cheap political point or gain, out of these killings, should be seen as very unpatriotic and called on such people to help the nation, by having a rethink, adding that the lives of Nigerians can not equated with political gains.

Rotimi Akeredolu - Ondo Communal Clash

Ondo State Governor, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has reiterated the need to ensure that the proposed Sea port in the State becomes a reality if the Nation is truly committed to doing what is right.

The Governor said the State has every advantage to have a deep seaport considering the unique deepest draught in the state.

Stating that the state waterways need no dredging, Mr Akeredolu noted that the State Government has completed every necessary study on the proposed deep sea port.

The Governor spoke on Tuesday while receiving participants of the Senior Course 43, 2021 of the National Institute For Policy and Strategies Studies (NIPSS), led by the Director of Studies of the institute, Professor Funmi Para-Mallam.

The participants are in the state as part of their study tours.

NIPSS is a policy formulation center for bureaucrats, private sector leaders, Military officers and medium-ranking, as well as senior civil servants.

The Governor disclosed that there are investors including Dubai Wharf and China Harbour that have expressed interest in developing the seaport in the state.

Speaking on the theme for the study titled “Getting Things Done, Policy and Program Implementation in Nigeria”, he charged the participants of the NIPSS Senior Course 43 to advocate for the need to do what is right in the country.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Richard Olatunde, said Governor Akeredolu identified not getting things done as the bane of the country.

“You are the foremost nation’s think-tank. This institute has been existing for long. People have gone for studies in this institute. I don’t know if we are getting things done in this country.

“If you look at the crop of Technocrats that are here, you will know that if we listen to what you have and try and implement your innovative ideas, we would have developed a long time ago.”

The leader of the Team, Professor Funmi Para-Mallam, explained that their study in the state is focused on strategy for policy and programme implementation for the country.

She pointed out that the team was in the state to interact with the State Government’s Resource Persons on the programmes and policies of the state and how they are being achieved.

Joy, As Gov Makinde Makes Unscheduled Visit To LAUTECH; Slashes Tuition Fees By 25 Percent

By Ayodele Oni

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, announced a 25 per cent reduction in the tuition fees payable by students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).

The Governor, who made the announcement during an unscheduled visit to the Institution in Ogbomoso, said that the reduction would cut across all students irrespective of their status.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, in a statement, quoted Makinde as saying that he was thankful to the students for their warm reception despite the impromptu nature of his visit.

He also stated that he was happy to fulfill the promise of securing the sole ownership of LAUTECH for Oyo State.

“I am glad to be back among you. After the 2019 election, I should have returned to say thank you to you but I didn’t want to come until I fulfill what I promised you, which is the sole ownership of LAUTECH by Oyo State.

“I am still coming back to spend the night here and we will really celebrate then but I can leave you with a parting gift for today.

“Let me tell you, the LAUTECH fee is still the lowest in the entire South-West. Having said that, I will reduce your fee across board; whether indigenes or non-indigenes, even new students. There will be a reduction of 25 per cent across board.”

The Governor explained that part of his electioneering campaign was to fix Under-G/Stadium road with street light so as to prevent students from being molested, robbed and/or killed by miscreants.

He added that the road has been completed and is now being used by residents and students.

The governor stated that from now on, a four-year programme in LAUTECH will not be turned to eight years again.

“Again, if you remember, during my electioneering campaign in 2019, I promised you that we will fix Under-Stadium road so that none of our students will get killed on the main road.

“Now, the road is fixed and you have the street light installed. The securing of the sole ownership of the University means never again will a four-year programme turn into an 8-year programme in LAUTECH.”

The Governor, who also commissioned the High Dependency Unit of the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, said that his administration would construct a befitting flyover in Ogbomoso.

He also reassured the re-engaged 170 staff of the Teaching Hospital, who were relieved of their employment by the previous administration that the current Government will pay their five months salary arrears.

Scrap The Senate, Save Funds For Developmental Projects – Gov. Akeredolu Charges Constitution Review Committee

By Ayodele Oni

The South West Zonal Sitting of the House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review began in Akure, Ondo state, Tuesday, with Governor Rotimi Akeredolu advocating for a Unicameral Legislature at the Federal level.

The Governor was of the view that the Senate, regarded as the Red Chamber, should be scrapped to reduce cost of governance.

He, also, suggested a reduction in the number of Ministries and parastatals as this would make more funds available for developmental projects.

The South West Zonal Public Hearing Center is for Ondo, Ekiti and Osun States, where various Speakers will present papers and submit Memorandum for the review of the 1999 Constitution.

Governor Akeredolu had, last week, received in Akure, members of the Senate Committee on similar exercise led by Senator Ajayi Borofice, representing Ondo North at the Senate.

While declaring open the talk shop, Governor Akeredolu, represented by Deputy governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, pointed out that the scaling down of the members of the National Assembly and the ministries would drastically cut cost of governance in the country.

“The position of the Ondo State Government has been made public. We advocate for a Federal Government largely reduced in size and scope of engagement.

“We want to see a Constitution that will enhance the performance of public office holders at all levels.

“It is possible to have a government that will serve the people in deed and truth. The law of the land must aid this realistic expectation.

“We must reduce the cost of governance and shift attention to service delivery in this trying period.”

“The country may consider dropping the current bicameral structure of the National Assembly and adopt a unicameral legislature.

“The membership of the Assembly should be part time. No member should earn allowances not known to the Revenue Mobilisation and Allocation Committee and, more importantly, people they claim to serve.

“Legislators should earn under a uniform salary structure. Allowance peculiarities must not be about obscenity. The Senate should be scrapped.

“The House of Representatives too should not be unwieldy. A maximum of four representatives should come from each zone.”

Earlier in a welcome address, the Chairman, House special committee on Constitution Review, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase represented by Mr Peter Akpatason pointed out that the exercise would consider the views of the people.

A number of Nigerians have been either for, or against the review of the Military-imposed 1999 Constitution, as amended. While some say go back to the pre-1999 Constitution, others say to dust up the 2014 Goodluck Jonathan Constitutional Conference, while others are in favour of a completely new Constitution.

Update On NECO Boss: Police Debunk Murder Story, Say Prof Obioma Died In Abuja After Brief Illness

By Ayodele Oni

Both the FCT and Niger State Police Commands  have  put a lie  to Media reports that the Registrar/Chief executive of the National Examinations Council, (NECO), Prof Godswill Obioma was killed in his Kaduna home by yet to be identified gunmen.

Media reports, quoting his wife, Elizabeth, had said that  the NECO boss was strangled to death on his return from Abuja  by yet to be identified assassins who, unknown to them, were lurking within his compound.

But soon, a letter to the Director,Human Resource  Manager, NECO, Mustapha K. Abdul, by the Professor’s first son, Prince Godwin Obioma, informed him that his father passed on after a brief illness.

The junior Obioma’s version has been confirmed by the Police. The FCT Command said he died at the National Hospital after he was rushed  there.

The Niger Police Command in a release stated that: “The attention of Niger State Police Command has been drawn to a publication circulating in some section of social media and national dailies that NECO Registrar Prof. Godswill Obioma was murdered by unknown gunmen in Minna.”

The release, signed by the Command’s Spokesman, DSP Abiodun Wasiu, said  that: “This story is totally false, untrue and a pure element of fake news.

“It is important to state, categorically, that on 31st May, 2021 the Registrar/CEO National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof Godswill Obioma, was rushed to National Hospital Abuja by his family members where he was later confirmed dead, after a brief illness.

“However, the family of the deceased has, also, confirmed the incident and formally notified the Management and  Staff of NECO of the demise of the  Registrar.

“Members of the public are hereby urged to disregard the fake news and, news reporters are advised to always verify their report before publication to avoid creating unnecessary panic and fear in public domain.”

The questions are: Why would his wife, Elizabeth, claim her husband was strangled to death? And, why has she not denied speaking to the Media on the manner of her husband’s  death? Is there an in-fighting  within the family? Or was the alleged claim by his wife fabricated by a mischief source?

Prof Obioma, a native of Abia State was appointed NECO Boss barely one year ago. He was aged 67 years.
