By Stanley Ekpenyong, Calabar

Men of Cross River state police Command and crime reporters were awe-struck Tuesday during a parade of criminals at the command headquarters, Calabar, as they listened to a blood-chilling murder confession of a 34 year old man, Christian Edem-Eyo of Calabar South local government area of the state.

Also paraded was a 45 old pastor of new generation Church, who was allegedly caught with a human skull.

According to the police,  Edem-Eyo,34, allegedly murdered Uduak Effiong Okpo, 65, and buried her head and the body separately on June 23, 2021.

In his chilling confession, the suspect claimed he murdered Okpo because she belonged to the spiritual world.

“I killed Uduak Okpo because she belonged to the marine world. She was terrorising me spiritually in the compound. She was making my manhood to rise spiritually, that was why I killed her,” he said.

The pastor, Michael Bassey of United Evangelical Church, was arrested for unlawful possession of a skull at No. 56, Uwanse, off Asuquo Ekpo Street, in Calabar South Local Government Area of the state. The state Commissioner of Police, Sikiru Akande, said Bassey was arrested upon a complaint from a concerned citizen on threat to life.

Akande: “The suspect was arrested with one human skull tied with the complainant’s picture and carved human image with red clothes.

“Investigation is still ongoing and the suspect will be arraigned in court.

2023: Northern Group Insists Presidency Remains Open Contest

Northern Elders Forum

By Ayodele Oni

The Northern Elders Forum, (NEF), a pressure political group, has declared that nobody can railroad the North on who to vote for as President in 2023.

It  has, therefore, rejected the position of the Southern Governors Forum, (SGF), that the South should produce the President come 2023.

This was one of the resolutions of the Southern Governors after their meeting in Lagos early this week.

The Forum, through its Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, pointed out that as far as the North was concerned, the idea that it would be indirectly threatened or intimidated or blackmailed into yielding an office which ought to be settled democratically is not acceptable.

It described the decision of the southern Governors as “an expression of sentiment that could be best discussed within a political process.

“We are running a democratic government and decisions over where the next president comes from are basically decisions that will be made by voters exercising their rights to choose which candidate best serves their interest.”

Dr Baba-Ahmed explained that the Southern Governors come from the two dominant parties: APC and PDP, saying that they must have some influence in those parties.

He noted that the way it should be done was that the Southern Governors should influence their parties to zone the Presidency to Southern States and then work to convince Nigerian voters from all parts of the country to vote for that candidate.

He opined that the democratic rights of Nigerian citizens to vote for a candidate cannot be snatched by threats or intimidation, stressing that politicians were becoming very lazy to think they will be given leadership in a manner that suggests an ultimatum.

The spokesman maintained that it would only support a candidate that will unite the country irrespective of where he or she comes from.

“The Southern Governors and their collaborators should not attempt to hoist an incompetent leadership on the nation in the name of rotation.

“The North will not accept this arrangement and shall be vehemently resisted.

“We specifically warn Kashim Shettima, Nasir El-Rufai and other Northern collaborators, of the futility of pursuing their personal exploits for the Vice Presidency through this impossible battle to hand over our future and the entire North to interests that see a united and numerically superior North as a major political obstacle.

“The extent of their collaboration would not go unnoticed, and in the fullness of time, they will be called to account.”

A number of Northerners, including El-Rufai, former Governors of Kano and Borno States, Senators Shekarau and Shettima, and former Secretary to Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, amongst others, have canvasses for a President of Southern extraction in 2003.

Breaking: Haiti President Killed, Wife Shot

By James Orji

President Jovenel Moïse of Haiti has been assassinated. He was killed by some gun men who stormed his private home on the outskirts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, according to the country’s prime minister Calude Joseph.

The president’s wife, Martine Moïse, was also shot in the attack, and her present condition is not immediately clear.

According to the Prime Minister “A group of unidentified individuals, some of them speaking Spanish, attacked the private residence of the president of the republic and thus fatally wounded the head of state,” the prime minister said.

“The country’s security situation is under the control of the Haitian police and the armed forces of Haiti,” he added, saying that all measures were being taken to protect the nation.

The news of the death of the country’s president has sent shock waves into the Caribbean island which has a long history of dictatorships and coups, and democracy has never fully taken root.

The country has been rocked recently by protests against the president’s rule, and has also has seen a surge in gang activity.

Didier le Bret, the former French ambassador to Haiti, told France 24 that an already volatile political situation threatened to spin further out of control. A new prime minister, Dr. Ariel Henry, was scheduled to be sworn into office on Wednesday. Because that had not happened, it was not clear who was running the country, he said.

“It is a big question mark,” he said, warning that the situation could lead to wider violence.

Moïse had been struggling to quell growing public anger over his attempt to hold onto power despite the opposition’s insistence that his term had expired.

He has been ruling by decree for more than a year. Many, including jurists, contend that his term ended in February.

The opposition said that Mr. Moïse’s five-year term should have ended on Feb. 7, five years to the day since his predecessor, Michel Martelly, stepped down. When Moïse refused to leave office, thousands of Haitians took to the streets, setting trash and tires on fire as they demanded his resignation.

The Command  has warned against any gathering, under whatever guise.

While directing the Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Heads of Tactical Units to monitor the activities of cultists and intensify patrols across the state, Odumosu reiterates the command’s zero tolerance for cultism and other social vices in Lagos State.

Food Scarcity Hits Bandits

By Tosin Olatokunbo

After kidnapping over 100 students from the Bethel Baptist High School, Kaduna on Monday, the bandits who carried out the evil operation have suddenly realized that they cannot survive without food. The criminals are now demanding for food items such as rice, beans and condiments to feed the students, even though analysts insist that the bandits are facing serious shortage of food supply in their hideouts.

Feeding has become a big problem for the bandits, analysts say, as security agencies tighten noose on their food supply and sponsors.

On June 8, security operatives arrested one Hassan Magaji, alongside his associates Abubakar Ibrahim, Auwal Abubakar and Ibrahim Kabiru who were supplying bread to bandits in Kaduna state.

During his testimony, Magaji who owns a bakery said he made N400, 000 monthly from selling bread to the bandits.

“My relative, Mustafa Magaji, who owns several bread factories, visited in 2018 and taught me how to bake cakes. I used the N21,000 that I was able to save to start the business and now I make at least N400, 000 a month,” the suspect said.

The bandits invaded Maraban Rido in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State and abducted many students some of who later escaped, and are now with their parents.

According to Punch a member of the school management confided in the newspaper that 121 students of the school were in their custody and needed to be fed.

The official said the bandits first called on Monday and allowed one of the students to speak to a top member of the school management.

It was learnt that they called again on Tuesday and allowed two senior students, a boy and a girl, to speak to a top official of the school.

It was gathered that the senior students confirmed that there were 121 of them with the bandits.

The official said, “When the phone rang, the bandits first spoke to the member of the management. They said a senior student was directed to count the students in their custody and the boy confirmed that 121 students were being held. They also asked for food such as rice and beans as well oil to feed the students.

“Later, the senior student, who counted the abductees, said there were 121 of them with the bandits,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the management of the school and parents of the abducted students met on Tuesday on ways to rescue the abductees, after the management confirmed that 121 students were being held by the bandits.

The proprietor of the school, who is also the President, Kaduna Baptist Conference, Rev Ishaya Jangado, made the confirmation.

Jangado confirmed to newsmen that no fewer than 121 students were in the custody of the kidnappers.

He said 28 students were “recovered” on Monday after the bandits attacked the school.

He explained that the total number of students in the boarding house was 154 and that 28 were recovered, while 121 were in the bandits’ custody. He, however, did not provide any explanation on the remaining five students.

He said, “For now, we know that we have 154 students in the school hostel and yesterday (Monday) after the exchange of fire between the soldiers and the bandits, we came to the school and recovered 28 students; some of them were hit in many places. In the course of being taken away, some of them escaped and they came back to the school.

“So, the total number of students we recovered yesterday (Monday) was 28 and today (Tuesday), by the grace of God, we got a call from the bandits and they assured us that our children are well and doing okay.

“In fact, we had the privilege of speaking with a few of them. They counted themselves in the jungle and they gave us information that they were 121, and when we put the number together with what we have recovered, we discovered that the number is exactly the same as the number of students we have in the hostel,” he said.

Onochie’s INEC Position: To be Or Not

Laureta Onochie

By James Orji

Lauretta Onochie’s membership of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC is facing serious opposition from the civil society organisations, CSO who cite her membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC as a good reason to disqualify her as a member of the electoral body.

President Muhammadu Buhari, had on October 13, 2020 written a letter to the Senate seeking the confirmation of Onochie, his Personal Assistant on Social Media as a resident electoral commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission representing Delta State.

Buhari said her appointment is pursuant to paragraph 14 of part 1f of the first schedule of the 1999 constitution.

But this has not gone down well with rights groups in the country who insist that her appointment violates the provision of the Electoral Act which says a member of a political party should not be a member of the electoral umpire. The president has stuck to his gun, refusing to withdraw Onochie’s nomination into the electoral body.

The rights bodies are not backing down either as they have now dragged President Buhari to court over the matter, even as the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has directed the Senate Committee on INEC to screen the nominees, which also include  Mohammed Sani (Katsina), Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti), and Seidu Ahmed (Jigawa) as resident electoral commissioners.

Joined in the suit are Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the federation and Minister of Justice, the senate of the federal republic of Nigeria, and Kabiru Gaya, chairman of the Senate committee on INEC.

The CSOs include the International Press Centre, Centre for Citizens with Disability, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, Incorporated Trustees of Albino Foundation, Incorporated Trustees of Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, and Incorporated Trustees of Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa.

In a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/604/2021, filed before a federal high court in Abuja on Tuesday, the CSOs are asking the court to determine whether the president “can nominate a card-carrying member or members of his political party or any other political party in Nigeria, as a national commissioner or resident electoral commissioner for the independent national electoral commission”, contrary to Sections 14 (2a), 14 (3), 14 (3b), 14 (4) and Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended in 2011).

The applicants are also asking the court to declare the nomination of “Lauretta Onochie, a well-known Member of the All Progressives Congress and current serving personal assistant on social media to the 1st defendant (Buhari), as a national commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission”, as “wrongful, illegal, null and void and same nullified”.

The litigants also asked the court for an order of perpetual injunction “restraining the 3rd and 4th defendants (the senate and Kabiru Gaya) from referring, considering, screening, deliberating or confirming the nomination of Ms Lauretta Onochie”.

In the affidavits deposed by Ezenwa Nwagwu, board member of the incorporated trustees of YIAGA Africa Initiative, in support of the originating summons, the plaintiffs cite some reasons why Onochie should not be a member of INEC.

They include “That her criticism and constant denigration of political opponents cannot allow such opponents to be at ease seeing a member of another political party presiding as a supposed unbiased umpire.

“That based on the various baseless, bigoted and inaccurate activities of Ms Lauretta Onochie, especially on the social media, she is not a person of integrity capable of occupying a sensitive and trusted position as that of a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The presidential aide has never denied her membership of the ruling APC which her critics say disqualifies her to be a member of the body that conducts election in the country.

In a suit marked CV/852/16, filed by Onochie, in January 2016 against one Emeka Ugwuonye, whom she accused of defaming her by referring to her as a trafficker of young girls for international prostitution, the presidential adviser described herself as a “volunteer at the Buhari Support Organisation (BSO)”. The BSO is made up of staunch supporters of President Buhari.

Many Nigerians are patiently awaiting the decision of the Senate on the issue.

Ortom Backs Colleagues Over Anti Open Grazing Laws, Rotational Presidency

By Akinwale Kasali

Following the position and unanimous decision of the Southern Governors Forum on Anti-Open Grazing Law and the insistence that the President emerges from the region, at the meeting held yesterday in Lagos, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has described the decision as bold and patriotic.

Governor Ortom said the position of the Southern Governors Forum to enact laws to ban open grazing of livestock in the region will bring an end to the lingering crisis caused by armed herdsmen.

The Governor also lauds his counterparts in Southern Nigeria for backing their May 11 Asaba declaration against open grazing with the resolve to legally prohibit nomadic cattle rearing; a resolution which conforms with the global best practice of animal husbandry.

In a Statement released to the Media and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, he commended the Southern Governors Forum for their position on rotation of the Presidency between the north and south, beginning from 2023.

“Governor Ortom believes that only equity, fairness and justice can strengthen the unity of Nigeria, give all citizens a sense of belonging and reduce tensions across the country”.

He also re-echoed his call on the Federal Government to respect the 1999 Constitution (as amended) regarding fundamental human rights, the rule of law and federal character.

Restating his commitment to speaking out against injustice he quotess Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr who stated that, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Governor Ortom reaffirmed his belief in Nigeria’s unity and expressed optimism that the country will overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger as a great Nation.

Igboho: Yoruba Group Says 14 Detained Persons Denied Access To Lawyers

By Ayodele Oni

The Yoruba Nation Global Directorate (YNGD), one of the groups, canvassing for Yoruba self independence, has alleged that those arrested during a swoop on Chief Sunday Adeyemo, (Igboho) house last weekend are being denied access to their lawyers.

The Directorate has, therefore, threatened to take legal action if the 12 detained Igboho’s aides are not released unconditionally from the cell of Department of State Services, (DSS).

In a statement in Akure on Tuesday, the Directorate described as illegal the arrest and detention of Amoda Babatunde a.k a Lady K and 11 others by the agents of the Federal government.

It claimed that one of the Counsels, Mr Ayo Ogunleye, said he was denied access to see them (his clients) after spending several hours on Monday 5 July 2021 at the office of the DSS in Abuja.

The Information department of the directorate stated further that “the 49 other peaceful protesters arrested by the Police in Lagos on 3rd July, 2021, were taken to court on Monday (5 July 2021). Curiously, the police took them to court on a holding charge by an ex-parte application.

“They were not granted bail. However, a lawyer, Mr. Adelawal Bamgboye, one of those arrested, was granted bail on self-recognition by the presiding judge.

“Curiously, the suspects were arraigned before the judge, while their lawyers were waiting at the detention house for the accused to be moved to the court.”

Chief Raymond Olaiya, representing the Directorate and the Coalition of Yoruba Interest Groups, said an application for bail would be presented to the court shortly. The matter has been adjourned to 19 July 2021.

ADP Chairman Lambast Southern Governors Over Position On 2023 Presidency, Anti-Grazing Law, Alleges Gang Up Against President Buhari

Sani Yabagi - ADP

By Akinwale Kasali

“They Are Not Different From Sunday Igboho, Nnamdi Kanu”

Sani Yabagi, the National Chairman of Action Democratic Party, has lashed the Southern Governors Forum over its position on the 2023 Presidency and the Anti grazing law.

Yabagi alleged that the Governors are plotting and ganging up against the President Muhammadu Buhari administration and Northerners.

He described the Governors of Southern extraction as behaving like Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Yabagi, who was ADP’s Presidential candidate in the 2019 election, described the meeting of Southern Governors as a gang up against Northern Nigeria, adding that the Governors are not different from agitators calling for the balkanisation of Nigeria.

“All the things listed in that communiqué from their meeting seems to be a kind of ganging up against the North.

“When you look at the grazing issue, insecurity, the issue of politics of 2023, how can we have elected officials, governors for that matter, coming in this manner to emphasise things that divides us? Not talking about things that unites the country beats my imagination.”

“It is unfortunate that we don’t have governors today coming together on issues of principle. These Governors are not anything better than Igboho or Kanu or any person’s not elected to protect the nation.

“By now we shouldn’t be talking about these dichotomies that have nothing to do with good governance”, Yabagi added.

He further said Southern Governors should be careful not to scare Northerners who control the chunk of the votes that will determine whether power shifts to the south or remain in the North.

“I think we are getting it wrong and the earlier these governors wake up to their responsibilities of ensuring that this country remains one strong insolvable the better for everybody.

“The way they are going will scare the North and the North in fact controls the largest chunk of the vote they need to become the president of this country,” Mr Yabagi warned.

In a communiqué signed by Southern Governors’ Forum , it unanimously rejected the revenue sharing formula contained in the recently passed Petroleum Industry Bill, insisted on ban on open grazing and electronic transmission of election results and that southern region must produce the next president in 2023.
