Stop Harassing Doctors Who Treat Patients With Gunshot Wounds, NMA Tells Police

0
Innocent Ujah- NMA President

By Uche Mbah

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has declared that law enforcement agents have no right to harass doctors who treat gunshot-wounded patients since doctors have a duty only to save the lives of patients.

Police and other law enforcement agents have, allegedly, been harassing doctors who treat patients with gunshot wounds without asking how they got the wounds.

Most hospitals, consequently, reject victims with gunshot wounds.

Innocent Ujah, President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), during a parley on Channels Television on Friday says there is no law mandating doctors to demand police reports before treating victims of gunshots.

“As doctors, we don’t need police reports in emergency cases to treat patients. What you need to do is to save the life of the patients,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the law enforcement agencies in this country have lost their bearing in terms of control, they have no business asking us to get police reports before we treat emergencies.

“The Nigeria Police should be educated on the role of the medical doctor. A medical doctor doesn’t need any permission before he attends to any emergency. We don’t even ask for fees.”

“You must first get the patient alive before you would think about fees.

“The reality on the ground is that when you do that you may be an accomplice; they may accuse you of hobnobbing or hiding, in cases of armed robbery and the rest.

“That creates fear and uncertainty and insecurity for the doctors and that’s why some doctors ask for police reports but by and large, there’s no law that says a doctor must seek a police report before he treats an emergency.

“I think it is the overzealousness of the police that when you treat such cases, they might say you’re complicit. So obviously the doctor is not safe and needs to be protected.

“Doctors have been harassed, some of them locked up; they have been killed in the process of saving lives because of the police.”

OPINION: What Mark Zuckerberg’s Trial Says About Us

0
Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, is having a torrid time. One by one, his worst fears are coming true.

According to Sheera Frenkel and Cecilia Kang, authors of An Ugly Truth, a scathing tell-all on Zuckerberg and his second-in-command, Sheryl Sandberg, the Facebook founder has been troubled for years by three deadly fears: the prospect of hackers breaching the site, his employees being harmed, and the breakup of his empire.

He’s had them coming for the past five years, at least. But in just one week, his deadly fears have not only come to him with chairs, they have arrived at Menlo Park with their own shades as well.

Just before the disruption of services on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp for six hours on October 4, an engineer and former product-manager-turned-whistleblower, Frances Haugen, dragged out Zuckerberg in a devastating interview and public testimony, accusing Facebook, the world’s largest social technology platform, of putting profits above safety.

If Facebook was a country, Haugen’s testimony might have been treated not just as a rebellion, but a coup attempt. And Zuckerberg is not just another tyrant in a banana republic. He is a potentate with a fan base of over three billion, revenue of $85.9 billion and a market value of $800 billion. Facebook is bigger than many countries, and Zuckerberg, more influential than presidents.

Zuckerberg has rejected the whistleblower’s charges, saying they are untrue. But the crux of the matter is whether Facebook is exercising a duty of care remotely matching the brand’s monumental influence and impact.

After the Cambridge Analytica scandal and concerns that right wing groups, especially, were using social media to stoke hate crimes and spread dangerous and misleading information about public health issues in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, the heat has been turned on Facebook to raise its game.

The jacket of An Ugly Truth is lined with statements of remorse by Zuckerberg and Sandberg since 2006, promising distressed subscribers a new day and pledging a new leaf.

But it would seem that the fulfillment of those promises is hardly matched by the brutishness with which the brand seeks to impede or destroy its competitors using the massive trove of data at its disposal.

I’m not on Facebook or Instagram. Yet, I recognise that I’m caught in the predatory web of one of the behemoth’s most egregious platforms – WhatsApp. My addiction is not Zuckerberg’s fault; it’s entirely mine.

Long before Haugen laid out her charges, I had been having a deep personal conversation with myself over the potential impact that WhatsApp, which I signed up to only about four years ago, was having on me.

I sensed that I was getting addicted to WhatsApp, but like most addicts going through a rite of passage, it took a long time to convince myself that it was happening. I was in denial.

I would pick up my phone in the morning, determined to reply just one or two messages or check the time. And then, I would find myself drifting from tray to tray, clearing message after message and leaping from one tray to the other as notifications stream in with the seducing charm of a red-light district.

Some say it’s an ecosystem, a network of family and friends connected by shared interests, experiences and banter. In a way it is.

It’s a far more connected world today than it was in the 1980s when my aunt migrated to the UK and the whole brood that saw her off to the airport in two buses wept at the lounge as she departed.Speaking with her again from Nigeriawhich, at the time, had less than 800,000 telephone lines in a population of over 100 million was always going to be a misery. Her departure was like a funeral.

In a lot of ways, things have changed forgood, empowering millions of young people and forcing greater transparency in government. But in some ways, too, it feels like an eco-prison. Once you’re online, everyone in your community knows you’re there. Even when you disable your “Read Receipts”, stalkers still find a way to figure you’re in the yard and pounce.

To keep my space and sanity, I find myself leaping from one message tray to another, dodging unwanted incoming calls, and at the same time, taking care not to miss important information in the swamp of things.

At first, it was an adventure. But as time went on, the cons overwhelmed the pros of my daily WhatsApp experience. I began to wonder if flitting from one message to another with hardly enough time to process and digest one before the next, was not dangerous, if not to my mental health, perhaps to my mindfulness.

It was also difficult to remember where I got a particular information from – which chatroom, which message tray, or in fact, which platform. The whole thing would slowly blur into a fuzz, lacking in depth, context or meaning, yet bandied about by “contacts” as gospel.

Algorithms feed on our vulnerable, curious sides as humans. Most adults can, however, begin to turn the tide once they realise that the bulk of what exists in the “chat-o-sphere” is for the benefit of the propagators and those mining the data.

As the social media eco-prison took hold in my world with memes displacing touch and tech-speak and abbreviations replacing context and right spellings, flightiness became a real danger. I had to improvise to catch my sanity. And that meant letting necessity drive my social engagements, instead of the other way round.

Friends with whom I shared my experience told me it was a real struggle for them, too. They were also fighting their own social media demons, but of greater concern was the mental health of children of school age who appear to be spending more and more time on Facebook and other forms of social media, with all the attendant risks and dangers.

Yet, it would be unfair to scapegoat Facebook or single out any other social media platform for all the social problems of contemporary society. Throughout history new forms of technology have elicited both excitement and fear among the populace.

Socrates never wrote, because he said the invention of writing would worsen forgetfulness and his student, Plato, agreed with him.

The invention of the telephone was greeted with criticism that it was soon bound to make humanity a transparent jelly heap. And when television came along, it was scorned as a useless wooden box incapable of holding the attention of any serious-minded person.

The dramatic change in technology, especially in the late 1980s and early 1990s has spooked fears of job loss and weakened control. There are also fears related to privacy, cyber security and mental wellbeing and children’s safety. Yet, inventors and innovators have always prevailed and created opportunities for a better world.

Facebook may be in the eye of the storm now but all social media platforms have the same predatory instinct for which Zuckerberg is being called out. Haugen’s expose, coupled with political pressure on Big Tech from a number of countries around the world may lead to some soul-searching in Silicon Valley. But I doubt very much that we’re on the eve of a meltdown.

Zuckerberg and other tech entrepreneurs who have changed our world never pretended they’re out to finish what Mother Teresa started. They are in it for profit. The only thing that keeps their genius going is to build, buy or bury.

Shouldn’t they care about safety and people? Of course, they should. If they don’t and the market does not punish them soon enough, governments ultimately will. But until such a time, we must increasingly take responsibility for our safety and not be seduced by the prospects of a Mark Zuckerberg or Jack Dorsey nanny.

The world has been here before. Between the late 19th and early 20th century three of the most famous monopolies in the world – Andrew Carnegie’s Steel Company, John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil, and the American Tobacco Company were broken up. When AT&T got too big for its own good, it joined the list of fallen monopolies in 1984.

Recent events may have shaken Mark Zuckerberg, unsettling his quest for immortality. But they don’t necessarily mean that his third most deadly fear – a breakup – is imminent. Yet, it’s a good time for Facebook and its users to stop and reflect.

Pandora Papers: I Broke No Law, Says Peter Obi

0

Former Anambra State Governor and Peoples Democratic Party’s Vice Presidential Candidate in 2019 election, Mr Peter Obi, has reacted to a Media report that he breached Nigerian laws by engaging in secret businesses set up in tax havens, declaring that he broke no law.

An online publication, Premium Times, quoting Pandora Papers, had listed Mr. Obi as one of those personalities who clandestinely set up and operated businesses overseas, including in notorious tax and secrecy havens in ways that breached Nigerian laws.

The Pandora Papers is a leak of about 12 million documents that revealed hidden wealth and tax avoidance by some of the world’s rich and powerful.

But reacting to this Thursday, Mr. Obi said it was exhilarating that nowhere in the article was he accused of any form of corruption, whether in the form of diversion of public funds, or in any other manner, during and after his stewardship as the Governor of Anambra State.

He added that the publication did not, also, allege that he had been engaged in unlawful business ventures at any time whatsoever.

Obi said his understanding was that the allegation bordered more on tax avoidance and non-declaration of some jointly owned assets.

He, then, wondered if a thorough scrutiny and appreciation of all the facts and circumstances surrounding the alleged transactions were made by the writers.

“On the allegation that I violated the Nigerian Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, as well as sections of the 5th Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), by not declaring any alleged assets in Companies registered outside the Nigerian Federation, I think that the authors displayed ignorance on matters of Trust and International Investment Practices,” he said.

The former Governor said he did not, in any respect whatsoever, violate any law before, during and after his stewardship as the Governor of Anambra.

He said that in all matters relating to his investments and declaration of his personal assets, wherever they may be found, he proceeded, pursuant to professional opinions and advice of investment experts both locally and internationally.

Obi said he also engaged and acted on solicited advice by reputable legal practitioners on whose opinion he relied.

He urged all well-meaning persons to see through what he called “the hopeless sleight, and ignore the publication.

The Mission To Blackmail, Hijack and Destroy PDP; Why Secondus is in Court – Media Office

0
Uche Secondus

The Media Office of the Court-suspended National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Uche Secondus, has alleged a Mission by an unnamed PDP Governor to blackmail, hijack and destroy the party.

Why?

The Media office, in a strongly-worded statement, put it down to what it called the inordinate ambition of one man – the unnamed Governor.

The statement, signed by the embattled Chairman’s Special Adviser on Media, Ike Abonyi, explained that it is in a bid to stop the destruction of the party, and his insistence on his fundamental human rights, that Secondus is in Court.

It said that after throwing forward frivolous allegations  to get the Courts to suspend Secondus, the blackmail against him has continued with the allegation that he, Secondus, was now “romancing the opposition”, apparently, the ruling party.

But the statement revealed the story is actually the other way round.

Said the statement: “Afraid that their devious agenda could backfire, the said Governor and his stooges have resorted to linking Prince Secondus with the opposition when facts are there who secretly relates with the opposition.”

The statement, also, added that the only crime Secondus committed is his insistence not to bend the rules to please the said Governor.

Following, the full text of the statement.

“Since the orchestrated plan to hijack the soul of our great party by one of the Governors, there has been unrestrained blackmail against the person of Prince Uche Secondus.

“First was the baseless lies that Prince Secondus, as National Chairman, was not meeting up with his obligations at his Ward level in Rivers State. It was based on such ridiculous lies that they approached the Court to get the purported Interim Order.

“After the Interim Order based on such frivolous story, the said Governor and his errand boys went ahead to get the court ruling against Prince Secondus.

“For being so treated and victimized without any justification whatsoever after almost four years of selfless service to the party, Prince Secondus is left with no option but to fight for his fundamental rights by approaching the Court to seek redress and correct the blackmail and concoctions.

“Notwithstanding the frivolous nature of the allegations, Prince Secondus, on his own, as a strong believer in the rule of law, decided to respect the Court by staying away while seeking the necessary right that should correct the judicial ambush against him and the party.

“While awaiting the outcome of the Court presently at the Court of Appeal, the blackmail has continued unabated with fabrications and all kinds of laughable lies to the fact that Prince Secondus is romancing with the opposition.

“Afraid that their devious agenda  could backfire, the said Governor and his stooges have resorted to linking Prince Secondus with the opposition when facts are there who secretly relates with the opposition.

“Prince Secondus’ records in the party remains untainted from State Chairman to National Organizing to Deputy National Chairman to National Chairman since December 2017.

“Against this backdrop, therefore, the Media Office office of Prince Secondus deems it absolutely necessary to put the record straight and shame those fabricating lies and innuendoes.

“What is Prince Secondus real offence?

“He blatantly refused to be swayed by individual ambition of a Governor that wants him to be a good boy by circumventing the rules of the party.

“The leaders are uncomfortable with Prince Secondus’ straight face and unbending stance on fairness and transparency in the conduct of party affairs, particularly, elections and congresses.

“These explanations have become absolutely necessary, particularly, for some gullible party faithfuls who have been fed with all kinds of lies.

“Prince Secondus’ insistence on his fundamental human rights is not driven by any inordinate ambition but basically to stop the unilateral hijack of the party by some members who are copiously driven by inordinate ambition.

“Having paid his dues in serving this party at various strategic levels and has been at the highest command position of the party for the last 46 months, from where he recorded enormous achievements, Prince Secondus will not sit and watch power mongers driven by crazy ambition to rise and hijack and destroy this party.

“Prince Secondus, therefore, urges loyal and committed party faithfuls to remain steadfast in prayer since the party’s journey to Aso Rock is on course.”

Qatar 2022: Minnows, Central African Republic, Defeats Super Eagles In Lagos

Super Eagles - Qatar 2022 Qualifiers

By Akinwale Kasali

The vociferous fans of the Super Eagles of Nigeria were silenced by the 92nd minute strike of Central African Republic midfielder, Karl Namnganda, to give the lowly rated team a victory at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria.

The Super Eagles were stunned by the goal late in the match – when most fans had settled for a draw with their opponent.

Coach Gernot Rohr’s devastation was obvious as the ball hit the net, and was so glaring when the Center Referee signaled the end of the tensed match.

As expected, the Super Eagles dominated the match to the delight of their fans, who knew that the only thing missing throughout the 90 minutes of the match, was a goal for the home team, until the last gasp strike by Namnganda which spoilt the mood of the fans.

The Super Eagles started the game with Francis Uzoho in goal in place of Maduka Okoye who had been in goal for the previous matches.

Leon Balogun, William Troost Ekong, Olaoluwa Aina and Jamiu Collins started in the defence line.

Joe Aribo, Chidera Ejuke, Frank Onyeka and Moses Simeon played in the midfield, while Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Osimhen played upfront.

Discovering that the goal wasn’t coming, Rohr replaced in-form Union Berlin Football Club of Germany Striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, with Iheanacho, Moses Simeon for Kalu Uche and Ahmed Musa for Joe Aribo, but all the three substituted couldn’t save the three-time African Cup of Nations Champions from defeat.

In the other Group C match, the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde recorded an away 1-2 win against Liberia to keep their hopes alive in qualifying for the world showpiece.

With the victory, Cape Verde are now second behind Nigeria who despite the loss still sits atop the log table.

Cape Verde and Central African Republic have four points apiece, while Liberia have just three points.

The next round of matches will see Nigeria playing a return leg against Central African Republic in Douala, Cameroon, with Cape Verde hosting Liberia in Mindelo in three days time.

2023: SWAGA, Tinubu’s Political Group Takes Off In Lagos

0

By James Orji

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state has flagged off the South West Agenda, SWAGA a political machinery set up to push for the presidential quest of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former governor of the state and ruling All Progressives Congress, APC stalwart.

Tinubu, who is receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment in London has yet to declare his presidential ambition, but various groups across the country have been calling on him to run for the nation’s highest office.

SWAGA, a group led by Senator Dayo Adeyeye is one of the groups pressing for Tinubu to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking at the group’s launch on Thursday Sanwo-Olu who was accompanied by all members of the State Executive Council, lawmakers in the State House of Assembly, and local government officials said SWAGA was formed based on the belief in Tinubu’s vision and political philosophy that prioritise development of human capital and economy.

The Governor described the APC National Leader as a “core political thinker” of the contemporary generation, noting that Tinubu’s constituency in progressive politics stood him out as a beacon and rallying figure capable of delivering directional leadership to the country in the next dispensation.

He said: “Asiwaju Tinubu’s story has been a legend in vision, passion and action. These three values stand him out among his contemporaries in national politics today. It is no wonder the man stretches his arm of fellowship beyond Lagos, the State he led for eight years as a Governor and in which he bequeathed the legacy we are building on. He is nationalist in thinking and progressive in action.

“The SWAGA we are launching in Lagos today is a demonstration of Tinubu’s enduring political principles and strong vision. Those behind the movement took the three values and push them with passion.

“What we are witnessing today is the action from the vision and passion; this is what SWAGA represents. By the grace of God, we will drive this agenda to logical end and we will all witness the inauguration of our political icon come 2023.”

Sanwo-Olu assured the proponents of the movement of his continued support, promising to mobilise more political support for the group. He said he would join hands with SWAGA coordinators to take the agenda beyond the Southwest region and make it a national movement.

Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said Tinubu personified the progress the Nigerians had been yearning for, drumming support for the APC National Leader.

“If we want true progress, employment, security and development, we all know who is capable of creating these opportunities for us. He is Asiwaju,” Dr. Hamzat said.

Senator Adeyeye said Lagos was the last State to be visited since the movement started last December, noting that all political and traditional rulers across the Southwest were in tune with the agenda being pushed by the group.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Otitoju, who spoke on “Credentials of the next president of Nigeria”, listed qualities to be possessed by anyone vying for president in 2023.

He said a thorough analysis of political issues in the country indicated unrivalled political sagacity and good understanding of economic issues in terms of wealth creation remained the most important attribute to be possessed by the next president.

Tinubu remains the most qualified person, Otitoju said, adding: “He is a political tactician who rules over the most diverse State in Nigeria and ensures every ethnic group has contributions to the affairs of Lagos.”

The highpoint was the unveiling of the pro-Tinubu movement’s logo by Governor Sanwo-Olu and Adeyeye.

Notable figures at the event included Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, Lagos APC caretaker chairman, Hon. Tunde Balogun, Governor’s Advisory Council (Member), Baba Bamu Seriki, former Minister for Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, former APC National Legal Adviser, Babatunde Ogala, SAN, and Iyaloja General, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.

SARS: Report Uncovers Plot To Revive Notorious Police Unit

Usman Alkali Baba- IGP

By James Orji

Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba Usman is said to be planning to revived the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a notorious unit of the Nigeria Police Force, which was disbanded last year after #EndSARS protests, according to Sahara Reporters.

The federal government was forced to disband the unit following accusations that it engaged in extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses.

The online medium said it obtained a statement in which the IGP detailed a new mode of operations and rule of engagement for SARS.

The online newspaper quoted the statement purportedly from the IGP thus, “No SARS personnel is allowed to interface in any civil matter. They are not allowed to interfere in cybercrime (yahoo yahoo).

“No SARS personnel is allowed to conduct a stop and search exercise unless there is a distress call from victims or members of the public.

“They are not allowed to be involved in commercial matters, debt recovery, (landlord vs tenant issues).

“They are not allowed to interfere in any social/relationship cases (marital matters, boyfriend/girlfriend relationship). They are strictly for armed robbery and kidnapping cases!”

The statement further urged the citizens to report cases of harassment by any of its officials to designated telephone numbers.

Last October, many Nigerians, mostly youths thronged major cities in the country to demand probe and disbandment of the notorious SARS. The federal government acceded to the demand and later formed the Special Weapons and Tactics Team. The magazine, however, learnt that clandestine  efforts are being made to bring back the unit to combat the spate of insecurity and violence rocking many parts of the country.

Frank Mba, a  Commissioner of Police and Force Public Relations Officer, FPRO, said in a statement there was no plan to reinstate SAR. He urged the Public to disregard the report, adding that it’s a deliberate plot to defame the Nigerian Police.

2023: Jega, Na’Abba, Utomi Press For Electronic Transmission of Results

0

By James Orji

Attahiru Jega, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC alongside other prominent individuals has formed a coalition to mobilise Nigerians for the 2023 general election.

The group, though not a political party seeks to engage the Federal Government on the need to adopt the electronic transmission of results in Nigeria as part of efforts to ensure free, fair elections.

The Nigerian Senate and INEC have disagreed on the mode of transmitting election results for the 2023 general elections. The upper legislative chamber has recently amended the Electoral Act which seeks to force INEC to consult the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC before it can transmit results electronically or manually.

At a summit held in Abuja on Thursday the coalition said it will sensitise Nigerians on the need to push for the electronic transmission of results.

Members of the group include Ghali Umar Na’Abba, a former Speakr of the House of Representatives Dr Oby Ezekwesili, Professor Remi Sonaiya, Dr Mike Ozekhome (SAN), Senator Shehu Sani, Chief Raymond Dokpesi and Ambassador.

Others are NkoyoToyo, Adewole Adebayo, Dr Okwadike Ezeife, Dr Sarah Jubril, Dr Monday Ubani, Chief Ralph Nwosu, Maryam Inna Ciroma, Ariyo Toye Dare, Dr Olu Usim Wilson, Hadjia Zainab Maina, Ezekiel Nya Etok, Chief Precious Elekima, Colonel Bello Fadile, Olúdáre Ogunlana, Dr Chike Okogwu, Dr Tanko Yunusa,  Dr Olusegun Mimiko, Prof Kingsley Moghalu, and Prof Chidi Odinkalu, amongst others.

A statement released by Prof. Pat Utomi after the summit said members of the collation will push for electoral reforms in the country, particularly the adoption of electronic transmission of results.

According to him “the Summit agreed to initiate an all-inclusive national political coalition to mobilise Nigerians, while engaging the Federal Government for the adoption of electronic transmission of election results in Nigeria and also to ensure that there is a collective mandate of all stakeholders towards the advocacy for other related electoral reforms in Nigeria so that the country does not end up with another Electoral Act that does more to undermine the integrity and credibility of the electoral process instead of improving it.”

He described manual transmission of results as archaic and problematic.

As a result of this, Utomi said “Stakeholders across party divides and sectional lines, including civil society groups agree that the country is ripe and due for electronic transmission of election results to overcome at least 50 percent of the basis for electoral malpractices in Nigeria as asserted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

“The summit agrees that Electronic Transmission of results is the way to go for Nigeria and all stakeholders across party and sectional lines must build a common front to do the needful in ensuring credible electoral reforms for Nigeria ahead of the 2023 elections.

Meanwhile, many Nigerians are still wondering on whether the group will transform into a political party ahead the election in two years’ time.

2023: Atiku Kicks Against Zoning.

0

By Uche Mbah

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has told the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that where the President comes from is immaterial, and asked that the party be guided by the spirit of fairness and equity while shopping for its Presidential candidate in 2023 instead of zoning it along ethnic lines.

Speaking at the 94th National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting Thursday, Atiku said there is only one President, and that is of Nigeria.

“Where the President comes from has never been the problem of Nigeria. It will not be the solution to the problems of Nigeria. There is no such thing as a President from Southern Nigeria or a President from Northern Nigeria. There is only one President,  a President of Nigeria, for Nigeria and by Nigerians”, he said.

Continuing, he said: “The Peoples Democratic Party has the right to determine its rules on how the party should be governed. The people of Nigeria also have the right to determine who governs them.

“Talking about inclusions, I would like to see a new National Working Committee of  our great party that has sizable numbers of our youths and women. The decision of NEC today will either see PDP move into the Villa in 2023, or not.

“Since inception, this party has faced serious challenges, and has risen above sentiments to solve those challenges and move forward,” he added.

“Let me come to historical events, which I said I was going to cite. Those of us who served in the Constitutional Conference, which drafted the current constitution of Nigeria should remember that after we finished drafting the Constitution, we all met as members of the Constitutional Conference  and resolved to correct the injustice that was done to a particular part of this country.

“And we said, in whichever party you found yourself, your Presidential candidate must come from the South-West, because (MKO) Abiola had won election but it was annulled. Not only was it annulled, he was killed.

“So, we all agreed as members, and we went out of the constitutional conference and we formed our parties. The Peoples Democratic Party, The All Peoples Party, APP and the Alliance for Democracy, AD.

“At the end of the day, two parties emerged. PDP picked General Obasanjo and AD picked Olu Falae. All these showed.

“In 2003, all the PDP Governors   met at the Villa and said they were not going to support President Obasanjo for a second term, that I should  run. I now referred them to the resolution of NEC, where NEC decided that power should remain in the South-West for eight years. How do you now want me to go against the resolution of NEC?”

“I turned it down and we moved on.

“So, this country has a sense of fairness. This country has a sense of justice. Therefore, this thing that is inbuilt in our party, we should be able to use it, to imbibe it to make sure today’s deliberations are in the best interest of our party, in the best interest of Nigeria, which will ultimately give us the victory that we asked for, to go back to the villa,” he added

The PDP had, recently, zoned its Chairmanship position to the North, fuelling the impression that its Presidential candidate will come from the South.

Atiku has a huge plan to run for the seat again in 2023.

Don’t Complicate Security Situation In South-east, SERG Warns FG

0
Chief Willy Ezugwu

The pan-Igbo sociopolitical pressure organisation, the South East Revival Group (SERG) has warned the Federal Government and the five Governors in the Eastern States  not to take steps that could worsen the security situation in the region, saying that “the cost of reckless utterances and unguarded actions may consume the zone.”

The SERG in a statement signed by its President and National Coordinator, Chief Willy Ezugwu said “if the Federal and State  governments continue to act or speak irrationally, the entire country will be worse for it.

“There is no where in the world that a people who have been nursing a feeling of injustice over the years is confronted with the coercive powers of the state without regrettable consequences.

“In case we have forgotten, the extrajudicial killing of Mohammed Yusuf, the founder of the Boko Haram Islamic sect, by the State  forces was what directly or indirectly led to the escalation of the terrorist activities destroying the economy of Northern Nigeria.

“Since the Federal  Government  failed to employ a carrot and stick approach early enough, we have seen insurgency in the North worsening as bandits and Boko Haram fighters compete for prominence in the whole country.

“Also, killer herders that President Muhammadu Buhari openly admitted that they are not Nigerians have slowly spread into the Southern parts of the country.

“We,  therefore, warn that a declaration of a state of emergency in any part of the South East will be counterproductive with dire consequences.

“The deprived and excluded people of the South East are already angry that the Federal Government carelessly failed to protect them from killer herdsmen when they needed security protection.

“The Federal Government’s  threat of declaration of a state of emergency in the region is already being seen as a rigging strategy ahead of the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State.

“If a state of emergency has not been declared in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna, Niger, and Katsina states where bandits have virtually taken over most of the local governments, and telephone services cut, what is the justification for a threat to declare a state of emergency in Eastern Nigeria?

“South East Governors who are opening the doors of confrontation should know that the inferno of the crisis which is looming in the South East may consume all.

“If Northern Governors and Clerics can visit bandits, negotiate with terrorists, and even grant amnesty to killers of our sons and daughters in the armed forces, what is the big deal in dialoguing with youths of the South East who have been crying for justice in the region?

“How would anyone think that complicating the already bad situation through unguarded statements and actions be deemed a reasonable option in the circumstance?”, the SERG queried.
