A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, has ordered that a former Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, (JAMB), Professor Dibu Ojerinde, be remanded in prison custody pending the time his application for bail will be determined.

The Court annulled the earlier administrative bail granted the former JAMB Registrar, despite pleadings by his Counsel.

Ojerinde was arraigned before the Federal High Court on Tuesday on 18-count charges of fraud.

Although the ex-JAMB Registrar denied all the charges, he was ordered to be taken to custody till Thursday when his lawyer, Peter Olorunmisola (SAN), will formally apply for his bail.

The counsel made desperate efforts to convince Justice Obiora Egwuatu to allow Ojerinde to continue with the administrative bail granted him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The Judge turned down the request on the ground that such was not grantable having been arraigned in court.

The plea that he be allowed home to enable him attend another trial in Minna, Niger State, on criminal charges was also rejected by the court.

I Will Destroy PDP If …” – Former Governor Ayo Fayose

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose  hinted on Tuesday of his possibility of joining the ruling All Progressive Congress, (APC) before next year’s Governorship election in the state.

The election has been fixed for July next year by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) as incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi’s tenure will terminate in October of same year.

Mr Fayose, while addressing his supporters at his country home, Afao Ekiti said in case his annoited candidate for the election loses the primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he would have no option than to decamp to APC.

Describing the PDP in Ekiti as his major asset, he maintained that he would not allow anyone to destroy it.

Mr Fayose vowed that he would ensure his preferred candidate, Bisi Kolawole, currently state chairman of PDP, emerges as the next governorship candidate of the party in the State.

The former Governor stated that should Kolawole loses at primaries, he would join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Another former governor of the State, Chief Segun Oni is in the race for the governorship ticket of the party.

Oni had decamped from the APC, in which he was a National officer to return to the PDP in order to be able to contest next year’s governorship election.

Fayose had however presented Kolawole to his supporters across the 177 political wards in the state in preparation for his victory in the party’s primary.

With the primary billed to come up early next year, the former governor encouraged his followers to work closely with the various delegates to ensure victory for Kolawole and see that those that won’t listen to him do not win the election.

“My people, do not be afraid of the primary election ahead, you will all recall I bought the forms for the majority of the party’s executives from the ward level to the state level.

“I know some of them have already betrayed me, but I have no fear about that. Don’t forget I am Peter the rock, my anointed candidate Bisi Kolawole will do all his best to win and if the worst happens, I will pack my load and work with Governor Fayemi.

“I will better destroy the party than allow those who won’t listen to me to win the main election.

“I will advise you all to go home and work with delegates, don’t allow them to hijack this my greatest asset which is the Ekiti PDP.”

At the end of his second term of office, Fayose had single handedly picked his deputy then, Prof Olusola Eleka, as his successor.

With threat and intimidation, as well as state apparatus, Prof Eleka won the PDP primary and slugged it out with incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi at the election but lost to him.

Mr Fayose and his erstwhile deputy, Prof Eleka and annoited candidate have fallen apart.

Prof Eleka is one of the aspirants jostling for the PDP Governorship ticket against the wish of his former godfather.

Kanu’s Arrest: Canadian Minister, Soyinka Drag FG

By James Orji

A top Canadian official, Kelechi Madu has condemned the manner of arrest of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu by the federal government.

Madu who is the Minister of Justice of the province of Alberta, Canada said the arrest fell below international standards.

He made the assertion on the crest of Professor Wole Soyinka’s comment, that the manner of arrest of the IPOB leader could end up embarrassing the Buhari administration.

The minister of justice and the Attorney General of the federation, Abubakar Malami, said the IPOB leader, who is now being tried for treasonable felony and other serious offences, was intercepted by Nigeria security forces and Interpol. He, however, did not mention the exact location where Kanu was arrested before his repatriation to Nigeria, few days ago.

Kanu lawyers said he was picked up in Kenya, though the Uhuru Kenyatta government has denied such suggestions.

Reacting to the IPOB leader’s arrest, the Canadian official said the manner of his arrest fell short of international democratic standards, adding that the international community must sanction the Nigerian government for breaking international law.

He also described Malami as unfit for his position as the nation chief law officer, noting that he’s a disgrace to his profession.

He said if reports that Kanu was abducted from Kenya were true, Malami was not only a disgrace to the rule of law but also not worthy to be a public officer.

Madu said “The Attorney General of Nigeria, Abubakar Malami is a disgrace to the rule of law, and not worthy to be an officer of the court. He has shown himself to be a bigot who does not understand what it means to live in a pluralistic society governed by the dictates of the rule of law,” he wrote.

He urge the international community to punish Nigeria for violating international best practices in the manner Kanu was repatriated to the country.

Madu also  said, “Nigeria is burning, and the people of Nigeria, except those who are holding the country down, wants out. You cannot destroy the hope and aspiration of a people destined for greatness and expect them to bow down in servitude. You cannot destroy a generation of people and expect them to not fight for their freedom.

“The power of guns, state-sponsored terrorism will not achieve peace or the preservation of Nigeria.

“The Igbos and other ethnic groups in Nigeria who are calling for Nigeria to be renegotiated do not seek violence or war. They seek peace. They seek progress and the advancement of their people. They seek fairness, safety, equity, and justice for their people. They seek the opportunity for their children to grow up and achieve their God-given abundant potential.

“They seek the rise of a people with the work ethic, intellect and capacity to be a truly global superpower on the continent of Africa. They seek dignity over inhumane treatment. They seek life over death.

“Friends of the black world must unite and liberate the people of Nigeria from this bondage and from the claws of corrupt and inept politicians who have no business being near the corridor of Nigeria’s political power.”

Igboho: Soyinka Urges FG To Tender Unreserved Apologies To Igboho, Faults FG’s Partisanship

….Queries Why Gun Wielding Herdsmen Werent Called Terrorists

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has condemned the attack and invasion by the Department of State Security, DSS, at the house of Yoruba Nation Activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, last week in Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State Capital, as unwarranted and an abuse of the fundamental Human Rights of Igboho.

Soyinka urged the Federal Government to tender an unreserved apology to Igboho as it is not criminal or illegal for anyone to express intention to leave any Federation.

Speaking in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC News Pidgin, Soyinka gave examples of people who left a Federation or a union to form or join another state including the Bakassi people of Southern Nigeria who seceded to Cameroon.

“How can you place the will for separation as a criminal act? That kind of language doesn’t exist in the constitution, it doesn’t exist in law. It does not exist in the catalogue of immoralities because it is not an immoral act or position to say that you want to stop being part of an entity or you want to join an entity,” he said.

He said the raid was outrageous, bizarre.

“More important, for me, is the position of the Government, saying that the ‘existence of these weapons’ proved that he (Igboho) was planning war against the state. That position, very loaded statement, was simply deliberate to conflict issues. It was to obscure the fact that Igboho and other people, myself included, have been decrying the loss of lives of law-abiding citizens, farmers especially all over the nation. Not just civilians, (Ex-Minister of Defense, Gen. Theophilus) Danjuma (retd.), told the people, ‘Don’t trust the military anymore, defend yourself’. Some other voices like governors have made similar statements.

“Now, Igboho, even if he had those weapons, he is claiming that his mission is to liberate his people from the tyranny of squatters, who now become violent overlords, and he has a good cause in that sense. Testimonies of farmers who have been brutalised, dehumanised by these squatters, who have acknowledged and identified themselves as Fulani, over decades of this anomalous kind of situation in which the people did not receive the necessary, mandatory and entitled defence and protection by the security forces, in which sometimes, it is the victims who’ve been jailed, the recent case in Ibarapa for instance, is a personal testimony of those who were arrested and detained by the police simply for going to challenge those who were terrorising and raping their women.

“So, now, you have a situation where the government is saying the ‘existence of these weapons’ means that Igboho is planning an armed insurrection against the state. The whole thing from beginning to the end just stinks: the raid, the motivation has become very implausible.”

The Ogun State born Political and Social Commentator faulted the Federal Government for also not describing AK-47-wielding herdsmen as terrorists waging a violent insurrection against the Nigerian state.

“My advice to the government is that they should stop pursuing Igboho as a criminal because you have begun by acting in a criminal fashion against him,” he stated.

“If and when Igboho comes to trial, I guarantee you the Government will be very embarrassed”, Soyinka concluded.

Lagos Assembly Passes Bill To Stop Parading Of Suspects

Lagos State House of Assembly

By Akinwale Kasali

The norm by the Lagos State Police Command to always parade suspects before the Media without their first being found guilty of the crime allegedly committed, has been scrapped by the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The Lagos Assembly did so on Monday, July 5th, 2021, when it passed an amended version of the Criminal Justice Law of the state barring the Police from, henceforth, parading suspects before the media.

The bill was passed at a sitting presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni

Section 9(A) of the newly passed bill states: “As from the commencement of this law, the police shall refrain from parading any suspect before the media.”

The bill further stipulates conditions under which a policeman can arrest without warrant one of which is that a person must be reasonably suspected to unlawfully be in possession of firearms or other such dangerous instruments.

A subsection of the bill also barred the police or any other agency from arresting a person “in lieu of any other person in a criminal matter.”

The bill adds that a person who is arrested “shall be given reasonable facilities for obtaining legal advice, bail or making arrangements for defence or release.

The Bill stipulates that a suspect should be “accorded humane treatment, with the right to dignity of person; not be subjected to any form of torture, cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment; be brought before the court as prescribed by this law or any other written law; or be released conditionally or unconditionally.”

After a voice vote, the Deputy Speaker directed the acting Clerk of the House, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, to transmit the bill to the governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for assent.

There seems to be respite for some kidnapped Students of Bethel Baptist School in Maraban Rido in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following disclosure by Police authorities in the State that 26 Students have been rescued.

Kaduna State Police Spokesperson, Muhammed Jalige, confirmed the rescue of the students, but did not disclose the number of Students abducted by the bandits early Monday, the morning.

In a coordinated attack, an attack to, also, abduct the students of the nearby Faith Secondary School was foiled by soldiers. Faith Secondary School is owned by Bishop Oyedepo’s Winners Chapel.

Speculations are rife that at, least, one  hundred students were whisked away by the bandits, in an invasion that left two people dead.

According to Jalige, “A joint team of the Nigeria Police, Army, and Navy Operatives on getting information about the attack immediately mobilised to the area with a mission to rescue the abducted students unhurt.

“Security operatives gave the bandits a hot pursuit occasioned by a tactical application of weapons and succeeded in rescuing twenty-six (26) of them, including a female teacher safely”.

Jalige stressed further that the rescue operation is still ongoing to ensure that all victims are safely returned.

He encouraged parents not to be deterred by the recent bandits’ activities in the state targeting schools and learning institutions as strategic measures will be put in place to forestall further occurrences of such dastardly acts of criminality against innocent children.

He stressed that the command is saddened by the incident and called on all stakeholders to unite “particularly at this very critical time to safeguard schools in order to guarantee a safe and secured learning environment and other meaningful businesses”.

In the past six months Kaduna, Kaduna State has witnessed four mass abductions of students in their schools.

2023: I Am Not Floating Any New Political Party – Obasanjo

By Ayodele Oni

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday reacted to social media report that he was planning to form a new political party, ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The former Nigerian leader, in a statement, reinstated his earlier position that he was done with politics and has no intention to form a new political party.

This was contained in a statement, titled, ‘Obasanjo Not Forming Political Party,’ signed by his Special Assistant on Media Affairs,  Mr Kehinde Akinyemi.

The statement explained that President Obasanjo, who is currently in Kabul, Afghanistan, as a guest of President Ashraf Ghani, has declared that the report was false, maintaining that there was “no plan to float a new political party now or in near future.

“In my part of the world, when you say goodnight in a place, you do not go back there and say good evening.

“The one who reported that may need to visit Yaba Left. And those who believe it can believe that their mothers are men.

“I’m done with partisan politics, but by my position in Nigeria and Africa and without being immodest and indeed in the world, my door must be opened and it is open to any individual or group of individuals who want to seek my opinion, view or advice on any issue or matter and I will respond to the best of my ability, without being part of that individual or group.”

The report had it that two ex-Governors have been recruiting prominent politicians into a new political party, being sponsored by Chief Obasanjo.
