For The South-east, It’s a Long Holiday

0

By Adesina Soyooye

For the people of the South-east, the weekend which began on Saturday, October 16, 2021, is continuing. It is a long holiday which stretches to the next weekend – Friday.

Here is how it is.

*Monday, October, 18, is the weekly sit-at-home order by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB. And even though IPOB had since, officially, canceled it, the order has continued to be obeyed in most parts of the Zone out of fear because there is a group, allegedly, a rogue group, which insists on enforcing it every week.

IPOB had earlier ordered a sit-at-home order to be observed every Monday, to pressurise the FG into releasing its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who is in the custody of the Federal Government, but it was later canceled and restricted to only the days of Kanu’s appearance in Court.

Yet, every Monday, there are pockets of violence and destruction and sorrow in some areas in the Zone perpetrated by those allegedly enforcing the order.

*Tuesday, October 19 is a Federal Government Holiday  to mark the Muslim celebration of Ed-el-Malud.

*Wednesday, October, 20, is expected to be a protest day to mark the one year anniversary of the bloody and violent #EndSARS protest of 2020. And, even though the Nigerian Security  has warned against any such action on that day, most people will stay home.

*Thursday, October 21, is the real IPOB-ordered sit- at-home. That is the day Kanu is expected to appear at a Federal High Court, Abuja, to answer to charges of alleged terrorism, treasonable felony and other sundry issues.

The Group has warned that if the FG fails to arraign him on that day, the South-east would be on a lock down for one month.

Clarifying its stand on the long holiday IPOB, in a statement by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, said it never orderd any sit-at-home order on Monday and Tuesday. It said its sit-at-home order is against Thursday, October 21, the day of Kanu’s expected appearance in Court.

Following is the full text of the statement.

IGNORE FAKE NEWS ON SIT-AT-HOME ON MONDAY, TUESDAY – IPOB

“The attention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great and indefatigable leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been drawn to the fabricated  statement being circulated by mischief makers and paid agents of darkness that IPOB had directed Biafrans to sit-at-home Monday, October 18;  Tuesday, October 19; and Thursday, October 21 for our leader, and One year anniversary of#EndSARS protest.

“We want to make it categorically clear that the above purported statement did not emanate from IPOB, and we completely dissociate with such falsehood. IPOB did not issue any sit-at-home except on October 21 when our leader is expected to appear in court.

“We therefore, urge members of the public to ignore the purported statement and utter falsehood being peddled by paid agents of government to create confusion and demarket IPOB. Their intension is to portray IPOB as violent and insensitive movement but we know their antics, and shall beat them to it.

“For the sake of clarity, IPOB has not called for any sit-at-home except on Thursday, October 21 when our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will appear in court in Abuja. Biafrans will solidarise with him by staying indoors on that day because we are all in the struggle together. He did nothing to deserve any persecution by the federal government.

“We seriously warn all those behind this rumour to retrace their steps and stop tarnishing the good image of IPOB.

:As a responsible and responsive movement, we stopped Monday Sit-at-home in the interest of our people. When we discovered that hooligans and paid agents of death wanted to hijack the opportunity to unleash mayhem on our people and cleverly blame it on IPOB, we stopped it. So, anybody sitting at home on Mondays does so out of ones volition and not on the orders of IPOB.

“We also urge the general public to ignore the fake news that our leader Mazi Nnamdi KANU has been taken away by foreign government”

The statement was dated October 16, 2021.

It has been estimated that for every sit-at-home, the Zone loses over N50bn.

Zamfara Monarch, Hassan Ato, Finally Regains Freedom

By Akinwale Kasali

After 32 days in captivity, Hassan Ato, Emir, Sarkin Fulanin Bungudu in Zamfara State, has finally regained freedom.

There was a sigh of relief from the Governor Bello Matawalle led Zamfara State Government over the release of the Monarch, as pressure had mounted on the Governor over the spate of insecurity in the State.

Announcing the return of the Monarch Sunday, October 17th, 2021, the Bungudu Emirate Council said the Emir was kidnapped in mid-September with his police orderly on the Kaduna-Abuja highway while they were  travelling to Abuja.

It did not, however, reveal whether the Monarch was released by the bandits on payment of  ransom, or rescued by security personnel.

A nephew of the Emir, who is also an aide of the Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, confirmed the release of the Monarch.

“They’re presently in Kaduna with some family members,” he said.

In a Statement by the Emirate Council, with the title; ‘THE EMIR OF BUNGUDU HAS REGAINED FREEDOM’, it said: “The Emir of Bungudu (Sarkin Fulanin Bungudu) Alhaji Hassan Attahiru has regained freedom after 32 days in captivity.

“On behalf of the family and Bungudu Emirate, we wish to thank everyone for the prayers and support during this trying time.

“We appreciate all the efforts of Kaduna State Government throughout this challenging period.

“Our immense gratitude to the Zamfara State Government in playing a key role to see our father returned home safely.

“We salute the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) for the support in faciliting the release of the Emir.

“We wish to plead with the public to respect the privacy of the Emir in the coming weeks as he receives medical attention and post-trauma management.”

Kogi: Police Officers Arrested Over Viral Video

Police Assulting Man at Okene Kogi State

By Adesina Soyooye

For some Officers of the Nigeria Police Force caught in a disgraceful video that has gone viral, it is most likely to be the end of their career in the Force. They may also spend some time in jail.

Trouble began for them when a viral video of them assaulting and “robbing” commuters, including a student, along Okene road surfaced on Saturday, October 16, 2021.

Commercial vehicles parked  in protest, and a commentator told the shameful story.

It was at Okene where the Police Officers, apparently on patrol duties,  stopped them and began their illegal duties. When they spotted the student with a laptop, he was asked to open his phone. But nothing incriminating was found.

They then focused on his laptop and accused him of doing “yahoo-yahoo” business with it. He denied vehemently, and told them his laptop was for his school assignments.

They asked him for money. He said he did not have any money on him. They forced him to call his people in Benin to transfer the sum of N25.000 (Twenty Five Thousand Naira) to him. When the money was transferred to him, they bundled him into their operational vehicle. One of them changed his uniform to mufti, and they took him to a POS to withdraw the money.

When one of the  commuters protested, he was slapped very hard by one of the Policemen.

The video caused a huge embarrassment to the NPF. An investigation ensued, and according to a release by the Kogi State Police Command signed by its spokesperson, DSP William Ovye Aya, the Policemen have been arrested, and are in detention.

He gave their names as: ASP Isah Barnabas, Inspector Ifediegwu Godwin, Sgt Emmanuel  Ochima, and the one who slapped one of the travellers,  CPL Umameh Mathias.

While ASP Barnabas has been queried as his fate would be decided by the Force Headquarters and finally, the Police Service Commission, the fate of the others who are already facing Orderly Room Trial, will be decided at the State Command level.

Following is the full text of the kogi State Command on the  incident.

OFFICERS IN VIRAL VIDEO NOW IN CUSTODY AS KOGI COMMAND COMMENCES INVESTIGATIONS

“The Kogi State Police Command has commenced investigations into a trending video where Police personnel attached to Adogo Division, while on patrol duty along Adogo-Okene road, reportedly extorted the sum of Twenty-Five Thousand Naira (N25,000) from a traveller while another was physically assaulted by one of the men in uniform.

“The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command, CP Idrisu Dauda Dabban, psc (+), fdc, while condemning the incident, noted that the Police officers have been identified and detained at the State Criminal Investigations Department. The officers are: ASP Isah Barnabas, Inspector Ifediegwu Godwin, Sgt Emmanuel Ochima and CPL Umameh Mathias who physically assaulted one of the travellers. The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) has been issued an official query while the three (3) other junior officers are currently undergoing orderly room trial (Police internal disciplinary actions).

“The CP further noted that the Command is doing its best to establish contact with the victims. He enjoined the victims to reach out to the Command thorough 08107899269.

“He assured that any of the officers found wanting in the investigations would be dealt with accordingly.

2023: Primate Ayodele Says Pastor Bakare’s Presidential Ambition To Enslave Nigerians’

Tunde Bakare

By Akinwale Kasali

Could one possibly say this is Karma that is at work?

This is the lot of the General Overseer and Head Pastor of Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, who is planning to throw his hat in the ring for the 2023 Presidential Race.

On Friday 15th October, 2021, Pastor Bakare had visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, saying he would contest  the Presidential seat if God and Nigerians ask him to. He described himself as a Nation Builder.

But  the Leader Of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, took a swipe at him, stating that Pastor Bakare should face his missionary work and stop mismanaging the grace of God upon his life.

Ayodele noted that Bakare cannot win an election in his Church not to talk of winning an election in Nigeria.

In a statement by his media aide, Oluwatosin Osho, the Clergyman advised Bakare to spend his money on the less privileged in his Church rather than waste it on something that has no reward from God.

‘’Tunde Bakare is mismanaging the grace of God upon his life and ministry. The dream of becoming Nigeria’s president is not realistic for him; he can’t even win an election in his church not to talk of Nigeria.

‘’If he has money, he should use it to help the less privileged in his church instead of going about to waste his time for nothing.

‘’Tunde Bakare should relax, forget the dream of becoming Nigeria’s president and face his missionary work that God sent him to do. He should preach the gospel, win more souls for Christ.,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bakare has launched the “Nigeria-for-Nigeria” group.

Addressing the members, Bakare said the new group would be greater than the “Save Nigeria Group”, a pressure group which he convened in 2010.

Bakare was quoted as saying, “I am going to champion it and it will go like wildfire across this nation. Nigeria-for-Nigeria will be bigger than Save Nigeria Group.”

However, Ayodele cautioned Nigerians against joining the group, stating that Bakare created the group to further his political ambition.

He said: “Tunde Bakare’s Nigeria for Nigeria movement is not divine, it is another means to put Nigerians in bondage again. Nigerians should not join this movement or else, another disaster awaits us.”

He reminded the party delegates of the importance and seriousness attached to the State Congress, urging them to be mindful of the expectations of the teaming members and followers who are desirous of a harmonious and inclusive atmosphere that promotes a healthy political participation for all and sundry.

He emphasized that for their party to move forward it is expected that the delegates elect credible, tested, trusted and experienced administrators who would be statesmen and women, ready to promote the policies and programmes of the APC-led administration of the Governor anchored on the 3R mantra.

Through different motions and support to the motions, the Nlemigbo-led executive was dissolved and a new election called.

The Electoral Committee members from the APC  National headquarters in Abuja led by Barr. Godwin Anaughe had swung into action immediately to conduct the exercise, reeling out the rules for the election as stipulated in the APC Constitution.

Candidates who were screened for different positions, beginning with that of the State Party Chairman, were called out one after the other and by consensus and a voice vote, all the positions were filled amid thunderous applause from party faithful.

The Coup That Threw Up Senator Anyanwu As PDP’s Consensus National Secretary

0
Emeka Ihedioha and Sam Daddy

By Gideon Njoku

In what has been described as a coup against the known leader of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Imo State, the Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, popular as Sam Daddy, emerged the South-east consensus candidate for the office of the National Secretary.

The position was conceded to him in Enugu on Friday, October 15, at a meeting of the South-east PDP on Friday, October 15, 2021.

Earlier, the Party’s National Electoral body had zoned the office to the South-east, which, in turn, micro-zoned it to Imo State.

It was expected that Ihedioha, being the leader of the Party in the State, would bring his influence to bear on the choice of the consensus candidate, but it didn’t happen. Powerful forces from outside the State were, allegedly, stacked against him.

One of the formidable forces, it is alleged, was a Governor from the South-south Zone, who incidentally, was his very close associate.

It is not quite known what came between Ihedioha and the Governor, but Party sources said it had to do with the crisis over Prince Uche Secondus as the National Chairman of the Party. Apparently, both the former Governor of Imo State and the South-south Governor are in the opposite sides.

The South-south Governor who has since shifted his political interest in Imo State  away from Ihedioha, deposited it in Anyanwu. It is the new relationship that helped clinch the new plum office for Anyanwu.

In Imo State, the story is that Ihedioha and Anyanwu are not political friends, as such, even though they belong to same party.

Their “sour” relationship go a long way, especially, to the Governorship Primary in 2019, which saw the emergence of  Ihedioha as the Party’s flag bearer. He was eventually declared winner of the election, which was, however, aborted by the Supreme Court after he had stayed for seven months in office.

Senator Anyanwu contested against Ihedioha at the Primary, and vehemently disputed Ihedioha’s victory. And, even when Ihedioha had been sworn-in as the Governor, Anyanwu continued with the case against his emergence at the Primary upto the Supreme Court.

Anyanwu’s anger was, having “unfairly” lost at the Primary, he wanted a concession. At the time he contested, he was the Senator representing Imo East at the Senate. He wanted the Senatorial ticket conceded to him, but Ihedioha, allegedly preferred  the now incumbent Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi who he was, already, committed to from the beginning.

Since these incidents, even though both Ihedioha and Anyanwu had met and publicly declared a common front, many in the party insist it is cosmetic.

In the past couple of months, Anyanwu has been more vocal and visible in the political affairs of the State.

It is being strongly rumoured that he still has his eyes firmly placed on the Governorship seat of the State, and would contest. The new office of the National Secretary of the Party which he is going to occupy, when ratified at the upcoming National Congress, will be a solid stepping stone. And, if so, he is most likely to contest against Ihedioha, who for now, still has the solid support of the Imo PDP Executive behind him.

Instructively, since the emergence of Anyanwu as the consensus choice for the office of the National Secretary, neither Ihedioha nor the Imo PDP has, officially, said a word.

Anambra Guber: Deputy Governor Okeke Pledges total commitment to Andy Uba’s Victory

0
Nkem Okeke- Deputy Governor of Anambra State

Deputy Governor of Anambra state and latest entrant into the growing fold of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. Nkem Okeke, has described the emergence of Senator Andy Uba as the party’s gubernatorial candidate as the best thing that ever happened to the state in the last few years.

Deputy Governor Okeke, a couple of days ago, dumped the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, for the APC. He was received into the APC by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja.

Describing the APC flag bearer as one whose wealth of experience surpassed that of all the other candidates, Dr. Okeke stated that he had implicit confidence in Senator. Uba’s capacity to reintegrate Anambra into the mainstream of national political reckoning.

A Press Release by Hon Victor Afam Ogene, Director Media and Publicity, Senator Andy Uba  Governorship Campaign Organisation, SAUGCO, said Okeke spoke last night at a dinner hosted on his behalf at the Asokoro, Abuja residence of Senator Uba following his switch from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA to the APC.

“All over Anambra, and indeed the South east region, the dominant complaint is the feeling of alienation by our people in the affairs of our country. And when you are so challenged, do you further go into your cocoon, or do you seek accommodation and understanding from your other compatriots?

“For me, the Nigerian project is bigger and desirable than the craving of any individual, or component part of the country. We must all sit as equals, on the table of brotherhood, to negotiate the needs and aspirations of all our people, including the South east,” the Deputy Governor said.

Seemingly taking a swipe at those who seek to downplay the essence of his defection to the APC, Dr. Okeke pledged to offer “total support” towards the emergence of Senator Uba as Governor-Elect after the November 6, 2021 election.

Some of those who were at the dinner included Chuma Mbonu, board member, Consumer Protection Council of Nigeria, Hon. Vivian Okadigbo, former House of Assembly member, Oyi 1 constituency, Engineer Nkemakonam Ifeanyi, a businessman, Chief Johnbosco Anaedobe, as well as the duo of Dr. Sulaiman Bakari and Hon. Yusuf Ali.

Why PDP In Ekiti State Will Not Participate In December 4 LG Election

0

By Ayodele Oni

The results of the forthcoming Local Government Area Election in Ekiti state are ready, the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) in the state has alleged.

The State Independent  Electoral Commission, (SIEC), has fixed December 4 for the council poll, which will be held in 16 recognized Councils and 19 Local Council Development Areas, LCDA.

Already, the All Progressive Congress, APC, has screened Councillorship and Chairmanship candidates for the poll and are now being levied.

It was gathered that each Councillors hip candidate is expected to pay not less than N350,000, which include nomination fee, tax and SIEC levy.

The opposition PDP has announced that it would not take part in the election.

The PDP, alleged that “the result of the election has been predetermined,” accusing the electoral umpire, of failure to adequately inform other parties about the Local Government Election.

A statement in Ado Ekiti by the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Raphael Adeyanju, titled, ‘Ekiti PDP boycotts council polls, says APC allergic to violence-free election,’ the party’s State Working Committee led by the Chairman, Lanre Omolase, after a crucial meeting with the party stakeholders on Thursday, mandated all PDP members to boycott the council poll.

According to the statement, the SWC said, “The ruling All Progressive Congress is not capable of conducting any peaceful, free and fair democratic contest without violence.”

The PDP took a swipe at the Electoral body, saying, “How can the Ekiti SIEC convince us of impartiality when it is ready to conduct elections in the new LCDAs that were created for political reasons without considering their viability?

“Why did it take Governor Kayode Fayemi this long to create the LCDAs? We are not going to be part of this electoral fraud.”

But APC Public Relations Officer, Ade Ajayi, said the PDP was only running away from the election having been overwhelmed by Fayemi’s achievements.

Ajayi, who said the APC would have loved highly competitive local government elections, said, “If the PDP said they are not going to participate, that is their own cup of tea. We won’t force them. That is a signal that they have been rejected by Ekiti people.”

Ooni of Ife- Oba Enitan Ogunwusi

By Ayodele Oni

Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who is currently celebrating his birthday, has advised the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Government to engage in a round table discussion with all aggrieved sections of the country as a way out of the present agitations.

Towing the way of the Monarch is a religious leader, Bishop Emeka Nwankpa of Faith International Bible Church.

Both leaders spoke at the Palace of the Ife Monarch during an interractive session with newsmen.

The Ooni of Ife who harped on the need for Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic, religious and political colorations to  unite in peace, stated that the issue of insecurity bedeviling the country required a holistic approach so as to address the issue once and for all.

He urged those fanning the embers of disintegration to jettison their thoughts, stressing that Nigeria is better as one, while advising the Federal Government to address issues causing agitations for the sake of peace.

The Ooni also called on the Federal Government to engage all aggrieved groups in the country, pointing out that through dialogue, a lot would be achieved.

On his part, Bishop Nwankpa stressed that Nigeria is better as one indivisible entity.

According to him, engaging all aggrieved groups in the country remains the surest and possible way of addressing the insecurity challenges that is threatening the corporate existence of the nation.

He decried the killings in all the geo-political zones of the country, adding that those perpetrating these crimes are enemies of Nigeria bent on bringing the country to its knees, but expressed hope that President Buhari would find solution to the myriad of challenges facing the country.

Bishop Nwankpa, who is a Chieftain of the All Progressive Congress(APC) from Abia state, appealed to all groups causing unrest in the country to sheath their swords and embrace peace which has no alternative.

He advised President Buhari to open doors for dialogue with a view to galvanizing all aggrieved groups in the country.

The Cleric also used the opportunity to urge the people of Abia to keep hope alive as the state is on the verge of being liberated from bad governance.

Gov Fayemi Says Development Of Ekiti Remains Priority

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, said on Friday that his administration resolved to continue with various projects inherited from previous administrations to sustain rapid development of the state.

This is just as the Governor disclosed that he has commissioned over one thousand projects within the last three years.

He revealed this while giving  account of stewardship at the Ekiti State House of Assembly, as part of activities to mark his third anniversary in office.

The Governor explained that the projects which cut across all sectors of the economy and the 16 local government areas of the state, were part of his resolve to ensure that he leaves Ekiti better that it was and ensures that it becomes a commercial hub.

Dr. Fayemi added that very soon his administration would launched the installation of a 4.5 megawatts power station to complement the ongoing installation of CCTV cameras across the state towards guaranteeing a safe environment for investors.

He expressed concern over the poor state of Ado-Akure road saying the state would continue to engage the federal government to ensure that the contractor handling the project fast track the level of work on the route.

The Governor promised to continue to promote the welfare of workers and their condition of service to motivate them for optimal performance in line with world best practices.

He affirmed that government has recorded a lot of gains in the agricultural sector and much more efforts were still being put to boost agribusiness so as to create wealth opportunity, job and improve food production towards making Ekiti the food basket of the country.

Dr. Fayemi added that all health care both primary and tertiary across the state have witnessed facelift saying some of them would be commissioned in the course of the anniversary.

The governor disclosed that two out of the best JAMB students for 2021 were from Ekiti State, while some teachers and schools from the state emerged as runner ups in the national competition, attributing the feat to the investment and attention his government gave to the education sector.

In his remark, the speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr. Funminiyi Afuye said Governor Fayemi has changed the narrative in Ekiti state through the restoration of the pristine values of integrity, honesty, sincerity of purpose and respect for the elderly.

He noted that the achievements of the governor across all sectors in the last three years in office were too visible to be ignored inspite of the dwindling resources.

He added that government under Governor Fayemi has promoted accountability and respect for the rule of law, saying the house would sustain the relationship with government so as to promote growth and development of the state.
