Insecurity: Speak-out, Uzodimma Challenges Leaders; Says, “Only Me Cannot Restore Security In Imo State”

Hope Uzodimma

By Adesina Soyooye

“Leaders must speak out. And the time to speak out is now. This is not about politics. If they are not doing  so, it means covertly or overtly, something is not adding up, and that, obviously, affects National interest.”

Imo State Governor has bemoaned the conspiracy of silence among leaders, especially, in the South-east, in the face of the frightening insecurity situation.

Like not a few people, the Governor wondered why they were neither speaking out, nor engaging their people, submitting that the situation should have nothing to do with politics. He challenged them to rise above partisan politics and show their love and concern for their people. He noted:

“Only me cannot fight insecurity in Imo State.”

He said that the time has come for all leaders in Imo State to join hands with the Government to restore security and peace  in the state.

A Press Release, signed by his Chief Press Secretary/Special Adviser, Media, Oguwike Nwachuku, said the Governor spoke on Tuesday, in Abuja, with State House Correspondents after a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari  on the state of insecurity in Imo.

“Only me cannot restore security in Imo State. I cannot guarantee security alone in the state. And that is why  I am engaging the traditional rulers, the Town Unions, the Church leaders, the youth and women, to ensure that together we brainstorm on how we can secure our state,” Governor Uzodimma said.

However, the Governor regretted that most leaders in the country in general, and Sout East in particular, are not speaking out as should be expected of them on the (in)security development in the country and the region.

He said it was expected that leaders who had held critical positions in Nigeria should have been at the forefront of the condemnation of the  criminality that is giving vent to insecurity in parts of the country and of late the South East.

Governor Uzodimma noted, for instance, that past Senate Presidents, House of Representatives Speakers, Ministers, Governors and the likes should have been holding town hall meetings with the people in their localities to draw their attention to the dangers of what criminal elements in our midst are doing to abridge the peace of the society

They must do so  in the spirit of patriotism and for national interest.

His words: “Leaders must speak out. And the time to speak out is now. This is not about politics.

If they are not doing so, it means covertly or overtly something is not adding up and that obviously affects our national interest.”

The Governor maintained that in the spirit of the sovereignty of our country everybody must get involved in solving the security problem confronting us, in National interest, or ensure that those causing the problem for everybody are made to face the law.

He reiterated, in the case of Imo State,  that if all the key players  come together the problem of insecurity will be over and the state restored to her peaceful status.

Ondo State Governor, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has said traditional and local approach should be employed to tackle insecurity.

According to the Governor,  crime is a local issue that should be addressed with a large dose of home-grown content.

He pointed out that Amotekun Security Corps initiative was a baby of necessity, conceived as a home-grown approach to solving the plethora of security challenges that have put the people on the edge.

Governor Akeredolu spoke on Tuesday in Akure, at the passing-out ceremony for the newly recruited Amotekun Corps officers.

The event was part of the activities marking the first 100 days of Governor Akeredolu’s second term.

The Governor also commissioned 20 new patrol vehicles to boost the operations of the state security network.

He unveiled the roadmap to internal and border security in Ondo state, assuring that the state shall become the safest and most secured in the country, if the strategies contained in the roadmap are religiously implemented.

Mr Akeredolu said Amotekun’s impact has been remarkable, adding that the security outfit has also given the people of the state hope in the management of security, despite that it came into being just a little over a year ago.

“It has further reinforced our long time view that State and community-based policing is the panacea to the country’s security challenges.

“Let me reassure the good people of Ondo State that our administration will leave no stone unturned as far as the implementation of our redeemed Agenda is concerned.

“The sixth goal of the Agenda which is “Maintenance of Law and Order for Adequate Security” is the reason why we are here today.

“I enjoin all the good people of Ondo State to lend your cooperation in terms of providing credible intelligence and financial support towards the success of this initiative.

“Today’s event is one of the milestones recorded by our administration in our attempt to redeem Ondo State from the shackles of poverty, disease, and underdevelopment.

“These cannot be achieved without a sense of safety and peace.”

Governor Akeredolu appreciated members of the State House of Assembly, for their tireless legislative support in making Amotekun a reality.

He also thanked the Traditional Rulers for their immense support and cooperation and the leadership of all the security agencies in the state for their cooperation in tackling security challenges.

Barring any last minute changes, President Mohammadu Buhari is expected to commission the 156km Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge Rail this week.

The project is implemented to facilitate easy transportation between the two major Cities.

The Legacy Awareness and Campaign team of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) disclosed this in a statement  in Abuja.

“This week, the President will commission the 156km Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge Rail, the first double-track Standard Gauge Rail project in West Africa (and the first Standard Gauge Rail project in Nigeria to be started and completed by the same administration).

“This landmark commissioning is taking place nine months after he commissioned the 327km Itakpe-Warri Standard Gauge Rail, completed by his administration 33 years after construction began.

“The 168km Abuja-Kaduna Rail project, and the 42.5km Abuja Light Rail project, both inherited from previous administrations, were completed in 2016 and 2018 respectively.

“The second Niger Bridge, originally conceived decades ago, is now more than 50 percent completed and scheduled for commissioning in 2022, as is the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which has defied every administration since 1999.

“New International Airport Terminals have been completed and commissioned in Abuja and Port Harcourt, while those in Lagos and Kano are being completed.

“In addition, brand new Runways have been constructed in Abuja and Enugu, in 2017 and 2020 respectively”, the team added.

“It noted that from the start, President Buhari had promised to complete as many abandoned projects as possible, and he has worked hard to fulfill this promise.”

Twitter: CNPP Urges FG To Thread Carefully, Blames NASS

Chief Willy Ezugwu President SERG

Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called on the Federal  Government  to “thread carefully on its clandestine effort to gag the social media voices in Nigeria.”

The CNPP, in a statement signed by the Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu, blamed the National Assembly for “allowing the President and members of the Federal  Executive  to continue to take actions that are detrimental to the wellbeing of the ordinary citizens and the young people in the country.

“The National Assembly has not only continued to be a rubber-stamp legislative chambers,  but also an arm of the executive, and has willingly surrendered its oversight functions. Unfortunately, they have slept on its Constitutional powers to check the excesses of the Executive.

“Today, rather than help the intermittently recessing economy and reduce unemployment in the country, which is the root cause of youth restiveness in the Nigeria, the Federal  Government  claims that National  interest supersedes economic interest. Is economic interest not part of our National  interest?

“The deleted President’s tweet that ignited the suspension of Twitter was part of the reasons we have severally called for the sack of key President’s information handlers, particularly Lai Mohammed and Garba Shehu who have continued to cause more harm to the President’s image than making it.

“The reasons adduced for the suspension or ban of Twitter have remained laughable as the Federal  Government  failed to exhaust other channels of communication. The action of the Federal Government amounts to killing an ant with the slag harmer.

“We are shocked that the action of the Federal  Government  has now worsened the employment deficiency in the country, according to media reports, yet the government is shopping for more unjustifiable reasons for her poorly thought out action.

“The CNPP calls on the Federal  Government  of Nigeria to exercise restraints in dealing with issues that affect the youths and those actions that could directly or indirectly widen the unemployment gaps in the country as the idle mind, they say, is the devil’s workshop”, the statement read.

#Twitter Ban: Chaos In House Of Reps, As PDP Members Walked Out, Moves Against FG

House of Representative in Nigeria

By Akinwale Kasali

The House of Representatives  was in disarray, Tuesday, following mixed reactions over the Federal Government’s ban on Microblogging platform, Twitter.

Opposition Party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members frowned at the ban, calling on the President Muhammadu Buhari’s Government to rescind its decision.

PDP members roundly condemned action, leading to a walk out by its members from the Green Chambers in protest.

It was gathered that the  rowdy session after the Speaker, Femi  Gbajabiamila, ruled PDP’s caucus leader, Kingsley Chinda, out of order.

Chinda had prayed that the Twitter ban imposed by the Federal Government be suspended in the interim.

However, following opposition to the motion, lawmakers and some members of the PDP staged a walkout.

Briefing journalists at the Press Centre of the National Assembly after the walkout,

Hon. Chinda, who spoke on behalf of the lawmakers said the House will move an official motion Wednesday to that effect.

He added that the motion may likely be rejected by the House, but the lawmakers will move the motion notwithstanding.

It will be recalled that last week Friday, the Federal Government suspended Twitter, enforcing a law that any Nigerian who uses the platform will face the wrath of the law.

A number of Nigerians,  including high profile Clerics   have since called the bluff of the FG.

Electricity: W/Bank Ranks Nigeria Worst, FG Spends N1.5trn On Power In 2 Years

0

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Nigeria has been ranked the world’s number one in terms of provision of electricity to her people. What this means is that the west African nation has the lowest electricity tele density, according to the World Bank in a recent report.

The Bretton wood, US based bank made this known in a statement on Monday, where it said Nigeria tops the list of 20 countries with the largest population of over 580 million people lacking access to electricity.

Two years ago, Nigeria accounted for 90 million unelectrified people, followed by the Democratic Republic of Congo with 70 million, and Ethiopia (which replaced India in third place in 2019) with 58 million people.

The World Bank’s revelation came on the heels of a recent disclosure by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo that the federal government spent over N1.5 trillion on electricity generation in the last two years.

In spite of this, records provided by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, NBS indicate that the total power generation hovers around less than 4000 megawatts.

The President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration’s promise to grow generation to 7,000MW by 2021 had been farfetched as the country continues to wallow in darkness, while the breakdown of power grids across the country is a normal occurrence, according to experts.

According to the World Bank, erratic power supply has cost the country over $29 billion in annual income.

It also said that the number of people without access to electricity in the world declined from 1.2 billion in 2010 to 759 million in 2019. Out of this figure, about half of them live in fragile and conflict-affected settings such as Nigeria.

The statement, quoting the recently released Tracking SDG 7: The Energy Progress report, said that unless efforts are made towards significantly Improving power supply, access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy by 2030 in these countries remains elusive.

The bank said “According to the report, significant progress has been made since 2010 on various aspects of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, but progress has been unequal across regions,” the statement reads.

“While more than one billion people gained access to electricity globally over the last decade, COVID’s financial impact has made basic electricity services unaffordable for 30 million more people, the majority located in Africa.

Minister of Power Mamman Kwagyang Saleh
Minister of Power Mamman Kwagyang Saleh

“Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia had the biggest electricity access deficits, with Ethiopia replacing India in the Top 3.”

Some countries have showed sustained effort to improve electricity supply to their peoples, the bank said in the report, noting that “Among the 20 countries with the largest access deficits, Bangladesh, Kenya, and Uganda showed the greatest improvement since 2010, thanks to annual electrification growth rates in excess of 3 percentage points, driven largely by an integrated approach that combined grid, mini grid and on-grid solar electrification.”

It ranked Nigeria among the top 20 countries with most people lacking access to clean fuel and technologies for cooking.

According to the institution “Of the top 20 countries with greatest number of people lacking access to clean fuel and technologies for cooking, 10 are located in Sub-Saharan Africa (Nigeria, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, Madagascar, Ghana, Niger),” the statement adds.

“Six are in Eastern Asia and South-eastern Asia (China, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, Viet Nam, the Democratic Republic of Korea) and four are in Central Asia and Southern Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan),” the report said.

Allow The Igbo To Go – Northern Elders Forum

0
Northern Elders Forum

By Gideon Njoku

“The Forum has arrived at the difficult conclusion that if support for secession among the Igbo is as widespread as it is being made to look, and Igbo leadership appears to be in support of it, then the country should be advised not to stand on its way. It will not be the best choice for the Igbo or Nigerians to leave a country we have all toiled to build and a country we all have responsibility to fix, but it will not help a country already burdened with failures on its knees to fight another war to keep the Igbo in Nigeria”

The Northern Elders Forum, NEF, one of the most influential voices in North, made up of academics, technocrats and politicians, has advised Nigeria to allow the Igbo to secede from Nigeria if they so desire.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, June 7, and signed by its Director, Publicity and Advocacy, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, NEF said “All Nigerians are paying the price of failure of two sets of leaders. At the National level, the Administration appears to have lost the capacity to halt the gradual decent of the country into anarchy.”

But taking a hard look at the South-east, it said the Political leaders in the Zone have been cowed into submission by the violence and terror of IPOB/ESN.

“Muted voices of millions of Igbo cannot be heard so that fellow Nigerians could understand the degree to which secession by the Igbo represents the popular choice”

The Forum believes it is important to address amendments to the Constitution so as to achieve major changes in the “structure and operations of our Federal system now”, but noted the National Assembly has lost touch with the people they say they represent.

It, also, strongly condemned the attacks and killings of Northerners and Federal Government employees as well as the destruction of National assets insisting:

“Those who are involved in it must be arrested and prosecuted. Until the Igbo decide whether it wants to secede or remain part of Nigeria, the law applies to it, and Federal and State Governments who have responsibility to enforce the law and protect citizens must enforce it.”

Following is the full Statement by NEF.

“Northern Elders Forum has reviewed  events and tendencies which suggest that the country is headed for more crises. Nigerians live in fear of violence today, and in fear of uncertain future. The capacity of the Nigerian State to secure citizens, protect the country’s territorial integrity and resist violent assaults on our unity is weakening to the levels of making threats that have no impact.

“Armed criminals of all types have increased their audacious stranglehold over our lives in all parts of the country.

“Irredentists are increasingly asserting their influence over in the South East and some part of the country, and in the manner that millions of Nigerians now live. Rhetorics from political leaders and ethnic champions who speak in threats and demands routinely suggest that the sentiments in support of irredentism are becoming more widespread.

“All Nigerians are paying the price of failure of two sets of leaders. At the national level, the administration appears to have lost the capacity to halt the gradual descent of the country into anarchy. Political leaders in the South East appear to have submitted to violence and terror of IPOB and ESN.

“Muted voices of millions of Igbo cannot be heard so that fellow Nigerians could understand the degree to which secession by the Igbo represents the popular choice.

“This nation has had to fight a terrible war to preserve the country. The North had paid its dues in that war, as indeed it did in many ways throughout the history of the country. Under our current circumstances, no Nigerian should welcome another war to keep the country together. The North in particular has more than enough challenges, and we recognize that violent secession by any part of Nigeria will compound the problems all Nigerians live with.

“The Forum has arrived at the difficult conclusion that if support for secession among the Igbo is as widespread as it is being made to look, and Igbo leadership appears to be in support of it, then the country should be advised not stand in its way. It will not be the best choice for the Igbo or Nigerians to leave a country we have all toiled to build and a country we all have responsibility to fix, but it will not help a country already burdened with failures on its knees to fight another war to keep the Igbo in Nigeria.

“The Forum insists that attacks and killings of Northerners and Federal Government employees and destruction of National assets must stop. Those who have been involved in it must be arrested and prosecuted. Until the Igbo decide whether it wants to secede or remain part of Nigeria, the law applies to it, and Federal and State Governors who have responsibility to enforce the law and protect citizens must enforce it. We support calls for Northerners who are exposed to harassment and violence to consider relocating to the North.

“Unlike the postures and complacency of the leaders of the South East, we advise that all Igbo and other ethnic groups from the South residing in the North should be accorded the usual hospitality and security.

The Forum believes that it is vital to address amendments to the constitution and achieve major changes in the structure and operations of our Federal system now. Members of the National Assembly elected by Nigerians have lost touch with the people they are supposed to represent. This explains the major distances which exist between the people and the vital national institution which should play a major role mitigating national crises.

“The National Assembly should explore additional avenues for tapping into opinions that can help redress serious limitations to the Federal system before the 2023 elections.

“The North is willing to discuss all matters related to constitutional amendments/ restructuring with the leadership of the country and other groups who see their presence in the future of Nigeria.”

Insecurity: IMHA Exonerates IPOB/ESN, Says It Is Political; Only One Governor At A Time, It Warns

0
Imo State House of Assembly - IMHA

By Charles Igbo

“The whole issue of Insecurity in Imo State has political underpinnings as such, politically instigated and covertly motivated to achieve some political ends

The Imo State House of Assembly, IMHA, has exonerated the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, and its Security Wing, Eastern Security Network, ESN, from the frightening insecurity in the State.

The IMHA in a statement signed by its Chairman, House Committee on Information, Hon. Johnson Duru Iheonukara, said that after a thorough investigation,  “We ( members) have it on good authority that IPOB/ESN to our knowledge and understanding are not organisations founded on the principles of violence cum arms insurrection, rather advocates of Igbo liberation and security through peaceful non-violent means.”

Instead, the IMHA said the situation is politically motivated. It said: “The whole issue of insecurity in Imo State has political underpinnings, as such, politically instigated and covertly motivated to achieve some political ends”

The Assembly, short of pointing accusing fingers at the direction of any politician, or politicians, therefore, warned that there can be only “one Governor and one Government House at a time.”

It said: “The Imo State House of Assembly, makes bold to state that there can only be one Governor and one Government of Imo State at a time, as such, those hell-bent on truncating the peace and tranquility of the State for political reasons should desist forthwith.”

The Assembly said it stood in solidarity with Governor Hope Uzodimma in all his efforts aimed at getting “a first hand security information from the grassroots and proffering plausible solutions to them.”

Following is the full text of the Statement.

“The Imo State House of Assembly after a painstaking investigation and detailed study of the security situation in Imo State hereby issues this press release and states as follows:-

“▪ That the whole issue of insecurity in Imo State has political underpinnings, as such, politically instigated and covertly motivated to achieve some political ends.

“▪ That we have it on good authority that IPOB and the ESN to our knowledge and understanding are not organizations founded on the principles of violence cum armed insurrection, rather advocates of Igbo liberation and security through peaceful non-violent means.

“▪ That the timely passage of the Imo State Security Organization Law by the House was a manifestation of our tacit and absolute support to His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma, in his drive to set up an effective, proactive and grassroot-propelled security architecture for Imo State.

“▪ That the Imo State House of Assembly hereby calls on critical stakeholders, leaders of thought, the Clergy and Traditional Institutions to rally round the government, in her quest to rid the state of elements of destabilization fomenting trouble in our dear state, and to endeavour to convoke meetings of all stakeholders, youths and political gladiators in their respective domains to further sensitize them on the need to refrain from any activities that could further exacerbate the already tensed security situation in the state.

“▪ The Imo State House of Assembly makes bold to state that there can only be one Governor and one Government of Imo State at a time, as such, those hellbent on truncating the peace and tranquility of the state for political reasons should desist forthwith.

“*That we support and encourage the ongoing local government by local government stakeholders interface with His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Imo State, towards getting a first hand security information from the grassroots and proffering plausible solutions to them.

“▪ The Imo State House of Assembly hereby commiserates with the families that have lost their loved ones in the crossfire, including the family of our late colleague, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, who was a former Speaker of the Adamawa House of Assembly.

“▪We call for restraint by security operatives in the discharge of firearms, while imploring them to apply professional conducts in the discharge of their duties in the state at all times.

“*Assembly likewise calls on the law abiding citizens of the state not to be afraid of the presence of security agents in the state, but go about their normal legitimate businesses, because it is for their protection and safety that the government requested for more security agents to be brought in to augment the ones we have in the state already towards having an all-round protection for our people.

“*We commend the commitment and sound leadership being offered by His Excellency, Dist. Sen. Hope Uzodimma, more so at this trying time in the life of this administration, which by no small measures has rekindled hope and assurance of safety and protection to Ndi-Imo-Nile, and so far left no one in doubt of his capabilities and sagacity.

“▪ Finally, we call on Imo youths not to be discouraged by the insecurity in our state but to remain resolute in their support of the efforts of government to ensure peace and tranquility in no distant time, also appealing to them not to be involved in any action that could cause any disaffection between them and the security agents deployed for their protection.

“Thank you all. Imo is firmly in the hands of God, just as we have overcome the challenges thrown our way by enemies of the state. God bless us all.”

However, a member of the now notorious unknown gunmen, a group which has been on a killing and destruction spree in the State, Stanley Osinachi, who was arrested alive when his colleagues, including their leader, Joseph Uka Nnachi, alias Dragon, were gunned down by Security agents, during a failed attack on the Imo State Police Command Headquarters, on Sunday June, 6, confessed he is a member of the ESN, recruited by Dragon.

During the attack, six of them were killed during a crossfire with Security Agents, and a frightening quantity of dangerous weapons,  their operational vehicles, and charms, recovered from them.

Imo State has been under an unprecedented violent attack by gunmen, in as many weeks. A number of innocent people have been killed, including civilians and security personnel. Many Federal facilities, including those of the Police, INEC and Correctional Centre, have been torched.

And, so were the country homes of the Governor and that of the Commissioner for Information and Strategy,  Hon Declan Emelumba.
