Igboho: They Want Him Dead- Yoruba Monarch

Oluwo of Iwo

By James Orji

The Oluwo of Iwo, Osun state Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has urged Sunday Igboho, to dialogue with the federal government in his own interest, adding that those urging him to press on with his agitation for a Yoruba Nation want him dead.

Meanwhile, the magazine learnt that the activist has been making frantic efforts to leave the country after the DSS declared him a fugitive. Multiple sources close to him told The Source, on Sunday in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital that his travel documents seized by the secret police after they attack his home, have prevented him from doing so.

“But he’s trying to get out of the country through a friendly neighbouring West Africa country, in few days before he’s apprehended by security forces”  one source said.

The ‘Yoruba Nation’s activist has gone underground since July 1 following the invasion of his Soka, Ibadan, Oyo state residence by operatives of Department of State Services, DSS who have also declared him wanted.

Igboho Wanted By DSS

But appealing on Igboho’s behalf on Thursday, July 8, the monarch begged President Muhammadu Buhari to forgive him, that the activist is now ready for dialogue. Oba Abdulrasheed said he will lead the activist to Aso Rock, to meet with the president for dialogue at an undisclosed time.

According to him, Igboho had reached out to him to plead on his behalf, a claim that the activist has denied.

Olayomi Koiki, the spokesman for Igboho said the activist did not contact the monarch, adding that reports that Igboho has abandoned the Yoruba nation agitation is false.

Koiki told the Nation that Igboho did not speak with the traditional rulers “Not at any time, not even a single call,” to him.

“The news that Chief Sunday Adeyemo visited the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Akanbi is not true,” he said.

“The 2018 picture was taken during a return visit after he (Oluwo) came to chief’s house.”

Reacting, Oba Akanbi said it’s in the best interest of the activist to enter into dialogue with the federal government, adding that anything contrary could spell doom for him. He said it’s time to give up as he could not fight the authority.

Oba Akanbi urged Igboho not to listen to some elements in the country who.want to lead him to his doom. The choice to give up the fight, the monarch said, is for Igboho to make, adding that he has so much to gain by abandoning his agitation.

The monarch said: “It is only Igboho that can speak for himself now. Nobody can speak for him. If he wants to continue fighting the way he has been fighting, let him go ahead.

“If he wants his normal life back, let him go for peace. It is either he goes for peace or continues with ‘catch me if you can,’ with the DSS. The option is there for Igboho, but I won’t advise him to talk or say a word until peace is made.

“To return his life back to normal is my desire. Anybody that wants to lead the agitation can go ahead. It is Igboho that has something to protect. He has a life. He is our son, we won’t allow something bad to happen to him. He has a name. Sunday Igboho does not deal with some of those people who say they are speaking for him. Why didn’t you ask them when they spoke with Igboho?

“It is unfortunate that the majority of them are pushing him. They will just continue to push him until they kill him. To the extent that the DSS could claim responsibility that they attacked his house. They (DSS), said: ‘We went to Igboho’s house and we killed two people.’

“I think they just want to push him into trouble. Even before the current agitations, he was not poor. He was only misinformed and he has realised this.”

Meanwhile, the magazine learnt that the activist has been making frantic efforts to leave the country after the DSS declared him a fugitive.

Messi Breaks International Trophy Jinx, Wins Copa America Title; Argentina Major Trophy Since 1993

By Akinwale Kasali

Argentina’s 28-year wait for an international trophy is finally over, and Lionel Messi has finally won a major tournament with his country thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Brazil at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro to win the 2021 Copa América.

The Albiceleste played an excellent first half, and went ahead thanks to a spectacular long ball from Rodrigo De Paul to find Ángel Di María, who lobbed Ederson to give his country the lead.

Argentina  followed the exact same gameplan for the entire tournament: scored early and defended their lead with tough, physical defense and a whole lot of heart. And that was what the Albiceleste did when Brazil threw everything forward to start the second half.

Richarlison had a goal disallowed and then a huge chance that required a brilliant save from Emi Martínez in what was a 15-minute siege from the Seleção. After managing to weather the early storm, Argentina began retreating deeper and deeper in their own half and started wasting time with some rough tackles that took Brazil out of their rhythm.

Then Messi had a giant chance one-on-one with Ederson after a fantastic through ball by Rodrigo De Paul but missed it, and Martínez needed to make a monster save to stop Gabigol from scoring the equalizer.

Injury time was all about Argentina running out the clock, and they did it successfully. The final whistle came, and so did the tears on Lionel Messi’s face. He has finally done it for his nation, and he caps one of the greatest individual tournament performances in history with a trophy he has long deserved.

Di Maria was handed the Man-of-the-match trophy while Martinez goes home with the ‘Best Goalkeeper’ award.

At the blast of the final whistle, Messi couldn’t hold back tears, as it rolled freely down his cheeks.

The Six time FIFA World Footballer of the Year, has finally won a major tournament with the national team with a 1-0 victory over 2021 Copa America.

IPOB: Amidst Controversy, Kanu’s Stand-in, Ekpa, Talks Tough

0

By Adesina Soyooye

He did not wait to be announced by anybody. Or for a Press Statement to be released, officially, by the Spokesman of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Emma Powerful.  But Simon Ekpa, a Lawyer, from Ebonyi State, who, reportedly, lives in Finland, announced himself via his Facebook page, as the stand-in for detained IPOB Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as the boss of Radio Biafra.

Radio Biafra is the engine room, the main tool, with which, and through which, Kanu reaches the world, heats up, and inspires his millions of Igbo followers who live in Nigeria and in the diaspora. It is a powerful, potent weapon in the struggle, by IPOB, for the freedom it is fighting to achieve for the Igbo nation of Nigeria.

In announcing himself to the position, he let it be known that he was mandated by Kanu to run Radio Biafra.

And he sounded tough.

Describing himself as a disciple of the IPOB leader, he said he was committed to the ideals of the group, and would pursue them with everything in him.

Like Kanu, he called Nigeria a Zoo, and promised a more aggressive agitation than before. “Now, the Zoo will understand the meaning of aggressive agitation”, he said.

Here is how he introduced himself and announced his appointment to run Radio Biafra:

“Our Leader, Mazi Nnamdi on this day, 8th of July 2021 directed that I, Simon Ekpa should start broadcasting from Radio Biafra with immediate effect.

“On this note, it is honour, and at the same time, a call to service, a call to serve Biafra nation and a call to serve lovers of freedom.

“This task, i will do with everything in me to see that we maintain the momentum and the legacy of our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB.

“I will serve with everything in me and i will double my effort in media, diplomacy and otherwise to the best interest of Biafra people.

“I am just a servant and i will serve.

Our leader will continue to lead this struggle from where ever he is.

“I am Simon Ekpa, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s disciple on Biafra restoration.

“NOW THE ZOO WILL UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF AGGRESSIVE AGITATION..!”

But some reports say some IPOB members have denied that Ekpa has been appointed by Kanu to run Radio Biafra. They allege that he usurped the opportunity of a call-in program on Radio Biafra to announce himself as Kanu’s stand-in. They ask why IPOB did not announce his appointment through the usual channel.

Yet, others point out he wouldn’t dare make announce himself if he was not mandated by Kanu. They say he risks being dealt with if he dared.

Even though Ekpa has not responded, he sounds hip, as well as excited and committed to the IPOB cause.

His profile which has made the rounds on WhatsApp reads rich.

Following is the profile:

Like Kanu, he is, allegedly, said to be a Prince in his community. His father is said to a Traditional Ruler.

Kanu was, unexpectedly, in a “coup”, re-arrested by the Nigerian Government in Kenya, a couple of weeks ago. On trial in Nigeria for an, alleged,  treasonable felony, and granted bail, he was forced to jump bail in 2017 when Nigerian soldiers invaded his father’s palace where he was staying. They allegedly killed a  number of people, including a family dog.

Kanu, a dual citizen of both Britain and Nigeria was never seen in public until 2019 when he surfaced in Israel. From there, he went back to Britain, and had aggressively been fighting for an Independent Biafra from there.

While the Nigerian Government says Kanu was intercepted, IPOB says its leader was Kidnapped, and is holding the Kenyan Government responsible for it.  His counsel revealed he was detained in Kenya by the Kenyan authorities for eight days under torture, before he was handed over to Nigeria.

IPOB  has since asked its members to boycott Kenyan products and Kenyan Airlines.

Kanu will appear in court for the continuation of his trial at a Federal High Court, Abuja, before the Hon. Justice Binta Nyako.

He is presently under the custody of the Directorate of State Security, DSS, on the orders of Justice Nyako.

His Counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, in a letter to the British High Commissioner in Nigeria, asked for consular assistance to his client, a request which has, allegedly, been granted.

OPINION: Shame on northern Nigerians By Dan Agbese

0

By Dan Agbese

A typical day and a typical news bulletin in northern Nigeria: “Bandits kill 21, burn houses in Katsina communities invasion;” “Bandits hold 348 students, UNESCO sounds warning;” “83 FGC students held;” “Bandits: we are holding 121 Kaduna school pupils.”

In its issue of July 7, The Punch reported that “the total number of students being held by bandits has increased to 348 with the abduction of 121 students in Kaduna State. Out of the 348 students,” the newspaper further reported, “227 are still languishing in bandits’ dens many weeks after they were abducted from their schools in Niger, Kebbi and Kaduna states.”

Spare a thought for what their parents are going through, wondering if indeed their children are alive. No one knows in what condition the children are being held. But there is some indication they are sleeping on the ground in the bush subjected to the harsh elements in the open. It is no way to bring up our future leaders.

We do not know how and if they are fed but they are likely from the dens emaciated. It should worry our leaders who tend to lean towards power without responsibility. The responsibility of power does not begin and end with building roads. It is more importantly about the welfare and the protection of the majority of the people. As Churchill once said, power without responsibility is the province of the harlot.

The bandits holding the Kaduna students had the temerity to ask for rice to feed their captives. Still, Northern political leaders, the great men of the moment, cannot be counted on the side of the children and their parents. None of us can pretend not to be affected by what is happening to the region and its people. And let us not pretend about this.

Northern Nigeria has surrendered to the reign of bandits in the full view and with the full knowledge of those who have the constitutional responsibility to make the region and indeed, the entire country safe. It is a huge shame on northern Nigerian leaders.

The region bleeds and has been bleeding from Boko Haram, bandits, Fulani herdsmen, kidnappers and sundry criminal elements. Still, the Nigerian state and its constituent units in northern Nigeria feel overwhelmed and weakened by their inability to find answers to the tragedy. Our political leaders, great winners of paid awards for good governance, must have some problems with the sacred responsibilities of governance.

Resplendent in choice baban riguna, they strut the political stage, uttering inane political sound bites but ignoring the plight of their own people. They object to power shifting to the south in 2023 and conveniently forget that their people are losers even as they hold the reins of power.

I can find no reason and I can find no rhyme in the impossible situation and the existential threat we face. I can find no reason or rhyme for their cynical attitude towards the safety of the lives and the property of the people.

There are many things we do not understand in and about our country but the current situation must rank as the worst case of a riddle wrapped in a puzzle. It befuddles the mind; it passeth all understanding. Those who believe they have the right to be listened to are never tired of preaching the gospel of patriotism to the people. They forget that patriotism is reciprocal. A country that neglects its people has no moral right to expect the people to be patriotic.

When ISWAP captured one American not too long ago, the country deployed its forces and rescued him from his captors in Niger Republic. It is a typical example of a Government that fully understands that the life of one citizen lost to a state or non-state actors takes something away from its constitutional obligation to protect all Americans wherever they might be. The U.S. does not negotiate with terrorists but then it does not create room for such negotiation. It rescues its citizens and send their captors to hell.

Perhaps in the near future, sociologists would study these times and tell future generations of northerners why governments instituted by the people for the people abandoned the people to their fate in the hands of criminals. Here is part of the tragedy. We are told that the federal and state governments do not negotiate with terrorists, including bandits; yet the same governments allow the poor, helpless parents of the kidnapped children to negotiate with the bandits. It just does not add up.

Does that not undermine the so-called policy of non-negotiation?

It is hypocrisy at its lowest level. It should not be the business of the parents to negotiate with the terrorists. If the governments are not willing to negotiate with them and secure the release of the children in safety, then they must have an alternative strategy that would achieve the same purpose and effect the release of the children.

President Buhari has said it a good number of times that the Federal Government has massive power it could deploy to defeat the bandits and other terrorists but despite his repeated warning to them not to take his non-action against them as a sign of weakness, he has refused to deploy this massive power.

I thought the state funded the purchase of the arms and ammunitions and the training of the security personnel for times like these. I wonder if the bandits are not laughing, knowing all too well that while the governments would not negotiate with them, the harried parents will and they will achieve the same purpose by collecting huge ransom from the parents.

It is impossible for anyone who sees these parents scraping for a kobo here and a kobo there to raise money to meet the demands of the bandits not to be affected by the tragedy that befell them and their children.

They sent their children to school to give them a better future. They cannot understand why that path to their better future is either blocked or threatened by criminals. They cannot understand why their children have been turned into a means of making quick and illegal money while the governments dither, biting their nails in a typical display of weakness. They certainly cannot understand why the governments they instituted to make their lives and those of their children better are making things worse, much worse for them and their children. Nor can they understand why federal and state governments would choose to subject them to this trauma that deepens their helplessness and hopelessness and turn the rainbow of hope in the horizon into the dark clouds of an arrested future. Shame.

There is no way one can put it less indelicately: it is a shame on our governments and our political leaders who sought the mandate of the people, not to lead them into the gutter or abandon them there but to make their lives meaningful to them. But here we are: while the good times roll for our political leaders, the rough times roll for the people; while the leaders are protected by a phalanx of security men and women, the people are at the mercy of criminals who profit from the cynical attitude of our leaders towards us. The people are unsafe anywhere and everywhere – at home, in offices and on the roads.

It could not be worse for the giant of Africa.

Perhaps, the Federal and the State Governments in Northern Nigeria should pause now and give some serious thoughts to their gallant development efforts and re-examine their objectives.

What is the use of modern highways the people cannot make use of because they are dangerous and unsafe? What is the use of building primary and secondary schools and planting universities if the federal and state governments cannot guarantee the safety of the pupils and the students?

Development is about making lives better for the people.

As I said earlier, governance and its enormous responsibilities are about what is best for the people. It is not about mouthing slogans and ignoring the full protection of the rights of the people to live in safety and carry on with their legitimate businesses in their country. It was good to storm Sunday Igboho’s residence; it was good to arrest Nnamdi Kanu. Why does the same determination appear to be absent in saving our children from bandits? Since the actions against them for putting their fingers in the eyes of the Nigerian state, the roads in northern Nigeria have not become safer nor have schools in northern Nigeria become safer.

Civilisation may follow the roads, as the Romans contended, but human development follows security of lives and property.

It was no accident that the framers of our constitution made this as the number one responsibility the state must discharge towards its citizens. The failure to do so delegitimises the government. Let the northerners rise now and save their region, its future and the future of their young people. And end the shame of weakness.

Scandal: Assistant Comptroller of Correctional Service Impregnates Inmate’s Wife

0
Nigeria Correctional Service

By Gideon Njoku

The unbelievable has just happened at the Suleja Medium Correctional Centre. It is a scandal which stinks to high heavens.

The Assistant Comptroller in charge of the Correctional Centre, Abdulrahman Musa, has done the inexplicable. Musa has married the wife of an inmate under his custody. The young Fulani woman is already pregnant for him, after he married her about a month ago.

Sources from the Correctional Centre told this Magazine that the ACC married the inmate’s wife by deceit. He deceived the inmate, his wife and her parents to carry out the shameful act.

Musa’s path and that of the inmate’s Wife crossed at the Correctional Centre.

The inmate, Ismael Muhammad, a Fulanin, is in cell 5 of the new building of the Correctional Centre. He is awaiting trial, having been arrested as, allegedly, a member of a 15-man armed robbery gang.

Since his arrest, it became his wife’s lot to visit him in custody with their baby. During one of her visits, he caught the attention of Musa.

Being of Fulani stock, she is as beautiful, as most Fulani women.  The ACC could not take his roving eyes off the young woman. He loved what he saw. And, devised a means to make her his.

For him, it was simple. He decided, on every such visit, to invite her to his office, and conduct the visit himself. That, of course, is not his job.  But he descended that low to do it just to be with the young woman.

Then, he made his move. First, he began to lavish her with gifts and money. Soon, he told her that the offence her husband committed was so grievous he would never come out of prison. That being so, he, the ACC, wouldn’t want her to suffer. He convinced her to marry him.

Flaunting money, and telling her parents same story, he convinced them of a better better future if their daughter married him.

They were happy, and apparently, so was their daughter.

But there was another obstacle. The inmate. He needed to have him divorce  his wife before carrying out his heinous crime. Again, it was easy for him.

He began to give inmate Muhammad money  in trickles. Then, he began a business for him with the sum of N11,000. The business was that of mee shaie (Selling of bread and tea) within the Prison premises.

Then, the ultimate.

The ACC told the inmate that he would help so he wouldn’t spend than three months in prison.

To perfect his plan, one day, he gave the inmate, Muhammad, a written letter to sign, telling him it was part of the document to be used to release him from custody soon. Being a stark illiterate, who could neither read, nor write English, or his native language, he signed. Little did he know he signed a letter to the effect that he has divorced his wife.

With the divorce letter in hand, he went ahead and married the inmate’s wife.

Muhammad got to know of the terrible fate that has befallen him, and the ACC’s deceit from visitors.

Worried that his wife had stopped visiting, he asked questions. That was when he was told that his wife had become Mrs ACC Musa.

His reaction: He wept no end, and narrated his fate to his fellow inmates. They revolted. While they were revolting, staff of the Correctional Centre, who had heard the story, tried to calm them down to no avail.

When the ACC made to go to see them to find out what the problem was, they politely, without telling him what was afoot, advised him not to. But he insisted on going, saying: “I am in charge here.”

When he got there, the angry  inmates welcomed him by pouring ‘kunu’ and dirty water on him. He ran for his life before the arrival  of the Comptroller of FCT Command, CC Maryaki and other Security personnels .

It is not that ACC Musa had no wife before this scandalous marriage. In his house are two wives. The inmate’s wife is the third wife. And he has children.

His shameful behaviour has been reported to the  authorities. As a first step, before investigations and disciplinary actions are concluded, he has been removed from the Suleja Medium Correctional Centre. Unconfirmed report says he has been posted to Kano. Why he would be posted to Kano, his home State, instead of being placed on suspension, is what most people don’t understand.

Before this incident, sources had told this magazine that he was not an effective ACC.  They said he was indifferent to a number of things.

For instance, staff had informed him of a strong suspicion that a huge python lives by the soakaway near the Correctional Centre’s Clinic, and that medical staff, especially those on night duty, are in perpetual fear for their lives. He had been asked to bring in snake charmers to smoke the python out. He ignored it, saying the python “is a spirit.”

Meanwhile, while staff of the Suleja Correctional Centre are trying to cope with the shame brought upon them by ACC Musa, a new officer, ACC D Ali, has been posted to Suleja to take charge.

CAN Urges Presidency to Intervene In Release Of Kidnapped Baptist Church Clergy

0
CAN President

By Ayodele Oni

For fear of suffering similar fate like his colleague earlier kidnapped by hoodlums in northern part of the country, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari, to do something urgent to rescue Rev Popoola David Kayode.

Rev Kayode, of Calvary Baptist Church,  Kurmin Mashi in Kaduna State was reportedly abducted by some unknown gunmen last Tuesday.

The Pastor was abducted 24 hours after the abduction of 121 students of Bethel Baptist High School, Damishin, Chukun Local Government also in Kaduna State.

The district chairman of the Church of Brethren In Nigeria, and CAN chairman of Michika local government in Adamawa state, Rev Lawal Andimi who was abducted last year had his video shared as he was being butchered by Boko Haram mercenaries.

CAN, in a statement, signed by the national secretary, Mr Daramola Bade Joseph, urged the presidency to invoke its power by ordering military and other security agencies to move in and rescue Rev Kayode.

“To us in CAN, we believe that the freedom of the Pastor is a litmus test for the Service Chiefs, especially the new Chief of Army Staff,  Major General Yahaya Farouk and the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba as the world is watching whether they will live up to the expectations or not.

“If the then American President,  Donald Trump, could put his acts together from far away America and ordered his military to rescue only one kidnapped American in Nigeria, then, our President has no excuse not to act decisively and rescue this Servant of God.

“Why should the government leave Nigerians to be at the mercy of the insurgents, bandits and kidnappers?

“What is the essence of having a government in place? The government that did everything to ensure that the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, was brought back to the country is strong enough to stop these criminalities if the political will is there.

“Mr. President, where shall we go from here? Have the criminals taken over where there is legitimate government?

“Though we are praying earnestly continuously, we know faith without hard work from the side of government is vain. While we are aware that you may be doing your best, your best is not good enough to Nigerians and in the eyes of the whole world.

“The bitter truth is that no place is safe again in this country. It is high time your government rose up to this menace of insecurity challenges occasioned by some criminals who are operating with impunity as terrorists, killer-herdsmen, bandits and armed robbers.

“The impression that is being created in the mind of the people is that the government knows these criminals, refuses to bring them to book, but rather, treats them with kids gloves.

“For example, Sheik Ahmad Gumi has been having unholy romance with them publicly and making unguarded remarks about them yet the government is not bold enough to call him to order.

“All the grave allegations against Sheikh Isa Ali Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy over his alleged relationship with some notorious religious extremist organisations like Al Qaeda were swept under the carpet by the government that wants the people to believe that it is fighting terrorism.

“We recall how Apostle Johnson Suleiman, Obadiah Mailafia, Prophet Isa El-Buba and the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Dr Matthew Hassan Kukah’s statements were handled by security operatives and equally reacted to by the government.

“Do we truly have sacred cows in the country now? We are curious to know how Gumi was able to locate the whereabouts of the bandits when our security agencies are giving us the impression that they are invincible.

“If the terrorists can be located by an individual, what hinders the police and the military from arresting them and bringing them to book?

“Is anyone in government conniving with the terrorists so that this insecurity might continue? Is Nigeria truly operating two laws?

“Now, bandits are being pampered, money is being made available to them and highly respected politicians and religious leaders are speaking for them.

“Nigeria’s unity is on trial and if those running the country are playing the ostrich, there may be no hope of redemption. May God save our nation.

“History will not overlook the failure of the present administration to fulfil its campaign promises to fix the security challenges.

“The unborn generation will be shocked by the government that was brutal to the peaceful protesters and ‘freedom fighters’ like Sunday Adeyemo (popularly called Sunday Igboho) but was lenient with the hardened criminals who were operating with impunity.

“To reverse this, the President should have a change of heart in his style of governance before it will be too late. 2023 is not an eternity.

“He must stop a situation where Pastors are becoming endangered species under his watch.”

Benin Monarch Warns Edo Governor Obaseki Not To Trade Off Artifacts

0
Omo N’Oba N’Edo Ewuare

By Ayodele Oni

Benin monarch, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Ewuare, has lent his voice to the row that is brewing over the expected repartriation of some stolen Artefacts from the kingdom back.

The monarch, who is the custodian of Benin culture and tradition, has warned Governor Godwin Obaseki, to steer clear of under- current moves to divert the Artefacts to any other place other than the Palace of the ancient kingdom.

Oba Ewuare, who addressed the the Press and his subjects for the first time since the issue became public,  maintained that efforts to return the stolen Artefacts looted from Benin has been dragging for a long time, but thanked Obaseki for his commitment which helped bring it to fruition. But the Oba decried the Governor’s moves, contrary to their earlier agreement, to keep the artefacts under the care of a newly formed concern, instead of the Royal Palace Museum under the Oba Ewuare 11 Foundation.

A clearly angry Oba said: “It has become germane to note that the advocacy and demands for the return of the artifacts looted from the Benin Kingdom in 1897 have been going on for decades before the emergence of the incumbent Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

“I must sincerely thank the Governor for joining the struggle and showing commitment to retrieve our stolen cultural heritage from Europe.

“While anticipating the return of the looted artifacts from Europe, I want to note that attempts to divert the destination or the right of custody of the artifacts is not in the interest of the people of Benin Kingdom to whom the Palace of the Oba of Benin provides leadership.

“The looted artifacts awaiting repatriation from Europe are the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom created by our ancestors and forefathers within the traditional norms and rites of the kingdom.

“They are not property of the state government or any private corporate entity that is not a creation of the Benin kingdom.

“The right and only legitimate destination for the artifacts to be repatriated as already pronounced by my father is under the aegis of the Benin Royal Museum that will be sited within the precinct of the Palace of the Oba of Benin from where they were looted, and also, the proper traditional institution that is also the custodian of all the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom.

“The Palace, therefore, strongly advises that anyone, group, organization, or government – national and international that is dealing with any organization or artificial group in the process of returning the looted artifacts from the Benin Kingdom would be doing so at their own risk and against the will of the people of the Benin Kingdom.

“There is no alternative native authority and custodian of the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom outside the Oba of Benin as constituted by the Royal Palace.  I do not believe that the move by a privately registered company, the Legacy Restoration Trust Ltd. and the purported establishment of Edo Museum of West African Arts (EMOWAA) are in consonance with the wishes of the people of Benin Kingdom. It is pertinent to note that shortly after my ascension to the throne I had several discussions with the Governor on the plan for the Benin Royal Museum and he expressed his readiness to work with the Palace to actualize this laudable wish of my father. I made efforts and acquired additional plots of land from different families within the Adesogbe area near the present day palace for this purpose.

“I was however surprised to read from the Governor’s letter to the Palace where reference was being made to the fact that a new Museum to be known as EMOWAA is now being proposed, which will be funded and executed through the vehicle of another body now referred to as Legacy Restoration Trust.

“When Governor Godwin Obaseki informed me in his correspondence of another implementation framework using the so-called Legacy Restoration Trust and the Edo Museum of West Africa Arts (EMOWAA), my response was that the setting up of another organization or legal entity in whatever form or guise will not be necessary nor acceptable.

“I informed him that Oba Ewuare II Foundation has been registered with the CAC and has worked out a framework for not only receiving the artifacts but also building a modern structure – The Benin Royal Museum – within the precincts of the Palace and that land has been secured for the building of the Benin Royal Museum under the supervision of the traditional institution.

“But for reasons best known to him the Governor has gone against the understanding, given recent events. As a matter of fact, the people of Benin kingdom and other stakeholders especially Benin Dialogue Group, had at different meetings endorsed the Benin Royal Museum to be built within the Palace, as well as endorsing the Oba Ewuare II Foundation for fund raising and other requisite administration processes.

“We wish to use this medium to call on the Federal Government to take custody of these artifacts on behalf of the Palace until the Benin Royal Museum is ready for their collection.

“Under no circumstances should custody of our age old artifacts be handed to any privately contrived entity like the Legacy Restoration Trust.”

The monarch assured the people that he was in touch with the minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who is currently in Germany and has assured him that the federal government would respect the wish of the people on the issue.

“I spoke with the Hon. Minister for information and culture who is presently in Germany over the negotiation with the German Government over the plans for the repatriation of our artifacts he assured me that the Federal government remain committed to get unconditional return of our artifacts and will guarantee its full custody for their onward transmission to Benin kingdom.

“It now behoves the Federal Government to be the only level of government that can take custody of the artifacts with a view to transferring them to their original owner and their original place of abode, more so that there exist international treaties and laws guiding these processes.”

For over four years, the legal battle over the copyright infringement by telecommunication giants – Globacom, Airtel and 9mobile – on the intellectual property of Music artiste, Okiki Bright titled, “Gbagbe Boshe Sele”, has been on the front burner.

Fortune has  however, smiled on the Musical star, following the judgment delivered by Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos on 9th July, 2021. His Lordship ruled against  the telecommunication giants. He granted the sum of ₦2 million  to Okiki Bright’s musical work, Gbagbe Boshe Sele.

In delivering the judgment,    in suit number :FHC/L/CS/1776/2017 in favour of Okiki, the Judge held that 9mobile, Airtel, Globacom and others infringed on the copyright of Okiki Bright for using his musical work titled Gbagbe Boshe Shele as caller tune for commercial exploit without his consent and authorisation.

The Court resolved that Okiki Bright and Oritsefemi are not co-owners of the song “Gba gbe boshe sele” saying featuring Oritsefemi in a song does not make Oritsafemi a co-owner of the said song.

The Plaintiff, in the suit filed by his counsel, Alayo Akanbi prayed the court to declare him as the exclusive owner and original composer of the musical work titled Gbage Boshe Sele, and that unauthorised use of his song as caller tune by the telecommunications for commercial exploit without his authority amounted to an infringement on his copyright to the musical work.

Okiki Bright equally asked for monetary damages cumulatively against the defendants for infringing on his intellectual property.

In his statement of claim, the plaintiff averred that he paid the star Artiste, Oritsefemi Majemite Ekele to feature in his song in order to get more acceptability and that he was still working on promoting his song when people drew his attention to the fact that his song was now on caller tunes of some telecommunications companies.

Justice Oweibo awarded general and exemplary damages in the sum of ₦2 million and cost of ₦500, 000 each against the telecommunication companies  in favour of the Plaintiff.

While speaking with counsel to Okiki Bright, Alayo Akanbi who commended the Judge for a well researched and sound judgment and said that the judgment will go a long way to discourage intellectual property theft and wished that the court had awarded greater punitive damages against the Defendants as deterrent.

On his part, Okiki Bright said the Judge has passed the judgment in his favour but he was surprised at the award of damages in the meager sum of ₦2 million and that the amount cannot cater for his expenses since 2017 when the case started. In his words, ‘I am going to consult my lawyer to determine my next line of action’.
