CAC Church Attack in Kwara State

By Akinwale Kasali

Following the dastardly attack on worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, Kwara State, the  Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of schools in four Local Government Areas due to the growing security concerns in the affected communities.

The decision was announced by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State, in a circular issued on Wednesday.

According to the circular, signed by NUT Chairman Yusuf Agboola, schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti LGAs are to remain closed until further notice.

Agboola explained that the directive was given by the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development following fresh security threats in Kwara South.

“The decision was occasioned by the security challenges ravaging the area and the efforts of the government to control the situation. Treat this information as important and with the urgency it deserves, as it emanated from the ministry,” the circular read.

School heads and teachers were assured that further instructions would be communicated as the situation develops.

The move follows a deadly attack on a church in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area, on Tuesday night, which left three worshippers dead and over 35 people abducted.

Governor Abdulrazaq had visited the community on Wednesday and announced plans to request the establishment of a Forward Operating Base of the Nigerian Army and a Mobile Police Squadron in Eruku to boost security.

The Governor disclosed that he had discussions with the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, and Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, on the need for urgent security measures to address the crisis in the area.

“It is indeed unfortunate what happened yesterday despite all the effort we have been making. Our main purpose here is to commiserate with the people of the community. All the security agencies are on this. The President had to cancel his trip to the G-20 because of this incident and that of Kebbi State. So the President is aware and we are on top of the situation,” Abdulrazaq said.

Following heated arguments over Court jurisdiction, an angry Justice Mobolaji Omotosho of the Federal High Court on Thursday, ordered that  Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, be bundled out of his courtroom.

The IPOB Leader who

was brought to court ahead of the scheduled judgment, insisted that the Federal High Court lacked the authority to try him.

He had said, “My contention is very simple: this Court lacks jurisdiction to try me”, he stated.

Reading from his motion, he argued that no judgment should be delivered since he had already filed processes at the Court of Appeal.

The prosecution team countered his argument, urging the court to dismiss all the defence applications.

“We appeal to your lordship to dismiss all the applications as they lack merit and do not deserve consideration,” the prosecution lawyer submitted.

Proceedings were briefly disrupted before the Judge ordered that Kanu be taken out of the courtroom, allowing the court to continue with its processes.

Democracy Not Under Any Threat In Nigeria – Wike

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister
Nyesom Wike

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, warned the newly elected Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, against engaging in dangerous rhetorics capable of eroding the unity and corporate existence of Nigeria.

This is as he insisted that there is neither genocide against Christians, nor is the country’s democracy under any threat.

The Source reports that Turaki had, in the wake of the struggle for the control of the Wadata Plaza, National Headquarters of the PDP, with the Wike-backed faction of the Party on Monday, called on the international community, particularly the United States of America, USA, President, Donald Trump, to not just wade in over alleged mass killings of Christians in the country, but intervene to save democracy from collapse under the weight of President Bola Tinubu’s administration perceived interference in the affairs of opposition parties.

But speaking during a courtesy visit to his office by the Board of South South Development Commission SSDC, Wike, a principal actor in the crisis tearing the PDP apart, maintained that Turaki’s call on Trump to intervene in the internal affairs of Nigeria tantamount to a serious threat to national security.

The FCT Minister insisted that if there is any threat to democracy, it was the refusal of Turaki and his enablers to obey two Federal High Court orders, halting the Ibadan National Convention of the PDP.

He described as the height of impunity, the decision of the PDP to go ahead with the Convention after two Courts of competent jurisdiction had ruled otherwise.

“You are calling on President Trump to come and save your democracy when you could not obey a simple court judgement.

“Now, you are turning it around against a Government. What is their business? You cannot keep your house in order; you are blaming an outsider for not keeping your house in order.

“Who does that? You are calling on Trump to come, and save your democracy. Our democracy is not under threat. People went to Court to challenge what you were doing. Then you think, as usual, you can engage in impunity. We can’t continue that way”, Wike stated.

Faulting the alleged genocide against Christians in the country, the FCT Minister described Turaki’s statement as not only reckless but deserving of investigation by security agencies.

According to him, the new PDP Chairman’s comments amounted to claims that the Government of Nigeria is presently engaged in genocidal attack on Christians.

“You came out and made a statement on national television claiming genocide against Christians. In essence, you have come out to tell the world that what this Government is doing is carrying out genocide against Christians. And where are the security agencies?

“For somebody to make that kind of statement, he is supposed to be invited by security agencies to explain more on what he knows about genocide against any group. Here, nobody has invited him. But if it is Wike, oh they will say ‘kill him’ he further stated.

A statement from Ismail Mudashiru, the media aide to the Deputy Senate President, informed that  over 200 State Lawmakers who were led by a former Speaker of House, Rt Hon Abdulaziz Gafasa, gave the endorsement during a courtesy call on Barau.

According to the Legislators, Senator Barau, so far, remains the only credible, most acceptable, and marketable aspirant within the Kano State APC for the State’s top job.

“We are here to tell you that we are solidly behind you for three reasons. One, you have positively impacted the lives of our people across the three Senatorial Districts of Kano State.

“Two, you have been a lifeline to our party, the APC. Thirdly, you have positively touched our lives even though some of us are not from the same Senatorial District as you. This has made you the most marketable aspirant in APC ” Gafasa stated .

Similarly ,the recently elected member of the State House of Assembly, representing Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency, Hon Garba Yau Gwarmai, expressed their readiness and commitment to mobilize the people, especially at the grassroots, for the Deputy Senate President’s gubernatorial ambition.

He emphasized that the endorsement from the state Lawmakers is an eloquent testimony to his track record of outstanding service to the people over the years .

“This endorsement is based on your track record of outstanding service over the years. You have been making positive impact on the lives of our people.

“You have done well in all spheres of our State. This is why we want you to govern Kano, our beloved State”,  Hon Gwarmai noted.

Responding, the Deputy Senate President, while appreciating the Legislators for the visit, support and understanding, however called for concerted efforts from all to rescue and restore the glory days of Kano State.

“We have to work hard and make sacrifices to restore the glory days of our State. It is a thing of joy that you have come together to salvage our State from the ongoing misgovernance. Let us continue to work together to rescue our beloved State”, Barau stated .

The Source reports that the endorsement is coming at a time the Deputy Senate President is yet to officially declare his interest to contest the polls .

However, there are strong indications that he will be throwing his hat into the ring as all his actions and activities in the last one year point to his interest in occupying the State’s seat of power.

“On Your Mandate We Shall Stand”: NJI Says Judiciary Had No Control Over Musical Selections Of Guards Brigade Band

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun

By Adesina Soyooye

The National Judicial Institute, NJI, has risen in strong defence of the Nigerian Judiciary, and Nigerian Judges, over the singing of a political song, “On Your Mandate We Shall Stand” at the All Nigerian Judges Conference, declared open by President Bola Tinubu. The song is seen as pledging allegiance to the President instead of the Constitution and the Republic.

Condemnation, like claps of thunder, had greeted the playing of the political song at the Conference.

The Guards Brigade Band had, briefly, played the song as the President walked down from  the podium after delivering his address to the Judges.

As he walked back, the Judges, as is required by protocol, stood up in reverence to the office of the President.

But since then, not a few Nigerians have come down hard on them, insisting that they have committed sacrilege and, finally; sold out to the President.

Activist and Law Professor, Chidi Odinkalu, in angry reaction, said  “The Judiciary has defected to the APC.” He had a number of supporters. Some argued that the Judges should have openly protested, or sat down, while the song was being played, instead of being on their feet and joining in singing the chorus.

However, the NJI has dismissed the allegation against the Judges as unfounded, bundle of lies, mischievous, and a deliberate effort to run down the image of the Nigerian Judiciary.

In a statement issued by its Head, Information, Media and Public Relations, Kolade Umoru, the NJI said nothing could be further from the truth.

The statement explained that no Judge sang the “On Your Mandate  We Shall Stand” song, and insisted that the only song they sang was the National Anthem.

The statement also explained that the Judges neither requested for the song, nor  suggest to the Guards Brigade Band, to play the song. More important, they had no control in t choosing/selecting for the Band, which songs to play or not, as it was strictly a protocol affair.

It said: “The Judiciary had no control over the musical selections of the Guards Brigade which operates under military ceremonial procedures.”

It further explained why the Judges were on their feet. “Out of due deference to the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Judges rose to their feet as the President walked to the podium.”

The statement vouched for the integrity and non-partisanship of the Judiciary and urged members of the public and the media “to exercise restraint, verify information, and avoid amplifying falsehoods capable of undermining the integrity of national institutions.”

Following, is the full text of the statement.

RE-FALSE REPORTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA REGARDING THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE 2025 ALL NIGERIA JUDGES CONFERENCE

“The attention of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), has been drawn to the several misleading and inaccurate reports  circulating on social media suggesting that Judges in attendance at the opening ceremony of the 2015 All Judges Conference sang a political chorus (“On Your Mandate We Shall Stand”) in allegiance to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“This claim is entirely false, unfounded, and does not reflect the events that transpired at the ceremony.

“For the avoidance of doubt:

“1.The National Anthem was the only song rendered collectively by all participants at both the commencement and conclusion of the Opening Ceremony.

“2. No Judge in attendance sang, or chanted any political song at any point during the programme.

“3. The brief rendition of the tune “On Your Mandate” was not initiated, requested, or endorsed by the Judiciary. It was played solely by the Guards Brigade Band as part of their ceremonial protocol to usher the President to the podium for his address. The Judiciary had no control over the musical selections of the Brigade, which operates under military ceremonial procedures.

“4. Out of due deference to the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Judges rose to their feet as the President walked to the podium.

“5. The Judiciary remains strictly non-partisan, deeply committed to constitutional neutrality, and wholly insulated from political activities or symbols of political allegiance.

“The 2025 All Nigeria Judges Conference is a statutory and professional gathering focused on strengthening the justice system and reinforcing public confidence in the Judiciary. Any attempt to distort the solemnity of the event or attribute political motives to judicial officers is unfortunate, misleading, and a disservice to the public.

“We urge members of the public and the media to exercise restraint, verify information, and avoid amplifying falsehoods capable of undermining the integrity of national institutions.

“The Judiciary will continue to uphold its oath of office with dignity, independence, and unwavering fidelity to the Constitution.

The exercise which took place at the Government House Owerri was carefully designed to achieve inclusion of the vulnerable persons in the scheme of things of government, with emphasis on lifting such population in Imo State out of poverty.

Represented at the occasion by the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, Mrs Tinubu who is the Chairman of RHI gave out different food items and cash to the beneficiaries before a large audience of invitees that included National and State government officials.

Speaking at the occasion, Mrs. Tinubu’s representative, Hajia Shettima, emphasised the need to empower women, citing their critical roles in shaping the nation’s future.

She encouraged women in general to take on leadership roles, embracing their unique strengths and seeking opportunities to make a positive impact in their various homes.

Senator Oluremi disclosed that RHI plans to launch more economic empowerment programmes, including grants, for persons living with disabilities, “as the initiative aims to promote inclusive growth and social protections for all Nigerians.”

While calling for collaboration and unwavering commitment to creating a better future, the wife of the President expressed gratitude to organisations and persons who have remained committed to supplying food items monthly to support the Renewed Hope Initiative ideals.

She used the occasion to announce the upcoming events of the RHI, including the closing ceremony of its Women’s ICT training programme and the launching of environment clubs in Schools to promote cleanliness and tree planting.

In her remarks, wife of the Governor of Imo State who is also the Secretary of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Barr. (Mrs.) Chioma Uzodimma said the food outreach programme organised by the RHI under the leadership of Senator Tinubu, was borne out of deep empathy and concern for the welfare of all Nigerians facing difficult circumstances.

Barr. Uzodimma noted that the food outreach programme was “designed to restore hope, strengthen communities and affirm shared humanity,” not just in Imo State but elsewhere in Nigeria.

She expressed gratitude to partners, donors, and everyone involved in making the initiative a success, emphasising that “true development is a collective effort.”

“This programme is not just charity, but a gesture to remind beneficiaries that they are not alone,” the Imo First Lady stressed, reminding them that their “strength and challenges are recognised.”

Some of the beneficiaries, Okoro Sylvia (Ehime Mbano), Fidelia Madumere (Ihitte-Uboma), Ibeziem Chika (Onuimo), all special citizens, among others who spoke to newsmen, expressed their profound joy to Mrs Tinubu, Mrs. Shettima, and Mrs. Uzodimma for their show of love towards their well-being, that of the widows and orphans across the 36 States of Nigeria.

They prayed God to bless and imbue them with more wisdom to pilot the affairs of the nation, noting, joyfully, that the food items they received will go a long way in alleviating the needs of their families.
